YOUTH CENTRE

From the Editor

Pending your Banksia Bulletin reading schedule; Merry Christmas or Happy New Year or happy unknown day in between! We’re somewhat running on fumes over here as we limp toward the Christmas break — we’re nearly there!

Quick shoutout and huge thanks to our Quairading CRC team including Sharon Richards, Melanie Mills, Shondelle Stone, Jazz Fussell and Tash Masters for another top notch year, and their ongoing commitment to providing a friendly and quality service to all of our customers and wider community. Thanks also to our volunteer Management Committee (Jo Hayes, Robyn Richards, Bec Wilson, Nicole Grage, Judy O’Hare and Lara Hayes) working quietly in the background to make sure the ship is being steered (mostly) in the right direction.

The survey we’ve been promoting over the last few weeks has returned great results for our CRC. Lots of warm fuzzy comments that I’ve shed multiple happy tears over (doesn’t take much to make me tear up to be honest) and some genuinely helpful comments that will aid us in delivering stuff our community actually wants or needs, next year. As I write, there’s 48 or so hours until we draw a winner of the $200 Quairading Co-op voucher (from complete surveys, with names too) so if COB on Friday 20th December hasn’t passed, get your feedback in. Jump on our website www.quairadingcrc.com.au and scroll down.

We’re taking some extended time off over the festive season. Our last day for the year will be Monday 23rd December, open 9am 4:30pm. We’ll then be closed for two weeks, returning Tuesday 7th January 2025. We’ll also be closed all Mondays through January, but open 9am 4:30pm Tuesday Friday through January otherwise. I’ll be keeping an eye on emails throughout this time so please reach out if you’ve got anything going on that can’t wait for our return on the 7th. While I can’t guarantee we’ll have staff around to help, we can always try.

The Passion Sheet will return on Thursday 9th January (and 16th) and then we’ll be publishing the Banksia Bulletin one week early again, with the deadline being Tuesday 21st January (so I can sneak another week off at the end of Jan sorry not really sorry).

Hot tip: Spotify’s playlist “Outdoor Australian Christmas BBQ”. A very palatable Chrissy playlist that I reckon will even secretly appease the Grinchiest members of your households.

News Update

DECEMBER 2024

A note from the Shire President

Firstly, congratulations to Charlie Colbung on recent recognition for his artwork that represented Quairading in the Local Government ‘Pixels in the Park’ competition. Although not the eventual winner in his category, Charlie’s efforts and talent were rewarded with a commendation from the judges – congratulations Charlie!

I recently had the privilege of attending the final of the Tidy Town Sustainable Communities 2024 Awards, where Quairading was a finalist for the State Title, as well as the categories of Environmental Education and General Appearance. Although we did not win the award in these categories, we were recognized by winning the Vanguard Printing Prize in the General Appearance category.

I was also privileged to attend the School Awards Day and present the All Rounder Award on behalf of the Shire. Congratulations to Trey Faltyn as the 2024 recipient of this award.

The Australia Day Luncheon is our next community event to which you are all invited and will be warmly welcomed. With a Citizenship Ceremony, recognition of a number of individuals and community organisations that contribute to our community, and the announcement of the 2025 Quairading Community Citizen of the Year, this event promises to be an enjoyable event for the community.

On 4th February 2025, the Annual Electors Meeting will be held in the Town Hall. Like this year, there will also be the opportunity for updates on current projects, including the sports precinct, aged residential independent living units, housing projects, as well as the opportunity to ask any question you may have. I look forward to seeing you for this update and Annual Electors Meeting.

In recent weeks, some community concern has been raised about the wheel stops that are in the Town Hall carpark. Following this concern, along with Council discussion, all wheel stops west of the Shire Administration building have now been removed.

In concluding for 2024, and with our common goal of keeping our community safe during the holidays and throughout 2025, the phone number when police are required in a non-urgent capacity or for the reporting of incidents is 131 444.

Also, after closing for the Christmas and New Year break midday on 24th December, the Shire Office, the Works Depot, and the Quairading Medical Practice will reopen for 2025 on Wednesday 2nd January.

I wish you all a very safe and relaxing Christmas and New Year.

Below is a good guide to help you decide who is best to call, depending on the incident.

By following this guide, it will assist in keeping the 000 lines free for life and property threatening emergencies.

Vale Cobber Hadlow

The Quairading Football club was saddened to learn of the recent passing of one of its all-time great players. Eddie “Cobber” Hadlow was a champion of the club for over 25 years and, as well as playing and coaching the club, he also spent several years umpiring in the Avon FA after he retired from playing.

The accompanying photograph shows Eddie in the combined East Avon/Avon football side taken at the Northam carnival just prior the 1959 amalgamation of the two leagues. Cobber is the third player from the right in the middle row. With him are two more young Quairading stars Cliff Collard (fourth from the right in the front row) and Bob Armstrong (second from the right in the front row).

Some of the other players include Craig Baxter, Ken Lally, Ken Fisher and “Bubsey” Grover in the back row. Bevan Gardiner, Abby Denton, Colin Higgs, Brian Philpot, and Bill McClelland are some of the lads in the middle row and Vin O’Meara, Brian Chatfield and Trevor Sweeting are a few of the lads recognised in the front row. Sid Coleman is the trainer on the right.

The photo was taken at the back of the old, now demolished, Northam grandstand and, if you are observant, you will notice the exhibition hall in the background. It’s still there!.

And if you’re an old player from bygone years you may notice the fellow right out the back between Craig Baxter and Ken Lally. I’m sure that’s old Ike the water boiler who kept showers hot for years in the “ new” changerooms at Northam.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

The Battle of Bardia 3rd January – 5th January 1941

On 3 January 1941 at 5.30 am, the 6th Division of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) launched an attack against Bardia, a fortress-village on the Libyan coast near the Egyptian–Libyan border. This was the second battle fought during Operation Compass, the first British military operation of the Western Desert Campaign. At the time, Bardia was being held by the Italian XXIII Corps of about 45,000 soldiers. It was the first battle of the war in which an Australian Army formation took part, the first to be commanded by an Australian and the first to be planned by Australian staff. This was the beginning of Australia’s first major ground campaign in the Second World War. Although Bardia was a baptism of fire for most of the Australians troops, what features in their correspondence is their confidence, determination and impatience after weeks of training in Palestine and Egypt. The Italians had spent a number of years developing Bardia and they considered it impregnable. They had made the terrain inside and outside the wire as bald as a billiard ball and had constructed concrete posts along the wire in two rows – each post being about 300 yards apart. It was impossible to use any cover as there wasn't any. “

On the 5th January, 1941 the Australian 6th Division (16,000 soldiers) under Major Iven Mackay, assaulted the strongly held fortress of Bardia with the assistance of air support, naval gunfire (from the Australian Scrap Iron Flotilla) and under cover of artillery barrage. The 16th Australian Infantry Brigade attacked at dawn from the west, where the defences were known to be weak. Sappers blew gaps in the barbed wire with “Bangalore Torpedoes” and filled in the sides of the anti-tank ditch with picks and shovels. This allowed the infantry and 23 Mathilda 11 tanks to enter the fortress and capture all their objectives. The victory at Bardia enabled the Allied forces to continue the advance into Libya and capture almost all of Cyrenaica, which led to operation “Sonneblume”, German intervention in the fighting in North Africa changing the nature of the war in this theatre.

The Battle of Bardia resulted in the capture of 40,000 Italian prisoners including 4 Generals, at a cost of 130 men killed and 326 wounded as well as large quantities of 462 guns, 130 light and medium tanks, hundreds of machine guns and anti-tank guns, rations, equipment, two field hospitals, 700 trucks and many motor cycles, a few horses and alcohol, all of which the Australians put to good use.

With

Senior Regional Officer for the Goldfields, Kelly O’Donnell. Think before you give – a festive warning

West Aussies are a generous bunch of people, and the festive season often inspires acts of kindness. For some people this means donating food for Christmas hampers, and for others it means opening their wallets to donate to a charity close to their heart.

Sadly, there is a need for vigilance, even during the most joyous time of year. There are unscrupulous people who are out to take advantage of the good will of others.

So how can we ensure our donations are reaching those in need, rather than lining the pockets of scammers?

Scammers may pose as a real charity and target victims via unsolicited emails, text messages and social media posts. The best advice is to ‘practice the pause’ and don’t click on any links. Instead opt for safer methods of donating, such as finding the charity's official website through a search engine or the charity register.

While it is important to identify legitimate collectors for your chosen charity, it is also worth considering if there are additional costs that may be associated with donating via online platforms or collection agencies.

Third-party collectors usually receive a fee for every donation they secure. Online fundraising platforms may also charge a fee for their services, which in some cases can significantly impact on the value of your donation.

Whether you’re approached at your doorstep, in a shopping centre, or over the phone, ask the collector if they are from the licensed charity itself and will they receive your donation in full.

Another benefit of dealing directly with your chosen charity, rather than through third-party collectors, is you avoid exposing your personal or financial details to an additional source.

Protecting your information as much as possible during this time of frequent data breaches will go a long way to stop it falling into the wrong hands.

Consumer Protection encourages people to continue to donate where they can as charitable giving is an important and beneficial part of Christmas.

To verify the legitimacy of a charity or not-for-profit organisation, check if they’re licensed on https://www.consumerprotection.wa.gov.au/list-licensed-charities.

If you think you may have been scammed by a fake charity, there’s no shame in reporting it to us via scamnet.wa.gov.au or call 1300 30 40 54, email consumer@demirs.wa.gov.au.

Rural Aid Article

Another year has occurred and that cliché of’ where did that year go’ is alive and well.

Rural Aid will be closing the office over the Christmas break from the 23/12/24 reopening on 6/1/24.

Thankyou to those I have had the privilege of meeting, working with and being trusted by over the last 12 months.

It is very apparent that each year sees the people in our great rural regions becoming more aware and more proactive in ensuring we better recognise looking after our whole selves, including our mental health. I know we hear a lot about country people having a stigma about talking and seeking help for themselves when not travelling well mentally. But I personally dispute this perception as being a total truth. Yes, there are some who hold a personal negative beliefs about mental health issues, but the majority accept the importance of seeking help and talking issues through. This majority in our region is increasing. This trend is very positive and to those individuals and groups who go out of your way in your own time in, your community, to raise this awareness, my sincere thanks.

The year appears for most to be a good year farming wise. The harvest is going to be longer for a lot of people as the unseasonal rain slows the harvest down. This is causing some frustrations for some people especially those who are not comfortable with what they planned to happen not happening. As individuals we prefer to be in control, being in control enables us to better cope. But there are times when situations out of our control occur such as the rain putting programs behind. In these times it is important to remind yourself of what you can control and what you

Roger Hitchcock

can’t. Where the change of plans has occurred because of a factor outside of your control, such as the weather, you may feel more stressed and frustrated. These emotions are relevant because the rain is frustrating, but remember to pause, recognise you are feeling frustrated. Nothing will be changed or achieved by taking this frustration out on yourself or others unless you can somehow control the weather. What can you do? What is in my control? I can take a break. I can service the machinery, I can empty the chaser bins, I can move those stock.

Christmas day is a day for celebration with family and friends. Remember some are in our towns from overseas or interstate and some have no family. Some are going through a difficult challenging time personally, so reach out and check in.

In my travelling days Christmas was a day away from family but there was always someone in a similar situation who opened their home with what was called an ‘orphans’ party. Great fun day, sometimes a few, sometimes 20 or more got together, bought a plate and drinks and spent the day together. I still smile from the memory of these parties. If you haven’t heard of someone doing this and your on your own then be that host.

Here's wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy New year and a safe well deserved holiday season. In 2025 let’s keep doing what we Rural people do best, lets keep looking out for each other, being there for each other and keep the message that asking for help when your not feeling yourself is a strength, being that help is also a strength.

Thanks for a great 2024.

Special Celebrations

During January we will have the opportunity to celebrate some very important events in the life and mission of Christianity.

• The Epiphany, celebrates by virtue of the arrival of the Wise Men from the East, the fact that Jesus the Messiah for the Jews came to be the Christ for all humanity also.

• Toward the end of the month, we celebrate momentous moments in the lives of two great Apostles: Confession of St Peter and Conversion of St Paul - St Peter magnificently confesses Jesus to be the Messiah/the Christ, and St Paul who as Saul the Pharisee had been a cruel persecutor of those who followed in the Way of Jesus Christ, is miraculously converted on the road to Damascus.

There will be a special Patronal Festival Service in honour of St Paul at 5 p.m. on Sunday, 26th January at St Paul’s Church, Edward’s Crossing. After the service members of the congregation are welcome to adjoin to a local hotel for a meal.

We all have our favourites; our favourite foods, our favourite songs, our favourite make of car. In the same way some Christians don’t mind which church they go to but most like one way of doing church more than another. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t work together. We had a Combined Christmas Carol service on 8th December, put together by Rev Dr Philip Raymont and the Anglican church. Next year another church will put the carol service together but everyone will be welcome.

Jesus prayed that his disciples would love each other. We haven’t always done that but things are getting better. We are learning to work, talk and walk together. One way is by sharing worship services. In January we will be sharing services with St Faith’s Anglican Church. I believe that this has been happening for the last 18 years.

Please note the different times (below) and especially that the 3rd week will be on the Saturday evening instead of the Sunday morning. Please come along. It may not be your favourite way of doing church but seeing others worshipping Jesus might help you to worship Jesus better.
