FAC T S: In the 1860s, British Surveyors gave the name London Mountain to what is now known as Whistler Mountain.

The municipality of Whistler is affectionately named after the Western Hoary Marmot, a large ground squirrel living in the local mountainous terrain. Because of its distinct shrill whistle, the local marmot came to be known as “The Whistler”, hence the town name.

The first drivable road to Whistler was built in 1964, and a trip from Vancouver took five to six hours. This two-lane gravel road was paved two years later.

In 1966 Whistler’s first ski area opened to the public with a gondola, double chairlift and T-bar.

Neighbouring Blackcomb opened independently in 1980. Today, the two mountains combined boast 8171 acres of skiable terrain and 37 lifts, with a total hourly lift capacity of 67,307 skiers per hour.

Everyone can now experience BCs most impressive mountain landscapes via the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola.

This engineering phenomenon links together Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains and breaks three world records: (1) Longest unsupported span of 3.024 kilometres/1.88 miles (2) Highest cable car above ground at 436 metres/1,427 feet above the valley floor (3) Completes the longest continuous lift system anywhere in the world.

Keeping People & Bears Safe Whistler is located in prime bear habitat, so whether you are hiking in the forest of strolling through a residential area, you may encounter a black bear. Seeing a bear can be a memorable experience, but to protect you and keep bears wild, it is important to understand how to behave around them. This requires an understanding of bears and their behaviors as well as the role people play in creating conflicts.

If you encounter a bear… be bear smart!

You can often tell if there’s a bear in the area. Bear signs include tracks, droppings (scat), or fur on tree bark. Trees may be clawed, bitten or rubbed. You may find recently overturned rocks or logs, rotted wood that has been torn apart, fresh diggings and crushed vegetation.

You can tell how a bear is feeling about your presence by reading their body language.

A relaxed bear is one that doesn’t pay much attention to you. They may not have seen you, or you may be far enough away that they do not perceive you as a threat.

What to do: Stay still and enjoy the show!

When a bear stands up on their back legs, they are likely curious and trying to identify you.

What to do: Talk quietly to let the bear know that you are not a threat and slowly move away.

Remember: Bears are wild animals and while they may tolerate the presence of humans, they should never be approached or fed.

A stressed bear may display the following behaviour: moving away, climbing a tree, salivating, yawning, skittishness or jumping at sounds or movements. A female black bear will often tree her cub(s) when she feels threatened. If you have invaded a bear’s personal space, they will huff (expel air loudly) and clack their teeth. Bears may also slap the ground, lunge toward you or make short charges.

What to do: Back away, leave the area and allow the bear their personal space.
