We are one of the top five public performing arts high schools in the country, and we combine a rigorous college prep program with pre-professional training in the arts. We offer programs in dance, film, music, stage design and production, acting, and the visual arts.
Our students spend four hours a day in art classes, taught by working professionals, and four hours a day in academics. Sure, they’re becoming excellent artists, but they’re also building skills such as collaboration, time management, discipline, and grit. The result? Our high school graduation rate is close to 100 percent, and our six-year college graduation rate is 81 percent, well above the national average.
Our alumni can be seen on Broadway and television, in films, in major galleries, and in dance companies. Others can be found analyzing stocks on Wall Street, working in well-respected hospitals and law-firms, and running their own start-ups.
Thank you for joining us for this spectacular evening celebrating the creative young people of Baltimore City!
My own journey has taken me from sitting and playing in classrooms and studios at Baltimore School for the Arts to riding the bus and train with my mom to Manhattan for auditions. As a sophomore, I landed a role on The Good Wife, where I worked with our own Josh Charles ‘89. Since then I have been fortunate to have worked on some wonderful projects, including Love, Victor opposite legendary fellow alumna Tracie Thoms ‘93. I have vivid memories of being a googly-eyed 16-year old listening to her speak to my ensemble about her journey; nothing’s really changed ten years later.
As a BSA alumna and on behalf of an extraordinary community of artists and artisans, learners and leaders, innovators and creative changemakers, I thank YOU! Thank you for believing in us. We are grateful for your ongoing support in making all of it possible and couldn’t have done it without you!
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and the Expressions Committee and its leadership for making this annual fundraiser possible.
We thank you for your tremendous support of Baltimore’s young artists. Your generosity will bolster BSA’s art education programs, which serve over 5,000 Baltimore children a year.
With much appreciation and gratitude,
Rachel Hilson ‘13 Honorary ChairWe are excited to share the passion and talent of our students and staff with you, our community of supporters, advocates, family, and friends.
We were inspired by the theme Infinite Journeys because of the endless possibilities the arts provide each of us to grow, develop, and learn. Tonight we celebrate the art of becoming.
Our students take several paths to get to our doors at Madison & Cathedral. Some walk or get dropped off by parents. Some carpool with neighbors or friends. Some take a bus or a train. Some dreamed of coming to BSA for years. Some have been coming since their third grade TWIGS classes. Some stumbled upon the application online as eighth graders. Yet regardless of how they got here, their background, artistic discipline, or geographic location, all of our students have one thing in common: they come full of promise and dream of a future in the arts. We take those dreams seriously and do our very best to provide opportunities for growth, independence, and professionalism.
An education at BSA is quite unlike any school I know. So tonight we welcome you to take a peek at the magic that is Baltimore School for the Arts. Thank you for traveling through space and time with us. You may not know it now, but you are an important part of our future. Let’s see the infinite possibilities this evening has in store for us all!
