SCRIPTED | DRAMA

An impassioned family saga about love, conflict and betrayal Monday 7 May 1945 – the Second World War finally comes to an end and a new, brighter future beckons. In the midst of central Stockholm celebrations, two strangers come together with a quick kiss, parting company immediately after. Upper-class girl Nina and kitchen hand Calle don’t yet know that their brief encounter will come to have tumultuous consequences for many people. For the Löwander family the end of the war comes as an immense relief. They are running Djurgårdskällaren, a high-end restaurant in the heart of Stockholm. During the war, the oldest son Gustaf has managed to keep the restaurant afloat by somewhat questionable means. He intends to carry on running it exactly the same way it has always been run.

When the middle son Peter returns home after the war, he discovers that the family restaurant is on the brink of bankruptcy. Big changes are needed to keep up with the times. Can youngest daughter Nina come to the rescue? She is fighting for the family’s approval to open a nightclub in the restaurant banquet hall, but her infatuation with Calle turns her life upside down. The future of the restaurant develops into a full-blown family conflict. But the real decision maker is Helga, the mother, who with assistance from head chef Backe, watches over the family business. She is now faced with the challenge of keeping the family together while securing the survival of the restaurant in a new age. Over two series viewers will accompany the Löwander family and the restaurant staff through several decades of success and defeat, love affairs and conflicts, all accompanied by contemporary music and fashion.

Brand New Series 2 If you had to choose between safety and freedom, what would matter the most? One year after the Russian “Silk Occupation” forced Norway to resume oil production because of Europe’s severe energy crisis, the daily life of Norwegians is still remarkably similar to the one we currently know. Nevertheless, something alien has taken root. The strangers look very much like us, but their language and their habits gives them away and makes them noticeable. What do they want? They’re already in charge of the oil, which was the reason why they arrived in the first place. Why don’t they leave? This brand new second season kicks off with an armed conflict between the Norwegian Coast Guard and a Russian Security Company, guarding the oil installation of Melkøya in Northern Norway. Conflicting interests collide. Arms are pointed at one another. No one wants to back down. Meanwhile, it becomes increasingly obvious that the premise for ruling the country is set by somebody else, resulting in a governmental crisis. The silk glove is turning into an iron fist.

12

This forces the question of who’s with the intruders and who’s against them. This high tensed crisis situation spurs a chain of conflicts that has severe consequences both politically and down to a personal level. The question that everybody has to ask themselves constantly, now that the pressure is increasing, and which is the tenet of the entire season is: who can you trust? Chris Crean, a young church going family man had recently moved into Resolution Place and found himself at the centre of gang territory. The police pleaded with Chris to go into witness protection, and the Black Power put a hit on his life. After three attempts he was shot in his own home. However Chris’ stand and his death would see the Black Power stronghold crumple, changes to the laws of witness testimony in NZ, and he was posthumously awarded for his bravery and resolve. The story of how Jean Batten, a forgotten 1930s aviator, celebrity – and mystery – risked everything to become the first person to fly solo from England to her homeland of New Zealand. In 1934, Jean Batten is on top of the world. A brilliant aviator, she has fame, fortune and a man, Beverly Shepherd, who adores her. But her ultimate dream is to be the first person to fly solo from England to her homeland New Zealand, a flight critics dismiss as foolish, given the expanse of the treacherous Tasman Sea. Undeterred, Batten embarks on the epic flight, overcoming dust storms, monsoons, enervating heat and near misses. Her successful arrival in New Zealand causes an outpouring of love and adulation from her homeland. But a future with Shepherd is not to be – his airliner crashes the day of Batten’s return and with it, Jean’s dreams of happiness. Profoundly depressed, Jean gives up on flying. It is only through the inspiration of Batten’s unfailingly loyal mother Ellen that she gets back in the air again, to cement her place in the record books forever.

Their lives revolve around the same social events, the same arguments and the same problems as their parents did – just with fancier electronics. Solsidan is a fast-moving modern comedy-drama filled with warmth, affection and sharp humour about topics that are the same the world over – 40 might be the new 30, but it’s still the same old 30.

Le Morning Breakfast radio sitcom Tongue-in-cheek short format comedy about a young breakfast radio team – presenter Ludo and sidekicks Greg and Élodie – providing wacky entertainment on and off air. Welcome to the crazy daily life of Le Morning team at provincial radio station, Start FM. Despite their shoestring budget and epic ego battles, they’re always on air from 6 til 9am, pulling out all the stops to attract new listeners. Survivor The original and best adventure reality game show

Survivor is a show that tests the spirit of a group of ordinary, and yet extraordinary, people. Marooned on an uninhabited tropical island, with little more than the clothes on their backs and their own animal cunning, every second of their adventures as castaways is recorded over several weeks.

40

As they catch their own food, build their own shelter and order their own society, castaways must compete in increasingly difficult tests of strategy, guile and ruthlessness. With an unforgettable twist every episode climaxes with the tense drama of the Tribal Council. The castaways gather to vote one of their group off the island. The vote is by secret ballot, and the castaways may have different motives for casting their vote (resentment, jealousy or even a personality clash) but the result of the Tribal Council is final and one castaway must be eliminated in each episode.

The ultimate test of faithfulness Take four couples in committed relationships and get them to spend 12 days and nights in paradise – without their partner. On opposite sides of the island, they’ll be surrounded by hot singles with one mission: do everything they can to make our couples give in to temptation. Life in both camps is filled with wild parties and romantic escapades. But every night the host invites one group or the other to a bonfire where they’ll be shown on video exactly what their partners have been up to. For some it’s cause for relief; for others suspicion, anger or immediate revenge.

Nation’s Brightest Who’s your country’s cleverest?

The Exception Exceptions are everywhere, to win the game, you just need to spot them In each episode four new contestants step into the iconic set and battle it out for the chance to face the wall of doors and get a shot at the jackpot. The game is simple: one statement and a list of items. One does not belong: the exception. The only question is: which one is it? So, in The Exception, there are many more true facts to discover than in other game shows. Contestants are whittled down until the semi-final where the best player meets the Champion, i.e. the winner from the previous episode.

Who will win this duel and go to the final money round? The Champion fighting for his title and privileges or the challenger who dreams of taking his place? In the very graphic finale, the contestant faces the wall of doors to cash in some money. Four rows of doors stand between him and the jackpot but only the ones corresponding to the exceptions will open up! Lucky or not, the contestant will come back as Champion to fight another day and increase his kitty until a challenger manages to outsmart him. Air Productions for France 3

Face To Face A strong new concept in emo-tainment An engaging format where very different stories can be told

Silence can be golden Words play the main role in almost every conflict. We blame each other, we throw accusations back and forth. Often things only go from bad to worse. We let the conflict grow, until the overriding feeling is that ‘there is nothing else to be said’. Then we never want to see each other again and everything seems lost. Things will never get better. In this exciting format, we meet people who want to get back together with someone who means a lot to them but who they fell out with because of a misunderstanding, row or accusation. As talking wasn’t the answer in the past, people start by just sitting opposite each other, this time without talking: a proven method in many types of therapy. Each episode consists of multiple stories. Each one starts with the request for help from a person who wants to make up. Then the moment when the two sit down and just look at each other in silence. Afterwards, both sit on the couch with the host who interviews them both on what will happen next. Viewers can follow how the two move forward on the website of the show. Physical fitness is just the start – the true test is one of character. “Would I want this man alongside me in a war zone?” is the Special Forces instructors’ allimportant question.

You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me

Psychic Challenge

Showcasing a country’s most amazing children

A major primetime hit across the world, this national search for clairvoyant talent is essential viewing for believers and sceptics alike. From an initial casting of thousands, Psychic Challenge identifies 10 people with a substantive claim to possessing psychic abilities. These magnetic mediums are then set up to three tasks per show to prove they have real powers. Each paranormal challenge is designed to probe our psychics’ abilities as objectively as possible – from describing events they could not possibly know about, to finding a man buried within a huge search area. A panel made up of sceptics and believers mark each performance. For the fakers, there’s nowhere to hide – the psychic receiving the fewest votes is eliminated. This is compelling viewing, whether you believe or not.

Pitting the nation’s most talented kids against seemingly unbeatable adult opponents is a recipe for primetime Saturday night success. Can a highkicking eleven year old break more bricks than a champion weightlifter? Can an eight year old identify more countries just by their shape than a geography professor? You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me! is the ultimate kids versus adults TV challenge show. Watch as fearless youngsters go head-to-head against successful adults from the fields of music, culture and sport. Will strength and experience tell, or will youthful exuberance win the day? SAS: Who Dares Wins After two hugely successful series, SAS: Who Dares Wins is back!

Chief Instructor Ant and his team of ex-Special Forces soldiers are now heading to the heart of the Ecuadorian jungle, taking a group of ordinary men through the toughest military entrance process in the world: SAS Selection. The jungle phase of selection is widely seen as the most difficult. It’s not enough to be physically fit: you have to be psychologically strong and prepared to confront your own demons. Every one of the tests is based on authentic SAS selection and is designed to play on the mental weaknesses that come to the surface when people are pushed

92

to the edge. It’s raw and unforgiving; if you try and fight it you’ll lose. The heat, humidity, noise, dangers and darkness make people turn in on themselves. Only the strongest can survive. On genuine selection only a small percentage make it through the jungle stage. Every one of the tests is designed to use the environment against the recruits and play on the mental weaknesses that come to the surface. The true character of the recruits will be revealed through: psychological profiling and testing; sleep deprivation and stress positions; jungle warfare training and capture and interrogation. For nine intensive days the recruits will be pushed to the limit to discover if

they have the psychological strength to succeed. This time the recruits’ biggest enemy isn’t the Directing Staff though; it’s the jungle itself.

The Secret Life Of 4, 5, 6 Year Olds Lifting the lid on an unseen world The award-winning series that lifts the lid on the uncensored law of the playground is back with a brand new cast of 4 and 5 year olds, an inner city location, and a ground-breaking social experiment into boys and girls and whether there’s a difference.

In The Secret Life Of 4 Year Olds we remember what it felt like to be rejected as three children struggle to make a friend – we follow shy Taisia, impulsive Fabian and Evie-Rae who only finds her feet when she agrees to play the class cat. The Secret Life Of 5 Year Olds sees the arrival of Daisy – a feisty girl with cerebral palsy – in her pink spangled electric wheelchair, providing the other children with the opportunity to explore difference.

In The Secret Life Of Boys And Girls we see how differently a group of boys and a group of girls react to the same challenges. Which gender has the better memory? Which gender risks all in a penalty shoot-out? Which gender reacts more politely to lemonade spiked with a pinch of salt? With hilarious results, our scientists are left to ponder whether the differences we see in the classroom are biological, or learnt through social conditioning.

A profoundly intimate film about life and death in a family This documentary by BAFTA winning director Morgan Matthews is filmed over a period of more than ten years following the life of his father Geoff and his wonderfully eccentric partner Anna. In an attempt to re-connect with his Dad after becoming estranged, Morgan uses the camera as both a facilitator and a filter that enables him to stay close during challenging times. The film follows Geoff and Anna through a financial crisis that sees them losing their home; it captures the challenges of their relationship, and

documents the decline in Geoff’s health as a result of emphysema and cancer. With the warmth, love and humour that is so often mixed up in family dramas, this is a documentary made from the inside by a film-maker who is used to turning his camera towards other people’s families – but never his own. The result is deeply personal, but the themes of a challenging paternal dynamic, a relationship under pressure, and death in the family, are widespread and universal. As the nationwide resentencing of juvenile lifers begins, journalist Susanna Reid travels to America and follows the hearing of one of the most notorious child homicide cases ever to hit Jacksonville, Florida. Joshua Phillips was just 14 when he was convicted of brutally murdering his 8 year old neighbour, Maddie Clifton. If you go into the woods today you’re in for a big surprise

Flamboyant antiques expert David Dickinson hosts the show where you can make the most money for your antiques – either sit down with one of the dealers and haggle for cash on the spot, or take a gamble and go to auction in the hope of making more money. The challenge is how to get the best deal. Contestants meet the dealers who offer cash for an item. The seller must decide whether to accept the guaranteed money or risk fortune or failure in the auction room. Will they make the right choice? Tipping Point is the long-running, daily game show that has set ratings records in the UK. Four players take on the show’s distinctive machine in a battle of skill and luck. The machine is filled with counters worth money. The contestants answer a series of questions, and every time they get a correct answer, they take control of the machine. Through a combination of timing and intuition, they must drop special counters into the machine, to try to push other counters off the shelf and into the ‘win zone’, where they are converted into cash.
