It was an exceptional and challenging year for all of us.

The fall semester proceeded because of the courage of our staff and our students. Higher education proved the naysayers wrong as we pressed forward to educate students within the context of a community educational setting rather than being individually isolated. It presented its challenges, but the Barclay College community rose up to meet those challenges with care and dignity. We were more aware of others, and we were required to move out of our comfortable circles to serve others.

Today we are able to turn our attention again to our future. The Strategic Planning Team has set its sights on addressing the 3 R’s of a successful college: recruiting, retention, and raising funds. Our strategic plan initiatives are grouped under three targets: Captivating Quality of Life (recruiting), Dynamic Academic Initiatives (retention), and Innovative Funding (raising funds). This model helps the institution guide all facets of our work toward our overarching vision. It is exciting to see how changes in individual departments trickle up to inspire the greater good of what God is stirring at Barclay College.

We also completed a successful focus visit from the Higher Learning Commission in the fall. With that affirmation in hand from our accreditors, we can finalize our efforts to create a Criminal Justice major.

With an eye on redemptive justice, our efforts will represent the long history of Friends that inspired prison reform in England, respectful work with Native American tribes, and architecture of the Underground Railroad that freed as many as 100,000 slaves.

We must continue to connect innovation with our faith.

It has always been our hallmark.

Today the work of Barclay College continues. We provide Full Tuition Scholarships through your gifts to educate students who might otherwise not receive a college education. We are well on our way to preparing a Nursing Program for accreditation. We are creating effective Bible translators who will proclaim the Good News to the unreached. We will continue to be the global community for higher education for evangelical Friends ministry. Barclay College will always stand firm in its tradition in order to birth transformation.

Your prayers, your support, and your encouragement will fuel us through times of both celebration and uncertainty. We have been reminded of how much we need relationships in this past year. Our future stands open before us; and as we work together, let us step forward to shape it.

ACADEMIC ADVANCEMENT

HLC Affirms Accreditation Tim Hawkins, V.P. of Academic Services, announced that HLC (Higher Learning Commission) notified us that the Institutional Actions Council concurred with the October visiting team’s determination that the College has satisfied all current accreditation concerns. This means we will not

require any additional monitoring prior to our four-year comprehensive visit in the spring of 2023. This paves the way for us to proceed with confidence as we request HLC approval for new academic programs.

“Dr. Keith White, Director of Institutional Effectiveness, and Charity Savage, Coordinator for Institutional Effectiveness, helped us make great strides in assessment that was particularly important in satisfying HLC concerns for the last visit,” Tim said.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION CONSIDERED FOR ONLINE DEGREE We are currently exploring the feasibility of offering our Elementary Education degree online. This will allow us to offer a very popular degree with flexible learning options.

With many degree candidates already working full time jobs, an online degree allows them to attend on their own schedule and continue in their current employment.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM ON TRACK FOR ONLINE PROGRAM

With the positive report from HLC (Higher Learning Commission), we are on track to prepare our Criminal Justice degree program. While we are at the mercy of HLC’s approval process, we hope to have the greenlight in the near future.

Dr. Adrian Halverstadt, Chancellor, is already teaching classes in the field, including Peace and Justice through Community Policing, Christian Foundations of Law and Ethics, Constitutional Law and Criminal Procedure, Criminal Justice System, Corrections, and Current Approaches to Restorative Justice.

Criminal Justice now ranks fifth in demand among degrees most requested in the USA, and a Barclay Criminal Justice degree will be the only one in the nation taught from an evangelical Quaker perspective.

RECOGNITION FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Barclay College has been named BEST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL #8 in “Best Christian Schools for for Psychology Students” by PsychologyDegreeGuide.org.

PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS

The master’s program was ranked in the top 50 M.A. in Theology programs in the nation by Intelligent.com. It named the M.A. in Family Ministries as best in the nation. It also named Barclay as one of the top colleges in Kansas, with the Pastoral Ministries program ranked best in the state.

FUNDRAISING

How do you hold an Auction during a Pandemic?

That was the question that many non-profits had to face during the year of COVID. It was especially difficult when that Auction is critical to the operation of an organization, like the Auction is to Barclay College.

The Ladies’ Auxiliary agonized over that question this past fall.

Their answer: Postpone.

Saturday, October 2nd, 2021

Ladies’ Auxiliary Chair, Kay Unruh, said, “The auction had gone on for 88 years. Its purpose was not only to raise funds, but to bring people together in relationship. It was a reunion of classmates. But COVID would do the opposite. How do we social distance? We didn’t want to put anybody in danger.”

Instead, the Ladies’ Auxiliary opted to postpone the Auction and encourage donors to make a generous gift of the money they would have spent at the Auction.

The result: Over $50,000 was raised out of our $80,000 goal.

“We were astounded at the response,” Kay said. “We had hoped to try in March 2021, but the same issues were there. We wanted the return event to be special. We decided to call the giving for the 2020 event the 89th Annual; and next year, we’ll celebrate the 90th Annual Auction!”

Christmas Wreath Giving Meets Challenge Goal Donors stepped up again for the 2020 Christmas Wreath Challenge. Over $98,000 was raised. Larry Lewis, V.P. of Institutional Advancement, said, “We are so appreciative of our donors. In the midst of new financial strains on the College due to COVID, they have really stepped up. These gifts really change lives. They literally become transformational in the lives of students. Thanks to all who participated.”

ALUMNI PROFILE

Dr. Jim Day, He does not stop!

Now he can watch the sunsets over the lake in Galena, Kansas; but retirement does not keep him from Kingdom work. Jim Day only spent two years at Friends Bible Academy*, but those years set the stage for the rest of his life.

1993 Kansas City flood duty and Commandant of a nine-state regional Officers Candidate School. Upon retirement, he received the highest award for exceptional meritorious conduct from the President of the United States, the Legion of Merit.

Jim Day left home when he was 16.

He grew up in Miami Friends Church in Miami, Oklahoma, and followed many other young Friends by completing high school at Friends Bible Academy in the middle of Kansas.

“I was young and impressionable, but those two years set me on the right road.” Jim was a football and track standout in Miami, Oklahoma; and the Academy coaches became his mentors. “Coaches like Jerry Louthen and Dick Keller pushed and encouraged me,” he said. “The way these two coaches handled themselves as Christian coaches left a deep impression on me and many other athletes.” He was also influenced to become a teacher by Veryl McKinney and Mrs. Mitchem.

He accepted a sports scholarship to Friends University and earned a B.S. in Science in Wichita, lettering all four years in sports. His first teaching and coaching job was at Goddard High School, but the draft caught up to him.

His number was 15.

He entered the Army and became a drill sergeant at Ft. Ord California.

Afterwards, he returned to teaching, but was impressed by a friend who was killed in Vietnam. “If my friend could give his life for our country, I could dedicate my Army career to his memory.” That decision launched a 36-year career in the Army National Guard, serving in several special duties, such as Commander for the

During that time, he earned a master’s degree in School Administration from Emporia State, a Specialist in Curriculum Instruction from Wichita State University, and a doctorate in Superintendency and Finance from Oklahoma State University. He served as Principal of Rose Hill High School and Chanute High School and as Superintendent in Solomon, Kansas, where he retired. Later, he was asked to return as Superintendent in Prairie View, Kansas.

Jim’s interest and support of Barclay College did not end when he left the Academy. Jim joined the Board of Trustees. During his 13 years, Barclay College gained accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), built the Men’s Dorm and the RossEllis Ministry and Fine Arts Center, paid off the debt for the Women’s Dorm, and watched the development of a strong Graduate Program. Jim said his crowning moment was to serve on the Executive Board when Dr. Royce Frazier was appointed as President of the College.

So now that he can sit and watch sunsets, he still is on the go. He was Superintendent of Works for the building campaign to build a Friendship Hall at the Lowell Friends Church, which is debt free. He is serving as President of the Baxter Springs Kiwanis and is the Adjutant for Post 206, Baxter Springs American Legion.

He cannot get away from looking back on his two years at Friends Bible Academy as instrumental in his faith and life choices. He cannot forget going to chapel each day and the witness those leaders gave him throughout his life.

As principal he dealt with many kids who had trials beyond the school building. “My background from the Academy was a strong guiding tool in working with each child,” he says.

His interest in sports did not stop at the principal’s desk. He has officiated at 27 State Wrestling Tournaments and now is floor manager for the 4A State Wrestling Tournament in Salina, Kansas. Along the way, he was named

THE NURSING PROGRAM

Marching toward Accreditation If you ask Kim Hansen, Director of Nursing Education, “What is your biggest challenge in planning for accreditation?” she will answer, “The amount of work.” Not only is she planning curriculum and outcomes for the new program, but she must determine policies, plan facilities, work with partner organizations, plan for hiring staff and faculty, meet with a Program Development Committee, and make sure everything stays within the mission and policies of Barclay College.

But you won’t hear Kim Hansen complain. “I feel completely supported from the staff and faculty at Barclay as well as the stakeholders in the program. I’m enjoying the learning opportunity and growing spiritually, personally, and professionally,” she says.

her timeline is to begin enrollment in the Registered Nurse-to-Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in the fall of 2022. For the B.S.N. degree, enrollment would start in fall of 2023.

A Program Development Committee is her sounding board. They review, appraise, and give direction throughout the program’s progress, making sure it follows Barclay’s beliefs and mission.

All this is in preparation for review and approval by the State Board of Nursing, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in order to complete the accreditation process.

What has Kim learned about Barclay College in the short time she’s been here? “The sincerity of the College’s mission,“ she says. “People live it every day. You can feel the love and peace of Christ on this campus.”

DR. DAVID MARINE MABRY

Following God’s Call David Mabry has a deep and wide background, and Barclay College was wise to appoint him as an administrator and teacher in our School of Graduate Studies.

Recently, David took the position of the Director of the M.A. in Transformational Leadership as well as the Director of the M.A. in Family Ministries. He was also named Associate Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

David grew up in rural western Ohio with very few church ties. He was invited to a youth group where he responded to the message of salvation through Christ, and God’s work and leading in his life began.

Upon attending youth camp, David recalls a “clear call to ministry.” He says, “I felt like God was calling me to be a youth pastor; and at that time, I thought it was for life.” The next calling was to a Christian college.

Malone University in Canton, Ohio, offered the opportunity.

David loved sports, and after serving 10 years as a youth pastor and sports pastor, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) came calling. He became the director for western

Ohio. But David found his calling was even broader. He was hired to be a liaison to the community for Marriage Resource Center, an organization committed to lowering the divorce rate. Here he not only built relationships with pastors but was also trained in how to support marriages.

Although he was a recorded Friends’ pastor since the 1990s, David never wanted to be a senior pastor. But through the relationships developed with senior pastors through Marriage Resource Center, David grew in his call to serve in the local church. In 2008 he was called to be lead pastor at Orange Evangelical Friends Church in Lewis Center, Ohio.

David also knew he had a call to teach, and he wanted to be best equipped to help others. He completed his doctorate in 2015, with a dissertation titled “Impacting Marital Health in the Local Church Context through the Prepare-Enrich Group Program.” As a result, he and his wife started OAR, One Another Relationships, to support and build marriages. “Theresa and I had training, skills, and experience to help marriage relationships become mutually beneficial and

reciprocal,” David says. “‘One Another’ became our theme. There are 50 ‘one anothers’ in the New Testament, and they became the core of our curriculum: Love STEP—LOVE one another, Serve, Touch, Encourage, and have Peace with one another.”

Meanwhile, David had friendships with several Barclay College professors and began to teach as an adjunct in 2015. As a result, he is now the Director of two of the graduate programs and has been named Associate Dean.

Teaching has become a passion, and he enjoys the most “seeing students’ passions come alive with the content of the course and knowing that each student is going to make an impact on the world around them for Christ.”

Recently he has added Director of the M.A. in Transformational Leadership to his roles. “This program has great opportunity to help people outside the church,” David says. And besides that, “transformational leadership and family ministry is a partnering of who David Mabry is,” he adds.

It may be who David Mabry is now, but our guess is that God has more in store for this man who follows God’s call.

ACADEMIC EVENTS

Robert Barclay Institute Offers Bi-Annual Symposiums The Robert Barclay Institute has been established by Barclay College as a scholarly resource to help Quakers look at our past and engage our future. Named for Robert Barclay, a prominent Quaker apologist, the Institute calls 21st century Friends to engage in innovative thinking, creative dialogue, academic research, and scholarly writing. It seeks to bring research and dialogue to the table so that historic Quaker thought can begin to speak effectively in today’s world.

The Fall Symposium featured a presentation by faculty members Drs. Glenn Leppert and David Kingrey who collaborated on a new book called “The Heart of Friends: Quaker History and Beliefs.”

The book is available for purchase on Amazon.

The Spring 2021 Symposium featured Dr. Derek Brown, Vice President of Graduate Studies and Distance Learning at Barclay College, who presented a paper in response to the query, “What is a Quaker pastoral theology?” C. Wess Daniels, Guilford College, NC, and Scott Wagoner, Deep River Friends Meeting, NC, will both give responses via multimedia.

YOUTH MINISTRY WORKSHOP

Explores Faith, Doubt, and Creating Spiritual Depth in Youth On the weekend of November 14, 2020, Barclay College, EFC-MAYM, and Youth Core Ministries (YCM) hosted the 3rd annual Youth Ministry Workshop with special guest Steve Argue from the Fuller Youth Institute.

One highlight included a Friday evening gathering with leaders, along with applicable teaching, discussion, and application related to youth ministry.

ACADEMIC EVENTS

Expanding its Mission Kaleo Academy is a leadership development program and theological institute for high school students hosted by Barclay College.

This past year, Kaleo expanded its mission to serve evangelical Friends through a stronger social media and online presence due to COVID restrictions. This included Kaleo Conversations, Kaleo mini-classes, student-led worship and encouragement, Mental Health Mondays, and Resource Wednesdays.

In December, Kaleo Academy also partnered with Barclay College and Evangelical Friends Mission (EFM) to offer a Virtual Mission Trip. During three virtual nights, 120 participants visited Nepal, the Philippines, and Thailand, cooking food from each country. A cultural orientation, an introduction to the Friends mission network, and a virtual prayer walk were on the agenda, with each evening ending with a Zoom call with each missionary.

Recruitment for the ’21-’22 Cohort has begun. Theology Camp is scheduled July 18-24, 2021, at Barclay College. High school students who want to explore their gifts and callings in more depth are invited to apply or may be nominated by an adult, as we seek to build up a new generation of leaders for the evangelical Friends Church. 5 Kaleo Academy Alumni enrolled as Barclay College students for Fall 2020!

Institute in Biblical Translation Forming at Barclay College With the launch of the M.A. in Biblical Translation, Barclay is also initiating an Institute of Biblical Translation to help coordinate education and educational partnerships that support biblical translation.

The Institute, led by its dean, Dan Kramer, will provide a centralized point for resources such as printed materials, translation tools, volunteer base, promotion, and research into emerging projects.

Dr. Derek Brown, V.P. of the School of Graduate Studies and Distance Education, sees this as an “opportunity for Barclay College to strengthen its mission and broaden its strategic associations.”

CAMPUS LIFE

When a Pandemic Strikes “Two weeks of spring break! At first it was exciting,” said Kaden Huck, senior and President of Student Government. Then two weeks stretched into the rest of the semester, and classes went remote.

“Some liked being remote and being with their families. Others hated it,” Kaden said. “Barclay was their family and they missed that.”

Tim Hawkins, V.P. for Academic Services, commented on the challenges of remote teaching.

“Faculty handled the switch to remote emergency teaching very well, particularly given the short timeframe to prepare. We took a ‘humane’ approach, communicating grace and care for our students over strict adherence to course policies and deadlines. Like many other institutions, we amended our course grading policies to acknowledge that students were being asked to complete schoolwork in environments that were not conducive to remote learning.

These efforts resulted in students feeling cared for during an unprecedented time. It was an opportunity for faculty to show the love of Christ in an unusual way; and unsurprisingly, they rose to the occasion.”

When students returned in the fall, reactions were mixed. “It was weird to work around social distancing,” Kaden said. “The main concerns were health and safety. Some took it extremely seriously, others didn’t.

Some people wore masks when they weren’t required, others complained.”

One of the more difficult places to handle social distancing was in the cafeteria. Jeannie Ross, Director of Food Service, said, “For Fall 2020 the cafeteria made several adaptations to provide the safest environment for students and workers during the pandemic. We served the students instead of letting them dish up their own food, and we used paper products. We required masks while

in the serving line, and limited seating in the cafeteria.”

As Student Government President, Kaden was keenly aware of how COVID affected the atmosphere on campus. “It had a big effect. Events which usually had a good turnout on campus, now had few participants.

Intramural sports participation was down. For a school that prides itself on community, that aspect was hurt,” Kaden concludes.

Kim Hansen, Director of Nursing, arrived on campus in July. Little did she realize the role she would play in monitoring students for COVID. “We started tracking in September,” she said.

“There was a big jump of COVID cases in mid-October, then a small jump in November. Since students returned in January, it’s been much lower.”

Beginning January, Barclay partnered with a clinical laboratory to test students, faculty, and staff. Prior to that, they had to go to a healthcare provider. Barclay also worked closely with Kiowa County Health Department.

If students tested positive, they were put in isolation in the Barclay apartments. If they were exposed, they were quarantined.

“We did our best to meet every student’s need in quarantine, including providing daily virtual contact, quarantine gift bags, meals, and snacks delivered to them daily, and 24-hour contact if needed,” said Ryan Haase, V.P. for Student Services.

Kaden Huck knew what it meant to be in isolation. He tested positive after experiencing symptoms and

was moved to the apartments.

“Food is delivered to you, but you’re all by yourself,” he said. As a member of the basketball team, his positive tests required quarantining the entire basketball team. The first two games were canceled. “I hated being the reason the team missed their games,” Kaden said.

But there were positive takeaways, too. “People have learned to be more respectful of others’ space and the decisions they’re making,” Kaden said.

Kaden says he realizes how much he took for granted. “I definitely took events, concerts, and basketball games for granted. What I considered normal back then is now considered a luxury.”

Family Groups Organized Family Groups is a new idea that emerged from the Student Services Cabinet. “We wanted to do something to help students connect during the social distancing of COVID,” said Brockie Follette, Campus Chaplain. “We also wanted to mix up students from different groups and add in faculty, staff, and community members,” she added.

Groups meet once a week during the Chapel hours. Eleven groups of nine to 11 students were formed, with one or two adult leaders and one or two student leaders.

Cassie Frazier, a group leader, said, “I think that it is important to build an intentional community so that no one is left behind.

It is easy to get swept up into the business of our lives. If we are intentional then it is harder for someone to feel left out or alone.”

KADEN HUCK

Senior and Student Government President Kaden Huck came to Barclay to play basketball. His major – Sports Management and Youth Ministry. When he graduates he wants to coach. But that’s not all he’s found at Barclay. “I’m a better people person,” he says.

“I was home schooled, so Barclay was my first exposure to being around people every day.” He says it has also made him a better leader, with opportunities as a Resident Assistant, a small group leader, and a leader in Student Government. “I’m still working on public speaking,” he added.

Due to the eligibility rules for sports because of COVID, Kaden can return for another year of basketball. “Next year we’ll be as good, maybe better. We’ll have a solid squad next year.”

So Kaden will be back next year.

“Preferably without a mask,” he adds.

School of Graduate Studies DR. DEREK BROWN Barclay College is pleased to announce Dr. Derek Brown has been named as the new V.P. for the School of Graduate Studies and Distance Learning. Derek has served for the past two years as Derek Brown V.P. for Graduate Studies. The new position will bring together undergraduate and graduate online academic services, and he will continue to chair the undergraduate bachelor’s degree program in Pastoral Ministries.

DR. DAVID MARINE MABRY David Mabry has been named the Associate Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and has also been named Director of the M.A. in Transformational Dr. David Mabry Leadership in addition to his position as Director of the M.A. in Family Ministries. He has served as a professor in Theology and Biblical Studies as well as Organizational Leadership. Before coming to Barclay College, David worked with executive leadership since 1990. He earned a D.Min. in Transformational Leadership from Ashland Theological Seminary. He also holds an M.A. in Organizational Leadership–Sports/ Recreational Ministry from Ashland Theological Seminary and a B.A. in Youth and Family Ministries from Malone

University. Currently he is also the Executive Director for One Another Relationships, Inc., which equips people for greater impact through relationship coaching and organizational leadership consultation.

ANGIE WETMORE Angie Wetmore returns to Barclay as the Associate V.P. of Distance Learning. Angie previously held a similar position at Barclay. She earned a B.A. in Ministry (with a triple major in Bible/Theology, Angie Wetmore Pastoral Ministries, and Music Ministries) and an M.S. in Instructional Design and Technology from Walden University.

BILL GALIPAULT Bill Galipault has been named Director of M.A. in Sports Outreach. Bill brings nearly 40 years of sports ministry experience as a coach, domestic missionary, international resident Bill Galipault missionary, church sports ministry pastor, and mission executive. He earned a D.Min. from Azusa Pacific University where his doctoral project was “Spiritual Formation in the Team Sport Environment and its Application for Churches” as well as a M.P.S. from Alliance Theological Seminary, a M.S.Ed. from Lehman College, and B.A. from St. Anselm College.

CHERYL COUCH EARNS DOCTORATE IN EDUCATION Dr. Cheryl Couch recently defended her doctoral dissertation, leading to the Dr. Cheryl Couch completion of a Doctorate in Educational Leadership with a dual emphasis in Teacher Leadership and Higher Education. She completed the program through Southwestern College in Winfield KS. Cheryl received a B.S. in Education in 1986 from Oklahoma Christian College with a double major in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. In 2007, she received an M.S. in Education in Early Childhood Special Education.

Barclay College is pleased to announce Aaron Stokes as the next Registrar. Since 2016, Aaron has served as the Associate V.P. for Academics, overseeing the academic programming for Barclay’s Distance Education offerings. Aaron will take over Registrar duties from Mark Miller, who is taking his well-deserved retirement following the 2020-21 school year.

Leaving a Legacy Two of our longtime administrators/faculty are preparing for retirement.

Larry Lewis, V.P. for Institutional Advancement, and Mark Miller, Registrar, will be retiring from their positions at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

LARRY LEWIS Larry Lewis joined Barclay College in 2013 when Dr. Royce Frazier recruited him while Larry was serving in California at Rose Drive Friends Church and Friends Christian School. Larry and his wife had discussed returning to Kansas to help aging parents, so the offer fit the direction they believed God was leading them.

Larry was also asked to Chair the Sports and Recreation Ministry program and serve as a professor in the Elementary Education program. In addition, he coached volleyball from 2014-2018.

Larry joined Royce in securing funds for the Ross-Ellis Fine Arts and Ministry Center which was completed in 2018. “Royce and I walked around the vacant lot and prayed daily for this building to bring honor and glory to His name. God answers prayer!”

Larry said.

Royce commented, “Larry Lewis has made a remarkable contribution to Barclay College. Under his tenure, our endowment has increased from $1.3 million to over $5 million.

The Ross-Ellis Center was built, and support to Barclay has increased. In the previous nine years before Larry’s arrival, the college raised approximately $12.5 million in support. During Larry’s seven years of service, Barclay received nearly $13 million in support to the institution.”

Larry isn’t totally leaving Barclay. Although he and his wife plan to move to Wichita to be more involved with their family, Larry will continue as Chair of the Sports and Recreation program and will be teaching two days a week. He adds, “The people are what make this place special. I absolutely love to visit alumni and friends of the college and hear the stories of how God used this college to prepare them for their future vocations.”

MARK MILLER Mark Miller began his career with Barclay in 2016. Jim Le Shana approached him about the Registrar position that was opening in Fall 2016. Prior to that, Mark served 32 years in Music Ministry, but had stepped away to help care for his mother. “After my mother passed away in 2015, I began looking for ways to return to a ministry-related job where I could use my gifts and abilities,” Mark said.

Not only did Mark serve as Registrar, his music background was put to work serving as a professor of music, teaching music theory, music history, and conducting. In addition, he oversaw international students, processed veteran benefits, and counseled Associate of Arts students.

Every student has to pass through the Registrar’s office, so Mark has found it very rewarding to help students through the maze of decisions that need to be made in the pursuit of a college education. “When I sense that my counsel has helped a student to discern a critical pathway for organizing and owning how they will achieve their goals, I am grateful to have had a part in helping them discover how God’s call on their life can be realized,” he said.

Dr. Royce Frazier commented, “Mark has performed a remarkable task in assuming the role of registrar at Barclay College. His organizational and administrative skills have allowed us to move through our accreditation processes in a timely manner while maintaining our academic growth and excellence.”

Mary Poppins came to Barclay College ...

And left us with more than a moment in time ...

BY BROCKIE FOLLETTE Barclay College Chaplain, Assistant to the President, Kaleo Academy Director Every night before the cast of Mary Poppins takes the stage, we sing “I Love You Lord;” and after the “amen,” Mr. Banks reminds us, “Let’s go tell a story!”

That is the beauty of the stage. For a moment in time, all creatures gathered under the lights, in the wings, and in the seats become a part of a story.

I used to wonder why musicals seemed so cheesy and Pollyanna-like. Do real life people actually break out into song in the middle of a conversation? I used to wonder until this year of 2020 when hope and joy seem like words that slip through our fingers on a daily basis.

On the last night of the show, as I was helping Cadie (my daughter) change out of her Jane Banks’ clothes for the very

last time, she began to cry, and a “story” rolled off her tongue.

I’m sure she heard it from the imagination of one of the college students, but she was telling it passionately from her heart; and the story was now her own.

“Don’t you remember when the chain of the locket really did break, and I couldn’t get it on? And remember how we woke up this morning and the

cold front moved into Haviland, and the winds changed?

Mary Poppins is gone mom, she’s already gone.”

Thank you God for giving all of us this gift of a moment in time. Now, let’s continue to go tell your story of hope and joy!

And so she was. Mary Poppins moved on from Barclay College. She left our cast and crew, our community, and our crowd participants with a renewed hope and joy. As Jane Banks reminds her father, “We don’t need Mary Poppins anymore... other families will need her.”

I pray the hope and joy all experienced won’t just be for a moment in time, but instead will continue to grow in our hearts and spill out onto others like a spoonful of sugar.

Barclay College theatre brought you the adventure of a dreamer and his brothers, the tale of a girl longing for adventure, and the heartwarming story of a family who needed a little bit of magic. This spring, Barclay College

presented a true David and Goliath story straight from the streets of New York.

NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged

“newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to stand for what’s right.

Newsies was performed April 9-11 and 15-18 in the Ross-Ellis Center for Arts and Ministry.

Lady Bears take 6th in Nation Not only did the Lady Bears clinch the MCCC conference title with a record of 10-1, they clinched the #7 seed for the DII NCCAA National Basketball Tournament. After a good showing at the tournament, they finished in 6th place!

Lady Bears’ head coach Scott Post says, “We had a great recruiting season for the Lady Bears. A good freshman class has joined with our already good upper-class players.” He added, “I’m super proud of the entire season. Our girls accomplished a lot. To finish 6th in the country with the youth we have and my first year as coach is really nice. I’m happy with our results.”

Women’s Volleyball “We had a very talented team of women that all knew the game well and had a lot of fun playing together,” said head coach Justin Kendall. “It was tough to deal with the shortened schedule because of COVID situations, but the team made the most of the time we were able to be on the court playing. Returning players did a great job of providing leadership and solid play, and the new players filled in gaps and competed hard to get their playing time.”

Men’s Basketball Barclay College men’s basketball had a great year, ending with a 19-8 record and a regular season record of 17-2 against NCCAA opponents. The Bears also won the MCCC Conference regular season title. Their season included an upset over the #1 nationally ranked NCCAA DII team, Great Lakes Christian College, Lansing, Michigan. The men beat GLCC 92-81 in a Thanksgiving tournament in Manhattan, Kansas.

Head coach, Shane Shetley, said, “This year’s team came together and played as a team, and the result was fun to watch. On any given night, anyone on the floor could lead the team in points or rebounds. This team fought hard and left it on the floor every night and won as a team. We had a great year and look forward to more great years to come.”

Men’s Soccer

Women’s Soccer coming next Fall We are excited to announce that Barclay is beginning the process of starting a women’s soccer team. Interest in women’s soccer is growing, so this is a great opportunity to bring more students to campus.

Brandon Palmer (2015) has been signed as coach. Brandon was part of the 2013 conference championship soccer team.

We have already begun the process of recruiting and hope to have a full team for 2021 season.

Our men’s soccer team had an interesting year with the loss of many games due to COVID. Coach Austin Ogle has started to build a core of players and is working to bring in a good class of soccer players for this next season. Coach Ogle has also been hired as a recruiter for the College, and he will be able to recruit throughout the year. We look forward to seeing the results of his hard work in the coming year.

Our God is so good, and even through the late nights crying to roommates, long walks along wide main street roads, and classes that make our hair turn gray, God is truly with us.

When I came to Barclay College, I was here to be trained how to be a Christian school teacher by other teachers. During my time here, I believe I was equipped to serve in our school systems as a believer in Jesus Christ. I learned so much in my education courses and saw what it looks like to truly serve Christ in the classroom.

I’ve learned that a godly life arises from the commitment to surrender my life to the plans of God, and this is something that I’ve witnessed that many individuals demonstrate at Barclay College.

God has used Barclay to change my life forever. The student that came to Barclay College four years ago is not the same one graduating now. I have grown in many ways—academically,

Helen Piester Schwarn, 100, died February 4, 2020, at Parkwood Village, Pratt KS. She graduated from FBC in 1939. After graduating from FBC, Helen earned her teaching certificate at Northwestern State University at Alva OK. She was a homemaker and retired from teaching in Kiowa County Schools. On January 11, 1948, Helen married Leonard Schwarm. They were married 64 years at the time of his death in 2012.

James Lee “Jim” Summers, 80, passed away on February 25, 2020, at Golden Oaks Nursing Home, Enid OK. He married Linda Kay Hatfield in 1959. Jim graduated from Friends Bible College in 1978. He and Kay were the Men’s Head Residents while in college. Jim was a retired layman, truck driver, rancher, and hot rod builder. He had three children, and five grandchildren.

Joshua Skyler Walworth left this earth February 25. He was surrounded by his loving family. He graduated from Barclay College. Survivors include his dedicated wife, Sarah; his adoring children, George, Corrina and Isaac; his brother, Jesse; his parents, Dan and Dee, as well as a wealth of loving friends and extended family.

Walter (Bud) Lawrence, 95, passed away April 4 at his residence in Arkansas City, KS. He was in the first graduating class of Friendswood TX high school in 1941.

In 1942 he joined the US Airforce and was a member of the 506 Bomb Squad. During his 21st mission he was shot down over Germany and was immediately captured by the Germans. He was liberated by the English just prior to the end of the war. He wrote a book of his life, “Only by the Grace of God.” After the war he attended FBC where he met and married Letha Brooks of Emporia KS. He was a charter member of the Bayshore Friends Church in Texas. Bud has three daughters and seven grandchildren (one of them is Randi Shetley, Barclay’s Director of Fine Arts) and 25 great-grandchildren.

Shirley (Battin) Conant, 82, passed away April 4 in Edmund OK. She graduated from the Academy in 1950 and the college in 1951. She married Dean Conant (G1952).

Shirley loved music and taught piano lessons until her passing. She was an excellent pianist and sang with several music groups while at FBC. Shirley is survived by four children, 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Maurice Chandler, 85, passed away on April 19, 2020.

He married Ellouise Fankhauser. They had five daughters, 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Maurice worked for 19 years as the Vice President of Development at his alma mater, George Fox College. Later he worked for Barclay College in fund raising. He was the president of Barclay College for five years. Nearing the age of 70, Maurice and Ellouise rode their bicycles across the U.S. from Portland ME to San Diego.

Wilda (Oliver) Boyd, 91, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2020, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon IN. She was born in Dresden KS and graduated from Penrose CO High School in 1947. Wilda graduated from FBC in 1953. She married Joe Boyd (1952) in May 1953. They pastored the Belleville Friends Church in Belleville KS for 15 years, where Joe had a dual career of pastor and school teacher. When Joe retired in 2006, they moved to Indiana.

Wilda has three children, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

Dr. Ronald Worden, 82, passed away June 25, 2020, in Houston TX. He earned an Associate Degree from Barclay College in 1958 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Fox College. Ron received his Master of Divinity degree from Harvard University in 1967 and a Ph. D. at Princeton Theological Seminary, where he was mentored by Bruce Manning Metzger, the translator of the New Revised Standard version of the Bible. Teaching was a passion that he shared with his wife Barbara, who earned her doctorate at Brown University. Together they have taught at George Fox College, Barclay College, and Houston Graduate School of Theology. Barbara preceded Ron in death. Despite his academic credentials, Ron was a humble, soft-spoken man with a deep love for educating people about the scriptures.

Bruce Newby, 78, passed away on June 28, 2020. He graduated from Gate OK high school and attended Friends Bible College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. He married Joyce Clark in 1963 and was married for 57 years. Bruce’s hobby was training horses and team roping. When he pastored the Chandler Friends Church, he was given a horse trailer as a Christmas gift.

Bruce and Joyce have been ministers at Friends Churches in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Carla Slief Woods, 61, died June 30, 2020. She attended Friends Bible College during the 1978-1979 school year. She married Dan Woods in (G1958) 1991. Carla was a member of the Haviland Friends Church and Haviland Quilters. She worked as a custodian at Pratt Southwest Elementary. Carla has seven children and 18 grandchildren.

Continued Jerry Louthan died on August 13, 2020, from dysautonomia, a condition which affects the nervous system. He attended Friends Haviland Academy throughout his junior high and senior high school years and entered Friends Bible College in 1956, graduating in 1958. He attended Pittsburg State University (KS), where he played football and graduated with an M.S. in Health Science and Education in 1962. He married Mary Yvonne Houston in 1958. After graduation, they traveled to Newberg OR, where he entered the field of education for the next 40 years. In 1970 they moved to Friendswood TX where he continued his teaching career, serving as the youth teacher at the Friends Church and coaching at Pearland High School.

In 2002, Jerry retired from Pearland High School and continued serving as a Christian educator.

Eunice Kinser, 83, died August 17, 2020. Eunice married Merl Kinser, whom she met at Friends Bible College. They were married for 62 years. Merl and Eunice pastored Friends churches in Oklahoma and Kansas during 52 of their years together. Eunice came to Friends Bible College from Northbranch KS, which her sisters, Mary Binford and Ruth Smitherman, also attended. Survivors include her husband and two children.

Gail W. Hancock, 75, died August 19, 2020. He attended Friends Bible College, KSU, Kansas State Teachers College, World Wide College of Auctioneering, Indiana University’s Auctioneers Institute and was a licensed realtor. He married Mary Pauleen Lutes in 1967. He was a Christian businessman and auctioneer. He and his wife operated The Trading Post, The Pottery Shed, Gifts Plus, Precious Treasures, Bookends Books, and Flint Hills Auction.

Jeffery Christensen passed away on August 30, 2020.

He attended Barclay College after graduating from high school in 1981. He married Shari Tilley in 2001. Jeff’s father was Les Christensen who coached basketball and soccer at the College from 1970 to 1963. He has three daughters, Heather, Lauren, and Shelby and one son, Michael.

Lula Jean (Hutson) Schafer, 94, passed away September 12, 2020. She attended Friends Bible College. She married Calvin Schafer and they farmed his family homestead in Oklahoma, then moved to Tulsa where they attended the Friends church. Survivors include her children, Judy and Steve.

Ellen (Plank) Winters, 89, died September 17, 2020.

She graduated from Friends Haviland Academy in 1948 and attended Friends Bible College. She retired from her final job with Next Step Network, a rehab center in Guymon OK. Ellen was always in awe of the sacrifice her father made to send her to the Academy and College.

She had two sons, seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. For the last four years she resided with her son, Mark, in Plano TX. Janet (Smith) Wheeler, 91, passed away on October 3, 2020. She married Lyle Wheeler while they were attending school at Friends University. Janet taught home economics, typing, and shorthand at the Friends Bible College from 1955 to 1957, while Lyle taught science classes. They served as missionaries to Burundi Africa from 1957-1963. Janet spent her later years at Friendsview Manor in Newberg OR. James Edward Leininger, 93, died October 29, 2020 in Hugoton KS. He worked as a farm hand, hospital orderly, and at a meat packing plant before being drafted to serve in the Korean War. He returned to work in Hay Springs NE and married Roberta Allen in 1958. He attended Friends University, Chadron State, and earned a M.S. from Emporia State University. He taught high school science in Nebraska before moving to Haviland to teach at Barclay College in 1972. He taught there until his retirement.

Floyd Ferguson, 88, died November 3, 2020, at his home in Hutchinson KS. He graduated from Friends Haviland Academy in 1950 and Friends Bible College in 1952. Floyd owned the Ferguson Oil company at Haviland for 40 years.

He married Estalene Glover in 1956. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage. Floyd had three children, 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Keith William Clements died November 14, 2020.

He graduated from Friends Academy and attended Friends Bible College in Haviland, Venard College in Iowa, and Emporia State University. He worked in Quality Control at Cessna Fluid Power in Hutchinson KS for thirteen years. In 1973, he married Paula Sue Smith in Hutchinson.

He graduated the Wichita State University Physician’s Assistant program in 1987 and practiced in Kansas and Nebraska. Keith was involved in a variety of church ministries during his lifetime.

In 2015, Keith was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and later, dementia. While in a residence home, he spent many hours “assisting” the staff with nursing duties and listening to other residents describe their ailments and concerns. He passed away there on November 14, 2020, at the age of 70 years.

Eleanor (Wagner) Myers, 91, died December 6, 2020.

She graduated from Haviland Friends Academy in 1946.

She married Robert Myers in Riverton in 1947. She sang solos with the FBC choir while in school. Before moving to Baxter Springs from California, Eleanor was a child actress, appearing in films and print advertisements. She had nine children, 27 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren. Eleanor was a member of Apostolic Faith Chapel in Baxter Springs.

Sylvia Sue Morley, 80, of Hutchinson, died February 6, 2021, at her home. Sylvia graduated from Matfield Green High School and Friends Bible College. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education from Emporia State University. Sylvia married Loren D. Morley in 1977. He died in 1990. Sylvia’s teaching career spanned 43 years as she taught English at the middle school, high school, and college levels at Lyons, Valley Center, Belleville, Dighton, Utica, Chase County, and Barclay College.

IVOL (Ferguson) Ellis, 92, passed away on December 8, 2020. She attended the academy and graduated in 1946.

She married Alvin Ellis, a student at FBC. She lived most of her life in Pueblo CO, where she and her husband farmed. Her dream was to go to Hawaii. Her wish came true in 2016 when her son, Larry, and daughter, Janet, took her to Hawaii and she went snorkeling at 89 years of age. Ivol had five children, seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Chuck Townsend passed away February 23, 2021, after battling multiple myeloma for several years. He was a graduate of the Academy and Friends Bible College and pastored in several yearly meetings as well as being active in Child Evangelism Fellowship and Fellowship of Christian Magicians. In school he was active in soccer, drama, music, and many shenanigans. In his later years he moved back to Haviland and was a big supporter of events at Barclay.

Francis Earl McKinney died December 17, 2020. He graduated from Friends Bible College in 1951, where he enjoyed being on the basketball team and going out with traveling gospel teams. There, he also met Bulah Alta Ferguson from Liberal KS, whom he married in 1951.

Together they embarked on their lifelong calling (over 65 years) to serve as pastors of Friends churches in Oklahoma and Kansas, including Pratt, Plains, and Argonia KS and culminating as an associate pastor of Northridge Friends Church in Wichita KS. Sheldon Francis Cox, 82, passed away December 19, 2020.

He graduated from Vilas CO High school, Friends Bible College, and Friends University. Sheldon and Elda Ann Thornburg were married in 1959. He pastored Bucklin Bible Church, Homestead Friends Church near Emporia, Oklahoma City Friends Church, Derby Friends Church, and was Chaplain at B.G. Products in Wichita for 10 years.

He also enjoyed serving at Camp Quaker Haven in many capacities for many years. He enjoyed 56 years of ministry before retiring in 2015.

Willard Ferguson, 83, passed away at home on January 26, 2021. He lived a life of service to Christ as a missionary teacher in Burundi and Rwanda Africa. Willard graduated from Friends Bible Academy in 1956 and the College in 1958.

He continued his education at Fort Hays State College where he earned a Master of Science Degree. He married Doris Thornburg in 1959. In 1962 Willard and Doris, with their infant son, left for Burundi Africa, where they served as Friends missionaries for many years.
