Unexpected Changes

A

lthough it’s a possibility for everyone, few people plan in advance to be a family caregiver. They seldom know how or when a family member’s health will change and their responsibilities as a caregiver will begin.

With these unexpected changes come unexpected feelings (grief, anger, frustration, anxiety), unexpected responsibilities (providing personal care for a spouse, taking over financial decisions for a parent) and unanticipated repercussions (quitting a job to provide care, a family member moving in).

Nobody knows what lies ahead, or the challenges that may wait around the next corner.

Though unexpected changes may be outside our control, we do have power over our response to them, and how to cope effectively. Here are some suggestions to help you handle the sudden role of family caregiver: Breathe when the unpredictable happens. Relax, gain perspective and determine what needs to be done.

Prioritize by writing down what needs to be done right away and what can wait. Break down jobs into manageable pieces that can be easily addressed.

Take action by tackling the most pressing issues first; deal with your new situation in an efficient manner.

Don’t reinvent the wheel. There are lots of resources available through your support network and the community. Many people have been, or currently are, in similar situations and can offer suggestions.

Often, it’s not the change that causes difficulty; it’s the meaning or judgment we attach to it. This explains why some people sail through changes, while others struggle. Does this change mean you won’t be able to go on that vacation you’ve been planning? Does it start you thinking about your own health and who will care for you when your time comes?

Does it feel like added pressure in your already busy schedule? Acknowledging these thoughts and recognizing the feelings associated with them can help reduce their impact.

To manage unexpected changes we must put forth effort, acquire new skills, grieve what we are leaving behind, and be willing to live with some chaos and unpredictability for a while. And even though you may feel overwhelmed initially, keep in mind that you have successfully navigated a succession of changes throughout your life.

n the early ’60s, Stan Olsen was a young man unsure of his direction in life. He had grown up in California, completed high school, earned a degree in English, fulfilled his military service and was indecisive about what to do next.

His mother was working as a production secretary at Universal Studios so, for lack of anything better to do, Stan decided to give the film and TV industry a try. He took a job in the mailroom at ABC Television.

Very quickly, Stan realized he might enjoy working in television.

TV was in its infancy and there were many opportunities. It wasn’t long before he secured a job as a producer’s assistant at Universal Studios.

“It was one of those entry level jobs where you do a little bit of everything,” says Stan.

It was also a job where a bright, creative young guy could learn a lot. In due time, he became a second assistant director and was part of crews that worked on programs such as McHale’s Navy, Rawhide, Wagon Train, The Virginian, Wells Fargo and The Addams Family.

Over the years, Stan encountered such luminaries as Burt Reynolds, Ernest Borgnine, Tim Conway, Caroline Jones, Rock Hudson and Steve McQueen.

In 1963-64, Stan was assigned to work on a TV movie based on Hemingway’s The Killers starring Ronald Reagan, Lee Marvin, John Cassavetes and Angie Dickinson.

Part of his job was to accompany Lee Marvin to lunch to make sure the actor got back to the set.

“He was a great guy, but he had a pretty major alcohol problem,” he says.

Stan, a lifelong Democrat, enjoyed exchanging political reading material with Reagan. He also accompanied a distraught Angie Dickenson from location back to the studio the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

“The gossip was that she was having an affair with Kennedy,” he says.

panded, he developed an interest in directing. At that time, however, the Director’s Guild was a closed shop. Only if an individual could obtain a guarantee of a year’s worth of directorial experience, would the Guild consider an application. In a business where work is project by project, this was not an easy task. As luck would have it, an experienced director for whom Stan had worked, took a liking to the eager young man and offered him the chance to go to Mexico to work on the television series Tarzan. Stan grabbed the opportunity.

He stayed in Mexico City for five years honing his skills as a filmmaker and bearing witness to historical happenings such as the student riots and resulting massacre, which nearly caused the cancellation of the 1968 Summer Olympics.

During his time working on Tarzan, Stan gained substantial experience directing the second unit, the small film crew that generates all the “little stuff” such as chase and fight scenes that may require stunt people, but not regular actors. Working as a second unit director allowed Stan to develop skills he would later find indispensable.

After his role with Tarzan came to an end, Stan stayed in Mexico working with a film company that specialized in documentaries and commercials.

“I really liked living in Mexico,” says Stan. “I loved the culture.”

One of his productions was an art film focusing on the Formula Grand Prix races that had taken place in Mexico City. The film came to the attention of a producer at Universal Studios and Stan found himself being wooed to return to California. Not an easy decision, but in the end he returned.

In the late ’60s, the TV commercial business was just getting started and most of the people shooting commercials had very little film experience. Stan was in his element and quickly amassed an impressive body of work.

During this time he cultivated another lifelong passion – his love of Porsches.

Stan purchased his first Porsche in 1965 for the princely sum of $5,600. He has proudly owned and driven Porsches “on and off” ever since, becoming somewhat of an expert on the joys and tribulations of these fine cars.

In the early ’70s, one of Stan’s colleagues took a job with an advertising agency in Vancouver. Since there were no production companies in Vancouver at that time, Stan’s particular skills were in short supply and his colleague encouraged him to come north. Although Stan didn’t know what to expect – he’d never been to Canada – an offer of work helped him decide to give it a try.

Very quickly, Stan was busy directing Canadian TV series and shooting commercials, spending a lot of time commuting between Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles. He worked as a director on the TV series, The Swiss Family Robinson, filmed in Toronto and Jamaica. Following this, he did several seasons of Sidestreets with Donnelly Rhodes. In the ’80s, he directed and produced several episodes per season of The Beachcombers – the longest running TV series in Canadian history. He was also one of the alternating directors on Danger Bay and served as producer on the remake of Sea Hunt.

As time went by, Stan became settled in Canada. He was well established in the film and television community. He married and welcomed the birth of his daughter, Stephanie. Of his decision to Godwit remain in Canada, Stan says: “I ended up sacrificing much bigger money for a lifestyle in a far less competitive system.”

In fact, in the Canadian film industry in the ’70s and ’80s, it was possible to know everyone on a first-name basis.

Over the years, the projects that gave Stan the most satisfaction were those

that “made a difference.” A case in point was his work on the TV commercials for the NDP during the 1988 Federal Election where Ed Broadbent and his party won 44 seats – the best they’d ever done before or since. Stan is also proud of his TV campaign that helped reverse cutbacks of unionized social service positions in Alberta and another that was instrumental in stopping the introduction of Las Vegas-style dog racing into Washington State. Considering these projects, he says: “We contributed in a way that was powerful.”

In the early ’80s, Stan moved to Victoria where he has lived ever since. He shares a sunny home with the special woman in his life, Sibylle Artz, along with two dogs, two cats and an exceptionally well-maintained silver Porsche.

Although semi-retired, Stan still keeps his finger in filmmaking. He has volunteered his time to produce local film projects focused on homelessness and family self-sufficiency and is presently working with a Victoria urologist to produce patient information films.

These projects have allowed him to work with a group of keen young men who run a local multimedia company.

“They are bright young guys, on top of everything,” says Stan, smiling.

“They are just terrific.”

Clearly, he enjoys their energy and technological savvy, while relishing the opportunity to guide and mentor the next generation of filmmakers and communication specialists.

With a twinkle in his eye, Stan says: “The old dinosaur isn’t done yet.” SL

weighs her options: “Let’s see, respond to a disaster or teach a course?” The disaster hand thumps to the table. “I’m responding; the course can wait. It’s all about priorities.”

Sometimes Debra’s husband accompanies her. Mike is qualified to drive or repair just about anything – heavy equipment, trucks, you name it. He’s also qualified as a fire responder, and has his first aid. He’s an episodic volunteer, says Debra. If he’s needed in a crisis, he comes. Otherwise, he’s happy to stay home and work on the farm. “There are a lot of different areas people can help and I don’t think they realize.

Red Cross fills a lot of the gaps in a community.”

Debra and Mike exemplify the two main types of CRC volunteers (episodic and core), says Elysia Dempsey, Disaster Management Co-ordinator. Episodic volunteers are well educated in specific areas – firefighters, fundraisers, bank managers, tradespeople – and help in a crisis. Core volunteers like Debra Rees and Eileen Parker cross-train in various areas and keep the system working over the long term.

Some, like Eileen, 78, have regular shifts at CRC. She says it’s all about using her strengths in areas that suit her,

JI co-ordinates training for Emergency Social Services (ESS), providing basic needs for the first 72 hours, like food, clothing and lodging. CRC also delivers Disaster Management courses – how to provide relief and recovery support. A computer trainer in her past life, teaching for CRC was a natural fit.

keeping busy, being of service, doing for others, and knowing her contributions make a positive difference.

Eileen took early retirement from her position as manager of Woodward’s fabric department when the chain closed in 1993. But at age 63, she was simply too young to retire, so she increased her volunteer activities. She started as the ESS reception centre manager in Port Alberni, and then added Personal David Reid Disaster Assistance (PDA). That led to RCMP Crime Stoppers and media work for the Port Alberni RCMP, then Citizens on Patrol and the Chamber of Commerce. In 2001, she moved to Victoria and joined ESS/PDA in Saanich.

Just after 9/11, Eileen attended a presentation given by three Victorians who had helped in New York City.

There, she was recruited by CRC and started volunteering for the Victoria office in spring 2002. Now she’s one of the mainstays at Red Cross House, working three days a week, mostly in administrative areas.

Eileen reserves Wednesdays for MELS – the CRC Medical Equipment Loan Service that supplies free wheelchairs, walkers, bedpans and more to anyone in need.

“I said to the [tech in charge] one time, ‘Gee, Kenneth, don’t you ever stop for lunch?’ and he said, ‘I don’t have time, we don’t have enough volunteers up here’. So, now I volunteer in MELS every Wednesday morning.” MELS’s technicians and volunteers clean and repair medical equipment. “[Volunteering] keeps me young,” says Eileen. “I’ve got five daughters and they’re so damn proud of me. I owe it to myself, and I owe it to my kids, to look after myself.”

them asked her to join them on a volunteer project. “So off I went, helping with Fraser River Salmon Enhancement. I saw a salmon stuck trying to get over a big rock in the middle of the river, so I went out there to help her get over. Well, I slipped and went into the Fraser up to my armpits. That was so cold! You know how blue jeans are when they’re wet. And that salmon got up over the rock as soon as I hit the water!

When I looked up, 10 feet away was a black bear.” Eileen’s eyes twinkle. “The bear left.”

Red Cross Disaster Management protocols include Response, Relief and Recovery. Responders assess immediate survival needs, set up command centres and liaise between various government and non-government agencies to meet urgent day-to-day needs such as food, clothing, shelter and family reunification. Relief involves assisting people with their basic survival needs. Recovery helps people rebuild their lives and communities.

Eileen and Debra are ideal examples of people using their strengths to help others, says Elysia. “You can’t flourish as an individual if you can’t use your strengths. One of my favourite things is to see people in an area that they know really well and they just fly with it. That’s fantastic.”

VICTORIA’S Past REVISITED I n the middle of the 19th century, a fiery Methodist preacher named John Rattenbury captivated his congregations throughout the hills and dales of Yorkshire, England. Tall, dark and handsome this fervent evangelist with a natural gift of persuasion and a passionate sense of divine calling, set a Christian example to the community by establishing a godly home for his wife, Mary, their three sons, John, Samuel and Henry, and two daughters, Sarah and Catherine.

Samuel and Henry followed in their father’s footsteps by becoming Methodist ministers, but the first-born son, John, broke his pious father’s heart by becoming the black sheep of the family. While John espoused few of his father’s religious convictions and moral values, he did, however, inherit his father’s keen mind and striking appearance. His restless spirit took him first to New Zealand, then back to Yorkshire in 1861 at the age of 25 – perhaps a little wiser. He settled in Leeds and married a fine young lady named Mary Anne Mawson.

THE RATTENBURY SAGA:

Rattenbury, however, could not settle down and, after several failed business attempts, he followed his dream and set himself up as a professional artist, a decision that left the family in financially straitened circumstances.

Their second son, Francis Mawson Rattenbury was a chip off the old block.

Unconventional, erratic, opinionated and arrogant, he had a brilliant mind and a great deal of his father’s artistic talent. Showing no aptitude for business in Leeds, in 1885, at the age of 18, Francis was sent by his parents to Bradford, where he stayed with his bachelor uncles as an articled architectural student.

Henry Lockwood, the creative genius of the firm, had died and the Mawson brothers could not produce the outstanding work that the company was once noted for. Francis impatiently endured his seven-year tenure and, in the spring of 1892, in his 25th year, he decided his future did not lie in his Uncle Richard’s architectural firm, nor did they lie in his home and native land of England. He would seek his fortune in the colonies.

In May 1892, this ambitious young immigrant, with his shock of flaming red hair – and a flaming red temper to match – arrived in the new and rapidly growing city of Vancouver, British Columbia. He took rooms on Richards

Street and a few weeks later, he opened his office in the New Holland Block on Cordova Street. Vancouver now boasted a population of 15,000, which made it slightly larger, for the first time, than Victoria, the Provincial capital.

Rattenbury lost no time embarking on one of his favourite pastimes – selfpromotion. In a grossly inflated account of his credentials, an article appeared in a July edition of the Vancouver Daily World, giving a glowing testimonial to the young architect’s achievements, claiming collaboration with the design of structures erected before he was born.

But nobody bothered to check, and Rattenbury, sharing his grandfather’s powers of persuasion, convinced the people who mattered that in spite of his youth, he was a well-qualified and experienced architect with award-winning designs to his credit. This sat well with the readers of the Daily World and soon, so the story goes, he was asked by a certain Gustav Roedde to draw the plans for a German-style villa for the homesick bookbinder at 1415 Barclay Street. It turned out to be a Queen Anne-style cottage with a Germanesque cupola! The Roedde house, now owned by the City of Vancouver, still stands and is open to the public as a museum.

A:

First in a three-part tale of Francis Mawson Rattenbury

issue of the newspaper that contained the self-inflated version of his resumé also carried a “Notice to Architects” announcing that Theodore Davie’s Provincial Government was launching an open competition for drawings to be submitted anonymously for new and imposing Legislature Buildings in Victoria. It was to be the fourth home of the Legislature, now to replace Herman Otto Tiedemann’s “Bird Cages” that had become the object of ridicule, sparked by Amor De Cosmos in his British Colonist. There was to be no hint of the architect’s name on the submitted plans, lest there be any accusation of nepotism. However, pen names were permitted and some of the 67 contestants reflected the uninspired nature of their plans by such dull names as “Patience” and “Hopeful.” Others were flippant, one choosing the name of a popular new song, “Ta-ra-ra-boomde-ay.” However, the insistence on anonymity gave Rattenbury the chance he wanted, since judgment was to be based on merit and not reputation. He chose his pen name carefully as “B.C. Architect,” which many thought helped to swing the balance in the mind of the judges towards an evidently local man.

However, this point may not have been as significant as many have suggested, since the two judges were from Ontario

and Quebec respectively, with no interest in local politics.

On November 11, 1892, shortly after his 25th birthday, Rattenbury received the news that he had waited with bated breath – he was one of five finalists.

Now, he was required to get to work on the details – never one of his strongest points.

However, again with remarkable intuition, his detailed plans were signed, “For our Queen and Province.” He won the award. Suddenly, this unknown, inexperienced, 25-year-old immigrant, with no large building to his credit was catapulted from the bottom of the heap to the top of the pile. At the beginning of March 1893, practically no one had heard of him, but a week later, his name was on everyone’s lips as the designer of the most prestigious building in the province.

He sailed over from Vancouver in a blaze of glory and arrived as one of Victoria’s most distinguished men. After the first few days in the opulent and fashionable Driard Hotel, he found rooms on Menzies Street, a few steps from the building site, with Mrs. Howard, and her niece, Florence Nunn. As well as being the chief guest at every social function and civic event, Rattenbury was also the city’s most eligible bachelor. Any

one of a hundred young women would have jumped at the chance to marry the suave, debonair red-haired young architect, who loved being the centre of attention.

Imagine, then, society’s amazement when he announced his engagement, to the shy, homely, shrinking violet, Florence Nunn, his landlady’s niece. It seemed an odd choice since Florrie had nothing that obviously commended her.

She was short and dumpy with a large nose and protruding eyes. She disliked crowds and detested parties. Why would a man who bathed in the limelight make such a match? The mystery was to some extent solved when, seven months after their marriage, she gave birth their firstborn son, Frank.

But heartache, bitterness and public disgrace were ahead for the man who planted his image, as no one else has ever done, on the visible appearance of one of the world’s most beautiful cities – Victoria, British Columbia.

or the past 25 years, the Peninsula Singers have delighted sold-out Sidney audiences with topnotch entertainment imbued with humour, nostalgia and a broad repertoire of music from every genre, while raising thousands of dollars for local charities like the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Music Therapy Program and Habitat For Humanity Sidney Project.

Comprised of mostly seniors and led by conductor and artistic director Glenda Korella, the 63-voice chorus is a true “Show Choir,” with costumed ensemble numbers, audience singalongs and guest appearances by some of the brightest young performers on the Peninsula.

“In 2004, I went to see the Peninsula Singers and was wowed,” says Neil Turpie, who joined the chorus the following year. A onetime member of the Westminster Choral Society in England, Neil’s engineering career with Bell Canada kept him too busy to pursue his love of singing. “After I retired, I wanted to join a chorus that sang fun music with light, modern rhythms and harmonies.

memorizing each concert’s entire musical repertoire. Both retired schoolteachers, Carolle and Earl have developed many friendships with fellow members, like journalist and author Virginia Watson-Rouslin, who joined the Singers in 2005 after retiring from her publicist career in Cincinnati. “Choir has enriched my life with the joy of singing,” she says.

“Choir has given me new friendships, lots of fun, and increased energy levels,” says retired schoolteacher Lynda Spence, who joined the Singers in 2003. When Marlies Hueppe joined the choir 23 years ago after emigrating from Germany, she hoped to make new friends and improve her English. “The choir is a big part of my life,” she says.

Brought together by a shared love of music, the Peninsula Singers offer each other friendship and support during illness, bereavement and happy occasions “Choir has given me too. When long-time members Camille new friendships, lots Longden and Barry of fun, and increased Hall lost their spouses to illness, their mutual energy levels,” support and comfort –Retired teacher Lynda Spence eventually blossomed into romance. To the delight of their fellow choir members, Camille and Barry were married in October 2007.

On April 25, 26 and 27 at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, the Peninsula Singers will present “Get Happy! Featuring A Salute To Canada,” with a sea-to-sea selection of music by favourite Canadian artists like Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and Stan Rogers. The concert will spotlight award-winning pianist Matthew Poon (also the choir’s accompanist), who began playing piano at just four and half years old. Matthew will complete his UVIC degree in Piano Performance this spring.

GOOD FOR THE SOUL

H

e stoops slightly as he pours tea and sets homemade cookies on the table among a half-finished puzzle of a cat. His charm and gracious nature make George Treit a favourite here at Providence Farm in Duncan, where, at 86, he works five days a week.

“One of my friends from church volunteers here, and one day he said they needed help with the horses. Since I was born on a farm and worked with horses, he thought maybe I could do something. I volunteered here two days a week starting about six years ago, and now its seems like it’s 12 days a week,” he laughs.

George started a building program, getting all the lumber donated by local companies. He had a stroke two years ago, which left him unable to drive or handle some of the bigger machinery, but that hasn’t slowed him down.

“One of the chaps who works here… can drive anything. He’s a fine young man and he lives about six blocks from me. He rides his bike to my house and then drives us up here.”

Over the last 30 years, thousands of people have regarded Providence Farm as a haven. Located just outside Duncan, they “are a working organic farm dedicated to restoring the spirit and skills of those with physical, mental and emotional challenges. Our farm provides innovative programs in Horticultural Therapy and vocational training. We believe that caring for the land together is, by nature, healing and therapeutic.”

George agrees. “Thing about this place here, it is different, because here everybody is even. No matter what their handicap, they are even. It’s so individual, everybody is an individual,

and everybody is important. There’s a young man here who, the first time I saw him, was carrying something, then he stopped, and starting singing opera. Do that in the streets of Toronto and you’d get arrested. What’s wrong with singing?” he chuckles.

George believes he gets more out of Providence Farm than he gives.

“It’s absolutely wonderful. I’m so fortunate to be able to come out here,” he says. “I played golf when I retired 20 years ago, but I had to quit after my stroke. I didn’t get the satisfaction that I get here. When I go home, I’m tired. I feel like I’ve done something. I am not sitting around just getting old. This has been a wonderful blessing to me.”

And a blessing to others too, judging by the camaraderie among the volunteers.

Club giggle and tease George like he’s a big brother. He has a cute comment about each one and, in return, they dedicated their cookbook, Sweet Stuff to “their super volunteer and very own cookie aficionado.”

George, however, isn’t the only one sharing his precious time helping others.

“In our community,” says Executive Director of Volunteer Cowichan Georg Stratemeyer, “30,000 people volunteer in some form. Although the largest percentage is youth, seniors are the second largest group and they volunteer more time.”

Volunteer Cowichan connects hundreds of organizations with volunteers on a regular basis. They’ve recently started a new database and have 250 volunteers registered, but they are always looking for more. The newly expanded HandyDART specialty bus service, which now covers the whole Cowichan Valley, still needs more volunteer drivers.

A 2005 study by Statistics Canada estimated that the total value of volunteer work in the not-for-profit sector in Canada amounted to $14 billion, or 1.4 per cent of the gross domestic product. Another study also showed that these same people, who volunteer so much of their time and energy, live longer and happier lives.

Jim Putnam, 83, is another happy volunteer at Providence Farm. Retired for 20 years from his career as a mechanical engineer, he has lived all over the world. Together, he and George make birdhouses, soil sifters, planter boxes, beanpoles and numerous useful items for around the farm or for sale in the store.

The two make a good team, staying out of each other’s hair, but still sharing good-humoured banter. George accuses Jim of being a debutante, always late for tea and cookies and, therefore, making a grand entrance into the kitchen at teatime. Sure enough, Jim drives the point home by hammering one more nail into the half-finished planter box.

Humbly, Jim admits he has only been coming here for four years and “only” three days a week. “I needed a reason to get out of bed,” he says. “I would come here more often, but I still have to do my shopping and cleaning. This place keeps me alive, keeps me thinking. I look forward to coming every time. Last Monday, it was closed and I couldn’t come – and I missed it.”

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Jim drives from his apartment in town to work at the farm. Afterward, he drives to the Cowichan Lodge, where his wife is a resident. Stricken with Alzheimer’s, she doesn’t remember who he is anymore, but he still helps her with her lunch. Stooped from arthritis, he drinks only half his cup of tea and allows himself just one cookie.

“She’s still my wife. I still love her and I gotta get into see her as much as I can.”

So, at a time in their lives when many people would relax, these men find joy in doing more. Working with their hands and working with others gives purpose and meaning to their lives.

or over 60 years, the Victoria Operatic Society, a nonprofit organization, has produced more than 100 of the best live Broadway Musicals, Light Operas and Gilbert and Sullivan Productions using and promoting local talent. Actors, singers, dancers, directors and hundreds of behindthe-scenes workers, most of whom are volunteers and over half of whom are seniors, are the backbone of the Society.

“By the time we get to McPherson,” says Production Manager Diane Murton, “we probably have 100 to 200 people involved in a particular show.”

A former real estate agent, Diane was introduced to theatre 35 years ago when a friend took her to a VOS performance. She fell in love with it and decided to volunteer. Her first task was making coffee. Eventually, Diane moved up to other jobs and, for 10 years, volunteered as stage manager for VOS and other Victoria theatre groups, including what is now the Pacific Opera.

A current member of the Victoria Operatic Society’s Board of Directors, where she has served a third of her volunteer time, Diane says the VOS is a good organization to get involved with because of the variety of things to do, and people to meet. For her, the VOS is like a second family, and her co-volunteers even call her “Mom.” Costume Designer David Hardwick joined the VOS eight years ago, but his career as a costume designer in the United States and Canada spans more than four decades. While living in Hamilton, David created a costume for a friend in Texas who was looking to win first prize in a contest – a trip for two to Germany. The friend won, and a wealthy oil tycoon, who saw the prize-winning costume, invited David to join the Dallas Repertory Theatre Company. The two-year contract David cautiously signed stretched into 12 years, before he returned to Canada.

the title of the next production. For the upcoming revue, Hello Dolly, David made the hats and vests before the cast was even selected. For the rest of the costumes, David creates his own designs, chooses the fabric, measures the cast members and sews the costumes, a task that usually takes about four months. In addition to his costume design time with Dolly, David will participate as a dancer and a singer.

Board of Directors member and behind-the-scenes worker John Laing co-manages the VOS building at 744 Fairview with John Britt. In addition to maintaining the building, he assists with set construction, painting, running the crew and operating the fly system – lowering and raising the sets during scene changes.

A former employee of the University of Victoria Print Shop, John got involved with the Victoria Operatic Society through Diane in 1978.

“I enjoy theatre and the people here,” says John, whose interest in theatre began in high school. John’s fulfillment comes from seeing the production process – from an idea through to the final curtain call. He feels theatre is a wonderful place to bring out hidden talents. “I was nowhere near any construction stuff before I joined the theatre,” he says. “Theatre is a good way to stay physically and mentally active.”

Building co-manager, set designer and head carpenter for Hello Dolly, John Britt, says when he got a taste of theatre, he never looked back. “It’s just one incredible experience after another.” A former Planning Assistant for the Capital Regional District, whose wife introduced him to theatre and whose daughter has taken part in several performances, John says theatre can be a family affair.

on, it is his job to know the cost of the additional required material and to approach the board with justification for more funding. In addition to volunteering behind the scenes, John says the most fun he had with the VOS was tap dancing in “La Cage aux Folles,” claiming he can now dance in high heels.

“The more you get involved with us, the more you want to be with us,” says John. At first, volunteers get a taste of how the show goes on, and then they’re hooked. “There is a lot of hidden talent out there, and it does no good to hide it,” he says.

“Sometimes people don’t know their own talents until they get involved.”

ime was when three score years and 10 were considered a long lifespan and anything beyond a bonus. Back then there were no teenagers. Children finished their schooling, got a job and became adults. If a woman was not married by 30, she was an “old maid” or “on the shelf.” It was acceptable for a man to be a “confirmed bachelor,” but not for a woman to be a spinster by choice. As for same-sex relationships, they were not discussed, therefore, did not exist.

Those times seem rather quaint and amusing in the 21st century. Nevertheless, having achieved the three score and 10, it does give one pause. Is this the end of the beginning or the beginning of the end? I choose to believe the former, which leads to the question, “What next?”

I plan another beginning, richer, deeper, and more satisfying due to the life experience that has gone before. How will I achieve this new beginning and what is my aim?

First, be still; I’ll notice the small details and delights, take nothing for granted, enjoy each moment and live in the present. Next, be calm; I’ll refuse to be stressed. From now on, that word is removed from my vocabulary. If a problem or difficulty arises, I can either solve it or I can’t. So, I’ll deal with it and move on. No agonizing or doubts.

I’ll read more poetry – reading in depth, not just scanning the words. I’ll write more poetry, in whatever form fills the mind, disregarding whether it is good, bad or indifferent. I’ll enjoy the moments it works and gives pleasure to others.

I’ll make each day special with a new fresh plan: walk a different route, start a new book, plan a holiday, write a letter, cook a challenging dish, play a long game with the cats, begin a new piece of knitting, contact family, talk to a friend. I’ll fill every day with activities that can be looked back on with pleasure and satisfaction.

The downside of all this is that it makes time fly. Weeks become months and seasons change in a flash. The alternative is to slow right down and, literally, be bored to death.

Not an option in my book. Tennyson’s Ulysses said, “How dull it is to pause, to make an end, to rust unburnish’d, not to shine in use. As tho to breathe were life.” Precisely.

There is richness in life that enables us, should we choose and health permitting, to give of our best, to enjoy the best and participate to the full in the one and only chance we have.

rom the rousing musical start with Celebration Brass through the Monterey Tappers and Silver Senioritas, Juan de Fuca Cloggers and the Victoria Ballroom Dance Society, the action never stopped.

The third annual Senior Celebration Festival took place at the Pearkes Centre in Victoria on March 14. Oak Bay/Gordon Head MLA Ida Chong, Minister of Community Services and Minister Responsible for Seniors’ and Women’s Issues, welcomed guests, visitors, presenters and performers saying, “many people in the room are working harder now than when they were in the workplace.” Chong noted that March is Embrace Aging Month and that “treating aging as something to look forward to” benefits everyone.

Other official welcomes included greetings from Saanich Councillor Leif Wergeland who shared the stage with a puppet singing the well-known Beatles tune “When I’m 64.”

Wergeland said he was 67 but felt more like 47, and because today’s seniors feel 20 years younger than they are, “how fortunate we are to be seniors now.”

Further official welcomes came from Lori McLeod, Executive Director of the Elder Care Foundation, and event sponsor, organizer and publisher of Senior Living magazine, Barbara Risto. This year’s event saw over 2500 visitors who enjoyed the vibrant and energetic atmosphere that permeated the entire venue. Barbara says, “Every year, it just gets better. This

MC Pat Nichol, a regular on the pages of Senior Living magazine, made the smooth transition from guests to performances throughout the day. She spoke with audience members who hailed from far and wide, including all areas of southern Vancouver Island. Many people brought visiting friends and family with them from places like Regina, Winnipeg, Ontario and Alberta.

The lively music, energetic singing and dancing could be heard throughout the Centre, and the seats were always filled with an enthusiastic and encouraging audience. Sharing their talents on stage were Ron Bell of the Victoria Magic Circle,

the Kensington Bells, V.I. Western Square and Round Dance Association, The Evergreen Choristers, Victoria Accordion Group, Target Theatre Group and the more soothing notes of Margaret Milligan and her guitar.

Marlene Smith, helped by Rose Fletcher, had a display of vintage and antique purses. In 1978, she went out with a fellow who had a Model T Ford. Travelling in his car, she felt she needed to create a suitable heritage costume and set about finding accessories. Today, she has over 180 items in her collection – but the fellow with the Model T isn’t part of it!

There were opportunities to win prizes, enter draws, spin for gifts and enjoy free handouts of cookies, pens, notepads, flowers and dozens of other goodies. “Last year we enjoyed it so much,” said Donalda and Tony Stipkala, “but we came in the afternoon and it was really busy, so we decided to come early this year, and we’ve brought our friends from Nova Scotia with us.”

Turning heads, the elegantly dressed ladies of Victoria Heritage Productions strolled around the displays and stopped to chat with visitors, as they have each year of the Festival.

“Fifteen of us are in costume to provide atmosphere to this event,” said co-ordinator Louise Osselton.

Mind Over Meaningless Matter

hen I looked up “stuff” in the dictionary, there were no less than 29 definitions ranging from worthless things to foolish ideas. The thesaurus wasn’t much help either using synonyms such as junk, doohickey, thingamajig and whatchamacallit.

So, if stuff is referred to as worthless, and we can’t even name it properly, why do we have so much of it?

And did you know that almost 80 per cent of the stuff we own we don’t even use?

The first step of feng shui, the Chinese practice of creating harmonious surroundings, is clearing the clutter and debris in your home and in your personal life. Studies show that we spend up to 55 minutes a day looking for things we can’t find. At some point today, you probably said, “I just saw that a minute ago.” If saving time isn’t incentive enough to clean up and clear out, reducing clutter can reduce your housework by as much as 40 per cent. Now that sounds like a great deal!

So, what are you waiting for?

Whether you’re downsizing your entire life from a 3,500square-foot home to an RV or just clearing a spare room for a grandchild’s visit, these tips will help get you started.

Start small. If you have a whole house to unclutter, it can feel overwhelming. Pick one room to do at a time. If even a whole room is too daunting, pick a drawer or closet. Ask yourself these questions to help you decide what you need to purge: 1. Do I use it? Often, we have items we think are neat to have, or we kept for that one time it might come in handy. But if the answer is “no” to this question, then it needs to go.

2. When was the last time I used it? If the item has been around for more than a year without use, get rid of it.

3. Do I need it? Be ruthless here. Do you really need it, or do you just think you do?

4. Do I have more than one of these? How many potato peelers do a family need? My mom has three garlic presses in her kitchen drawer. How much garlic can she squish at any one time? Two can go.

5. Does it make me happy? Some things we “love” are OK to keep if they make us feel good or have sentimental value.

But keep those to a minimum.

Once you’ve created a pile of stuff you’re willing to part with, now what? Your options include selling, recycling or dumping.

SELL • Hold a garage sale – Encourage your neighbours to get rid of their stuff too; join forces and hold a street-wide sale.

• Become an EBay aficionado – It’s fairly simple. To start, open an account online. Take pictures of your items and post them. The buyer is responsible for paying the shipping, but you need to figure out how much that is going to be. Then pack up the item, send it off and take in the money.

• Place an Ad – For larger items, consider a classified ad in your local newspaper. Or you can run free ads in some smaller papers like the Buy and Sell.

• Post a notice – Laundromats, community bulletin boards and local libraries are a few places you can put up flyers advertising your items for sale. Remember to take down the notices after you’ve sold everything.

• Consignment shops – Look online or in the yellow pages and drop off some of your more worthy items there to sell.

RECYCLE • Ask around – Pass on reusable items to family members, neighbours or friends.

• Join Freecycle.org – This network, of over 4.5 million people worldwide, give and get stuff free. Make sure you only GIVE stuff away or it defeats the purpose. There are large networks in Victoria and Nanaimo.

• Join cvrecycle.ca – A new recycle/re-use-it site that has just popped up for residents in the Cowichan Valley.

• Donate – Local charities are always in need of items to sell. Some give discounts for their stores or even tax receipts in exchange for donations.

• Share – For bookworms, check out www.bookcrossing. com. You can pass around or order books free online. It’s a fabulous place to gift books to someone who you know will love them.

• Party – Invite a few friends, serve snacks or make it potluck. Everyone brings clothing, jewelry or other items to exchange. It’s a fun way to try on clothes you might never otherwise consider buying; you can share some social time too.

Again, just make sure you give away more than you take in.

DUMP • As a last resort, if the items are unusable or irreparable, and you can’t give them away there is no need for them to take up space in your home – throw them out.

REFUSE • Your best strategy against acquiring more stuff – ”just say no.” Ask yourself if you really need it before you buy it.

Ask yourself if you already have one that is perfectly suitable.

If you must have something, take 24 hours to think about it, then go back and buy it.

• Make yourself a rule – no bringing a new item into your home, until you give something else away.

Put all the items into bags or boxes and label them according to the categories. One more rule – once you have sorted something into the “go pile,” it cannot be unsorted. If one member of your household is more of a packrat than the other, perhaps that person gets a gifted day off while the other sorts. Then plan a little holiday with the money you’ll make from your sales.

As Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

It’s satisfying to live in a clear, uncluttered home. You’ll feel better, lighter, more organized and even have more time SL and money. So, what are you waiting for?

What should I do? –V.S. Dear V.S.: Well, although your story is amusing, I am sure your life is disturbed. You should not have to surrender your bed to the cat.

It sounds like two remedies are needed to ease this situation: communication with your wife, and firm behaviour modification with your cat. Tell your wife that you are not giving up your space in the bed to the cat. Then gently, but firmly, remove the cat out of your bedroom. Find her a warm area in another part of the house and give her a blanket to remind her of former comforts. She may cry and scratch the door when you return to bed, but don’t give in to her demands.

Communication is important, and I usually encourage it, but where cat lovers are concerned, sometimes the less said the better. Finally, it might be wise not to try to cuddle your wife until the cat has accepted its fate and stopped scratching at the door. Enjoy SL your sleep!

Family Helping Families For 15 Years!

A1 Home Care Ltd, a local familyowned business, is celebrating an important milestone - their 15th year of assisting seniors. A1 Home Care is one of the oldest home care businesses in our region. Company principal and director of operations, Lori Ann Harsent, says the family run business is holding tight to the basic principles they started with. And she should know. Lori Ann helped her mother Fran Pelton, a registered nurse, start the company in 1993. “Our aim has always been to make life easier for our clients—to allow them to enjoy their lives and remain in their homes.”

Pelton had focused her area of expertise in senior care, specializing

in palliative care. She knew that when people remained in their homes they lived healthier, and longer. Pelton also knew that providing consistency of caregivers would make a world of difference. The public health system couldn’t provide all the care most people needed – and so an idea was born.

A1 Home Care has two divisions: assisting seniors to remain independent in their own homes, and providing on-call nursing staff to senior’s communities in Victoria. The ‘homecare’ service means something different to each client: light housekeeping, meal preparation, assistance with bathing, personal care, and companionship.

“Having nurses available to complement the home support side of the operation has made a real difference in the level of care we’ve been able to provide.” says Lori Ann. “Our clients tell us over and over that they appreciate our efforts to match the caregiver to the client and maintain consistency. Avoiding that revolving door of caregivers is so important to them… and to me. That and being accessible.”

By 2004, with Fran still working full time as a geriatric nurse, the company had grown to the point where it needed some systems in place to allow it to better serve clients. “That’s where Lori Ann really stepped up.” says Fran. “She knew a1 inside and out. She would often take care of all operations while I was away.

She had worked as a branch administrator in the financial services industry and in HR and Finance in the tech sector. And

she had run a group home for mentally challenged residents.”

Lori Ann agrees. ”I really enjoyed helping our residents live life.”

In 2005 Lori Ann and her husband took over day-to-day business operations, allowing Lori Ann’s folks to travel and send postcards from far away. Dan took his experience as a marketing rep and spearheaded the image updating of A1.

The most noticeable of those changes was a new logo.

To mark their 15th year they are implementing a name change. “We don’t look after homes, we look after people— wherever they are. We’ve changed our name to a1 People Care Ltd. Our goal has always been to make life easier for our clients,” says Dan. “We’re using that as our mission statement,” adds Lori Ann. “That’s why I went for my “Certified Senior Advisor” designation.”

CSAs undergo in-depth study of all areas of interest and concern to seniors. They must undertake continuing education to maintain their designation. “We’re a small but growing group. It’s a designation we’ll see more of as the population ages, and professionals seek to better serve seniors.

Accepting assistance is sometimes a big step. What I’ve learned from the CSA course has helped me to appreciate that on a whole different level so that we can make it an easier transition” And after all, that’s what a1 People Care is all about—“Making life easier for you.”

Anything can catch your foot. Another advantage of using a cane is that you look where you are going to put that cane.”

Another valuable tool available to the visually impaired is the Taxi Saver Coupon, an initiative by BC Transit. Every month, users can buy $40 worth of coupons that give them $80 in value; accepted by nearly every cab company in the city. “It feels so good to have them in my wallet,” says Ruth.

“It is like a freedom.” In order to take advantage of this service, users need validation from their eye specialist.

Another valuable service is the monthly delivery of prescription drugs and vitamins prepackaged into individual doses, so patients never have to worry about taking the wrong dosage.

Personally, Ruth’s friends are supportive. “Sometimes to the point where I have to say, ‘No, I can do that for my-

t is a good excuse to kiss men on the cheek; I just tell them I don’t see too well.”

Ruth Scott is active on her church’s hospitality committee but thinks she might quit welcoming the congregation because her vision has deteriorated. The rest of the committee and members of her church won’t let her. They know the value of her wide warm smile and the twinkle in her eye when she greets the congregation on Sunday mornings. “She just makes us all feel so comfortable.”

Ruth is one of the millions of people affected with AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration). It has changed her life, but the changes haven’t all been dreadful. Ruth loves to tackle new projects and ideas with a zest for life that makes people happy to be around her.

She lovingly talks about her support systems, both organizational and personal. Ruth has found the CNIB to be extremely helpful. They have an onsite nurse who offers a consultation and shows patients a sample of equipment they can acquire. They no longer have a store in Victoria, but all products can be ordered from Toronto.

“I’m not blind, but the nurse offered to give me a white cane,” says Ruth.

“When I asked when I would use it,” the nurse replied, ‘You use it especially

Recently, at the bowling alley (she bowled 270 that night), Ruth overheard one of the members of her group talking about a study group that everyone was excited about. Ruth mentioned that even though she’d love to join, she was unable to read the material, so would have to pass it up. At church the next morning, a member of the group handed Ruth the first four chapters on tape so she could listen and catch up by the Tuesday night session. She has been an avid member ever since.

Ruth continues to live in her home, shared with her daughter and family – she lives up, they live down. This way, they connect regularly. “One thing that makes our arrangement work is that we respect each other’s privacy. I’m blessed that I have my family here, children and grandchildren, close, both physically and close to my heart.”

Three years ago, Ruth made the decision to stop driving at night; 18 months ago, she gave up driving altogether. It was a difficult choice because it meant the loss of independence, but it had to be done, both for

Ruth’s safety and the safety of others on the road.

One of the positives of Ruth’s diminishing sight, she says, is talking books. “I never used to be a reader, but now I have read more books with my ears than with my eyes. It’s a wonderful service provided by volunteers.”

Understandably, she finds paperwork annoying.

“Looking after my personal business with letters that come with regular type font is difficult. If I am having a good day, while using a hand magnifier, I can read the envelopes. None of the tools I use to make my life easier are inexpensive. But I am fortunate to be able to have access to them. One of the simple tools from CNIB useful for writing letters is a dark lined paper that I put behind the page I am writing on. It keeps me between the lines. The other tool that has been invaluable is a computer program called Zoom Text. It enables me to use my computer constantly.”

One of her biggest frustrations is the inability of simply going for a walk outside. Ruth talks about a recent incident where she had her daughter drop her off at the doctors and agreed to meet her later at a coffee shop across the street.

“In order for me to get to the coffee shop, I had to cross the road,” she says. “I couldn’t see when the sign came up as to when it was safe to cross in the crosswalk. I finally had to go back and ask for help. In spite of the fact that I shouldn’t, sometimes I feel so stupid. I forget that all I have to do is ask for help. But when I panic, my brain shuts down. “I’m going to keep on doing as much as I can that I enjoy. I still travel, but only when there is love at both ends.” She’ll journey to Manitoba in May for her grandson’s graduation.

Volunteering makes the difference

heilla Oates began volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society in 2002 after she saw the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock fundraise $60,000 for childhood cancer research in a community with a population of only 7,000 people. Since then, she has never regretted donating her time to the cancer cause, and wants to see more people volunteer. A cancer survivor, herself, Sheilla jumped at the chance of getting together with people who shared similar experiences.

Her first volunteer role was selling daffodils. And because she wasn’t afraid to approach the public, Sheilla was very successful. Other projects she’s taken on for the Canadian Cancer Society include planning fundraising events, like fashion shows and bedand-breakfast tours.

hen I was five years old, my sanctuary or “hideout” was a big branch on the giant cherry tree that grew beside our house on Western Avenue in North Va n c o u v e r.

That tree branch was where I went to think and be alone. It was close enough to the ground to climb but high enough to be hidden from the world.

Several years ago, in a writing workshop, we were asked to write about Sanctuary. Within a short time, my cherry tree popped into my mind. I don’t remember a great deal about my

childhood, except for that vivid cherry tree. In my memory, it is always spring and my tree is full of leaves. So, as we move fully into spring, I want to share with you, 60 years later, the vision of what my sanctuary looks like today.

Today, my sanctuary is an open white building, similar to a small ancient Grecian temple, in a place where the sun always shines; the temperature is always moderate; the grass is always green, and never has to be mowed.

Interestingly, the cherry tree from my childhood is just to the right of the white shell path that leads to my sanctuary. I go there when I need to connect with the wise woman within me, when I need answers to life’s burning questions or when I need to feel peace.

My sanctuary is the place for me to allow myself to believe that I am and will be all that I am meant to be in this lifetime. My sanctuary is a place of safety, but also of beauty, serenity and an opportunity to grow in wisdom.

sanctuary – whether we are five or 65. We all need a private place where we can be alone, separate from others.

In earlier times, the term sanctuary meant a place of safety from oppression. One could not be harmed when claiming sanctuary. It may not be as necessary to claim sanctuary today, but it is still important to have a place of sanctuary. Sometimes we have to create a safe place inside our head and heart that is different, separate from the rest of our thoughts.

So, whether it’s a bench in a quiet corner of a garden you can visit physically or an imaginary place you visit in your mind, be sure you have a sanctuary.

ADD EVEREST BASE CAMP TO YOUR “LIST”

T

his is not about climbing Mount Everest. It is about taking a three-week hike in October and early November in the high altitude of Nepal that has mountains in your face – up close and personal. I ascended solo with a porter from nearby Lukla and celebrated my

40

58th birthday in Namche Bazaar. Here, my porter, a teacher on holiday, turned sick, so I hired Dolma, a younger porter, and off we trekked to pick up his clothing in Thames.

Dolma spoke Nepalese only, so each night in the teahouses, I chatted with fellow travellers. I met the most

adventurous seniors, uncommon men and women from around the world who were fulfilling their long-time ambition to hike in “the roof of the world.”

Steve, a 61-year-old U.S. citizen from Bangkok, and Gokul, his porter, were following our route. Each day, I played Scrabble with Steve and learned about his writing and travels.

When we reached Everest Base Camp, a Thai expedition was camped there.

A well-known author in Thailand who spoke fluent Thai, Steve was invited to dinner and to call his wife in Bangkok, who had encouraged him to take this trip of his dreams.

People have this destination on their “list” for good reason. When it comes to spectacular, breathtaking mountain panoramas, the Everest Trek is without equal. The walk to Everest Base Camp

from Lukla takes you through lush valleys with abundant flora and fauna, past friendly Sherpa villages and Buddhist monasteries, and far above the treeline as high as 5,545 metres towards the earth’s highest mountains. Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse and Mount Everest tower above.

We would only cross Cho La Pass from Gokyo if the weather was co-operative, and it was. Teahouses were few and far between, so it required a 12-hour hike from Dragnag to Dzongha; but coming from British Columbia, I was prepared for hiking in these mountains. Due to overflow, I shared a tent in Dzongha with a young woman from Belgium travelling in the opposite direction; we still e-mail

each other. The next night, we reached Gorak Shep (5,140 m) – the highest I have ever slept. I melted the bottom of one of my down booties on the dung-fuelled heater trying to get warm. The smell of the rubber mixed with the dung fuel and the smoke from the stove made everyone turn in early that night. The porters, however, had to sleep in that malodorous room. In bed that night, I was embarrassed, and shivered in two sleeping bags. I woke next morning with the water in my water bottle frozen by my side. Regardless, the place was magical and worth the cold and effort.

make it happen. The high-end option for the person with too much money and no time to spare would be a helicopter that flies from Lukla or Namche Bazaar to Base Camp. While it offers amazing aerial scenery at $2,000 an hour, this option doesn’t allow time to sightsee, acclimatize to the altitude or meet the Sherpa people.

The next level down includes packaged tours ranging in cost depending on Western comforts like international food, hot tea served to your sleeping bag, and your own tent. The more expensive treks will have you hike up and helicopter down.

If you are not someone who joins package tours, the trek is easily done on your own or with a friend, hiring a porter to carry your bag and negotiate the teahouses. You don’t have to make arrangements before you go to Kathmandu, but you can through the Internet. For three weeks, all the food and accommodation cost me half of the helicopter ride, but I was roughing it.

It’s a trip I will never forget – thrilling, difficult, and breathtaking. The mountains are higher than the clouds, and the experience of a culture without cars and Western luxuries a treat. If you accept this mission, I promise you will be pushed to the limit, create lifelong friends, and help the local economy.

Don’t fear the Maoists; I did have to donate money to their cause, but they operated with restraint.

I could say more about the markets, Hindu and Buddhist festivals, Yeti Airlines, bucket hot showers, and the top of the world, but it’s better experienced firsthand. You’ll get fit and enjoy Tengpoche monastery, mountain vistas day and night, yak burgers and chips, and best of all the Nepalese people – who gave me a

NOBODY’S SON I

t’s intriguing to speculate why Frank Keeling’s autobiographical book Nobody’s Son is about a boy named Jack Bunton. It’s his life story, so is it truth or fiction? Perhaps the old adage about truth being stranger than fiction is the answer because Frank’s book contains a dreadful family secret – the repercussions of which rebounded throughout his life.

Back when the now 88-year-old Victoria resident was a lad, he spent his idyllic early years in the small country town of Ongar, Essex in the embrace of a homely, loving family. Imagine the wrench when the unsuspecting five year old was suddenly taken to a family of strangers and raised by them

With the then provincial government of the day, Frank worked for three years on a seven-volume report on “Health Security for British Columbians” and he moved to Vancouver Island to facilitate this work. He later travelled to various provinces sharing information. Another couple of years of work in Saskatchewan and Frank decided in 1980 to retire.

The resilience Frank acquired in his childhood was with him every step of the way, and he called on it often. While successfully productive, his work and ensuing years were not without challenges. In 1998, Frank lost his beloved Joy to cancer and of himself he says, “I’ve had three separate cancers – bladder in 1970, lung in 1988, colon in 1993 – and if that wasn’t enough, open heart surgery in 2001.”

Frank’s first edition of Nobody’s Son was released in 2000 and the second in October 2005. “Writing the book was not only a wonderful gift for my family, it was extremely therapeutic for me,” he says. “I had lived with a dreadful family secret, shared only with my second wife of 53 years.”

These days, Frank is out and about on his scooter, continues ongoing work with screenwriters, discussions with screen and stage producers and energetically engages in plans to get his book launched. His secret has been well and SL truly let out of the bag.

As luck would have it, Joy’s sister had moved to Saskatchewan and the positive reports of her successful move were what encouraged Frank and his family to take the leap with their two boys and 11-month-old daughter. It was March and 30 below when they arrived. Undaunted, Frank set off to secure employment and did everything “from real estate to insurance to working for a janitorial company, and more,” until eventually he was hired by the Public Service Commission to work on Medicare. Later, he worked for Saskatchewan Power Corporation.

The family thrived, and Frank was tempted to move to British Columbia when his two boys relocated there. He knew it was a beautiful place, and so, he says, “I gave up a good career and a beautiful home, but we’d decided the winters were too much.” Settling on the Lower Mainland, Frank set up his own business assisting companies and organizations to reorganize their administrations as they brought in computerization. “It was an amazing success from the word

Reflections

R

ecently, my wife and I contemplated purchasing half a car. At least that’s what they look like to me! Like some giant cutter came down and neatly sliced off the back seat and the trunk. I guess you may have seen them around, these half cars.

When I think back to my old ’51 Pontiac with the shiny hubs and the skirts, I really find it hard to justify half of a car with four wheels. What’s happening to us?

I realize the price of gasoline is high, but not so high that we need to forfeit our dignity! I can’t imagine in the ’50s – being Brylcreem-ready with my ducktail haircut, pegged pants and leather jacket – pulling up to my girl’s house in one of these half cars and honking the horn. (Actually, I’m not sure if there’s room for a horn.)

She would have shot me and told me to crawl four blocks away before dying.

And to take the half car with me! Not too cool!

These half cars are not much larger than my scooter. They actually remind me of a scooter with a roof. I don’t think I could get away with driving one of them through Costco, though.

If these are the cars of the future and they end up replacing the cars we know today and have known in the past, then I don’t think I’ll watch the Indy 500 anymore.

I’m still trying to understand how and if a family of four could go on vacation or weekend camping in one of them. I’d really like to see that!

I was trying to imagine if that was the only kind of car in the Roaring Twenties. What would it have been like? With Al Capone’s boys trying to shoot their machine guns out the window. They’d have to shoot fast, I guess, before some big guy came out and stomped on them.

They’d never work as taxis – these half cars, I mean. If you called for one, you’d have to leave your luggage and wife behind. Many guys wouldn’t want to leave their luggage behind.

Some guys have what is called by our youth “hot” cars. They strut a bit, these macho men, rev their motors, and exercise their tattoos. Quite impressive! At least that’s what they tell me.

They should know! The girls flip their ponytails, giggle, flutter their eyes and come like bees to honey (they also tell me that too).

A HALF CAR

I can’t imagine the same reaction with these half cars. Instead of “hot,” the girls might say to these wrestlertypes, who even have muscles in their lips, that their cars are “cute.” The tattoo parlours would have to hire extra help; tattoos distance anyone from “cute.”

But what do I know? I’m a 25-yearold in an over-70-year-old body who is trying to keep up with the times.

One of these half cars could be a bonus in the long line-ups and ferry waits at Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen. We could play catch with it!

I used to like a souped up car when I was young and wanted to impress the girls. Now that I’m older, I prefer comfort over speed. That’s me: comfortable, but not too fast; vibrant, but only when sitting down. My wife just snorted and left the room. What does she know? I’m just waiting for the right time to spring my vibrancy on her. She’ll be so impressed when I walk to the end of our driveway without my scooter.

But these half cars scare me. They give a whole new meaning to “have you hugged your car lately?” I don’t know what they are called or how much they cost. If they’re inexpensive, maybe we can buy one for each foot. They’re not much bigger than a pair of roller skates anyway. And who knows? With all the ingenuity of today, we probably won’t even have to lace them up.
