Welcome to Baltimore School for the Arts

We are one of the top five public performing arts high schools in the country, and we combine a rigorous college prep program with pre-professional training in the arts. We offer programs in dance, film, music, stage design and production, acting, and the visual arts.

Our students spend three hours a day in art classes, taught by working professionals, and four periods a day in academics. Sure, they’re becoming excellent artists, but they’re also building skills such as collaboration, time management, discipline, and grit. The result? Our high school graduation rate is often close to 100 percent, and our six-year college graduation rate is 81 percent, well above the national average.

Our alumni can be seen on Broadway and television, in films, in major galleries, and dance companies. Others can be found analyzing stocks on Wall Street, working in well-respected hospitals and law-firms, and running their own start-ups.

About the BSA Foundation

The Baltimore School for the Arts Foundation plays a vital role in empowering our students to excel as artists and scholars. Annually, the Foundation contributes approximately 40 percent of the school’s operating budget through its endowment, annual fund, and Expressions fundraising initiatives. Your generosity in supporting the Foundation helps turn dreams into reality. Thank you for making a difference!

I am thrilled to welcome you to Expressions ’24 The Cornerstone! This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the historic Mark K. Joseph Building, which has been the heart and home of Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA) since its founding.

Each and every day, these hallways are filled with the excitement and energy of our 427 high school students. As artists and scholars, they are challenged to bring their best in the classroom, on the stage, and behind the scenes. Expressions will give you a peek behind the curtain as we showcase our students in all six arts disciplines—Dance, Film and Visual Storytelling, Music, Stage Design & Production, Theatre, and Visual Arts.

A BSA education is unique. Our curriculum includes college preparatory, honors, and Advanced Placement courses, which supports each student’s academic growth and promise. The arts curriculum is tailored to meet the interests of our students and provides them with invaluable training and skills to prepare them for the highly-competitive creative workforce. Our students leave BSA as problem solvers, collaborators, and leaders.

BSA is the cornerstone of our students’ artistic and intellectual journey. We know that what we do at BSA changes lives, and we are honored to have you as our partner.

With love and appreciation,

BALTIMORE SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS

JAMIR LAWSON ’24 MUSIC/SAXOPHONE

One of my most cherished memories at BSA centers around the 30 minutes preceding our performance of the Mozart Requiem—a significant event for the music department, performed once every four years. Earlier that day, nerves were high as we struggled through a full run-through on stage. However, everything changed in those 30 minutes before our stage call. Under Dr. Hardy’s guidance, we ran through the seventh movement, Agnus Dei, and something magical happened. Our hard work seamlessly melded together, nerves disappeared, and as we stepped onto the stage, we performed flawlessly, united in our passion for the music.

BSA has been instrumental in shaping my future. It’s here that I’ve found a balance between pursuing my musical aspirations and nurturing my artistic vision. I’ve seized opportunities to advocate for change, serving as student commissioner for the Baltimore City Public School Board and student body president at the Baltimore School for the Arts. Additionally, I hold executive board positions for both the Maryland Association for Student Councils and the Association of Student Congresses for Baltimore City.

Though being a senior at BSA brought its challenges, it’s through these experiences that I’ve grown and evolved, preparing me for the journey ahead.

WHERE THE ARTS CHANGE KIDS’ LIVES

VALENTINA

FLORES-BRIGGS ’25 DANCE

As a multicultural Guatemalan immigrant, my identity deeply influences my art. When I moved to this country, I yearned for better training and a space to grow not only as a dancer but as an artist navigating life. Fortunately, I found that space at BSA. Being surrounded by others who share my artistic perspective made me feel seen and connected. Collaborating with classmates and other departments to create performances is truly magical and fuels my creativity. I was privileged to be one of the co-creators for I was one of the original creators of the Hispanic Heritage Month showcase here at BSA.

Before BSA, I aspired to share my love of dance with others but underestimated the depth of my artistry. BSA has revealed the intricacies of my craft, the language I speak through movement, and the courage it demands. Performing a piece I co-choreographed at the Peabody Dance Festival was a profound honor. While the artist’s journey is challenging, being surrounded by fellow artists at BSA makes it a bit easier.

CREATE A STOP-MOTION ANIMATION (3RD FLOOR)

Cadavre Exquis or Exquisite Corpse is a creative technique developed by the surrealists based on an old parlor game in which people pass around a drawing and add to it without knowing what has already been drawn. Under the guidance of our Guest Artist Kat Navarro, guests will follow the same principle to create an entire stop-motion animation using the Exquisite Corpse technique.

KARAOKE KORNER (3RD FLOOR)

Whether you are a shower serenader, a carpool crooner, a radical rocker, a train riding troubadour, or a certified operatic enchantress, come belt out your favorite songs with our faculty and students at Expressions Karaoke!
