TESTIMONIALS

SALVATORE FERRAGAMO IL BORRO RELAIS & CHATEAUX

The Ferragamo family has had roots in the Valdarno area since 1993, when they bought Il Borro, a village and estate that is really one of a kind. Salvatore Ferragamo is in charge of hospitality and particularly Borro wines, including Pian di Nova, Polissena and Borro, which are prized and exported throughout the world. “Surely the winemaking potential of this region, which extends from the mountains to the Arno valley, makes Valdarno special” Salvatore Ferragamo notes “It offers the optimal pedoclimatic conditions to produce multiple types of wine”. He also proves to be a connoisseur of traditional local food: “Try the San Giovanni Valdarno style stew, perhaps with a glass of Borro”. Along with his family, he truly experiences the region in all of its facets.

ANDREA BENELLI

Salvatore Ferragamo in the cellar of Il Borro

“I love riding my road bike on via dei Setteponti”. This road amongst the hills, which in ancient times was called Cassia Vetus and linked Fiesole to Arezzo, offers amazing panoramic views of the valley and leads to the discovery of artistic and cultural treasures along the way, such as the Soffena Abbey in Castelfranco, the picturesque village of Loro Ciuffenna and the bridge at Ponte a Buriano at the doors of Arezzo, where you can view the bridge painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the background of the Mona Lisa.

AGRITURISMO PETROGNANO

Winner of the gold medal in skeet shooting at the Athens Olympics in 2004, Andrea Benelli reveals his great passion for outdoor life: “I take advantage of every opportunity to be close to nature. Here near Agriturismo Petrognano, we have the great luck of having the splendid Vallombrosa Abbey that is definitely worth a visit, as well as the Vallombrosa nature reserve with the Arboreta, which are some of the most important in all of Europe”.

It is a very beautiful area for hiking or simply enjoying some time outside and perhaps an excellent lunch made with genuine products in the area’s traditional restaurants, such as the Santa Caterina. “Another area that I also like is on the other side of the Valdarno around Montozzi Castle, close to Pergine, which offers splendid panoramic views.”

PALEONTOLOGY MUSEUM - THE ORIGINS OF VALDARNO Located in a splendid fourteenth-century Franciscan convent surrounding a cloister with traces of age-old frescoes, the Montevarchi Paleontology Museum - with an annexed archeology section - was born in the early nineteenth century as part of the activities of the Valdarno Academy of Poggio. The initial group of fossils consisted of findings from the Valdarno region. In 1829, the museum was definitively opened to the general public and since then the exhibits have expanded significantly. The new exhibit, opened in late 2014, leads visitors on a journey millions of years back in time. The collection boasts unique and rare specimens: southern mammoths (Mammuthus meridionalis), the largest of which greets visitors at the bookshop, giant hyenas (Pachycrocuta brevirostris), the terrifying solitary predators similar to saber-toothed cats (Homotherium crenatidens), and the current European jaguars (Panthera toscana-gombaszoegensis). Also of note is the scientific relevance of the skull of Canis etruscus, a type of ‘wolf’ that hunted in herds in the Valdarno savannahs, the first specimen found of that species. The museum also features human beings.

Sediment found in the Campitello quarry near Bucine bears witness to the presence of hunter-gatherers over 200,000 years ago. Indeed, along with the remains of a female elephant (Palaeoloxodon antiquus) skeleton, researchers have discovered stone tools with residue of a mastic made of birch resin used to ‘glue’ the tools to their wooden handles - the oldest stone tools with handles in the world! Reservations required for guided tours; free Wi-Fi, accessible to the disabled.

At an altitude of almost 1000 meters, the forest is home to the Abbey of the same name of the Vallumbrosan monks, dating back to the eleventh century, and an arboretum featuring the most important Italian collection of plants intended for scientific and experimental use. Children will enjoy themselves playing in the large lawn in front of the Abbey. HIDDEN GEMS

MASACCIO MUSEUM AND PARISH CHURCH In the small village of Cascia, a stone's throw from Reggello, are two gems that are really not to be missed. Coming from the beautiful piazza to the Parish Church of Saint Peter in Cascia, you will notice the delicate simplicity of this "country parish church", the façade of which is decorated with small arcades and is preceded by a portico featuring four arcades with classical style columns and capitals. Inside the eleventh-century Romanesque parish church, which offers particularly good acoustics, the three naves are divided by monolithic columns except for the second-to-last bay, which has quadrangular pillars. The sober architectural complex is completed with just one large semi-circular apse. Behind the parish church is the Masaccio Museum of Sacred Art, which showcases the first work of the young Masaccio, who was born not far away in San Giovanni Valdarno, but had strong ties to the area of San Giovenale, Reggello, which is where his mother was from. The San Giovenale Triptych is a tempera and gold painting on wood, dated 23 April 1422. This inscription is important because for the first time in Europe, Masaccio used modern humanist capital letters rather than traditional Gothic letters.

Photos by Paolo Pelli

The Triptych is the first work attributed to Masaccio and the oldest example of Renaissance geometric perspective. It was re-discovered only in 1961, restored, and is now on display at the Cascia Museum. Aside from this extremely significant work, the other works, including paintings, sacred objects and refined fabrics, bear witness to this region’s rich history. The Museum is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Ticket price: € 3.00. For information and reservations: Museo Massaccio d'Arte Sacra Via Casaromolo 2 – Cascia Reggello, www.museomasaccio.it

THE MOUNTAIN HAMLETS OF LORO CIUFFENNA Where can you find the ancient, truly authentic Tuscany? Once you reach the picturesque village of Loro Ciuffenna which is part of the "Borghi più belli" Italy's most beautiful hamlets - you may come to believe that all of its marvels have been captured here. However, if you go further afield towards the top of the Pratomagno, you will find amazing little communities that seem to come from another time: Poggio di Loro, San Clemente in Valle, Chiassaia, Anciolina and then going even higher, Rocca Ricciarda or Trappola. Photos by Andrea Volante

Here you can still see evidence of times past, such as ancient ovens or public wash houses. If you have time to participate in a community celebration or taste the bread from the local baker or have lunch or dinner in one of the traditional restaurants, do not miss the opportunity! More information at the Loro Ciuffenna Tourism Office, open until September 30 every day from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., from October 1 Saturdays and Sundays 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. 10

HIDDEN GEMS

HOUSE OF FARMER LIFE The House of Farmer Life (Casa della Civiltà Contadina) in Gaville is not just an exhibition, but a center for historical documentation and cultural reflection. It is located in the town of Gaville, approximately 5 km from the small town of Figline Valdarno. The collection at the House of Farmer Life has always been housed in spaces adjacent to the thousand year old Romanesque Parish Church of Gaville. It is a complex of 14 areas created in the same space as the rectory, where until just a few decades ago wine and oil were made for farmers, as demonstrated by the classic oil press with its majestic grindstone, which still occupies the same location. As you move deeper into the house, you will enter the kitchen, where the furnishings used in homes once upon a time are on display, from the table set with a hemp tablecloth woven on a loom, to the cupboard, from the oven to the stone sink and the credenza. Continuing your exploration of this farmer’s world, you enter the grain room, where the entire process has been

re-created, from sowing the seeds to grinding the wheat. Passing through an arch, you will enter the carpenter and cartwright’s workshop with the equipment that he himself built and used for repairs as well as to construct carts, handcarts, chairs, casks, staves and barrels. This area includes a foot-powered lathe, a forge with bellows for forging iron, the foot-powered grindstone and many other pieces of equipment. In the wine cellar, a very ancient construction, you can view everything needed to make good wine, from harvest to bottling. Finally, you will arrive in the room used for resting after a difficult day of laboring in the fields. Many other spaces display memories of country life and may also be visited virtually thanks to illustrations located on the site. Opening hours are Sunday, 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. from April 1 to June 30 and September 1 to October 30. Other days by appointment only. Entry by donation for the maintenance of the collection. For information and reservations: Ass. Culturale della Civiltà Contadina di Gaville, Pieve di Gaville , Loc. Gaville - Figline Tel: (+39) 055 9501071; www.museogaville.it.

THE MYSTERIOUS WHEEL OF SAN QUIRICO Just outside the Valdarno town of Castiglion Fibocchi is the medieval parish church San Quirico in Alfano. There, a group of young archeologists found a “mysterious wheel”. It was initially thought to be the frame of an ancient rose window, but its weight and proportions ruled out this theory. And that is where the search for the meaning of this mysterious wheel began. Staff archeologists offer a free tour every Wednesday afternoon. Reservations required. 12

Meet at Piazza delle Fiere in Castiglion Fibocchi at 5:00 p.m., tour of the archeological findings lab, which includes ceramics as well as the wheel. Private transportation required to reach the archeological site. Duration approx. 1.5 hours, min. 4 participants, max. 12 participants.

For information and reservations: Ass. San Quirico Archeologia, Piazza delle Fiere, Castiglion Fibocchi Offerings available until October 2015. Tel (+39) 347 0956211 or 339 2506220; info@sanquiricoarcheologia.org
