FROM THE EDITOR Each month as I finish the Banksia Bulletin and sit down to write my little speil from the editor, I say to myself ‘don’t talk about the weather, don’t talk about the weather, don’t talk about the weather’. But mate, how can you not?

I’m going to describe this sublime time of year with one of everyone’s (my?) fav romcom quotes from the 2000 hit, Miss Congeniality. Mr Fields, the pageant host asks the blonde Cheryl Frasier (aka Miss Rhode Island) “Describe your perfect date”. Cheryl replies “That’s a tough one. I’d have to say April 25th. Because it’s not too hot and not too cold. All you need is a light jacket”.

Boom. Miss Congeniality ftw* again!

And how right she was with such a beautiful April 25th for an Anzac Day service (and cheeky mid-week Public Holiday) this year. Speaking of Public Holidays, I love a day off as much as the next lazy Aussie, but they sure have made April just fly on by. It now almost being May means that A THIRD of the year is already gone. No wonder I feel so tired.

I want to take a quick sec here to talk about social media, if you don’t mind? I’ve been saddened to hear numerous people jumping off the Facebook band wagon lately simply due to the amount of garbage that seems to infiltrate our news feeds. Fair call though, I get it, it’s frustrating. So I’m just going to give a quick s/o (shout out) to a few locally run Facebook pages that are creating some super great content and encourage y’all to check them out: Quairading Ladies Hockey Club, Quairading Football Club, Quairading Library, Primaries Quairading, Quairading Pub and Quairading Earthmoving. This is by no means a definitive list, or a plug for these businesses, just a big kudos from me to these people for creating content and promoting communication in our brilliant community.

If you think that’s a bunch of hoo-haa, at least enjoy the snaps in ‘Tagged around town’ just a few pages in and get on board the hashtag #quairading on your social platform of choice. This is a brilliant way to show off how good life in the regions, and in particular Quairading is to both travellers and locals alike!

As always, I hope you thoroughly enjoy this month’s Banksia Bulletin.

ANZAC DAY: The RSL would like to sincerely thank all those that helped in any way to make the ANZAC INVITATION TO LUNCH: An invitation is extended to service a very successful one. A special thanks to those all Community Members to lunch at the Golf Club on who made the wreaths and laid them. the Annual Golf Charity Day on Friday the 19th May. From 12 noon a lunch of soup, sandwiches and sweets RED CARD FOX SHOOT: Following the recent fox is served for a cost of $10. There will be raffles and a shoot, the LCDC is donating $5 per head for foxes and stall with cakes , preserves and other goodies!! Funds cats to the RFDS. HACC CENTRE BASED DAY CENTRE: Held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. On the 2nd Thursday we will have an out of town outing going to various restaurants, cafes and places of interest, museums etc.

Sometimes just for some personal shopping. The 4th Thursdays will be held at the CRC with various activities, games, the odd movie day with lunch provided, give us your suggestions and ideas, we are always looking for new things to do. Anyone who has been assessed for HACC can attend on these days and we look forward to new people joining us. THE CWA SECOND HAND CLOTHING SHOP: Is still running on the weekends from 10.30am to 1.30pm on both days. We are selling large bags of clothing for $5.00 a time, as much as you can fit in the bag! MEDICAL PRACTICE PRESCRIPTION WARNING – ALL PRESCRIPTIONS WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT WILL REQUIRE 48 HOURS NOTICE We will not issue a prescription if Doctor has requested you attend for a review of your medication.

If we are fully booked with no available appointments we will not be able to issue a prescription.

If Doctor is called away to an emergency or is not in attendance, we will not be able to issue a prescription.

All prescriptions issued without an appointment will attract a fee.

It is your responsibility to monitor the amount of medication you have left. It is not the responsibility of the Doctor, Pharmacist, Hospital or our Reception staff to know when you are running out.

The only way to avoid being told we cannot issue your script is to make an appointment or ring up and request a script well before you run out. DO NOT wait until the last week of your tablets before deciding to order more because you may be disappointed when we cannot provide you with a repeat prescription or an appointment.

Keep track of the amount of meds you have left and allow plenty of time to come and see Doctor or order your script over the phone.

FLU VACCINE CLINICS ARE NOW AVAILABLE. Please ring us for an appointment.

Eligibility for the free National Immunisation Program are; All persons aged 65 years or older All pregnant women All aboriginal Australians aged 15years and older All children aged six months to younger than five years All individuals with medical conditions that can predispose them to severe disease if they become infected with influenza Please remember the Flu Clinics are strictly for the purpose of the immunisation. This is because we have a large number of patients attending for the same purpose and we need to keep the vaccine on ice. If you would like to ask the Doctor anything else, please speak with reception and we will book another appointment for you.

SHINGLES VACCINE “Zostavax” is now available. This is a National Immunisation Program and available under Commonwealth Government Funding. Eligibility is for all patients 70-79 years of age. If you would like to participate in this Program and receive the shingles vaccine, please contact us for an appointment.

If you are outside the Government Funded age bracket, you can still have The “Zostavax” immunisation. You will need to see Doctor and request a prescription. Once Quairading Pharmacy advises you your vaccine has arrived, let us know and we will organise a time for you to see Jess. Please note you will not pay for your visits to the practice if the only reason you are seeing Doctor is for the prescription. The pharmacy will advise you of the cost of the vaccine.

SALMON PASTA FOR ONE Ingredients: 90g spaghetti or other dried pasta ½ cup frozen peas 100g smoked salmon cut into pieces 1 tablespoon grated parmesan 1 tablespoon olive oil Dill and basil leaves, chopped (optional) 1 handful or rocket or baby spinach METHOD: 1.

Cook pasta according to packet directions. Drain.

Microwave peas for 2 minutes or until cooked through. Drain.

Toss pasta with salmon, peas and herbs (if using) NOTE: This dish is also delicious with pan-fried fresh salmon, tinned salmon or tuna or shredded chicken.

Nutrition per serve: Energy 1576kJ, Carbohydrate 59.0g, Fat 26.4g, Sat Fat 6.6g, Fibre 6.8g, sodium 400mg.

YOGA & MASSAGE Are you interested in participating in regular Yoga sessions in Quairading, or booking in a relaxing massage? From the success of the Health & Wellness event held at the CRC on the 8th April we’re hoping to organise Nina McGellin, a Massage and Yoga Therapist based in Bruce Rock to visit the CRC on a regular basis.

DOES YOUR CLUB OR BUSINESS HAVE UNCLAIMED MONEY? A quick search on the Australian Securities and Investments Commission shows over $1000 in unclaimed money with Quairading addresses.

Unclaimed money is money from lost bank accounts, shares, investments and life insurance policies. This money becomes lost when you move house and forget to update your details with a financial institution or company.

Unclaimed money received by ASIC is transferred to the Commonwealth of Australia Consolidated Revenue Fund but is available to be claimed at any time by the rightful owner and there is no time limit on claims.

Bank accounts become unclaimed after 7 years if the account is inactive (no deposits or withdrawals). Life insurance policies become unclaimed 7 years after the policy matures and is not claimed.

DEBATING THE HOT TOPICS FOR NATIONAL YOUTH WEEK

National Youth Week is the single largest celebration of young people on the Australian youth calendar with events and activities running all over the country. This year National Youth Week ran from 31st March – 9th April.

As would be expected, the students were sceptical at the beginning. That all changed when Katie shared the nugget of truth that if you learn the “how-tos” of debating and put them into practice – you just might win an argument at home with Mum and Dad! By the end of the hour long session, all students willingly had their turn at talking in front of the class and coming up with affirmative and negative arguments on various topics. On Tuesday 4th April, a cosy crowd of parents, teachers, students and community members gathered in the BER room at QDHS to spectate the three debates. All the students excelled and delivered confident and well considered arguments (it was a tough day for the adjudicators!).

Congratulations and thank you to each and every student who got up and gave it a go! There are so many people working hard behind the scenes to make sure that our Quairading kids have access to as many extra curricular activities as possible and it’s just the cherry on top to see young people grab these opportunities, put themselves out there and grow with the experience.

HEALTHY & WELL! We certainly will have more chance now, of being healthy and well, after attending the fabulous Health & Wellness Day at the Quairading CRC on Saturday 8th April.

The enthusiasm shown for smoothies made by riding the Blender Bike was contagious and some of the combinations of ingredients showed great imagination. They were all delicious!

The range of professions represented by the guest speakers included: Naturopathy, Exercise Physiology, Nursing, Pharmacology, Personal Training, Yoga & Massage Three of these professionals live right here in Quairading with us and the other three presenters were from Kellerberrin, Pingelly and Bruce Rock. It’s fantastic to know we have these experts in their field out in the Wheatbelt. All of the presentations provided excellent information and much food for thought.

Keen interest was shown in Debbie Pym returning to conduct a Fermentation Workshop and conduct private consultations in her role as a Naturopath. Frankie Haslam from Wheatbelt Exercise Physiology Clinic is more than happy to become a regular visitor and we’d all love the lovely Nina McGellin to come back anytime to teach us more about yoga and administer a relaxation or deep tissue massage. Feeling better yet?

Our local Pharmacist, EJ; Medical Centre Practice Nurse, Jess; and Empowered Fitness Personal Trainer, Caitlin; all look forward to catching up with everyone, anytime they need some information or guidance.

NEWS FROM DAVI...

I have arrived in Perth in January and I have been enjoying a lot the city. Perth is a very interesting and beautiful place, it still amazes me how the beaches are clean and preserved even though they are in a big city.

Things here are quite different from Quairading, I am glad to be back in the city but I do miss the farms and the community, I don’t feel as connected to the city as I did in Quairading.

School is also a big change, I have been attending to Shenton College which is massive, it’s much bigger than my school in Brazil and I still get a bit lost in the campus.

I went to Sydney just before leaving Quairading and it was amazing, I watched the fireworks from the opera house, went to Blue Mountains and did a few tours around Sydney. It was great to spend some time with the other exchange students and experience a little bit of the east coast.

I go back home in the 5th of July and I can’t believe that my time in Australia has passed so quick, it feels like it was yesterday that I arrived in the airport. I wish I could go back in time and experience everything again.

Soon I will leave for the North-West Safari and I am really excited for that. I’m going to visit fantastic places like Karijini, Monkey Mia and Coral Bay. I can’t wait for it, I’m sure it will be one of the best moments of my exchange.

but when we find a fabulous pair of jeans online and you have to pay in US Dollars, what determines the exchange rate between the two currencies, which ultimately determines if you have a bargain on your hands or not? (excluding shipping... bloody shipping).

Our Australian Dollar is a floating exchange rate- which is a short way of saying the rate I am 1000% sure I am not the only female in the Quairading area that can write something at which people can buy and sell our dollar we should all know about, so come on ladies- depends on the demand and supply of it. It really is a thing of beauty and a simple and submit an article so I can be lazy and not write one next month OR submit a topic idea; effective way to keep our economy in check. it can be about literally anything.

Some may remember a time where $1 Australian Dollar bought $1 American DollarSo in the absence of any other willing some fancy people call this 'parity'. That got me thinking- how much do we know about the Australian Dollar? Eye roll momentSo why can our Aussie Dollar buy $1 American of course we all know how to spend our Dollar one minute and then just $0.75 nation's currency (perhaps a little too American dollars the next? After all a girl well!?)... needs her cheap jeans!

Remember when I said our exchange rate is floating? When we have lots of Australian goods or services to sell, the demand for our Aussie dollar goes up and so does the value of it compared to the US Dollar. When our two currencies were at parity it was during a time where investors were a bit ify about the American economy (global financial crisis) and they took their money out of investments there, bought Australian dollars and invested in Australian markets- this new increased demand for Australian dollars drove up the value of our exchange rate. In any one day there are millions of dollars that move in and out of our currency for a variety of reasons (to invest in our markets, to buy our resources, other goods and/or services) and at any second of the day the price is constantly fluctuating- when demand for our dollar is high the price rises and when demand is low the price goes down.

Sadly no, whilst we might buy a few pairs of sneaky jeans ('these old things' as I say to my husband whilst hiding the tags) or go on the odd vacation- the reality is as a community we actually sell more internationally than we buy. When our dollar is at parity American products are cheap to us but similarly Australian products become more expensive to international buyers. So when a grain buyer is sitting in his office deciding where to buy his next shipment of wheat from, our Australian wheat is much more expensive than that of the American farmers.

There are billions of dollars (primarily from Asian markets) that search the world’s markets looking for reasonable, safe returnsthe movement of which effects how cheap our American jeans are or how competitive our Australian wheat is. The next time the RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) meets and announces a cash rate change keep an eye on the exchange rate. Remember the cash rate does not really impact the rate we pay for our home loans but investors use it as a marker. If the RBA comes out and says they are reducing the cash rate because they are concerned about low economic activity then often Asian investors will take this as a cue of low interest rates to come and move their 39 Banksia Bulletin May 2017

So if you are a budding investor start reading the RBA statement they put out after each monthly meeting- it can give you an idea of what they are concerned or happy with and you can make informed investment decisions.

I have absolutely not covered all the things that affect the value of our Aussie dollar (I've run out of time because my tractor is nearly fixed) but why not do your own research and find out more about it? It really is interesting and not as difficult as the finance-y people like to make it sound... after all if we know about this stuff and realise it's not super hard to understand - they will be out of a job!

But in the meantime, celebrate the floating Aussie dollar and buy some jeans!

As part of this 102nd ANZAC Day commemoration, I’ve been invited to recount a journey undertaken by my son Warrick and I to Egypt and Turkey to honour all Australian servicemen and servicewomen and to find the grave of a fallen relative.

The journey began when I was given a letter years ago, written by my granddad's brother Private 462 Tom Sullivan to his sister, my Great Aunty Bell in NSW, while he was camped at the base of the Giza pyramids in Egypt.

After writing the letter, Tom sailed with the 1st Brigade AIF and went ashore at ANZAC Cove on 25th April 1915.

An infantryman, Tom fought at Walker's Ridge, Russell's Top, Quinn's Post and other battle sites on the Gallipoli Peninsula before being wounded at Lone Pine in 1915. Records show he was hit by nine pieces of shrapnel. He returned to the firing line until his health eventually broke down and he was evacuated to Cairo where he died of his wounds on 11 March 1916.

In 2012, after extensive research, my son and I travelled to the city of Alexandria where Tom landed with the first fleet of the Australian Imperial Force after they’d sailed from Albany.

They later made the train journey south to Cairo for further training.

While we were in the region, we took the opportunity to travel along the North African coast towards Libya to El Alamein in honour of some nowdeceased old friends who fought Rommel's Afrika Korps there during the Western Desert Campaign.

In the Allied cemetery at El Alamein, we tracked down the grave of Victoria Cross recipient Arthur Gurney who once lived at Day Dawn near Cue, in Western Australia. I see his memorial each time I pass through Cue. Eventually arriving back in Cairo, we travelled to the old part of the city in search of Tom's final resting place. We had with us Tom's letter, his war records and a photo of his brother, great-uncle Ernest of the 5th Light Horse, kneeling next to Tom's grave in 1916.

The inscription on the cross at that time read: ‘In Loving Memory of Thomas Joseph Sullivan. Erected by his comrades’. It says a lot about the mateship shared by Australians.

After making enquiries with local people and checking various maps, we found Tom's grave in a beautifully-kept Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery settled quietly within high stone walls, and somehow seemingly in another world from the dust and bustle of Coptic Cairo outside.

We placed flowers on Tom’s grave and stood there, with a lot going through our minds, in the exact place his brother Ernest did in 1916. An unforgettable and moving experience.

After eventually leaving Tom’s grave, we went on to visit the site of the old Mena military camp alongside the Giza Pyramids, where he wrote the letter all those years ago.

While we were still in Egypt, we visited all the wellknown sites. The political situation at the time was volatile, but we were careful and avoided any serious problems. Clopping along the back streets in horse-drawn carts, and bartering with the locals, I was reminded of the stories told to me by old Diggers who sowed the seeds of our Australian larrikin culture while they were based there during the two world wars. We didn’t let the old Diggers down; we gave plenty of Australian cheek and got up to our fair share of mischief. I’m sure the locals will remember us for all the right reasons. And long may the Australian larrikin live.

Leaving Egypt, we flew to Istanbul, then drove down to the Gallipoli Peninsula.

The tourist season was finished, and we had the peninsula virtually to ourselves while we walked the battlefields for the next couple of days, quietly taking in the battle sites and endless cemeteries from Anzac Cove up to The Nek and down to Cape Helles, including all the places Tom fought alongside

his mates and where he was wounded at Lone Pine.

It would take a cold heart not to be affected while walking in the beautiful clear water of the beaches, or looking out from the hills, or standing in the nowsilent trenches as the barbed-wire rusts and the trenches slowly fill as time goes on - shrouding the horrors our ANZACs and their worthy enemy endured. A profound experience and a time for deep reflection and respect.

Most of those young men were in their twenties, some even younger, and taking into account what they were asked to do and what they sacrificed, it’s impossible for me to find words worthy of them.

We’ll never ever take it for granted that we were fortunate enough to undertake the journey to Egypt and Gallipoli and, as my fellow Australians, I’d like to try to capture and share a part of it with you.

We were walking through the beautifully-kept grounds of Shrapnel Valley Cemetery. It was a perfect day and there wasn’t a sound when we came across the final resting place of a young infantryman of the Australian 2nd Battalion. The inscription on the young soldier’s gravestone read as follows: ‘Tread gently on the green grass sod. A mother’s love lies here.’

Standing there beside my own son, it brought life into immediate perspective. Sometimes, when I think I'm having a rough day, I remember the ANZACs and the people who waited and prayed for them to come home safely, and I’m reminded how lucky I am.

We came away from our journey with similar feelings: We’d achieved what we set out to achieve and we’d been reminded how fortunate and proud we are to be Australian. We’d also been reminded that life shouldn't be taken for granted. It really is what we make it.

In closing, I’d like to take the liberty of saying something on behalf of all of us here, to all Australians, past and present, who have served our country in times of conflict. It’s what my mother said to her brothers when they came home from New Guinea. It’s just something ordinary and simple, but it comes from the heart.

‘Thank you for what you’ve done for us.’

WARRIOR WELLBEING ARTICLE Effective Listening Listening is a vital part of communication and often we may be accused of not listening.

While hearing is an involuntary, physical act, listening requires much more. Basically it is hearing and combining psychological involvement with the person who is talking.

True listening requires concentration and energy, setting aside our own thoughts and agendas and also not making judgements or evaluations.

Effective listening involves the following:1.

VERBAL MESSAGES – attention to the words used 2.

PARAVERBAL MESSAGES- attention to how they are said 3.

NONVERBAL MESSAGES-the body language of the speaker.

Some basic principles for effective listening that will help the speaker feel listened to:  Stop talking - don’t talk, listen to what they are saying, do not interrupt, talk over them or finish their sentences for them. Men in particular are fixers, we want to jump in with our best solutions when all that is wanted is for us to just listen.  Prepare to listen - clearing your mind of all the other thoughts that can easily distract you helps to concentrate on the speaker.  Encourage the speaker - nodding, maintaining eye contact (without staring) or words helps the speaker to feel at ease and encourages them to continue and shows you are interested.  Focus - remove distractions like TV or other noises. A relaxed environment will help.  Empathise - be open minded. Let go of preconceived ideas which helps to empathise with the speaker.

Acknowledge a different point pf view using statements like “I can understand how you may feel that way but this is how I feel about ……”  Patience - allow the speaker to formulate what it is they want to say. A pause of any length doesn’t mean the

speaker has finished. Sometimes they may be having difficulty expressing their thoughts. Let them continue in their own time without interrupting.

Avoid prejudice - it can be easy to become irritated by the persons mannerisms like stuttering, accent, constant fidgeting or pacing while talking. Everyone has a different way of speaking. Concentrate on what is being said and try to ignore the style of delivery.

Be reflective – re-stating the speaker’s words into your own words seeks to clarify what was said and also shows you are listening and are interested.

Reflecting how they may be feeling also does the same ie. “I can see you are frustrated about………” Summarizing the conversation in your own words.

Watch for the non-verbals - noticing inconsistencies between the verbal and non-verbal messages. Body language can reveal more than words, you may be listening to someone articulating that all is well but his body language of gritted teeth or tears welling in his eyes tells a different story.

When people talk, listen completely.

Sometimes just listening effectively is what is required without jumping in to solve a problem.
