Letter from the Head of School Designate

Dear Parents and Students,

Mr Owen, Mr Wilsonlock and I are now turning our thoughts towards planning our orientation and induction events for the new staff who will be joining Bangkok Prep in August 2018.

Whilst it is rather early to be saying our goodbyes, following the Songkran Holiday, I will be letting you know which teachers will be leaving us in the summer. During the next few weeks, I will also share brief ‘bios’ of the new teachers that we have appointed during our recruitment sessions in Bangkok and London. As both of our campuses are expanding, we have appointed an additional nine members of staff to cater for this growth. These positions begin formally in August 2018.

As part of our growth plans, I am delighted to announce that Ms Tia Court-Smith has been appointed as Whole School Director of Studies. I am also very pleased to announce that Mr Josh Watters has been promoted to the role of Deputy Head of Secondary and Mr Martin Breen has also been promoted to the role of Deputy Head of Primary.

Some of our other new and exciting appointments are listed below: Ashley Woods – Teacher of English Ashley studied journalism at Southampton University (UK) specialising in fashion and culture. She followed her passion for fashion, and for two years she worked in the industry in London. Ashley has been teaching the English Curriculum for more than 5 years and has worked in a range of schools both in the UK and internationally.

Chris Hall – Teacher of ICT and Computer Science Chris is an experienced teacher of computer science and a passionate computer programmer who is thrilled to be joining Bangkok Prep in August.

Since graduating he has spent the last 6 years teaching computer science in London secondary schools in Lead Teacher / Head of Department roles.

He is very excited to be emigrating to Bangkok and to be employed at Bangkok Prep.

David Cleary – Teacher of Maths

PRIMARY NEWS Clare Magee – Primary Class Teacher Clare is originally from Wigan, England and she trained as a teacher at St Martins College, Lancaster University, UK. She started her teaching career in East Ham, London and has since continued to work in Hawaii and Ireland.

She has since been teaching in Bangkok for the past 6 years. She is looking forward to working at Bangkok Prep.

Daniel O’Sullivan – Primary Class Teacher Daniel is really looking forward to returning to Bangkok Prep in August.

During this academic year, he has been teaching in London and has gained valuable experience as the coordinator for both literacy and oracy in his current school. Those of you that already know Daniel, will remember that he was a great Year 2 Leader and Student Council facilitator. He also thoroughly enjoyed coaching the U11 Boys football team and was fully involved in the FOBISIA games, Helping Hands and the Puppy Cup. Daniel Smith – Primary Class Teacher Daniel Smith will be joining Bangkok Prep School as a Key Stage 2 teacher.

He has taught across a wide range of ages, in various roles, across a variety of outstanding schools both internationally (in Dubai and Beijing) and also in his hometown: London. He cannot wait to meet the students at Bangkok Prep and support them in achieving their full potential in a multiplicity of ways.

Eleanor Voce-Godwin – Primary Class Teacher Eleanor is so happy and excited to be returning to Bangkok Prep in August as a KS2 teacher. She has spent the last year working in a school in London, teaching through an arts based curriculum. She has had an excellent year, learning lots of new and exciting things to bring back with her to Thailand and share at Bangkok Prep. When Eleanor was previously at Bangkok Prep, she played an integral role in Helping Hands Club and FOBISIA amongst other aspects of the school community.

Jake McIntosh – Teacher of Maths Jake is a very experienced mathematics teacher (including GCSE & A Level Further Maths) and key Stage coordinator. He has been living and working in London for the past four years. Jake is an Applied Finance and Investment graduate and in 2015 he obtained his Master of Education - Secondary Mathematics. He is really looking forward to his move to Thailand and joining the Bangkok Prep community.

Ollie Brewer - Swim and Stamina Coach Ollie is extremely excited about joining the Bangkok Prep PE and Swimming Coaching Team in summer this year. He has a vast amount of experience in swimming from an early age up until his university studies at Loughborough University where he swam for the university team at the British International Championships in 2013 in the 200m backstroke. He has competed at County, Regional and National level and has been a coach since summer 2008. He studied Sports Coaching at university covering a range of topics such as Sports Development, Sports Nutrition and Strength and Conditioning. After university he further developed his skills and qualified as a level 3 Personal Trainer.

Paul Forbes – Key Stage 3 Leader Paul Forbes is delighted to be joining Bangkok Prep in the role of Key Stage Three Leader in August. He has taught internationally for thirteen years, holding various leadership posts in British curriculum and International Baccalaureate schools in Singapore, Germany, and Switzerland. He will be moving to Bangkok with his wife, Alison, who is an Early Years Teacher, and their two children, Matthew and Jacob. He is very much looking forward to moving to Thailand, integrating into the Bangkok Prep community, and supporting the development of the pupils in such an exciting stage of the school’s development.

Semhar Ahdego – Teacher of Maths and English Semhar is a passionate and energetic Canadian teacher who has been working in London for the past two years. She has taught Mathematics and Biology at KS3 and KS4 and she is currently teaching Year 6 at an independent school in London, UK. Semhar has also delivered a series Social Studies and novel studies to KS2 students. This will be her first time in Bangkok and she is very much looking forward to meeting all the staff, students and Parents at Bangkok Prep

ASAs are now finished for Term 2 Block 2 ASAs have now finished for Term 2.

Please be reminded that there will be no after school activities for the last 9 days of Term 2. Please ensure that you adjust pick up arrangements from Monday 26th March onwards. School Bus users will automatically be adjusted to a 2.30 or 3.20pm bus.

In Term 3 the ASA programme (same activities as Term 2) will resume on Monday 30th April and end on Friday 15th June. Some team sport activities will not run in Term 3, students/parents will be notified directly.

Junior BISAC Swim Championships On Sunday the 18th of March, Bangkok Prep attended the Junior BISAC swimming championships at NIST. The Bulldogs team attended in the capacity as an exhibition team due to Prep not yet being full members of BISAC and this was a great opportunity to show that we are a strong swimming school with the capabilities of beating the larger schools. Unfortunately due to Prep representing in the capacity of an invited team, we were unable to register points which would have surely shown we were the champions.

Our young Bulldogs were excellent in appearance, preparedness, and in results. They once again showed the ‘never give up’ spirit we have come to expect from our Bulldog swim team.

This was a very hectic day with our swimmers not having a lot of recovery time between swims and all swimmers had to dig deep, and they did!

There were some incredible swims and goosebump performances. Out of 6 categories, Bangkok Prep were the undisputed winners of 3.

Senior BISAC Swim Championships Our bulldog senior team showed a very good performance at this competition. They competed with the big international schools for the first time this year, as we have had the opportunity to attend this BISAC invitational. We brought six age group categories and we finished in 4th place over all (unofficially).

It was very tough for our U13 Girls and Boys because they had just come off of a long trip from FOBISIA Phuket, but they still fought for their team and also achieved good personal best times.

There were some fantastic swims that got two high point age group awards (unofficial) by Nisha Kijkanakorn (13-14 age group female), Nao Takahashi (2nd place 13-14 age group) and Elizabeth Wilkins (11-12 age group), our 15 & over had done an amazing job.

Nisha has shown our team spirit to wear the bulldog team suit on every event. Yena was a good helper and swam up with the 15 & over girls.

Prim helped our senior team and she also got her personal best time.

Beacon also helped the senior team with the relay and got his personal best time.

Our senior team have made great improvements to their personal best times, including: Angelina Nasha Sean Rihitto James Boom Pimmada Yena Anna Caitlin Perth Mark Filippo Congratulations to all of our first time senior swimmers who attended this BISAC event.

Letter from the Head of Primary Dear All, Once one exciting, busy week has passed, we appear to have another one and another one. I would like to say that I have really enjoyed this week @53 and hope you and your children have also. I am particularly excited about our FOBISIA Maths team attending the competition this weekend in Vietnam as well as the Tournament of Minds hosted at T77 this Sunday. There is never a quiet moment at Bangkok Prep! Therefore, I will take this opportunity of thanking all the staff that keep these busy, busy weeks going from one to another.

As you will be aware, this term we have our scheduled Parent/ Teacher consultations on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th April (2.30-5.00pm). For your convenience, our Online booking system is currently ‘live’ and ready for you to book your appointments with any teacher that is directly involved with your children. I am delighted to say the new system, organised and monitored

by Mr Chadderton, is working incredibly well. If you have tried to make an appointment and have been unsuccessful, for any reason, please contact your class teacher or Mr Chadderton. The closing date for making appointments is on Sunday 1st April at 2.30pm. Please also be reminded that our ASA Programme has finished for this term and will begin again on Monday 30th April, after the Songkran Holiday.

Primary Book Week 2018 ‘Heroes and Villains’ Launch Assembly and Parade To kick start our week the whole of Primary took part in a special launch assembly held in the Sport’s Hall, in which each year group paraded around the hall. This was lead superbly, as always, by our Head boy and girl, JL and Yumin. There was also a fantastic turn out from parents, who showed their support for the event through the fabulous costumes on show.

We would also like to thank the FOBP, who very generously awarded each child with a small gift of encouragement and some larger prizes for those who made an extra special effort.

Author Visit This year travelling author David Bedford came to deliver some workshops with Years 1-6. He shared lots of interesting tips for writing, especially how the story process develops from start to finish and the different things that inspire him. He also spent time in Nursery and Reception sharing some of his own picture books.

Library Sleepover On Wednesday evening, 20 students from Years 4-6, who were nominated by their teachers, spent the night in the Primary Library. It began with a carousel of activities led

by Mrs Williams, Miss Jones, Miss Couper and Ms Pandora.

These included a roaming book scavenger hunt, creating their own picture flipbooks, sculpting their own potato superheroes and designing their own Harry Potter inspired Patronus. We then enjoyed some lovely snacks prepared

by Ms Hildebrande in the Year 2 shared area. This included homemade hot chocolate, oreos, marshmallows and more...

To finish the evening, we topped it all off by watching a movie whilst enjoying different varieties of popcorn. I would like to take this opportunity to personally express my delight at the behaviour and manners shown by all children; they were a true credit to the school and their parents!

‘Get Caught Reading’ Competition All week the school council were flooded with entries of children reading in the most unusual places. After a tough decision, Mr Fletcher announced the winners in our final assembly. Congratulations to Javi from 2RC who received third place, Areeya from 5MB second place and to Noemie from 3FS who took first prize. We certainly have some very creative and daring readers at Bangkok Prep!

Bookworm Quiz To conclude our week Mr Breen led an exciting quiz, in which each house competed head to head to be the bookworm champions! They were asked a whole host of questions relating to different book titles, heroes and villains, themes and more… Although it was a close call, ultimately Lion house were victorious! It was apparent from the noise level, that Years 1-6 thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Throughout the week the children have also enjoyed sharing their favourite books with their buddies from another class, listening to special guest readers and exploring the books for sale in the Undercroft.

All in all, it has been a busy but exciting week, and I would like to thank all staff and parents for dedicating their time and support to ensure that the week was enjoyed by all.

Eco Team Book Recycling Initiative Dear KS1 and KS2 Parents and Guardians, The Bangkok Prep Eco Team and class teachers are writing to inform you of a new initiative which we will introduce, with your support, this year.

In order to ensure the best possible transition from one academic year to another, all Maths and English books for students in KS1 and KS2 will be recycled at the end of this term. Then, all children will start a new Maths and English book in Term 3.

These books will then be taken with them to their new class at the end of the academic year.

This will allow for our students to present their best work during term 3, ready for their next teacher to analyse and prepare learning opportunities for them which not only support their learning but will challenge them to the very best of their abilities.

Over the past few years, the Eco Team at Bangkok Prep have put a very effective paper recycling program in place, where we are able to raise funds for projects and charity events by selling our scrap paper to recycling agents.

This new initiative gives us the opportunity to recycle a very large quantity of paper at the end of term 2 and also encourages the children to understand and participate in ways in which we can live more sustainably, as outlined in the Global Goals initiative.

We plan to recycle books children have used thus far in Maths and English on Monday 2nd April.

If you would prefer not to support our recycling program and would prefer to collect the books at the end of this term, please fill in this Google Form by Friday 30th March 2018: KS1 KS2 English and Maths Book request. It had also been sent to you via email.

FOBISIA Short Story Competition The Fobisia writing competition is an annual event, which provides a unique opportunity for children to flex their storytelling muscles. This year it was hosted by Patana School and the theme was ‘Watch’.

Many children from Years 3-6 submitted their stories to Miss Youlton, in the hope of representing Bangkok Prep in the competition, however only 1 story could be chosen for each category. After much deliberation by a select panel of teachers, the two representatives were chosen.

A huge congratulations to Minseo Kim from 4AB who will represent Bangkok Prep in the Years 3-4 category and to Elliot Fletcher from 5MB in the Years 5-6 category. Both of the stories were told from a unique perspective and captured their audience from start to finish.

Five stories will be shortlisted by a panel at Patana and then the finalists will be judged by writer, poet and recording artist, Donovan Christopher by the 30th March. If successful, the winner and two runners up will be presented with certificates and have their work published on the FOBISIA website for all to see.

Whatever the outcome for our representatives, they should feel proud of the level of excellence they have achieved so far!

BLINDSIGHTED by Minseo Kim 4AB After ten days of exhausting sailing, a brutal storm hit. The sea attacked us and our ship so aggressively that we began to sink. We lowered the smaller boats into the water and rowed frantically for the only island in sight.

But soon the boats surrendered to the mighty sea and we found ourselves underwater and struggling not to drown. With one powerful blow, the current pushed me forward toward the sandy shore. I lay there gasping for air and spitting up mouthfuls of salt water.

After some time, I called out for my father and my shipmates. And it was only after about a couple of hours that I realized I was the sole survivor. But there was no time for sadness or tears. I could sense that night was falling. I needed to find shelter. Blind, and with no knowledge of the dangers of the island, I cautiously felt my way to a number of trees just beyond the beach area, chose one, climbed up, and found a comfortable branch.

When I awoke, I could hear that the storm had stopped and the sea was calm. I climbed down and made my way back to the beach, leaving a trail of twigs and branches behind me so I could feel my way back. Perhaps some of the ship’s supplies had washed up on shore. Fortunately, they had: chests of food and water as well as medical supplies, clothes, and some knives and tools. I rescued them all and felt a brief moment of joy and hope.

After a few days of living between my tree post and the beach, I realized that my supplies were going to run out, and if I wanted to survive, I was going to have to explore the island, regardless of my lack of eyesight.

The next day, and every other day that followed for the next three months, I loaded my pack with some essentials and ventured off. As I walked, I heard, smelt, tasted and felt what I could not see with my eyes. Eventually, I could use my sense of smell like a compass: salty by the beach, woody and green by the trees, fresh by the waterfall, and clean ocean air on the hilltop. I started to feel safe and comfortable living on this deserted island.

However, as I was walking through the trees one day, I was suddenly struck on the head by something round and very solid.

I realized it was a monkey on top of a tree trying to open a coconut. I reached out below me and found the coconut, pulled out my axe and cut it in half, leaving one half on the ground for him and keeping the other half for myself. I guess he was very grateful because from that day on, he became my first and only friend on that deserted island. He also became my pair of eyes.

I no longer felt sad, alone or blind.

The Power of Sight by Elliot Fletcher 5MB Out of all the muscles in your body, the muscles that control the eyes are the most active. I learnt that when I was studying to be an optometrist. I’m James by the way. I’ve always been fascinated by the sense of sight and I can’t imagine living without it. Some of my patients have fizzy fuzzy vision, some can’t see colours and others have no sight at all. But there is one particular person I’d like to tell you about.

A few years ago I visited a Home for Children with disabilities. I confess, I wasn’t looking forward to the trip, I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to communicate enough with my patients. As I arrived I could almost feel the sadness around me. There were children sprawled on the matted floor whining and groaning and I could smell cleaning product nearly covering the horrible stink of vomit.

All the eye tests were going fine. I was on the last appointment with a boy slumped in a wheelchair with a name badge reading ‘Jim’ pinned to the front of his shirt. ‘Please could you look this way?’ I said. Jim continued to stare the other way. ‘Can you see this board I’m holding?’ No response. I thought that he was ignoring me but then, with a pang of shock, I realised he must be deaf. I followed his gaze and saw that he was looking at my lunch. I held it out to him and he blinked twice. I pointed to Jim’s mouth. Again he blinked twice so I shyly took out a segment of orange and put it in his mouth. In no time the whole orange was gobbled! I felt amazed that we had been able to communicate using only sight!

After that I came on regular visits to see Jim and help him communicate more. I made a board with letters and pictures and taught him to spell and point using movement of his eyes. My first impressions of Jim were completely incorrect; he was actually really clever and, even though people didn’t notice it, a beautiful boy on the inside. I started bringing books and models and found that he was particularly interested in planes. Together, we studied how planes are made and I couldn’t help but think that it was even more complicated than the eye!

One year later I had adopted Jim and we were going on our first holiday to Hawaii. Of course, we travelled by plane! In the airport we went to the observation deck and watched planes taking off. I’d made special arrangements with the airline for a first class seat to be fitted with support cushions to help Jim sit up. Once on the plane and in the air Jim was settling in and positively loving the food! It was 10pm and everyone had their windows closed but Jim was far too excited to sleep.

Suddenly, Jim started blinking frantically! I got out his letters board and he spelt out with blinks the word ‘wing’. I looked out the window and saw that the tip of the wing had snapped off and a tiny crack was splintering along it. From all of our study we both knew that we didn’t have more than 10 minutes to land the plane safely. We alerted the crew and braced for landing over the sea!

TISAC Boys Under 11 League Runners-Up After a good first round of matches in the TISAC league (Won 2; Lost 1) and needing to win every game of round 2, to be crowned TISAC League Champions, the under 11 Bulldogs fell just short. After an opening game defeat against St Andrews 71, not even a brave final game draw against league champions, Ascot, was enough to secure the title.

The Bulldogs began with a disappointing defeat. Never reaching their usual level of performance, they were outplayed by St Andrews 71. A second half goal from Avi was not enough to avoid a 3-1 defeat.

With TRAILL unable to make it, all teams were awarded a 3-0 victory. So, the last game against Ascot was pivotal. Because of the re-emergence of 71 (St Andrews), Prep now needed at least a draw against the all-conquering Ascot, who so far had won every game, in order to hold on to second place. First place was no longer an option.

Like a flash, a vastly improved Prep stormed into a 3-0 lead. Two goals from Avi and an incredibly struck free kick, from the halfway line, by Nicholas, moved the Bulldogs into a strong position. However, a goal just before half-time from Ascot, meant the game was far from over. Avi completed his hat-trick in the second half and, at 4-1, the game looked over. However, three late strikes (including one in the very last minute), all from outside the goal area, meant the game finished 4-4. Despite the disappointment, the Bulldogs achieved the one point that they needed and finished in, a very commendable, second place.

Shark Guardians Visit The Shark Guardians are a UK Charity that focus on marine and shark conservation worldwide. They run educational programs, research projects and diving expeditions. The team will be visiting to run workshops on marine preservation for the Key Stage 2 students on Tuesday the 27th of March. The day will start with an assembly for Key Stage 2 then they will work with year groups for the rest of the day. This is an exciting opportunity for students to learn about the importance of ocean preservation as well as learning about food chains and interesting facts about large predators. At the end of the day students will have an opportunity to buy Shark Guardian merchandise such as t-shirts and wristbands.

Letter from the Head of Secondary Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues, Many of our students had a very challenging two days last Sunday and Monday whilst taking part in the World Scholar’s Cup. 36 Students honed their debating and thinking skills to solve a multitude of problems. There were many individual success stories but the headlines make very rewarding reading as we brought home five trophies, with three 2nd places, and numerous other top 10s. This is a great development on last year and I would like to thank Mr Morris and his team of teachers for working with the students to perform so well. Many of these students will be in action again on Sunday as we will be hosting the Tournament of Minds event to over 500 students at our T77 Campus. These are both very high profile enrichment-style events and we are happy to see our students take full advantage of the opportunities given to them.

School Photo sessions have dominated this week and I am sure you will be looking forward to the final products once finished.

We managed to get some great group photos of the whole secondary school on Tuesday as well as each Key Stage. These will be hung with great pride as the first group photos at T77 and I am sure they will be the first in a long history.

Today had an environmental focus as we celebrated Green Day. Student leaders managed a food waste collection competition over the week and then orchestrated a Trashion Show in assembly.

Many students took part by buying the student designed T-shirt and wore them with their uniforms. Mr Sillett was the eventual winner although Megan was very fashionable in a beachcomber dress.

Finally, the most eagerly awaited news of the year was revealed by our Head students, Helena and Josh. The 2018 Prom will be at the Radisson Blu on Saturday 23rd June. This is open to Year 11/12/13 students, tickets will be on sale after Songkran.

World Scholars Cup Last weekend, our students from Bangkok Prep once again participated in the World Scholars Cup. Being the underdogs in this event, with only one year of prior experience, we have brought back lots of very impressive results this year including: 5 Trophies and over 140 medals combined, with all of our participating teams qualifying for the global round this summer. We also had lots of top 10 placings, and Kazu achieved a Bangkok Prep first by being the Champion Student in the Arts Quiz.

I believe that I say this on behalf of all my fellow scholars who participated that we all had an amazing experience at this event. Even our newer members that we have brought on board our journey with us have all said that they had lots of fun and are definitely looking forward to taking it a step further at the next phase: The Global Round. We have all made our teachers and parents extremely proud and have also contributed to giving Bangkok Prep a big name in this event. It reached the point that now we’re being regarded within the community as one of the “dominant forces” going into the global round this summer. Hopefully, we will see more amazing results, such as we have in this round, in the future rounds and I wish all of you the very best!

FOBISIA Mathematics competition, Shanghai

On March the 8th, eight of the very best mathematicians from Year 7 and Year 8 set off to the British International School Shanghai, Puxi to partake in the annual FOBISIA Mathematics competition.

Pyncha, Proud, Joy, Tara, Ethan, Rishabh (all Year 8), Dome and Jihyo (both Year 7) had been successful earlier in the year in the selection competition beating off fierce competition of numerous entrants. After months of preparation during the After School Activity, they were hoping that their hard work would pay off and they could do Bangkok Prep proud.

Day one saw the opening ceremony with lots of interesting maths puzzles and displays of Chinese heritage and culture but after a long day travelling, it was time to rest ready for the first day of competition.

Day two brought the competition to a start and saw activities including The Card Trick, Individual multiple choice, individual practical task as well as Unlock the Box and many more. Both teams of students participated well and worked well both individually and as a team when required. The scores for the day were unknown, but the day ended with all students pleased with their contributions. After the competition had finished for the day, we were treated to a river cruise along the river Bund where we saw what an amazing skyline Shanghai has to offer.

A truly wonderful experience.

Day three opened with The Towers of Hanoi challenge and was followed by a Ken Ken puzzle, a Trigonometry challenge and a crossnumber puzzle. Once more both teams conducted themselves well and tried their hardest to complete all the challenges to the best of their ability, even the most-tricky ones!

There were lots of laughs and friendly competition along the way.

Day three culminated in a construction challenge, and whilst team 2 did produce something resembling a crane, team 1’s effort left a lot to be desired! After a brief presentation ceremony it was back to the hotel for the gala dinner and some games. It was an excellent few days and the students have a lot to feel proud of.

Their teamwork, dedication and encouragement of each other was commendable and it was a real pleasure to accompany such polite and well-mannered young people to such a prestigious event. Although no major trophies were won, both Ethan and Pyncha finished in the top 20% of competitors, there were over 200 in total, which is an excellent achievement. Out of 56 teams, Team 1 from Bangkok Prep (Ethan, Rishabh, Pyncha and Proud) finished in 18th position overall. Again, a great achievement.

We will be taking at least one team to this event again next year, so if you are interested make sure you keep looking out for the selection event.

TISAC Senior Choral Day On Friday 9th March, students from the Senior Choir travelled to Charter International School with Mr Watters and Khun Tik, to take part in the TISAC Senior Choral Day. Students from several TISAC schools attended the event, creating a large four part choir. The students worked on two previously unseen pieces; ‘Shining Moon’ a traditional Thai song and ‘When I Grow Up’ written by Tim Minchen, from the musical Matilda. The students worked hard to prepare the songs.

They started the day in sectionals working on their specific part before the whole choir came together to practise. The final Gala performance was a huge success and was performed in front of an audience of friends and family. Well done to all involved!

Book Week - A Week of Wonderful Words!

Last Week Bangkok Prep was transformed as we celebrated Book Week! Many events took place including talks and workshops from visiting authors and poets, a House Quiz, a Library Cafe, a Doodle Challenge, Filming book ‘trailers’, Creating book review flags, and lots and lots of reading time.

Each Faculty dressed up and created a ‘Living Window’ each break time, to much amusement from the students, and most students dressed up on Friday as their favourite book characters.

The English Faculty and the Library Team would like to thank all the students, parents and staff who joined in with the activities last week. Good literacy is the key to success in life and we hope that many students have discovered or renewed their love of reading and found some new authors to try from the events of last week.

I would like to thank Anette Pollner who made the creative writing workshop such a wonderful experience. During the workshop, we were taught the way of writing in a relatively short time with deep focus by forgetting the existence of others, so that we could really garner the ideas and seek that true inspiration. She built on how there really are no boundaries when it comes to creative writing, but instead relying on the flow of imagination. I also grasped the prominent idea that Anette Pollner had been emphasising on which was to write with the feeling of enjoyment, to have the freedom of thought, and to never restrict yourself on the characters and objects that were going to be incorporated into the story.

Not only had I learned many new techniques and procedures to approach writing, but my fear to start putting pen to paper was almost non-existent or virtually reached a vanishing point.

This was in part due to how she constantly reminded us to keep writing and to abandon the use of repeatedly going over the previous texts and in a bid to improve it persistently, because it would slow down your progress and wouldn’t keep you on track. Most importantly, she highlighted how to not be afraid to ever commence on any piece of writing, to never fear to start which I think is highly essential and is a strategy that could be applied for writers at any stage. Poets...

The assembly with the guests from Bangkok Lyrical Lunacy was truly entertaining and educational. They taught us a great life skill, which is to not fear public speaking. First, they interacted with us by making us answer questions and presenting many slam poetries in a wonderful way and sharing entertaining experiences of their lives. Then they made all of us sing our favourite songs together, at the same time. Moreover, they introduced us to an open mike challenge, which is when anyone who wants to share their talents are welcome to, in which a couple of students participated and inspired other students to join in. In the end, they introduced the concept of Cypher to us, which is a circle made by gathered people and someone showing a talent. They asked everyone to join in and a lot of students gathered up on the stage and joined in. Furthermore, I think that the techniques they taught us really helped to reduce the fear of public speaking for everyone!

The workshop started with everyone getting into groups and being assigned to write a list on a topic Pablo and Rory told.

Everyone was taking part in the activity and seemed to enjoy themselves. After a representative from each group read out their list, they were told to write a poem about their most vivid memory. Everyone who wanted to share their ideas was asked to go to the front and present their poems. Next they told us to add some metaphors from the list we made earlier in our poems to improve them. Pablo and Rory were both really co-operative throughout the workshop and answered all the questions satisfyingly. Everyone who attended the workshop took away a lot of skills with them, which will help them to be a better poet in the future!

An Author...

The assembly with the guest author Annette Pollner was a really creative insight in to becoming a better author. She taught us how to use the sounds we hear to find the imagination inside us. In addition, we also learned how the atmosphere where we write can affect the mood of our writing. Overall, I truly believe that the skills we learned will benefit our writing!

SECONDARY NEWS On the 14th of March, two poets came into our school. Their names were Pablo and Rory and they were visiting us from Bangkok’s Lyrical Lunacy. A collection of us from Years 7 and 8 attended a workshop hosted by these poets. To start us off we listed numerous things under a category the poets gave us.

Our category was ‘Things in Town’, but others included ‘Yellow Things’ and ‘Places You Want To Go’. While we listed these in teams of four, we came up with team names - some better than others. After we presented our collection of objects, and even emotions, we were told to think of a memory. Something we could remember very well, and the feelings linked to it. We had a few minutes to come up with a poem about it individually.

Then, one after another, we volunteered to read ours out to the room (about five or six students did so, including me). The topics ranged from splitting a chin open to scuba diving. The poets then commented on our work and informed us of some tips, then we were free to ask them questions before leaving.

It was a really enjoyable creative experience.

During Book Week, we were greeted by two extraordinary poets who not only taught us how to write a good poem, but also taught us how to recognise our problems and how to face them and turn them into something relatable. During assembly we were all filled with excitement as we got a chance to participate and learn how to connect with each other, not just from words but also through music. Some of our classmates participated in a cypher, which was a new thing to all of us.

In the workshops we were told how to write a poem by using tools such as listing. This helped us in many ways with what we do in our current English lessons it awakened a creative poet in all of us. Overall this experience was remarkable and I would like to thank Rory and Pablo for their hard work and dedication in teaching us brilliant and fascinating things we can do with our past experiences.

First of all, I would like to thank Mr Rory and Mr Pablo for coming to Bangkok Prep to spread the joy and excitement of slam poetry to us students and also giving us excellent life advice. The fact that you told us to be ourselves and have courage in what we do is something we will always remember and use forever.

Mr Rory and Mr Pablo also taught us the real meaning of slam poetry, it is to express your feelings, bring joy to other people and make a change. This doesn’t only occur in slam poetry, this occurs in other things such as performing music, giving a speech, acting in plays and basically everything in life.

In addition, Mr Rory and Mr Pablo have inspired me to keep writing, be creative and imaginative. Even on days when I might not be able to think of things to write about, instead I can just make lists of things that I hear, see, smell, taste and touch. Just keep writing, there are no terrible consequences in writing, there is no such thing as writing too much.

Finally, I shall end this with my last thank you to Mr Sherburn, Ms O’Sullivan and all the other teachers who have organised Book Week so well and who have invited Mr Rory and Mr Pablo to come to our school, I am so grateful to be chosen for the Poetry Workshop that I enjoyed so much. It has helped me to become a better writer and most importantly, a better person.

I also had so much fun in the entire week of Book Week. I can’t wait for next year’s Book Week to come so I can enjoy this magical moment again!

On the second day of Book Week (13th March) we had a wonderful author, Anette Pollner, visit to inspire us and give ideas on how to write. This talk encouraged us to look into what she called the universe inside us and write what we see, hear, or feel in that personal space. Another thing she helped us overcome was how to avoid sitting and staring at a blank page.

How to turn every sound you hear into a story, how even your breath, which you hear every second, could be turned into a captivating story. She also gave us advice about redrafting our stories, for any future authors out there who want to pursue a career in that field, or to improve in English class. We also listened to an extract from one of books called ’Graveyards of the Banks: I did it for the money’ which is the first book of her Graveyards of the Banks series. We then got a chance to write down what we think would happen as a story. That one hour was truly a great experience for everyone especially for the people that are interested in this topic.

Secondary Songkran Celebrations On the final day of term Thursday 5th April, the Thai Department are pleased to invite the Secondary School Students to our first T77 Songkran Ceremony and Fair.

Students will mark this important event with a ceremony together and will then enjoy an extended break time.

A new Songkran Fair is being started this year and will be a chance for staff and students to try some traditional food and drinks, play some games and purchase some products.

The students have been designing, practicing and preparing for the Fair in their Thai Studies lessons. Please allow your child to bring some extra spending money to join in –all money made will be donated to a school charity.

Traditional dress and Songkran clothing can be worn on the day.
