In Remembrance of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej: Bangkok Prep Particpates in Nationwide Singing of the Royal Anthem On Tuesday morning the Prime Minister led the entire country in paying respect to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej with simultaneous performances of the National and Royal anthems held nationwide.

Bangkok Prep were honoured to be able to join this national event, that was followed by Thai staff and parents participating in the “Rurm Palang Haeng Kwarm Pakdee” ceremony; where Thai staff and parents pledged their loyalty to the Royal Family in front of the King’s portrait.

We will continue HM King Bhumibol’s remembrance on Friday 2nd December with a ceremony in the Sports Hall starting at 9am.

We will be singing the following songs: - Nai Luang Khong Pan Din - Pan Din Khong Rao (Alexandra) - King's Anthem accompanied by our school orchestra We will then welcome one of Bangkok Prep’s parents, Khun Niwat Lertcharanratana, the director of SJC band whose 50 piece orchestra will play a selection of the king's compositions for us. The chosen songs are: - The Royal Guard March - Oh I Say - Smile (Yim Suu) - Sadudee Maha Raja

Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards On Tuesday Bangkok Prep was honoured to be the host for the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards Thailand 2016. Over 250 participants and guests attended, including our guest speaker, Margaret Tongue, the Deputy Head of Mission for the British Embassy Bangkok. Congratulations to Kimberley Goodburn on receiving Award for the High Achievement in Applied Information & Communication Technology. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all staff and students involved in organising this extremely successful event. We would particularly like to thank the Sixth Form students who volunteered to help on the day and who were fantastic representatives of our school and it’s values.

IGCSE Awards Ceremony 2016 On Thursday 17th November all of Year 12 gathered in the auditorium with their parents in a ceremony to receive their official IGCSE certificates.

It was a great achievement for our Year 12 students as the certificates are evidence of the hard work and effort they have put in over the last five years in Secondary school. Parents and teachers of Yr 12 were joined by Years 10 and 9 to watch the ceremony. It helped to show the younger students what is expected of them at IGCSE - and what great effort each and every student has put into his or her studies.

There was a lot to celebrate with many students being named for gaining A or A* examination grades. Ms Wilsonlock opened the ceremony with a speech reminding students of how far they have come since beginning at Bangkok Prep and Mrs Thomas-Peter gave a short speech of congratulations to round off the event.

Lin (12SR) played a beautiful rendition of ‘River Flows in You’ by the Korean composer Yiruma which finished the proceedings on a suitably serene note.

There was a lot of picture taking and many pleased parents in the crowd.

Congratulations to all our current Year 12 for the IGCSE results.

All the staff at Bangkok Prep are very proud of your achievements.

UPCOMING EVENTS Operation Christmas Boxes After last year’s success, Bangkok Prep Primary School are launching ‘Operation Christmas Boxes’ again to support the children of the Mercy Centre, Thailand. The Mercy Centre is a shelter for children who live on the streets. This Christmas, there are 620 children of the centre who will go without gifts, unless we support them! We are asking for generous donations to be made in the form of a ‘Christmas Box’, so each child of the Mercy Centre receives a gift that belongs to them.

Charity Donations Needed!

The CAP Committee is pleased to inform you about our upcoming charity event for this year, “Sunny Smile Donation Drive”. The main aim of this event is to donate as much as possible to the charity ‘Sunny Smile Foundation” who are committed in helping the people of Mae Sot, which lies in between the border of Thailand-Burma. We will be collecting donations from now until 12th Dec. We need you to donate toiletries and used clothing - both adult and child clothes.

Students are collecting in their tutor groups and each group has to collect as much as possible to win a pizza party for the class!

Parents who are willing to chip in donations are also most welcome, there will be a basket kept in the undercroft for donations to be put in.

Your gesture of kindness will not only put a smile on their beautiful faces but will also make their lives a little better.

Puppy Cup 2017 Date: Saturday, 14th January On Saturday, 14th of January 2017, Bangkok Prep will hold its 2nd annual Puppy Cup swim meet for developing squad swimmers. We expect to have more than 400 swimmers this year competing from more than 10 international schools.

This event is an initiative of Bangkok Prep to provide competition experience to those primary aged swimmers who have not yet had a taste of inter - school competition. The emphasis is on fun, relaxed competition and race day excitement.

We found that many of those developing swimmers who participated in last year’s Puppy Cup, have now become productive members of our higher ability squads. Bangkok Prep anticipates that we will have 40 plus swimmers to represent the Bulldogs at this year’s event, and these swimmers will come from pre squad and those that have been selected from Year 1 and 2.

The numbers for last year’s Puppy Cup were a total of 120 swimmers from 5 schools so Bangkok Prep is very pleased and proud that this event is now on the radar of more schools, so more students now have the wonderful opportunity of competing.

It is a great family day with a lot of fun and excitement – please join us and cheer on our developing Bulldogs!

PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Dear Parents, Children and Colleagues, I was delighted to see so many of you attending Wednesday’s Key Stage 2 Sports Day. I am sure you agree that these types of events are an essential aspect of high quality education. Taking part in sporting activities can be very rewarding for children. It is well documented that Physical Education can be used to raise the self-esteem of young people and give them confidence.

Exercise and sports participation has long been established as an important factor in reducing the risk of many physical problems such as cardiovascular disease and obesity. Sport has many physical benefits, but there are also many other benefits that taking part in sport can provide, this makes sport an important part of each individual’s life. We at Bangkok Prep believe that Sports Days provide a wonderful opportunity to inspire and help children get active and participate in sport. I would like to thank the Bangkok Prep PE Department for their hard work during the planning and administering of this event. I would also like to thank FOBP for the welcome ice lollies – they were very well received by all participants.

Key Stage 2 Sports Day On Wednesday the entire KS2 students and staff spent the day at Ramkhamhaeung Stadium, taking part in their KS2 Sports Day. All students participated in Javelin, Shot Put or Basketball Push, Standing Triple Jump or 3-Springs Jump and Long Jump.

All students took part in one or more track events, which included 60m, 100m, 600m or 800m, 4x100m Relay and the 6x30m Shuttle Relay.

The sound in the stadium was electric; from the students cheering on their house mates, parents cheering from the stands and teachers cheering from the sidelines. The vibrancy of colour from the house t-shirts made for an exciting day; to see which houses were being represented in the races and on the field.

Thank you to all the parents who attended and cheered on the children, it was fantastic to see so many of you at the stadium. All the children deserved their participation ribbons for being so enthusiastic and energetic at every event.

Students enjoyed a well-deserved ice cream treat with their lunch (thank you to our FOBP for the ice cream). Lots of children placed 1st-4th in the field events and the track finals in their age group and earned themselves a place on the podium and received a medal. There was lots of bling on the children at the end of the day. Well done!

Our Year 10 student helpers who were our timekeepers and who ran the stations along with the KS2 teachers were a credit to Bangkok Prep, they displayed an excellent example of student leadership throughout the entire day. Our teachers, events team and maintenance crew work tirelessly before, on and after the day to make sure all the children had a fabulous time and everything ran smoothly. It was an excellent day and wonderful to see so many happy faces.

I will post photos on Firefly as soon as I receive them from the photographer and I hope to share school record winners with the KS2 students before the Christmas holiday. In the meantime I hope you enjoy a small sample of the photos below.

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWS Dear students, parents and colleagues Our Y11 students have been hard at work this week taking their Y11 Mock Exams that will finish next Tuesday. Mock exams are an integral part of the KS4 curriculum, they not only give students an experience of the real thing to be held in May/June next year but they allow students to hone and develop their revision and timemanagement skills, whilst working under pressure in stressful situations. Teacher analysis of results allow for tailored intervention strategies to develop each individual. Finishing the exams this side of Christmas also allows students and teachers a full and unimpeded Term Two to realise targets and goals.

Our KS4 curriculum ends in the sitting of external IGCSE Examinations at the close of Y11. We administer many Cambridge International Examinations as an examination centre. We were therefore very proud to host over 100 students from across Thailand in the receipt of Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards in a ceremony welcoming over ten predominantly international schools. Amongst award recipients was our very own Kim Goodburn in Y13. The event was successfully organised by a large team at Bangkok Prep, ably led by Tia Court-Smith our Secondary Deputy Head. In what might be a first for the awards ceremony, we chose to have our own students lead the event and manage significant areas. Our Head Girl and Boy, Punn and Krit were an absolute credit to the school and showed great poise and leadership throughout.

Our Y7 students might think IGCSEs and Mock exams don’t concern them but we are as focused on their development as we are on exam classes. I therefore hope you had the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with his or her teachers at Thursday’s Student Led Conference. It is very important that students are given the opportunity to share their learning experiences by celebrating successes and reflecting on failures. Learning is a never ending journey and we must ensure students remain engaged and motivated to succeed.

International Day On the 15th of November we held our annual International Day. This was a whole school event where both Primary and Secondary were involved in celebrating different cultures. The Secondary School were split into houses (Panthera, Ursus, Sabre, Surus) and had to work with people from different year groups to produce a 2minute documentary. They were allocated countries that aren’t represented in the Bangkok Prep student body, making us more aware of other cultures around the world.

The aim of the documentary was to explore and analyse the customs and traditions of the different cultures. They were judged upon 4 criteria: the content, analysis, entertainment value and degree to which the brief had been met. Each group also had to create a quiz consisting of 10 questions based on the documentaries that would be answered by other groups. The documentaries were edited by the students and then shown to the judges at the end of the day to decide the winning documentary.

During the day, we went around chatting to the team leaders of each country, who were the oldest students in school. It was very impressive to see student leadership and great teamwork without any help from the staff members. We also witnessed students getting out of their comfort zone to recreate the festivities of their assigned country. In the younger years, the students were assigned various African countries such as Zimbabwe, Ghana and many more. Their activities included: painting, clay sculpting and rewriting folk tales. Overall, International Day was a great success and lots of fun; we hope others are looking forward to next year!

Fun Psychology Club: People Do What?!

In this club, students are exposed to famous psychological studies and findings that question what we are capable of as human beings. Students also become familiar with trending applications of psychological research. Here is what students have to say about their discoveries thus far.

Nozomi Osada, 11PL, on Stanley Milgram’s Experiment Stanley Milgram wanted to investigate how people will react when they are told to harm other people. The results of this experiment was that 65% of the participants continued to administer the highest level of electric shocks possible in the experiment. I was really surprised because the experiment showed that it doesn’t take much for ordinary people to harm innocent people. Also, even though the action was taken by the participants, they claimed that it wasn’t their fault, but the experimenter’s. This helps explain the psychology behind the second World War—how soldiers might have not felt responsible for their actions and blamed them on Hitler. I think everyone should be responsible for any action they take, so it was surprising to learn about conditions that make this difficult.

Dej Chiravachradej, 10BW, on Positive Psychology & the Gratitude Experiment In Positive Psychology, there is a field of study devoted to strengths (ie honesty). There are 24 universal character strengths, which means that anywhere in the world, the character strengths will be recognized. Out of all of these character strengths, some seem to increase happiness more than others, such as gratitude.

Gratitude means having awareness for the good things in your life that happen and being thankful for them. In one experiment, people were told to think of a person who has immensely impacted their life. Then, they were told to write as much as they could about that person. Finally, they had to call that person (if possible) and read the paragraph to them.

The results show that happiness increases by a huge amount by expressing gratitude. I also tried this task in the club, and then in my own time.

Hugo Paoprapun, 10BW, on VIA Strengths Survey & the Gratitude Experiment I found out what my five signature strengths are, according to the VIA Strengths Survey. It was easy and good to do, since it tells you what kind of person you are, how you might deal with trouble in life, and where you can improve. Some people might disagree that using your strengths to increase happiness might not work, but you just need to give it a try. For example, I wrote a letter to someone that inspired me and made me be who I am today. Writing the letter will already help you feel good, but calling the person up and reading them the letter will make you feel light. Give it a try.

PE News FOBISIA U13 Games Selection Dear Parents, The first round of selection letters have been sent by email to parents of those students selected for the U13 FOBISIA Squad taking part in the U13 FOBISIA Games in Beijing.

The selection has been based on the teams (Football, Swimming, Basketball) the students have taken part in this year and the ability and attitude of students in PE lessons.

A second round of selection letters will be sent out on Wednesday 7th December.

In January the Final squad will be presented to the school and to parents through Prepazine. The training schedule will also be shared.

U11 Boys Football Team On a sizzling hot Sunday morning, the Bangkok Prep Bulldogs, Under 11 boys football team, embarked on a tough day of competition at the Harrow Cup. After a slow start, a 1-0 victory against St Andrews Sathorn, the boys quickly got into their stride and continued to get better and better with every game.

Next was Pattana. Leading 2-1 with only a few seconds to go, Pattana scored to tie the game. However, rather than dropping their heads, the result seemed to invigorate our young Bulldogs; leading to a winning run which would eventually end in glory.

St Andrews Samakee were the first to meet the wrath of the dominant and reinvigorated Bulldogs; brushed aside 8-0. Then it was Harrow's turn. A 3-0 victory in this game meant a spot in final had been secured.

With the disappointment of the first encounter still fresh in the mind, our gallant boys faced off with Bangkok Pattana in the final. Leaving their best performance for last, Pattana were blown away by a colossal first half performance. Superb goals from Krish (6KL) and Cameron (6SD) made it 2-0 at half time; but really it could have been a lot more. Pattana pulled a goal back in the second half to make for a nervy finish but the Bulldogs held on to win their first trophy of the season.

Great effort, lads. You were superb all day and thoroughly deserved the victory. Squad: Dome, Filippo, Artin, Ashvin, Cameron, Yuto, Krish, Nicholas, Avi and Akira.

U11 Girls Football team The Under 11 Girls' team started the day off in perfect style by taking a win from the first fixture. The team showed a real fighting spirit and fantastic teamwork. Things got trickier from then on, but the level of team work and determination in the face of adversity continued, and they battled on until the end. The girls should all be very proud of their contributions and they really made me proud to be a part of Bangkok Prep! Squad: Katinn, Vivian, Petch , Poey, Iva, Isabel, Alicia, Yu Min, Sayuri, Vikki and Bani

U13 Girls Football team The Under 13 Girls played some fantastic football on their way to an impressive second place in the Harrow Youth tournament, rather unluckily being beaten in the final by a KIS side we had already beaten earlier in the day. The day started impressively with a slick Prep performance against ICS and a 4-0 win, Charlotte S starting the scoring with a longrange strike. The top form continued with Charlotte C and Malissa finding their scoring boots as we comfortably beat Harrow (4-0) and KIS (2-1) before beating ICS (2-0) again in the Semi-Final. The final proved a game too far but I am sure the squad will learn from this valuable experience and win plenty of trophies in the future. It was particularly pleasing to see a real team effort with all nine playing an important role and Mali a confident and vocal captain. Squad: Mali (Captain), Lanna, Tubtim, Charlotte S, Charlotte C, Pyncha, Pyn, Nam, Malissa.

U11 Girls Basketball Team Well done to the U11 Girls Basketball team for their 4-2 win against Regents on Thursday. It was our last match and first win of the season before our TISAC competition on Saturday at Wells. All the players went into each quarter determined to make a difference.
