Introduction

ust now, saying the heat is on is like saying the moon has no atmosphere – such an understatement. Mind you, it’s still June as I’m typing this so things may have changed by the time you read it. Hopefully not though, as least as far as weekends are concerned. By my reckoning, the last weekend we saw any rain was when I was in Great

Yarmouth enjoying the NSRA Fun Run (turn to p24 for a full report on that) and that was back at the beginning of June. Since then, I’ve enjoyed three weekends of glorious sunshine, with our events pages listing 16 different events that hopefully made the most of that weather. As I write, there’s still one last June weekend to go and that alone offers seven different happenings for hot rodders to enjoy. I’ve mentioned such event congestion in

the past, so there’s no need to go over old ground, though I still wonder why it happens so much. At least the upcoming July weekends aren’t quite so rammed. Make the most of the weather and get out and enjoy your cars. That’s what they were built for after all, and for a refreshing change it most certainly is perfect roadster weather so you’ve no excuse not to. Dave Biggadyke

Blue Ovals only Ford appreciation was top of the bill at this year’s Classic Ford Show, now in its 14th year. Santa Pod Raceway was filled with classic Fords of all ages and models, with thousands of fans making their annual pilgrimage to this special gathering of Blue Ovals. Exhibits ranged from concours restorations through to performance-tuned Fords modified mildly to wildly.

GUIDES AND RESTORATION

The Auto Finesse Show ’n’ Shine saw Steve Smith steal the show by not just winning this year’s coveted Best of Show trophy with his Ford Consul Ute, but also third place honours for his Gasser. The Classic Ford Show is just one of a number of Ford events from the Fast Car Entertainment series, with the next two events exclusively for Ford fans being Ford Fair at Silverstone on Sunday 5 August (www.fordfair.co.uk) and Ford Fest on Sunday 30 September at Santa Pod (www.fordfestshow.co.uk).

The classic vehicle display at Egham Royal Show has grown over the years and now attracts around 100 vehicles each day and the organiser, Douglas Newton, is keen to swell the number of rods and customs within this display. The location is Whitehall Lane, Egham, Surrey TW20 9NW, and the dates are Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 August. The show is open from 10am to 5.30pm each day and the entry fee is £5 per vehicle, including passengers. All classic vehicle display entrants will receive a commemorative brass plaque. Details of the show can be found at www. eghamroyalshow.org.uk and to pre-book a display place email Douglas at tiagol.t21@ btinternet.com, or call 01908 511894.

PROJECTS •

Unless you’ve spent the last few months in solitary confinement, you’ll know that one of our favourite events on the UK drag racing calendar takes place at Santa Pod Raceway on 13-15 July. Dragstalgia takes a step back in drag racing time, so miss it at your peril Full details can be found at www.santapod.co.uk/dragstalgia.php

RIP Tom Drag racing legend Tom ‘The Mongoose’ McEwen passed away aged 81 on 10 June. McEwen was one of cters the most colourful characters in the sport, and competed in numerous classes, but was best remembered for his time in both Funny Car and Top Fuel. Our thoughts go to his friends and family.

Premier time Although it’s now too late to pre-enter this year’s NSRA Hot Rod Supernationals, you can still turn up on the day and pay at the gate to be part of the premier hot rod and custom event in Europe. The weekend programme boasts a cruise, more traders than ever, live music-a-plenty and a huge show ’n’ shine on the Sunday. Oh, then there’s that little matter of Gene Winfield doing a live roof chop during the weekend. Please note that public entry is on the Sunday only, and for full details visit www.nsra.org.uk

Racing the seafront Saturday 1 September is the date for this year’s Brighton National Speed Trials, held on Madeira Drive in Brighton. Around 200 cars and motorbikes will make the timed run down Brighton seafront, ranging from ultra-modern vehicles to prestige classics. Practice runs start at 8.45am, with the first of the timed runs setting off at 11.15am. If you fancy being part of the action, you can download an entry form and view the regulations here: www.brightonandhovemotorclub.co.uk

More old school If you fancy a weekend rod run the way they used to be then the King’s Lynn Kruisers Extravaganza will be right up your street. Held at Walpole St. Andrew, near King’s Lynn (PE14 7JW) over the weekend of 27-29 July, the weekend itinerary includes live music, a cruise and a Sunday show ’n’ shine with a car boot sale. Find out more at www.kingslynnkruisers.co.uk

Supporting the Hall The British Drag Racing Hall of Fame has announced that Lucas Oil Products has agreed to become its headline sponsor. In drag racing, Lucas sponsors several NHRA events and many racers in the US, Europe and Australia. Stuart Bradbury, Chairman of the BDRHoF, commented, “We are very grateful for the support Lucas Oil Products has given to many racers and drag racing tracks and events over the years and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.” The 2018 BDRHoF Gala Awards Dinner is on Saturday 17 November at the Oatlands Park Hotel in Weybridge. Reservations can be made by email to stuart@britishdragracinghof.co.uk, or by calling 01933 279102. Tickets, which include table wine, are £70 each, with the hotel rates £115 for double rooms and £94 for singles, inclusive of breakfast. Ongoing news about the Gala, sponsors and other events in which the BDRHoF is involved is regularly published on the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame website, www.britishdragracinghof.co.uk

Pod cast The latest happenings at the home of UK drag racing - Santa Pod

The organisers of the Mopar Euro Nationals take a liberal view on what constitutes their eponymous brand. If it says ‘Made in the USA’ on the label, they’ll welcome it. Roll up in your Ford, your Chevy or your old Nash Rambler, and you’ll find there’s a place for you at the annual jamboree of four-wheeled Americana, though obviously you can expect to be outnumbered. This year it’s the Mopar Nats’ silver jubilee over the 27-29 July weekend at Santa Pod Raceway – yes, 25 years already! So soon. The biggest muscle car doorslammer event in Europe is a fun event for sure, but there’s some serious business on the bill, too. Round four of the MSA British Drag Racing Championship headlines the competitive show – that means Pro Mods to you and me. And if the most potent door cars in drag racing aren’t enough to whet your appetite for thrills and spills, there’s wild wheelstanding bracket racing by the UK Nostalgia Super Stock and American Super Stock groups, plus a Run What Ya Brung into the bargain for anyone in a Yank who fancies a go on the new concrete drag strip. And if you’ve tyres to spare, you won’t want to miss the annual smokefest known as the Incredible Burnout Contest. Away from the track, there’s a new addition this year – the 1968 Car Corral, celebrating the year in which the American muscle car reached its zenith. There are sure to be ranks of gorgeous cars on display around the venue, with the show ’n’ shine competition grabbing the limelight, replete with a round of the Classic American Car of the Year contest. On top of all this, there are live bands and you can even have your cherished American motor valued by expert US vehicle appraiser, Tony Oksien. So if you have a yen for American muscle machines, but don’t happen to possess one just now, don’t worry. Come along and take a look and a listen anyway. You’ll be just as welcome, and will find more than enough sights and sounds, mechanical and musical, to satisfy the keenest transatlantic speed freak. There is plenty more information about the 25th Mopar Euro Nationals at www.santapod.co.uk/mopar.php. You can book tickets there as well, or by telephoning 01234 782828.

Backing the future At the end of the 2017 season, York Raceway, the northern host of drag racing for the last 40 years, was on the brink of disappearing. The involvement of an automotive component manufacturer on the land, coupled with a lack of resources, made the continuation of York Raceway untenable. However, by 31 December, York Raceway activists achieved the first milestone towards stepping up to the next level by raising a staggering £100,000, proving there is a massive groundswell of support for a prosperous and improving future for York Raceway. It takes more than the opinion of enthusiasts to ensure the viability of York Raceway’s future though. Estimates vary, but there are thought to be around 3,000 vehicles in the UK purpose built for drag racing, and possibly 10,000 street / strip cars, yet currently only one active UK drag strip, its calendar crammed to capacity with drag racing and lifestyle events. Clearly, there is the need for another drag strip, and an improved York Raceway is an ideal solution. In hindsight, it was naïve to think racing would re-commence by Easter 2018, but all is not lost, as Pennine Drag Racing Club chairman, Al Perkins, explains: “Given that a corporation with significant funds has probably made an unrefusable offer to the land owner, we must be very grateful that he is still loyal to the promoters and drag racers, and has categorically stated that provision for the drag strip has been added to the contract. “However, it still leaves much to do, and much to achieve, to get the venue up to 21st century specification, and to ensure continuity for drag racing in the future.” Marc Smith of PDRC added, “We can certainly confirm that the future of York Raceway, the club and the racers, are in a good place and we look forward to telling you more, just as soon as the circumstances allow. The PDRC Committee is now fully up to speed on all negotiations and is happy with the planned progress.” To keep up to date with developments, search Save York Raceway on Facebook.

Two for one

After the success of No Prep 2 in May this year, which attracted 70 cars and 1,200 spectators, No Prep Nationals 3 takes place at Rockingham Dragstrip on Bank Holiday Monday, 27 August. The format is simple: 1/8th mile, heads up, no prep, flash light start, with no times or speeds recorded. Once again, the 1/8-mile drag strip is the pit road of Rockingham’s super speedway, and No Prep Nationals 3 will feature two classes: No Prep Big Tyre, with a £1,500+ cash win (dependent on a 16-car field), and No Prep Small Tyre (max. 10.5in slick or same in drag radial) with £1,500+ cash win (dependent on a 16-car field). Other than safety requirements, there are no rules, so bring as many cubic inches and as many power adders as you want, as well as whatever kind of grip juice / pimp juice you fancy. You won’t be weighed, just run what ya brung and hope you brung enough. On top of this, there will also be the Monster High Roller Bracket Race, with Portatree timing equipment and a further £1,500 cash prize (dependent on a 32-car field), 100 drift cars on the National Circuit, plus the inaugural Big Oolite Rod and Custom Show on the outer paddock (all concrete hardstanding) and indoor in the Rockingham Exhibit Hall. For race entry details for any classes, email pmdragracing@gmail.com, or call Paul on 07831 650230. For spectator tickets (£10 in advance) visit www.rockingham.co.uk

No cover up A recent posting on a hot rod internet forum questioned the future of CC following the increase in cover price effective from the July issue. By far the majority of responses to the post were supportive, and we thank those who took the time to comment in such a fashion. One response in particular, however, grabbed our attention as it was well written, knowledgeable, truthful and honest. We’re grateful to the author for allowing us to reproduce it here. Ed. Bought my first Custom Car mags (secondhand ones) when I was 14 and seeing things like Moulin Rouge, Humdinger and that nice Danish bird, Helle, draped over a Model Y were what got me into this scene more than anything else. Custom Car is really the only magazine that has consistently represented British customising across the past 50 years and, as far as I’m concerned, it’s far too valuable to lose. Granted, it is overpriced at £4.99 (although I don’t mind paying it for what it is), when Classic American and Street Machine both charge £4.50 and provide a lot more content, but it’s presumably something to do with Kelsey Publishing (who also charge exhibitors £12.50 and punters £19.50 to attend the Bromley Field of Mondeos… oops, Bromley Pageant of Motoring) rather than anyone in CC itself. But if you think it’s a problem, write to CC and hopefully Mr. Biggadyke or someone could take the issue up with one of the suits. Okay, I know how effective that’s likely to be, but it would be a shame

8 CUSTOM CAR AUGUST 2018

if CC went under because, rather than voicing their gripes directly, people chose instead just to have a moan on the internet. I don’t know exactly how Street Machine’s run, but as far as I can tell it’s effectively a one-man band operation and the slightest loss of backing might well mean the end of that. Then if we lose that and CC, we’re stuffed, aren’t we? Of course, it could just move to the internet and make life sooo much easier for everyone… but then what would I read on the bus? I don’t do smart phones and, even if I did, what would be the point? Peering at 70 pages worth of text would soon get painful. Or they could dumb it down for the 21st century and do away with text, just have pictures. But isn’t the beauty of a well-built car, and the work of a good photographer, lost when you have to view the pictures

on a screen the size of a fag packet? What if you want to refer back to something? “Does anyone remember this Consul, think it was featured in the early ’80s?” That’s a quick rummage through the 1980-’85 piles and hopefully something turns up. It would take forever clicking across tabs on a computer, especially a lethargic or temperamental one. What if you just want to physically own your own material? If you have to rely on an app to own something, who really owns it? You’re dependent on the app to view it, so maybe they really own it. You’re also dependent on the makers of your phone / computer to view it, so maybe they really own it. Or maybe no one owns it, because it doesn’t even exist in the physical world!

Kiss me quick! Cruise me slow… Words and pics: Keith Harman Though Hipsville as an event, already in its sixth year and now held at Margate’s Dreamland seafront amusement park, is principally a party weekend for those digging post-rockabilly genres of music, most years have also featured the drive-in Sunday Auto Show. It’s a low key, drive-in, one-day affair, with no particular restrictions on types of car, and Dreamland’s two-storey car park directly adjacent to the venue is easy and convenient, both for the park itself and the various seafront attractions. This year’s Show was sponsored by the House of Wax, as usual plying its wares downstairs in the vintage market, while custom bike builders, Sickboyz Customs, were invited to sponsor the motorcycle side

a low key, drive-in, one-day affair of the show, though unfortunately, not that many bikes turned up on the day. The car show attendees were mostly local Kent cars, along with a small contingent that drove out from South London for the day, including members of the Detonators CC. All entrants to the car show received wristbands entitling them to free entry to Dreamland, and free rides throughout the park too, an extra charge only being levied to listen to the bands playing in the main hall upstairs. As is the norm at Hipsville, any prize giving or ceremony is limited to the random distribution of coloured ‘Hipsville Cool’ rosettes placed on cars deemed worthy of recognition, or simply just for being ‘cool’. Cool cars with the sun blazing down on a traditional English seaside resort. For some, it doesn’t get much better than that. CC

Nice ’49 Chevy Fleetline with added sun visor and Appletons for that mild custom look.

Duncan Robertson was down for the weekend in his bagged ’54 Chevy, originally built by Roadhouse Motor Co.

Tim Wadsworth from London certainly gets around in his mild custom Merc. Soon after this he was off to Europe in it, including taking in the Kustom Kulture Forever event in Germany.

first This very tidy ’59 Apache was one of the in to arrive at the show. ’58-59’s differ only . badge the placement and style of the wing Shades on! The ’flake on Paul Dawkins’ awesome Kripfink F-100 panel van was sparkling like a sparkly thing in the Margate sunshine.

We can’t help thinking the shot gun scoop is a little out of place on this neat Model A truck, especially with its otherwise trad’ look.

Good to see Chris Cade’s Model A sedan

again, still looking as fresh as ever.

We’re not sure, but wonder if this is a ’55-’56 Chevy cab swap onto a later frame as it has a modern bed and wheels. It arrived early but didn’t stay long.

Screen Hipsville is open to all types of cool stuff, and these two Split Vans turned up, representing the wide world of custom VWs.

You can’t tell from the pic but this Barracuda is RHD, maybe one of the few Plymouth sold new through UK Chrysler dealers in ’67 / ’68?

Tidy ’46 sedan appears all stock, apart from the subtle louvres in the bonnet and the missing stone guards on the rear wings.

This GMC was looking good with what appeared to be original paint over American s. The one-year-only, one-piece ’screen denotes it’s a ’54, the last year of this shape.

Imps of any persuasion are rare customs. We spied this one with trad’ custom features and a bare metal finish at Wheels Day this year, and here it was again.

If there had been a prize for long ’58 Caddy would have won hand est car at Hipsville, this s down, but it took home a ‘Hipsville Cool’ rosette instead.

Although bikes were welcome at Hipsville this year, only a handful turned up, including these two foreign-registered Harleys.

on Here’s one of those ’32 Ford hot rod or street rod comparis pictures that rock up from time to time. You probably already know your favourite style.

Black Country cruising Words: DB Pics: Bob and April Sheppard This year’s NSRA Pre-’49 Weekend was held over the early May Bank Holiday weekend in the heart of England, not far from Birmingham. Base for the cruisers was Wroxall Abbey Spa Hotel in Warwickshire, an ideal location from which to visit some of the many varied attractions the locale has to offer. Friday was a chilled out arrival day, perfect for making the most of the spa or swimming pool. Saturday was more energetic, though, with a 9am rendezvous in the car park in readiness for the cruise

Around 20 vehicles attended throughout the weekend to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, around 40 miles away. Later on, organisers Bob and April Sheppard arranged a 1940’s-themed evening with music, games and a quiz. Sunday saw a drive out to the Severn Valley Railway in Kidderminster, whilst Monday’s destination was the Wythall Transport Museum. Around 20 vehicles attended throughout the weekend, with all occupants saying what a great time they had. CC

Roth at the Ritz Words and pics: Andy Willsheer Amelia Island, situated in the north east corner of Florida, plays host to a concours d’elegance that began shortly before the millennium and is the brainchild of Bill Warner, avid photographer, race fan and entrepreneur. The charitable affair has grown over time and this year’s affair was reckoned to be one of the best, even though the scheduled four-day deal was reduced to three due to an inhospitable weather forecast for the Sunday. Held in the manicured surroundings of the swish Ritz-Carlton Hotel, invitees park their vehicles on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia, where no less than 125 judges scrutinise some 305 entries and decide winners in the numerous

the late, irrepressible customiser extraordinaire, Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth categories. Many of the exhibits are valued into six figures and beyond, having been restored to the nth degree, but one of this year’s featured attractions drew as much, if not more, attention than any of them. Sourced largely from the collection of Beau Boeckmann, vice president of Galpin Motors and president of Galpin Auto Sports, a selection of the wild, wonderful and wacky vehicles built by the late, irrepressible customiser extraordinaire, Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth, were on display. They looked a little incongruous amidst the more conventional cars and motorcycles on hand, but the buzz from attendees who took the opportunity to examine the grouping proved how popular they were. Here’s hoping for further similar exhibits at Amelia in the future... CC

Properly Cornish Words: Graham Norris Pics: Angela Flamank and Penny Tingey Proper Cornish Cruisers is a small group of family and friends who get together annually with other enthusiasts they have met and formed friendships with from clubs around the country for a long weekend of cruising, chatting and hot rodding. One of the lunchtime stops was at Harlyn Bay, near Padstow …

a very welcome new generation of independent young rodders days. Who needs the Cup Final or a royal wedding when the sun is shining and you’ve got hot rods to play with? Whilst some cars are local to Cornwall, others came from Devon and Hampshire, with one even travelling over from the Isle of Wight. This year brought with it a very welcome new generation of independent young rodders, the youngest being 18-year-old Jake Gardiner who drove over from Hampshire in his customised VW. This was our fifth weekender, not as a club as such, more a group of friends who meet up regularly to cruise out. And when you live in Cornwall, there is no shortage of fabulous places to cruise to. T

he NSRA Fun Run returned to Great Yarmouth over the first weekend in June, and produced exactly what the name implies – fun, and plenty of it. Lessons had been learnt from staging the event at the Racecourse for the first time last year, and the layout was tweaked and the programme timings adjusted accordingly. The net result was an action-packed weekend with smiles-a-plenty. For those wishing to visit Great Yarmouth’s attractions, Fun Run participants could jump on the seafront road train for a free ride there and back on both the Friday and Saturday. Music sessions from Acoustic Amy could be found in the bar over Friday lunchtime, while at 6pm a Graffiti-style informal evening cruise had been organised. The day then finished off with a disco and live music in the Victory Bar. Tot rod fun trials were planned for the Saturday morning, but that turned out to be somewhat of a non-event, basically because no tot rods turned up. The grown-ups cruise in the early afternoon was a different story altogether and, despite the weather turning a bit sour, was enjoyed by all. More live music

It didn’t detract from the proceedings, though, and had completely disappeared come prizze giving. Top job b NSRA people, we really enjoyed the week kend and most definitely had plenty of fun. We e don’t know if the Fun Run will be returning g to Great Yarmouth next year but, to some exttent the location is irrelevant, as long as the fun n factor remains. Praise must also go to the weekend participan nts as it is they who really put the Fun into the Run.

the location is irrelevant, as long as the fun factor remains and a disco rounded the day off nicely. The sun shone on the show field on the Sunday as yet more vehicles rolled into the Racecourse facility. Business at the array of trade stands appeared brisk too, whilst John Price entertained on the microphone as he always does. It was then the mist rolled in though, more specifically sea fret clouds as I understand it’s called. Whatever the name, it was a bit surreal to be unable to see from one end of the show field to the other.

We’ll le eave the last words on the weekend to NSRA chair, Sue Ayres. “We were pleased to see that hot rodders came from near and far to enjo oy the Fun Run. There was a great selection of vehicles and some stunning debut carrs. However, one of the main talking points wa as the incredible rolling fog that drifted th hrough the Sunday show field. “While it is fair to say people either love or hate the location, everyone who attended seemed to have fun, and that is what the Fun Run shou uld be about.” CC

Coastal cruising The NSRA kindly supplied the blank canvas for budding pinstripers to try their hand at laying some lines…

…and quite a few people did just that throughout the course

of the weekend.

Two tone ’47 Chevy Stylemaster sedan was an extension to the Golden Chariots Imports trade stand.

A prime example of what to do when you find out the wheels and tyres you’ve just bought are too wide for your car.

We’re sure we’ve seen this Model A sedan before, just not with the flames.

Despite the untimely rain, Saturday’s early afternoon cruise through the countryside was a fun affair, apart from the occasional really nasty puddle that is. Although it crossed into the next county at one point, the secret destination turned out to be just along the coast at Gorleston-on-Sea, where the NSRA had organised privileged seafront parking and Acoustic Amy was strumming out a few tunes. For added entertainment, the cruise route incorporated a quiz, the winners of which were Gail Oldfield and Geoff Caves. After enjoying the delights of Gorleston, cruisers were free to return to the Racecourse or carry on to Great Yarmouth where yet more privileged parking had been sorted. Thanks to Graham Rexon and Andy Mason for helping out with planning it all.

Window lickers Saturday afternoon also saw The Big Lick, which took place at precisely 1.50. Publicised only by word of mouth, this lastminute happening was supported by many – even those driving on the cruise at the appointed time. Winner of The Big Lick Selfie was artist extraordinaire, Ian Guy. Word is this is to become an annual event at the same time of day on 2 June, which next year will be on a Sunday and might just be show day at the Fun Run. Watch this space… Pics: Courtesy NSRA

The Victory Bar was packed with happy, smiley people on Saturday night. Understandable really as both live sets from The All New Blues and Soul Revue were truly excellent.

The great music certainly got people up on their feet and dancing…

…although some seemed to be enjoying themselves a little too much!

The for sale sign in the ’screen ensured this Model A sedan a lot of attention. Word is it didn’t stay on the market for long.

In the feature on Mark Dunn’s ’50 Chevy in the last issue we mentioned its first real outing would be to Great Yarmouth. Well, here’s the evidence it made it there, with barely a hitch. As a bonus, it collected a couple of trophies, too.

Fontucky bound

I

didn’t even know it was on until somebody asked if I was going to the Antique Drags. Well, I went last year and it was good so there was no reason not to go this year, except that it was raining when I woke up. I know it never rains in Southern California, except it does. A quick look at the forecast indicated it would clear up, as it usually does, so it was off to Fontana, known locally as ‘Fontucky’, for the 48th Annual Antique Nationals at the California Speedway – a huge NASCAR track built to hold 122,000 people (though I don’t know if the place has, or ever will be, filled to capacity). The adjacent Auto Club Dragway has had its own issues with just one neighbour complaining about the noise but that all seems quiet now.

It was indeed drizzly, cold and wet when I arrived but the field seemed bigger than last year, as did the spectator count. The organisers bumped the cut off so this year it was open to all pre-’59 vehicles, opening the window for more entrants. Despite allowing the ‘late models’ in, there was a good turnout of banger and Flathead-powered cars, but it’s not exactly exciting drag racing with 20-second ETs and speeds barely breaking 60mph. Nevertheless, fastest of the day was Don Ferguson’s nitro-fuelled, Jimmy-powered, Woody Gilmore dragster with a speed of 170.39mph and an ET of 7.872. It’s just a pity he has nobody to race. The Antique Nats is a good event. I just can’t help feeling that with a bit of work it could be a great event. CC

this year it was open to all pre-’59 vehicles

Now 48 years old, the Antique Nats grew from a bunch of guys racing 4-banger Fords just like this Model A engine with Riley 4-port conversion sport coupe from Red’s Headers. Tom Scardina in the far lane was class runner up with a 22.93 ET at 49.39mph.

I loved this narrow gauge, Dart big block-powered ’36 Chevy coupe from the Straightliners Street Cars. I’m not sure how much the skull in the grille helps.

You can never seem to get enough of straight-axle Willys, and ‘Dirty Ernie’ Harmon’s A/Gas coupe was a blast from the past with its painted headlights and Center Line wheels.

already left the line. Vegas Dave, it’s no good looking over at your opponent, he’s In fairness, it was Dave’s first attempt at drag racing.

It’s hard to find an original ’32 Ford sedan delivery as there was a rear door kit avail able some years ago, but this is a real one of only 400 built. It was owned for many years by John Deats, a wellknown dealer of vintage Ford parts.

I loved this little ‘Mousketeer’ with its wind-up key on the back. The Chrysler / Dodge slant-six (known fondly as the leaning tower of power) engined creation features three SU carbs and is campaigned by Dick and Kaye Sappington.

As ’57 Chevys go, the Miller & Haven’s Bel Air is pretty cool. Driver, Bill Freeman, won Bracket 1 with a .045 reaction time, 10.918 ET and a speed of 122mph. Here’s looking at you babe, and what a cherry ’32 5-window this was. With all the right stuff from whitewal ls and baby moons up to its filled flat black ’shell and perfect stance. Love this.

Big block Chevy-powered ’36 3-windows are another favourite, even when they are 50 shades of grey. Notice the neatly pinched running boards.

Now here’s an interesting ’28-’29 roadster, which ran in Bracket 3. Back Eastststyle fenders, gravel pan, three-piece ali bonnet, white interior and baby blue paint all made it a stand out nostalgic rod.

It might have been powered by the world’s biggest Flathead, but sadly Fred Hultin’s little stackinjected T-bucket took an unscheduled left turn too soon. Such a shame, it was a nice car.

Styled after the famous Jack Calori ’29 on Deuce rails that raced the lakes circa 1947, this recreation was built by Calori’s friend, Billy Crewl. That Lancers club plaque up front is Jack’s original.

Track testing failed to prove if the surfboard aerofoils helped or hindered this taxi in its journey down the quarter mile. It got a little sideways, but the tyres never did break loose.

s a kid in the late 1960s, Ramona, California hot rod builder, Dana Hinkle, used to build plastic model car kits. Back then he used his imagination to create his own interpretations of the 1/25th-scale models he could buy at his local model shop, and that inherent creativity has remained to this day. Maybe becoming involved with cars at such a young age – imagining, working with, holding and building scale model cars was his way of grasping car design. Who knows, but he’s made a successful living out of it, and that has to come from somewhere. The high water mark for car models came in the late 1960s when progressively wilder show rods started featuring impossibly big engines, extreme wheel and tyre combinations and crazy colour schemes, and these were the inspiration for Bully. It was some 11 years ago now that Hinkle got the urge to build a 1960’s-style show rod for real, a car that was to embody all of what he enjoyed about model car building as a youth, but in 1/1 scale.

Getting the Feher

After acquiring a complete, stock 1930 Ford Model A Tudor sedan, he set to his plan. The body was removed and sent to Steve Feher of Steve’s Body Works in San Marcos, CA where it was chopped four inches. In the process, one of Walden Speed Shop’s pre-shaped sheet metal roof sections was incorporated, which spelt an end to the original chicken

a car that was to embody all of what he enjoyed about model car building as a youth wire and fabric roof covering. The shapely 1930 sun visor was also integrated into the body and then brutalised with a hole saw. With a heavy channel in mind to further emphasise the car’s stance and proportions, the wheelarches were cut out and relocated almost up to the waistline, while recessed wheel tubs give space for the monster meats Hinkle had planned. Another Steve, Hansen, of Steve’s Precision Fabrication in Escondido took on the job of creating a double rail tubular chassis for the project from 1.375 x 1.25-inch DOM steel tube. Hansen also

designed and built the bolt-in tubular cowl bracing structure that supports the steering box, a four-point roll bar, the trick suspension pieces and the car’s swoopy exhaust system, most of which have since been chromed.

Mad fabricator

For running gear, a standard I-beam was never going to be quite enough so a six-inch dropped and drilled tube axle was fabricated, which is located by the unusual combination of hairpin radius rods, quarter-elliptic leaf springs and a one-off triangular track locator in the centre. Friction shock absorbers complete the front-end package.

hey, go big or go home, right? At the rear, a fully polished Winters Performance Champ quickchange was employed, located by a triangulated 4-link with custom made J-bars, adjustable coilover shocks and four-piston Wilwood disc brakes with 15-inch diameter drilled and slotted discs. Matching these up front is a further set of Wilwood disc brakes, 11-inch diameter this time, with more four-pot calipers. These sit on Speedway Motors repro ’40 Ford-style spindles. The wheels and tyres were chosen to evoke the look of the Fuel Altereds of old, but brought up to date with modern technology. estimated to produce some 1,200 horsepower tucked into the tubbed body, yet still leaving enough hangin’ out to provide that late ’60’s street ’n’ strip flavour.

The key ingredient in the whole project, though, was always going to be the engine, and Dana had no intention of compromising here. Peer underneath at the back axle and rear suspension and you’ll see this. A polished Winters quickie is the attention grabber, but note the unusual triangulated links and things like the engraved bolt heads on the QA-1 coilover shocks.

This is just one of two mirror image crossmembers that impart further structural rigidity to the frame. The dimple died and chromed panel is a propshaft cover and, if you look through the holes, you’ll see the inside of the prop’ tunnel is also painted and striped.

Sitting proud atop the engine is an 8-71 supercharger from The Blower Shop, Retrotek fuel injection and a Hilborn 4-port scoop. Together with a sniff of gas, the whole lot is estimated to produce some 1,200 horsepower. To handle all that power, a strong transmission was mandatory, so a beefed GM TH400 three-speed auto’ was built up by Tri-City Transmissions in a Reid Racing Super Hydra 400 case. Naturally, the interior of Bully is as custom as the exterior, with a pair of

components have been stripped, polished and plated, or stripped, prepped, masked and painted. It’s truly insane.

Hot diggety Dog

And then we get to the paint, and here things take a step into another dimension. Pete ‘Hot Dog’ Finlan of Hot Dog Kustoms in Temecula, CA was given the responsibility of creating the artwork that would do justice to Dana’s vision. If Finlan’s name rings a bell it’s because he was the head painter all through the West Coast Choppers’ ‘Monster Garage’ era on TV, but that’s by no means his only achievement. He’s also collaborated with Hinkle before on his Gold Rush ’32 pick-up and Xtreme ’69 Dodge Charger. In short, he knows his stuff and knows what his customers want.

Not visible with the body on, here’s the bolt-in cowl structure that supports the Schroeder steering box and the transversemounted Wilwood dual master cylinder.

It may be lacking upholstery and internal finery, and you may have to wear satin overshoes when you get in but if your floorpan and seats looked like this wouldn’t you want to show them off, too?

So much so all Dana shared was that he and his wife, Lorene, liked orange and green and wanted “something insane.” Everything else was left up to the Hot Dog. Wow. Finlan started by gaining inspiration from old magazines and books that covered the 1960’s show car period and then, bringing it all up to date, he started going through the Ditzler Big Flake and PPG Vibrance Collection charts, selecting a wild combination that would, and does, dazzle any onlooker. When asked how he went about applying the incredibly complex paint design, he simply said: “Just start taping and paint it. No drawings, nothing. You go off the shape of the car, that’s the way to do it.” Yeah, that’s what we thought, easy for you to say Hot Dog!

Where those show cars of old often used polished magnesium dragster wheels, in keeping with the rest of the car Dana has opted for modern equivalents – 10-spoke ET Gassers and deep dish, 18-inch Mickey Thomson HR-2s, wrapped in Mickey’s own modern radials with their signature flamed tread pattern. Add in 70-80 hours of pinstriping work on top and this has to be one of the most challenging paint jobs ever featured in CC. C. When the car debuted at last year’s SEMA event, many said the ‘canvas’ the ace paint gunner worked his magic on is almost lost beneath the incredible paint. Certainly, it takes something pretty spectacular to push a blown and injected Hemi into the back seat when a car is first viewed, but says everything about just how spectacular Hot Dog’s handiwork really is. The attention to detail doesn’t stop with the paint, though, the chrome and

just start taping and paint it. No drawings, nothing... polishing work that underpins it all is equally mind bending and, like everything g else, there’s an eye-watering amount of it.. Against all the metalwork, there’s precious little upholstery in Bully, being little more that a steering wheel wrap and battery cover, but the baseball glove stitching on the leather in the latter shows that has been approached with just the same level of extreme. Like many of the top US show car builders, Dana Hinkle may not have built this car entirely himself, but he conceived the concept of Bully, chose the components, did the assembly work – with help from his sons and son-in-law – wired the car and selected the professionals he collaborated with that were able to interpret his concept and turn it into reality.

As with so many parts on the car, the fourport Hilborn injector is reminiscent of those used on old ’60’s show cars, but is a thoroughly modern version with Retrotek ECU-controlled operation. Only the two centre butterflies are functional to make the system a little more, ahem, driveable.

Hinkle is a serious car and truck builder, but also one who likes to have fun, enjoy the car scene and give something back, by having the balls to put his money where his mouth is and create a headturning hot rod like this for others to enjoy, discuss, marvel over and maybe shake their heads a little at as well. He’s not one to dispense advice, but when pushed, he simply had this to say: “You’ve just gotta take your time, you’ve gotta do it right and you don’t gotta get in a hurry. That’s what it takes.” 10 years in fact is what this car took, from initial planning through to completion. You may not necessarily dig it, but you’ve got to admit it’s not the type of rod that can be built from a few clicks on a website! CC

…tthen promptly stripped it to a bare ’sshell and shipped that off to Steve Feher at Steve’s Body Works in San Marcos, California for the metalwork modifications, which started with a four-inch chop.

Not much remains of the original car Dana bought, but we’re sure some traditional rodders benefitted from his decision to go to a gusseted, twin rail tube chassis. Yep, that’s an ali Indy Maxx Hemi block.

A bit further into the construction process, with the body channelled just over the depth of the frame. The new firewall is also in and a custom cowl top welded into position in place of the fuel tank. You get a good view of the unusual front suspension in this shot, too.

Mostly built now, with the roof filled and body in primer, prior to tearing down for paint and extensive detailing work. The extreme angle of the engine and its oversize, Hot Wheels-style nature were all big parts of the car’s concept.

Here’s the completed perimeter frame, togeth er with some of the components. By that rear axle stand is one of the custom made J-bars that locate the rear axle and pick up on the design of the motor mounts.

While the body was away being painted, Dana did the assembly work on the chassis. That’s a GM TH400 three-speed auto’ ’box, but in a Reid Racing Super Hydra 400 case that has a separate bellhousing, removing the need for adapter plates when used with non-GM powerplants.

And here’s the man responsible for the truly insane paintwork on Bully – Pete ‘Hot Dog’ Finlan. Even if you can get your head round the idea (and cost!) of 3,000 man hours in a paint job, trying to work out the intricate layers and the endless amounts of masking involved is enough to drive you insane.

Driving force Buying someone else’s unfinished prroject turned into the realisation of a dream for Trevor Cowell. But it took a lot of work to turn what started as a bit of a nightmare into a happy finish

44 CUSTOM CAR AUGUST 2018

Trevor: “There’s a ton of work in the car, and it’s pretty much bang on as I’d have done it, just simple and straightforward.” On the short list of jobs still to do is a set of brass and chrome side window mouldings, and Lance McCormack will be called upon to create those from scratch.

O

f all the cars on the hot rodders’ hit parade, a chopped ’49’50 Mercury will invariably come close to the top. Even if you’re not into customs per se, there’s just something about them that makes us all go weak at the knees. But the reality is a chopped Merc will remain a dream for most

“and then one da ay I found myself looking at an advert for one, here in the UK. It had been over here a while but wasn’t really a known car. That was part of what attracted me to it.” The 1949 car was bought from American eBay in 2006 as a stock, rolling, engine-less ’shell for just und der $7,000 by Paul Kittle.

the car had been put on the road with… the bare minimum of nothing of us. And while a few more have come out of the woodwork recently, they’re still a prettyy rare old thing g over here. “Like Willys coupes, it was just one of those cars I’d always liked,” says Trevor,

He knew what he e wanted and that was a traditional chopp ped sled, so he imported it and gave the car to Richard Fulton to do the work. Richard beavered away on and off the car for around five years, by which

time it was up and running, chopped, shaved, painted and on the road. But, like all these kinds of projects, there’s often a big difference between on the road and enjoyable on the road.

Sinking feeling

Any chopped car is going to be a compromise, and a black one is always going to get hot inside. So let’s just say afterr sinking a hefty chunk of dough into the project, the experience wasn’t what Paul had hoped for, and so the car was put up for sale. It transpires a lot of people looked at the ad, but Trevor made the call, elicited enoug gh information to go awayy and do some research and decided to take a look with his partner, Nikki. “I took money with

If they don’t, yyou don’t use ’em.” And so he set to work. “There was nothing wrong with any of the work that n had been done, and the more I got into h you look obvious choice for interior trim, but the more Orange ostrich skin vinyl might not be the car. the of nce ambie l overal the lifts really at it, the more it works, and

Shoot the Moon

“When I got there, though, it was a nice surprise. I expected there to be something about it I didn’t like, but there really wasn’t. Well, the Moon stickers on the bottoms of the wings and the raised letter BFG tyres had to go, but other than that… “I knew there were some things I’d be doing, but it was all stuff that’s a bit more up my street.”

In short, the work that had been done was great but the car had been put on the road with, as Trevor put it, “the bare minimum of nothing.” None of the gauges worked, to open the boot you had to get in the car, pull the rear seat down and yank on a cable, it had no heating, no ventilation and no external mirrors. “I drove it home and it was clear immediately why the guy had sold it. It was virtually undriveable – it was hot, noisy, uncomfortable and not enjoyable at all. Apparently, he’d been to Le Mans in it, but I can’t imagine what that must have been like!” Traffic light viewer is another essential piece of kit. Visibility is actually better than you might think, but if you’re front of the queue you won’t see the lights above you.

I’m all about using my cars, and to really enjoy using them they have to work properly the car the more I found was there, it just hadn’t been finished off. The boot lid actually had a solenoid in it and the wiring was all there, all I had to do was wire in a switch, connect it up and no more of that leaning in the car, pulling the seat down nonsense. That alone must have driven him mad.

Blast furnace

“Fitting air con was the biggest thing, though. That was highly necessary. I knew after that first journey I couldn’t live with the car without it. Not because I want my cars to be like modern cars – I don’tt – but it was like driving along with a blast furnace in front of you. I don’t know if it’s the shape of the engine bay, or how low it is, or what, but the heat that came through from the engine was unbearable.” Car has been chopped 4½ inches front and rear with the rear window and b-pillars laid forward. One of the things Trevor really likes about the chop is the rear swage line and rain gutters have all been retained for a more ‘factory’ look.

46 CUSTOM CAR AUGUST 2018

Headlights are now what Trevor refers to as super posh LED ones. They’re certainly a lot brighter than the originals, and draw less current, too. The custom grille is another of those parts Trevor wasn’t 100% sure about initially but now can’t imagine the car without it. “Plus you can put your toast in it,” he grins. A lot of time was also spent re-aligning the bumpers and tucking them in closer to the body.

I like my interiors to look original, not dicked about with, and now everything works as it houlld, even the clock.” sh

One Vintage Air evaporator box, the biggest condenser he could fit in and a compressor and what was already a cool car became a significantly cooler one. This being England, a heater was also on the list, so a small aftermarket electric one went in and now the ambient temperature inside can be controlled whatever the weather outside. A high output 150A alternator was also fitted, mainly because of the electric heater, but also to allow for a bit of sound and light show. “I hate aftermarket gauges and modern radios in classic cars, and gauges that don’t work, so I spent a lot of time

Vinyl tap

The interior trim was complete when he bought the car, but was “like a sea of black vinyl.” Trevor also wasn’t sure about the orange ostrich skin vinyl on the seats,

so took them out and forgot about them while he worked on the rest of the interior, including adding the motherload of sound deadening, insulation and heat reduction materials. “That was something that really needed sorting badly so, once I’d made sure there were no leaks [a job that entailed replacing the sectioned door seals with a new, full size set and “jizzing up” the onepiece rear window rubber], I put in a layer of Dynamat, then foam-backed rubber, then some sort of sponge insulating material, then underlay and then new carpets on top.” Together with ali-backed heat shielding above the exhaust underneath the car, and wrapping the headers to within an inch of their life, Trevor reports “that made all the difference in the world.” After that, he added new windlace, re-purposed a genuine python skin he

FM, iPod, Bluetooth and all that bollocks on that side of things.” Trevor dismantled and reconditioned the original Mercury speedo and the factory radio was sent off to Tadpole Radios in Colchester to be converted to, as Trevor puts it, “FM, iPod, Bluetooth and all that bollocks.” The engine gauges are a triumph. Shortly after spending £400 with Arnold’s Automotive on a set of nice new Classic Instruments clocks, Trevor had them in

At ride height the car sits a touch higher but still looks sinister. Ridetech combined bags / shocks give a nice ride, but Trevor says switching to AirLift 3P digital management was one of the best things he’s done. bought for £30 from an antique shop in Brighton for the door pulls and gearshift gaiter and had Joe at Unique Auto Trimming in Great Bookham, Surrey make some new Bedford Cord door panels. All that remains now of the old black vinyl is the headlining. With all that done, and the old seats cleaned up, he decided he now rather liked them, so they’ve stayed.

Air on a P-string

Mechanically, the only significant alteration Trevor has made to the car was to have Intermotiv in Horsley, Surrey upgrade what was a pretty basic air ride system to AirLift 3P management with ride height sensors. “Before you had to fiddle with switches and you never really knew if the car was level or not from inside. With the new system, you just hit a button and it’s right where you it.” want it.

The stock 350 Chevy had already been rebuilt by Valley Gas Speed Shop and fitted with shorty headers and a stainless exhaust system but, recalling what we said earlier about driveability, Trevor converted it to Holley Sniper fuel injection, but made the mistake of buying the master kit with the integrated swirl pot / fuel pump. “I wasted a lot of time trying to get that to work and ended up taking the float bowl out and putting a return line in anyway so I may as well have not bothered. It’s a clever idea, and I’ve made my peace with it now, but from what I’ve read online I’m clearly not the only one that has had problems with it. “The rest of the kit is just brilliant though, and transformed the way the car drives. It starts on the button, it keeps the idle speed more steady, even when the a/c kicks in, it’s smooth right through the rev range and better on fuel. It’s a no brainer really.” The car has a brand new Turbo 350 crate

gearbox and a fourth gen Camaro 10-bolt rear end, now with a set of motorwayfriendly 2.73 gears, located by a 4-link. Brakes are a combination of Mk3 Granada discs on the rear and BMW discs on the front with an under-floor servo and dual master cylinder.

Fatman Jamming

Suspension-wise, the front end is stock Mercury upper and lower arms and kingpins with Fatman 3-inch dropped spindles, Jamco uprated idler arm and drag link assembly and Ridetech air shocks all round. “It doesn’t drive like Nikki’s Chevy

it’s the experience I was hoping for from a chopped Mercury with a Jag clip, that’s for sure. It’s okay, but it’s one of the areas I’d like to improve. I definitely won’t be putting a front clip in it, but may go to aftermarket tubular A-arms. For now, I’ll just try and dial in what’s there a bit better.” Now that it’s well and truly sorted, what’s it actually like driving a chopped on the next Now have a look at the build pics work has page and you’ll see just how much have a urys Merc ’49 e. alon area this gone into been has one this but ow, three-piece rear wind window. replaced with a single piece 1950

Merc sled in England? “Surprisingly, it’s not claustrophobic. You’ve got to have that little bit of extra vigilance, especially on narrow country lanes and when you’re parking, and there’s a blind spot when you’re turning left. Before though, with no mirrors on it, it was deadly. “I’m 6ft so I had to cut the seat frame

down a bit at the back and adjust the rear squab so I’m looking out of the middle of the window and so it’s comfortable to drive. That also gave me a bit more legroom, which I needed. “I’ve done about 2,000 miles in it now and it’s the experience I was hoping for from a chopped Mercury, whereas before it was dreadful. All the stuff I’ve done just Apparently, they were going to french the tail makes all the stuff that was already lights too, but decided against it. “That might done work. have been a deal breaker for me,” says Trevor. “I used to look at these cars and The only re-chroming work he’s had done is the think I like ’em, but I’ll never have rear light bezels, and those cost £240. Now that it’s sorted, it’s a great car to go to shows in – it’s nice to drive on the motorway, the boot space is good, it’s got a rear seat you can take people in and people seem to love it wherever we go. Yeah, I’m pretty happy with it… now anyway.” CC

The build The inspiration:

Watch the 1986 film Cobra, starring Sylvester Stallone, and it’s easy to see the influences in the finished car. The film car was a ’50 and had a few detail differences, not least the rear lights, but the full shave, black paint, Moon discs and front grille are all similar. Even the BFG Radial T/As that previously had their white letters showing are a nod to the film car.

The sills beneath the doors were the worst areas on the car...

TThe base car was in remarkably good

condition but, as you’d expect, still required some rust repair.

…and the bottoms of the doors themselves.

Plus a section in the closing panel of the boot floor, and a few other small areas such as the rear wings.

Yep, this was a nut and bolt resto

alright, but check out how solid

the original chassis was.

Once the body was completely solid again it was given a coat of black primer prior to the custom modifications being done. Note the damage to the windscreen pillar evident here.

Here’s the front end as it was stock…

…and here’s the front end with the leading corners of the bonnet radiused, the headlights frenched, the indicators deleted and the seams welded and blended in. Quite a difference, huh?

The chop:

But it’s the 41/2-inch roof chop that has the biggest visual impact.

Then begins the laborious task of welding all those cuts back together again, without distorting the metal. Quality of workmanship is evident here in the welds and metal finishing that have been done so far.

And here it is in the early stages, with the b-pillars cut out, the a and c-pillars cut down and the roof repositioned. That's the easy bit…

The b-pillars are back in here, now at a noticeably forward rake. Not every chopped Merc is done this way, but this treatment to the pillars was a key part of the look for Paul and Richard.

It’s around the rear window that things get a lot more complicated. Richard chose to keep the rear window the stock height, just laid down to meet up with the re-profiled roof. Count the pie cuts required, then consider how the internal structure also had to be modified to allow that to happen.

Compared to the rest of the chop, the a-pillars were more straightforward, but still required three cuts to get the angle right, and what appears to be a similar number to the leading edge of the door frames. Then there’s all the internal work, too.

Country life Built from scratch in just seven weeks, this Country Buggy-inspired creation is a metalwork of art

54 CUSTOM CAR AUGUST 2018

S

uch was the success of Volkswagen’s funny looking but hugely competent Kübelwagen and the American Willys Jeep in World War II that in the 1960s various car manufacturers started looking to build similar cheap, reliable, utility vehicles that

vehicle that would go on to become known as the Country Buggy. The car borrowed heavily from the Kübelwagen in its simple, corrugated steel bodywork, but the Australians planned their version to be four-wheel drive and amphibious, too.

They’re so ugly they’re kinda cool, and it looked really easy to build one could be used in rural areas and also, potentially, by the military, should the need ever arise again. The UK had the Mini Moke, the French the Citroën Méhari and, on the other side of the world, then VW Australasia Managing Director, Rudi Herzmer, and engineer Cyril Harcourt, began work on a

Unbeknown to the two, though, Volkswagen Germany was busy with its own civilian version of the Kübel, which would far outstrip the Australian version in sales and longevity, but the go ahead was given to put the Aussie version into production in 1967 under the designation Type 197,

although the name Country Buggy appeared in sales literature from the start. However, the following year production was discontinued, with just 842 Country Buggies built. A further 1,000 or so were assembled from kits, either in Australia or in Singapore, the Philippines and New Zealand, where their no nonsense, go-anywhere capability was revered. They were never officially exported to the UK or America.

Background noise

That short history lesson is just background noise, though, as the car you see here isn’t a Country Buggy at all, but a scratch built one-off by Lloyd Jackson of Deluxe Metalwork in Sudbury, Suffolk (check ’em out on Facebook at Deluxe Metalwork). Here’s how it came about. “I say dumb things and I do dumb

things,” says self-taught metalworker extraordinaire, Lloyd. “I’d just finished a Split Bug and had another to do, but wanted something I could build quickly for the show season. “I started looking round, and kept coming back to the Country Buggy. They’re so ugly they’re kinda cool, and it looked really easy to build one as there’s not a contoured panel on them.”

I wanted it to look like a production car, not just some crazy kit car Now, there are two important words there – quick and easy. Quick is a relative term, especially when it comes to building cars. I’m in awe of anyone that can build a car from scratch in a year, but how about seven weeks? “I’m not the kind of person who will build a car over three years, I like to see things happening… fast. That’s what keeps my motivation going.” Easy is also relative, relative to your level ¡ There’s nothing like a bit of product placement, and nothing like a pair of t-shirts to cut down on the upholstery bills. Comfort definitely came second to fun with this build.

motor turbocharged engine in stock, a mild 1641cc Though Lloyd had a 2110cc fuel injected and fast in it. 70mph an go to want really didn’t “I h. enoug d with twin single choke carbs was deeme enough!” inch off the floor in an upturned skip is fast

of skill and ability with something. When it comes to metalworking, fabrication and welding, Lloyd’s got some impressive skills. So where do you start with a project like this? “It was all built from pictures on the internet…” explains Lloyd. Ah, shades of Eddie Wimble poring over old issues of Rod & Custom. “I know a 185/65-15 tyre is so big so I’d measure pictures on my iPad with a ruler and scale it up from there.”

3D prototype

“ “The idea wasn’t just to copy one though, but to build something that maybe, just b maybe, could trick your eye into thinking it m

might be some sort of prototype. “That’s why we put Split Bus air vents in the sides, and used Split Beetle parts for the interior – you don’t get any of that on a Country Buggy. And everything had to be done as it would have been done in the factory. Starting with the front panel, the body was almost entirely made on a Pullmax machine, with a couple of wooden formers used to make the front wing sections. It looks like it’s all flat sheet, but some panels were run through the wheeling machine first to pre-stretch them before the ribs were put in.

Originals were jacked up with early VW Bus reduction boxes and front trailing arms. Swapping to Beetle underpinnings with a Deluxe-built air ride set up (bags rear, air shocks front), a 35mm body drop and some subtle body mods ensures even worms run for cover when Lloyd approaches.

56 CUSTOM CAR AUGUST 2018

Compare the rear haunches in this shot to those of the genuine Country Buggy on p56 They’re some 30mm deeper. The whole car has a feeling of being beefed up yet, as with all good customs, it’s hard to put your finger on where those changes are until you see it alongside a stock one. With one of these, that isn’t going to happen very often.

people can see how it was built. They put on a coat of epoxy primer, baked that and painted it the following day. But when I saw the colour I hated it.” With Spike and Lloyd being mates,

every part of Lloyd’s version is ribbed, for pleasure

Adding Split Screen Bus louvres to the rear end is an inspired touch, angling them to follow the body an aesthetic one. Not only are they functional, they’re a more refined solution to drawing air into the engine bay.

Before anything was committed to metal, however, a few 8 x 4ft sheets of industrial cardboard were Lloyd’s material of choice. “I made all of one side of the car in cardboard first and propped it up against the floorpan so I could make sure the proportions were right.” It also allowed Lloyd to take some liberties with the design, raising the rear haunches and dropping the leading edges of the front wings, all little tweaks to improve the overall aesthetic. At least as much as it’s possible to improve something so butt ugly even its mother struggles to love it.

Quick fix

“I had to start somewhere, so I started with the front panel. That went alright, so I made the front wings. They were all quite quick to make, so I wondered how quick I could make a firewall, and some front wheel tubs…”

Three or four days later, Lloyd was onto the sides. To put this into context, the build started in the middle of January with the aim of driving it to a show in Belgium in the middle of March. The same year. Okay, so he had a complete air bagged floorpan ready to go, but all the same. As it goes, he missed the self-imposed deadline by about two weeks, but still had the car finished for its debut at The VolksWorld Show toward the end of March, and it was painted twice in that time, too. “Yeah, that was a bit tight,” remembers Lloyd. “All the time I was building it I wanted it satin brown, and I dropped it down to Spike’s Vintage Restorations (www. spikesvintagerestoration.com) late on the Tuesday night, three days before the show. I went back the next morning and helped get it cleaned up and into the booth. “There’s no filler in the car at all as I wanted all the spot welds to be on show so

you can imagine the exchanges that took place between that realisation and the car returning to Lloyd’s workshop on the Thursday evening in its new coat of 1950 VW Beetle Jupiter Grey. “At least I knew I was going to like that colour,” grins Lloyd, “as it’s the colour I did my first Split Bug, and I had a load of paint left over from that.”

Hate male

From there, it was just a matter of bolting the body onto the floorpan, wiring it and fitting the lights, steering column and minimal controls. Obviously there was more to it than that, but there’s not a lot to this

Pop the bonnet and, in traditional Volkswagen fashion, you’ll find a… handmade, brushed aluminium fuel tank. Originals just use a stock Beetle fuel tank.

The real deal

car, as anyone that got in it soon found out. “My wife hated everything about the car. She thought I was off my rocker when I was doing it, and the fact I spent 14 hours a day, six days a week on it for that seven weeks. Then when it was finished she didn’t like the attention it got everywhere we went in it. “Whenever I took any of my mates out in it, it took them about half an hour to stop being scared shitless, thinking they were going to fall out the side. The car sits about an inch off the ground, and alongside a truck on the A14 their tyres come up to the top of the windscreen, and there’s nothing between you and them.” It was for this reason that Lloyd put a lot of thought into the construction of the body. Not just physically how to construct it, but how to give it some structural integrity, and a little bit of side impact protection,

just in case. “It didn’t matter how heavy it is, I just wanted it to be strong, so I made the whole thing out of 1.2mm steel and built two big 40mm box section ladders that run down each side, then go up and over the back and across beneath the dash.”

When VW Germany gave the go-ahead to VW Australasia to put the Country Buggy into production it clearly saw the Australian Outback as its natural home

Diggin’ the ribs

Equally important was the detail. Real Country Buggies are largely flat steel inside whereas every part of Lloyd’s version is ribbed, for pleasure. “Every panel you make you have to think how it’s going to join the next one and how you get the structure into it. The ribs add strength, but I also wanted it to look like a production car, not just some crazy kit car.” That’s why the heater channels are fully functional, with tubular ducting within them for a heating system, why the rear valance is removable, styled after those

Tail lights are from a ’58-’61 Split Bus, while that centre light is from a later Bay Window, fitted with a red lens and now working as a Barndoor-style single brake light. The handmade, Split Beetle-inspired bumpers on this car are just ace. Note originals had the exhaust exiting through the body above the bumper, not below as here

Initial plans for 4WD and amphibious properties were shelved, presumably due to expense

All the air ride equipment, save for the air tank, is contained within the floorpan. The pressure gauge sits in this neatly recessed pod, the wiring and ½-inch air lines run through the central tunnel and the battery and Viair 380c compressor sit in the spaces that would normally be under the rear seat.

found on early VW Buses, and why the bumpers have a shapely furrow that echoes that seen on Split Beetle bumpers. It’s all just a bit more considered than the genuine, Australian-built versions. “In the end, I think there were only two panels I made twice – one because I knew it wasn’t quite right and it would bug me every time I looked at it, the other because I got so carried away making the heater channels that when I’d done one I went straight into the other one and only later realised I was making two of the same side! “I learnt so much building this car. I’m self-taught so every day is a school day and you can’t buy this sort of experience. The Pullmax is just such a wonderful machine. You can make pretty much anything on it, and a lot of what I learnt doing this car I’ve applied to the Split Beetle restorations we’ve done since.”

Quirky cool

“It’s sort of quirky cool, isn’t it?” Lloyd questions as we conclude the interview. “And for my business it was great. Even though it’s dog ugly, it just got so much attention. I don’t think there was a show I took it to where it didn’t win something, even at the [NASC] Nationals. That was pretty cool. “And I had a riot in it as well. It’s worthless really, so I drove the hell out of it. That’s probably why it’s one of the most fun cars I’ve ever had.” It’s recently been sold to a fella in Germany and, would you believe it, put back to stock – or as ‘stock’ as a hand-built one off can ever be. “Yeah, I’m gutted it’s gone,” says Lloyd. “Not because I’m really in love with it or anything, but because I just thought I’d always keep it. I was going to build a proper ’vert-style hood for it, and had it all worked out, but I never got the time to do it.

Lloyd raided his own personal stash of Split Bug goodies for the steering wheel, steering column, gear knob and seats. Ironically, these parts alone are worth way more than the £620 worth of metal the entire body cost!

“It did need it as well, as I got caught out in it a couple of times, once on the way back from the Nationals. It was raining so heavily that I was getting this bow wave in front of me and it was pouring in over the sides. I was kinda laughing at the time, but it wasn’t that much fun.” The other time you’d have seen Lloyd laughing was on the Friday of The VolksWorld Show. “When it was done, I remember us all just standing back and laughing, ‘yeah, we’ve done it.’ It was a good experience, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and friends in what were crazy times.” CC

The build

Once happy with the cardboard mock-up Lloyd set to transferring the shapes into steel. Front panel was the first part to be made. Front wings next, and these are about the only parts that weren’t made on the Pullmax, but over wooden formers.

One of the more complex panels was the front bulkhead, especially getting the angle for the steering column right.

Working backwards, the wheel tubs and front inner panel were made next, all with matching ribs for strength, visual appeal and a production look. Working out how everything would join together was a headache.

It may all look like flat sheet but it’s not lacking in neat detail. All holes were flanged, and the ribs all match throughout the car.

There’s a lot going on here. Rear deck, wheel tubs and crossmembers all tie the back end of the body together. Lloyd went on from here to make a similar rear panel for a Split Beetle but with more curvature and in one single piece. The man sure can work metal.

The engine bay looks exactly like a product of the VW assembly line, and that was the idea all along with this project. The rear valance is removable as on VW buses as it greatly simplifies engine removal and fitting. Note the handmade bumper irons, too.

Inner wings going together. Note use of copper weld-through primer at every join, all of which have been spot welded as they would have been done in the VW factory.

VW heater channels are complex box sections with a tube that runs through them to duct hot air from the heat exchangers in the exhaust system to the cabin area. Lloyd replicated that system here, but in a style befitting the rest of the body. Seven weeks after the first picture was taken, here’s the completed body. That’s impressive going by anybody’s standards. What you can’t see is the 40mm box section ladder frame behind the outer skin that gives it its structural integrity. With all the panels made in 1.2mm steel it takes four people to lift the body.

n our June ’17 issue, the Readers’ Rods feature portrayed a few vehicles owned by Neil Hill and Melanie Henson. One of those was a rat rod pick-up truck the couple had come across at The Last Chance Garage

it. When he bought the pick-up Neil also acquired a ’50 Studebaker and, once he’d sold that on, Mel gave him the nod to spend the money on the International, with the proviso it didn’t get painted yellow. She wanted it red

with the proviso it didn’t get painted yellow in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Having gone through the mechanical side of things, Neil told us it was keeper, and so far he’s remained true to his word. However, he has given it an extensive cosmetic makeover since we last saw

or blue. Looking at the pictures, we’re guessing Neil didn’t get that memo, but we’re assured it all came good in the end. Along with sorting the bodywork, Neil has breathed fresh life into the

engine, made up a new exhaust system with electric cut outs, fitted new glass, installed a stainless steel fuel tank (which came from a narrow boat!), fitted a new front grille, radiator and chrome brake cylinder and servo, as well as adding power steering for good measure. All in, it took Neil a year of his spare time to update the pick-up, though he says much of that time was wasted being messed about by two different paint shops. Oh, and he also managed to find time to play around with a ’53 DeSoto during that time as well. Maybe we’ll re-visit that one another day. CC

In the foreground is the pick-up when Neil first clapped eyes on parked up at a garage in New Mexico.

it,

The pick-up’s running gear includes the front and rear ends from an ’80’s Chevy S10 with, in Neil’s words, “what look like girders from Liverpool docks joining them together. together.”

The cab is from a ’46 International pick-up, whilst Neil fabricated the bed sides and tailgate himself.

The pick-up came ready fitted with a 327 Chevy which Neil tells us, like so many others, came from a Corvette…

…Neil continues: “I have given the engine the full monty, a mild cam and so on and it’s putting out around 350bhp. It’s mated to a TH350 auto’ transmission.”

Neil’s upgrades to the pick-up include a new dash and gauges, an interior re-trim, fresh carpets, door solenoids and electric windows.

’59 Cadillac rear lights double up as reversing sensors. Mind you, by the time you hear the sound of breaking glass it’s too late.

on When he came across the listing for this ’53 DeSoto Powermaster had eBay Neil could instantly see the car’s potential. He struck a deal, a play about with it and ended up with this cool-looking cruiser.

Despite initially hating the colour, Mel soon warmed to the pick-up with Neil telling us, “When we took it out for the first time she was like a mother hen protecting her little ones. She thought I was out of earshot when I heard her saying to everyone ‘that’s my truck’.”

S

taged over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, The Main Event was to be the first real test of Santa Pod’s new concrete track. The Festival of Power at Easter had been pretty much a washout, and the more recent Doorslammers event wasn’t strictly a true test of the new surface, so just how well would it stand up to the heaviest hitters of all?

plenty of PBs and some of the closest racing we’ve ever seen Well, we’re pleased to report there were no major incidents, minimal down time, plenty of PBs and some of the closest racing we’ve ever seen. Even the weather played ball for most of the weekend, although there was some rain on the Friday morning and overnight thunderstorms on Saturday delayed the start on Sunday morning a little whilst the jet drier did its work.

In addition to the baker’s dozen race classes, various exhibition runs were staged throughout the weekend. Roger Goring in the Firestorm jet Funny Car ran a best of 6.2459 / 250.59, but even his slowest run of 6.3461 / 260.55 was still spectacular. Eric Teboul entertained as usual on his rocket bike, crossing the centre line and taking out the 1,000ft markers at one point, and ran a best of 5.2849 / 279.76. Then there was Martin Hill in the Fireforce 5 jet dragster. A storming 5.2014 / 308.33 was followed

by a 5.3286 / 302.16, making the follow up 5.8914 / 274.87 look tame by comparison. Martin upped the ante after that though, laying down the fastest ever jet dragster pass outside of the USA, a 5.1922 at 310.41mph. There’s not much wrong with that strip of concrete then. So, the surface has been proven and new bars have been set. The Pro Mods will be back at the end of June for the Summer Nationals, and we can’t wait to see if those bars will be raised any higher. CC

Modurstang Pro ET With over 40 teams vying for places in the eliminators, competition – and therefore the racing – was understandably close. After three qualifying rounds on the Friday the top three, all on perfect ETs, were Bob Molden (9.65 index) with a 9.6506 / 137.26, Steven Hudson (9.11 index) on a 9.1107 / 140.68 and Wayne Hiscock (9.50 index) at 9.5041 / 139.06. Molden and Hudson clung on to their places on the Saturday but Hiscock was knocked off his rung by Simon Innes (10.61 index) on 10.6133 / 126.52. Come eliminations, Molden and Innes didn’t get past first base but Hudson took the win, as did Hiscock, though he cracked his sump right on the stripe. After round two, Ben Newsome, Karen Stevens, Nick Barnett, Paul Brown, Brian Huxley, Janine Hagen, David Smith and Keith Herbert were the only runners left standing. Brown then saw off Huxley with a 9.0335 / 145.71, Herbert’s 9.6390 / 124.16 was too strong for Newsome, Hagen couldn’t better Smith’s 10.0306 / 115.30 and, with Stevens being a no show, Barnett ran an 11.6891 / 116.82 bye. Barnett and Smith didn’t make it through the next round, so that left Herbert and Brown to face off in the final, the former taking the win with a 9.5316 / 137.27 on a 9.52 dial in.

Gearhead Garage UK Super Pro ET Another strong class with over 40 entrants, all desperate to claim a rung on the qualifying ladder. Although he broke out in the first qualifying round – 6.7729 on a 6.90 index – Mark Flavell came so close to cracking 200mph with a 198.96 terminal. Leap frog was the name of the game on the Friday with the top spots changing hands regularly. By the end of the day, it was Laura Turburville (7.90 index) on top, thanks to a 7.9015 / 167.90. Next came Pel Norman (7.77) with a 7.7726 / 171.07 and Mick Howling (8.48 index) in third place on 8.4827 / 153.69. At close of qualifying on Saturday, nothing had changed at the top, but of note was a PB 7.8995 / 169.15 on a 7.95 dial in by Scott Crookston. Turburville was the only one of the top three to take a win in the first elimination round and she again took the flag in the second round, along with Nick Good, Joe Kellett, Paul Przybyl, Ian Powell, David Evans, Brian Pateman and Oliver Petzold. On the Mondayy, Good’ss 6.8 8711 / 174.98 was, well, too good for Petzold, Turburville lost out to Przybyl’s 7.5567 / 161.88, Evans eliminated Kellett with an 8.0474 / 168.52 and Pateman’s 8.9056 / 143.37 defeated Powell. Good then ran a 6.8897 / 192.19 against Przybyl’s 7.5606 / 177.05, and Evans an 8.1311 / 168.50 against Pateman’s 8.9487 / 145.69. In the final, Evans, in the n, his red light Doomsday Impala, was a little too keen leaving Good to take the win with a 6.8848 / 194.48.

FIA Top Methanol Dennis and Timo Habermann’s first round pairing produced the quickest and fastest side-by-side Top Methanol run of the new era, Dennis on 5.3218 / 270.39 and Timo on 5.3874 / 263.73. Unsurprisingly, nobody could knock them down a peg or two, although Timo had a shot at the top spot with a 5.3653 / 265.11. The other qualifiers were Jonny Lagg on 5.4118 / 261.17, Rod Harrison on 6.0555 / 245.54, Mikael Larsson at 6.2121 (6.4321 / 209.14), Jürgen Nagel on 5.6270 (5.8470 / 247.82) and Sandro Bellio with a 5.6365 (5.8565 / 244.08) – the last three all having a 0.22-second adjustment for running Funny Cars. In eliminations Bellio lost drive, leaving Nagel to take the win with a 5.8161 / 237.32. Lagg’s 5.4244 / 259.65 defeated Harrison’s 5.8031 / 241.25, Timo Habermann ran a 6.8007 / 236.09 against Larsson’s 7.1778 / 177.84 and Dennis Habermann clocked off a 5.3062 / 274.04 bye. In the next round, Nagel’s 6.1509 / 233.94 was no match for Dennis Habermann’s 5.3983 / 269.88, whilst Lagg’s 5.5748 / 262.04 lost out to Timo Habermann’s 5.3144 / 264.21. The all-Habermann final saw Timo take the win by 0.0719 seconds, the clocks stopping at 5.3012 / 267.34 and 5.3766 / 269.88.

The top qualifying spots changed hands with great rapidity over the three days of qualifying in this 8.90 index class. The closing top three were Ronald Huis on 8.9064 / 153.11, Stuart Doignie on 8.9132 / 157.38 and Andrew Williams on 8.9149 / 153.64. This is drag racing, though, and a good qualifying position isn’t always reflected in eliminations, as Williams found out when he fouled in round one. Doignie and Huis were more successful though, the latter running a bye. Both then progressed through round two, with Doignie only having to stage on his bye run, along with Paul Letchford, Martin Curbishly and Leah Kellett. Time was up for Huis though as next time out he couldn’t compete with the 8.9628 / 134.11 from Letchford, whilst Doignie’s 8.9102 / 157.92 overcame a foul from Kellett and Curbishly ran an 8.8860 / 156.90 bye. Letchford benefitted from a bye next time out and ran an 8.8726 / 147.18 bye, with Doignie eliminating Curbishly 8.9301 / 152.16 to 8.9562 / 152.09. Letchford then took the final with an 8.9440 / 136.45 against Doignie’s lose out 9.0069 / 152.17. Stuart Doignie

Niicole e Pa arker was driving the fa amily Nova at Santa Pod for the first time, following a few check out passes at Shakey last season. Her first run netted a break out 10.8118 / 129.93 against the class index of 10.90. She’d hit the nail on the head come the end of qualifying though and bagged fourth spot with a 10.9738 / 119.32. Above her were Leigh Morris on 10.9026 / 120.15, Dave Cherrett on 10.9500 / 88.73 and Karen Stevens on 10.9559 / 133.27, whilst just below was Alan Medley on 11.0785 / 124.23. Parker met her match in the first round of eliminations, though, with Cherrett taking the win thanks to a 10.9298 / 81.68, whilst Morris ran a 10.9357 / 119.50 bye. That just left Stevens and Medley, with the lady taking the win 10.9311 / 125.81 to 11.1092 / 123.88. It didn’t end there though as at the stripe Stevens’ Vega turned hard right and t-boned Medley’s Olds before barrel rolling. Both drivers got themselves out of their cars and seemed okay, but were taken to the medical centre to be checked out. Understandably, Stevens was a no show in the semis, meaning Morris and Cherrett both ran byes. The former then broke out, allowing Cherrett to take the final laurels with a 10.9161 / 86.53. Great balls of fire Running in FIA Top Fuel qualifying on the Sunday, Mikael Kågered got a touch hot under the collar, or maybe under the seat, when a ball of flame appeared from his dragster. Unaware of a split fuel hose, Mikael continued down track leaving a trail of burning fuel behind him, eventually coming to a halt under the gantry. Amazingly, as the car was running ahead of the fire, damage was minimal, and the whole episode certainly kept the photographers on their toes

Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator Street Eliminator newbies, Adam Charnley and Oly Whitehouse, opened their accounts with a 12.6319 / 109.25 and a shut-off 18.9846 / 81.10 respectively. Meanwhile, the more seasoned campaigners got on with the job in hand and Friday ended up with Martin Smith well into the sevens on 7.8242 / 191.31, Joe Stevens on 8.6542 / 129.56 and Graham Smith on 10.0004 / 137.71, whilst Whitehouse ultimately ran within the class cut-off and was on the board with a 12.5436 / 103.27. Saturday and Sunday saw no change to the top three, but Stevens failed to complete the compulsory cruise and therefore didn’t qualify for Monday’s elimination rounds. With Graham Smith fouling, Charnley took a 12.6274 / 111.01 first round win, and Carl Goldsmith enjoyed a 12.4764 / 128.81 bye in Stevens’ absence. Nick Hale’s 9.9108 / 136.13 proved too much for Whitehouse 12.4859 / 98.84 and Martin Smith’s 8.4501 / 175.76 was short shrift for Nigel Hale. Smith then dispensed with Charnley and Hale put paid to Goldsmith’s racing. On paper, the final was Smiths for the taking, and that was just how it panned out, his 7.8298 / 191.32 convincingly defeating Hale’s 9.8495 / 140.71.

The initial top three qualifiers remained unchanged on the Friday: Andy Hone (7.99 index) on 7.6294/ 173.70, Robin Orthodoxou (7.49 index) on 7.1411 / 191.25 and Belinda Bull (7.49 index) on 7.2926 / 188.98. On the Saturday, Hone consolidated his position with a 7.4570 / 182.85, Bull improved with a 7.0758 / 192.06 to move up to second and Tim Mugridge (7.99 index) took over third spot with a 7.5874 / 180.66. Chris Orthodoxou was also running hard and ran a 6.8970 / 212.85 PB on a 7.16 index. The first round of eliminations netted wins for Hone on a bye, Robin Orthodoxou, Mugridge, Rob Smallworth and Bull, who eliminated Chris Orthodoxou despite him running another PB, a 6.7901 / 210.95 break out. The final saw Hone (7.90 index) face up to Robin Orthodoxou (7.49 index), with Hone taking the win, 7.4738 / 180.69 to 7.7651 / 179.88.

With just shy of 20 Pro Mod teams competing there was plenty of action, with a number of PBs run along the way: Wayne Nicholson PB 6.3437 / 223.30, Kev Slyfield PB speed of 228.17mph, but the most buttock clenching was Kim Kristiansen’s PB 6.0011 / 242.53 as his ’chutes failed to deploy and he only just managed to stop the car before entering the field. Freddy Fagerstrom suffered bad tyre shake and was up on three wheels with the passenger door flapping. Then something came off the pickup, so he shut off. Slyfield then ran another PB 6.1006 / 231.38 and Kristiansen improved with a PB 5.940 / 235. At close of play on the Sunday, the top three were Micke Gullqvist on 5.8687 / 244.20, Jimmy Ålund on 5.9120 / 241.24 and Andy Robinson on 5.9255 / 244.08. In the elimination rounds, the last eight standing were Ålund, Gullqvist, David Vegter, Jan Ericsson, Fagerstrom, Norbert Kuno, Kristiansen and d Andyy Robinson. The first four of those made it through to the semis, where Ålund’s 5.9362 / 241.22 dispensed with Ericsson’s 6.0272 / 236.52, and Gullqvist’s 5.9255 / 241.59 was too strong for Vegter’s 6.0177 / 238.71. FIA Top Fuel Dragster Duncan Micallef will go down in history as the first driver to run a three on Santa Pod’s new concrete track, a 3.9203 / 309.97 being his first qualifying pass. Jndia Erbacher was in a new car and her first run wasn't a full pass, but still clocked 4.7496 / 169.20. Antti Horto was also in a new car and his first pass was a lowly 7.2627 / 88.56, but second time out he smashed it with a storming 3.9046 / 303.58. At the end of Sunday’s qualifying sessions, the top three in the nine-car field were Antti Horto from his second run, Liam Jones on 3.9054 / 312.20 and Micallef with his history-making run. In eliminations, Anita Mäkelä defeated Erbacher with a 3.9829 / 284.66, Jones ran a 5.1591 / 246.35 against a shut-off Stefan Gunnarsson, Horto’s 6.7002 / 90.15 was enough to see off Björn Mårtenssondef and Micallef lost power when running against Stig Neergaard, who took the win with a 7.7658 / 153.64. Mäkelä’s 3.9084 / 310.01 then saw off Horto who was suffering mechanical problems, whilst Jones saw red allowing Neergaard to coast through on 10.7840 / 57.46. Terry Gibbs Super Gas Shootout The word close simply doesn’t do qualifying in this class justice, it was literally fag paper thin on numerous occasions, with so many cars running right on the 9.90 class index. After five intense qualifying rounds Simon Gough was on top with a perfect ET 9.9009 / 153.63, and right behind him was Dave Fulton with an equally perfect ET 9.9009 / 152.12. Yup, both had run the same time and Gough was only top as he ran it first. Does qualifying get any closer than that? Third spot went to Andy Harrison on 9.9039 / 143.40. All three progressed through the first round of eliminations, as did Jon Giles, Brian Pateman, Taylor Letchford, Simon Fulton, Stuart Doignie, Gilles Perruchoud and Collin Morrice. Harrison, Giles and Letchford took second round wins, whilst Gough lost out to Simon Fulton and Dave Fulton to Doignie. Harrison then broke out and lost to a 9.9196 / 150.56 from Giles, Letchford’s 9.7389 / 143.97 overcame Fulton and Doignie ran a 9.8962 / 156.30 bye. Giles then ran a bye to go through to the final and Doignie eliminated Letchford. Doignie had definitely saved the best ’til last, though, his 9.9007 / 157.41 perfect ET taking the win with ease.

FIA Pro Stock Bengt Ljungdahl headed up the qualifying table from the off and remained top, thanks to a 6.6457 / 204.43. Stefan Ernryd was close behind with a 6.6646 / 204.42, then Michael Malmgren on 6.6698 / 201.44 and Robin Norén on 6.7159 / 206.09. Enryd then overcame Malmgren, 6.6033 / 210.01 to 6.6879 / 207.05, whilst Ljungdahl red lit and Norén took the win with a PB 6.6525 / 206.26. Norén then ran a 6.7035 / 207.06 in the final, but lost out to Enryd’s 6.6031 / 207.21.

Fuel Funny Car The four-car field swelled its ranks on the Sunday when Birgitte Bremnes joined the fray for her first run of the year. Prior to that, Jason Phelps, in his first outing in Mark and Jackie Hawkins’ FC, fired the motor but was shut off and hadn’t recorded a time. At the end of qualifying, the ladder read Kevin Kent on 4.5291 / 265.62, Steve Ashdown on 5.0413 / 221.22, Birgitte Bremnes on 5.5718 / 152.51 and Kevin Chapman on 5.9115 / 118.71. In eliminations, Bremnes shut off as Ashdown went through with a 5.1126 / 194.60, and Chapman’s blower panel burst as Kent ran a 5.8898 / 148.69. Sadly, Kent was a no show for the final, leaving Ashdown to run a 5.1110 / 155.32 bye.

Remember when... 29 years ago powered, Andy grafte ed in an n XJJ6 fron nt clip and first a 340ci Buick k V8, then na significantly more he ealthyy 455 5ci one. He sectioned (18in), chopped d (5in) and channelled (5in) the body, then mad de the rear end from a combination of ’65 Chevy stepside wings and flat sheet metal before setting the whole thing down over Shelby slot mags and having it painted Audi Grey with hot pink and lime flames. Such is the popularity of pick-ups at the moment that this, backed up by the piece by Dave Fetherston highlighted over on the other page shows it’s no new

from and, to the best of my knowlledge, still co omes frrom the blown small block Chevvy that previously powered Ro ob’s wellknow wn Jago o ’32 5-window. We said in n the feature, “it was Rob’s policy to try and keep the car as sttandard and as subtle as possible.” In truth h, it was far from standard in every are ea, but straigh ht, stock, black bodywork ovver red steels with the right stance will ne ever go out of fashion. In another 30 yearss, we’ll still be e calling this car timeless. Lovve it. Othe er feature cars this month in ncluded the Pro o Sttreet 100E of Paul Styles, which

phenomenon, even if the treatment being meted out to grandpa’s old farm trucks these days is markedly different. Alongside all this wild customisation, Rob Whitwell’s timeless ’40 Ford is the perfect foil. The proof of that pudding is Rob started the build in 1982, and the car still turns heads and gets approving nods today. It’s just one of those cars the haters can’t hate. Jag XJ underpinnings may be considered dated d in some circles today but you don’t see them on a fat-fendered car, and boy do they make ’em drive nice. Power came

was the sequel to the Pro Street Consul of Paul Sttyles. The feature read like a who’s who off the Streatham / Croydon hot rod scene at the time and, while the brutish, all-stee el, 355ci Chevy-powered car was destine ed for the strip, we’ve no do oubt it saw a good few late-night miles on the streetss around CC’s spiritual home. Elsew where this month, we devotted a lot of pages to the hugely popular phenomenon that was Run To The e Sun, which came to be in 1987 and continued to be a major force throughout the 1990s, and be eyond. Ah, such good memo ories.

It was early days for the Homan brothers’ Dream Cars in 1989 9, but the company is still going strong today, albeitt relocated to Surrey.

John Clouston finally gets to hold the keys to the CC giveaway ’56 Chevy vy. y Hey, we only made him wait four months. Whe ere is this car now?

Newq quay ressiden nts are sa aid to o ha ave hated itt, butt repute edly it brrou ughtt more money intto th he town than n any other event beffore or siince, and they can thank CC – notably Keith Seume – for much of that as he was behind it all the way. After that, we took a more sedate drive over to Dream Cars to meet the Homan brothers who were busy bringing as much 1950’s Detroit iron into this country as their customer base would buy, before sitting down for a cup of tea and a fag with Eddie Wimble. A while later, Eddie had poured his heart out and made his feelings on hot rodding in the UK clear. To me, though, the most interesting bits in the piece are Eddie’s comments on himself: “I am not a car person really, I am an artist… who understands engineering, understands cars.” And “I am not interested necessarily in driving a car, I am interested in setting myself problems and overcoming them.” The man’s a troubled genius, no doubt about

that, but he’s never truly lost his love for hot rods or, as he put it, “that visual chemistry or gut fe eeling a car gives you when it is right.” Finally, Keith bro ought us a report on the 1989 Muscle Car Shootout at Sears Point (now Sonoma) Raceway in California, organissed by Gary Meadors and the Goodguys organisation. The cost of running in Top Fuel may have e been getting out of hand at this point but there wa as no shortage of brutal big block k doorslammers, with the quickest running sideby-side deep into the sevens. Woppado indeed. So there you havve it, quite the mixed bag this month, but like kids with the luckyy dip at a school fair, surely no one came away from this issue disa appointed? I know I didn’t.

Remember these? Dave e Fetherstton focussed his lens on two full custo om trucks this month – one insta antly recognisable as a ’66 Ford F-100, the other a litttle harder to decipher. It’s actually a ’77 Chevy and was built by American Rinny Dyar with the sole inten ntion of winning on the ISCA show circuit. And win it did – how ’bout 20 best in shows at 20 0 events? We won’t even bother trying to list the untold modifications in Gold Digger, oth her than to say it’s chopped, has handmade front end sheetmetal and a Plexiglasss bed to show off the ’79 ’V Vette torsion bar rear suspension. Surprisingly, it uses torsion bars up front too,, with a Super Bell dropped

20 best in shows at 20 0 eve ents axle to pu ut the nose in the weeds, and power com mes from a quad carb cross ram-induccted 380ci Chevy. The pain nt is like a House of Kolor ad d, the inte erior trim is gold leather an nd most of the fasteners used on the tru uck were handmade, then 24-carat golld plated!! Yep, like Bully in this issue, it’s way over the top but this kind of mad dness is what it took to win big in the ISCA-sphere in n ’88.

Alo ongside this, Robert Uresti’s Ford looks almo ost munda ane, though it’s anything but. A po otent Pro Streeter, it had 439 cubes of Ford big block k putting out 650bhp and 33-in nch Micke ey Ts on 14 x 15 Welds under its 3--inch wide ened stepside ’arches. It being g the ’80ss, graphics also featured on the outside, but this one had a near stock interrior befittting its Pro Street feel. A very tidy pair of pick-ups, without an essen nce of patina. How refreshing. CC Eddie and Mr. Ed. Legend ds both, and neither has change much h in the interim.

Another one that has changed very little sincce this fea ature is Rob Whitwell’s gorgeous bllown ’40.

Paul Styles’ mean ’n’ moody Pro o Street 100E. One our Kev will remember well for sure.
