WELCOME!

2020 is a critical year. So much is at stake. Everywhere we look, people are being silenced and disempowered. And so at BAM this spring, we’re stepping out, standing up, and inviting a diverse group of artists to share their stories. Many are making their BAM debut. They are local and global and their work is urgent and immediate. These artists ask: What do you do when your homeland turns on you? What do you do when you have no home? What is our place on a warming planet? How do we use technology to reshape the world for the better? How do we reframe the story? And how can art and activism unite at a historic moment? This spring, come to BAM for a season of work that challenges us with new ideas from new perspectives. Collectively they inspire and remind us all that the world is yours, the world is theirs, the world is ours. See you at BAM, David

WHAT DANCE CAN BE

CANDOCO

“WHEN I CAME TO CANDOCO IT WAS CLEAR TO ME THAT I WAS COMING TO WORK WITH A COMMUNITY” —YASMEEN GODDER, CHOREOGRAPHER OF FACE IN

From the Bird’s Nest in Beijing to the London Paralympics closing ceremony to outdoor spaces that catch stray passers-by, Candoco has spent 28 years sharing its work all over the world. The

company has commissioned such preeminent choreographers as Siobhan Davies, Emanuel Gat, and Hofesh Shechter, building an expansive body of work to match its expansive vision.

SET AND RESET/RESET

FACE IN

The first professional company in the UK dedicated to the integration of disabled and non-disabled dancers, Candoco is driven by worldclass artists committed to challenging what dance can be. They take on “the most beloved and irresistible work of postmodern dance” (The New York Times), Trisha Brown’s Set and Reset, originally commissioned by BAM for its first Next Wave in 1983. In collaboration with Trisha Brown Dance Company, Candoco restages Brown’s original guidelines and choreographic phrases to include disabled dancers for the first time. Israeli choreographer Yasmeen Godder worked closely with the company to create Face In, an uninhibited piece that’s sensual, disturbing, and ridiculous by turns—but always deeply personal.

WHO ARE THE TRUE NOMADS OF THE 21ST CENTURY?

Magdi wishes for a better life for her young daughter. Fatima is taking hormone injections as part of her transition. Adam, more than anything, just wants to dance. The Roma people are striving. Throughout Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and beyond, they are stagnant, with a cultural identity that transcends their absence of a country they can call home.

CONSTANZA MACRAS & DORKYPARK

Opening Night Party Apr 23

Choreographer Constanza Macras folds these individuals and their unique stories into a big dance-theater spectacle, featuring 17 Roma performers and five members of Macras’ freewheeling, Berlin-based company DorkyPark sharing the stage. Dispelling the prevailing stereotypes—itinerant free spirits, gypsy fortune tellers, beggars—Open for Everything riffs playfully on Romani dance and music traditions with a live onstage band. The result is a messy, exuberant celebration of humanity.

REGGIE WILSON

Choreographer Reggie Wilson has traveled far and wide: to the Mississippi Delta, to research secular and religious ways of life; to Trinidad and Tobago, to understand the Spiritual Baptists and the Shangoists; to Southern, Central, West, and East Africa, to work with performance groups and diverse religious communities. Throughout his career, he’s sought out the varied histories and spiritual practices of Africa and its diaspora to guide his own personal movement style, which he calls “post-African/Neo-HooDoo modern dance.”

“REGGIE WILSON EMBODIES THE GHANAIAN AKAN SYMBOL OF SANKOFA, A BIRD THAT LOOKS BACKWARD, REVISITING THE PAST, TO SEEK THE EGG THAT WILL HATCH ITS FUTURE.” —DANCE MAGAZINE

POWER is the revelatory result of Wilson’s research of the Shakers in the Berkshire Mountains. In residencies at Jacob’s Pillow and Hancock Shaker Village, he found inspiration where he least expected it. Noting early in his study the Shakers’ extraordinary focus on dance and music, Wilson learned of their long history of welcoming free and enslaved African-Americans

“DIZZYING, SPIRITUAL, SCIENCE-FACT BEAUTY AND BRACING BEATS” —THE GUARDIAN (UK) From Berlin basement clubs to Stanford’s PhD program to an international tour with Radiohead, Holly Herndon’s electronic music, technology, and philosophy have led her on a boundary-breaking musical journey. In her latest album, PROTO, Herndon fronts and conducts an electronic pop choir composed of both human and AI voices. “WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO HIJACK REALITY AND MAKE OF IT WHAT WE PLEASE.” —HOLLY HERNDON While plenty of artists are interested in utilizing technology, few have gone to the lengths of creating an AI baby. Spawn, as Holly Herndon calls her, is her latest musical collaborator. Her attempts to mirror live singers—producing a mix of swelling harmonies and faltering phrases—

highlight the uneasy, ever-closer proximity between human and machine. As Spawn’s voice is interwoven with Herndon’s raw vocals, and complex electronic compositions meld with spiritual hymns, Herndon probes the depths of what it means to be human right now.

As a musician, he came up in the London music scene as a rap battle champion, going on to write and perform both as a solo artist and with Swet Shop Boys. His provocative solo release, “Post 9/11 Blues,” was banned before a viral groundswell forced it into radio. The Swet Shop Boys’ album Cashmere toured to sold-out crowds from Coachella to NYC’s Webster Hall. In a nod to their cultural impact, protestors against Trump’s “muslim ban” at Los Angeles International Airport protest were heard chanting their lyrics. ART ENSEMBLE

OF CHICAGO GREAT BLACK MUSIC—ANCIENT TO THE FUTURE

Two musical forces unite. Although he avoids the term minimalism, Steve Reich is credited with helping to invent it, and his remarkable career includes the Pulitzer Prize, two Grammy Awards, and the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. The Art Ensemble of Chicago was born out of the uncompromising and ambitious vision of members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Making good on its motto, “Great Black Music— Ancient to the Future,” the group’s experimental works and extended improvisations redefined ideas of what jazz could be—and its place within the musical landscape. Bang on a Can’s Long Play festival offers a rare chance to experience these musical forces side by side, at the center of a celebration of new music that has been shaped by their influences.

LONG PLAY Bang on a Can began as a way to bring together the most innovative voices in music. The beloved tradition continues this year with Long Play, taking over spaces across Brooklyn. At BAM, the Art Ensemble of Chicago celebrates 50 years at the cutting edge of experimental music with a tribute to its original members. Bang on a Can presents rare, all-live performances of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint, featuring 14 electric guitarists from the Brooklyn-based ensemble Dither, and the propulsive 2x5, scored for two rock bands and performed by the Bang on a Can All-Stars and friends.

Musically aggressive. Aggressively political. In her art and in her actions, Tanya Tagaq never pulls punches. Split Tooth is an extraordinary union of Tagaq’s improvised musical performances and best-selling debut novel, created in collaboration with director Kaneza Schaal and visual artist Christopher Myers. Featuring the world’s first-ever Inuit throat singing choir featuring all-Inuit performers, this theatrical adaptation comes to life through Tagaq’s incisive voice and words. Art and action unite in a radical vision of Arctic Futurism—a conversation with the myths that have made us and the myths we have yet to write.

“GUTTURAL AND POWERFUL” —BROOKLYNVEGAN

Tanya Tagaq grew up in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, above the Arctic Circle, but she first discovered Inuit throat singing in college, listening to tapes her mother sent to ward off homesickness. The musical tradition, Kattajjak—which Tagaq draws on, and transforms, in her wildly original improvisations and avant-garde compositions—was a game played between Inuit women, banned by Christian missionaries for decades as part

“DECOLONIZATION ISN’T ABOUT GOING BACK TO THE WAY THINGS WERE—IT’S ABOUT STITCHING TOGETHER THE KNOWLEDGE THAT WE STILL HAVE FROM THE PAST AND APPLYING IT TO TODAY.” —TANYA TAGAQ

of widespread efforts to erase indigenous cultures. A member of the Order of Canada, a Polaris Music Prize and JUNO Award winner, and recipient of multiple honorary doctorates, Tagaq is an original disruptor at the forefront of seismic social, political, and environmental change. Her radical work is not solely about sound, but about overturning deep-rooted assumptions and violations of indigenous culture.

Growing up in small-town Pennsylvania, she taught tap dance to children and eventually found herself taking lessons in composition from a percussionist with the Philly Pops. Three operas later and a Grammy under her belt, Mazzoli recently made history when she became one of the first of two women composers to be commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera.

BREAKING THE WAVES This season, BAM presents Mazzoli’s “dark and daring” (The New York Times) reimagining of Lars von Trier’s Breaking the Waves, the tale of Bess McNeill, a woman besieged by tragedy and the contradictions of the disparate figures in her life. Set in the remote Scottish Highlands, Mazzoli’s textured original score is a nuanced, intensely personal, and ultimately feminist take on Bess’ moral plight. FOY SMITH —THE TIMES (UK)

Mar 25—Apr 19 (see BAM.org for details)

MATT

Claire Foy and Matt Smith reunite in this hilarious and bracing look at love in the time of climate change, which sold out its critically acclaimed run at London’s Old Vic. Playwright Duncan Macmillan (People, Places & Things) carefully crafts the highs and lows of modern relationships into an emotional rollercoaster of humor and tenderness, sorrow and rage, featuring “minimalist to the extreme” (The Guardian) set and costume design by Rob Howell (The Ferryman, Matilda). As they contemplate bringing a child into a world torn apart by environmental and political disasters, Foy and Smith bring their enthralling chemistry to the stage in a deeply compelling and resonant tale about responsibility, idealism, and love.

“A PICTURE OF FLAWED LOVE, SET IN A FLAWED PLANET.”

ONE HUNDRED BROOKLYNITES TAKE THE STAGE.

Together, they reflect the makeup of the city, each selected because they mirror the demographics of 1% of the borough. 100% Brooklyn is the latest production in Rimini Protokoll’s internationally acclaimed series, made with citizens from Tokyo to São Paulo. Part experimental theater and part interactive event, the participants come together to share stories and give their opinions on a range of issues—from whimsical preferences to painful truths—painting a living picture of the city in all its complexities, contradictions, and unabashed attitude. It is Brooklyn, after all.

BROOKLYN

A LIVING SNAPSHOT OF THE CITY

WHERE YOU’RE FROM. WHERE YOU LIVE. YOUR INCOME, AGE, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. There are countless ways our identities get broken down into statistics. In 100% Brooklyn, experimental theater company Rimini Protokoll uses those numbers to build a community.

“ONE OF THOSE WERE-YOU-THERE? AND WHY-DIDN’T-I-KNOW-ABOUT-THIS? EVENTS THAT A MERE DESCRIPTION CANNOT DO JUSTICE TO.”

WHEN RICHARD GADD OFFERS A WOMAN A CUP OF TEA, HE DOESN’T EXPECT HER TO COME BACK THE NEXT DAY. AND THE NEXT DAY. AND THE NEXT… In an electrifying, darkly comic show, the Edinburgh Comedy Award winner reveals the true story of his relationship with his stalker. Gadd paints a brutally honest portrait of two people—trapped by toxic ideas of gender, sexuality, power, and abuse—driven well past their breaking points. Filled with unexpected twists and shocking revelations, Baby Reindeer comes to BAM for Gadd’s US debut, following critically acclaimed runs in Edinburgh and London under original Fleabag producer Francesca Moody and Olivier Award-winning director Jon Brittain. “THE ARTY-QUEER EVENT OF THE SEASON.” —OUT.COM

“THERE ARE ALL DIFFERENT KINDS OF ARTISTS, WHO ARE ALL DIFFERENT KINDS OF COLORS, AND ALL DIFFERENT KINDS OF QUEER, AND ONCE A YEAR WE SHOULD COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THAT.” —VIVA VIDALIA, PERFORMER

Step into a shimmering world of pulsing beats and unbridled celebration, from basement to rooftop. Burlesque and piano bar, DJ sets and art installations, there’s no wrong way to revel. This all-inclusive, all-gender celebration of queer nightlife delights in putting on a show, breaking down barriers, and building community. Let’s do it with art. Let’s do it with dancing. Let’s do it until 2am.

“IT’S AN HONOR TO BRING THE RAUCOUS, UNAPOLOGETIC FLAMBOYANCE OF THE QUEER UNDERGROUND INTO THE HALLOWED HALLS OF BAM.” —ZOE ZIEGFELD, PERFORMER AND CURATOR

Inspired by the boundary-busting Pride festivities of San Francisco, Everybooty has earned its space as Brooklyn’s place to party in a city bursting with Pride. Now curated by a group of passionate members of BAM staff, the event has gotten more imaginative and home-grown over time. Last year drew on the local talent of worldclass performers including trendsetter Andre J. (curated and co-produced by 651 ARTS); the Brooklyn drag collective Switch n’ Play; drag queens Flower Tortilla, Lady Quesa’Dilla, Viva Vidalia, and Theydy Bedbug; and the legendary House of LaBeija.
