As an alumna, board member, and chair of this year’s event, I would like to thank all of the committee members, volunteers, staff and students who have worked tirelessly to bring this event to life. These people continue to amaze and encourage us with their dedication and passion for the work of the Baltimore School for the Arts.

On behalf of all the students, faculty & staff, alumni, parents, and the Board of Directors, we would like to thank you for your attendance and generous support of the 42nd Annual Expressions! All of the funds raised will go directly to support Baltimore’s young artists. The return on your investment is extraordinary—it provides diverse pathways to academic & personal achievement for our young artist scholars, stronger creative landscape for our city, and lays the groundwork for the long term flourishing of a community!

Welcome to Baltimore School for the Arts’ 2022 Expressions Gala!

“Survival is insufficient” his intriguing Star Trek quote has been on my mind quite a lot in the past few weeks. Survival is a good thing, don’t get me wrong.

I have just decided that enduring is not enough. We must do more.

We must do more than just survive.

As difficult as things have been living with the pandemic, we here at Baltimore School for the Arts have found a way to do more than survive. We dig deep. We carry on. We make conscious and intentional efforts everyday to move beyond what feels like just enough. We move on to re-establish ourselves as artists, scholars, and activists for social change. We did not let the pandemic stop us. We did not let weekly covid testing stop us. We did not let contact tracing stop us. We did not let high rates of infection in late December and early January stop us. We dug our heels in the sand and said not only will we survive, but we will thrive. We have found ways to host public performances again.

We have found ways to reimagine The Nutcracker. We have found ways to play our instruments, and mount our plays and have gallery openings and conduct film screenings. We are working to return to our expected level of artistic excellence in spite of all the perceived setbacks and challenges of this year. We are not just surviving, we are thriving, and one day soon we will be flourishing.

It has not been easy. Empathy and understanding are values near and dear to us. We lead with empathy and a recognition of the social and emotional needs of our community. We of course had to slow down. Things take more time now.

We need more time to process and take care of ourselves. We care about our well-being. The courage, passion and resiliency of our staff and students motivate and inspire me everyday. I am humbly proud every time I walk through the doors of 712 N. Cathedral Street. I feel grateful to be a member of this unique artistic learning community.

This years’ Expressions’, entitled Masquerade: The Stories Behind the Masks, is our way of sharing a window into our soul. We want to share our fears, passion, worries and frustrations. We want you to know how hard we’ve worked and how far we’ve come. We take this time to celebrate our students, faculty, parents, board members, and entire community. We thank you for all you do to support our young artists here in Baltimore.

We would like to thank those who have supported this performance event, especially the tireless efforts of the Expressions Committee and its leadership, and all of our sponsors and donors.

We hope that you will enjoy this communal celebration of BSA’s excellence, resilience, as well as the joy that fuels us all.

Welcome to Baltimore School for the Arts We are one of the top five public performing arts high schools in the country, and we combine a rigorous college prep program with pre-professional training in the arts. We offer programs in dance, film, music, stage design and production, theatre, and the visual arts.

Our students spend four hours a day in art classes, taught by working professionals, and four hours a day in academics. Sure, they’re becoming excellent artists. But they’re also building skills such as collaboration, time management, discipline, and grit. The result? Our high school graduation rate is close to 100 percent, and our six-year college graduation rate is 81 percent, well above the national average.

Our alumni can be seen on Broadway and television, in films, in major galleries, and in dance companies. Others can be found analyzing stocks on Wall Street, working in in well-respected hospitals, and running their own start-ups.

JASON NEWTON Parent, Board Member

Jason Newton joined WBAL-TV 11 News in 2013 as co-anchor of WBAL-TV 11 News Today. He is also host of the public affairs show “11 TV Hill”.

Jason is an award-winning reporter whose news travels have taken him around the country covering stories of national interest.

Prior to WBAL, Jason was an anchor and reporter at sister-station WISN-TV, the ABC affiliate in Milwaukee, and WBOC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Salisbury.

In 2017, Jason won an Emmy Award for his coverage of Maryland’s opioid crisis as part of WBAL’s “State of Addiction” coverage. In 2006, he earned an Associated Press award for “Outstanding In-Depth Reporting,” covering the efforts of Maryland firefighters to help clean up and restore order to Slidell, Louisiana, one of the hardest hit communities by Hurricane Katrina.

Jason served on the teaching staff in the broadcast department at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. While there, Jason played in integral role in launching Discover UMES, a university webcast highlighting achievements on campus.

Jason has a degree in broadcast journalism from the Philip Merrill School of Journalism at the University of Maryland-College Park.

DARIUS BARNES Darius studied at the Baltimore School for the Arts and the School of American Ballet (SAB) and began his career as a member of the New York City Ballet. He has danced with the Suzanne Farrell Ballet & The Dance Theatre of Harlem. Darius is on the teaching staff and adjudication panel for MOVE(NYC) and is a member of SAB’s Alumni Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion.

EZE JACKSON ‘98 As founder, creator and chief visionary of the burgeoning entertainment and media company EPIC FAM (Every Person Is Coming From A Memory), a collective of local talent, Eze is committed to supporting the Baltimore artistic community with a creative support system. As Baltimore Magazine put it, “It’s hard to envision the Baltimore music scene without Eze Jackson.”

RUFUS ROUNDTREE (TWIGS Alum) Rufus was in the first class of TWIGS in the 80s and graduated from City College. He fronts his own band, Da Bmore Brass Factory, blending the sounds of Baltimore with the music of New Orleans.

He has performed with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, as well as, Rebirth Brass Band, Dru Hill, & the Soul Rebels. He collaborated with BSA alum Eze Jackson ‘98 on the 2017 release “Hey Baltimore”.

Producers PAT GALLUZZO, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Pat Galluzzo is the Director of Creative Technology at Baltimore School for the Arts, where he manages the Center for Collaborative Arts and Technology; leads the advanced/emerging media projects and classes; and works with other institutional leaders to develop and implement new curriculum to fit the constantly evolving landscape of arts education and demand for creativity. A major component of his role is to generate, incubate, guide, and foster the collaborative and technological growth and vision at BSA. Since joining BSA, he has lead and been an integral part of many projects and initiatives, such as CCAT TWIGS, Imagined Worlds, BSA MixLab, Morphē and Adobe Creative Cloud access for all BSA Students and Faculty. Galluzzo was also instrumental in the founding of the Charles C. Baum Film and Visual Storytelling department.

Before coming to BSA in the summer of 2014, Galluzzo earned an MFA in Photographic and Electronic Media from MICA and had previously received a BA in Economics and Studio Art from the University of Vermont and worked in economic research, analysis, and modeling.

JULIANNE FRANZ, PRODUCTION MANAGER

Theater veteran, Julianne Franz joined the Stage Design and Production faculty of the Baltimore School for the Arts in 2019 and serves as BSA’s Production Manager. As a teaching artist and producer, she has enjoyed employment with The Stoop Storytelling Series, Baltimore Center Stage, Liz Lerman and Dance Exchange, MICA, Carver Center, Baltimore Performance Kitchen, Baltimore Theatre Project, Creative Alliance, Loyola University, Celebrate Brooklyn, Peter Sellars Productions, UMBC, Glimmerglass Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, MASS MoCA, John Hopkins, Catholic University, and Washington College. Julianne is a proud alumnus of Open Society Institute’s Fellowship Program, Towson University, and University of Baltimore County.

THOMAS VENTIMIGLIA, SCREENPLAY BY

Tom Ventimiglia teaches screenwriting in the Charles C. Baum Film and Visual Storytelling department and English in the Academic department. His fiction has appeared in magazines such as The Baltimore Review and The Potomac Review. In 2014, he codirected The Founders, a documentary about the making of the BSA. Currently, he is producing Turf Valley, a comedic web series about stay-at-home dads. He is a Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund Fellow at Johns Hopkins and a graduate of New York University.

Tom has been at the Baltimore School for the Arts since 2006.

BRIGID ZUKNICK ‘05, PRODUCER

Brigid Zuknick is the Chief Advancement Officer for the BSA Foundation. She provides strategic leadership for BSA’s fundraising efforts and all development initiatives. Her experience in arts management, grant-making, alumni engagement and philanthropic development guide her work in seeking out creative opportunities for relationship building for the school. In partnership with the development team and leadership, Brigid works to support the vision by providing financial support for the institution. As a graduate of the dance department she is passionate about BSA, its mission and most importantly, its students.

Beatriz Bufrahi is the Saul Zaentz Chair of the Film Department of the Baltimore School for the Arts, where she has taught digital media and video since earning her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 2004. In 2014, she co-directed and edited The Founders, a documentary about the establishment of the Baltimore School for the Arts. Bufrahi is the founder and director of the ‘Baltimore High School Film Festival’, which has presented an annual juried screening of narrative, documentary, experimental films and animation from Baltimore and Maryland youth since 2012. In 2019, Bufrahi collaborated with the Media Studies Department at Johns Hopkins University to create the national ‘Saul Zaentz High School Film Festival,’ of which she is co- director.

Bufrahi is a producer for the comedic web series Turf Valley.

as soloist and recitalist, and has been a member of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, and the Spartanburg Philharmonic. She appeared with the Ritz Chamber Players in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and has performed with such festivals as the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, the Gateways Music Festival, the Contemporary Music Theatre Festival, the Spoleto Festival, and the Amelia Island Festival. Her performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio and on WNYC in New York City. She has served on the faculty at the Petrie School of Music of Converse College and as Music Department Chair and Violin Instructor at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. She has been an adjudicator at numerous pre-college and college level music competitions, a clinician at conferences sponsored by the South Carolina Music Teachers Association, and a panelist on forums on the arts.

Currently Dr. Edwards is also an associate member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (Columbus, Ohio), a member of Ensemble Argos, performs as a sub with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and serves on the faculty at the Peabody Preparatory and the Baltimore School for the Arts.

DR. MELLASENAH EDWARDS ‘85 MUSIC

Mellasenah Indira Edwards received undergraduate and graduate degrees in performance from the Eastman School of Music, the Yale School of Music, and the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. Her teachers have included Isidor Saslav, Peter Salaff, Syoko Aki, Sylvia Rosenberg, and Shirley Givens. She served as a teaching assistant in the string department while studying at Yale and as teaching assistant to Shirley Givens at the Peabody Conservatory. Dr. Edwards has appeared nationally

LAURA HALM HAMILTON ‘99 DANCE

A Baltimore School for the Arts alumna, Laura Halm Hamilton received her B.F.A. in dance from The Juilliard School in 2002. She had the pleasure of performing with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and as a soloist with the Ballett des Saarländischen Staatstheaters in Saarbrücken, Germany. Over the course of her performance career, she has danced masterworks by contemporary choreographers Jiřr̆í Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, and Johan Inger, among many others. Highlights of her career include performing the title role of “Anastasia” in Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Anastasia, “The Black Swan’’ in Marguerite Donlon’s SchwanenseeAufgetaucht, and “The Red Woman’’ in Inger’s Walking Mad. In 2014, Stijn Celis created the role of “Solveig” for Halm Hamilton in his interpretation of Peer Gynt. As a member of University of Washington’s Chamber Dance Company in 2016, she performed Lucinda Childs’ groundbreaking post-modern solo Carnation.

Before joining BSA in 2018, Halm Hamilton was the choreography assistant and rehearsal director for Dance Company Nanine Linning/ Theater Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany.

ARCHIE VEALE ‘85 VISUAL ARTS

Archie Veale became the Visual Art’s Department Head in 2016. Veale has worked with Baltimore’s youth as a teacher, mentor, and adviser everywhere from the Bright Starts (Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Art and Culture) to ACTSO to Portfolio Preparation Courses at MICA. He has been recognized several times, twice nationally, for his teaching and received

both individual and collaborative arts grants. For more than 20 years, Veale has served as the drawing instructor at the Baltimore School for the Arts, also teaching TWIGS. A Baltimore native, Veale is a graduate of BSA (‘85) and the Maryland Institute College of Art (‘91). He is also a working illustrator and graphic artist, whose clients have included Johns Hopkins, Laureate, Scholastic, and the MLB Negro League Hall of Fame. He has created murals for several local arts organizations around Baltimore, and served as a program adviser for community arts groups on the east and west coasts.

BECKY MOSSING ‘88 TWIGS Becky Mossing has

performed all over America and overseas. Credits include Beauty and the Beast (nat’l tour); Cinderella Waltz (Ubu Rep –Off B’way); Working with Showdown Theatre Arts, in Guildford, United Kingdom; and both productions of Hairspray in Concert with John Waters and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Becky has narrated weekday and family series concerts for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra including Carnival of the Animals, The Remarkable Farkle McBride, and Wizards and Wands. Becky’s directing credits include The Polar Express with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Working, Our House, Hairspray, and Rent with Showdown Theatre Arts, U.K. Mossing’s cabaret performances can be seen frequently in the Baltimore area. Mossing has been BSA’s musical theatre instructor for more than a decade and directs the Hippodrome Foundation’s summer theatre camp intensives. She is a graduate of the Baltimore School for the Arts and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she received the Outstanding Achievement Award in Musical Theatre. She received her master’s in teaching degree from Goucher College and has dual certification in K-8 general and special education.
