Greetings From Advisor of PENABUR INTERNATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL Adri Lazuardi
Greetings, Human talent is gifted by the Lord almighty God. It is truly an enormous beauty when the talent becomes a personal gift to be used as it is. When we have beautiful voices, it becomes perfect at the time we utilize the voices correctly in the form of melody and song to praise God’s creation with such feeling, love, beauty and greatness. Each song, psalm, and eulogy accompanied with the sound of drum, piano, percussion, and other instruments enhances the glory like angels in Heaven singing joyfully, praising and glorifying God the Creator. This ambience is again presented in PENABUR International Choir Festival (PICF) which will be held on 5 – 9 September 2017.

We learned from Joshua and his people tearing down the wall of Jericho through their melody (Joshua 6:1-27) and from Jehoshaphat and all Judah defeating 3 nations all at once (2 Chronicles 20:1-30), and from Paul and Silas’ hymns that released them from the chains (Acts 16:2526), and many more examples in the Bible that God’s power works through songs and praises. Thus, a different paradigm is to happen in viewing this PICF; it is not merely a choir competition, but each group is to sing, giving their best talent and gift to God through togetherness and collaboration in one harmony that can be enjoyed by each human being who sees and listens.
PENABUR International Choir Festival is the continuation of Festival Paduan Suara (Choir Festival) whose participants now extend to other countries. This PICF is a longing of BPK PENABUR Jakarta to present God’s children with their talents and gifts performing songs and instruments, and creating innovative performance. How great His power

PENABUR International Choir Festival 2017 is held again on 5-9 September 2017 in Jakarta. This festival is the 3rd PENABUR Choir Festival and now has reached an international scale to become an International Choir Festival.

The success of this Choir Festival has delivered a very satisfying result to BPK PENABUR Jakarta Foundation, not only in Indonesia’s education field, but also in developing the nation’s character through culture and the art of singing development. Music is a language which is very easy to understand without any shackles or barriers of clan, religion, race, or language. Music also introduces noble values like honesty, discipline,
persistence confidence, cooperation, tolerance, respect, and obedience. Music can lead Indonesia and the world to a beautiful, understanding, respectful, and happier humanity. Through music, nations of the world can cooperate in peace and joy, and can compete without having to hurt anyone. We invite you to take part in this PENABUR International Choir Festival. ACTIVITIES a. choir clinic
Participants may join this particular activity by registering themselves in Choir Clinic. This activity is FREE for those who register in Evaluation Activities and submit payment proof of registration fee at the latest on Monday, 13 February 2017. Every day, the participants will be given a specific time to explore and apply the theories that are given by choir experts. This activity is held for 30 minutes. Each participant will be awarded a certificate of participation at the end of program.
b. workshop This event is open for the public, including singers, conductors, and choir groups from Indonesia and overseas.
Every participant will gain knowledge and skills in choir by being actively involved in atelier practice, workshop, collaboration, and practices conducted by choir experts.

This workshop will be held on 5- 9 September 2017. At the end of the workshop, every participant will be given a certificate of participation.

c. meet the juries
Every choir group may send a maximum 7 representatives to follow this activity. This activity is FREE. To join, every group should register at the activity. During the event, every participant will be given time to consult and ask for review from jury members about the previous performance so the participants can improve their upcoming performance.
The groups that registered specifically for the Friendship Concert can join this activity. The other participants may also attend this event for free only if the slot is still empty. This event will be closed until it is full. In this activity, each participant will be given an opportunity to share vision, mission, and testimonial after their participation in #PICF2017. The participants may also build friendships with other participants and interact closely with viewers. At the end of this event, participant will obtain a certificate of participation.
e. sunday service
The Sunday Service might only be attended by participants who officially registered in #PICF2017. To be able to perform at this event, choirs may register to join this activity. Each participant perform at a local church in Jakarta, administered by the committee. Through this program, it is expected that the choirs will massively impact the churches in Jakarta and its surroundings. The participants who successfully perform at this event will be given a certificate as a participant in Sunday Service #PICF2017.

This event is open for all participants from Indonesia and overseas. The event will present national and international judges. Each category might be followed by at least 12 participants for each group in category A and 16 people for other categories. The maximum participants are 50 people for a choir group. #PICF 2017 Choir Competition has 8 categories, which are:
CATEGORIES FOR SCHOOL
a. kindergarten choir
This competition is held for students at the kindergarten level with voice S(A)(A).
b. primary school choir
This competition is for primary students from level 1 to 6 (age of 6-12) with voice SA/SS(A)(A).
c. junior high school choir
This competition is for secondary students from grade 7 to 9 (age of 12-15) with voice S(S)A(A)/SA (T)(B).

This competition is for secondary students from grade 10 to 12 (age of 15-18) with voice S(S)A(A)/SA (T)(B).
e. mixed youth school choir

This competition is for students who are in a university, church, or any other choral groups. The participants’ age should be between 17-25 with voice SATB.
• Each group may only join one of these categories (A, B, C, D, & E) and may add another category (F, G, or H). • Characteristics and difficulties of songs should be adjusted with participants. • With maximum of 10 minutes of total performance time, the participants are expected to sing 2 kinds of songs. • At least 1 song should be A-capella for all categories except categories A, B, & C. Those three categories may use accompaniment for both songs. • It is suggested to choose a song that shows the contrast and quality of participants’ voice.
• The participants are not allowed to choose songs from similar genre and refer to other categories. The committee has rights to change if the participants give a list of songs that is more appropriate with another category. • Choreography is allowed but it is not required. • Piano accompaniment must be provided for songs. • Regarding age of the participants on these school categories, they are allowed to have 10 % quota of year 2017 alumni from the total of participants.

CATEGORIES WITHOUT AGE LIMIT f. folklore
- This category is open for participants from schools, universities, churches, or any choir group. - The songs must be folksongs. - It is recommended to present folksongs from participants’ of origin. - Each participant should give music scores, including details regarding origins and meanings of the songs in both English and Indonesian. - Participants are not allowed to use amplifiers for vocals and/or instruments. However, participants may use traditional instruments, traditional costumes, and choreography. - Each performance will last no more than 10 minutes for performing two songs.
g. gospel and spiritual
- This category is open for participants from schools, universities, churches, or any choir group. - This category should present Gospel & Spiritual songs from traditional AfroAmerica. - Modern gospel and African folksongs are not permitted.

- One of the song choices should be presented in A-cappella. - Participants may not use amplifier. - Each performance will last no more than 10 minutes for performing two songs.
h. musica sacra

- This category is open for participants from schools, universities, churches, or any choir group. - This category refers to conventional until modern sacred songs. - Christian songs that are not included in sacred songs are not authorized to be performed. - One of the songs should be presented in A-cappella. - Participants may not use amplifier. - Each performance will last no more than 10 minutes for performing two songs with conditions as followed: One song from a composer who was born before 1800. One song from a composer who was born after 1800.
g. grand prix competition
The participants who will attend the Grand Prix Competition are the winners of every category in #PICF2017 Choir Competition and other choir groups who are recommended by the jury. If participants win more than one category, they will perform in the Grand Prix only once. The participants will sing two preferred songs in 10 minutes. The copyright for the songs is participants’ responsibility. The participants who cannot fulfill the requirements above will be considered out of the competition. The winner in this round will achieve a certificate, a trophy, and development funds IDR 30,000,000,-. All participants are required to attend the Award Ceremony to hear the results of the #PICF2017 competition. Certificates, medals, and trophies will be given at the appointed schedule. The committee will not send certificates and/or prizes which are not taken at the appropriate time.

SPECIAL AWARD The committee will give a special reward (certificate and development fund IDR 2,000,000,-) to a conductor or choir group who shows an outstanding quality during performance.
PARTICIPATION CONDITIONS: 1. Please read carefully the conditions related to each category: the number of the singers, age limit, duration of the performance, the number of songs, type of sound, type of song, etc. 2. #PICF2017 is open to all choir groups from Indonesia and worldwide. 3. For choirs who take part in more than one category, the song program in each category must be different. 4. Choirs who represent a school, church, or who take part in a category with an age limit MUST send a statement letter which is signed by the school’s principal or another authorized official. The letter must include the date of birth and the age of each member. The choir will be disqualified if the committee finds any difference between the details in the statement letter and the performance on stage, and no refund will be given. 5. The number of the choir members cannot exceed the participation package which has been paid. The committee has the authority to disqualify any choir group if there is different number of participants, and no refund will be given. 6. Please re-read this policy thoroughly and carefully. 7. The tolerance of the age limit which is allowed is one year over the age limit which has been determined.

schedule stage rehearsal and performance
The schedule and venue of each group will be informed in August 2017. The schedule for stage rehearsal is only 10 minutes for each category.

The schedule will be prioritized for participants who have sent the arrival details early. There will be no replacement of the performance and rehearsal schedule from the ones that have been decided.
performance Performance time is the duration starting from the very note until the very last note. It includes the interlude time first between songs. If the performance exceeds the determined time, the total score will be subtracted by 1 penalty point multiplied by the total minutes exceeded multiplied by the total scores.

1. The committee will only provide an acoustic / electric piano. (Please inform the committee for the use of the instrument)

2. A maximum of 3 instruments without ‘definite pitch’ can be used, except for the no limit category

1. The committee has the authority to change the category if the song program is not in accordance with the chosen category. 2. The program that will be performed on stage must be an original work for choir not a reduction from orchestra. 3. The participants must send 5 (five) sets of song programs of the song that will be performed. 4 (four) sets will be returned to the participants after the awarding ceremony, and 1 (one) will be kept by the committee for the archive. The committee will not send the score after closing day. 4. All songs MUST be approved by the Artistic Committee. The ones that are not approved MUST be replaced. To avoid problems during the preparation, it is advised to fill in the artistic data and send the song(s) in advance. 5. The COPYRIGHT of the song is the responsibility of the participants. The committee is not responsible for any song’s copyright that will be performed or the
use of the song with photo copy. The participants must come along with the written license to use the song(s) from the composer. It is advised that the participants buy the original score or send the receipts for a minimum of 5 sets of scores to the committee for the songs that have been published by the publisher. 6. For choir who uses instruments, the score for the instruments is COMPULSORY to be included in the choir score. 1. - 5 sets of score with the license from the Composer/ Arranger of the song that will be performed (the license is mandatory to be sent) or - 5 sets of the score copy of the song from a free website with the evidence.

The registration for #PICF2017 will be closed by Monday, 10 April 2017. *The committee will close the registration even before the time limit if the performance slot is full.
