After careful consideration, the decision was made to cancel all Oklahoma Baptists sponsored events of 50 people or more in the months of January and February of 2021. In the final week of 2020, WatersEdge staff members poured their energy into finalizing one of the organization’s most anticipated projects of the year: the Endowment Distribution. Their efforts resulted in more than $8.5 million being sent out to support ministries in Oklahoma and across the United States. Combined with smaller quarterly endowment distributions made throughout the year, WatersEdge distributed a total of $13.7 million in endowed funds in 2020, surpassing 2019’s distribution by $1.3 million.

The funds were sent to 353 unique beneficiaries, the vast majority of which are Southern Baptist ministries that focus on changing lives with the Gospel.

They include churches, seminaries, Christian universities, children’s homes, missions organizations and more. But none of this would be possible without the generosity of ministry-minded givers.

Despite COVID-related economic turmoil, these endowments continue to distribute faithfully, thanks to the donors who created and support them. Many ministries rely on endowments to sustain fundraising efforts or to weather temporary dips in annual charitable giving. Anyone—not just the original giver—can contribute to an existing endowment, further growing the principal andV ultimateOICES ly increasing its distribution. An endowment also offers donors flexibility since they can be funded with cash, stocks and bonds, real estate and privately-held investments.

Here’s an example of how endowment works: Jim Smith places $50,000 into an endowment for his church and names it after his grandmother: “The Loretta Smith Legacy Fund.”

In its first year, the endowed gift would distribute $2,250 to Jim’s church. While that amount may seem small

The year 2021 would be a great opportunity to begin tithing.

This might seem odd to emphasize in the midst of a pandemic that has brought a great deal of uncertainty and insecurity to our lives. Let me tell you why I think tithing would help bring order and perspective to this very chaotic season of your life.

Tithing is giving 10 percent of your income to the Lord through your local church. It is best to view the tithe as not so much a law to obey as a spiritual discipline to embrace. The practice of tithing, week by week, month by month, year by year, creates a rhythm of reminder that helps form us as the people of God. Tithing helps me remember.

I am a child of the Father. My heavenly Father cares for me. He provides for all my needs, and I trust

Him. Giving 10 percent is an act of faith. We don’t tithe because we have some left over; we give what we could use. The tithe is a spiritual discipline that helps me live in humble, joyful dependence on my Father. Remember, Jesus said, “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matt. 6:31-33). If you don’t truly believe that God Almighty is your Father who provides, you will have a hard time tithing.

I am a member of the Body. Paul describes giving money as fellowship, a sharing. Tithing will tie your heart to the local church. Our day is marked by church attenders, church shoppers and church consumers who try to use what the church offers for their own benefit. The problem is, church doesn’t work that way. If you want your church to pay real dividends in your life, you must invest in it. If you are just “attending” a church, there will never be much of a tie that binds. But to actually give 10 percent of your money to that church—wow! You are

all in! Ask our Lord to give you such love, passion and devotion for your church that tithing is a great joy. Remember, your heart follows your treasure.

I am a manager for the Master. Tithing brings discipline to our financial lives. Giving 10 percent forces us to be mindful of how we are spending the other 90 percent. The 10 percent is a regular reminder that it all belongs to the Master. We are stewards of His resources. J. Oswald Sanders said, “The question is never how much of my money should I give to God, but how much of God’s money should I keep for myself.” So, tithing is a starting place for biblical stewardship.

Tithing is not a fundraising scheme; it is a disciple-making tool. Like prayer, corporate worship and Bible reading—the spiritual discipline of tithing brings a rhythm that reminds us to live as children of the Father, members of the body and managers for the Master.

How our Lord would be pleased and glorified, how you and your family would be blessed if you would embrace the spiritual discipline of the tithe in 2021. “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”

As 2021 arrived, rejoicing around the world could be heard. With 2020 in the rearview mirror, many anticipated that our long national nightmare is finally over.

Whereas 2020 was a year which saw an unusual amount of suffering, disease and loss, this year certainly is likely to be better in many ways. At the same time, Christians know that life is always full of trouble, no matter what the calendar says.

But, more than that, we know there is always hope. Jesus said, “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the

world” (John 16:33). Another Bible translation puts it this way: “take heart, I have overcome the world.”

Whether 2021 ends up being the best year, an average year or one that again is full of great personal and societal struggles, we can take heart because of Jesus.

Sadly, though, there are many people right now who are not taking heart; they are currently losing heart. We hear about it among health care workers, essential personnel, even people in ministry.

These dear people are growing discouraged and simply giving up. Giving up on life; giving up on people around them; perhaps even sometimes giving up on God’s call for their lives.

In his brilliant work, “The Screwtape Letters,” C.S. Lewis has wisdom for this situation. In that fictional work, Lewis depicts a man who is being tempted and tried by demons, “Screwtape” and “Wormwood.” Through what Lewis called “teaching in reverse,” we see into the mind of the enemy and how he and his minions work against Christians.

One week, he tempts the man to skip church and

disassociate from believers as a ploy to weaken the man in his walk with God. In another episode, he tempts the man toward sexual sin. Another time, the demon tries to get the man to buy into the idea of “tomorrow” (I can always get to that Bible reading or prayer or good work “tomorrow,” not now, when “eternity touches the present”).

Finally, we find out from “Screwtape” that where the devil gets his biggest laugh and thrill is when Christians give up just before the moment God was sending relief. The demon says, had the man only known it, God was sending help just on the other side of the hill of adversity he was climbing.

None of us knows how 2021 will end up, for any of us individually or as a nation. Yet during these times, which try the souls of men, Christians have an opportunity to advance the Gospel through the ministry of encouragement.

Brothers and sisters, take heart! Jesus has overcome! Spread that message of hope, and then we will see what a truly happy New Year can be like.

Four-year-old Cohen the Goodhearted was sitting on the floor, his face buried deep in his hands as he sobbed. Cohen is exceptionally talented at faking being upset and will probably win an Oscar for this talent, but this was that.

Cohen tried to catch his breath through his tears and slobber. “I can’t remember!”

“What can’t you remember?”

More sobbing. “I CAN’T REMEMBER!” Dad, still confused, asked again: “Cohen, what can’t you remember?”

“Why do you think you lost your memory?”

“I can’t remember when I was born, and I can’t remember when my big brother was born,” he sobbed.

His dad finally put the puzzle pieces together. Cohen could remember his younger brother being born, but when it came to his and his older brother’s births, he drew a blank and thought he had lost his memory.

I wish I had been there that day; I would have sidled up beside him and started crying too. “Poppy, what’s the matter?” he might have asked.

“I can’t remember!”

“Can’t remember what, Poppy?”

“Just name it, and I can’t remember it.”

I can’t remember the gazillion passwords to my online accounts. I can’t remember my grandsons’ names. Many times, I have called them by a brother’s name. But wait a minute; I did that with my sons too. This memory loss must go a long way back.

I can’t remember where I put my glasses, and I spend 20 minutes looking for them before I discover I am wearing them. And I don’t remember my birth either! So I guess there are two Moore boys suffering from memory loss.

Cohen, I need to tell you that Grammy’s mind is as sharp as the day I married her. She has not forgotten anything in the 46 years we have been married. I won’t dwell on Grammy’s incredible recall because one of us will get in trouble. Cohen, my friend, I feel your pain.

Memory is important. When we buy a phone or computer, we want to know how much memory it contains. Some of you might not know this, but the oldest computer can be traced back to Adam and Eve. It was an apple with extremely limited memory: one byte and everything crashed.

God knew His children would have short memories; we see this from the very beginning. That is why the Bible instructs us not to forget. As we begin a new year, let me suggest three things we need to remember: 1. Remember His Word: “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Ps. 119:11).

Start out this year by memorizing some new Scriptures. Repeat each verse, write it out and post it on your refrigerator. Share it with others until it is buried deep into your subconscious. Ask God to give you an opportunity to speak that Scripture into someone’s life. When you do, it will speak back to you.

2. Remember the good things God has done for you: “I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago” (Ps. 77:11).

If you ever come to my office, as we walk down the hallway, I will tell you story after story of the things God has done. Telling stories like this keeps the wonder of God’s supernatural direction, protection and provision on the top shelf of your heart. I also have pictures that I go through regularly to remind me of the things God has done and the people I have led to the Lord. Write down all the things God did for you in 2020 and praise His name, then share them with someone else. Post this list on your refrigerator too.

3. Remember the day of grace: “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son” (1 John 5:11). Never forget the day He touched your life to make you one of His children.

It was the day your sails caught the wind and your destiny was changed forever; it was the day His grace was imparted to your life. Write out your testimony of that day and post it on the refrigerator.

Why post these things on your refrigerator? They will serve as a physical reminder of God and His work in your life. Blessings on you and your family in 2021!

Just Joe: Rational and irrational fears Joe Ligon Oklahoma Baptists’ Senior Associate Executive Director @marlowpreacher

One of the more frequent commands that we find throughout the Bible is the admonition, “Do not fear.” Let’s be honest. Sometimes that is easy.

Sometimes that is not so easy. And sometimes it is just hard not to be fearful.

Think about it this way. There are some fears that are irrational and some fears that are rational. Let me explain. An irrational fear is something that we shouldn’t fear at all, like fearing a Martian invasion in the middle of the night. After all, everybody knows Martians will only invade during the daylight hours. So, there is absolutely no need to lay awake at night listening for the whirring noises of flying saucers.

You are probably thinking, “Joe, that is stupid.”

And you would be correct, which proves that is an irrational fear. It is as irrational as the fear of a can of Spam spoiling. It just ain’t gonna happen.

But there are some other fears that are rational fears. We can’t reason them away because they are just too real. And so we are left to struggle with them. You are undoubtedly wanting an example to help with this. So, let me see if I can provide one.

One of the rational fears that I have is of babies.

That doesn’t mean I am afraid they will hurt me or cause me some kind of harm. My fear of babies is much more realistic and plausible. I am afraid that if I try to hold a new born, his head could fall off.

After all, babies have those little spindly necks that are incapable of holding up a head. So, if you don’t hold a baby correctly, the head begins to wobble around, and enough wobbling could very well end up with a loose head. And once the head gets loose, you are just real close to the head falling completely off. And if the head should come off, I have no idea how to put it back on.

When I was pastoring, it was not uncommon for a young couple to bring me their newborn and ask me if I wanted to hold their baby. I would typically take two terrified steps back and mumble something about needing to go witness to one of my deacons.

The only newborns I have ever held were my two sons. Even that was crazy scary for me. Both of our boys were born with Ligon noggins which means their head size was literally off the charts. Their little necks didn’t stand a chance of holding up those Ligon noggins until they were about 4 years old. So, every time I held them, I could just imagine having to say, “Gayla, his head came off again. Will you come fix it?”

About a month ago, Gayla and I were blessed with our first grandchildren: we now have twin granddaughters. They’re beautiful and perfect in every way, but they can’t hold

their heads up yet. So, I haven’t held them yet.

One day they will, and on that day I will, but not until that time. Rational fear is not generational.

But you know, just because a fear is rational doesn’t make it OK to be afraid. The Bible doesn’t say, “Do not fear the irrational things.” For that matter, it doesn’t say, “Do not fear the rational things.” It just says, “Do not fear.” So, at some point, we just have to trust God to navigate us through the rational and the irrational. Trusting Him, really trusting Him, has a remarkable way helping us not be afraid.

While feeling saddened about withdrawing our original YEC plans, we sense our current reality provides a unique occasion for Oklahoma Baptists. If we leverage the technology available, we can unite, ignite and unleash teens with the Good News of Jesus like never before.

God is up to something, and we want Oklahoma Baptist teenagers to be at the forefront of His Gospel-advancing movement. So, we are now concentrating our energies on developing an exciting, new experience—YEC Virtual.

Good news, you don’t have to cancel YEC or Disciple Now (DNOW)! YEC Virtual is a FREE and unique training event for teens that delivers excellent training on evangelism and becoming a disciple who can make disciples. We can’t wait to see what God is going to do and pray that you and your teenagers will participate! Also, just because it’s virtual doesn’t mean it’s going to be light. Solid Biblical training and hands-on outreach opportunities will engage students’ faith in genuine and powerful ways.

Churches equipped to observe 2021 Sanctity of Human Life Sunday /// PREVIEWED ON COVER

Since 1984, pro-life Christians and churches have sought to protect unborn lives by taking part of the annual Sanctity of Human Life (SOHL) Sunday emphasis each January.

The 2021 SOHL Sunday is Jan. 17, and in the month of December, Oklahoma Baptists and Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children (OBHC) recently teamed up to produce resources designed to help pastors, churches and associations promote the sanctity of human life.

In a joint email to Oklahoma Baptists, OBHC President Greg McNeece and Hance Dilbeck, Oklahoma Baptists’ executive director-treasurer, encouraged pastors and churches to make the day a priority.

“Christians can play a significant role in spreading a life-affirming message, offering help and hope to parents and working to save lives and end abortion,” the email read. “We know the truth, that abortion kills, but God is the Author of life and abundant life (John 10), as we are wonderfully made, each of us, from the moment of conception.

“The people of God need to be reminded of this urgent cause of standing for life. Therefore, we ask you to set aside Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, January 17, 2021, as a time to lead your church in standing for life by becoming informed, participating in opportunities to share life-affirm-

ing views with others and in joining the work Oklahoma Baptists are engaged with, in pregnancy resource centers and foster care ministry across our state.”

The resources made available included videos, printable bulletin inserts and a new preaching guide, all of which include prayer and action points.

Oklahoma Baptists ‘spray it forward’ during COVID-19 outbreak >> by Chris Forbes STAFF WRITER

Mel Sparks is a man on a mission to “spray it forward.” His assignment: help Oklahoma Baptists in their continuing battle against COVID-19 by using a disinfecting sprayer on churches who have experienced exposure to the virus.

When the outbreak of the Coronavirus hit the state, Oklahoma Baptists invested Cooperative Program resources into purchasing sanitizing equipment in an effort to help churches stay open. Sparks, who has served as a volunteer with Oklahoma Baptists Disaster Relief for 14 years, has been on call since April to travel all over the state using the sprayer to treat churches in need of disinfection. Since then, more than 20 churches have invited Sparks to come use the sprayer in their facilities—some more than once.

The device Sparks uses is an electrostatic sanitizing machine that gives an anti-viral chemical from the sprayer tank a static charge that causes it to cling to surfaces, killing all types of viruses within 10 minutes. The mist is very fine, is dry to the touch and can be applied even with people in the room.

“We had a visitor come to our congregation who called us on Monday after they were here on Sunday, and they told us they had gotten checked for COVID and tested positive,” said Aaron Reed, pastor of Antlers, First. “We decided the best thing to do to ease people’s minds was to disinfect the building. It just so happened that James Swain (Oklahoma Baptists’ associate executive director and church relations group leader) was in our area and had stopped by my office to visit with me. He heard our conversation and shared with me that we had the opportunity to have Mel Sparks come down to spray our building.”

Reed said the sanitizing process eased the minds of church members. He invited Sparks a second time because another person announced they had been exposed to the virus. This disinfectant ministry helps protect people who seek in-person cooperate worship during the pandemic, and Sparks is happy to serve in this unique capacity.

The year 2020 presented Oklahoma Baptists with unparalleled challenges but also Gospel opportunities. Here are the Baptist Messenger’s 20 newsworthy occurrences, in no order of priority, that reflect the many memorable moments of the year.

Churches start virtual meetings, drive-in services As churches were facing the struggles of how to gather for worship amidst the COVID-19 lockdown, the concept of having virtual services through Facebook Live and other streaming services became a popular option among churches across Oklahoma. Variations of drive-in services also occurred, allowing church members to remain in their cars and socially distance while worshipping in outdoor settings. These adaptations of worship were successful as some churches experienced newcomers attending, as well as unique observances of baptism that were done throughout a week while following social distancing standards.

COVID-19 Response ministry online resource launched In March, Oklahoma Baptists added a feature on oklahomabaptists.org that offers a wide array of resources that pastors and churches could use while experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic. The Coronavirus Response Resource provided practical tips and news updates that were useful for church ministry.

Disaster Relief serves Louisiana Three major hurricanes rocked Louisiana last fall. Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers answered the call as more than 120 were stationed in the Lake Charles, La., area. Don Williams, Oklahoma state DR director, reported 13 people made professions of faith in Christ, resulting from DR volunteers sharing the Gospel while serving those affected by these storms.

Falls Creek and CrossTimbers summer weeks called off For the first time in 75 years, Falls Creek Youth Camps did not assemble for the summer in 2020. CrossTimbers Children’s Mission Adventure Camp also did not offer any sessions, as both camps were affected by factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘Falls Creek Road Show’ travels across Oklahoma Falls Creek leadership improvised for the summer of 2020. Since they could not host at the usual campsgrounds near Davis, they took to the road and offered 14 regional events called Falls Creek Road Shows. Todd Sanders, Falls Creek program director, described the Road Shows as a “Falls Creek evening service experience” with other notable elements familiar to Falls Creek attendees. Reports from the Road Shows include 426 total spiritual decisions made, including 120 professions of faith in Christ, 107 calls to ministry and 199 other spiritual decisions.

Foundation changes name to WatersEdge For 75 years, the Baptist Foundation of Oklahoma has been a reliable nonprofit Christian financial services organization. In 2020, the Foundation announced a name change while remaining committed to partnering with Oklahoma Baptists. In November, “WatersEdge Advisors and Ministry Services” was announced as the new official name, but Chief Executive Officer Robert Kellogg said, regardless of the name change, “Serving and strengthening Oklahoma Baptists will always be our primary purpose.”

‘Hope’ on wheels Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children (OBHC) announced in January 2020 a new ministry endeavor with Hope Pregnancy Centers. Launched in June, Hope’s first mobile ultrasound unit is staffed with a mobile operations manager and a registered nurse trained in sonography. OBHC President Greg McNeece said the mobile unit can reach “the most abortion-vulnerable women who lack transportation to visit a pregnancy center.”

IMB celebrates 175 years Since 1845, the International Mission Board (IMB) has been committed to effectively sharing the Gospel around the world. In 2020, IMB set up a special 175-day prayer emphasis to celebrate its 175th anniversary. The Baptist Messenger commemorated the milestone by featuring some of the first Oklahoma Baptists to serve as IMB missionaries including J.V. Dawes, Grace Elliott, Edward Hansford Crouch, John and Della Richardson and Rosalee Mills Appleby. Appleby was the first to respond to a call to missions at Falls Creek.

Notable Oklahoma Baptists deaths The Baptist Messenger shared with readers throughout 2020 the deaths of many Oklahoma Baptist leaders. Oklahoma Baptists abbreviate Annual Meeting The 2020 Annual Meeting for Oklahoma Baptists was compacted into a one-day event at Broken Arrow, First, Nov. 10, in order to meet COVID-19 protocols and precautions. In addition to sermons, messengers heard reports and conducted official business. Oklahoma Baptists’ officers were elected, including president Todd Fisher, pastor of Shawnee, Immanuel; first vice president Michael Butler, pastor of Chickasha, First; and second vice president Jason Yarbrough, pastor of Glenpool, First.

Oklahoma Baptists board ‘streamlines’ budget On Sept. 15, Oklahoma Baptists board of directors met for a quarterly meeting. One of the most prominent business matters that resulted from the meet-

ing was addressing 2020 finances of Oklahoma Baptists. Considering the major effects of a lockdown and business downfalls due the COVID-19 pandemic, board members successfully adapted the 2020 finances and also set the 2021 Cooperative Program allocation. “We were able to maintain financial stability in 2020. We streamlined our convention budget (for 2021),” said Hance Dilbeck, executive director-treasurer for Oklahoma Baptists.

Oklahoma Baptists help schools, communities amid pandemic Churches across Oklahoma were involved in serving through disruptions of everyday life, including helping children adapt to new school schedules involving both in-person and virtual meetings. Churches opened their buildings for those who needed access to internet, tutoring or homework space for unconventional and ever-changing schedules in 2020. Churches also were involved in food and dairy distribution and going into neighborhoods to let people know that Oklahoma Baptists care and are available to help them through the unprecedented times. Baptist Village Communities also found ways to adapt, including friends and loved ones having neighborhood parades and having residents participate in socially-distanced choir meetings. Baptist Collegiate Ministries provided meals and online Bible studies to college students who remained on campus.

Oklahoma Panhandle reaches the nations In the July 23 Baptist Messenger, IMB writer William Haun shared how Guymon, First is making an impact on a large refugee community from North Africa. The story also reports on how Guymon, First also is connecting with members of a Southeast Asian people group.

Oklahoma Baptists host regional events on sexual abuse prevention Three events in Ardmore, Oklahoma City and Tulsa took place in late February with MinistrySafe founder Greg Love as a key speaker. The purpose of the conferences was to make churches better aware of risks and to help abate and eliminate sexual abuse.

Remembering the OKC Bombing 25 years later In the April 9 edition of the Baptist Messenger, Bob Nigh, historical secretary of Oklahoma Baptist Historical Commission, recalled the moments of the great tragedy on April 19, 1995. Oklahoma City became a focal point across the world after the huge explosion at 9:02 a.m. that Wednesday. Nigh also reported how Oklahoma Baptists responded in a great time of need, leading to a service standard that reflects the many ministries of Oklahoma Baptists.

SBC cancels 2020 Annual Meeting in Orlando The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Annual Meeting was scheduled to meet in Orlando June 9-10, but SBC officers voted to cancel the event for the first time in 75 years. The 1945 Annual Meeting was cancelled during World War II when U.S. government banned meetings of groups larger than 50 people.

SBC leaders respond to tragic George Floyd death SBC leaders published a statement grieving the death of George Floyd on May 25, which sparked national outrage. The statement was co-authored by SBC President J.D. Greear and New Orleans Seminary President Jamie Dew and was unanimously signed by all SBC officers, entity heads and state convention executive directors including Hance Dilbeck.

‘SEND Oklahoma Network’ launched by NAMB and Oklahoma Baptists A partnership was formed in August with the North American Mission Board and Oklahoma Baptists for a new church planting network. SEND Oklahoma Network approved two church plants in December with more church plants happening in early 2021.

Stateside IMB missionaries gather for fellowship, encouragement Oklahoma Baptists hosted 34 International Mission Board missionaries and their children Aug. 12 for a luncheon, encouraging the stateside missionaries who were affected by international travel limitations caused by the pandemic.

Missionaries said they were refreshed as a result of the meeting.

Tulsa Race Massacre remembered, 1921 Scholarship announced During the 2020 Annual Meeting, a segment of the program focused on remembering the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. A video was shown featuring Anthony Scott, pastor of the historic North Tulsa church, and Hance Dilbeck. The video dialogue recounted the tragic historic event on May 31, 1921, in which the entire Greenwood District of Tulsa and Black Wall Street were destroyed. Also, a new scholarship program called the 1921 Scholarship. Created in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, the 1921 Scholarship will award two full scholarships to Black students at Oklahoma Baptist University. The scholarship will be funded in partnership by Oklahoma Baptists, and the Oklahoma Baptists African American Fellowship will help identify qualified young men and women for the scholarships.

He had a longtime career with Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM), serving as BCM director at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Rose State College and Oklahoma State University. He also served on many church staffs, including Oklahoma City Wilmont Place; Goodwell, First; and Midwest City, Country Estates. Ramirez also served as director of collegiate ministry for the Baptist Convention of New England and as national coordinator for collegiate evangelism for the North American Mission Board. He also worked for LifeWay Christian Resources, serving state collegiate directors across the country. He is survived by his wife Anna; sons David and Mark and two grandchildren.

MASTELLER DEATH. Rod Masteller, 75, died Dec. 13. Funeral services were observed online Dec. 17. He was a pastor for nearly 50 years, leading a number of congregations in Oklahoma, Louisiana and other states. He served in several denominational roles at the state and national level. For 16 years, he served as senior pastor of Oklahoma City, Putnam City and also pastored at Jenks, First and Harrah, First. He served as president of Oklahoma Baptists for two terms, 1987-88, among his other leadership roles. He preached at Falls Creek summer camp, and he was involved in the memorial service for the victims of the Murrah Federal bombing in Oklahoma City. He is survived by his wife of 53 year, Linda; his four daughters, Michelle Gage, Kim Welch, Crystal Gornto and Heather Oathout; and 11 grandchildren.

Leaders continually faced with the question of whether or not they will take every opportunity the Lord presents to advance the Gospel and build the Church. In terms of the continuing work of making disciples, post-profession of faith, how might S the church I S TGospel P Tthe A B A M encourage one another to advance in the O H OKLA T H G I L H coming year? ConsiderRhow it might look to accept the C E H IG U O S E R challenge to baptize one in 2021. Could you: • Baptize one more than you did last year?

• Baptize one every month for the year?

• Baptize at least one who has trusted Christ and never followed the Lord in baptism?

• Baptize one per Sunday school class or small group?

There are a number of ways to fit the challenge to each context. Whatever the decision on how to approach the goal, the idea is to prioritize baptism in the New Year.

Leadership thinker John Adair said that, without a plan, strategic thinking turns into strategic dreaming. Do we have vision for seeing students come to faith and seeing them baptized, growing as believers? Then develop a plan and attack it!

Do you have any advice or practices for helping people be successful and achieve their goals? —Tim Dear Tim, Goals are dreams, but you can’t stop with just dreaming. Examining your goals inside and out, and by thoughtfully constructing small, achievable steps toward them is the key to creating change in your life. Remember, too, that it’s your responsibility—not someone else’s—to fix things in your life. If you’re waiting for someone or something else to make things better, you’re going to be disappointed.

When it comes to setting and achieving goals, be specific about what you want to achieve. Vague, unspecified ideas will only cause you to feel overwhelmed, and this will likely lead to you giving up.

Also, make your goals measurable. If you want to lose weight, don’t simply write down “lose weight” as a goal. How much weight do you want to lose? How many pounds would you have to lose per week in order to see the desired result in a specified amount of time?

This one may sound silly, but are the goals you have in mind your goals? If a spouse or friend sets goals for you, you’re probably not going to succeed. Creating a goal, and taking ownership of it, will give you more incentive to meet your goal. Setting a time frame will help you develop more realistic goals, too. And last, always put your goals in writing. Write them down, and review them often. This will provide you with added motivation to make your goals a reality.

Successful people examine and reassess their lives on a regular basis.
