THE GREAT TAMER

NEXT WAVE 2019

A Season of All New BAM Artists For almost 40 years, Next Wave has been the definitive place to see innovative performing arts from around the world. Season after season, BAM has introduced audiences to superstars and emerging artists who continually blur boundaries and forge new paths. As BAM’s new artistic director, I want to celebrate the original inspiration of Next Wave. So we’ve put together a season of all new Next Wave artists— every single one of them is making their BAM debut. These shows are exhilarating, powerful, surprising, provocative, and sometimes challenging. They make me think about the world in a different way. And it’s my hope that you will too. If you’ve been to Next Wave before, I’m thrilled to introduce you to these visionaries. And if you’re joining us for the first time, then I’m excited to build our next chapter with you. See you in the fall, David

Swan Lake / Loch na hEala TEAC DAMSA WRITTEN, DIRECTED, AND CHOREOGRAPHED BY MICHAEL KEEGAN-DOLAN BAM DEBUT PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH IRISH ARTS CENTER One of Ireland’s most imaginative theater makers deconstructs the beloved classic for our modern age. . Michael Keegan-Dolan and his company Teaċ Dam sa transport audiences to a magical realist otherworld of light and dark, ecstasy and catharsis, pain and reconciliation. Following a rapturous reception in Dublin and around the world, this Swan Lake takes root where ancient Irish mythology and modern Ireland collide, featuring gorgeous production and costume design and a contemporary score combining Nordic and Irish folk music. “stunning endurance theatre.” —THE GUARDIAN (AUSTRALIA)

The Second Woman PERFORMING LINES CREATED BY NAT RANDALL AND ANNA BRECKON BAM DEBUT One woman. 100 men. 24 hours. In this epic feat of endurance theater, actor Emily Davis performs the same scene—inspired by Cassavetes’ meta-theatrical 1977 film Opening Night—100 times, with 100 different men drawn from the community, each with disarmingly different results. The Second Woman is a raw examination of men and women and the gendered conventions of emotions. Stay for 24 minutes or the full 24 hours, drop in once or return to see more—the choice is yours. Note: This show includes coarse language and adult themes. OCT 18 AT 5PM—OCT 19 AT 5PM 24HRS ALL TICKETS $25 Note: A limited number of timed-entry tickets will be sold in advance for entry at 5pm on Friday, October 18. Street style meets athletic hip-hop in Brazilian choreographer Bruno Beltrão’s intoxicating, heartstopping, gravity-defying experiment. DEAD CENTRE WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY BEN KIDD AND BUSH MOUKARZEL

Irish theater company Dead Centre grapples with the shadows that surround a spotlight. This stunning play puts a boy on center stage—an unassuming embodiment of tragedy, mortality, legacy, and longing—whose destiny is not to be.

Gradually, you bear digital witness via smartphone and the live performance to a stranger’s profound, moving experience. User Not Found invites you to be a voyeur. The End of Eddy UNTITLED PROJECTS / UNICORN THEATRE, UK BASED ON THE BOOK EN FINIR AVEC EDDY BELLEGUEULE BY ÉDOUARD LOUIS ADAPTED BY PAMELA CARTER DIRECTED BY STEWART LAING BAM DEBUT

“For some young people this will be not just a play but a revelation.”

Édouard Louis was born into poverty in working-class France. He was bullied relentlessly for being gay. And he was utterly desperate to escape. Written when he was just 21, Louis’ internationally acclaimed autobiographical novel The End of Eddy captures his deeply resonant coming-of-age story. Now, in this compelling and charismatic staging, we bear witness to his affecting reflections on youth, sexuality, class, power, and freedom. This is a story for anyone who has ever felt like they didn’t fit in. Part of a series of events celebrating Édouard Louis in collaboration with St. Ann’s Warehouse, which will present History of Violence during its 40th anniversary season. Note: This show contains sexually explicit references and strong language. NOV 14—16, 19—21 AT 7:30PM NOV 17 AT 5PM BAM FISHER (FISHMAN SPACE)

“surrealist nightmares are rarely this much fun.” —EVENING STANDARD (UK)

The Great Tamer CONCEIVED AND DIRECTED BY DIMITRIS PAPAIOANNOU BAM DEBUT Dimitris Papaioannou is the artistic heavyweight you’ve never heard of. The idiosyncratic Greek directorchoreographer got his start as a painter, led the creation of the opening ceremonies for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and recently became the first artist invited to create a new work for Tanztheater Wuppertal since Pina Bausch’s death. The Great Tamer is a ravishing mess of disembodied limbs on a shape-shifting floor. A cheeky commentary on our existence, set to the strains of Strauss’ Blue Danube waltz. As macabre as it is enchanting. Note: This show contains nudity and may not be appropriate for children. On a remote mountaintop, this ragtag group of inhabitants are increasingly lonely and occasionally slaphappy. Belgian dance-theater collective Peeping Tom sets the scene for this hilariously unpredictable, relentlessly clever Olivier Award-winning work. Talks COMING OUT AND COMING OF AGE In conjunction with The End of Eddy Presented at the Brooklyn Book Festival Sun, Sep 22 / Brooklyn Borough Hall (209 Joralemon St, Brooklyn) Free / brooklynbookfestival.org for details

A conversation about coming out and coming-of-age stories, engaging with a range of writers who pay specific attention to the intersections of class and geography, in conjunction with this season’s stage adaptation of Édouard Louis’ autobiographically inspired novel.

ÉDOUARD LOUIS

Co-presented by BAM and St. Ann’s Warehouse In conjunction with The End of Eddy and History of Violence Mon, Nov 11 at 7pm 1hr 30min / BAM Fisher (Fishman Space) $20; $10 for BAM members Édouard Louis comes to BAM to discuss the internationally bestselling books at the heart of this fall’s two adaptations: The End of Eddy, presented this season as part of Next Wave 2019, and History of Violence, presented at St. Ann’s Warehouse. This discussion looks to the ways in which Louis’ observations of classism, homophobia, and racism in French society—also addressed in his highly acclaimed nonfiction book, Who Killed My Father—makes the invisible visible and confronts readers and viewers with searing truths. For more information about these and other performance-related discussions, visit BAM.org/talks.

Artist Lab Co-presented by BAM and Mark Morris Dance Group Led by artists performing on BAM’s stages, these two- to three-hour workshops and creative conversations are uniquely crafted to offer greater insight into an artist’s process and deepen your experience of a related production. This season we feature a range of participatory experiences. User Not Found creators Dante or Die share their approach to site-based theater-making, choreographer Kyle Marshall (A.D. & Colored) leads a class in his unique movement practice, and theater provocateur Kate McIntosh (In Many Hands) offers a seminar around scientific thinking and the imagination of the arts, among other opportunities. Artist Lab programs are open to artists with and without disabilities. Modifications and additional support are available on site as needed and we invite you to share any ways in which we can best support your experience during the registration process. Visit BAM.org/ArtistLab for programming details and registration information.
