Difference between Bars and Pubs

Difference between Bars and Pubs Bars, pubs, taverns, inns, alehouse and bars by many other names are places where you can go to have a drink. In some of them, you can have some snacks, full meals or even catch some sleep. If you want to know what makes them different from each other, we are going to give you a very quick run down.

Bars Bars are just that a BAR, this is a place where you get drinks served to you by a bartender. The reason why they are called bars is because they have a bar.

Pretty much any establishment with a bar you can walk up to can be called a bar. In the USA you find most restaurants have bars as well, this is great if you have to wait for a table. So when they name the restaurant they normally add bar as well, so people know they can just go have a drink at the bar. So Now the word Bar is just a general term for a place to get a drink.

Pubs - Public House Pubs or Public House are generally places where you can go after having a tough day at work, to relax, let it all go, have some drinks and maybe some dinner while listening to music. But the history of the Pub stems back to the 5th century where Alehouses would put a green bush out the front when their brew was ready for people the taste.

These became meeting places where town folk would meet and gossip and discuss.

Pubs spreed across England, Ireland, and other countries.

Also, there’s another difference in the allowance of customers; kids are normally not allowed in bars, but you can go having a family dinner at a pub.

Inn's and Taverns Inns and Taverns are pretty much just Pubs with Accommodation, Inn’s where for travelers who where seeking lodging. These inns where normally in country towns or on highways. You will normally find old inns are very large and grander buildings as they where built for lodging.

Pubs where alehouse, when they where built they where not designed around lodging.

Beer houses The English Beer house came about after a end to the Gin Craze when they introduced the Beer Act of 1830 to stem the drunkenness of the cheaper Gin. A Beer house was where you got a license from the government so you could sell beer in your house you could even brew it your self to sell it. This took off within 8 years over 45000 had been built. The rule was that you could not sell spirits or Fortified wine.

Hence the name Beer House.

Lounges and Saloons It is funny because the modern lounges are normal chill and relaxed places but the history of the lounge runs back to the saloons that provided entertainment for there guests. This back in the day was more sinister then today’s karaoke. They had cabaret and strip shows.

The modern day lounges more resemble an old days snug a more classy venue for more upper class patrons.

Last but not least the Public bar The modern day public bar a Dive Bar. Public bars where dirt plan places to drink they didn’t have all the bells and whistles. The original ones had unfinished floors with saw dust to soak up the spit and spill from the night.

There where for the working class and that’s it.
