MAYFLY
“Firstfindaplayyoulove”.ThiswastheadvicefromexperienceddirectorswhenI begantoexploredirectinghereatPutneyTheatreCompany. Mayfly wasthe obviouschoice.I’dloveditwhenitpremieredattheOrangeTreeTheatrein2018. ItwasJoeWhite’sdebutplayandwonhimanOffWestEndAwardforMost PromisingNewPlaywright.IrememberfallinginlovewithLoops,Harry,Catand Ben.LongafterIleftthetheatre,Ifoundmyselfwonderingwhatbecameofthem afterthisonedayinMayduringwhichtheplayisset.Idon’twanttosaytoomuch aboutthestory,insteadI’llleaveitforthecharacterstotell.JoeWhitehasasucha waywithdialogue.Thespeechsoundssonatural-likeyouareeavesdroppingon real-lifeconversations.IfyouwereluckyenoughtocatchhisOlivierAward Nominated BlackoutSongs atHampsteadTheatre,you’llknowwhatImean.
However,Iwouldliketotouchononetheme.Although Mayfly hasaruralsetting, andIgrewupinatown,Irecognisethedyingcommunitythatformsthebackdrop ofthisplay.BenandCatarenostalgicforthetimewhenyoungfamiliesthrivedin thevillage,whenthelocalpubwas“packedtotherafters”onaFridaynight.Now theyoungpeoplearedrivenoutbylackofjobs,theirhomessoldforasongto affluentpensionersandtheaverageageofthecommunityhascreptupandup.Isee verystrongparallelstotheEastDurhamcollieriesthatborderedthetownIgrew upin,Peterlee,anewtownthatpromisedjobsastheminingindustryfaltered, fadedandeventuallydied.Asateenagerinthe1980s,Ididn’trecognisethe HordenandEasingtonCollieriesofmyparents’reminiscences.LikeCatandBen, theydescribedatimelong-gone.Itwasunimaginabletomethattheseghosttowns oncesupportedtwo,eventhreecinemas.Each!Andschools,pubs,working-mens’ clubs,coffeebars,dancehalls.Living,dying,gettingmarried,havingbabies–lives beinglived–people seeing people.Community.
And,speakingofcommunities,IwantedtosayawordaboutCommunityTheatre. Theterm“amateur”hasbecomesomethingofadirtyword,tobeused disparagingly.But“amateur”comesfromthelatin amare meaning“tolove”,orso
Googlereliablyinformsme.Everyactorintonight’splay,thecrew,theset designersandbuilders,soundtechnicians,lighting,frontofhouse–allofthem dothisvoluntarily,ontopofholdingdownadayjob.Theyofferuptheselong hoursbecausetheylovetheatreandtheylovethecommunityitbrings.People canbejustashauntedbylonelinessincitiesastheycaninthecountry.And communitytheatresgivepeopleaplace,apurposeandtheopportunitytohone yourcraft,anddothingsyouhadnoideayoucoulddo.
Tomyfellowamateurs,andafewmoonlightingprofessionals,thankyouforthe manyhoursofhardworkthatyouhavepouredinto Mayfly andwithsuchgood grace.Thankyouforsharingyourtalent,yourexpertiseandyourcreativity.And thankyoutoPTCforhavingfaithinmeandinthisincrediblytalented,dedicated cast.
