Celebratingdiversity

This week we’re diving into Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion events that have introduced colour and vibrancy to The Trust. We have top stories that show how we're all coming together to make a difference.

The growth of our staff networks and events is thanks to YOUR feedback in staff surveys, meaning our networks are growing stronger than ever.

We’ve got the lowdown on the Barnsley Hospital Pride celebration, tackle men’s mental health head-on with a look at the powerful Andy’s Man Club WOW session and we hear from Hephzi on what Onam means to her. Also, be aware of our Black History Month event and a joint Onam and Diwali celebration later in October.

WhatOnammeanstomeHephziPrabakaran

Hi I’m Hephzi Prabakaran, from India and I work in the Endoscopy unit, a job I love. Outside of work, I’m passionate about art, painting, playing the piano and photography.

My experience of Onam is a cherished harvest festival in Kerala, India. The fesival symbolizes unity, prosperity and cultural heritage. For me, it’s a time to connect with my roots and celebrate our values with friends from Kerala.

Together we participate in cultural events sharing Onam sadhya (a traditional Indian Cuisine), creating Pookkalam flower arrangements and engage in traditional games such as Vallam Kali. This not only brings joy but fosters community spirit and cultural awareness.

Please join our Onam and Diwali celebratory event in Colliers Restaurant on Tuesday 29th October between 11.30am & 1.30pm

Embracing this heritage in a multicultural setting makes Onam meaningful as it deepens my connection to tradition while celebrating diversity.

HospitalstaffshinewithPride

It wasn’t just a party – it was a full-on Pride celebration, proving just how serious we are about diversity, inclusion, and respect. The board and executive team showed up in force, backing Pride at the hospital and giving further backing and presence to our staff networks. Alongside our LGBTQ+ crew and community influencers, they’re making sure our workplace is a place where everyone can thrive. Groundbreakingresearchprojectshortlisted for‘redcarpet’NursingTimesAward

Barnsley Hospital’s innovative COVID-19 vaccine study has been shortlisted for the prestigious Nursing Times Award in the Clinical Nursing category. What began as a local response to the pandemic has evolved into a unique and impactful research project, now recognised on a national stage. Despite workforce shortages and travel restrictions, the team successfully conducted a large-scale vaccine study.

This refined the approach to focused research and this achievement, rarely seen in smaller hospitals, has earned them a place among the top contenders for this award. Being shortlisted is a major accomplishment, showcasing Barnsley’s leadership in clinical nursing and its ability to drive groundbreaking research in healthcare settings, setting a new benchmark for nursing innovation.

MichelleNixon PUBLICLY BRILLIANT

A patient nominated Michelle for the support she provided

I honestly would never go to the lengths of writing a compliment such as this without feeling like I truly believed that you had such a wonderful person working for your hospital. Women coming to the breast clinic are undoubtedly already anxious and fearful of the investigations that are on going in respect of some issue with their breast.

Having her as the person that many women speak to first when needing an appointment at the breast clinic is something that shouldn't be undervaluedshe is a credit to your service.
