Before 2000, there was a street in Nghia Hoa parish (now ward 7, Tan Binh district) named Le Phat Dat (now Dang Lo street), near Chi Hoa church. Not by chance. Mr. Huyen Sy Le Phat Dat is the maternal grandfather of Queen Nam Phuong - the last queen of the Nguyen Dynasty, the wife of King Bao Dai. He was the richest man in old Saigon, when the French arrived. “Nhat Sy, Second Phuong, Tam Xuong, Four Dinh”.

300 year old Ancient Temple in Saigon

According to historical records, in the spring of Giap Ty year (1744), during the reign of Lord Nguyen Phuc Khoat, Giac Lam pagoda was built by lay people Ly Thuy Long and Minh Huong people. Initially, the pagoda was called Son Can Pagoda.

Later, because the temple was located on Cam Son mound, people called the temple Cam Son pagoda. In addition, the pagoda has another name, Cam Dem. Because layman Thuy Long had his own name Cam and worked as a knitter, the locals called him Mr. Cam Dem.

Up to the present time, Giac Lam pagoda has had 3 major restorations. That was in the years 1789 – 1804; 1906-1909; and early 1999.

From 1939-1945, the pagoda was restored. At this time, the pagoda was the shelter of many revolutionary activists.

In 1953, the temple received the Bodhi tree and the jewel of the Buddha’s relics from Sri Lanka and brought it to Long Van Pagoda to be located.

On November 16, 1988, Giac Lam pagoda was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic.
