From the Editor
September was a doozy! I always thought “doozy” meant bad, or like a flop, but I was recently delighted to learn it actually means “something outstanding or unique of its kind”. Yes, as obsessed with the English language as I am (and I am), I’ve got many blind spots.
Most winter sports wrapped up some teams winning finals (shoutout Bullettees #5peat), some not (respectfully, no shout outs here). Peak visitor season hit as the wildflowers came into full bloom and the paddocks of canola dropped their yellow, and this past week has been a big reminder that summer is of course on its way once more.
Two local events we hope we can maintain perfect spring weather for next week are our Spring Picnic @ Toapin Weir on Tuesday 4th and of course the Ag Society’s, Quairading Ag Show on Saturday 8th!
The Spring Picnic is the last event in our Good Grub Social Club free lunch series and we encourage absolutely anyone who’s interested in getting out of the house, sharing a meal and chatting with others to come along. Beautiful picnic lunch packs will be catered by Flavour Town Catering and we’ll provide delish mocktails, some picnic rugs, good tunes and a lawn game or two - so you can just BYO camp chair and sunscreen! Oh and good shoes if you fancy a scramble to the top of the rock! Conveniently (strategically!) it’s school holidays too, so kids of all ages are of course welcome too! Please RSVP to the Quairading CRC by email, call, visit or message via Facebook or Instagram so we can make sure there’s enough food!
On Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th we’re also hosting a Heavy Vehicle Pilot’s Licence course. If this is something you know you should have (because you’re escorting agricultural equipment of a certain size on certain roads) please get in touch and get registered ASAP. A couple more names on the list for this one would be great.
Big congrats in advance to the Quairading Ag Society committee on the upcoming 101st show. I’m very much looking forward to attending my first show day post-retirement from the committee, and in fact my first ever as an adult attendee!
See you in the show bag line! Or the donut line, or Dad’s Bar line!

“
Friends of Kalkarni” FOK Meeting 20th September 2022 @ 1.30pm
We had a very busy meeting last Tuesday, held at Kathy Bassett’s residence with a good turnout. We normally meet on the 2nd Tuesday of every second month but due to our busy lifestyles we had to change this one.
Talma as President opened the meeting and welcomed everyone, Kathy read the minutes of the last meeting then went on to the Reports and General Business.
The Town Xmas Party was discussed to be held on the 8th December 2022 which every year we have a group attend from Kalkarni Baptist Care. Over the last financial year we have purchased gardening equipment, activity items, Christmas presents, Mothers and Fathers Day presents which we all thoroughly enjoy purchasing and presenting to Kalkarni.
At the Closing of the Meeting we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea provided by all and some light hearted conversation and some a enjoyable walk around Kathy’s Garden to finish the afternoon off.
If you would like to join and be involved in the Friends of Kalkarni please call Talma 0407892067, Kathy 0418321218 or Gail 0456226674, you will be most welcome.
Our next meeting will be on 8th November 2022 @ 1.30pm.

PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT
Kwirrading Koort Community Park
Summary:
We have recently had Brown McAllister Surveyors on site pegging out finishing levels for the foot path, location and alignment of play equipment, and location of both ablution block and picnic area. The Water Corp have installed a water meter allowing water to be available on site, this will allow for the completion of irrigation design and the installation of services shortly. This moves our project from an empty block to a construction site and will start to see more progress over the coming weeks and months. Over the coming weeks the works department will be moving earth and adding fill to level the site, once this is completed we will be able to begin the installation of underground services.
Procurement:
We are in discussions with suppliers and contractors in regards to supply issues and lead times as we try and lock away some of the bigger contracts. We are currently finalising our procurement process for an electrical contractor and play equipment installer and continue discussions for others. We will receive our irrigation design over the coming weeks and will be able to begin procurement on the irrigation installation.
Purchases:
In the last month we have purchase orders in place for the furniture (benches, picnic tables etc), ablution block structure and fixtures, and deep sewer connection.
Utilities:
A water meter has been connected and potable water is now available on site. The deep sewer connection cannot be completed until December due current commitments with the contractors however we are currently investigating ways to continue progress on our side of the project and making the necessary connections to the sewer once their side of works are completed. Once an electrical contractor has been appointed we will be able to begin discussions with Western Power in regards to having power connected to site. We have two out of the three electrician quotes with the third supplier booked for a site visit in the coming week.
Schedule:
While we work towards a December completion, workloads with contractors and supply issues with suppliers are proving to make this difficult. We are working closely with contractors and suppliers to try and continue progressing with the project with minimal delays. The project team are currently working on a works schedule that will indicate milestones and when we plan to achieve them which we will report to the next Council meeting.

Thanks from a visitor
My wife Lynn and I arrived in Quairading about midday on 8 September for two nights staying at the Quairading Hotel. The main purpose of our visit was to try and find any information on my Grandparents who arrived and married in Quairading after emigrating from the UK.
Our room was not ready at the Hotel so we walked down the road for a coffee and a bite to eat. On the way back stopped into the Garden shop to have a look. Talked to Donna explained why we were in Quairading and she loaned me a book on Quairading then made a phone call. “Go to the Church at 4pm and someone will meet you there”. We met Beth and Kevin Simpson. Within minutes I was looking at the marriage certificate of my grandparents. I was absolutely thrilled. We had a cuppa in the vestry and Kevin took us to the site of the original St Faith’s Church in Avon Street.
Next day I returned the book to Donna and she introduced me to the Trove website. Donna had found the newspaper article covering my Grandparents wedding, named the bridesmaid and best man and where the reception was held. Unfortunately, the heat became too much for them and a few years later they left for NZ. Donna found another newspaper covering the ‘going away’ party.
My heartfelt thanks to Donna, Beth and Kevin and Quairading community for opening doors to the information we were looking for and more.
Kind Regards
John and Lynn Bushell Greytown, New Zealand

Concert @ St Faith’s
On November 18th Robert Zielinski will be performing a concert of music from Ireland, Scotland and the Shetland Islands in the wonderful acoustic of St Faith's Anglican church.
Rob learnt by ear in Perth from Irish fiddle players Sean Doherty (Co Mayo) and Mick Doherty (Co Donegal). Mick came from a long line of travelling fiddle players, storytellers and tinsmiths from Donegal
At seventeen Rob moved to Ireland spending the following fourteen years living on the West Coast, immersing himself in the music of the older generation of traditional musicians. In 2000 Rob won Ireland's Michael Coleman Traditional Fiddle Player of the Year Award.
Rob performs on a violin he made and now dedicates his time to his compositions largely inspired by the Great South region of Western Australia.
Doors open 6.30. Concert 7 9pm. Tickets $20 on the door. www.robertzielinskimusic.com

REED Quairading
At REED Quairading this month the children have been busy enjoying the new resources and toys we have had come in. They especially liked the new bubble machine. We have been doing experiences like playdoh so the children can express their creativity and playing outdoors so the children can develop their skills such as climbing, balancing and running.
Our staff will be participating in Culture training in October so we can extend on our knowledge and bring more culture related experiences to the centre.
Next month, we will be focussing on nature and respecting living things, with the children planting their own seeds and helping them grow.
We are still taking donations for both SAFE and A1 Dog rescue of food, blankets and anything else dog and cat related. There is a basket located on the verandah here at 3 Murphy Street. Thank you to families and community members who have already donated, your generosity is very much appreciated.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt
Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm
September was another beautiful month for our gardens and especially for weeds but I’m not so much complaining as plotting my revenge on those terrible backbreakers. Next year I will get to them earlier before their roots become so strong it takes two hands to pull them up. This year all the weeds will go towards weed teas, compost building and those with seeds are buried deep right in the garden where they will go to feed the earth worms. But enough about weeds, I hope you are all enjoying your roses, sweet peas and spring annuals which brighten even the gloomiest of days. The October meeting of the QGLG will be held in the CWA hall on the 28th at 10am. Also I would like to remind everyone about the open gardens in York the information is as follows The York Open Garden Day will be held on Sunday, 16th October from 10am 3pm. There will be 5 private gardens open for inspection with vendors/stalls in each garden. There will be Devonshire Teas available for purchase in 2 of the gardens and a sausage sizzle in another 1. Entry is a gold coin donation to each garden and a map of the gardens will be available from The York Visitor Centre. Also if you care to order lunch for the day it can be pre ordered from a local café, ‘Gather York’ on 0455 670 868.
Plant of the Month This month I would like to highlight the self seeders. You know those plants that once sown they will come up year after year. Now I know that sometimes you might wonder just how many seeds one little Nemesia can possibly have or how far can a poppy seed travel or how come if you had planted that Sea Lavender Statice in that bare dry spot it wouldn’t be growing so well. However, looking at my wonderful field of paper daisies or my garden bed full to the brim with Californian Poppies I’m in awe of their eagerness to not only survive but in fact to thrive against all the odds. Last year I saw in a garden magazine a lovely bed of Cornflowers and Queen Ann’s Lace and I thought I had just the spot for them. I carefully sowed them in two trays and was very pleased when almost all the seeds came up. I patted myself on the back and thought what a good job I had done. They were planted out in due course. When they eventually flowered it was totally underwhelming and I thought ‘well I won’t be doing that again’. I needn’t have worried they have done that all for me by themselves and this year they will put on a much better show. Some plants are not as prolific as the ones mentioned above but quietly set one or two seeds per season. One such plant is the Ballota, a beautiful grey green small leaved shrub that grows to about sixty centimeters in a ball shape. In summer it produces tiny pink flowers. In autumn close to the mother plant can be found just one or two baby plants which can be moved quite easily. This year after such a wet winter I’ve also found the French Lavender has been self seeding. So many treasures to share or transplant! The other good thing about these self seeding annuals is that they are all easy to pull out if they dare to come up in the wrong place.
It’s time to
Sow Summer vegetables and flowering plants should be mostly in by now; not necessarily in the ground where they will grow but in pots. All the small seeded plants like tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, basil and salad vegetables should already have been sown early last month and the larger seeds like borlotti beans, cucumbers, all the melons, zucchini and pumpkins which were sown towards the middle
of last month should be putting on their second leaves. But don’t despair if you didn’t get to put them in there is still time especially because the nights have still been quite chilly.
Plant Unless you are prepared to really pamper any shrubs you plant now it’s probably not a good idea to put them into the garden at this late stage. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy any shrubs or trees you fall in love with. They can be kept in their pots or even transplanted into larger pots and then kept under shade cloth until next autumn’s planting season starts. They will be stronger and develop very quickly once in the ground. Wait until the soil temperature is about sixteen degrees to plant out summer vegetable and herb seedlings, this should be around mid October.
Harvest At Eaglewood Farm we in the midst of a pea glut with six kilos already in the freezer and more coming. Citrus fruit is still being picked. Today we will be cutting the first of the globe artichokes and the asparagus bed is ramping up with lovely fat spears. Most of the winter veggies have finished but we are still having kale, English spinach, silver beet, parsnips, carrots, celery, spring onions, leeks, snow peas, lettuce and surprisingly capsicums and chillies which normally don’t survive the winter. We are looking forward to the first of the broad beans soon.
Things to do Apart from finishing the weeding October is the month for fertilising just about everything in the garden; from lawns to roses and potted plants both indoors and in the garden. If orchids have been in a sunny position keep an eye on rising temperatures and bring them into the shade before a thirty degree day. Spring flowering roses should be pruned after the flowers have finished. Plum and peach trees which always carry far too many fruits can be thinned out towards the end of October when the fruit is about thumb nail size. Prune native shrubs such a Grevilleas and Bottlebrush after flowering has diminished. If your avocado is flowering keep the water up to it and when fruit has set keep it moist and give it a spray with a sea weed solution to keep strong during the hot summer months. October is the month to go out and be inspired by other gardens in your area so why not visit some open gardens.
The last word Never underestimate the healing power of a quiet moment in the garden.

Oil & Water
Last month’s subject was OIL & WATER. To create our pics for the competition the idea was to mount a glass dish on something like some bricks to lift the dish up about 150 mm. You then fill the dish with some water and then add some kind of oil, swirl the oil with a stick and then take pics of the patterns that get formed. For additional effect you put some kind of coloured light under the dish and you get to take pics that are shown on this page. In 14 years of being in Photo Club this was our best ever subject and I thought every single photo was 100% correct and could not be improved. Here is our reminder if you would like to come to our meetings please come along, just rock up. We meet at 7pm once a month on the 2nd Tuesday. This month at the Quairading CRC Training Room. You can join our facebook page by searching Quairading Photo Club. Next month’s subject is “INDUSTRIAL”.

Warrior Wellbeing Article
Mental Health and Wellbeing; You Can
t Have One Without the Other
Google the word mental health and you’ll find numerous organisations and groups promoting the importance of mental health, but how it is described and the context in which it is discussed can vary significantly. We think understanding the difference between mental health and wellbeing and mental illness is important as this is one area where definitions can become blurred and language may disempower people by putting them in a box.
Mental health and wellbeing encompasses all aspects of our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, so it affects how we feel, think and interact with the world around us. A good definition which encapsulates this is summarised by the World Health Organisation (2007) a state of wellbeing in which an individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. In summary we think that having good mental health is the ability to deal with life’s challenges and changes, maintaining positive relationships, enjoying life and getting the balance right.
Mental illness on the other hand is a health problem that affects how we think, behave and interact therefore significantly affecting our mental health and wellbeing. It is diagnosed according to standardised criteria. Some of the major types of mental illnesses are anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar, personality disorders, and depression. However, what if I was in a period in my life where things were not so great, I’m not coping, and the challenges and changes are starting to become overwhelming? Does this mean I have a mental illness? I think not.
I say this because sometimes it seems in society, we are almost not allowed to feel pain, show weakness, or not cope as this may be interpreted as there being something wrong with us. Unfortunately, the system provides the word depression as an answer for a whole range of situational stressors which occur in society and need to be discussed. We need to normalise a

person’s response during a difficult or abnormal life event and a phrase we coin for times like this is being in a state of Situational Distress.
There are numerous life challenges that come our way that can cause us distress such as separation, illness, injury, trauma, financial worries, grief, adolescence, fatherhood, midlife, change of job, redundancy and transition into retirement. When it comes to our mental health and wellbeing it’s important to remember none of us are exempt from hard knocks! Just as we’re given the vulnerability to experience tragedy, we’re given the human resources to heal and deal with it. As T. Green (2008) states “We don’t get memory erasures, but we’re given stamina, resilience and fortitude to see the world hasn’t stopped.”
What can we do to assist and manage situational distress and get our mental health and wellbeing back into balance?
• Identify our mates (build a support network of people we feel safe to confide in i.e. peer, partner, mentor);
• Program time out from work and normalize the problem;
• Maintain social opportunities, take time to laugh with others;
• Take a break, a holiday, go fishing, try something different, explore our passions and interest;
• Exercise, keep active and maintain a healthy diet (this includes reducing alcohol use);
• Make sure we are getting enough sleep;
• Be willing to talk to the appropriate people i.e. family, mates, work colleagues or a professional (accountant, lawyer, psychologist, helpline or GP).
Maintaining a balance and aiming for positive mental health and wellbeing is something we all need to do, this includes acknowledging that we are all susceptible to the stressors of life. Our health and wellbeing are our responsibility, be proactive, address our distress early and don’t let it get out of hand.

This month in the gospel readings, Jesus continues to tell stories that emphasise the actions needed in following Him. Some of the things He says are hard to understand. Dose He really mean we have to hate our mother and father. I think the meaning is that in all things Jesus must be first no matter the cost. Even going against our loved ones. Then there’s the story of the lost sheep. It seems unreasonable to leave all the sheep in danger to look for one that is lost. It shows how important everybody is and we are to recognised that in every body. The rich man and Lazarus also shows the way we should treat those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Truly Jesus said unless you take up my cross and follow me you cannot be my disciple.
