Río Barbate
Este río es vital en la historia de nuestro pueblo, al haber sido testigo de la evolución de su historia pesquera como puerto natural desde la Prehistoria hasta la construcción del actual puerto de La Albufera y junto a éste, el puerto deportivo.
Nace en la Sierra del Aljibe, en Alcalá de los Gazules, recorriendo unos 80 kilómetros hasta llegar a su desembocadura, en aguas del Océano Atlántico, en la población de Barbate. En su recorrido pasa por las poblaciones de Alcalá de los Gazules, Benalup, Vejer y Barbate.
Barbate river
This river has played an important role in the history of our city, from its beginnings as a natural fishing harbour in prehistoric times to the construction of the current port of La Albufera and the marina next to it.
The river has its source in the Sierra del Aljibe, in Alcalá de los Gazules, and flows for about 80 kilometres to reach its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean, in the town of Barbate. On its way it passes through the towns of Alcalá de los Gazules, Benalup, Vejer and Barbate.

Situado en la costa atlántica, al sur de la provincia gaditana, esta población llena de luz e historia, muestra sus atractivos en todo el término municipal. Sus playas paradisíacas y el Parque Natural La Breña y Marismas del Barbate con sus pinares, acantilados y marismas, de gran belleza paisajística y riqueza ecológica, junto a sus recursos patrimoniales, lo han consolidado como Municipio Turístico de Andalucía.
Con una rica gastronomía, sin duda, el producto estrella es el atún rojo salvaje de almadraba.

Located on the Atlantic coast, in the south of the province of Cadiz, this town is full of light and history, with attractions throughout the municipality. Its paradisiacal beaches and the La Breña and Marismas del Barbate Nature Reserve, with its pine forests, cliffs and marshes, are of great natural beauty and ecological wealth, and its cultural heritage has consolidated it as a Tourist Municipality in Andalusia. With a rich gastronomy, the star product is undoubtedly the wild red tuna of Almadraba.

Atún
El atún rojo es una delicia culinaria, el auténtico rey de la gastronomía barbateña, al que se le rinde homenaje anualmente a través de la Semana Gastronómica, que incluye tanto feria como ruta por bares y restaurantes, donde probar este manjar y un sinfín de actividades. Muchas de las recetas elaboradas durante este evento se mantienen en las cartas de los establecimientos hosteleros de la localidad.
Igualmente, Barbate ofrece una ruta gastronómica en honor a la deliciosa ternera ecológica de la Sierra del Retín.
Bluefin tuna
Bluefin tuna is a culinary delicacy, the true king of Barbate’s cuisine, which is celebrated every year with the Gastronomic Week, which includes a fair and a route through bars and restaurants where you can taste this delicacy, as well as many other activities.
Many of the recipes prepared during this event can still be found on the menus of local restaurants.
Barbate also offers a gastronomic route in honour of the delicious organic veal from the Sierra del Retín.

Trafalgar
Los Caños de Meca y Zahora son dos núcleos turísticos muy conocidos en el término municipal barbateño, al atraer cada vez a más visitantes, enamorados de su bello litoral, sus paisajes, su vida nocturna y mágicos atardeceres.
Frente a sus aguas fue donde se libró la batalla naval más conocida de la historia de España, la Batalla de Trafalgar, que enfrentó a las tropas del almirante Nelson contra la flota hispano-francesa, al mando de Villeneuve.

Los Caños de Meca and Zahora are two well-known tourist resorts in the municipality of Barbate, attracting more and more visitors who love its beautiful coastline, landscapes, nightlife and magical sunsets.
The most famous naval battle in Spanish history was fought in these waters, the Battle of Trafalgar, which pitted Admiral Nelson’s forces against the Franco-Spanish fleet commanded by Villeneuve.

Convertido hoy en un importante enclave turístico, se pueden visitar los restos del Castillo de Jadraza o Palacio de las Pilas y su Iglesia, el más importante saladero que poseía la fortaleza, del que se aprovechó su estructura.

Corazón
Un lugar con esencia barbateña, cargado de amor y corazón, gracias a la labor de sus vecinos, es el Casco Antiguo. Os perderéis por sus estrechas calles, decoradas con coloridas macetas.
En la Calle Particular, una de las más atractivas,
se encuentra “la Fuente del Rincón del Beso“, escondite romántico y de lo más instagrameable. Muy cerquita encontraréis uno de los cinco bancos con forma de corazón, repartidos por lugares emblemáticos del pueblo, donde podéis haceros el típico selfie de recuerdo.
The heart
A place with the essence of Barbate, full of love and heart, thanks to the work of its neighbours, is the old quarter. You will lose yourself in its narrow streets, decorated with colourful flowerpots.
In Calle Particular, one of the most attractive streets, you will find ‘la Fuente del Rincón del Beso’, a romantic and instagrammable hideaway.
Nearby you’ll find one of the five heartshaped benches, scattered around the town’s emblematic spots, where you can take the typical selfie as a souvenir.

CORAZÓN
Ibis eremita
Una de las aves más curiosas de nuestro entorno natural es el Ibis Eremita, conocida como “el cuervo calvo”. Esta especie se caracteriza por su plumaje negro y luminoso y su largo pico.
La Sierra del Retín y San Ambrosio son el hogar de diferentes colonias de este tipo de aves.
Catalogada en peligro de extinción, para su reintroducción se ha empleado una forma singular, ya que una avioneta los ha guiado desde Austria hasta San Ambrosio.
Ibis Eremite
One of the most curious birds in our natural environment is the Ibis Eremite, also known as the ‘bald crow’. This species is characterised by its shiny black plumage and long beak. There are several colonies of this species in the Sierra del Retín and San Ambrosio.
Classified as an endangered species, they have been reintroduced in a unique way, with a light aircraft guiding them from Austria to San Ambrosio.

Una forma de conocer la historia de Barbate es pasear junto al río, del mismo nombre y en cuya desembocadura se encuentra uno de nuestros edificios más representativos.

La Antigua Lonja de Pescados, en las inmediaciones del antiguo puerto pesquero, simula la proa de un barco varado en el río y simboliza una parte importante de nuestra cultura y forma de vida.
En la actualidad, este edificio acoge actividades culturales.
One way of getting to know the history of Barbate is to walk along the river of the same name, at the mouth of which stands one of our most representative buildings.
The Antigua Lonja de Pescados (Old Fish Market), close to the old fishing port, simulates the prow of a ship stranded on the river and symbolises an important part of our culture and way of life.
Today this building is used for cultural activities.

A celebration of great tradition, the Semana Santa (Holy Week) is characterised by the devotion and passion not only of its brotherhoods and confraternities, but also of all its spectators and followers.
Our Semana Mayor offers a varied repertoire, of great artistic quality in terms of imagery (sculptors, iconography, etc.), which has made it one of the most attractive in the province.

Gracias a sus magníficas condiciones, se realizan eventos deportivos como la carrera nocturna Breña Moon, el Trafalgar Skimboard o el campeonato de surf Yerbabuena, los campeonatos de balonmano playa en la Playa del Carmen, sin olvidarnos del Sunshine Tour - Circuito Hípico del Sol en Montenmedio.

El Parque Natural La Breña y Marismas del Barbate no sólo reúne valiosos ecosistemas, sino que también alberga un rico patrimonio histórico cultural.

Litoral
El litoral barbateño alberga 25 kilómetros de playas, de arena blanca y dorada y aguas cristalinas que, unidas a la belleza de sus paisajes, atraen a numerosos visitantes. En su costa podemos descubrir playas urbanas como la playa del Carmen de Barbate o
semiurbanas como las de Zahara de los Atunes, Los Caños de Meca y Zahora. Igualmente, hay playas vírgenes como Pajares, Cañillos o Hierbabuena, donde respirar tranquilidad, o bien, pequeñas calas bajo el Acantilado del Tajo. ¡Bañarse con vistas!
The coast
Barbate’s coastline has 25 kilometres of beaches with white, golden sand and crystal-clear waters, which, together with the beauty of the landscape, attract many visitors. Along the coast you can find urban beaches such as Playa del Carmen in Barbate, or semiurban beaches such as Zahara de los Atunes, Los Caños de Meca and Zahora. There are also unspoilt beaches such as Pajares, Cañillos or Hierbabuena, where you can enjoy the peace and quiet, or small coves under the cliffs of the Tajo.

Nuestro entorno natural es un paraíso ornitológico, al encontrarse en un lugar estratégico y extraordinario para la observación de aves en sus rutas migratorias del Continente Europeo al Africano y del Mar Mediterráneo al Océano Atlántico.
Se han descrito más de 200 especies diferentes, siendo el Parque Natural La Breña y Marismas del Barbate hogar de muchas de estas especies, por lo que ha sido declarado como Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA).
The birds
Our natural environment is an ornithological paradise, in a strategic and exceptional location for observing birds on their migratory routes from Europe to Africa and from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. More than 200 different species have been described and La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Nature Reserve is home to many of them, which is why it has been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).

El Tómbolo de Trafalgar es un istmo, una doble lengua de tierra, unida al mar por una isla y formada por los vientos de levante y poniente, los predominantes en esta zona. Este espacio resalta al haber sido objeto de un hallazgo arqueológico increíble, todo un yacimiento que abarca desde la Prehistoria hasta la Edad Moderna y ligado a la historia de las almadrabas. The Tómbolo de Trafalgar is an isthmus, a double tongue of land separated from the sea by an island and formed by the easterly and westerly winds that prevail in this area.
This area is notable for having been the subject of an incredible archaeological find, a site dating from prehistoric to modern times and linked to the history of the Almadraba traps. We invite you to come and discover this historical paradise.

El núcleo urbano presenta una fisonomía bastante regular y un aspecto tranquilo y agradable, con edificios de interés como el Ayuntamiento y la Iglesia de San Paulino, en la Plaza de la Inmaculada.

El Faro de Barbate se encuentra en la plaza del mismo nombre, en la que también se ubica una veleta de bronce, monumento al atún rojo, que además de indicarnos la dirección del viento, nos identifica como población ligada a la almadraba.
The lighthouse of Barbate is located in the square of the same name, where there is also a bronze weather vane, a monument to the red tuna, which not only indicates the direction of the wind but also identifies Barbate as a town linked to tuna fishing.

Las tradiciones marineras de Barbate han sido puestas en valor con tres nuevas esculturas, “Los Atunes y Almadraba” en la rotonda de acceso al municipio, “La Mujer Estibadora” en la rotonda de la barriada del Chinar y “El Marinero Remendador”, en la entrada del puerto pesquero.
Pintado en el lateral de un edificio de la Barriada de Fátima, conocida como “Las Cunitas”, destaca un mural de grandes dimensiones, representando a la figura de un remendador.

Barbate’s maritime traditions have been highlighted by three new sculptures: ‘Los Atunes y Almadraba’, on the roundabout at the entrance to the municipality, ‘La Mujer Estibadora’, on the roundabout in the Chinar neighbourhood, and ‘El Marinero Remendador’, at the entrance to the fishing port.
On the side of a building in the Barriada de Fátima, known as ‘Las Cunitas’, there is a large mural depicting the figure of a remendador.
