Letter from the Head of Primary Dear All, Thank you to those parents who joined our Year 5 and Year 4 Parent Forums this week. I would like to say that I am really enjoying getting to know parents better and discovering what sort of things are on everyone’s minds. However, I need more parents to attend to help me eat all the cakes and biscuits that are prepared for them. My next Parent Forums are with Year 3 parents on Monday 5 March and Year 2 parents on Tuesday 6 March (08:00-09:00: Room 215). Please do try to come along and meet other parents and help me discuss life at Bangkok Prep!

I have a few friendly reminders for everyone: Our Late Zone, for late parents, has been moved from the Gallery to Room 215. Please do try to be on time to collect your children. Should parents be consistently late, please do come and see me to discuss the safeguarding of children. In addition, please be reminded that once you have signed out your children, they are your responsibility, especially if you allow them to play on our playground equipment, unsupervised. Unfortunately, some parents have not been watching their children play as well as they should have, which has led to unnecessary injuries. Also, please do not forget, if you can, sign up with Mr Duffin for this week’s golf with our teachers (Mr Duffin (cduffin@bangkokprep. ac.th). This time the golf will be played on Saturday 10 March beginning at around 10:00 am. Hope to see you there.

Finally, a very sad and regretful reminder! As you are aware, Mrs Jo North and her family are relocating back to the UK. On a personal note, I would like to thank all those parents, our FoBP and all our teachers, who have offered so much support and best wishes, especially those of you who have personally come in to do so.

Mrs North appreciates every one of you as do I. Jo will be in school next week finalising her travel arrangements and discussing her curriculum and after school plans for the remainder of the year with her replacement Mr David Egan. Should anyone have any concerns or require clarification, please do drop in and see me.

Your understanding and support for Mrs North, her family and Mr Egan, is very much appreciated. I am sure you will all agree, the impact Mrs North and her family have had on Bangkok Prep, has been truly amazing and very, very special!

Year 4 Residential Trip to Khao Yai The Year 4 children had a great time on their residential trip to Khao Yai last week. It was jam packed with adventure, activities and lots of new challenges.

On Wednesday the children tried lots of team building activities such as orienteering, jungle gym, swimming and a game of sheep and wolves. Unfortunately our star gazing activity had to be called off due to rain but there were plenty of smiles when the children had some free time.

On Thursday we got to go into the national park. The children completed a trail walk, scavenger hunt and water research. In the evening they had a BBQ with marshmallows!

On Friday we spent the morning completing art activities and sketches in our beautiful surroundings before it was time to go home.

The teachers are so proud of all the pupils. They were extremely well behaved and a credit to Bangkok Prep.

Cooking ASA by A Little Something The Cooking After School Activity has been one of the most popular activities for many years. We have Cooking ASAs running on Monday and Wednesday for Primary students. Our students are engaged, learning, happy and having fun at this Cooking ASA. They learn how to cook a variety of different things, are taught how to use equipment safely and understand the importance of good hygiene when cooking. On top of that they always get to eat or take home what they have made with their friends!!

Cooking is a lifelong skill that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Neilson Hays Young Writers Awards Each year the Neilson Hays Library invites students from Year 6 and above to submit illustrated children’s picture books or short stories as part of a writing competition.

Year 6 have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks on this project and have produced some exceptionally creative and imaginative pieces. However, after much deliberation, 5 stories have been chosen to be entered into the competition.

Finalists If selected as a finalist, they will be invited to participate in a workshop at Chakrabongse Villas, where published writers and illustrators will critique and coach the students on their works.

Winners Winners of the competition will get to see their works read out loud by prominent figures in the literary and art world, as well as be presented with certificates and a cash prize of 10,000 baht per category.

There will also be a special Ambassador’s Selection Prize of 10,000 baht, presented by H.E. Ms. Donica Pottie of the Embassy of Canada.

All our nominees should feel truly proud to be representing Bangkok Prep and we wish them the very best of luck!

Year 6 Residential to Kanchanaburi Last week, Year 6 went on a fantastic residential to Kanchanaburi. This trip was linked to our Thematic Unit of Government and Conflict, and we visited many sites connected to World War 2 and the Thai-Burma Railway. We received many compliments from members of the public about how well behaved and respectful our children were in the museums, they were excellent representatives of Bangkok Prep.

The trip was also a great opportunity for personal development. The students were away from home for four days, and developed their independence, organisation and teamwork skills. In addition, many students tried new things and faced new challenges, such as bike riding, climbing and zip lining!

Letter from the Head of Secondary Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues, On Friday evening our Year 12/13 students will be breathing a sigh of relief after finishing their week long Mock Exams.

Unfortunately our teachers will then be grimacing at the thought of all the marking ahead of them, red pens in hand. Students will then wait nervously for their results to see how well they have done, with an eye to their future University destinations. From the Mock exams, teachers will then use question level analysis to decipher performance to offer purposeful and insightful feedback to each student. We then have specialists from Elevate Education delivering focused exam preparation sessions to all exam students on Thursday. This is timed to keep the momentum of optimising exam performance fresh in everyone’s minds.

March is a very busy month in the FOBISIA calendar. We will be sending teams off around the region and locally to compete in a variety of events. The new Climbing Competition will be here in Bangkok, the U13 Games is in Phuket, whilst the Year 7/8 Maths competition is in Shanghai. FOBISIA is a great organisation to be members of and currently has 57 member schools. It offers us diverse opportunities for staff development and student participation in a range of sports and interests. Browsing their website and reading their magazine ‘the FOBISIAN’ gives a good indication of why membership is hugely valuable to us as a community www.fobisia.org. You should be able to spot a few familiar faces too!

In the coming weeks we will have our “Book Week”, so please watch out for competitions and events arranged by our English Faculty in and around school. There will be some interesting developments this year so please keep an eye on your social media feeds for reading based posts. By the end of the week your children should be able to tell you what DEAR means and the books favoured by each Faculty. Reading and literacy are critical to success in education and life in general, so it is something we are keen to foster in our students. It is no coincidence that in the UK students do not take a degree, but read for a degree before graduating. Do we spend as much on books as we do on social media apps or downloads nowadays?

On that note I will leave you to have a relaxing weekend.

First Ever House Bleep Test at Bangkok Prep The House competition entered new territory last week and some participants would say unwelcome territory! The bleep test is a multi-stage fitness test in which you must do 20 metre shuttle runs in time with the bleeps until the bleeps get too quick for you. It is a maximal test which means it will take you to your fitness limit.

101 students and teachers lined up from Secondary and began the gruelling test of physical and mental strength over two lunch times. In Key Stage 3 Paki and Charlotte C took home the House points for Ursus and Surus and both displayed phenomenal aerobic capacity by reaching level 11. Their performances put a lot of us teachers to shame.

In the Key Stage 4, 5 and teacher test we were treated to appearances from such fitness luminaries as Mr Jones, Mr Kellner, Mrs Cantrill, Ms Marsh and Miss Rugg. All Houses were extremely well represented and it was actually a bit of a squeeze fitting everyone in. The female category saw a very strong performance from Ms Marsh, who schooled her students outside the classroom and took home 1st place for Ursus. In the male race it looked like Mr Pollock was going to make it a teacher dominated podium, however, the wheels came off and Tyler took a deserved 1st place; reaching level 13 in the process.

TISAC Battle of the Bands 2018 Winners Fresh from winning the TISAC Battle of the Bands competition earlier this month ‘Untamed’ took to the stage in our Auditorium during assembly on Monday to perform their excellent cover of the Santana classic ‘Smooth’. Which demonstrated their musicality, professionalism, accuracy, cohesion and entertainment perfectly.

Following their performance, they were joined on stage by our other TISAC Battle of the Bands entrant, Year 9 Band Icurus, to receive their award and certificates.
