es, this is definitely our boldest edition yet. It’s full of colour, crammed with inspiration and, following the tagline we now include on every breathtaking cover, it’s ‘The quintessence of bridal vogue’. We didn’t just think out of the box for this issue, we went to such extremes that our Publisher, Eric Bornman, as well as Creative Director, Steven Macbeth, and Photographer, Tim Hulme, were all on the edge of their seats. The only person who was completely at ease was Flower Editor Otto de Jager, who challenges the status quo on a daily basis. The result? The best, boldest, most colourful edition of Nubian Bride yet. From the extraordinary flowers and unique take on décor, which Otto de Jager provides, to make-up from Urban Decay that jumps off the page and wedding gowns that offer a bride the opportunity to make her wedding her own when it comes to colour and design, this issue reinvents everything you ever thought about weddings. We hope you’re as delighted with the final product as we are. We wanted to give you something more, something bold and

TRENDS

Trending When it comes to the latest bridal trends our fingers are always on the pulse

Cold as ice Dessert stations are very trendy this season; they bring an exciting and fun element to a wedding. We recommend the handcrafted liquid nitrogen ice cream, Nitropod, served from a truck. Your guests can enjoy their favourite cocktails turned into frozen yoghurts and desserts right in front of their eyes; this one will knock them off their feet. nitropod.net

Say it with cake The latest in wedding cake trends is all about expressing your love story. Whether your cake features one of your favourite romantic quotes or chronicles your entire relationship, these cakes are more than just towers of yummy butter cream.

Non-floral centrepieces Food trucks Here’s a trend that will make your wedding stand out from the rest. Instead of serving food in a conventional way using plates, hire a food truck and serve your guests some gourmet street food. This can include the likes of Dijon chicken, leg of lamb, gourmet pulled pork sandwiches or paella. www.tutto.co.za

20

Gone are the days when flowers were the only centrepieces. Opt for a slightly different, non-floral centrepiece like a sparkly tree branch. Ask your wedding planner to look for a variety of centrepieces for you to choose from as this will allow you to move away from using flowers. Hanging candle branches are a favourite among décor coordinators at the moment; they add a romantic touch to the wedding. www.rocknrollbride.com

Live cartoon portraits Having some form of entertainment at your wedding ensures that your special day is memorable. A caricaturist will sketch a customised cartoon portrait for each guest. It can take around 10 minutes per person. Your guests will be amazed at the caricaturist’s ability to capture their true likeness and they can take their portrait home with them. www.gcportfolio.co.za

WEDDING ETIQUETTE

Guest list 101

I

sn’t it amazing how many people you know once you start contemplating getting them all together for a single occasion? You may have thought that your circle of family and friends was small until you sat down and made a guest list. Then, just when you take a deep breath and say, “Okay, we can plan a celebration with 100 guests,” the parents’ lists arrive and suddenly your reasonably sized wedding swells . Not every couple wants to have an enormous wedding – nor can they afford it. You may have pictured yourself being married in an intimate little chapel followed by a luncheon at your favourite restaurant. Now that idea may have worked with a guest list of 50, but the reality is more likely 150. So the key question is: Should I give up my idea of the perfect wedding to accommodate more guests, or should I cut down the guest list to accommodate MY dream wedding? The other major concern when a guest list swells to mammoth proportions is the budget. Big weddings call for mammoth budgets and your choice would be to either trim the list or make concessions and have a big wedding on a restricted budget. The first step is to set your priorities. Do you really want all of those people there? If they are dear friends and close family members, it may be worth having a less lavish wedding. In this case, consider a venue that supplies the food, staff and tableware as part of the overall package. Hire a DJ instead of a band. Perhaps you can host your wedding out of season to negotiate better supplier rates. Often the guest list includes many people who you (or more likely your parents) feel obligated to ask. If having those people as guests won’t add anything to the wedding’s special atmosphere, then trim them off the list. One way would be to have a destination wedding. A lot of the people

24

who you feel obligated to invite would not manage a trip abroad. Also, people generally understand that destination weddings are smaller. Another way to keep numbers down is to set strict guidelines. Depending on the size of your family, you may draw the line at inviting siblings and first cousins, and nobody more distantly related. Avoid inviting someone just because of the family connection. If you have not seen the person for the past five years, there’s no reason to invite them. As for friends, if you don’t know the name of their dog, don’t invite them! Just be fair about how you stick to the limits; you can’t tell the groom’s family to cut down their list, but insist on keeping

who have been in a relationship for a long time. But it is fine to invite other guests to come alone; besides, a wedding is a great place to meet people. Having two lists is fine if you can manage them effectively. The A list is for everyone who must be invited and the B list is for those you’d like to invite but are not sure if you’ll have the capacity. Once you have a clearer idea of your A list attendance, you can select priority guests from the B list. The only problem with this method is that you have to constantly review RSVPs and also send invitations a bit earlier to accommodate all the juggling.

Often the guest list includes many people who you feel obligated to ask. If having them as guests won’t add anything to the wedding, trim them off the list your third cousin twice removed on yours. Should you find yourself in a tricky situation at work where you feel you have to invite everyone, rather keep things simple and exclude them all. It is also quite acceptable to exclude children from weddings. However, if the parents are travelling from out of town, they will probably have to bring the kids along, so have a list of babysitters available. On the invitation, say something like, “Due to limitations, we are unable to have the pleasure of children’s company at our wedding”. A third approach is to work out how many people you can realistically afford to host and then divide the list into thirds: one third for the bride and groom, another third for his parents and the last third for hers. Another good way to limit the list is to avoid the ‘bring a partner’ scenario. It is expected that you invite married people as a couple as well as unmarried couples who are living together or

Pretty in pink The trend is for lots of colour, whether bold or subtle, or perhaps a mix of everybody’s favourite for 2016 – metallic. By Word of Mouth was inspired by this colour kaleidoscope to create five exquisite looks. The result? A wedding theme that is completely unique and all yours

DĂŠcor Natural woven placemats are used as a base and also add an interesting texture to the opaque pink glass under plates. Here they are teamed with pink and cream micro striped napkins and silver cutlery. Pink water glasses offer a complementary pop of colour to the selection of glasses, which include clear crystal red wine glasses and beautiful ones for brandy (a special request). Finish off the look with antique silver candlestick holders filled with tall white dinner candles.

Stationery Touches of pretty pink include round pink menus with three-dimensional cut out detail and curled wine hanging nametags.

Flowers The highlight: a large round crystal stand bowl filled with a selection of hot pink lisianthus, blue roses, pink stems and beautiful pink peonies. This is accompanied by an assortment of mix-and-match silver holders filled with mini arrangements.

The cake Melt-in-the-mouth tower of pink French macaroons served on a tall perspex plinth.

W

ith his sense of style and passion for precision, German-born Philipp Dreyer has created an innovative business, offering madeto-measure suits and shirts, which are customised to create the ultimate personal statement for a groom on his wedding day. Philipp, who has been in South Africa for the past six years, originally lived in Cape Town with his Namibian wife, where he studied business at university. He had previously worked in the clothing industry, running his family’s wholesale firm in Germany selling womenswear. Today,

he runs his successful made-to-measure menswear business in Johannesburg. When he was looking for a decent suit to wear for graduation, Philipp noticed there was a gap in the market for customised made-to-measure suits. “I had a choice; either buy a very expensive branded suit or a cheap alternative. So I looked around to find where I could find a bespoke suit. That proved to be quite a difficult task. Obviously I wasn’t willing to have a hand-tailored suit made. “Traditional, hand-crafted suits from famous Savile Row in London set one back more than £4,000, or in local terms, more

than R90,000.” “Tailoring is a craft,” Philipp adds. “The numbers of tailors worldwide who are able to finish a hand-made suit (60 hours work) is a small one. We are not tailors. We are bespoke, made-to-measure specialists and prefer to employ a high-end production line with modern machinery that allows us to bring out exact and consistent finishes, especially when it comes to pressing. This means we can bring a customised product that is far superior to an off-the-rack solution at prices between R10,500 and R14,000.” The suit-making process involves using a choice of existing patterns for jackets, pants and waistcoats, which are then customised and personalised with a ‘toolbox’ of specific items – collars, cuffs, buttons, etc. “We also offer a choice of more than 80 different linings and 200 different fabrics,” Philipp explains. “It’s very important to find a really good fit, which we do by taking more than 15 measurements per client.” Another vital aspect of creating a bespoke suit is the use of natural materials, preferably wool with a good weight for the sewing process. Philipp’s reputation has come not only from his choice of offerings, but also his meticulous attention to detail to create the perfect tailored fit. “Little tweaks make all the difference,” he says, demonstrating how he measures a shirt sleeve, the length of a jacket and explains the importance of finding out whether the groom will be wearing a watch on the day as this will impact on the width of the shirt sleeve. The groom is then able to choose the fabric combination of his choice. He can also have the exact combination of garments custom-made for him, including the shirt, jacket, pants and a waistcoat. Another advantage of this type of process, Philipp explains, is having a customised pattern that can be used time and again. It’s a repeatable madeto-measure system. For the groom, it’s advisable to find a suit that lasts him a very long time. “We try not to make something that is kept in the wardrobe for a decade. Waistcoats especially can uplift any regular suit to a once-off wedding outfit.” www.alexandersuits.com www.nubianbride.co.za |

India Mothusi

This inspirational wedding where the couple eloped is just one of the stunning selection in this issue. More about India and Mothusi’s Big Day is featured on the next page

REAL WEDDINGS Where and how did you meet? We met when Mothusi was playing a gig at the Johannesburg Theatre with the band called The Fridge. I was there with a friend, and afterwards we all went out together. Although we were both there with other partners, there was a clear connection between us. Mothusi got my number from a friend and asked me out the following day. How did he propose? We were at a music festival, Grietfest, and Mothusi asked me to marry him. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I didn’t think he was being serious at first, but soon realised that he was. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. We were married in Cape Town at a beach-side ceremony next to Llandando rock. The wedding was intimate and personal. We cried. We laughed. We started off by exchanging vows next to the sea, then we visited several scenic areas in the city. We ended the day with a Thai dinner (our first trip together was to Thailand) and then spent the night out on Long Street. We stayed at a lovely boutique hotel in Bantry Bay. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Nothing. What was the highlight of your day? Standing next to the sea and pledging our love to each other. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It felt surreal. It also felt very right and like it was supposed to happen. Where did you go on honeymoon? Cape Town. We had eloped there, and we then honeymooned there. What advice would you give to a soon-to-be bride? Take a moment to just enjoy the day. Don’t worry about minor details. Enjoy this big moment; it’s the beginning of your life together. Dudu Orapeleng

Where and how did you meet? We met at a friend’s wedding in Kimberley in December, 2009. We’d both travelled down from Gauteng for the weekend. We exchanged details and then started going out together. How did he propose? I’m obviously a very deep sleeper, because I woke up one morning to find a ring on my finger and a little note from him telling me how he wanted me to be part of his life forever. I guess he measured the ring while I was sleeping as well, as it fit perfectly! Please provide a short description of your wedding day. On the days leading up to the wedding I was calm, but on the Big Day I was very nervous and concerned about whether everything was going to be perfect and amazing. It had been raining for days, so I was worried that the weather would spoil the wedding. But on the day, the sun came out, I had breakfast with my mom and bridesmaids, my nerves calmed and the excitement took over. I was amazed at how quickly the day went by; I wanted to make time stop. This wasn’t our first wedding, however; we had been married traditionally twice before. But it was a completely new feeling, being blessed by the priest. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? I don’t think I would change anything. It took us about a year to plan the wedding, and overall everything went picture-perfectly. What was the highlight of your day? My highlight was finally being declared husband and wife, and our first dance. Also, when Orapeleng made a speech and cried. He’s not www.nubianbride.co.za |

an emotional person, so that really touched me. His highlight was when I walked down the aisle. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It felt amazing. It was the start of our very long and happy marriage, the final step to becoming husband and wife, something we had been waiting and praying for, for such a long time. Where did you go on honeymoon? We spent two glorious weeks in Mauritius. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Involve the groom in the whole process. Orapeleng had such great ideas and I think if he hadn’t been involved, he would have felt left out. We grew very close throughout the whole process, working together as a team. Where and how did you meet? We met in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania through a mutual friend. How did he propose? In July 2015 we climbed Mt Kilimanjaro. After a tiresome six-day hike, when we reached Uhuru Peak at 3,850m above sea level (that’s apparently the highest point in Africa!), he proposed in front of family and friends who were with us. I couldn’t believe it; I thought I was imagining things! But he was right there on bended knee, with me looking terrible – no make-up and droopy eyes. It was the most beautiful perfect-imperfect moment. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. It was magical, small and very intimate with close friends and family. Since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of a smaller wedding, so it was my dream wedding – and much more. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? I would add on videography to capture all the live memories as they happened. That would have been the cherry on top of the cake. What was the highlight of your day? My husband’s vows blew my mind. I was not expecting him to be so emotional and to utter such sweet words. He still doesn’t believe me that I loved it. I also loved the wedding toasts; almost everyone had something nice to say, and that was special. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? Like I had just won the lottery! I felt complete; he is my world. Where did you go on honeymoon? Well, www.nubianbride.co.za |

since we had a destination wedding all the way from Tanzania to Stellenbosch, it was both wedding and honeymoon for us. Where and how did you meet? We met in 2004 when we worked for the same company. We were introduced by a mutual friend. We were friends for about five years before we dated. He actually asked me out for a good two years before I accepted! How did he propose? We spoke about getting married a few months after dating and around a year later Zami sent a letter to my family asking for my hand in marriage. Then, when he was in Germany two weeks later, he sent members of his family to mine to discuss lobola. On the day of the lobola, he came back with a ring. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. IMPECCABLE! The weather was on our side. There was no stress at all, everything was on point! If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? Honestly, there is nothing we would change. Our loved ones were there, I had my kids and my best friend by my side and he was looking hot… I was on cloud 10. The day went by so fast. Our wedding planner, Ayanda Mavundla, was out of this world. What was the highlight of your day? My highlight was the CANDY BAR. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It felt right, it felt awesome, I felt complete. I’ve never been so happy. Where did you go on honeymoon? We are going to attend Beyoncé: The Formation World Tour in Switzerland. www.nubianbride.co.za |

Where and how did you meet? We met at UCT while reading for our engineering degrees. We were introduced by mutual friends in 2003. How did he propose? Ivan surprised me one day after work with his hidden cameraman (his best friend). Red rose petals were strewn over the floor leading to the main bedroom, and he was dressed in a black suit. He was down on one knee with a ring in his hand. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. It was an elegant, simple and beautiful affair that we shared with the people who we hold dear in our lives. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? I wish I could have been able to pause for a little bit longer to observe the guests and the lovely fanfare that was around me. What was the highlight of your day? The highlight was the opening of the dance floor – the music/DJ was amazing! How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It felt complete; a special knowing delight shared between the two of us. Where did you go on honeymoon? We postponed our honeymoon; we plan to visit the Caribbean in a few months’ time.

I declined. After the audit, we went back to the office and Sello asked me out for lunch. This time I said yes. The lunch was good – we talked, we laughed and an hour felt like five minutes. After that short lunch, which we now consider our first date, Sello asked me out on an ‘official’ date on Friday, 29 July 2011. I was so excited. He even bought new pants for the date… and that was the start of this beautiful journey! How did he propose? Sello’s family personally delivered a letter to my family, requesting my hand in marriage. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. I woke up around 3am as I was so excited and anxious, I couldn’t sleep. During final preparations I was calm – thank heavens I had my family and bridesmaids to keep me sane. Then the ceremony started and the day went by so quickly. Our entrance dance/step at the reception was on point, thanks to the bridesmaids and groomsmen, and, of course, my cousin, Mpho, who was choreographer. After a lot of toe stepping, we managed to enjoy and execute our first dance in style. The food was amazing and the after party was insanely good. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? We should have prepared our MC better (he wasn’t used to being an MC and his nerves got the better of him). Everything else was perfect, thanks to our wedding planner, Nthombi. What was the highlight of your wedding day? Walking down the aisle was a big highlight. In www.nubianbride.co.za |

fact, the whole ceremony was special, including saying our vows, the church ceremony and, most importantly, seeing Sello at the altar (he was the only person who mattered at that point). It was also breathtaking seeing the reception décor for the first time during our photo shoot just before the reception while the guests were enjoying our wedding cake. Another highlight was our first dance as well as when our daughter Ona joined us on stage – what a magical moment. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? I can’t describe the feeling in words; it felt like I was standing next to the person who completes me. Where did you go on honeymoon? Cape Town. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Hire a wedding planner, as peace of mind cannot be bought. Do not procrastinate; ask for help when needed (remember, you can’t be everywhere at once). Make sure that you are ‘present’ on the day of your wedding! And enjoy your wedding day. Where and how did you meet? We both worked at a mine in Witbank. Nothing happened until I was transferred to the Vaal. After I’d been there for about five months, he requested to follow me on Facebook and we started chatting. We exchanged numbers and were soon talking daily. That was in 2013. How did he propose? He proposed to me officially on 2 January 2015. We’d been together for about two years, and he had already met with my parents about lobola. I noticed he was a little strange on New Year’s Eve; he later told me he got cold feet. This particular morning, he kept on blinking, which I knew meant that he wanted to discuss something serious with me. Eventually, he took out the ring and told me he wanted to marry me. I was so excited and overwhelmed that I literally needed to take a nap after calling family and friends with the news. Please provide a short description of your wedding day. The time leading up to the matrimonial ceremony went by very quickly. I was both nervous and excited. Once we said our vows, I was able to relax. The vows were so beautiful that I cried. The whole day was beautiful, filled with love, family and friends. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? The only thing I would change is the day of the wedding. I wish we had arranged it for a Friday or Saturday, but it was on a Sunday, which meant that many of the guests left early. What was the highlight of your day? The highlights that stand out for me include when my Dad walked me down the aisle, when I walked into the reception and saw the décor and our first dance. www.nubianbride.co.za |

How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? It was an incredible feeling. After that, knowing I was finally married, nothing else mattered. Where did you go on honeymoon? We went to Cape Town for an incredible week. What advice would you give to a brideto-be? Don’t try and do everything yourself. Delegate to friends and family. I wanted to control every single detail, which was exhausting, and in hindsight, I’m sorry that I didn’t involve others in the planning too. TRADITIONAL REAL WEDDINGS

Where and how did you meet? We met at a restaurant in Sunninghill; I was attending a friend’s birthday party and Pius was out with the boys. We started chatting about work, family and life… and the rest was history. How did he propose? He proposed to me on his birthday over a candlelit dinner. Please provide a short description of your traditional wedding day? It was a mix of colours and pride, encompassing people of different cultures. There was plenty to eat and drink, the décor was exquisite and the entertainment included a live Nigerian band, a DJ and traditional Zulu dancers. We had so many elements, but everything worked beautifully. If you could change one thing about your wedding day, what would it be? I would change my husband’s health; he fell sick on the week leading up to our wedding and that was stressful for everyone, family and friends. What was the highlight of your day? Watching the Zulu dancers perform, the Nigerian ‘chop money’ ceremony and when Mbali’s family sang. And, of course, declaring our love for each other in front of the priest. How did it feel to finally stand next to each other as husband and wife? Awesome. Where did you go on honeymoon? We did not plan a honeymoon as I was seven months pregnant at the time and did not want to risk travelling. What advice would you give to a bride-tobe? Enjoy and be present in every moment, www.nubianbride.co.za |

FLOWERS

Flower Editor Otto de Jager offers a selection of imaginative and unique floral combinations that emphasise brightness, boldness and gorgeous colour

B

erry Blush

This is a fusion of red on red with a hint of berry purple. Berries, seeds and roses combined with scratched waxed containers create an explosion of autumn reds. The look is busy, but toned down by using the same pallete of reds. For ease of reference lets call this, ‘red on red’. Think ice cream, think Campari, think raspberry or pomegranate.

FLOWERS

Karoo Landscape

Pepper seeds, succulents indigenous leaves and twigs all combine to create a lushness. This demonstrates the abundance of simplicity, or in other words, scarcity meets abundance. Think harvest table, think Graaf-Reinet, think beautiful cognac brandy and dessert wine. Imagine lamb chops, all things Karoo.

Regal

Opposite: A majestic approach to flower arranging. Oxblood and gold is a perfect combination for any king or queen. This formal approach illustrates richness, abundance and opulence; it’s for the discerning eye that enjoys the classic. Think Versailles, think Buckingham Palace, think of titles such as HRH (Her Royal Highness), or Sir or Lady or Prince or Princess. In other words, ‘fit for a queen’.

The Abundance of Autumn

Mystical charm to ward off evil spirits (oranges spiked with cloves) combined with the simplicity of rock roses and other fruit. Think bold shapes. Think graphic lines and passionate colours combined with delicate porcelain in the same colouring and then add to this a layer of the unexpected. So it’s lotus flower seed, dried oranges and so on. Ode to a little bird

Think whimsy, fantasy and an intermix, a touch of mythology, fun and irony, a hint of magic. This is decadence portrayed in a fun ,innocent yet sophisticated manner for someone who really wants charm, tonguein-cheek humor but sophistication and elegance at the same time.

DÉCOR

MarchĂŠ de Puss This is the juxtapositioning of an abstract mind, pretending that the flowers on the coconut hair chair are indeed a fabric covering the coconut hair. It is abstract, it is bizarre, it is unreal, but it allows for a smile and the wonderment of the creative mind. This is for the discerning collector who knows the coconut hair chair should never be covered with fabric. It is about combining the rawest of beauties (the chair) with the most delicate of beauties (fresh fragrant hyacinth).

GOWN TRENDS

The

Debate World-renowned bridal coach Randy Fenoli is an expert in helping brides find their dream gown. He chats to Nubian Bride about finding the perfect wedding dress

GOWN TRENDS

F

amous for being the star of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, Big Bliss, Randy Knows Best and Randy to the Rescue, bridal coach and wedding expert Randy Fenoli has assisted hundreds of brides around the world in choosing the dream dress for their wedding. On Randy to the Rescue, Fenoli travels around the USA with a truck full of wedding gowns and accessories, and assists brides in choosing the dress of their dreams from his ultimate popup bridal salon. He is coming to South Africa in May to attend the Bridal Fair and assist local brides. We asked him a few questions about weddings in general as well as wedding gowns.

What are the 2016 trends? What’s in: Choosing a gown that reflects your look, style and personality. What’s out: Gowns that are cookie cutter. Today, every bride wants to look unique. The best advice I can give a bride is to keep it personal. Choose elements that are meaningful to you. I think a wedding is always better when it is different and individual to the couple. What are the latest colour trends? I personally feel that a pale colour or a pastel wedding dress can look quite beautiful on a bride with the right skin and hair colouring. I have designed colourful wedding gowns since 1993, when I first started out, so I don’t think they are such a new trend, although they have recently started receiving more attention. However, I am more of a traditionalist and prefer a pastel colour, or a shade of white or ivory over a bold wedding gown, unless there’s a religious or cultural reason for a bride to wear a bold colour.

A wedding is always better when it is unique and individual What is the most popular style for a gown? Every dress is cut differently and every person is shaped differently. I would not want to generalise and say that a certain style or silhouette looks flattering on everyone. It’s true that more people can wear an A-line silhouette and that a mermaid gown is more difficult to pull off; however, there is more to be considered than simply the silhouette. You also need to consider the neckline, waistline and details. For example, a gown in chiffon or charmeuse will look completely different to the same design made in taffeta or satin. Also, you never know how a certain dress or silhouette will look on you until you’ve tried it on.

Which international designers do you consider the best and why? I like different designers for different brides. It seems that for every bride, there is a dress and designer that is a perfect match! I really don’t have one favourite designer. I prefer those who are true to their own unique style and truly ‘create’ gowns as opposed to those who simply copy what other designers have already created. Tips on how to choose a wedding dress? In my book It’s All About the Dress, I offer the following advice. Establish: 1. The story: What type of couple are you? What would you like your wedding to represent? 2. The plan: The venue, time of year, etc. should all be decided before choosing a gown. This can help determine the level of formality of the gown, also the fabric, colour and design. 3. The budget: How much do you want to spend on the gown? Take the entire wedding into account. You can be flexible within the budget, but not with the budget. If you find the perfect gown and it’s a little over budget, decide where you can trim from other areas of the wedding so you can get the gown of your dreams. 4. The look: Ask yourself what type of bride you want to be – classic, flirty, fun, sophisticated, retro or a combination? As a couple, are you nature lovers or perhaps artists? Do you have a special connection to a location? Once you have a theme for the wedding, finding a gown will be much easier. What advice do you have for creating an entire ‘look’ for the bride? Keep it personal. Choose elements that are meaningful to you. A wedding is always better when it is unique and individual to the bride. Choose your make-up,

hair and accessories carefully. They will either elevate or depreciate your look. They should coordinate with your gown and not compete with it. When choosing accessories, consider proportion; keep everything – earrings, necklace, veil, the bouquet – in scale. This will ensure that the look is cohesive and that nothing takes attention away from your beauty. How should a bride-to-be choose a make-up artist and hairdresser? 1. Set a budget. 2. Prepare for your appointments by gathering pictures of hair and make-up styles that inspire you. 3. Narrow down your look and have a trial run. 4. Keep an open mind. 5. Always make choices that make you FEEL the MOST beautiful. What is better on the Big Day? A ballerina pump or a high-heeled shoe? I probably wouldn’t recommend wearing a shoe without a heel. I think a slight heel gives a sexy movement when the bride walks. When a bride feels beautiful and comfortable, her whole body language changes. She will carry herself with confidence and will radiate beauty from within. Remember, it is not only about the shoe, but how you wear the shoe. Please tell us about some of the experiences you have had in shooting Say Yes to the Dress. I believe that all women are beautiful, and it is my job to find the perfect dress to enhance her beauty. In the show, I get the opportunity to share one of the most important moments in a woman’s life and become a part of the family for that moment. The most rewarding moment is when I am able to help a woman who may never have considered herself ‘pretty’ to look into the mirror and realise that she is beautiful. www.nubianbride.co.za |

GOOD ADVICE

Take Note

Professional rugby player Courtnall Skosan married his beautiful bride Semone in December 2015. Julia Rice asked him to give some advice to newlyweds about marriage and their new life together

W

hat is your number one piece of advice for newlyweds? Never stop loving each other and enjoying the time you spend together. Honour your marriage and make sure that, after God, your partner is the number one priority in your life, more than any friend or family member. You are now one. Live like one. What is the secret to a good marriage? God at the centre. There is no other way I know. The closer you draw to God, the closer both of you will grow. Also, don’t get old and grumpy and take each other for granted. That kills a lot of marriages. Don’t ever stop making the effort to be the best version of yourself for your partner. Do the little things consistently and every now and again surprise him/her. How do you keep the romance alive? By never getting into a comfort zone and thinking that because you are now married you don’t have to

do the things your partner once loved – whether it’s washing the dishes to make her kiss you the way she did on your wedding day, or washing his clothes to make him hug you the way he did when you were dating. It’s usually the small things that make the big difference. Romance shouldn’t be a duty. It should be fun and enjoyable. How do you combat post-wedding blues? We believe that if you have the right foundation and support structure, this is easy. Marriage is for life. Most people don’t understand this. They think that whenever things get too tough, they can opt out. It’s a covenant, not a contract. There is no expiry date. With this in mind, being happy and growing old together and leaving a legacy behind should be the ultimate goal. Whatever comes in the way of that needs to be dealt with. This is the one thing in your life you should fight the hardest for. “Where there is unity, God commands a blessing.”
