Massey Imports 4303 Blue River Ct. Gahanna, OH 43230 Attn: Scott Thompson
SAMPLES:
One (1) bicycle frame labeled “Bamboocycles” was received from the client. The client reported that the sample is a bicycle frame suitable for ASTM F2043-09 Standard Classification for Bicycle Usage Condition 2. The frame, manufactured from bamboo tubes and metallic joints, was identified as a men’s style frame, with maximum indicated seat post extension of 95 mm and a front axle to fork crown dimension of 395 mm.
Figure 1. Bamboocycles men’s frame following test. TESTING:
The sample was tested in accordance with ASTM F2711-08, Standard Test Methods for Bicycle Frames. The Bamboocycle sample was tested for Horizontal Loading Durability
Fatigue, Vertical Loading Durability Fatigue, and Impact Strength, in that order. The client requested testing be performed using a Condition 2 classification. The testing was performed in accordance with the test requirements embodied within the Draft ASTM Standard Specification for Condition 2 Bicycle Frames as follows:

April 4, 2012 Page 2 of 2 Test Report: 1203-00390 Horizontal Loading Durability Fatigue Test: “The frame shall be tested and each must complete a minimum 50,000 cycles with a cyclic load of 800N tensile and 600N compressive”. The frame was tested in horizontal fatigue configuration with a test fork of 395 mm in length. A cycle rate of 1 Hz was used. The testing was performed using force control. Vertical Loading Durability Fatigue Test: “The frame shall be tested and each must complete a minimum 50,000 cycles with a cyclic load of 1200N to 120N load in the compressive direction”. The frame was tested in vertical fatigue configuration with a test fork of 395 mm in length. A cycle rate of 1 Hz was used. The testing was performed using force control. The frame was tested with manufacturer specified maximum seatpost extension of 95 mm. Impact Strength Test: “The frame shall be tested with a drop height of 180 mm, and the permanent set of the frame and fork shall be less than 40 mm.” ASTM F2711 specifies the impact mass to be 22.5 Kg. The starting wheelbase of the frame was 989 mm. RESULTS:
Horizontal Loading Durability Fatigue Test: The frame completed a minimum 50,000 cycles with a cyclic load of 800N tensile and 600N compressive without evidence of fracture, resulting in a “pass” for this draft product specification requirement. Vertical Loading Durability Fatigue Test: The frame completed a minimum 50,000 cycles with a cyclic load of 1200N to 120N load in the compressive direction without evidence of fracture, resulting in a “pass” for this draft product specification requirement. Impact Strength Test: The frame was impacted with a 22.5 Kg mass from a drop height of 180mm. The frame and fork after impact measured 987 mm. The permanent set of the frame and fork was 2 mm, resulting in a “pass” for this draft product specification requirement.
