5 Tips on How to Install a Motion Sensor

Presented by B&G Property Maintenance

If you live in the greater Seattle area, preventing intruders from coming into your home or business is of paramount concern. That’s why more home and business owners are installing inexpensive motion sensors connected to lights so that potential intruders are turned away before entering the property. Your Seattle electrician can install motion sensors and the wiring needed quickly and inexpensively depending on the number of sensors you want installed. However, before you call the electrical services Seattle residents and business owners trust, there are a few tips you will need to follow before the installation process begins.

Location You will need to scout the locations that need motion sensors to help protect your property. Ideally, outside sensors should be placed in areas that are vulnerable to break-ins, but not normally lighted. In addition, you’ll want sensors in areas that contain vehicles or other valuables that are kept outside. For this work, you may need to call a security expert such as someone who works for a motion sensor company to help you scout out the grounds during the day and especially at night to see where the sensors are needed.

Numbers Can one sensor cover a larger area or will you need two, that is one question that needs to be answered after scouting your property. You may find that one is more than enough which can save you money on installation costs.

Height The sensors will need to be low enough to detect movement, but high enough to be out of easy reach. The worst-case scenario is a motion sensor that can be blocked from a blind side during the day so that intruders can come in at night without setting the sensor off. So, the exact location will need to meet the right standards.

Power Will the sensors be tied into the main power or be independently powered? This will depend on several factors, but an independently powered sensor means that they can operate even if the main power is down and they do not pull from your electricity, although the amount is usually small. You will want to discuss this point with someone knowledgeable about motion sensors to get the best-informed opinion about what to do.

Line of Sight Although it may seem counterintuitive at first, you want the motion sensors to be seen in the daylight. This is because the sight of motion sensors creates doubt in the mind of potential intruders that want to break in to your home or business. The fewer obstacles that are present, the more likely it is that your property will have intruders. So, try to have at least some of the motion sensors easily seen which will dissuade many potential break-ins from occurring.

Once everything is set, your Seattle electrician can properly install the motion sensors so that your home or business is better protected. Just be sure that you do a little research first before calling electrical services Seattle home and business owners trust for all their electrical needs.
