FROM THE EDITOR Footy’s back! Yay! That means winter must be just around the corner. Which also means it must be time to start working on the winter wardrobe - double yay!

Somewhere between the upcoming Easter break, school holidays and a cheeky mid-week day off for ANZAC Day - we’ve got a few great events lined up!

On Tuesday 4th April, we’re hosting a Public Debate with the high school students from 10am in the BER Room at QDHS. You’re all more than welcome to come along and watch, see the flyer on page 11. Our hotly anticipated Health and Wellness event is on Saturday 8th April from 10am until 2pm, come a have some of those health myths busted and grab a smoothie from the DIY Smoothie Bar —more info on page 13. AND we’re doing a Supermarket Tour at the Co-op with our local Wheatbelt Health Promotion Officer on Tuesday 26th April to help you decipher nutrition labels and understand what you’re buying.

We’ve also got Footy Tipping running again, with weekly cash prizes, end of season prizes and all extra proceeds being donated to the development of the park between the CRC and the Vintage Club. It’s not too late to join either, we’ll just give you the away teams for each round you’ve missed! Just $50 each to enter, give us a call or an email or a visit to register and you can do your tips online OR drop them in the box each week.

Boogie Roos Wheatbelt is also up and running again, lead by Quairading’s very own Caitlin Cowcill! We’ve been lucky enough to secure grant funding to run TEN FREE SESSIONS here at the Quairading CRC. The first session kicked off on Friday 17th March with about 20 happy babies and toddlers (and their Mums of course!) grooving and bopping away for an hour in the lovely Art Space. The next session is Friday 7th April from 9:30am, the next 8 sessions will be advertised there after.

What do you think of the MASSIVE happy, smiling faces in the main street? I’m damn impressed they’re all still there, to be honest. It’s called the Inside Out Project and was a very fun one to organise. Pending more funding sometime in the future, we can add to it, and add to it, and add to it!

One last thing. Something has been totally irking lately. You may call it petty, it’s the use of apostrophes. If you face the daily battle of do-I-or-don’t-I when it comes to the use of the little devils, check out page 32 and sort it out once and for all! Then we can share the delightful feeling of superiority as we all use them properly, and look like well to do members of society together!

SHINGLES VACCINE “Zostavax” is now available. This is a National Immunisation Program and available under Commonwealth Government Funding. Eligibility is for all patients 70-79 years of age. If you would like to participate in this Program and receive the shingles vaccine, please contact us for an appointment.

If you are outside the Government Funded age bracket, you can still have The “Zostavax” immunisation. You will need to see Doctor and request a prescription. Once Quairading Pharmacy advises you your vaccine has arrived, let us know and we will organise a time for you to see Jess.

Please note you will not pay for your visits to the practice if the only reason you are seeing Doctor is for the prescription. The pharmacy will advise you of the cost of the vaccine.

STRANGE BUT TRUE FACTS ABOUT BLADDERS AND BOWELS (continence.org.au) Asparagus in my urine?

Some people can wriggle their ears while others can’t. Some can wink with either eye while others can wink with only one.

These traits are due to genetic differences, which scientists believe is the most likely reason most people’s (but not everybody’s) urine smells strange after eating asparagus.

Further to this, some people can’t detect a change in their urine’s odour after eating asparagus, even when others can. While these peculiarities are still the subject of research, it appears that the two abilities – to smell or to produce the smell – don’t appear to be linked.

The smell is believed to be the result of the breakdown of asparagusic acid into sulphur-containing compounds, such as methanethiol, a compound similar to methane.

WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO … AND GO You shouldn’t wake u more than once overnight to urinate, and ideally, should be able to last six to eight hours.

This is because the body releases antidiuretic hormone (ADH) while we sleep, which slows down the kidney’s production of urine.

Urinating more than once overnight is a condition called nocturia and research suggests that sleep apnoea may contribute to the risk of nocturia by disrupting the production of ADH. Research also shows that when sleep apnoea is effectively treated, nocturia symptoms improve.

Other contributory causes of nocturia include drinking too much fluid close to bedtime, prostate disease, diabetes, heart conditions and some medications.

SAME, SAME, BUT DIFFERENT Regardless of whether you’re drinking extra fluids because of hot weather conditions or because you’re engaged in strenuous activity, you should still only need to go to the toilet between four and six times a day, and no more than once overnight. Your urine output should still total about 1.5-2 litres each day, and remain pale lemon in colour.

This is because the extra fluid you drink is lost through perspiration and water vapour while breathing or panting. If you go less frequently or your urine is darker than pale lemon you’re not drinking enough. If you go more often you may be drinking too much or have an overactive bladder.

Note that certain conditions such as diabetes can cause excessive thirst, and should be investigated.

EASTER RAFFLE & STREET STALL The Little Rainmakers Child Care Centre will be having an Easter Raffle. It would be appreciated if each family could please donate an Easter Egg for our hamper by Friday 17th March.

We are also asking families to donate something for our street stall which will be held on Saturday 8th April.

Donations can be dropped off at the stall on the day.

The raffle will be drawn on the day of the stall.

The money that is raised will be used to purchase new resources for the Children.

The 2017 ANZAC Day Commemorative Service will take place at the War Memorial, commencing at 11am on Tuesday 25th April 2017. At completion of the service, a bring and share social luncheon will take place in the Quairading Club.

Rick Sullivan, a one time resident of Quairading has accepted an invitation to deliver the ANZAC Day address.

In 2012 Rick and his son Warrick followed in the foot steps of Rick’s Great Uncle Tom to find his grave. His Uncle Tom died of wounds in the Gallipoli campaign.

On ANZAC Day (weather permitting) a fly over will take place at 11:30am. It will be undertaken by Avon Valley Flight. A group of ex-RAAF Pilots will be flying ex-RAAF CT4 Training Aircraft. They will honour all ex Quairading Pilots and Air Crew RAAF Members.

2017 has and will be a year in which many 100th and 75th anniversaries will be commemorated. WW1 Western Front Battles such as Bullecourt Passchendaele Ypres and Beersheba in Palestine, just to mention a couple.

Australian units in 1917 were to suffer 76,000 casualties with 22,000 deaths on the Western Front. 75th WW2 Anniversary that would have had an impact in Quairading, at the time was the massacre of Australian nurses that survived the sinking of the Vyner Brooke.

Peggy Farmaner who nursed in Quairading before the War was one of those nurses.

The other 75th anniversary was the fall of Singapore in February 1942. Those that survived the battles would become POWs. Quairading soldiers that were part of the 2/4 machine gun BN would be almost them. Those that did not survive the battles and being a POW would be Quairading’s biggest losses of WW2.

DROUGHT BROKEN In what must be seen as a significant omen ahead of the Scorchers semi-final appearance tonight, WA cricket has broken a 40-year drought by winning the Deaf and Hard of Hearing National Championship on Sunday.

WA restricted Victoria to 143 in the decider, with bowler James Tsakalos taking three wickets in the final over and our batsmen reached the target with eight balls and six wickets to spare.

After taking 3-23 with the ball, Matt Shenton’s 37 runs from 25 balls with the bat proved to be the difference, along with key contributions from Syed Shah Rukh (31) and James Johnston (33 not out).

TOUR DE QUAIRADING, YELLOW GUERNSEYS FOR ALL! On Sunday 19th March, 50 locals (and some visiting friends!) got on their bikes and participated in the inaugural Tour de Quairading as part of Bike Week WA. There were bikes, trikes and scooters galore zipping all over town, checking into ‘pitstops’, completing activities, learning about Quairading all while spending quality time with friends and families.

The Quairading CRC successfully secured funding through WestCycle and the Department of Transport as part of the Bike Week WA program, which helped to cover some event costs. The Shire of Quairading also assisted with in-kind contributions.

Bike Week is WA’s annual celebration of bike riding and aims to promote cycling for both exercise and transport. The feedback from the event has all been super positive and we can’t wait to do it bigger and better next year!

HARRISON’S TRIP TO MELBOURNE

In the middle of last year I did an audition for the Australian Ballet School's (ABS) Interstate Training Programme (ITP), along with a fellow dancer Clare Bradley from Tammin. We both travel to Toodyay Ballet School three times each week for lessons with Miss Lani. Clare and I were successful, and invited to be part of the ITP. Clare's mum Caroline, and my mum Stacie, decided to take us to Melbourne to visit The Primrose Potter Ballet Centre in Southbank, where the Australian Ballet School and where The Australian Ballet Company also rehearse and train. So on Tuesday 14th March we all flew over to stay in Geelong. On Wednesday we drove to Melbourne and were shown around the school, and we were able to do classes in Classical Ballet, Character and Body Conditioning, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. Everybody was so kind to us and helpful. It was so great to see so many boy dancers. I think I saw more boys than girls!

We were also lucky enough to be given four tickets to the dress rehearsal of The Australian Ballet's newest production called 'Faster'. It was made up of three contemporary ballets; Faster - which was a dance about Olympic Sports, Infra - which was a ballet from the Royal Ballet in England, and Squander and Glory - a ballet about movement and the space the body uses. The costumes were all very simple, which is different from traditional ballets, like the Nutcracker, which are very complicated. There was also very little scenery used, mostly different lighting. The music was very interesting, the orchestra played very modern music.

The whole trip was amazing and exciting, and I know I am very lucky to have this opportunity to learn from teachers that teach the best dance students. Hopefully I can be one of them.

I will be going back to Melbourne in July for a specialised Boys dance workshop, and again in January next year for Summer School at the ABS. ^ What a dancer does when waiting for a plane!

Thank you to our outgoing committee members Melanie Mills, Lisa Newick & Kylie Squiers, you have been integral parts to the team ensuring the P&C functions smoothly.

Your P&C is here to give parents an opportunity to learn about the school’s policies and programs; organising ways in which parents can share in shaping and developing school policies; bring parents together to share information and views; assist the school in building positive attitudes to students and their families; help raise funds to provide extra resources.

The following items were approved & discussed at the AGM.  The Interschool Shirts have been approved and we are now awaiting their arrival. Thank you to Rosina Duncan who has worked tirelessly with uniform suppliers to get these done.

Our kids are going to look very smart when representing our school. This is a project fully funded by the P&C.  Canteen will be moved back to a Monday starting Term 2, with an updated menu coming out shortly. If you are willing work in the Canteen please get in touch with Audra or Tanya.  Faction School Shirts will be researched for costing and availability and possibly stocked by our uniform shop. If you are interested in a Faction shirt please watch out for an information sheet from the Uniform shop in the near future. We have committed to fund to the school for  $2000 towards the computer lease  $300 Kindy/Pre Primary cost centre  $800 to the junior Primary cost centres  $2100 has been set aside to assist classes

We will continue to provide catering to Rotary for their Changeover night, Youth Exchange night and Xmas Dinner. We thank Rotary for supporting the P&C and QDHS over the many decades we have worked together. 

Rod, Carrie & Matt, Shondelle & Brendon, Melanie & Todd, Brendon & Jami, Shaun and their Families would sincerely like to thank our family, friends and the Quairading Community for the love and support that has been shown to us all since the sudden passing of our much loved Wife, Mum and Nanna.

Perhaps you sent a lovely card, or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a floral spray, if so, we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words as any friend would say. Perhaps you couldn’t make it, but thought of us in some way. Whatever you have done to console our hearts, we thank you so very much.

So loved, so many memories, so dearly missed, by so many.

Barb Simpson – Eulogy for the Quairading Community Written & Read by Darryl Richards I am extremely honored to be asked to present this Eulogy summarizing the outstanding and remarkable contributions that Barb Simpson has made to the Quairading Community.

On behalf of all community groups I extend our most sincere and deepest sympathies to all her family on Barbs sudden and unexpected departure on Christmas afternoon. The sad news has come as a shock to us all.

Today is the day when the limelight finally gets to shine on Barb.

Barb was a real trooper.

She was a real doer.

She worked so hard to support every organization, sporting club and community group that she, Rod, their children and grandchildren were, and still are involved in.

Barb was involved with many sporting clubs such as The Football Club, Super Rules, Junior Football, Senior Netball, Junior Netball, Swimming Club, PCYC-Gymnastics and Air Rifles, Junior & Senior Basketball, Junior Golf, Senior Cricket, Junior Cricket, Indoor Cricket, Softball, South Caroling Tennis, Wamenusking Tennis, Ballet and Jazz Ballet.

And when I say she was involved that is an understatement!

For every club or organization, for every street stall or meeting, for every busy bee or camp, for every casserole tea or fundraiser, for every cricket match, football game, tennis tournament, swim meet or training session - you could at all times rely on Barb to be there, with a whistle, a bucket load of cut up oranges, lots of tasty food or a boot full of sponge cakes – She did it all and not in halves. When rostered to bring a cake or slice for afternoon tea at football she would bring 5 – no

kidding!!! And what about her famous jelly slice – Yum!!!

This incredible woman was not one for fanfare and so much of what Barb did went under the radar. That is just how she liked it – no fuss, just get on with it. There was no such word as “Can’t”. She had a “We Can Do It and We Will Do It” attitude. What a wonderful determined character.

Barb always found a solution, and quite often it was a simple approach to what appeared to be a difficult situation. She had the innate ability to strip a problem down to determine what really mattered, and then quickly resolve it. This is one of Barbs traits that filtered through in her numerous involvements within our community.

Barbs association with the Quairading School spanned over 5 decades from the 1970’s beginning with Carrie as a Kindy student in 1976. She has been heavily involved on all committees, from Kindy to P&C, Canteen, Rotary Catering, Sports and Interschool Sports, East Avon Winter Carnivals, Year 7 & 10 Camps, P&C Fundraising and Work Experience.

She was crowned the “Queen of the Canteen” after 20 years solid contributions and involvement.

In recent years Barb would also fill in at the last minute at Rotary Catering for parents who did not turn up as helpers to Shondelle and Mel. The recent P&C Fundraiser at Bunnings in Midland saw Barb appear in support of her daughters and grandchildren cooking 1800 sausages in buns!!

Barb attended Year 10 Work Experience in Perth with all her children. In 1992 for Mels Year 10 Work Experience, Barb had baby Shaun in tow.

No job was too difficult, even with a baby present.

One year she volunteered as parent helper, with no children of her own attending. For the whole week Barb cooked meals and packed lunches for all those students, and drove them to their respective jobs and picked them up.

You could say she never "worked" a day in her life, as her job in the Kindy with great colleague and friend Sue Shenton was always full of fun and laughter. She loved the children and her Teachers Aid job so much I'm sure she would volunteer for that as well.

Barb has marked ovals and set up for Quairading School Athletics and Swimming Carnivals. She Coached, Marshaled, and was Chief Starter (with her big voice) at many School and Interschool Swimming Carnivals.

Barb was heavily involved with the Quairading Aquatic Club from the early 1980's until the 2006/2007 Season when Shaun went away to Swanleigh. She constantly played a vital role with swimming trainings and swim meetings either Coaching, Stroke Judging, Marshalling or as Starter. Barb came out of retirement when asked 38 Banksia Bulletin April 2017

to fill in as Swimming Coach for the 2012/2013 season. This is a job she loved and readily accepted when asked - especially as it meant coaching her grandchildren. Barb was still Quairadings current swimming coach. She loved coaching her grandchildren. Even at Rod and Barbs home pool she would give all the children tips to improve their techniques.

Barb insisted all her children and grandchildren attend Vacation Swimming Classes each December at the Quairading Pool. Right up until a couple of weeks ago she hosted her grandsons, Ryan and Rory Jarman who came up from Perth to do swimming lessons at the Quairading Pool and stay with Nan. Barb played, umpired and coached netball and junior netball. She coached her granddaughters netball also. She was awarded Life Membership of the Quairading Netball Association in 2001 for her enormous contributions to Quairading Netball.

The Simpson/Anderson Junior Netball Shield was named after Barb and Christine Anderson’s incredible amount of commitment to the Netball Association. Barb loved this concept as it coincided with the Pat Ferguson Shield for the Junior Footballers. Barb played netball with and against all three of their daughters. Her Netball career came to an end after she snapped her Achilles tendon while filling in for a team that was short. She retired from Netball at age 43!! Barb of course was still a huge Netball supporter representing as Club Patron since 2005.

Barb played and loved her Indoor Cricket. She cleaned up the 1990 Indoor Cricket season achieving Fairest and Best, Highest Batting Aggregate and Best Bowling Average for the Ladies.

Barb coached and played Senior and Junior Basketball. Brendon says she was the best basketball coach. He says during the busy harvest season she filled in as Cricket Coach and took the best net sessions for cricket training – another feather in her cap that was already totally loaded!!!

Barb supported Rod in his football whether he was training, playing, coaching or Super Rules. She would sit in the car at football training with her small kids watching and waiting for Rod. She packed Rods sports bag every time he played football. In fact she packed Brendon and Shaun's every game they played as well. She even packed the girls boyfriends, and any other fella that may have lobbed at their home overnight. She washed an infinite number of football jumpers for all the football clubs - senior and junior. Barb was awarded the Quairading Football Club Best Club Person in 1996. That says it all.

At football games the back of the Simpson Family car was packed for a purpose. It had a mattress,

matchy cars, coloring books and pencils, and toys of all descriptions. It was known as “Barbie’s Back Seat Playschool”. The little kids loved it. She provided for all ages and everybody.

Barb did not miss one cricket match watching her boys. At home games she sat underneath the big gum tree often with Robyn Richards and sometimes they shared a wine or two. This was her relaxation time. Barb made afternoon tea for the players every home game. Shaun and Brendon had to put their foot down to stop her bringing food and nibblies for after the match. If any of the cricket boys slept over at the farm she would pick up their cricket whites and give them a good scrub and bring them back to sparkling white.

Late at night after cricket or football she would drive to town and pick up any of the Dangin and South Caroling boys - referred to as “The South Caroling Bus Run”. She fed them all at any wee hour of the night. It would be nothing to throw a lamb roast in the oven at midnight and serve hot lamb and gravy rolls to the hungry boys. What a Mum eh Shaun!!!

Barb was a willing, dedicated and tireless volunteer and contributor to our wonderful town of Quairading. She impacted all walks of our Community. There was no barrier of age, culture, religion or popularity - she loved us all.

Her generosity extended way beyond the boundaries of Quairading to Hopetown and our neighboring shires.

No-one will forget the isles and checkout of the Quairading Co-op with Barb's fully laden trolley (or sometimes trolleys!!!) overflowing with all good things. Granddaughter Candace Stone is already known as the IGA at her boarding school in Perth!

Barb's legacy will long live through her children and grandchildren.

Barbs absence will be so severely felt. Her noticeable, unique, warm and hearty voice will be missed, and those "stand-out in a crowd" beautiful thick blonde locks.

What an amazing woman we have all lost.

Barb left nothing in the tank – she gave it her all.

Our community is filled with sadness; however we are so grateful and thankful for the extraordinary and outstanding devotion and commitment she has made to all the organizations Barb and all her family members belonged to.

Q1424 won’t be on the road quite as much now, and the Dangin "Mad-Mile" will miss Barb's treks to town to do ‘the Community thing’.

May she finally have a rest and may that be in peace!

EULOGY FOR BARBARA Written & Read by Rowlie Mellor It is my very distinct honour and extremely sad circumstance to be able to speak about Barbara Simpson today.

Barbara is the third daughter of the late Cooper and Addie Dart and has Noeline and Maureen as her older sisters.

I have known Barbara since 1964 and then in 1965, taught her in Year 7 at Cunderdin Junior High School. How I met her was very unique. I was appointed to Cunderdin to teach at the town school but also to be a Housemaster at the Cunderdin Agricultural School. Barb’s wonderful Mum, Addie, had a great concern for the single teachers who were Housemasters, and so she would provide afternoon tea for them every afternoon of the school year. Not only would she put on afternoon tea, but she was also a source of advice about our lives and behaviour AND would also do instant repairs to any clothing malfunction that seemed to be an integral part of being a young man.

For example, I recall one occasion when Max Clarke was missing a button from his shirt. Addie made him take off his shirt while still at the table; she found a matching button and sewed it back on while Max continued to drink his tea, eat his biscuits and do the Daily News crossword in his singlet, completely unfazed by the situation. And this then went from mother to daughter even up to only a few weeks ago. Carrie was ironing her son Rory’s shirt when she noticed a small sewing around a button. When she queried Rory about the repair she was told that Barb had done that the previous day.

This is one example of many Addie did over the years, BUT it was also a form of education for her daughters and Barbara continued that selfless “always help others “ ethos for all of her life and it is also now and integral part of her own sons and daughters way of life.

As a Primary and Secondary student at Cunderdin, Barb gave 110% for her work and her school.

During the Year 7 we did not have a class radio so could not take school broadcasts for singing and the like, so we set about fundraising for £30 to buy a class radio. We had a weekly toffee stall and Barbara and many other students would make many toffees and turn up on a Friday to sell the toffees to the rest of the school until we had raised the money. But Barb, we did not ever discuss the health benefits of filling the Cunderdin students every week with so many toffees!

Barb was very involved in Netball and Swimming.

In fact, she spent so much time in the pool in summer that, as a blondie, she used to return to school with green hair! It was appropriate then,

that when she came to Quairading on marrying Rod, she also became very involved with Netball and the Swimming Club. Lord knows how many games of Netball she played, umpired and coached herself and then in support of Carrie, Shondelle and Mel and then in later years in support of the grandchildren. And only the Lord knows how many laps of the Cunderdin and Quairading pools Barb did as a swimmer, coach or tournament referee.

It is also of great credit to Barb, that whenever Rod, Brendon or Shaun played cricket of football, she was also present to support them or to cater for lunches or afternoon teas OR to drive them and others home after they lost count of the number of refreshing drinks they had after games. This latter practice continued right through for various times and functions they attended, no matter what time of the day or night. Barb and Rod also hosted many functions at the farm for the various teams and clubs and Barb was also known to provide sleeping accommodation for all those visitors who had also lost count of the number of refreshing drinks they had consumed. What a Mum!!

Rod came to the Cunderdin Ag School in the midsixties and he was in the house for which I was responsible. In fact, I may have been responsible for Barb and Rod meeting. You see, as a housemaster, when on duty, we would have to take the boys to the pool in summer and to the Drive In every Saturday night. The girls from the town school made sure they were at the pool every afternoon and of course at The Drive In on Saturday nights, and it was on one of those occasions that Barb and Rod met and I may have been the bus driver – that is a long shot Rod, I know.

The romance blossomed and in what seemed like a very short time, Rod and Barb were married and that led to five wonderful children – Carrie, Shondelle, Mel, Brendon and Shaun. During this time of raising a family and Rod farming in his own right, Barb was constantly involved in the community through P&C, Netball, Swimming Club, Football and Cricket, PCYC, Air Rifles, Gymnastics, Junior Golf and Ballet.

Barb took to farming instantly and became known in the family as “the animal whisperer”. In the ensuing years – apart from the farm animals of sheep and dogs, she cared for or raised peacocks, turkeys, chooks, echidnas, ducks, bobtails (even to the point of giving her life saving skills to bobbies that had the misfortune to fall into the pool), birds, cows, emus, cats and orphaned kangaroos.

The bobbies diet, by the way, consisted of tomato, strawberry, capsicum and cucumber – no wonder they kept returning to the Simpson’s backyard – and this feeding of animals would happen any time of the day or night.

It seemed to be the orphaned animals that Barbara took a shine to and they took a particular shine to her. It was quite common for the family to go on winter holidays to Hopetoun towing a trailer with orphaned lambs and joeys in home-made pouches.

On these trips, Barbara was always on the lookout for Coke bottles discarded on the roadside as they made the best feeding bottles for her animals. It was not uncommon to have “live roast lamb” as she would put the lambs into the wood stove oven, with the door down to warm them up or to put ticking clocks in the lamb’s blanket to simulate the mother’s heartbeat.

However there was one animal that Barb had no hesitation in dispatching and that was a snake. On one occasion, she had just put the sheets and linen on the clothes line when she noticed a snake under the line. She called to Rod to kill the snake and he appeared, firearm in hand and blew the snake to kingdom come, only to have the destroyed snake’s innards spatter all over the sheets and linen. And yet she was sad at the killing of snakes and that was a huge measure of Barbara’s innate compassion.

Just as in Quairading where Barb was involved in so many activities with P&C and Rotary catering and also catering with Julie Bavin, Beth Simpson and Jan Bloom, when in Hopetoun for holidays she was just as equally and enthusiastically involved in that community with street stalls and the like.

While there also, she was very successful at fishing, much to the annoyance of the rest of the family who did not share the same success.

However, the times for Barb and Rod were set back during seeding time in June 1980. It was at this time that the house on the farm burnt down and very little could be salvaged. But this is where Barbara’s true resilience shone through. Instead of moping and muttering “Oh woe is me”, she set to in the reconstruction and she then dug the footings for the house that stands on the farm today. A remarkable lady!

Barbara came to work at the Quairading School in the mid-nineties and her official designation was as a Teachers’ Aide in the Kindy. She formed an immediate bond with all the teachers with whom she worked and an incredible bond with all the children who passed through the Kindy. She had a particular bond with Sue Shenton, with whom she worked for many years, and together they formed the most dedicated Kindy team. An absolute highlight of the Kindy year was the Teddy Bears Picnic, which she hosted at the farm and all the children were exposed to Barbara’s great love for animals, her tremendous sense of fun and, of course, to her great ability to cater for everyone.

Not one student or parent helper or bus driver went home hungry on those days. For all those who went through the Kindy at that time, it was a

place of great learning and enormous fun along with fantastic humour. I am sure that all of those students who are here today would agree that there was no better way to start your school career than under the guidance of Mrs Simpson and Mrs Shenton.

And in that regard, Barb was regarded as a teacher and not just the person who assisted the teacher.

In fact, I know of two sisters, who upon being given the news of Barb’s passing, said “but she was our kindy teacher”. But, Barbara has been a teacher in our community for a long, long time.

She taught us all by her example of having an extremely happy outlook, a most generous nature, a friendliness to all and an ability to love and care for her family at the same time as being a vital cog in our school and community.

I have not set out to give a ball by ball description of each section of Barbara’s life but to give a feeling of the essence of this person. There are not enough synonyms in the dictionary for the word “good” to describe Barbara, but I will try to sum it up in this way and it is something we can all learn from – she loved her family and her community; she gave her all for her family and community AND she was smiling, friendly and extremely happy in doing so. And so Barb, in your words, “it’s time to go and do a round or two for a pound or two”. Rest in Peace Barb. And we all love you!

LIFE IN THE 1500S Next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be...

Here are some facts about life in the 1500's: 1) Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good

by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children--last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it -- hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water."

2) Houses had thatched roofs--thick straw, piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice rats, and bugs) lived in the roof.

When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof -- hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."

3) There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

4) The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt, -- hence the saying "dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entry way -- hence, a "thresh hold."

5) They cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day.

Sometimes the stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while -- hence the rhyme, "peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old."

6) Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man "could bring home the bacon."

They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat."

7) Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with a high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

8) Most people did not have pewter plates, but had trenchers, a piece of wood with the middle scooped out like a bowl. Often trenchers were made from stale paysan bread which was so old and hard that they could use them for quite some time. Trenchers were never washed and a lot of times worms and mold got into the wood and old bread. After eating off wormy moldy trenchers, one would get "trench mouth."

9) Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or "upper crust."

10) Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would some times knock them out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial.

They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up -- hence the custom of holding a "wake."

11) England is old and small and they started out running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a "bone-house" and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, one out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the "graveyard shift") to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be "saved by the bell" or was considered a "dead ringer."

this really has nothing to do with asset appreciation but I didn’t want you to miss out on the mental picture I had in my head) Income generation- like if you bought the most beautiful dress in the whole world and received money from renting it out (to close friends and family [excluding younger sisters] you could trust to look after such a beautiful piece of clothing of course!)

In my experience when women invest they almost always have an online savings account that they squirrel $50 a month into OR they buy shoes. Let’s pretend the day will come when we have enough shoes (as if) and we all start saving and have a little secret nest egg. Why do we Perhaps the most common question I get asked like our online savings account so much?

Because we can see it on our internet banking, ALL the time is “what should I invest in?” it’s easy to set up and cash is comfortable- if FIRST DISCLOSURE- I am not a financial planner, you need it for whatever reason (like a shoe sale) you can get access to it quickly and so anything you read below is absolutely the easily…. Does this cover all the reasons you have ideas of a person high on caffeine and a little cash nest egg? chocolate.

When you invest in something, you have the potential to receive return in two ways: 1.

Interestingly though cash doesn’t appreciate.

You might be familiar with the term ‘inflation’ but if not- remember how you could buy a Bubble-O-Bill for $1.50 at the community pool 15 years ago, and now they cost $3.50. No, the pool isn’t making millions ripping you off when you buy an ice cream (or are they? Investigative

report for next month!) this is inflation. The same $1.50 buys less goods and is therefore worth less in real terms as time goes buy (if this phenomenon interests you google “time value of money”).

So, we must receive a really good income generation from the cash reserve account to make up for inflation right? Ummm…. Maybe not? Have you seen where interest rates are right now… in some cases you will find out that the income (interest) you receive on your cash account is no more than the inflation ratewhich means you are actually losing money in real terms.

If you are looking down the barrel of retirement, I would be focusing on investments that generate good income… so that you can live off that income without having to sell the investments (i.e. you can’t pay for a holiday with a block of land you own, but if you own a house you can pay for your next cruise with the rent you receive).

If you are desperately trying to save to pay for the purse destroying thing they call ‘boarding school’ I would be concentrating on investments that have the potential to have strong asset appreciation OR give you the ability to reinvest the income you receive from any investment you make.

This little article is in no means an exhaustive list of things you can invest in… there are honestly so many! But perhaps when you are looking at investments, ask yourself why you are investing, what your risk appetite is and whether income generation or asset appreciation is more important- the answer to these questions might help you weed out what you don’t want to invest in!

Please, please, please remember there is also no one silver bullet. We don’t keep buying the same pair of black ballet flats, we have a couple of different pairs of shoes to cover different occasions… take the same theory when you invest, spread your investments across a couple of different classes.

Finally, don’t forget to invest in yourself- sounds cheesy I know, but honestly why not spend some of your nest egg on a financial planner getting advice OR take a course to upskill yourself OR start a business based on your passion. There are not enough women in the world who know their worth- so take a chance, do some research and take charge of your finances!

WARRIOR WELLBEING ARTICLE Give Credit Where Credit Is Due – What are your expectations?

Last week my 8 year old son participated in his first school swimming carnival, and ended up winning his first ever medal for “champion boy” in his age. Unfortunately I was away on a work trip, and of course when I spoke to the family that evening my son was the first on the end of the phone to tell me proudly of his achievement (he doubted himself and never expected to win). This recognition for effort has been amazing for his confidence and I have even noticed a positive change in his motivation towards other extra-curricular activities that had previously challenged his confidence.

QUAIRADING UNITING CHURCH GODS MARVELOUS EASTER CHEMISTRY A workmen ot the great chemist Michael Faraday accidently knocked a silver cup into a solution of acid. It promptly dissolved, eaten up by the acid. The workmen was greatly disturbed by the accident. The chemist came in and put another chemical into the jar, and shortly all the silver presipated to the bottom of the jar.

The shapeless mass was lifted out and sent to a silversmith, and the cup was restored to its original shape.

If a human genius can do a thing like that. Why should we doubt that God can raise the dead?.

PENNANT TENNIS Woo hoo!!!! We have finally broken the drought. 1969 is believed to be the last time Quairading won an A grade pennant flag. Well 2017 has proven to be our year. We travelled to Dowerin on the 18th March to take on Goomalling, who we had beaten two weeks earlier 24-6 hoping that we were going to take out the Grand Final in the same fashion.

On completion of our singles & doubles we had already won 16-6 meaning we didn’t need to play our mixed doubles but we went ahead and played under lights (due to rain & cloud cover) and took out the East Avon Pennant Grand Final 21-9.

We have had a phenomenal year going through the season undefeated and winning rather convincingly each week. A huge thank you to the 17 locals who have been a part of the team throughout the 2016/17 season. Those awesome tennis players are Lyall Brown, Ethan Brown, Grant Mills, Linden Johnston, Jake Stacey, Jason Caporn, Brad Hall, Andrew Osborne, Tom Curtin, Lisa Caporn, Kelli Brown, Carol Dall, Kelsie Squiers, Janine Anderson, Amalia Curtin, Kylie Squiers & Olivia Brown.

A big thank you to Jo Hayes for driving the bus and to Janine & Jason for being our awesome cheer squad on the day.

QUAIRADING BOWLING CLUB Results for 2016-2017 Ladies Pennant Season Congratulations to our Quairading White team who brought home a flag after 15 years, defeating Cunderdin by 8 shots.

The team consisted of Skipper Pam Caporn, Liz Anderson, Jenny Swan and Chris Gimbel. Skipper Heather Gelmi, Gwen Hards, Elainde Atkinson and Marie Killian.

It was an exciting game to watch, thank you to all that came to cheer the girls on.

We had 16 ladies participate in our Championship singles event, the winner for the 2016-2017 season was Gwen Hards who played consistant bowls all day. Runner up was Bertha Holbrook, well done to you both.

Plate winner was Marg Dall and the runner up was Marie Killian.
