Behind the chair with Brodie Raeside: ‘We’re crafting people’s identities, not just making hair shorter’ When Brodie Raeside (28) swapped boxing gloves for barber shears, he was looking for breathing room, a career that would bend to the will of his passions. What he found instead was a calling that would take him from quiet corners of England to the bustling stages of BarberSociety Live and Taiwan. With Fleetwood Mac as his soundtrack and an eye for longer locks, Raeside isn’t just cutting hair, he’s reshaping how we think about the craft itself.

Unexpected beginnings “I probably joined barbering for all the wrong reasons, really,” Brodie admits with a laugh. As a former band member and amateur boxer, he was initially drawn to the profession for what seemed like a laid-back lifestyle that would accommodate his passions.

“Everyone made barbering sound really flexible, that you could work your own hours, you can kind of do it anywhere in the world, and I thought that sounds laid back.”

Reality quickly set in. “Obviously it demands so much of your time, it’s long days and everything else.”

But what began as a practical career choice sparked something unexpected during Raeside’s training at the Sid Sottung Academy. “That was where I was like, I want to do what he does,

I want to teach.”

From lockdown to success story In 2021, as barbershops were permitted to reopen after the final COVID lockdown, Brodie took the leap and opened his own shop. “I just wanted a space that was my own, that was a little bit more relaxed,” he explains. The timing proved fortuitous.

“It was crazy because everyone was dying for a haircut,” Raeside recalls. Starting with just himself and one other barber, they were immediately busy. “We were quite fortunate because normally there’s obviously a building process, people don’t know who you are or where you are, but we were quite fortunate to be moving home to the town that we’re actually from.”

Four years later, Raeside’s appointment-only shop continues to thrive. “It’s tucked out of the way and it’s a nice place that I like all day. It’s busy, but I work in hourly slots, everything is just steady.”

Finding his calling in education Brodie’s journey with the Great British Barber Bash team began around the same time he opened his shop. Initially doing online demonstrations during the pandemic, he found himself developing crucial communication skills.

“They were kind of a live chat where people could ask questions.

So it gets you just in the practice of really overly communicating so that people understand,” Raeside explains. This experience laid the groundwork for what would become a thriving career in education.

Today, Raeside’s work takes him across Europe and as far as Asia.

“We’ve been doing Amsterdam, Italy. We’ve been to Taiwan...

We’re in Copenhagen in a couple of weeks. It’s just getting better and better really.”

“I think communication is everything. There are a lot of barbers that do fantastic haircuts, but if you don’t have an understanding of your process and the ability to communicate that effectively, that’s what it’s all about.”

Balance and perspective The variety his educational work brings has enhanced Brodie’s appreciation for the craft. “The fact that I’m not in the barbershop all the time, it makes being in the barbershop nicer. It doesn’t get boring.

It doesn’t get stale.”

This balance has become vital to Raeside’s growth. “I find that the more I teach, the more I learn.

I’m just getting better and better from working in different places with different people.”

When asked about his most memorable experience, Brodie doesn’t hesitate: “Getting to work out in Asia, in Taiwan. I’ve never been so far from home. I’ve never been somewhere so different from home.”

Behind the scenes with Garry Spencer Working alongside Garry Spencer, founder of the Great British Barber Bash team, has been transformative for Brodie’s career. “Garry’s fantastic.

He’s a man that’s nonstop,” Raeside says with admiration.

The relationship has opened doors Brodie couldn’t have imagined.

“He’s put me in touch with so many people that I now really, really appreciate. He’s given me so many relationships with other barbers and hairdressers, and also with

brands.” This includes his ambassador role with Osmo, a partnership now entering its third year.

And what about behind the scenes? Raeside shares with a smile, “We have an early morning yoga club when we travel, so we’ll wake up and we’ll all have a little yoga session together sometimes.” Who would have thought the barbering elite start their mornings with downward dog? “He’s a big yoga man, Garry,” Brodie adds with a grin.

Brodie at BarberSociety Live As a regular fixture at BarberSociety Live since 2022, Brodie Raeside’s role reached new heights in 2025 when he stepped up as creative lead for the Great British Barber Bash education team. “This was my favourite year so far,” he enthuses. “I always rave about BarberSociety Live.

The new venue was incredible, and this year was truly a level up.”

For their 2025 showcase, Raeside curated a 90s streetwear and sports aesthetic that set their presentation apart. The real innovation came in the format.

For the first time, Brodie and his team hosted in-depth lookand-learn sessions before their main stage performance.

“I was able to curate a full collection of models and demonstrate our entire process,” he explains. “Normally, we do most of the work backstage and only show the final models on stage.

This time, we did everything with an audience watching.”

This approach gave attendees unprecedented access to their creative methods. “People got to see behind the scenes of everything. What we do on stage is just a small part of the full experience.”

The response exceeded his expectations. “The look-andlearns were absolutely packed, and when we hit the main stage, people were genuinely engaging with what I was doing, nodding along and connecting with it,” Raeside recalls. “So many people came up afterwards to share their appreciation. That moment on stage, seeing everyone taking something valuable away: that’s the highlight of my three years at BarberSociety Live. It was absolutely brilliant.”

Crafting identity, not just haircuts When it comes to barbering trends in 2025, Brodie sees a significant shift in the industry. “I think we’re at a point in history where everything is more versatile than it’s ever been. It’s way more diverse than it’s ever been.”

Unlike previous decades where haircuts were easily identifiable by era, modern barbering has become more individualized.

“What I will say is, I think we’re no longer just making hair shorter.

We are crafting people’s identities and how they want to present themselves to the world.”

Locally, Raeside is known for his skill with longer hairstyles, a niche many barbers feel less confident in. “The long hair is on trend,” he notes, embracing this growing demand.

Authenticity in an age of AI In an industry increasingly influenced by technology, Raeside remains committed to authenticity. While many barbers use AI to generate content captions, he prefers the personal touch. “For me personally, I want my captions to be crafted by me.

I like thinking of funny captions.”

Brodie’s philosophy extends to his approach to social media, where he believes personality is the differentiator. “There’s a sea of thousands and thousands of barbers putting on very similar haircuts all the time. It’s only really your personality that’s going to set you apart.”

Fleetwood Mac and pink gloves When it comes to creating the perfect barbershop atmosphere, music plays a crucial role.

For Brodie, the choice is clear.

“I love Fleetwood Mac. It puts me in such a good mood to cut hair,” he enthusiastically shares.

“It’s chilled out. Everybody enjoys it. And it’s timeless.”

After years behind the chair, barbers inevitably collect strange client interactions. When asked about his most memorable, Raeside doesn’t hesitate.

“This is crazy, man,” he begins, clearly still amused by the memory. “A client came in and through COVID, we were all wearing gloves to cut hair just for the hygiene. And he asked me if he could take a pair of the gloves home.”

Brodie’s accommodating nature led to an unexpected revelation.

“I was like, you can if you want.

He told me that his wife had a

fetish for rubber gloves.”

The specificity of the request makes the story even more surreal.

“He said he had some at home, some black ones, but I was wearing pink. And he was like, she’ll love the pink.”

Looking forward while staying grounded With Fleetwood Mac playing in his shop and a reluctance to overshampoo in the summer months, Brodie maintains a refreshingly grounded approach to his craft.

Raeside’s goals remain focused on expansion rather than reinvention. “I am enjoying what I’m doing. I just want to do more of it. I want to do more shows.

I want to do more travel, meet more people and just do what I’m doing on a much larger scale.”

For a career that began as a means to an end, barbering has become a passionate journey that continues to unfold in unexpected and rewarding ways for Brodie Raeside. “It’s all going the right way,” he concludes. “So I’m just enjoying the ride, really.”

Spotlight on diversity, skills & atmosphere What a day, what a vibe! On Sunday, April 13, Hemkade 48 in Zaandam was buzzing with barbers, brands, and visitors for the 8th edition of BarberSociety Live – the ultimate barbering event in the Benelux. More visitors than ever came together for a full day of inspiration, education, battles, and the very first Wet Shave Competition in the Netherlands!

The vibe? Fantastic. The line-up? Unbeatable.

The trends? More diverse than ever.

An all-star line-up This year’s line-up was out of this world. So many top talents hit the stage! An absolute crowd pleaser was social media sensation Sam Rascals (yes, the one from Geordie Shore), sponsored by Fresha. Also impressive was the ‘RACE’ collection from the Menspire artistic team – a tribute to racial diversity – presented by Josh Lamonaca alongside Eoghan Murphy.

The British Barber Bash Education Team did not disappoint either: Brodie Raeside and Brandyn Murphy wowed the crowd with a show full of 90s streetwear and sporty styles. New this year was their Look & Learn session prior 12

to the stage performance – a valuable addition.

Also a first: Ema Medina, the celebrated barber from Uruguay, performed for the first time in the Netherlands alongside top Spanish talent Oscar Mendoza.

Scapicchio Accademia, the famous Italian shaving family, kicked off with a demonstration of traditional wet shaving techniques. Meanwhile, Adam Szulc (known for his book on barbering) gave a sneak peek of his upcoming documentary TV series.

Top educator Sid Sottung, the Spanish duo Fran Aranda & Ismael de Mora, and the BarberSessions radio show with energetic host Dario J. Braun all brought the stage to life. Dario’s colleagues Rex and Bradley demonstrated their cutting skills live.

New this year: presenter Boudewijn Jurriaans – aka Barber Birdman – who hosted the event with flair throughout the day.

The Battles The energy on the competition floor was electric! A total of 24 barbers from across Europe competed in various categories, plus 15 students in the Young

This year’s BarberSociety Battle resulted in a magnificent victory for Khalid Sedo – crowned BarberSociety Winner of the Year 2025. He beat competitors from Germany, Greece, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Romania.

His colleague Hazem Kraem came in second, and former Young Talent winner Temesgen Kahsu made his mark again with a nice third place. Summa College in Eindhoven produced the BarberSociety Young Talent Winner: Jay Alberto. Second and third place went to Barberschool Amsterdam with Sam Doornenbal and Lars Takken respectively.

The prize pool was packed: no less than € 9,500 in cash, clippers, shears, grooming products, whisky, and more.

The battles were judged by a rotating jury including Alan Findlay (UK), Dennis Kil (NL), Nero de Boer (NL), Ronald de Bont (NL), Sid Sottung (UK) and Vito Skeen Calo (IT).

The Comeback of the Wet Shave Relaxation and grooming are back – and wet shaving is taking center stage. Together with Scapicchio Accademia from Italy, we hosted the Scapicchio Trophy - the very first Wet Shave Competition in the Netherlands. A modern twist on historical shaving – with hot towels, traditional techniques, and precision. Giuseppe Policastro from Italy took home the prize, followed by Christof Brans from Belgium and Nikodem Szulc from Poland. The competition even made it into

the national press, with a nice article in the national newspaper ‘De Telegraaf ‘among others!

Trends spotted on the floor The shows and demos revealed clear trends in men’s grooming: Long(er) hair is hot – from casual long to punky strands.

The mullet remains popular, along with burst fades and French crops, often paired with longer necklines.

Color is back: we saw bold shades such as blue, green and icy blonde.

Spikes and blocky cuts are making a comeback – bold & sharp is back in style.

and Josh Lamonaca – two icons who’ve been long-time contributors to the BarberSociety community and global barbering scene. Much respect!

Khalid Sedo BarberSociety Winner of the Year 2025

Khalid Sedo is from Iraq and has been living in the Netherlands for ten years. He is only 24 years old and has already been through a lot. At the age of fourteen, he fled Iraq on his own and came to the Netherlands. He now lives with his sisters in Oldebroek, where he is slowly but surely building a life for himself as a barber. After finishing second in the BarberSociety Battle in 2023, he decided to compete again this year and go for the title at BarberSociety Live on Sunday 13 April. He succeeded, and as BarberSociety Winner of the Year, he can now call himself the Best Barber in Europe! In addition to the grand prize, he also won the categories “Cleanest Fade” and “Old School Scissor Cut”, which earned him €1,500 in prize money and product packages from sponsors worth approximately €5,000!

He competed against participants from Germany, Greece, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Romania.

His colleague Hazem Kraem, who also works at barbershop chain De Praatkamer, came in second place, and third place went to Temesgen Kahsu, who was BarberSociety Young Talent Winner of the Year in 2023.

The jury consisted of Alan Findlay (UK), Dennis Kil (NL), Nero de Boer (NL), Sid Sottung (UK) and Vito Skeen Calo (IT).

Read his fascinating story.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Where are you from?

“I fled Iraq on my own at age 14 and ended up at a refugee center in Ter Apel. That was a tough time – without parents, in a strange country, and surrounded by strangers. Later I was moved to another facility where, luckily, my uncle and two cousins were staying. My uncle truly took on the role of a father figure for me.

My aunt was already living in the Netherlands.

In total, I spent five years in asylum seekers’ centers. After three years, my parents were able to join me through family reunification. I’m so grateful they made it here safely. Eventually, we were given two social housing units in Oldebroek. I live with my two sisters in one, and my parents live just down the street.”

How did you get into barbering?

“Cutting hair was something I always enjoyed. As a hobby, I started cutting friends, family, and housemates at the asylum seekers’ center. One day my cousin, also a barber, said: ‘ Why not take this seriously?’

That was the moment I decided to pursue it professionally.

I enrolled in the two-year barber program at Aventus in Deventer.

Then I interned at Jack’s Barbershop in Elburg and worked four and a half years at De Praatkamer in Zwolle. I’ve always been creative, and thanks to my cousin, I found my passion.”

What does barbering mean to you?

“To me, it’s more than just cutting hair. It’s creative, personal, and about connection.

The relationship with clients is just as important as the technical skill. You build real bonds, you talk, you listen, you inspire. Sometimes I feel like a therapist, haha – and that’s what makes this job so special.”

Who inspires you?

“Not surprising: Josh Lamonaca is my biggest inspiration. His work is creative, technically flawless, and innovative. I also admire Rawaa Akram and Barber Emi. He taught me the importance of styling. Ema Medina is also a great inspiration to me. I learn from them how to combine technique with creativity.

They show that cutting is more than just craftsmanship — it’s also a form of expression.”

Why did you want to compete in the BarberSociety Battle?

“In 2022, I visited BarberSociety Live for the first time because my colleague Jan Willem was participating in the Battle.

I immediately felt at home; it’s like one big family. You connect with people in just one day.

Everyone is there to support, inspire and motivate each other.

You learn from each other, you want the best for each other, and that’s what makes it so special.

That motivated me to participate.

It was my dream to be at such an event myself one day.

For me, the BarberSociety Battle is more than just a competition.

It’s an event where I can show my passion for the profession and my work. I work every

day to refine my techniques and develop my own style.

I see the BarberSociety Battle as an opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone. I love performing under pressure and letting my creativity shine. It is precisely in such a setting that I feel motivated to get the best out of myself.

In addition, it is important for me to measure myself against other barbers and be inspired by their work. For me, it was not just about winning, but above all about personal growth and building connections.”

How did you prepare for the Battle? “ For this edition, I decided to compete in all three categories.

Each one demands something different: Freestyle is all about creativity and freedom; Cleanest Fade requires precision and control; and Old School Scissor Cut is all about pure technique and feel. I wanted to prove I could bring something to the table in every category.

In my spare time, I practised at home in a small shed. I worked on my models, techniques, styling – really down to the last detail.

This time, I didn’t just want to perform well technically, I also wanted to tell a story through my work. The models were important in this respect; I chose my models not just based on looks but also on personality – the cut had to match the person.

This year I focused most on the Old School Scissor Cut. It’s one of the most difficult yet beautiful techniques – everything has to be

precise and perfect, using only scissors and razor. It’s not a style I do often at the shop, so I practiced extra hard.”

What went well, and what would you do differently in hindsight?

“My preparation was good, but in the Freestyle I actually finished the haircut too quickly in terms of cutting and fading – within five minutes – which left little time to really show off my techniques. Maybe I could have timed that part better. But I’m still proud that I tried and created something unique.”

You also competed in 2023. What did you do differently this time?

“Definitely. In 2023, I focused mostly on speed and precision.

This year I really wanted to express my own style. I paid more attention to detail, storytelling, and styling. Not just technically, but artistically. For me, it was about showing my creativity, conveying my vision.”

And it worked – you won!

How did that moment feel?

“When I heard I’d won two categories, I had a feeling... but when they announced my name as the overall winner, everything froze for a moment.

I felt immense pride – not just because I won, but because I had dared to show myself, my style, my story. You’re standing there on stage among barbers you respect – and then suddenly you’re the center of attention.

It was a mix of gratitude, 28

euphoria, and validation that I’m on the right path.

It showed me I’m operating at a high level, that I am really good at what I do. I’ve invested so much in myself – time, energy, dedication. Life hasn’t been easy, but I’ve always fought to stand up for myself. And I wanted to show: I’m not just any barber. I really have something special to offer.”

What happened after your victory?

“My family was incredibly proud and my socials exploded. The best

part was coming home with all those prizes – my whole family and some friends were waiting. We really celebrated together.”

And how was it walking into the barbershop the next day?

“Legendary! The energy was amazing. Clients came in joking like, ‘Do we need to pay double now?’ or ‘Are we dealing with a celebrity here?’ It felt like I went from barber to rock star overnight, haha. But what meant the most was that people were genuinely happy for me. There was pride, not only because of the title, but also

because it meant something for the shop and the level we all set.”

What was your biggest challenge in the lead-up to the Battle?

“Just before the Battle, I was going through a tough time full of doubt and negativity. I felt like people didn’t believe in me – and it affected my motivation. But that’s exactly what pushed me to look for something to empower me. The Battle became my way of recharging and proving I was building, not breaking. It wasn’t just a technical challenge, but a personal one – and that made the win even more meaningful.”

Have you been able to hold onto that feeling after the Battle?

“Yes, for sure. It boosted my self-confidence. I’ve received so many positive messages – from clients, friends, even other barbers who competed. That’s what makes these events so powerful: it’s not just about the trophy, but the people you meet and the connections you make.

That really stays with you.”

Any advice for barbers competing next time?

“Stay true to yourself. Don’t get distracted by what others are doing – your vision is what makes you unique. Be well-prepared – not just technically, but also in terms of working within the time limit. That really makes a difference. Choose a model who can showcase your work in terms of appearance and hair structure.

Show yourself, be creative, and trust in what you have to offer.

And remember: it’s not just about winning, but about growing, about connections, and about daring to put yourself out there.

And perhaps most importantly: enjoy the moment. It’s easy to get caught up in stress, but it’s when you enjoy cutting hair that your energy comes across.”

What are your plans for the future?

“I want to open my own barbershop in or around Zwolle.

Many of my clients are from that area. My dream is to create

a creative barber space where technique, art, and education come together. And I’d love to do shows – nationally and internationally.”

Lastly, is there anything you’d like to share with our readers?

“For me, barbering is more than just technique – it’s art. Art is the one form of creativity we consciously choose to be ourselves. It’s a gateway to a world without boundaries of time or place. As a barber, I can express my vision and creativity in my own way. It’s a process of self-discovery, where I take both myself and my clients on a journey.

It’s not just about the haircut – it’s about creating an experience where craftsmanship and art meet. It’s not always easy, but the passion makes every challenge worth it. And this is just the beginning. I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

What did you think of the BarberSociety Battle 2025 overall?

“I thought it was absolutely amazing. The whole event was spectacular. The battles were impressive. The standard from all the competitors was incredibly high, and the quality of the judges and the event itself was outstanding. Honestly, it’s one of the best barber battles I’ve ever been to.”

Did you notice any particular trends during the competition?

“The level of technical work has really gone up. We’re seeing a much more premium quality of barbering. There’s a clear rise in combining scissor work with clipper work, and longer styles are becoming more popular again.”

Why do you think Khalid Sedo won?

“The winner stood out because everything he did was at such a high level—it was all premium quality, which is why he deserved to win.”

What skills are essential to succeed in barber battles?

“If I had to give barbers some advice for succeeding in competitions, I’d say: keep it simple. Choose a model with amazing hair – that makes all the difference. And for the Cleanest Fade competition, I’d strongly recommend using a detachable blade clipper. They’re faster, sharper, and more powerful, which really helps you speed up.

So the key points are: strong model, great hair, and above all —practice, practice, practice.”

From YouTube tutorials on Bonaire to the big stage at BarberSociety Live. 17-year-old Jay Alberto surprised everyone, including himself, by winning the BarberSociety Young Talent Battle 2025 on April 13, representing Summa College. With his freestyle spikes look and sharp scissor cut, he convinced the jury and beat 15 students from barber schools across the country. Along with the title and trophy, he also received generous product prizes from sponsors.

The jury of this 8th edition consisted of Alan Findlay (UK), Dennis Kil (NL), Ronald de Bont (NL) and Nero de Boer (NL).

Time to get to know this rising star.

And you study at Summa College in Eindhoven?

“That’s right! I’m training to be a barber there. They don’t offer that programme in Roermond, so I commute every week.

I’m now in the first year of the two-year programme.”

Congratulations, Jay! How did it feel to be crowned Young Talent winner?

“Thank you! I really didn’t expect it – I thought maybe I’d get third place. When they announced third and second and I still hadn’t been called, I figured I was out.

I had some doubts about my old-school scissor cut – I thought my lines weren’t clean enough.

But then they called my name… it was such a surprise! My mom was there and started screaming with joy. I called my father right away.

Everyone was so proud.”

Let’s start from the beginning.

Where does your passion for barbering come from?

“I grew up on Bonaire and started watching YouTube videos from 360Jeezy when I was just seven.

He had the same hair type as me and showed how to create cool styles. I was hooked – I wanted to learn it too. I wanted to cut my friends’ hair, but of course, no one trusted a seven-year-old with clippers. I kept asking and eventually got the chance.

So I started cutting hair outside, in front of our house. Ever since I was young, I’ve dreamed of opening my own barbershop.

In fact, as a child, I had already come up with a name for it: TNJ Barbershop.”

Did you get any guidance in Bonaire?

“Yes, at Doran Barbershop.

After school, I’d hang out there for hours watching them work.

One day, Doran, the owner, let me cut a customer for the first time – I’ll never forget that.

He taught me all kinds of techniques and even gave me clippers to practice at home.

He really meant a lot to me.”

When did you move to the Netherlands?

‘When I was fifteen. There aren’t many training opportunities on Bonaire if you want to become a barber. So my mom and I moved here for better prospects.

She was able to do her work online, so that worked out well.

We now live in Roermond.”

You’re also working at a barbershop, right?

“Yes, I work at Barbershop Picobello in Roermond. I started there as an intern through school and now I work five days a week alongside my training. My boss, Tarek, has taught me a lot – especially about blow-drying.

For the Battle, I practiced freestyle a lot at school and worked hard on the scissor cut – I found that the most difficult because it’s purely comb and scissor work.”

Who are your biggest inspirations in the industry?

“Besides 360Jeezy, I follow all kinds of barbers on Instagram – from the Netherlands, the U.S., Bonaire, you name it. I love seeing different styles and techniques.”

How did you end up in the Young Talent Battle?

“My teacher, Tessa, asked our class who wanted to join.

I thought, why not? So I raised my hand – honestly, I did it just for fun at first. I had never done anything like this before.

But once I was in, I got serious and started training hard.”

How did you prepare?

“I practiced a lot, especially on the freestyle and old school scissor cut. At first, I didn’t know what freestyle look to create, so I started scrolling through Pinterest. I found a spiky, punk-inspired style – and that became my look. Tessa helped me with the styling and makeup.

She really supported me.”

Were you nervous during the battle?

“Oh, for sure. When the timer started, the pressure kicked in.

But I had trained to work within the time. I could finish the freestyle look in about 30 minutes.

And it was so cool to see what the others were doing – the whole event was such a great experience.”

What did you think of BarberSociety Live overall?

“Really cool. There was so much to see and do. I walked around, watched shows, and of course checked out the battles in the afternoon. It was really inspiring.

I’ll definitely participate again next year!”

Lastly – any advice for barbers who want to enter the Battle?

“Definitely. Don’t be afraid.

If you love it, just go for it.

Believe in yourself, train hard, and follow your dream.

You never know what might come of it.”

How did people react in your barbershop after your win?

“Everyone was excited.

Clients congratulated me, and since then I’ve been fully booked every day! So cool.”

What are your future plans?

“I want to work a lot, learn as much as I can, and eventually open my own barbershop. Or actually – multiple shops in different places. Maybe even one on Bonaire. That would be special, going back to where it all started.”

Ronald de Bont: Jury Member – BarberSociety Young Talent Battle What did you think of the BarberSociety Young Talent Battle 2025?

“The field of participants was nicely diverse: lots of different styles and a high level of skill! It was a great platform to see the craftsmanship and enthusiasm of the new generation of barbers.”

Were there any particular trends visible during the battle?

“What struck me was that the participants really dared to think outside the box. The use of colour was beautifully combined with clothing, often in a thematic and consistent way.

You can also see that barbers are getting better and better at their craft – the profession is clearly growing.”

Why do you think Jay Alberto won?

“The jury judges on several points. The overall look is important, of course, but so is the process of getting there: the plan and the execution.

Neat sectioning, good use of tools, and the beautiful hairstyles made Jay a worthy winner.”

Do you have any tips for barbers who want to participate in the next edition?

“Prepare well and choose your model carefully. Preferably work with someone whose hair you already know well – for example, a regular customer or someone you have practised with often.

Does your model have a beard?

Make sure it is neatly trimmed in advance. That way, you can focus entirely on the hairstyle and the finish during the battle. Finally, give your model clear instructions, including how to sit during the judging. It’s the little details that can make all the difference.”

How was it to be here in Amsterdam again?

“It’s always great to be here in Amsterdam. There’s always a buzz in the air—everyone’s happy, and it’s such a lovely, peaceful place to be.”

How did you prepare for the RACE collection you showcased on the BSL stage? How long did it take to create a collection like that?

“To be honest, this particular collection has been in my head for about 20 years. Since I started, it’s held a very sentimental place in my heart. I began cutting hair in Luton, which is a very multicultural area. I started cutting hair for people of all backgrounds —black, Indian, and others with very diverse hair textures. This collection has been growing in my mind for years. Any collection can evolve like this, it’s all about the right moment.”

Tell me about your early days as a barber. Did you start in a barn, like many people do?

“I actually started in my grandmother’s garage, 20 years ago. I was 15 at the time and now I’m 35.”

Did you ever think 10 years ago that MenSpire would become as big as it is now?

“Yes. Of course. I always believed it would happen. The belief is everything. When we started

the brand, we had a clear vision: we wanted to go global.

Samuel Palmer and I were just two local guys, but we had a dream to create something big, to bring everyone along with us.

Now, we have amazing directors like Nas, Owen, and Oliver Moorehouse who’ve joined us in this vision. They’re helping to drive it forward together.

This is the dream.”

It’s fantastic to see how MenSpire has grown! What advice would you give to barbers who also want to work on stage?

“Be patient. Your time will come.

Don’t force it. Too many people want to jump straight into teaching or being on stage.

But your time will come, and when it does, it will be at the right moment. God knows best.”

If you could choose one size of cutting shear, what would it be?

“Five inches.”

Why? “Because it fits my hand perfectly, and it’s the same size as my... haha! It’s important for precision cutting.”

Have you ever cut someone’s ear?

“Of course. Sometimes on purpose... haha!”

This collection has been in my head for about 20 years Can you remember any big mistakes you made during your journey?

“The biggest mistake I made?

Probably not sticking with football. Just kidding! Honestly, I can’t think of anything big that stands out.”

That’s a really positive answer!

I think it has a lot to do with focus and concentration?

“Yeah, I’d definitely say that throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly focused. You can see that in my work, there’s a lot of passion and precision.

That only comes with practice and patience.”

What would you have been if you weren’t a barber?

“A lot of things.”

Would you have worked in an office?

“No way. Anything but that!

It would have been something creative. I can’t say exactly what, but the dream was always to be a footballer. The backup plan was to be a barber.”

Did you play at a high level?

“Not necessarily high level, but I had the intention of making it. I still play now, but who knows what I could have become, something creative for sure.

But alhamdulillah, I am who I am.”

So, football was your childhood dream, right?

“Yeah, it was every boys’ dream, wasn’t it?”

I think many guys had that dream.

What position did you play?

“I played in defense. But now, as I get older, you’ll see me up front, scoring goals! I just enjoy playing football, that’s it.”

I always see you wearing the number seven, right?

“That’s right! It’s my favorite number.”

Which football club do you support?

“Growing up, I supported Manchester United.”

Football is definitely a popular topic in barbershops.

Who’s your favorite football player of all time?

“Ronaldinho. That guy was crazy!

He had such control over the ball.

When I think about cutting hair, we need that same level of control—with our hands, scissors, clippers, combs, and all the tools.

He was a master, and that’s what we aim for in our craft.”

What do you like most about Holland?

“Amsterdam. The people are amazing—so friendly.

Really, really friendly.”

And what’s the weirdest thing about Holland?

“Maybe the Dutch clogs, the wooden shoes.”

Final question, Josh. If you had a superpower, what would it be?

“I already have a superpower.

Brother, I cut hair for a living, and I make people look and feel fantastic.

That’s my superpower!”

“A few key factors have allowed me to take my career from working in my grandmother’s garage to traveling the world, presenting on stages in over 35 countries.

The two main things that have truly enabled me to get to this point are education and exploration.

1 The first element

is education.

When we talk about education, we’re referring to the foundations —the basics, the fundamentals. These are the core principles, the ‘laws’ and dynamics of hair that you must deeply understand. It’s essential to have a solid grasp of these fundamentals, as they provide the structure that allows you to be creative and gives you the ability to understand the rules before you can break them.

2 The second element

is exploration.

This is where your imagination comes into play. It’s all about creativity and understanding the visual aspects of hair. It’s knowing that while you have these foundational skills, you can also push the boundaries and experiment.

These two factors—education and exploration—have been the driving forces behind my journey. From working in a small garage to traveling the globe, doing what I love in places I love, with people I love.”

Barbersessions Q&A @BSL with Sam Rascals daily since day one. My philosophy is: less is more. It should look natural, not overdone. And when I film content, I’m constantly tweaking — checking the hair in real life, then adjusting it to look good on camera.”

I’d already been cutting hair for six years before Geordie Shore You wrapped up the day with an epic show. How did it feel to be back on stage after a year and a half?

“A bit rusty at first, but I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I’d be. It just made me excited for the next one!”

Do you still get nervous before shows?

“Oh yeah, definitely. I’m super critical of myself. Even when people say it was great, I’m thinking about all the little things that could’ve been better. But that mindset keeps me sharp.”

Your work looks so effortless on social media. What’s your secret when it comes to styling?

“Styling is where it all began for me. When I was 14, I worked in a salon where all the drying and styling got passed down to the apprentices. So I’ve been doing it

You’ve been to the Netherlands a few times, right?

“Yeah, I think this is my fifth time.

We had some good food, did a bit of shopping, chilled out.

It’s always good vibes here.”

A lot of people know you from Geordie Shore. How did that influence your career?

“People assume I became a barber after the show, but I’d already been cutting hair for six years before I joined.

My goal going in was to promote myself as a barber. It gave me a platform so that when I opened my own shop, I already had visibility. And yeah, they loved the fact I was a barber — it added something to my character on screen.”

Did you ever watch the episodes back?

“Not all of them. I’ve seen some bits, but I couldn’t watch the whole thing. It was a bit cringe, haha. But apparently, I came off alright — better than some!”

Alright, time for some fun questions. Who was your celebrity crush growing up?

“Megan Fox in Transformers… unreal. And Mila Kunis in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Though, funny enough, I actually like blondes.”

Poor & pretty or rich & ugly?

“Rich & ugly — you can buy whatever you want!”

What would be the first thing you’d do if you woke up as a girl?

“Come on, we all know what I’d do...haha!”

Alright, last serious one. Where do you see yourself in five years?

“Hopefully not cutting as much hair — not because I don’t love it, but because I’ve built my businesses to that point. I’ll always work, though. I’m a workaholic.

But by then, I want Rascals to be a real force. Right now, I’ve got two shops in Newcastle, a studio in Manchester, and my product line is growing fast.”

How’s the brand going?

“Really well. We’ve just brought in an e-com agency, moved to a new manufacturer, upgraded our packaging… it’s evolving fast. And we’ve started running ads that are performing great.”

Can people in the Netherlands buy your products?

“Absolutely, direct-to-consumer is available now. Wholesale is coming soon once we’ve got our logistics sorted.”

In the heart of Poznań, Poland, there stands a barbershop where traditions aren’t just preserved: they’re passed down like a torch from one generation to the next. At the helm of this family enterprise is Adam Szulc, a master barber with nearly four decades of experience, whose passion for the craft has ignited a flame in his children and helped revitalize Poland’s barbering scene.

At four years old, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up at a family gathering, Adam Szulc gave an answer that would define his entire life: 62

“I want to be the guy who holds a razor and shaves men’s faces.” His grandfather, a barber during the German occupation of Poland in the 1940s, was delighted.

That moment marked the passing of a torch that has burned brightly for nearly four decades.

Today, Adam Szulc stands as one of Poland’s most respected barbers, a published author, television personality, pioneer of the straight edge movement, former hardcore punk musician, and the first European inducted into the National Barber Museum’s Hall of Fame in Ohio.

From childhood dream to master craftsman Szulc’s journey began with unwavering consistency.

“From primary school through my teenage years, I was really consistent with that goal. I knew I would become a barber,” he recalls. At fifteen, he entered vocational school, followed by advanced training to achieve master barber status.

His philosophy was never about seeking fame. This became clear at a recent business panel at Barber Connect in Birmingham, where he witnessed an 18-year-old barber asking how to achieve one million Instagram likes.

“They couldn’t answer because there’s no answer to such a ridiculous question,” Szulc observes. “When Schorem Barbers from Rotterdam achieved one million likes on Facebook, they never set out to do that. They just followed their passion.”

“I might have one million likes someday, but it doesn’t matter to me because the most important likes I get are from my clients every day, not from social media followers.”

A true family business Szulc’s commitment to family tradition runs deeper than personal philosophy: it’s woven into every aspect of his business.

He and his wife have four children, each playing a vital role in the operation. His wife provides the warmth that makes clients feel at home. “She’s not a barber, but she’s like an umbrella and a mother figure for everyone who works here,” he explains. His eldest daughter Marcelina, 26, manages the business despite never wanting to be a barber herself.

Two of his sons are licensed barbers who work in the shop, while his youngest is in seventh grade. Most remarkably, his son Nikodem, with eleven years of experience despite his young age, recently placed third in the first-ever wet shave competition in the Netherlands at BarberSociety Live. “He performed better than two very skilled master shaving barbers from the Netherlands. We’re very proud,” Szulc beams with pride.

The Polish barbering renaissance The modern barbering revival began in Poland in 2014 after

decades of decline. “From the late 80s through the entire 90s and 2000s, everything was almost destroyed when it came to barbering,” Szulc explains.

During this dark period, he was among the little keeping traditional barbering alive.

When the renaissance began, Szulc was ready. “I was on the front lines helping young people, educating them, showing them how it should look.” However, he notes concerning changes after a decade of growth.

Many new barbershops now open purely as business ventures rather than from genuine passion.

Poland’s barbering heritage runs extraordinarily deep, with guild traditions stretching back 400 to 600 years in most cities.

In Poznań, Szulc’s home city, the barber and surgeon guild celebrated its 500-year anniversary a decade ago, but the craft’s roots extend much further into Polish history.

According to Polish legend taught in every elementary school, the nation’s founding story begins with a haircut. Piast Kołodziej,

I might have one million likes someday, but it doesn’t matter to me a humble peasant, was preparing for his son’s seventh birthday celebration—a significant milestone when Polish children traditionally received their ceremonial first haircut, the cutting of their fringe. The night before the celebration, two mysterious guests visited the peasant’s house. Piast welcomed them with food and shelter, and these visitors, who turned out to be wealthy priests, participated in the ceremony and blessed the family.

This legend marks the beginning of Polish history and the Piast dynasty. “Everything started with the barbering craft,” Szulc explains with evident pride.

Punk rock meets precision Szulc’s integration of music and barbering began in his teens when he discovered that his barber school taught traditional cuts that didn’t resonate with his punk rock peer group.

“Subcultures are very important for barbering movement. They are our roots,” he explains.

constraints, music remains central to his life. He writes album reviews, composes lyrics for his daughter who released an album last year, and even provides haircuts during punk rock concerts.

The Straight Edge Philosophy Szulc’s commitment to straight edge (abstaining from alcohol, drugs, and smoking) emerged from his punk rock involvement.

As a teenager in 1980s communist Poland, where alcoholism was epidemic, straight edge offered hope and direction. “It’s kind of opposition in opposition.

So I really did like it.”

This philosophy became integral to his life path and family values.

“I show it to my kids. How to not smoke, not to do drugs, not to drink, to be themselves.” Szulc credits straight edge, along with barbering and family, with saving his life. Coming from a family with alcohol problems, he found himself seeking alternatives to

the destructive paths that many teenagers take.

“I escaped from home to search for different things,” he explains. “I never found and never chose the wrong way, like sometimes teenagers do —drugs, alcohol, things like this.

I never even tried.” Without straight edge music, barbering, and his commitment to family, he wonders what direction his life might have taken during those formative years in communist Poland.

Adam at BarberSociety Live Szulc has been a regular at BarberSociety Live for several years, drawn by what he considers the ideal format for industry professionals. “What’s great about BarberSociety Live is that it’s a small, compact event.

You have time to talk to people, to meet new people, and you have time to see what’s happening on one stage,” he explains. Unlike larger events with multiple stages and chaotic schedules, BarberSociety Live features one main stage with a clear, readable schedule that allows attendees to fully engage with presentations.

The event consistently attracts major industry names like Sid Sottung, Alan Findlay, and Donnie Hawley. Szulc particularly remembers seeing Sid Sottung’s

“You don’t have to be a punk rocker to be here. But if you are here, you will listen to punk rock music.”

While Szulc has stepped back from performing due to time 65

show three years ago and Donnie Hawley’s performance the previous year, his first time seeing the California-based barber perform live. “It’s interesting how such great names are drawn to this event,” he states.

For Szulc, participation in industry events is essential for any serious barber. When asked why he returns to BarberSociety Live, Szulc’s response was emphatic: “If you’re a barber and you’re not at BarberSociety Live, it’s weird. You’re missing out.” He believes that barbers should participate in different communication events, and views BarberSociety Live as an unmissable gathering for the international barbering community.

Adam’s book: filling a critical educational gap One of Adam’s greatest contributions to the industry came from an unexpected place: the classroom. While teaching in a vocational program called “The Barber” designed for young people, he realized something was missing. “When the barbering renaissance started in Poland in 2014, I realized that there was no book about roots, about history, about techniques, about subcultures, about products.

About nothing,” he explains.

The scope of this educational void was shocking. “In the United States, there are 25,000 books about barbering written over the last 100 years. In Europe, there are maybe 50 books, if that,” Szulc discovered. Even worse, no European barber had written for barbers in recent years.

Starting with his students’ needs, Szulc wrote three books that sold 20,000 copies combined across Poland. Soon, requests poured in from across Europe: “Hey, man, you wrote great books, but there is no book in English.”

The translation challenge was immense—technical barbering terms don’t translate easily— requiring a full year of work. When publishers rejected it, Szulc selfpublished “Barbering: A Complete Guide to Men’s Haircuts,” printing 2,000 copies with research support from the National Barber Museum Library in Ohio.

Adam explains: “We need to understand that barbering isn’t just social media content—it has deep roots. We’re sitting very deep in history because we are a very, very old historical craft.”

His book emphasizes barbering’s 5,000-year heritage while highlighting what never changes: “When you look at what happens in barbershops now, it’s still the

same. It’s a client, a chair, a mirror, and a barber behind it.

That’s it.” Despite all modern improvements, this fundamental human connection remains the heart of the craft.

From behind the chair to behind the camera Szulc’s passion for barbering has now made its way to television.

Adam is the central figure in the upcoming documentary tv series, ‘The Barber Decade’: a ten-part series tracing the barbering revival in Poland and across the globe.

“The Barber Decade” series came about when Warsaw TV director Grzegorz Czyż approached Szulc about documenting Poland’s barbering renaissance from 2014 to the present. The production required extensive filming over eighteen months, following Szulc internationally including to BarberSociety Live, Birmingham’s Barber Connect, Coretex Records in Berlin and Ohio.

The series promises ten episodes and concluded with filming featuring former Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski discussing his barbershop experiences. Despite some social media criticism for hosting a politician, Szulc viewed it

as recognition of barbering’s cultural significance.

The experience connected to his profound memory of visiting Anthony Mancinelli, the 108-year-old barber who held the Guinness record as the world’s oldest working barber. Szulc and his wife flew to the United States to visit Mancinelli’s barbershop in upstate New York, staying in constant contact with the reception to ensure the elderly barber was still alive during the risky months before their visit.

“When I was there, I realized he was a great man: a man of passion, of God, of love, of craft, of the real barbering world,” Szulc recalls. When he asked Mancinelli about being in the Guinness record book, the elderly barber showed him something more precious: a personal letter from President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, thanking him for his service to the barbering industry and for paying taxes in the United States for so many years.

“This is very important,” Mancinelli had told him. “The president of my country wrote me a letter—to a normal, typical barber, nothing special, just a barber.” For Szulc, having a former Polish president visit his small Poznań barbershop represented similar recognition of barbering’s dignity and cultural importance.

Future dreams and inspiration After nearly four decades, Szulc’s passion remains undimmed.

“I wake up at 4 AM every morning, and I can’t wait to get to my barbershop as soon as possible.”

His dreams interweave personal and professional goals, from ensuring his children’s unity after he’s gone to expanding to a larger facility that could house both barbershop and academy.

His ambitions remain both grand and grounded. He envisions additional documentary seasons, including one in the United States featuring President Trump.

If you’re a barber and you’re not at BarberSociety Live, it’s weird.

“Who better to talk about haircuts in the United States than President Trump? His haircut is absolutely amazing.” He dreams of a trilogy structure—like his three books—with the second season in America and the third in Europe and Great Britain.

His professional hopes center on preserving authentic barbering values against the trend of fame-seeking young barbers obsessed with social media metrics. “I would like that barbers be guys with great attitude, not to be only for money in it, to love clients, love people, respect what is happening in the industry,” he explains. His confidence in barbering’s future stems from historical perspective: “If we’ve survived 5,000 years and made it through two or three decades of decline, I believe we’ll continue to thrive for much longer.”

Not powered by AI When asked about artificial intelligence in barbering, Szulc shares that former President Kwaśniewski attended an AI conference where professions likely to disappear were discussed.

“You barbers are not in it,” the former president assured him.

However, Szulc personally resists AI adoption. “I wouldn’t want to write my articles with AI support. I don’t really like it —I hate it. I want to put my own words on paper.” He prefers authentic expression using Polish language, old words, and regional Poznań dialect.

A living legacy As our conversation concluded, Szulc reflected on his journey’s meaning. His gratitude extends to foundational influences: his grandfather and his first boss who advised, “Adam, believe in yourself. You don’t have to be the best. Your clients will tell you if you are the best or not.”

This philosophy guides his daily practice, evidenced by clients who’ve remained loyal for decades. “That is what I’m thinking about every day,” he says. “Will they come back or not?” The answer, for many clients spanning 20, 30, even 40 years, has consistently been yes.

“Barbering for me, connecting with my passions like music and history and with my family, is the best I can imagine in my life.

I think it saved my life.”

With nearly four decades behind the chair, Szulc shows no signs of slowing down. His barbershop continues to pulse with punk rock music, his family works alongside him, and his passion for the craft burns as bright as ever.

In a world of fleeting trends and digital fame, Adam Szulc stands as proof that skill, tradition, and genuine human connection never go out of style.

A healthy scalp is essential to healthy hair – all year round.

But in summer, your scalp needs some extra love. Heat and humidity can lead to increased oil (sebum) production, which in turn can cause buildup. And don’t forget the sun: a sunburned scalp can happen quickly and often results in dryness and flaking.

Yet many clients don’t realise just how crucial a healthy scalp is. It’s the foundation for strong, healthy hair. That’s why award-winning hairstylist Jim Shaw shares some practical summer tips below to help protect the scalp – and keep hair in top condition.

Use UV protection Encourage your clients to apply UV protection to their scalp when spending time in the sun.

Without it, the scalp can burn – which is painful and harmful to both skin and hair health.

A hat or cap is a must In addition to a UV product, a hat or cap provides excellent sun protection. This is especially important for those with shaved or thinning hair.

Exfoliate the scalp A good scalp scrub can work wonders. It deep-cleans, removes product buildup, oil and dirt, soothes and refreshes the scalp, and promotes healthy hair growth.

It’s a great habit year-round – but especially in summer, when chlorine, sand, and sweat are common culprits.

Wash hair after swimming Regular washing is essential after swimming. Salt water and chlorine can dry out the scalp, leading to itchiness or tightness. Recommend that clients wash their hair with a gentle, purifying shampoo followed by a nourishing conditioner to keep their scalp balanced and hair hydrated.

Go easy on styling products Overusing wax, gel or pomade can lead to buildup and irritation.

Suggest using styling products in moderation and opting for lighter or natural formulas, as these are less likely to aggravate the scalp.

I do think a lot of people would have a much nicer time with how their hair styles if they were to shampoo a little less through the summer.”

I’m not into making it shorter and shorter because it’s hot. I like it when the haircut has style. The best approach is if they come to the barbershop once a week or every two weeks. In the end of August, most people want to have a haircut before school—kids, and with them their fathers, uncles, grandfathers, teachers, all of them. For special events like my work at the Jarocin Festival, context matters: The most ordered haircut there is Mohawk.

So Mohawk is the answer for the summer, though this festival preference doesn’t reflect general summer trends.”

Believe it or not, here I am again with my second column in BarberSociety Magazine. For those who don’t know me: my name is Robert – better known as Bertus from Schorem Haarsnijder en Barbier in Rotterdam.

BarberSociety gave me free rein to write about whatever I damn well please, as long as it’s remotely related to our craft. So today, I want to talk to you about one of life’s two certainties: death and taxes..From the moment we’re born, we start dying – and paying taxes.

One comes too fast, the other takes too damn long...

Friday morning, April 18, I was at our physiotherapist Gerard’s, who beats us into shape once a month – which, by the way, I highly recommend to every barber and stylist who wants to add twenty (pain-free) years to their career. During that session, I got a call from my business partner Leen with the devastating news that our shop manager Miky had passed away that weekend – way, way too young.

usual clichés, I just want to say one thing: “Don’t you bloody forget to LIVE!!” Never hesitate to give the people you care about that extra hug, kiss, or smile.

Never forget how much your life touches the lives of others.

A lot of people asked us what happened. Our answer was – and still is: “Miky had a heart condition.” That’s the unvarnished truth. The condition of his heart was that it was made of pure gold – and simply too big for this world.

The week after the news, I was of course heartbroken and angry… but I also smiled. Smiled when I saw the hundreds and hundreds of comments and messages pouring in from all over the world. From his followers.

His (former) students. His friends and colleagues. And of course, his loyal clients. Once again, I realized just how much impact our craft, our work, has on the world around us.

Miky’s sudden death – and his beautiful farewell – got me thinking about a lot of things.

The ‘Barber’ Series

by José Donatz If you’ve attended BarberSociety Live before, you’ve likely seen her work – perhaps without even realizing it: the powerful, honest photography of José Donatz. She’s been our resident photographer since 2019, capturing the barbering craft like no other.

With an eye for detail, emotion, and character.

José has a special fascination for barbers. In 2018, this resulted in an impressive exhibition about Schorem, part of her ongoing ‘Barber’ series. The expo was showcased in Hilton hotels in Paris, Brussels, and Rotterdam.

Since then, the series has continued to grow, featuring images from BarberSociety Live and Vasco Haarsnijderij in Roermond, among others.

Peter was her husband, her rock and her partner for 41 years.

Every year, he drove her from the South of Holland to BSL in the Northern part so that she could devote all her energy to her intensive photography work.

Peter was a familiar face to the BSL production team – we all knew him. In early 2024, he passed away at the age of 65 from metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Together, they made one last trip, made possible by the Ambulance Wish Foundation: to Vasco Haarsnijderij in Roermond.

The result was a precious photo of Peter and Vasco together.

“Barbers with tattoos were initially far outside my comfort zone,” says José. “But since Peter passed, I have a small tattoo on my wrist, a symbol of infinite love.”

Earlier this year, her ‘Barber’ series was shown once again – this time at a cultural center in Etten-Leur. She dedicated the exhibition to Peter.

“Peter is my greatest inspiration,” José says. “He literally lifted me to a higher level. He believed in me long before I believed in myself.

He was so incredibly proud.”

Vasco also visited the exhibition: “A beautiful exhibition. What an honor to be part of it. Out of thousands of images, you chose exactly these photos. Together with Huub Stapel (a famous Dutch actor), but especially with Peter!

Not only are we proud, but you should be too. Thank you!”

From grandpa’s shaving chair to international educator Interview with Cay Kleeven From a shaving chair in the front room to a modern education centre, Cay Kleeven (52) is the third generation of a proud barbering family from Horst, the Netherlands.

Over the years, he has evolved into an educator, entrepreneur, and brand ambassador. He also served as a jury member for the BarberSociety Battles and has now even developed a Battle Education Programme.

In this interview, we look back with him at almost a century of barbering history in which he reinvented himself time and again, as well as looking ahead. “You shouldn’t be afraid of change. The craft evolves, and so do we.”

You come from a true barbering family. How did it all start?

“My grandfather, Lowie Kleeven, was the one who started it. He was born in 1918, began as an apprentice at 15, and opened his own business in Horst at age 18, in 1936. It was just a front room in the house – the way things were done back then. Shaving was the main business. My grandmother helped out: she lathered the clients, and grandpa shaved. On Sundays, the men came before and after church. It was like an assembly line, two chairs running non-stop.”

Was it a thriving business back then?

“Definitely. Wealthier clients sometimes came in twice a week – especially on Sundays – and they had their own razors, towels, and foam. The ‘ordinary man’ would come once a week. Shaving was my grandfather’s main source of income.”

What happened during the war years?

“My grandfather then went to work in Germany, as a barber.

There was still money there.

Cycling there every day. After the war, he started again in Horst, in another house, once again from a front room.”

And then suddenly the profession changed?

“That’s right. With the arrival of Gillette blades and electric razors, traditional shaving began to disappear. That was a major blow. My grandfather started cutting more hair and, to keep revenue up, began selling cigarettes and candy.

Smart business – just adapting with the times.”

When did you start cutting yourself?

“I was 14 when my dad handed me a pair of scissors and said: ‘Go ahead.’ So I just started.

My very first client? I cut his ear – full on. Luckily, he was a friend, so I was forgiven.”

How did your father Theo get into the business?

“He was the second of eight children. Four ended up becoming hairdressers. Around the 1960s, they built premises with separate men’s and ladies’ salons.

Everything neatly split. In 1978, my father started for himself, in the same place where I’m located now.”

Was barbering a natural choice for him?

“Absolutely. He started in the shop at fourteen: sweeping, cutting, logging hours. He only did men’s hair and was very entrepreneurial. He competed a lot and won several awards nationally and internationally – all done with scissors and razors.

When toupets became popular, he even competed in hairpiece competitions. That was a whole new thing at the time. He never wore one himself – but my grandfather did.”

What was it like when long hair became popular in the ‘70s?

“That was tough. They were used to cutting three clients per hour – short hair. Full house. No quality time. But with long hair, men started coming in only once every six months. Some days, my dad and grandfather had just four clients.

So they began offering hair and scalp analyses in the salon using a microscope. And added a lot of product sales: shampoos, lotions etc. That compensated for the 90

Then the hairdressing school?

“Yeah, when I was around 16, I started at the Haarstylisten College in Venlo. Back then it was school five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, and that’s where I got my hair stylist diploma.

One cool thing at the time: you could still register for national exams on your own. You just signed up for the central exam in Maarssen when you felt ready – no school involvement. That’s how I got my certifications for men’s hair assistant and qualified men’s stylist. You didn’t know anyone there – you just had to show what you could do. I also got a business diploma, which was required back then to start your own shop.”

What happened after your education?

“I started working five days a week at another salon.

On Mondays, I attended school for my ladies’ styling certification.

I had no interest in updos – I had to learn it, but I wasn’t good at it.

So I was working in the craft six days a week, plus evening training sessions. Before I was 20, I had all my certificates and a lot of experience under my belt.

But honestly, my heart was always in men’s grooming. After a year of working elsewhere, my dad said, ‘Come work here. That’s where you’ll really learn.’”

What was the shop like in the ‘90s?

“Saturdays were sacred.

Six barbers cutting non-stop.

It was intense. Fast, functional cutting – three to four clients

per hour. Over 120 clients would come through on a Saturday.

Twenty minutes per cut. And no, we didn’t sweep between clients.

No breaks – just bang on.

Weekdays were busy early mornings and late afternoons.

Between 9 and 5 it was quiet because men were at work.

Sometimes I’d read through the entire magazine stack in one day.

Hard to imagine now.”

How was the work structure different back then?

“We got two Saturdays off per year – the rest were just work.

A 40-hour workweek was standard. Things were just organized differently: if you got sick, you were out after six months – no reintegration plans. Training was on your own time. There were fewer rules, fewer obligations.

Clients still smoked in the chair.

In winter, we had a gas heater on in a smoke-filled room.”

We grew from 200 to 400 m².

We had twelve team members – all trained in-house.”

What else did you set up?

“I built an education space upstairs. Downstairs, I created a photo studio – I take all my own pictures – and in the back, a wellness/quality space for shaving and grooming. I wanted more

When did you take over the business?

“In 2000. My sister took over the ladies’ salon, I took over the men’s. My dad helped out for a bit, then focused fully on hairpieces.

He was really ahead of the curve.”

And then things picked up?

“Yeah. My sister quit in 2001, and I took over her staff. In 2003, I renovated the shop. Then again in 2006. We grew to 15 chairs. No appointments – even for coloring.

That was unique at the time.”

When did you notice the barbershop revival?

“Around 2008, the barbershop really came back into the picture.

Before that, you were just a men’s stylist. Then suddenly people started asking: ‘Are you turning into a barbershop?’ From then on, I decided: I’m going to focus entirely on gentlemen.

I renovated again, created an education space, and started a kind of franchise idea – not to grow myself, but to give young people opportunities. In 2010, I bought another property and fully renovated it.

focus on men, more quality, less production. My wife started helping out in communications, HR and marketing – it worked really well.”

Was there also a second branch?

“Yes. In 2013, I started a franchise in Venlo. That went well, but the young entrepreneur pulled out.

I was left with five staff there.

Eventually, I closed that business and focused on Horst again.”

What happened next?

“I wanted to spend less time on the shop floor. In 2015, I created Praedé Plus in my education space – a concept for older staff and focused on quality time for clients.

No crowds, no stress. It had a separate entrance and ran by appointment, while the rest of the salon remained walk-in. We had fifteen team members – and it ran like a well-oiled machine. That balance brought me peace.”

When did you fully step away from the floor?

“In 2016. I realised I was getting older and didn’t want to do it all myself anymore. Praedé Plus was going strong, and I could focus on quality. I hired a manager to run the shop, but that didn’t work out in the end. Another learning experience.”

What made you decide to let go completely?

“In 2017, I just felt: this isn’t it.

I had gone back into grind mode.

I sold the business, kept one space and started all over again on my own. I saw it as my chance to do

things differently. No clients, no staff. Back to zero. So I raised my prices and started working in 45-minute blocks, by appointment, under the name Barber Cay Kleeven.

No more mass, just quality time.

And you know what the great thing is? 80% of my clients were new, really a totally different target group.”

How’s the shop doing now?

“Clients book six to eight weeks ahead these days. My schedule is always full – but I don’t want more either. I work solo on purpose. No more staff. I don’t want to manage colleagues, no team. Just one-on-one, quality and peace of mind.”

How did you get into education?

“Keune, a hair care products company where I had been a customer for 30 years, asked me to do presentations for their men’s collection. That’s how I got into it.

But education is a profession in its own right. Showing your tricks is one thing. Teaching requires depth. Through contacts, I ended up at Pivot Point, where I also trained instructors.”

What does education mean to you?

“It’s all about customisation.

I look: where is someone, what does that person need to get better? I train teachers, students, colleagues. A good educator is not necessarily the best barber, but someone who can convey the profession well. And that is what I try to do. With passion, patience

and hands-on experience.

I still work with Pivot Point and I am an educator for Wahl Benelux.

And since 2022 also connected to Mr Finnley’s. I combine that with my own offering through Cay Kleeven Education.

It all fits together nicely.”

What do you do for Mr. Finnley’s?

“I help with product development, provide education and think about brand positioning. Mr. Finnley’s is a young, innovative men’s hair care brand that focuses on quality. For me, it is a perfect combination of practice and knowledge-sharing. Together with other educators, I set up the Barber Battle Education Programme. An intensive journey where participants worked toward personal goals like speed, precision, or performance under pressure. We focused on collaboration, inspiration, and personal style. In the end, some of them participated in the 2025 BarberSociety Battle.

Every single one of them grew.”

And meanwhile, you are also involved in the Skills competitions, right?

“Yes, they were looking for a jury member with men’s grooming experience and that’s how I got into it. First as a judge, later I was asked as competition organiser.

This is my second year doing that.”

And AI – do you use that in your work?

“Absolutely. For texts, social posts, emails. Why make things harder than they need to be? ChatGPT helps me communicate professionally.

I still rewrite it, but it saves tons of time.”

How do you see the future of the profession?

“Very positive. There’s room for everyone: low budget, high-end, everything in between. As long as you know who your target audience is and how to serve them. The craft keeps evolving.

I myself have now deliberately taken ‘barber’ out of the name.

Everyone calls themselves a barber nowadays, often after just a short course. I sometimes say: the men’s hairstylist was the general practitioner, the barber the specialist– and now it’s sometimes the other way around.

I want to be seen as an educator and grooming expert, with a focus on technique, substance, and the why behind every haircut.”

You already do so much – do you still have ambitions?

“Of course – I’d like to expand internationally with Mr. Finnley’s.

Educate abroad. Not just for the money, but for the challenge.

I want to keep building.”

What changes do you see in the industry?

“More and more self-employed barbers who want to work flexibly.

Younger entrepreneurs are opting for quality time. No Saturdays, they prefer weekdays or evenings.

The new generation is making other choices.”

Do you have a successor?

“Yes! I have two sons, aged 14 and 17. The youngest is interested, but I always say: only do it if you really like it. The eldest will start the Gilde training course ‘All-round Hairdresser’ in Venlo this year.

So Generation 4 is on its way!”

Finally, what would you like to pass on to our readers?

“Follow your own path. Choose what suits you. If you work with staff, you can grow - but it also comes with challenges.

If you prefer to work alone, that’s fine too. But whatever you do – keep developing yourself.

And never forget: joy is key.

AI is holding the mirror.

I’ve recently stepped into a brand new role, Head of Technology for the Fellowship for British Hairdressing and I’ll be honest, it’s an exciting time. My mission is to explore how Technology, and especially AI, is starting to shape our industry in real, practical ways. The question, is this technology a threat or is it the next tool in our hands?

Let’s be real, most of us didn’t become barbers because we’re obsessed with tech. We got into this because we love working with our hands, connecting with people and creating something tangible.

Computers, not exactly the dream. But here we are. AI isn’t just for Silicon Valley anymore, it’s already shaping how we work, quietly and efficiently. Often without us even realising. I’ll be honest, I was sceptical at first.

AI felt overhyped, too complex or unnecessary for the creative, human side of what we do.

But once I really started experimenting with the tools, my mindset changed. Dramatically.

Wait… We’re Already Using It Chances are, you’re using AI every day. Face ID, Instagram filters, automatic captions that’s AI. If you’re posting your freshest skin fade or beard transformation, AI is likely boosting your visibility.

The question is, are you using it intentionally or just riding the wave?

Less Stress, More Stories Content creation used to stress me out, especially editing. I once launched a podcast and gave it up after a year. Not because I didn’t love it, but because the editing drained all the joy.

Then I discovered Descript, an AI editor that turns your audio into text. You can cut out sections just by editing the transcript.

It’s like editing a Word doc.

Suddenly, all those “someday” content ideas become doable.

AI as a Creative Wingman What really surprised me was AI’s creative side. I now use it to map out shoot concepts, build mood boards, and plan my education modules. Sometimes I just want a visual sketch before I commit to the work and AI gives me that. It’s like having a creative partner that never sleeps.

Your New Digital Assistant Then there’s ChatGPT. I’ve basically turned it into a mini digital assistant. Need a new bio, it will draft one in your voice.

It gets you 80% of the way in less time than it takes to taper a hairline. I have even trained my own chatbot to understand my tone, my projects, and my audience. And the visual stuff.

You can literally upload a photo and say, “remove the background,” and it will do it instantly. Not only that, what if you wanted to airbrush an image and remove things that you didn’t want to have in shot this also can be removed instantly.

Without any software experience.

Fact..That would have taken me ages (or a pricey freelancer) a few years ago.

The Final Fade Look, none of this is about losing the craft. The hands on, human part of barbering that’s the magic. That’s not going anywhere. However, we all know time is money and time is the only resource that we cannot claim back or get a refund.

But if AI can take care of the busywork, the admin, and the editing that makes your Sunday evening disappear?

Then maybe just maybe it’s worth exploring.

Barber Joyce The Story of the Queen of Fades 102

Barber Joyce (35), aka Joyce Kruithof, quite literally built her successful barbershop in her own backyard. With guts, authenticity, and a whole lot of skill, she grew into a beloved barber with clients traveling from far beyond her village of Hoogland, the Netherlands. “It all started with a clipper and a dream.”

Joyce never followed a strict career path. She started working at a hair salon at 16, went to hairdressing school because she liked working with her hands, and fell into the trade naturally.

“The hospitality industry was not for me, I kept dropping everything. Then my mother said: ‘Try hairdressing school, at least then you’ll have something in your hands.’”

That turned out to be a golden move. “I’ve always had a creative side. And I quickly realized: I’m more into men’s hair.” While barber schools didn’t exist yet, she taught herself the ropes via YouTube. “I figured it all out myself—from shaving without an attachment to fading with comb and scissors.”

Queen of Fades At Barbier Rogier in Laren, she got the chance to prove herself.

“When they asked if I could do a razor fade, I said ‘yes’ —even though I’d never done one before,” she laughs.

“But I practiced like crazy.”

It paid off: her skills and personality stood out, and soon she was known as the ‘Queen of Fades.’ Timo, the owner of Barbier Rogier, even advertised it, printing t-shirts and flyers with that name on them.

“Sometimes people waited three hours in line for me.”

Yet in the long run, things started to fray. “I worked extremely hard and worked long hours, but I missed a good work-life balance.

Especially when I became a mother of twins - Bobbi and Jip, now almost 6 years old.”

Eventually, she decided to change course.

Backyard Business During COVID, she and her husband—handy and with a construction background—built a cutting shed in their backyard.

“A garden studio with all the bells and whistles. That became my barbershop: Barber Joyce.”

Thanks to her reputation and social media, business boomed right away. “I was fully booked in no time. I started with two days a week, then four, and now I often work 38 hours a week.”

But it wasn’t all easy. “I didn’t know a thing about bookkeeping.

Thankfully, I could lean on my mom’s accountant at first.

Entrepreneurship is great, but you really have to do everything yourself—and that can be tough.”

Her clients come from far and wide. “Some people drive an hour and a half to get a haircut at my place. That’s really special.”

And yes, her famous pet Herman - a giant African snail - is now also part of her story.

“Everyone asks about him.”

Tired of talking, not standing The barbering profession asks a lot. “Not physically, but mentally.

At the end of the day, I am mostly exhausted from talking. You are not only a barber, but also a listening ear. Customers share all sorts of things with you - it’s a kind of friendship.”

Joyce is fully committed to her clients, but that is also an immediate challenge. “I want to help everyone, but I also have to leave time for my family. Finding that right work-life balance continues to be a search.”

And yes, entrepreneurship also has its teachable moments.

“A regular customer I had been cutting for nine years once gave me a weird Google review. He gave five stars, but wrote that I ‘cut into ears and necks’. I was shocked.

When I called him, it turned out

to be meant sarcastically: he didn’t want me to get any new clients, so he could always go!

Fortunately, he adjusted it.”

Click & Clack: Her biggest blunder Joyce knows the barbershop is also a place to laugh—sometimes at yourself. “I was cutting a 12-year-old boy who said, ‘I’m going skating with ‘noren’ later.’

So I asked seriously: ‘Oh, how do you understand what they’re saying?’ He looked at me and said, ‘They just go click and clack.’”

She bursts out laughing remembering it. “I thought he meant Norwegians! Turns out he was talking about ‘noren’—a type of Dutch speed skate with long blades, designed for high-speed long-distance skating. My colleague was looking at me like: ‘you’ve got to be kidding me!’

It’s a classic I’ll never live down.”

Meet Herman - the barbershop’s quietest mascot Joyce’s barbershop has an unusual mascot: giant snail Herman. “My daughter loved snails since she was a baby,” Joyce explains. “We got one from grandma – a giant African albino snail - and named him Herman.”

Herman is now bigger than the palm of a hand and lives in a heated terrarium upstairs in the house. “He’s super easy. Lamp on it, add food, spray a bit of water and that’s it. I hardly have to clean the terrarium either because there are woodlice inside that eat the scraps.” Clients don’t always see Herman, but they never forget to ask: “How’s Herman doing?” Joyce laughs.

“He’s part of the family now.”

Golden Moment on Stage Besides cutting in her backyard shop, Joyce is becoming a regular on stage. A major highlight came unexpectedly at an hair event, when someone backed out due to stage fright. “They asked me to step in. I didn’t even know what the model wanted, so I whispered: ‘What do you want?’ He said: ‘Whatever!’ And there I was, in front of a huge crowd.”

She didn’t just cut—she shared practical tips that really stuck.

“I wanted to share more than just cutting technique,” she says.

And so she gave tips that fellow barbers could really use. “Like: don’t just put a mirror in front of your client, but also behind your workstation. That way, you can check your work at a glance while chatting—especially great for fades.” She also suggested a pro tip about disposable blades: “Keep a sealed bin next to your workstation for disposable blades.

Just like you’d expect a trash bin in a bathroom, right? It’s a small thing that makes your setup more professional.”

She continues to challenge herself. For instance, she did stage work for Wahl as ambassador for several years and competed in the Cleanest Fade category of the

“I was bloody nervous. My hands were shaking. I had put on a hat on purpose so I saw fewer people around me. But I made the top 3, even though I did everything on the spot and hadn’t prepared anything. It really gave me a boost. Next year, I’m going for first place!”

The Power of Connection What sets Joyce apart? Her honest, approachable style —and her positive vision of the trade. “I don’t believe in competition. If we help each other, the whole industry grows.

“Being open to new things.

I’m still learning every day— whether it’s techniques, products, or client interaction. I think

people come to me because I’m sincere. Maybe it’s the cut, maybe it’s the click—maybe both.”

She’s down-to-earth but ambitious. “Will I ever open a real storefront? Who knows. Maybe I’ll just stick with my cozy shed.

But giving shows, competitions, maybe one day judging? Yes, I’m definitely open to that, as long as I can express my creativity.”
