LAKE CHARLES, La.—As part of Southern Baptists’ coordinated response to Hurricane Laura, teams of Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief (DR) headed to Louisiana on Aug. 30 to offer hope and help.

Don Williams, Oklahoma Baptists’ DR state director, said, “We have been in close conversations with leaders coordinating the disaster response. Oklahoma Baptists have been called on to help, and we will answer that call.”

The challenges we have faced in 2020 remind us that we live in a broken world. As Christians, this should come as no surprise. Jesus Himself told us that in this world, we will have trouble. But He said we should “take heart,” because He has overcome the world (John 16:33).

Jesus also teaches us to embrace brokenness as opportunity for the Gospel. This year’s Edna McMillan Oklahoma State Missions Offering seeks to embrace brokenness as opportunity. This offering impacts key areas of brokenness in society—hunger, foster care, imprisonment, addiction—with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

BETHANY—Two Oklahoma City metro area churches have formed a partnership in recent weeks to address the race issue. Bethany, Council Road and Oklahoma City, Bethlehem Star are seeking advancement together in racial unity.

“We may not be able to solve all the racial problems in Oklahoma City, but we CAN make a difference,” declared Pastor Rodney Payne of Bethlehem Star, while speaking with Pastor Rick Thompson at Council Road during a recent Sunday morning service.

“There is no electricity anywhere in the city,” said Sam Porter, national director for Southern Baptist Disaster Relief with Send Relief and the North American Mission Board. “Some have said it looks like a hundred tornadoes landed in Lake Charles two nights ago. As we drove in with the truck from Send Relief, we had to dodge debris on the main road to the church.”

“We are bringing our large generator to bring light to the church, which seems so fitting,” Williams said. “We have a partnership with Red Cross and will be feeding those impacted. We will begin recovery work once our team members arrive.”

According to Williams, more than 55 Oklahoma Baptists will be serving Lake Charles.

“The feeding unit has been assigned to prepare 2,500 twice a day (5,000 total meals a day) starting Wednesday (Sept. 2),” Williams said. “We have assessors and chaplains on the ground visiting, praying with and ministering to impacted homeowners. A chainsaw crew also is there to begin work. A water truck is on the way.”

Williams said DR volunteers will be staying at Lake Charles, Moss Bluff while they are serving.

“We are coordinating out-of-state DR assistance,” Williams said. “Nine states are currently responding with six more waiting the ‘OK’ to come help.

Prayers are greatly appreciated for those who experienced major damage and are without power, water and food. God has given us a great mission field to serve and bring hope and healing.”

The challenges we have faced in 2020 remind us that we live in a broken world. As Christians, this should come as no surprise. Jesus Himself told us that in this world, we will have trouble. But He said we should “take heart,” because He has overcome the world (John 16:33).

Jesus also teaches us to embrace brokenness as opportunity for the Gospel. This year’s Edna McMillan Oklahoma State Missions Offering seeks to embrace brokenness as opportunity.

This offering impacts key areas of brokenness in society—hunger, foster care, imprisonment, addiction—with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. People

who are distressed and downcast like shepherdless sheep are people who have value to Jesus. He calls us to give them help and to give them the hope of the Gospel.

Consider two realities connected to this 2020 State Missions Offering. First, God is glorified when people give in unity—giving together to advance the Gospel together. This act of putting our money together to advance the Gospel in our state will glorify God. This offering is an undeniable display of our fellowship in the Gospel.

Second, God is glorified when people give out of scarcity. I know that this year finds many of our people, and many of our churches, with real financial challenges. If we merely give our surplus, we might not give much. However, we are called to sacrificial giving, and God is glorified through sacrificial giving. Remember Paul’s description of this kind of giving from Philippi and the other churches of northern Greece.

“Now, brethren, we wish to make known to you the

grace of God which has been given in the churches of Macedonia, that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality. For I testify that according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave of their own accord” (2 Cor. 8:1-3 NASB).

Through this year’s offering, both of these realities can come together: a unified commitment in a time of scarcity that glorified our Lord.

Thank you for your sharing in the Gospel through this offering. I am praying that Oklahoma Baptists will give more in the year of scarcity than we have ever given in years of abundance.

Please pray about how you and your church can participate in this year’s Edna McMillan Oklahoma State Missions Offering. Let’s consider how, together, we can embrace challenging times as an opportunity for the greater advancement of the Gospel.

The other day, I was enjoying some caffeine and conversation at a local coffee shop with some buddies. I must have been talking too loudly and got on a soap box, talking about Christians and morality, when it happened.

Another person suddenly burst into our conversation and said, “Hey, I want to challenge what you just said. I know many atheists, and they are some really moral people, too.”

Surprised by the sudden comment, I thanked the person for sharing their perspective and both of us moved on.

Reflecting on this moment, it really should not have surprised me this happened. In fact, I more than likely have also invited myself into conversations before, offering up my viewpoints.

Social media even rewards this type of behavior every day. You, too, may have come across a ran-

dom post or comment and found yourself arguing with someone you don’t know or barely know.

Pop culture has given a mocking and cruel name to people who do this kind of thing: “Karen,” they are called. While I dislike that term, I do recognize an increasing trend of hyper-critical and irritable attitudes out there just waiting to erupt, especially in the online world.

A recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll revealed that “the American public holds negative views of social media… with sizable majorities saying these sites do more to divide the country than unite it...”

Yet before we blame our bad behavior on social media or technology, Christians should know better than to fall into the sad/mad/scared frenzy.

After all, Jesus Himself said to “fear not,” and He shows us the example of being a people of “grace and truth.”

So what can we do in the face of a trend toward being quick to comment, slow to listen and quick to become angry? We can go back to the Bible which tells us, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry (James 1:19).”

U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, author of the compelling book Them: Why We Hate Each Other and How to Heal,

described some solutions to our increasingly uncivil society this way: “Deep, enduring change does not come through legislation or elections. Meaningful change comes as lots and lots of individual minds are persuaded and hearts changed. Deep change allows people to change their minds without needing, first, to ‘eat crow.’ It tolerates provisional and partial agreements. It’s the logic of neighbors who live side by side. It’s the logic of the long-term, which respects the dignity and agency of debate partners.

Sasse continued, “Warriors view the present moment as make-or-break for all time—but neighbors do not. Neighbors see today’s conversation not as the last discussion we’ll ever have, but as a precursor to tomorrow’s. We can and will visit again. We can continue talking and listening. We can be open to future persuasion—and to being persuaded. We need not win everything by force, and we need not win everything right now.”

The next time we are tempted to become driveby critics—whether in person or online—pause, listen and pray. And who knows? Perhaps instead of simply winning an argument, you will see someone won to Christ.

I don’t like running, especially if it is required of me. As a child, I loved chasing after lightning bugs or baseballs. I loved it when my brothers and I ran through the woods behind our house. Nonessential running was freedom. But when I went to school and we were required I Fit.I E DtoSrun around the football S Slike L IAdidn’t fiC eld, It seems I keep finding myself in places where running is required or demanded. When I arrived at basic training in Fort Campbell, Ky., I was assigned as a platoon leader. What was my job first thing every morning? Take the platoon on a 3-mile run.

I don’t run with grace; my gait is more like a washing machine C EitSgoes into the spin cycle and the V O Iwhen load is off-center. You hear the thump, thump sound as my right leg comes around again. If you were sitting as a bystander as I ran my platoon by, your observation would be that it looked more like the platoon was chasing me and less like I was leading them.

My oldest son, Jeremiah who is 44 and a runner, decided that he wanted to run the Boston Marathon this year in memory of a friend who passed away. The problem was that he had never run a marathon, and you have to qualify to get invited to this prestigious race. The next qualifier for him was in Atlanta, so he and his wife got in the car, drove to Atlanta and ran the marathon. He came in fourth in his age division and 12th overall in Atlanta. He did so well that he was invited to be in the first wave of runners for the Boston Marathon.

I tell you all of this because the Boston Marathon was

canceled this year, and they have ered him a place RE ToffU L U C & S W E in the 2021 Nrun. He still can run the Boston Marathon this year, but in his own neighborhood. For Christmas last year, he gave me a T-shirt that said, “Boston Marathon Support Team 2020.” On Sept. 13, I will be in Dallas to be part of the support team as he runs the virtual Boston Marathon alone. Our family will be spread out on the course with Gatorades, water and words of encouragement.

Jeremiah had only one request for me: that I run the last mile with him. Now, I am in a dilemma: 1. I don’t like running.

2. I am 13 months shy of my 70th birthday.

3. Did I say I don’t like running?

4. A mile is a lot longer than it used to be.

5. I don’t want to slow him down and extend his time.

6. Even in September, Dallas is hot.

7. My name is Walker, not Runner.

8. I haven’t run a mile since my Army days.

9. I think my son wants to get his inheritance early.

10. Did I mention I don’t like running?

Still, my son invited me. It touched my heart that he wants his old dad to share in this experience. We have had many of these special moments in our lives, from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to hiking Petra together. So how can I say no?

I have changed my training exercises from hiking and climbing to running and more cardio. Yesterday, I ran two miles at a moderate pace, and today, I was able to run a mile matching what he says will be his speed for the final mile.

There is something about a father and son doing something together. It is a sweet spot for our relationship, and I know it was for Jesus and His Father. In fact, He and His Father have always worked together.

“Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does’” (John 5:19).

Even today, Jesus invites you to join Him in His work. He invited a woman at a well who had been married five times before and was living with a man who wasn’t her husband to follow Him. He invited some fishermen to drop their nets and follow Him. He invited a wealthy and educated man to join Him in the Kingdom work. And it was this man, Nicodemus, who helped wrap Jesus for burial.

Jesus even invited a broken-down author and missionary to continue to follow Him. And He is inviting you to come and join Him in learning of His life and ways. His invitation is very simple: “‘Come,’ He replied, ‘and you will see’” (John 1:39).

During these months of Coronavirus pandemic, my wife Shari and I spent more time at home together than we have in years. We invited a pretend person to live with us whom we’ve fondly named “Mary.” Mary made a lot of messes. Mary hid things from us. Mary especially forgot chores, but I’m sure glad she was there to blame!

I guess I also need reminders sometimes. Lately I have found some great ones in the book of Philippians.

As Paul and Timothy introduce themselves in Phil.

1:1, I am awed to consider who they were. Paul was a brilliant Jewish scholar who formerly took pleasure in watching the murder of Christian believers. I love this verse because it reminds me to whom salvation is offered—the worst we know, the impossible person, the “no-way” reprobate.

Paul wrote more than half of the New Testament, despite being that guy we’d have church security watch to protect members. He wrote about 1/6 of the Bible overall, and yet we would have been sorely uncomfortable to be anywhere near him when he was at his worst.

In Acts 16, Paul noticed Timothy’s strong testimony. A young man raised by a godly mother, Timothy joined Paul to advance the Gospel to the church of Philippi. I love this verse because it reminds me we

need to continually disciple young believers. A primary reason that young adults will remain committed to church attendance is meaningful relationships with people of all ages. It’s absolutely vital to make time to disciple the next generation of believers.

When my oldest son Kirt was 15, Shari and I determined it was time to teach him to drive. Days, weeks and months spent helping him with this skill convinced me I needed to apologize to my own parents for their struggles when I learned to drive. When Kirt was behind the wheel, my hand was close to the emergency break. I prayed a lot and raised my voice a few times, but we got through it. Kirt has now doubled his age and is probably a better driver than I. We must be committed to disciple the next generation. Don’t just wish them luck and throw them the keys but sit next to them and help them learn to drive that ministry or guide a class. A great acronym (MAWL) I learned from former missionaries is: M–Model A–Assist W–Watch L–Leave The passage Phil.2:5-11 likely was an early Christian hymn. Verses 1-11 point out the amazing grace that Jesus gives to us. His servant attitude led Him to the cross. He who never sinned became sin for us. I love these verses because it reminds me of the sacrifice of Christ to give me peace. Verse 4 in particular

reminds me to pay forward to others the grace that Christ gives to me. I also love that these verses show HOW to show grace and who to show it to.

Of all groups, I have the easiest time showing grace to unsaved people. They don’t know any other way to act than lost. I struggle more to show grace to fellow Christians. I expect a lot from them and sometimes can’t believe how they act, yet Christ models the grace that I should give them.

By far, the hardest person to show grace is myself. Paul points out that we must. We must forgive ourselves, so we can care for others. I still fail. I forget, and I flop. Then Jesus shows me grace again. He died for that very purpose. How dare I not show myself grace!

Remember our make-believe houseguest, Mary? Having her live with us, taking all our blame, was conveniently freeing. Our Savior isn’t make-believe! He’s real, and the blame placed on Him wasn’t convenient.

Jesus, our Lord who is God, took our punishment and gave us freedom. Show grace to everyone and keep these spiritual sticky notes as reminders.

Paul reminds us anyone can be saved. Timothy reminds us the next generation needs discipling. Jesus reminds us of God’s sacrifice and grace. Remind yourself to accept that grace and show it to others!

SHAWNEE—The Call Conference met for the 10th consecutive year Aug. 29 with more than 240 participants at Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU).

Brian Baldwin, student evangelism and missions partner for Oklahoma Baptists, said the Call Conference is “designed for those who are exploring a call to ministry, whether they are discovering it or they are deepening their call.”

This year’s theme for the Call Conference is “Unexpected,” based on 2 Cor. 4:7, “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”

Baldwin also applied the parable of the talents (Matt. 25:14-30) throughout the conference, how it is important for Christians not to “hide our talents.”

“We are thankful for OBU not ‘hiding their talent,’ but making the investment and allowing the Call Conference to happen on their campus,” Baldwin said. “It could have been easier to cancel it.

The same is applied to church youth leaders who brought young people to the conference. They could have considered not coming.”

Todd Sanders, Falls Creek program director and student ministry partner for Oklahoma Baptists, also expressed his appreciation for this year’s Call Conference.

“I probably share the opinion with other ministers in our Oklahoma Baptist churches that I wish I had an opportunity like this when I first felt called to ministry,” Sanders said. “The Call Conference creates an integral step in creating a ministry

Keynote speakers for this year’s Call Conference included Ed Newton and Mathew Emerson.

Newton, a Falls Creek favorite speaker who currently serves as pastor at a church in San Antonio, Texas, opened the Call Conference speaking on “confirming the call.”

“Today is about putting a hand on your shoulder,” Newton said, “looking you right in the face and saying ‘God is not just going to greatly use you; He is currently greatly using you.’ Stepping into that space and place that God is calling you is not about your ability in serving God; it’s about your availability.”

Emerson, dean of OBU’s Hobbs College of Theology and Ministry, spoke on what it means to

grow in the call to ministry. Wrapping up the main sessions, both Baldwin and Sanders led a discussion time of what it means to follow the Lord in the calling.

Participants also had the opportunity to choose among 13 breakout sessions. Two new topics at this year’s conference were “First Two Years of Ministry,” led by Parker Goforth, and “Small Town Ministry,” led by Ryan Yount.

The other breakout topics included “Slash/ Pursuing a Call that Looks Different,” “Leading Those Called,” “Women and Ministry,” “Missions,” “Children,” “Youth Ministry,” “Pastoral Ministry,” “Called to Obedience (New Believer’s Track),” “Worship,” “Evangelism” and “Discipleship and Small Group Ministry.”

Church-school connection: Oklahoma Baptists provide homework space, school supplies and more for students /// PREVIEWED ON COVER >> by Chris Forbes

With the 2020-2021 school year beginning while the Coronavirus is still looming, some Oklahoma schools have not been able to fully open their doors to students. The State Board of Education protocols requires pupils to attend classes virtually or through a combination of in-person and virtual meetings.

The quarantine rules have left some families scrambling for how to provide for the educational needs of their children. Parents who cannot work from home need a place for their kids to study during the week.

Other homes do not have access to internet or lack adequate bandwidth to support their children studying at home using video conferencing.

To help these students, Oklahoma Baptist churches are opening their doors to pupils in need of a clean and safe place with a good Wi-Fi connection to study.

Jennifer Sise, outreach coordinator for Edmond, Henderson Hills, explained how her church is responding with their Homework at The Hills program.

“We knew that all of the changes within school systems were significantly impacting families, and we wanted to find a way to help ease their burden,” Sise said. “We were praying and seeking the Lord’s leading. Through the course of different events and encounters with people in the community, we discovered that some common needs across the board were things like having a place for students on the days that they didn’t have in-person school.

“Wi-Fi access is an issue for some people,” she continued, “and many parents were considering bringing their kids to their workplace all day. Having access to tutoring and getting lunch for their kids was also a concern. We wanted to be sure to meet practical needs, all while sharing Jesus.”

Sise explained that building relationships with families for the sake of the Gospel is foundational in the church’s preparation and planning for the weekly classes hosted at Henderson Hills on Wednesdays.

“Each week the Gospel will be presented in a variety of ways,” she said, “through someone sharing it from the stage, through the volunteers and staff serving the students directly, and through other activities that are planned throughout the day, such as games, coloring pages and more.

“We had almost 90 kids the first day and are anticipating doubling in size and continuing to grow. We are prayerfully putting a cap on the total number of kids we allow to register in order to keep safety and resources in good balance for the families we are serving.”

Oklahoma City, Trinity seized on their COVID-response moment to relaunch their children’s ministry. When Lanette James became Trinity’s children’s minister in February, the ministry had only three children enrolled.

“We used the time when we were closed to redo a 100-year-old facility,” James explained.

As back to school planning began, the church decided to leverage the use of their newly-renovated children’s facilities by opening The Homework Place on Sept. 2. Each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon, Trinity offers kids Kindergarten through 4th grade virtual academics and volunteer teachers.

“We are a small church and have small resources, so anything we do, we keep our goals in mind,” James said. “The Homework Place was created as a way to assist our community during a challenging time. As a result of the registration we have one new family that is now attending our kids ministry and adult worship.

Currently, we are running 18 to 20 children each Sunday, and I am in contact with eight other new families we have never met before.”

Other churches around the state are providing support for students by donating backpacks filled with school supplies. Roger Howell, associate pastor of students & missions at Weatherford, Emmanuel, said the church wanted to make sure that the community knew they were cared for without any strings attached.

“With our community still coming out of the financial difficulties of the COVID-19 shutdown, we knew that there would be a need in our community to help,” Howell said.

The church prepared the backpacks filled with needed school supplies along with resources to encourage students spiritually.

“We included a Bible in every backpack, along with information on our fall children’s events to encourage them to come join us at church,” Howell said.

“This event allowed our Emmanuel family to donate, pray for and give away the bags together as a way to disciple spiritual maturity in our church family.”

Pastor Tosh Miller of Waynoka, First said that his church’s response was altered by COVID-19 protocols, but they got the job done.

“We did a bigger event for last year’s back to school,” Miller explained. “Last year, we gave backpacks with school supplies inside to anyone who came to our back-to-school event. This year, Waynoka Public Schools was providing all the school supplies needed, so we just provided some backpacks which we brought to the school’s office.”

The restrictions didn’t keep the church from making a spiritual impact in the community, however.

“Our Ministerial Alliance had a prayer walk around the school before our teachers came back to get ready. We had about 50 people from the community that came out for that,” he said.

Across the state, Oklahoma Baptist churches are recognizing needs during the back-to-school process. Though it takes innovation with the current pandemic, Oklahoma Baptists still find ways to advance the Gospel.

A United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded food distribution program, which was established during the Coronavirus pandemic, is helping Oklahoma Baptist churches meet needs and advance the Gospel.

The USDA program Farmers to Families has committed to purchase $3 billion in fresh produce, dairy and meat products from American producers of all sizes. The products are packaged into family-sized boxes, then transported to churches, food banks and other non-profits serving communities in need without cost to the distributor or the consumer.

According to Rusty Gunn, who is spearheading the program’s church-based initiatives in the state, about 57 Oklahoma churches have participated in the distribution of food and dairy products. About one third of those churches are Oklahoma Baptists.

“We were contacted by a program representative and asked if we would serve as a hub in our area for distribution. So that meant we would distribute in our community but we would also seek out and help coordinate with other churches and organizations to distribute,” said Gunn, pastor of Sand Springs, Church that Matters.

Metro churches partner to address racial unity /// PREVIEWED ON COVER >> by Sarah Sutton

BETHANY—Two Oklahoma City metro area churches have formed a partnership in recent weeks to address the country’s race issue. Bethany, Council Road and Oklahoma City, Bethlehem Star are seeking advancement together in racial unity.

“We may not be able to solve all the racial problems in Oklahoma City, but we CAN make a difference,” declared Pastor Rodney Payne of Bethlehem Star, while speaking with Pastor Rick Thompson at Council Road during a recent Sunday morning service.

The two pastors have forged a friendship over the past few years and recently decided to take steps to get their two churches together in multiple worship experiences.

“Our hope is that through our planned events, our two congregations would form friendships that 2 will bear fruit in understanding and trust that will help strengthen and unify our faith communities,” Thompson said.

Council Road, a predominantly Anglo church, is about as far west as one can travel on N.W. 23rd Street, and Bethlehem Star, a predominantly African American church, sits as far east on N.E. 23rd Street in Oklahoma City. They are about 15 miles apart.

Payne preached at Council Road recently on Jer. 29:10-14, following Council Road’s current plan of reading through the Bible this year. In a timely message, Payne acknowledged the struggles the country is currently facing but reminded the congregation they can unlock the power of God through prayer.

“What is designed to destroy you can grow you if it is treated with respect,” Payne said. “God knows what He is doing before He even starts.”

Payne emphasized that suffering is seasonal, and that God has thoughts of peace toward His followers even in trials. “Don’t let your circumstances stifle your praise,” he said.

Thompson said he invited Payne to Council Road to be a part of a previous service.

that we did on Proverbs 11, which says when the righteous prosper the city rejoices,” Thompson said. “I felt like that would be a good time to have Rodney come for an interview.”

One unexpected result of the partnership developed because of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Bethlehem Star has not done any in-person services since the outbreak started in March, and Council Road has had limited in-person involvement since starting to meet again at the church in May. This means both churches have a strong online presence.

The churches joined together for an online service with both worship teams combining to lead worship through music. “It turned out really great,” Thompson said. “Our people loved it.”

Since the service was online with both churches sharing a live feed, members of both churches were 3 exchanging encouraging comments to each other.

“They started having conversations on the live feed,” Thompson said. “Young adult pastors started making plans on the live chat, and other young adults started chiming in. There was a serendipitous, unexpected development within that moment. We were not planning for that. It just happened.”

The two churches also have reserved an area in the Myriad Gardens in downtown Oklahoma City for a combined Christmas event Nov. 29 to kick off the Advent season.

Thompson attended a planning meeting of the Christmas event between the two churches.

“I was gratified by the instant friendship that was going on,” he said about the planning meeting. “There’s a lot of plans being made. It’s happening in large part because we are online communities now. If we had been in the physical space, like we were before, maybe not as many people would be engaged.”

Other churches across the state have been involved in pulpit swaps and joint gatherings with intentions of racial unity being the result. Thompson said he hopes more churches would consider doing what is happening between Council Road and Bethlehem Star.

“People are talking about it in the community,” Thompson said. “I’m hearing that a lot. It has been reported in the media pretty broadly.

I know it’s having an impact in the community which is what we hoped would happen—that others would see churches and people who love Jesus. And because of their love for Christ, the barriers that maybe the world sets up between people groups will just fall apart.”

Baptist roots run deep for musician and Baptist Village resident Richard Huggins >> by Jason Davis

From Oklahoma Baptist University to Falls Creek, and Billy Graham ministries to Baptist Village, the talented Richard Huggins is a well-traveled Southern Baptist.

Huggins, 72, is a music arranger, producer and music editor. He grew up in Oklahoma City, the son of the late James Huggins and Lois Hopper. He was the middle child of five siblings. Though his father was a physician, he never pressured his children to follow in his footsteps. This led the young Richard to pursue his interest in music from the tender age of five.

“I had come back from my sister’s wedding, sat at the piano and began to play a tune that I heard at the wedding,” Huggins recalled. “My mom thought that maybe I should get some lessons. After a year of lessons, the teacher didn’t think I had the talent to do it. Luckily she didn’t prevail, and I continued with music from an early age and continued on through college.”

Huggins graduated from Putnam City Schools and then from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he was a member of the Bison Glee Club. He served as an accompanist for countless Baptist events in Oklahoma during high school and college. In fact, it was in high school that he first developed his love for Falls Creek.

“When I was 16 years old, I got a call from Mary June Tabor, the secretary to Gene Bartlett,” Huggins said.

“I attended Oklahoma City, Olivet with her, so she knew me pretty well. She said Gene wanted to hear me play, so I came down to the Baptist Building’s chapel. I played him a pretty unique rendition of ‘To God Be the Glory.’

“Not long after that, Gene called, asking if I could come play for the first week of Falls Creek.

I was thrilled, but I was in driver’s ed at the time and had to attend that. So I didn’t play that year, but the summer after that I was able to. The first hymn I ever played at Falls Creek was ‘Victory in Jesus’ – a hymn written by Gene’s father. Years later when they were about to tear down the old tabernacle, I returned to Falls Creek just to visit. I saw the old piano up there, and I sat down and played ‘Victory in Jesus’ one last time as kind of my farewell at Falls Creek.”

Huggins played at Falls Creek for five years.

In the 1980s, Huggins served as a pianist or organist at four Billy Graham Associate Crusades.

“Being able to be a part of the Billy Graham ministries was a wonderful experience,” Huggins said.

“I played at crusades in New Mexico and Kentucky.

Tom Bledsoe, who was a music minister in Oklahoma City, was also responsible for recruiting musicians for the crusades. He recruited me. The opportunity to play was tremendously exciting.

“I met Billy at my church in Gatlinburg, Tenn., where I was the youth director and organist. He was the real thing. What you saw on TV was what you got in person.”

Baptist Village of Oklahoma City is currently enjoying Huggins’ amazing talents. Huggins moved there in March and is already putting his skills to use. He is a regular pianist for Village sing-alongs and worship services.

And he is enjoying Village life. “The team members here have been very good to us,” he said. “And I have the freedom to do a lot of what I want to do. I enjoy getting to play special music for people.

“I have played for lots of things in my life, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I’ve been blessed.”

Likewise, Richard Huggins’ talents have blessed thousands of Southern Baptists all over the country.

Comanche, First hosted a block party on Sat., Aug. 29 for the community. The event attracted nearly 200 people.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to show love to the community,” said Pastor Mark Hall. “We were able to use the Mullins Association block party trailer, provided through the Cooperative Program.

HOMINY—W.R. (Bob) Hough celebrates his 100th birthday on Sept. 23. He has been a strong advocate for Jesus Christ for 61 years. After serving as a combat Marine during World War II, his spiritual path began in 1959 with help from Pastor Newfeld at Bartlesville, Silver Lake. Hough moved his family to Wynona in 1960. He loves the Lord and has dedicated 56 years as a church member, minister and deacon, leading Wynona, First through strenuous times of both growth and loss.

Hough became a licensed minister at age 39, and primarily served neighboring churches in times of need. He refers to himself as a “relief preacher.” He was ordained to the deacon ministry at Wynona, First and wore many hats, as so many do in small communities—preaching, Bible studies, youth, homebound people, visitations and committee chairman.

He has fond memories of taking the youth to Training Union where the Wynona youth would visit other churches on Friday night once or twice a year, winning the Traveling Award for the largest number of attendees on several occasions.

Currently, Hough continues his mission of service, supporting Senior Pastor Mark Formby at Hominy, First with ongoing church ministries.

An open house honoring Hough’s 100 years will be Saturday, Sept. 26, 1-3 p.m., at the Hominy, First Fellowship Hall, 202 S. Price Avenue. Due to COVID-19 regulations, masks are mandatory. He is survived by his wife of 65 years; his children Gregory Kimbler, Bradley Kimbler and Staci Ann Kimbler Curry; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

vice. Sometimes they come looking for spiritual wisdom, but mostly they just want to talk to someone.

There has been a common theme as of late. Everyone seems to be struggling just a little bit more. It might not always be a financial struggle orTrelational I S T S struggle.

R R EonS O It would be easy to blame all of this on COVID-19, but such a simplistic answer doesn’t dive deep enough for me.

It’s not just the fact that we’ve been weathering an unusual storm. It’s also shown us some things about ourselves.

So many of the things that brought us a sense of comfort and security are now floating like birthday balloons in the air. If you’ve ever seen a kid lose his birthday balloon at a party, you know the look of fear and panic that comes across their faces.

This colorful balloon that they once controlled by holding onto a little string is now dangling from the ceiling just out of reach. He can’t jump high enough to reach it, but he can still see it, and the fear that it might pop is overwhelming.

It might help speed up the process a tiny bit, but the habits that got you into debt in the first place won’t change just because you’ve switched credit card companies. What you’re talking about is an easy way to lower the interest rates—temporarily, in most cases—but it doesn’t keep you from taking on more debt.

Many people think they’ve really done something to solve their debt problems when they do this. But you’ve got to remember that getting out of debt, and gaining control of your finances, is all about changing the person you see in the mirror. You’ve got to make a commitment to getting out of debt, staying out of debt, and sticking to a written, monthly budget—that means keeping track of every, single dollar and living on less than you make.

In many cases, when people have problems with debt it’s the result of unwise lifestyle and financial choices. But guess what?

When you change, interest rates don’t matter nearly as much. And when you shift your mindset about money, that will make a difference in a way that changing credit card companies and chasing lower interest rates can’t!

Music to His ears: OSWC allows Oklahoma O I C E S students to lead worship VBaptist >> by Staff A new worship opportunity begins in September for Oklahoma Baptists’ students. The Oklahoma Student Worship Choir (OSWC) is a new ministry outreach of Oklahoma Baptists and Oklahoma Baptists Worship and Music.

“On Sept. 12, about 35 students from all across Oklahoma will gather at Midwest City, Meadowood to begin a new era of ministry for Oklahoma Baptists,” said Randy Lind, worship and music ministry partner for Oklahoma Baptists. “This is the date when the new Oklahoma Student Worship Choir will meet for the very first time.”

Randy Holt, music minister at Inola, First, will be the director and said that first choir rehearsal on Sept.

12 will be “a fast and furious day” with a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time. The choir will be preparing for its first Night of Worship on Sept. 27 at Chandler, First.

“All students are invited to come to the Night of Worship at 6 p.m. for the inaugural concert,” Lind said. “At each concert, the OSWC will sing and lead the congregation in worship, share their stories and present the Gospel.”

Auditions for OSWC began June 29 for all students grades 8-12. “All auditions were done online,” Lind said. “We auditioned for all vocal parts, plus media and tech positions and band positions.”

Lind said “connection” is a major theme for the choir. “First, connecting each person to God through worship and memorization of spiritual truths through the music,” he said.

“Second, music is a great unifier, and students will connect with other students from across the state.”

OSWC is still accepting auditions in all areas.
