Ice once covered the area we now know of as the Sea to Sky corridor. Glaciers gouged out the dramatic scenery that surrounds and inspires both locals and visitors alike. As the glacial ice receded, people came and aboriginal society was based on the world around them, which consisted of salmon, cedar, and shellfish. The Squamish Nation lived alongside nature and became its steward.

In 1858 European fortune seekers swarmed into the area for the Cariboo gold rush.

They began to take over the lands for mining, timber extraction, and agriculture.

Farming and logging began to flourish and people moved to the area to work at the Woodfire Pulp Mill and the mine at Britannia Beach. In 1914 they began to lay a railroad that 42 years later would link Squamish to Vancouver. However, the most dramatic effect on Squamish history was the completion of the Seaview Highway in 1958.

It was now relatively easy to venture into the mountains, and who could resist?

Although most people were coming to earn a living or to settle, there were those also looking for adventure. Climbers laid their eyes on the high peaks of the valley and over the next 100 years attempted to summit Mount Garibaldi and the Stawamus Chief, a gigantic granite monolith that towers impressively over Squamish.

It’s now the stunning mountains, blue waters, and outdoor adventure activities that bring people to this area. As a land where the ocean meets the mountains it is worldrenowned for rock climbing, mountain biking and windsurfing. Heralded as the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada there’s a unique balance between nature, sport, art and culture. Squamish is a vibrant and exciting place just waiting to be explored.

Keeping People & Bears Safe in Squamish Squamish is located in prime black bear habitat, so whether you are hiking in the forest or strolling through a residential area, you may encounter a black bear. Seeing a bear can be a memorable experience, but to protect yourself and keep bears wild, it is important to understand how to behave around them. This requires an understanding of bears and their behavior as well as the role people play in creating conflicts.

Learn bear talk If you encounter a bear… be bear smart!

You can often tell if there’s a bear in the area. Bear signs include tracks, droppings (scat), or fur on tree bark. Trees may be clawed, bitten or rubbed. You may find recently overturned rocks or logs, rotted wood that has been torn apart, fresh diggings and crushed vegetation.

You can tell how a bear is feeling about your presence by reading their body language.

A relaxed bear is one that doesn’t pay much attention to you. They may not have seen you, or you may be far enough away that they do not perceive you as a threat.

What to do: Stay still and enjoy the show!

When a bear stands up on their back legs, they are likely curious and trying to identify you.

If a bear appears to be a threat to human safety or is destroying property, call 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).

What to do: Talk quietly to let the bear know that you are not a threat. Slowly increase your distance from the bear.

Remember: bears are wild animals and while they may tolerate the presence of humans, they should never be approached or fed.

Bears will let you know you’ve stressed or disturbed them by displaying any or all of the following behavior: moving away, climbing a tree, salivating, yawning, skittishness or jumping at sounds or movements. A female black bear will often tree her cub(s) when she feels threatened.

If you have invaded a bear’s personal space, they will huff (expel air loudly) and clack their teeth.

Bears may also slap the ground, lunge toward you or make short charges.

What to do: Back away, leave the area and allow the bear their personal space.

Bears are highly intelligent animals, sensitive to their surroundings and experiences with people.

Bear facts • All bears can be dangerous in certain situations. Be especially careful around a mother bear with cubs.

• Bears are fast runners – on the flats, uphill or downhill. They can run 15 m per second – faster than an Olympic sprinter!

• Bears are strong swimmers and good climbers.

• Bears have good eyesight, good hearing, and a keen sense of smell.

• Bears generally avoid contact with humans, but in rare cases they may approach hikers or campers, especially when they are attempting to access your food.
