1.0 PROVENIENCE This project calls for the design of a Kebun Komuniti PLUS within the suburban neighborhood of USJ 2.

Students will generate narratives that respond to the environment and community as user groups within the given context and explore environmental poetics of building enclosure’s design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing various complex typologies of spatial organizations and a variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design should contribute to and merge harmoniously with the environment and site and provide the best of spatial experiences in fostering a sense of community.

PROVENIENCE In my point of view, Kebun Komuniti not only gathers all the farmers or plant lovers to spend their leisure time, whereas It plays a role as a starting point whereby the child or kids are exposed to nature, enjoy care-free childhood, without the restriction of their parents and learn to be independent.

Similar to my design concept “Back to Roots”, let the kids embrace nature since small, indoctrinate them to become more knowledgeable and responsible people by taking care of our mother Earth.

Initial Intention What do roots mean to humans?

- Elderly hoped to trace back the old days (playing around, carefree childhood) - Exposed to nature, not afraid of discovering anything, and understanding the basic common knowledge -That’s the basic form of a human, the origin of human.

Roots Shapes Human Behavior - How the mould is, that's how the cake turns out -

A person's behavior that resembles the guardian.

Roots of the plants best described as it grows down to get water and food Similarly, a roots system means life and growth.

Thus, having similarities of approach able to maintain the good relationship between kids and elderly.

Building roof provide openness towards the surroundings and are able to facilitate the stack effect effectively.

Water Feature | Artificial Pond The pond is located at the center part of the building which collects all the water harvested through the drainage around the site. There is a filtration tank to filter out the contaminants before entering the pond.

The partition and walls of the building are mostly equipped with louvers and openings to facilitate the wind flow sideways.

Different height of the levels splits the air flows to ventilate all the spaces.

2.0 WEAVING THE FLAW, RASA This project calls for an architectural response to design a memory repository in a Chinese Town, Rasa emphasizing a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences, and programmatic requirements. We must provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/ history/ memory/essence of the site and consider the accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.

3.0 1:1 TECTONIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES, ANTHROPOMETRIC, ERGONOMIC EXPLORATION

In a group of 15, we must develop our 1:1 Tectonic through a series of workshops, tests, and investigations involving scaled "study models" using bamboo, exploring architectural elements and principles with anthropometry and ergonomics. The final design will be produced as 1:1 scale assembly and installation work.

Their design should include one banal, common, everyday action and study the beauty in the movement of this commonality.

We must amalgamate our design intention and structure into 1:1 Tectonic with anthropometry and ergonomics.

In a group of fifteen, working with bamboo and supporting material, jute rope, to understand the nature and characteristics of bamboo and how it is used in the design. In the process, we have learned about bamboo's life cycle, joints, joinery, and structural quality.

4.0 TREASURE OF SUSTAINABILITY Originally defined as a plot of land made available to an individual for gardening or the growing of food plants, the Architectural Allotment combines requirements for the growing of plants together with seating, shading, and storage will relate to the programmatic requirements. While designing, we must develop an awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design and meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with materials and spaces.

TREASURE of Sustainability Plants play a vital role on achieve nature equilibrium by undergoing the process of growing and pollination.

From the perspective of a human, we should preserve and protect the ecosystem by introducing the Polyculture system in farming. Polyculture takes the idea of companion planting one stage further.

This system promotes organic methods of pest, disease, and weed control that do not reply to human interventions, they did not release pesticides into the environment.

Polycultures take the idea of companion planting one stage further.

Rather than thinking in terms of a primary crop, grown with companion plants or a secondary crop, polyculture planting involves thinking about each growing area as a whole ecosystem.

In a polyculture, several different plants are grown together. Each one is carefully selected to benefit the whole.

Promote organic methods of pest, disease, and weed control that do not rely on human intervention, they do not release pesticides into the environment.

Processes -

The polyculture is composed of mineral accumulating comfrey in raised beds Plants depend upon combined or fixed forms of nitrogen, such as ammonia and nitrate which is essential nutrient for plant growth and development. (produced by legume) Thus, nitrogen fixation provides a valuable biological source of an essential fertilizer.

Create an Environmental Friendly Yet Organic Ecosystem of a Small Scale Community

Design Intention Repetition of the wooden frame structure gives the users a visual experience of walking deep into a forest that consists of a variety of plants.

Polyculture planting is proposed which allows the plants to produce and absorb the nutrients among each other to achieve a more organic ecosystem.

Facilitate the Relationship Between Human Being with Ecosystem in a Sustainable Approach

Design Intention The Pivot panel not only acts as a shading device for the plants, but it also provides different functions for the users to experience.

For instance, the panel could be opened when the allotment works as an exhibition space or closed when it transforms into a meeting and discussion place to indoctrinate the users in different age groups to preserve nature in a sustainable way.

5.0 ADAPTABLE HOUSE This year 2020 could be concluded as a very unfortunate year; since January, Australia facing the critical bushfire disaster, roughly 25.5 million acres, has burned and caused many peoples and animals to lose their shelter; followed by the coronavirus outbreak which resulted in many economical, death and daily routine being heavily interrupted. This phenomenon seemed like it the time to give our lovely earth a warm hug and try to spread some positive message to the world. Although this module was conducted using virtual calls, yet we are still able to communicate and tackle the coronavirus pandemic issue by joining the pandemic architecture competition organized by ARCHISEARCH.gr &THE Design Ambassador, Germany.

Adaptable

House

When Covid-19 strikes Malaysia, all individuals were forced to stay home and have social distancing because of the movement control order. Because of that, it impacted our daily life and affected us mentally and emotionally due to the lack of social interaction, especially for the B40 community in our country. B40 is the Bottom 40% (B40) in the income group. They are considered as households that earn a household average income of RM3,000 and below in 2014. They are greatly infected because of their financial issues and the limitation of spaces in their home, which causes a lot of unnecessary stress.

Individuals that were categorized under B40 usually live in low-cost flats. These flats are small, (700sqft) so there are insufficient spaces which also affect their productivity in working or studying. Other than that, because of the inflexible layout, there is a lack of privacy in their own home. Thus, we decided to redesign the layout of the house that meets the minimum requirements of Malaysia Housing Development People’s Housing Program (PPR) Rules and Regulations, which is 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 kitchen, 1 area of drying clothes, living room and dining room, while considering the flexibility of their living space.

By considering a flexible layout, we look into the design concept which is adaptability. Adaptability is a design characteristic embodies spatial, structural, and service strategies which allow the physical artifact a level of malleability in response to changing operational parameters over time. The design of adaptable is understood through the three concepts which are generality, flexibility, and elasticity.

By looking into generality, we came out with a floor plan layout that is physically fixed but socially adaptable. So, we choose to focus on designing a built environment that supports both stability in respect to long-term community interests and change in respect to individual preferences. So, to allow greater flexibility and change over time within the house, we will have to allow for a plethora of living arrangements. Families live in their dwellings for a long period, since they lack the economic power to change their dwellings to a bigger or more adequate one. So, we can allow the residents to satisfy their spatial needs by making some alterations to their existing dwellings. With the use of sliding doors instead of commercial doors, some spaces can be opened up to utilize for different purposes for multi-generation of people and various family sizes.
