Ten boys from the slums of Baiganwadi conducted a study on the problems arising out of lack of adequate water in their area. Baiganwadi is located in Govandi, an eastern suburb of Mumbai and falls within M Ward ( an administrative unit of the BMC).
The slum was built on a dumping ground and the water fetched from the ground was brackish and extremely unfit for drinking. Some photographs in the study depict the contestation that exists over water in that area. Apart from buying water the residents invest huge amounts of money in purchasing the infrastructure like cycles, rubber pipes, big drums, chains to seal the drums etc, for transporting and storing water. Some of the major problems that arose due to the non-availability of water in the area have been listed in the subsequent parts. First, a huge chunk of the monthly income is spent on water; second, a huge level of stress persists amongst the children regarding fetching of water.
