WHOLE SCHOOL GALA CONCERT

Wednesday 13th March 2024

The Glasshouse

International Centre for Music

WELCOME FROM THE HEADMASTER

Good evening and welcome to our second Whole School Concert at the magnificent Glasshouse International Centre for Music, following our immensely successful and memorable inaugural event in the same venue two years ago.

We are absolutely thrilled to be back and now know, with the benefit of hindsight, how special an evening and event it is. Under the leadership and stewardship of our Director of Music, Mr Dawson and his team, as well as the creative juices of our Director of Drama, Mr Edwards, we pride ourselves on driving high standards in the creative arts at Barney, whilst ensuring that there is a sense of inclusion and everyone also feels they can have a go. This is demonstrated regularly over the course of the academic year, with high quality concerts and productions counter balanced by light hearted but inclusive events such as House Singing and House Drama competitions, in both Prep and Senior Schools, as well as weekly Congregational singing

practices, which we still believe plays a very important part of our education.

This concert is a microcosm of that mindset and approach; selected individual and group performances from those who have a genuine passion for music and acting, combined with opportunities for all students, regardless of perceived ability or approach, to be involved in something so spectacular. That includes the Headmaster, who is still receiving criticism for not performing two years ago…

I am so very humbled and proud of the way the whole school and Barney community comes together on occasions such as this, and I know you are all in for a wonderful treat.

Sit back and enjoy!

Yours,

WELCOME

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Welcome to the Glasshouse International Centre for Music as we proudly present the second-ever Barney Whole School Gala Concert. We are over-the-moon to be back and to showcase the musical talents of every student from both our Prep and Senior Schools.

Our previous gala concert, held in 2022, was, by some way, the highlight of my teaching career. It was an event which I loved for so many reasons, but principally because it felt so very ‘Barney’. That we had every single pupil on stage throughout the course of the evening was magical, and the buzz took some time to come down from. I was convinced it would be a one-off. Cue a brief conversation in the staff room the day after the event, where Mr Jackson casually slipped into conversation “so, another in two years’ time?”

I can’t quite believe we are back, and it is hard to put into words how excited we are to offer this evening’s concert. We have tried to incorporate many of the elements that made our previous event so special: a range of performances, from small ensembles, to multi-year group offerings and culminating with a whole-school song. The pupils have worked so hard in preparation for this evening, and I am indebted to each and every one of them for buying in to what we do here and getting involved with music in the way that they do.

I would like to point out one particular item in the programme: in the second half of the concert, you will hear the world-premiere performance of a piece of music composed by one of our very own pupils. Just a few days after we celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8th, I am thrilled that Kathryne S’s ‘Trio for Cornet, Trombone and Piano’, written for this very venue and concert, will receive its first performance on this world-renowned stage. We are incredibly proud of her. Kathryne will tell you a little more about the story behind the composition and its performance tonight herself, but, without giving too much away, it is quite a remarkable coincidence!

Nights like this don’t happen without an extraordinary amount of work behind the scenes, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our hard-working staff here at Barney for giving their time and energy to make this evening what it is. I am incredibly grateful to work with such wonderful colleagues. Finally, I would like to offer my genuine thanks to you all for supporting our pupils in this evening’s concert. I am only too aware that the support of parents, guardians, family and friends extends well beyond this one night, and we could not do what we do without the amazing support our youngsters receive from home.

Thank you very much again. I hope you enjoy the show.

Barney achieves highest ‘Excellent’ rating Barnard Castle School is delighted to announce that it has achieved the highest ‘Excellent’ rating awarded by our sector’s regulator, the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), following a rigorous and comprehensive inspection.

In April 2023, we welcomed inspectors from across the UK for a focused compliance inspection combined with an inspection of educational quality over a three-day period, which included lesson observations and staff and pupil interviews.

Following the rigorous inspection process, the ISI concluded that Barnard Castle School is fully compliant and meets all the standards in the schedule to the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014, the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools 2022 and associated requirements. The team of inspectors also gave high praise about the quality of our students’ academic achievements and personal development, awarding ‘Excellent’ in both categories.

Barney’s overarching purpose, vision and aims shone through the ISI’s report, with the Inspectorate attributing students’ excellent personal development as ‘a direct result of the values and ethos of the school. This is driven by the senior leadership team through the innovative use of assembly and tutorial time, which is endorsed by the governing body, thus fulfilling the school’s aim to develop young adults with character’. Inspectors noted many key findings throughout the report, including:

• The comprehensive and experienced pastoral care team are a huge strength of the school and embody the values and ethos they wish to promote.

• Pupils reach for higher levels of knowledge and

attainment whilst also having the freedom to make their own educational choices.

• Pupils’ sense of awe and wonder in this circle of life was contagious.

• Pupils have an excellent understanding of service to their community which is reflected in many aspects of their school lives.

• Pupils demonstrate excellent collaborative and co-operative skills that reflect the school’s core values.

• Pupils’ contribution to others and the wider community is exceptional.

• Pupils’ achievements outside the formal curriculum are excellent. They enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities, in which participation levels are high and enrich their education and personal development.

Headmaster Tony Jackson said: “This was a rigorous and comprehensive inspection and we are unbelievably proud of the outcome, which is validation of everything we endeavour to do. Our children are preparing for a rapidly changing world and are having to contend with adversity on a local and global level.

“The seamless implementation of our bespoke ‘Barney Education’ curriculum and ground-breaking ‘Apollo’ system ensure we remain at the forefront of technological advances in education, which has already had a positive impact throughout our entire School community.

“It is a pleasure to work alongside so many talented professionals and be part of such a special, unique community, and we are excited about what the future holds for our School.”

WHOLE SCHOOL GALA CONCERT

MARCH 2022

Barney’s inaugural Whole School Gala Concert two years ago was an evening to remember and one that will stay long in the memories of all performers and spectators alike.

In what was the School’s first major concert since the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a joy to behold for the entire Barney community as Barnard Castle School literally took over one of the region’s - if not the country’s - most well-known and highly acclaimed entertainment venues.

We are delighted to be back at The Glasshouse (formerly known as ‘The Sage’) this evening for what promises to be another memorable occasion, and one that, we hope, will be talked about for many years to come.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

We are grateful to all advertisers and sponsors for supporting this programme and event, which we hope all in attendance enjoy.

Thank you to everyone involved in the organisation and delivery of this evening’s spectacle, without whom Barney’s Whole School Gala Concert would not have been possible.
