Plantation& Harvest Coffee

The process of coffee brewing has undergone immense changes over the years since the coffee shrub was discovered in the 3rd century, and has advanced to the various methods practiced today. Although coffee cultivation has its origins in Vietnam and Brazil, nowadays coffee is found in plantations across South & Central America, Africa and Asia, in a total of 80 countries.

It can take up to four years for a coffee tree to reach mature production. Once this stage is reached, coffee trees, if managed well, can be maintained for 40 years. Coffee beans require specific climatic conditions such as the right amount of shaded sunlight, regular watering with around 70 inches of rainfall, fertilizing, pest and weed control, good drainage and a warm and humid environment.

There are about 25 major species of coffee beans, however the commercially available ones are mainly two called Coffea Arabica and Coffea Canephora, the latter usually referred to as Robusta. Whilst the Arabica bean is aromatic, acidic, juicy with fruity notes, the Robusta bean tends to be more bitter, coarser, full bodied with little or no acidity. The Arabica bean is enjoyed by all the many NESCAFÉ Gold Blend lovers, whilst the Robusta bean can be savoured in a cup of NESCAFÉ Classic.

A Rich Source of Antioxidants

Did you know that the cup of coffee you love so much contains numerous healthy elements that your body requires? Amongst these components, both decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee contain a high level of antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances which are also found in fruits and vegetables, and may protect your cells against the effect of free radicals, which can be produced in excess following exposure to UV Light, cigarette smoke and pollution. These free radicals can damage cells, and may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

Guilt-free hydration Water is the main ingredient in a cup of coffee. A typical 150 ml cup of coffee corresponds to 10% of your average daily water requirement from beverages. And soluble coffee is practically free of calories, with only 2 kcal per cup, while brewed coffee, espresso, or coffee mixtures (coffee-chicory) have just 5 kcal/cup. While a lot of people believe coffee to have a diuretic effect because of its caffeine content, all recent scientific studies agree that moderate coffee consumption of 3 to 5 cups per day is actually no more diuretic than water.

Caffeine stimulates the senses Coffee is a natural source of caffeine, just like tea, cocoa and guarana. Caffeine is well known for its mild stimulating properties on the body and mind. The body absorbs it rapidly, usually within 30 minutes, and its effects may last for 2-5 hours. Of course, the amount of caffeine per cup depends on the coffee blend and the amount of coffee used per cup. Caffeine stimulates mental performance by increasing alertness and concentration. It also contributes to enhanced physical performance by stimulating the metabolism and delaying the feeling of fatigue.

It was around 33 years ago that Paul Cassar took up a bar tendering job and found himself immersed in the wonderful world of coffee cocktails. Starting off as a barman his career developed and he now occupies the role of Bars Manager in a local 5-star hotel. Creative at heart, Paul never settled down to serving the regular international cocktails but has sought inspiration and ideas to present a

YOUR GENEROSITY KEEPS GIVING GOODNESS

The success of the ongoing NESCAFÉ Giving Goodness Campaign has once again proven the generosity of the Maltese community. Since the launch of this scheme, more than €4,000 worth of Nestlé food and beverages have been donated to the Catholic Agency Ejjew Għandi Children’s Homes. Alongside this, NESCAFÉ consumers have also donated €300 in cash towards the needs of the Sacred Heart Home in St. Venera. Over the past year Ejjew Għandi has experienced a rising rate of referrals for entry into children’s residential homes. Children’s homes are very often asked to accommodate emergency placements, and children over 3 years of age are accepted blindly with no proper assessment of their individual needs. This, however can lead to the children being placed in the wrong setup due to the lack of pre-admission assessment. Therefore as a solution to this challenge, Ejjew Għandi is planning to set up a Crisis Intervention/ PreAdmission Unit.

This Unit will provide care and shelter until an assessment of the child referred is carried out over a maximum of 6 weeks. The assessment will be carried out by a team of doctors, psychologists, social workers, and it is through their careful intervention that the right placement can then be identified in the best interests of the child. In the meantime, the child is kept in the Unit, but is prepared for the new placement through orientation visits. The child’s case is assessed calmly with the hope of re-integrating him/her with their natural or extended family, or if the circumstances permit, an adoption or foster placement. This process involves the co-operation of a cross-section of people, resources, and most importantly funds. It is only through the kind providence of the Maltese & Gozitan people, who continually lend a helping hand and offer funds to Ejjew Għandi that the care and services towards these children can be fully guaranteed.
