From the editor By the time you read this, I really hope that winter is on its way out the door and we’re all starting to defrost a little. You’re probably wondering why you just saw my face on the cover. Well, this issue is a really special one; for our 44th issue the Joburg Style team decided to take a look at how a special group of women in the city are harnessing their personal brands to kick off careers, start their own businesses and build legacies. The #thecurrencyof ’you’ article looks beyond the concept of being an ‘influencer’ and looks at what it really takes to build a personal brand that goes deeper than the shining lights of Instagram. It’s a real honour to share the space with Kamogelo Mafokwane and Mi’chal Naidoo and to even be considered to be part of the feature by the

THE ESSNCE ANDILE CHATS TO PRODUCER, SOUND ENGINEER AND MUSICIAN THE ESSNCE ABOUT HIS MUSIC, THE MAN BEHIND THE NAME AND BEING AN ARTIST IN JOHANNESBURG
How did you get started in the music business? My curiosity got me to the point of wanting to know more about how music is made. I taught myself how to make beats, and eventually I met up with some people who enjoyed making music too and we formed a group. As time went by, my passion for music had to be

We have so much culture and, truthfully, our music could cater for a continent if we truly embraced it. This is not a jab, just a thought that was provoked by our differences. What’s the hardest thing about being a young artist in South Africa? There are so many challenges in this industry, especially when you’re young.

You produce for The Colour Of Truth Podcast, tell us more about that? The Color of Truth is about getting young intellectuals together in one room, sharing truths about our
I can’t name them all, but for starters, it just seems as though being a young artist in hip hop has a stigma of being destructive or being a bad influence on society. It’s also hard to stay true to yourself in every instance; I’ve seen how easily artists get taken by the wind and end up in a box creatively. How would you describe the music you make and what inspires you? It’s heartfelt music! You’re getting to learn the corners of my soul through my music. A connection with the listener is what I am trying to accomplish through my songs, and what

inspires me is real feelings; guard down, just truth, nothing more, nothing less. What do you love about visiting a city like Johannesburg? I’m not from JHB, but all the times I’m there I experience a culture shock of sorts. There are two sides to it, the opulent lifestyle that feels like it’s straight out of a movie and the rougher bits that humble you. Your single ‘Selfhelp’ is available on iTunes. What does it feel like to create a song for South Africa and the world to listen to? It almost feels like a
realities, but with focus on specific topics in our society. Anything else you would like to share? Spread love and peace, take care of your mind and then leave the rest behind.

Mark has worked in the education space for 23 years. He qualified as a Science teacher and initially worked at a rural northern Natal school, after which he relocated to Johannesburg in 1998. He has always taught in a high school environment and is comfortable engaging with teenagers. Of sentimental value to Mark is a noticeboard littered with letters from his past pupils expressing their gratitude and the impact he had on them while under his tutelage. Reading these letters always reminds him of his purpose.

He led the Science department at Wendywood High School before moving to Beaulieu College in 2004. In 2005, he obtained a Bachelor of Science Honour’s degree and went on to complete a Master’s degree in Science in 2008 at the University of the Witwatersrand. Mark has held various leadership roles at the College, the most recent being the Deputy Head of Academics. After finishing the Leadership Development Programme at the Wits Business School, he decided to seek new challenges and broaden his experience in the field of education, hence his new role as Group Head of Academics, aimed at further strengthening the educational offering of the Kyalami Schools Group. Mark has a 12-year-old daughter, Hannah, who is at Beaulieu Preparatory in grade 7. She is very excited to start at Beaulieu College next year! Mark is extremely passionate about education and seeks to bring agility and innovation to the Kyalami Schools Group. His educational philosophy centers on the premise that children are innately curious, therefore it remains our collective responsibility to foster that spirit of creativity and curiosity, guided by a robust and dynamic curriculum. With a strong background in science, Mark favours an inquirybased learning approach and views the classroom as a ‘messy’ multicultural space where learning is lightly scripted but intentional, and where the teacher assumes the role of a skilled facilitator. The current educational landscape is in a state of flux and the dated schooling model is no longer effective and sustainable. Mark’s view is as follows: “It is said that millennials will make up 50% of our workforce by 2030. Millennials readily learn across platforms and geographies and their learning space is mostly informal. The workplace not only requires people who are employable, but those who can create employment, especially in the South African context where youth unemployment is at its highest. If you’re looking for me, chances are you’ll find me in one of Joburg’s many restaurants and cafés. I love food and trying out new places, especially when they look great. Saturday mornings are always a bit of a slow start for me and I really like to make sure I spoil myself by going through my self-care routine. After making sure I look and feel my best, I usually head to Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream in Parkhurst. Paul’s is by far my favourite spot to indulge in ice cream in the city. Did you know that it has a birthday cake flavour and a new flavour every month?

After trying a new flavour at Paul’s and a stroll around the streets of Parkhurst, I generally head to Social Parkwood. The artwork and décor are really stunning and the food is just as good. Social is an interesting mix of upmarket and shebeen, and the staff are always super friendly. DAY 2 Self-care Sunday! Much like Saturday, I generally make sure I take it easy on Sunday first thing in the morning. Sundays are for taking it slow and easy, no matter what you’re up to. My favourite Sunday morning spot is Spilt Milk Social Café in Melville. It’s one of the newer spots along 7th and you’ll find it across from Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar. There’s a fireplace for those cold winter mornings and I love the chilled boho vibe. They make a mean cup of coffee and have vegan options too. You can thank me for discovering this spot later! After fuelling my body and exploring a few stores around Melville, I love walking to the Melville Koppies and getting some fresh air on one of the hiking trails. Melville Koppies is really underrated and is the perfect way to get in touch with nature without having to travel out of the city. Take a moment on the top of the koppie, look over the city and breathe deeply. What a beautiful city we live in. EVENING
My ideal way to end the weekend is at Montecasino. It’s one of the best locations to stroll around in the evening and it has so many restaurants to choose from, so I’m always trying something new. One of my top picks is The Raj, the food is full of flavour and it really does bring a slice of North India to South Africa. Try the multitude of vegetable dishes or the famous Prawn Malala and Butter Chicken.

Most people don’t set out to become an ‘influencer’. How did you end up in the space? I’ve always loved writing and initially my blog was just a space for me to share what I was thinking or feeling. At the time, I was also exploring Johannesburg, so I started writing about the city. From there, I moved into travel and fashion, and learnt how to take a decent photo. I never set out to be anything, although I definitely used the space to my advantage. I’m not too fond of the term ‘influencer’, I’m just a person who has shared a journey that people have resonated with. I’ve been at it for a while now, the mediums have changed, what’s cool has changed and I’m definitely not the same woman I was almost 10 years ago. Personal branding is a tool, not an Instagram handle; I’ve just managed to learn how to use it really well. How important do you think your personal brand is for your career and where you want to go in life? I use this example a lot. Loads of people can sing; what makes Beyoncé so breathtaking? It’s because she’s Beyoncé, right? One of the few things we have control over is our personal brands; it’s also the only thing that really differentiates us from the crowd. What would you say to people who don’t see how important personal branding is? I probably wouldn’t say much, perhaps just point them in the direction of Google. This isn’t a new thing; it just has a name now. Richard Branson was Richard Branson before Facebook or Instagram were invented; it’s just easier to get your name out there now. I guess the next step is to see what we do with the gift. How do you think the landscape has changed? Personal brands were not always as important,
but they have gained traction over the past years. What are your thoughts on this? Personal brands are more important than ever before because of the way we consume information. Consumers who once trusted brands have moved to trusting individuals; everything has its cycles, though. I don’t think the importance of personal brands for individual brands in the adverting space will ever disappear, people will just get smarter about how they spend their time; in fact, they have already. We’re all getting smarter about how we spend our time; that means the content will have to get smarter too.

What do you think about the term ‘influencer’? A rose by any other name… I understand why that term exists, the world had to call the change in the way it consumed advertising and media something, right? I’ve never considered myself an influencer; I make things, put them out into the world and every now and then, some people like the stuff I make, whether it’s in my personal or professional capacity. I’d be making things whether people cared or not, I guess I got lucky that they did and figured out how to use that to my benefit. How has growing a personal brand impacted your career path? The brand I’ve built has helped me to run my own agency, it has helped me get a seat at the table when there was no chair and it has afforded me experiences that I wouldn’t have otherwise had. In the world of business, personal brands aren’t everything, but they sure give you a better shot at the goals. There’s no difference in the way I treat my brand compared to any of my clients’. I have key performance indicators (KPIs), a strategy and some content to help me reach my objectives. Marketing 101, except I’m the client.

Oprah Winfrey, who has a successful brand because she believed that what she had to offer would make a difference. The same goes for bloggers and influencers. There are so many people who started off with a small personal brand, but were able to branch it off into something bigger than they could have ever imagined simply because they believed in their vision, so believe in your vision and run with it.
Most people don’t set out to become an ‘influencer’. How did you end up in the space? To be honest, it was more of an experimental thing when I first started. While I was in my first year of my degree, I met a photographer and we decided to collaborate because I needed more practice styling and she wanted to practise her photography more. I’d dress up and she’d take pictures of me. Once I started to understand the world of blogging, I realised that this was something I enjoyed and wanted to explore more. How important do you think your personal brand is for your career and where you want to go in life? My personal brand is extremely important for my career; it separates me from everyone else. My brand is something I have built and established over the years, and I’ll continue to grow it. I look at myself as a brand and so everything I do has to be in line with my brand cores, values and aesthetic. By building my brand, I have been able to create a portfolio of work that enabled me to branch out into other spheres in the fashion industry, such as creative direction or content creation for lifestyle, beauty and fashion brands, from behind the scenes. What would you say to someone who doesn’t believe in the importance of personal brands? You lose nothing when you try. I say give it a try if you’ve wanted to start a brand; something amazing might come from it, but you’ll only know if you try. The most important thing is to be consistent and remember that creating a brand doesn’t have to be expensive; use what you have to your full advantage. Think of someone like

What do you think about the term ‘influencer’? I think so many people have bad connotations with the word, but I try not let that affect me. I think the term ‘influencer’ is a great way to describe what my work has the possibility of doing: influencing. Personally, I refer to myself as a content creator because that’s what I do. Do you think you would be where you are today if you hadn’t invested time and energy into your personal brand? I believe we always end where we are meant to end up. The investment of time and energy has furthered me, and I see a lot more benefits when I do put in the work, rather than when I don’t. Most people don’t set out to become an ‘influencer’. How did you end up in the space? I started blogging in 2012. I was in my matric year and only had Facebook at the time. My circle of friends was always interested in what I wore and where I got my clothes, so I blogged about how to wear hand-me-downs or new clothes in different ways that look trendy. A few years later, I found myself straight out of school and in the entertainment industry, and many people wanted advice on how to get into the industry like I did, so I started sharing tips. Instagram has given me the platform to share what I love doing. I have a little space on the internet where I’ve gathered up a following of people who I treat as friends and share parts of my life with while getting to work with brands I love.

How important do you think your personal brand is for your career and where you want to go in life? Extremely important! Finishing school and going straight into the media industry was a huge blessing and gave me lots of experience. Studying further has definitely given me an edge that I didn’t have before. My personal brand is one of the main reasons I decided to study and it’s probably the best thing I’ve done for myself and my career. Now that I am almost done with my degree, I couldn’t be prouder to see where I was and how far I’ve come. What would you say to people who don’t see how important personal branding is? Your personal brand is a reflection of who you are. Stay humble; it’s a blessing to turn something you enjoy into a full-time career and it all depends on how others see
your personal brand. How do you think the landscape has changed? Personal brands were not always as important, but they have gained traction over the past years. What are your thoughts on this? Whether we like to admit it or not, Instagram has changed the marketing game. Brands in South Africa are starting to recognise the importance of influencer marketing, and I truly believe that if your personal brand stands out and if you are chosen to work on a brand, that speaks volumes. It’s hard work putting hours into content creating, filming, editing, scheduling and uploading while still studying, as well as going to meetings and managing a healthy lifestyle all on your own. If you’re putting in the work, brands are going to see it! I always say let your work do the talking. What do you think about the term ‘influencer’? I don’t really like the term ‘influencer’, I prefer the term ‘role model’. It would mean the world to me if my nieces and cousins could one day say that I was their role model, not because of what I do, but because of who I am and what I stand for. How has your line of work impacted your studies, your work and the career you want to have? I love what I do and now that this is my full-time job, I couldn’t be more thankful. Working alongside brands has made me want to study more and allowed me to offer more value in my partnerships. It has broadened my knowledge of who I am as a brand, but also as a consumer. e wanted to change the face of business education… in a country which is often as equally defined by its inequality as its recent deposed kleptocracy,” says Dean Jon FosterPedley of Henley Business School Africa. And that pretty much sums up what establishments of higher education in Joburg are currently doing to improve the status quo. South Africa is a unique beast. Our apartheid system and the abuse suffered by so many before the country became a democracy have created a corporate world where chaos, nepotism, unfairness and uncertainty reign supreme. There are those educationists who are trying to change this, such as Henley Business School Africa. There are others, too, including Johannesburg Business School, whose aim is “to help South Africans build sustainable businesses that create jobs”. Whatever they are doing, these bastions of higher learning are ensuring that change is nigh. And about time, too. Creating higher education programmes within a South African context, ones that are specifically aimed at South Africa and the African continent, is a very different ball game from studying at an institution that offers degrees and diplomas that have only been tried and tested overseas. Let’s also remember, the business world is a constantly evolving one, now extremely technologically charged. Companies operate in new and innovative ways, grappling with the reality that machines will soon will take over from humans to perform various tasks. This will create a new dynamic, where old jobs will disappear and new ones will be created. As things stand right now, upskilling yourself or your child in the 21st century involves being trained for careers and jobs that haven’t even been created yet. In the context of higher education in Joburg, a lot is happening. Let’s take a look… Henley Business School Africa is one of those establishments that has diversified to meet the ever-changing
business environment, accommodating both school leavers and those in established careers. “We had to do this to properly respond to South African and, indeed, African needs, where not everyone comes to business school after a conventional undergraduate degree and time in management,” explains the Dean, Jon Foster-Pedley. “On the contrary, many of our students had the requisite experience and ability, but never the opportunity. We had to create this through our unique academic pathway of learning, which can effectively take someone with a school leaver’s certificate all the way to Master’s level without leaving Henley or, even more importantly, their jobs.” Henley, which started in 2011 as a small locally accredited operation of an overseas business school with 30 students graduating that first year, is now a fully fledged business school with a total student body of 3,500. It is changing the face of business education through innovation, immersive learning and corporate activism. The school doesn’t only offer MBAs, which is what it started off doing; now it offers a selection of executive education programmes and a coaching programme as well as the MBA programme. In 2019, it had the highest number of MBA scholarships on the African continent – 30 in all. “Our students are 70 percent black – maybe more, 50 percent or more women, and the South African MBA students do as well or better than the British or the Germans (at sister Henley establishments),” Dean Foster-Pedley says proudly. At Henley, which is considered one of the best business schools in the country, students enjoy a holistic learning experience that combines theory with practice. In addition, the institution prides itself on being associated with numerous top blue-chip South African, African and international companies, offering students access to a world of opportunities. Johannesburg Business School ( JBS) is part of UJ’s (University of Johannesburg’s) College of Business and Economics. It focuses on assisting small to medium-sized businesses, helping to create jobs and expand the economy. JBS concentrates on an authentically African style of teaching, one

orn and bred in Soweto, Johannesburg, Andile Bhala started taking photos on his cell phone, and fell in love with photography. Today, he cycles through Soweto armed with his camera with the aim of capturing everyday occurrences and moments he can learn from. “It could be a church goer, or a young girl on her way home from school, or friends sharing a drink,” says Bhala. No matter the subject, he’s challenged to question the beauty in his portraits and strives to highlight contrasts in every subject he photographs. “This is the allure of Soweto – to educate, create, learn and inspire. That’s why stories are important to me.” The process of picking his subjects is an intuitive one. To Bhala, it comes naturally. He truly engages with the space and his subjects. “The intimacy of taking a stranger’s photo requires sensitivity to allow reality and the photo to bind in a beautiful way. This is ubuntu, a principle I follow as I traverse the streets of Soweto’s suburbs. I try to capture ubuntu in a single shot,” explains Bhala. His goal? To inspire people to engage and learn about the people of Soweto and their stories. BHALA’S MANIFESTO
Photography has been a beacon in my life. The streets of Soweto, with their bustling life, noise, smiles and legends in the making, compel me to traverse this vast space in search of stories. My bicycle, music playlist, red backpack and lenses are my companions as I seek to see beyond the obvious, beyond the stereotypes. I document the truth with an unwavering belief in the power of the human spirit to overcome the mundane and the complex.

I defend Soweto when it’s in deep slumber. I believe in people and the simple aspects of ubuntu in everyday life. Social documentary photography allows me to observe and document life in all aspects of grandeur, and the minutiae, tenderness and joys of being. Through the camera, I seek to find myself and continue to learn from the streets. I’m drawn to moments that tell stories of dualities and contrasts of life in Soweto. The rawness of the streets is integral to the work. I try not to manipulate the image – the reality in the image must not be lost. I challenge myself to see beyond the cacophony of the environment to capture its beauty. My subjects have a story to tell, some tender and some harsh. My goal is to share a slice of Soweto in a positive way. If I can inspire a young boy to choose photography instead of drugs, then my duty to Soweto will be meaningful. I want those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover the beauty in the most unlikely places.

• Ubudoda: What does it mean to be a man? This question forms the backbone of Bhala’s project – My Soweto. Through the lens, he continues to observe men on the street of Soweto. In this project, he deliberately chooses not to focus on the sensational, but rather on masculinity on its own. The men in his images trust him to tell their stories through these pictures. ne of Africa’s most enigmatic countries, both desolate and beautiful, Namibia’s plains beckon the explorer, the adventurer and the photographer, all keen to capture its soul. Whether you’re visiting for a bucket list experience, a romantic escape or just wishing to conquer its magic, there’s something for you here, a place where very few men dare to set down roots and wild animals reign supreme. The towns of Swakopmund and Lüderitz, not to mention the capital, Windhoek, all have their own special charm, but it’s the great outdoors, the no-man’s-lands of the Skeleton Coast – Kaokoland, Sossusvlei with its legendary dunes and Etosha, the third largest game reserve on the continent – that create a stir in the hearts of the wanderer. And it is in some of these places that three distinct lodges are putting Namibia centre stage.

Namibia defines itself by its unique and very different landscapes, sometimes great distances apart, each alluring and extraordinary, each boasting natural beauty that is rare and special. One of these areas is the Skeleton Coast, a deserted stretch of nothingness that is home to remnants of ships that lost their way at sea. This 1,570km stretch of coastline that fringes Namibia’s northern Atlantic coastline is the place where the desolate Namib Desert meets the sea. Keeping the shipwrecks in their mind’s eye, innovative hoteliers created Shipwreck Lodge, which opened a year ago. With a rugged, remote setting that is paradise for photogaphers, this luxury retreat offers an unmatched safari experience in one of Africa’s most remarkable locations. Uniquely designed around the legendary shipwrecks that are found on the coastline, the lodge is architecturally dramatic. It boasts an unrivalled setting in the hauntingly beautiful Skeleton Coast Concession Area, where towering sand dunes and windswept plains spread towards the horizon and the protection of rare wildlife species is of utmost importance. The only visible blip on this perfect radar is a lone bleached whale or seal bones and those wind-blown remains of over 1,000 ships. Shipwreck Lodge is a rarity, offering luxurious accommodation in this remote area, sheltered from the elements with wood burning stoves, thick fake fur blankets and hot water bottles to keep out the chill in the cold months. The only lodge of its kind in Africa, its sumptuous interiors offer a plush respite from the harsh landscape outside. At the centre of the camp is the restaurant and lounge with a wrap-around deck, offering uninterrupted views across the sand to the Atlantic Ocean. Don’t be fooled though, the Skeleton Coast is not completely remote. It is home to an irreplaceable and vulnerable wildlife habitat, including desert elephant, desert giraffe and the Hartmann’s mountain zebra, all of which are actively being conserved. This exceptional lodge was created by French hotelier Arnaud Zannier, who is renowned for his Cambodian resort, Phum Baitang, and stylish European hotels, including Le Chalet in the French ski resort of Megève. Zannier was told about Namibia by none other than Angelina Jolie, who spent five months in his Cambodian establishment while filming a movie and has also visited the wildlife reserve close to Omaanda, the N/a’an ku sê sanctuary run by conservationists Rudie and Marlice van Vuuren. With their assistance, Zannier bought the land adjoining the reserve in Namibia and built Omaanda there. Zanier has ensured that the sanctuary of N/a’an ku sê is an extension of his property and his mission – cheetah, leopard, lion, rhino, elephant, zebra and a pack of wild dogs live here. They were released into the wild by the sanctuary in the hope that one day they will be released into national parks.

FOR THE ADVENTURER – KAOKOLAND
Kaokoland in north-west Namibia is a remote and wild area, known for its towering mountains, sand dunes and huge expanses of desert. It’s home to the nomadic Himba tribe, whose settlements are dotted here, as well as various forms of wildlife that have adapted to the desert
terrain, including elephants, lions and giraffes. It really is a no-man’sland, an area few will discover in their lifetime, which is what makes it so exciting. The Hoanib River bed in Kaokoland is one of Namibia’s few waterways – it floods once a year, resulting in a shock of lush greenery. This is where you’ll find Hoanib Valley Camp, set on a craggy hillside overlooking the plains. The lodge is located in the Sesfontein Conservancy, a partnership between local communities and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the world’s only Africa-wide giraffe conservation organisation. It’s a really small place, with just six tents to stay in, created by Wilderness Safaris co-founder Colin Bell. You may be isolated here, but the personal touches make sure you’re comfortable, if not enrobed in luxe. The lodge offers a realistic safari experience. It’s definitely one for the adventurous traveller, who’s keen to experience life in the wilds without the trimmings, and whose idea of the finer things in life extends to the surroundings rather than mod cons. hen planning my trip to Paris I had visions of myself acting out scenes from Gossip Girl (think Blair Waldorf post Chuck Bass breakup), An American in Paris and Moulin Rouge all at once. It turns out the City of Lights really is the stuff of dreams, albeit slightly smelly at times. While quaint and breathtakingly beautiful, Paris is by no means a small city. The space is cosy and the kitchen is the heart of the restaurant, creating a rustic feeling we so long for as an escape from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg. The area’s coup de grace is renowned restaurant Est Est Alea - the evolution of Cube Tasting Kitchen. Chef Dario De Angeli is still the man behind the experimental tasting menu and there’s not a night that goes by where you won’t see him or one of his chefs chatting to customers and cooking up a storm in the newly renovated space.

The DIFF is arguably the largest film festival in the country, bringing together around 400 filmmakers from all over the world who come to showcase their films that feature African or South African subject matter. The 12-day festival, held from 18 to 28 July, offers more than 180 screenings around Durban and also includes workshops and talks for aspiring filmmakers. This includes the participation of 20 filmmakers from all over Africa in Talents Durban, in partnership with the Berlin Film Festival and the Durban FilmMart, a film financing and co-production initiative that is organised in partnership with the Durban Film Office. Winners of the 2018 Best International Documentary and Best SA Documentary qualified for Oscar consideration in the 91st Academy Awards held this year.

ROASTED PEPPER, SUNDRIED TOMATO & CHORIZO SOUP Ingredients 5 whole red peppers 1.2kg tomatoes, cut into halves 1 cup sundried tomatoes 1 heaped tbsp paprika 1 tsp sumac 1 can coconut cream 2 tsp salt 150g chorizo, thinly sliced Small handful sage leaves Method Preheat the oven to 200ËšC. Spread the tomatoes out on a roasting tray. Roast in the oven for 40 minutes until soft and gooey. Grill the whole red peppers in the oven along with the tomatoes until slightly charred on the outside. Allow the tomatoes and peppers to cool slightly before blending. Blend the tomatoes, peppers, sundried tomatoes, spices and coconut cream together until smooth. Shallow fry the chorizo over a medium heat along with the sage leaves until crispy and cooked through. Top the soup with the chorizo and sage, a drizzle of olive oil and salt and pepper to taste.

(with crispy kale, butter beans and glazed bacon bits) Ingredients 500g sweet potato 500g cauliflower (head or florets) 150g all-purpose flour (can substitute with cassava flour or gluten-free flour) 6 tbsp salt 125g bacon 1 tsp coconut sugar ½ can butter beans 4 kale leaves 1 tbsp nutritional yeast 1 tsp onion powder 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp cracked black pepper 6-10 tbsp olive oil Method Preheat the oven to 190˚C. To make the gnocchi, peel and chop the sweet potato into medium-sized chunks. Lay out on a baking tray and bake for 1-2 hours until completely soft and baked through. About halfway, add the cauliflower pieces to cook through as well. Alternatively, steam both the sweet potato and cauliflower until soft. Allow to cool slightly before mashing – if mashed when too warm, the sweet potato won’t be light enough. Mash together the sweet potato and cauliflower until very smooth, but still light. Once ready, work in the flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Be careful not to overwork it otherwise the gnocchi will become stodgy. The mixture will look very wet. Flour a large, flat surface and scoop out about 3 heaped tablespoons of gnocchi dough at a time, carefully rolling and shaping the gnocchi into logs. Gently roll the logs into cylinders and cut 3-4 equally sized smaller gnocchi pillows from each log. Add more flour to logs if it’s too sticky to work with. Bring a medium-sized pot of water to the boil and add the remaining salt. Boil gnocchi in batches until they start to rise to the surface of the water. Scoop out the boiled gnocchi, drain and rinse under cold water. Set aside on a tray or plate and drizzle with olive oil until ready to fry. In a large pan, shallow fry the bacon with the coconut sugar until crispy and caramelised. Loosely break the kale leaves off the stalks and massage through the nutritional yeast, onion powder, lemon juice and pepper with your hands. Spread out on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil and allow to crisp up in the oven for 5-10 minutes, just before serving. Add the gnocchi and butter beans to the bacon and shallow fry until the gnocchi turns golden brown in colour. Serve with a dash of salt and cracked pepper.

PUMPKIN COCONUT CRUMBLE PIE Ingredients Filling: 1kg pumpkin, peeled and chopped 1 tbsp coconut oil 1 tbsp honey/maple syrup 1 tsp fresh nutmeg (grated) ¼ tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon 80g coconut or soft brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 eggs 30g cold coconut oil Crust: 1 cup rolled oats ¼ cup desiccated coconut ¼ cup sunflower seeds ¼ cup coconut oil 6 tbsp water 1 tbsp coconut or soft brown sugar Crumble: ⅓ cup rolled oats 3 tbsp sunflower seeds 2 tbsp coconut oil 3 tbsp honey/maple syrup Pinch of salt Pinch of cinnamon

Caramel: ½ cup coconut cream ¼ cup coconut or soft brown sugar Pinch of salt Method Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Roast the pumpkin for 1 hour in coconut oil and honey until very soft. Allow to cool. In a food processor, combine all the crust ingredients. Press into a pie dish until evenly spread, about 5mm thick. Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork before baking. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Blend the cooled pumpkin with the remaining filling ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth. Bake the pie for 15-20 minutes until a firm crust starts to form. To make the crumble, lightly blend all the ingredients until they just come together. Spread out on a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes until golden brown. To serve, spread half a cup of coconut cream or plain double cream yoghurt over the pie, drizzle over some caramel and top with crumble.

SWEET BLACK RICE RISOTTO (with charred kumquats and caramelised banana)
Ingredients 1 cup black rice (soaked overnight) 2 cups water 1 can coconut milk 2 tsp vanilla essence 3 tbsp coconut sugar 1 tbsp lemon juice Ÿ tsp ginger Topping 1 banana, sliced ½ cup whole kumquats, cut into halves 1 tsp coconut oil 1 tsp coconut sugar Handful flaked almonds/coconut flakes Method Soak the black rice overnight or for a minimum of 2 hours in hot water. Bring to a high simmer with the water, coconut milk, vanilla essence, lemon juice, sugar and ginger added. Stir continuously until thick and creamy. Add more water if it cooks too quickly or looks too dry. In a pan, add the kumquats, banana, coconut oil and sugar and fry until caramelised. Serve the black rice with caramelised fruit, toasted almond flakes and additional coconut milk if desired.

ure, white wine isn’t exactly white, but that doesn’t mean it’s still not one of the world’s favourite drinks to sip on summer afternoons or enjoy with a light meal. Wine popped up in Mesopotamia and Egypt around 2500-2000 BC, where it was reserved for royals
and those with gold coins to spare. Over centuries, wine was made popular by the Greeks as they spread it through Europe and, eventually, after many, many years, winemaking made its way down to the tip of Africa. The first vineyard was planted in 1655 in Cape Town and the first wine was

Method Prepare a simple syrup by mixing sugar and water in a small dish and microwaving for 30-second increments until the sugar is dissolved. Once the syrup is ready, add 1 tablespoon to each wine glass. Then add mint leaves and stir/lightly muddle. Next, add several slices each of lemon and lime. Top off with wine and let set for a few minutes so the flavours can meld. Top with more wine and citrus as needed.

Method In a punch bowl, add large pieces of ice to fill it just over halfway. Add the wine, mango rum, peach schnapps, all the citrus, juice and soda water. Serve in glasses garnished with slices of white peach.

KNOW YOUR CHARDONNAY FROM YOUR CHENIN Did you know that there are over 40 different types of white wine? Don’t worry, you don’t have to name every single one of them to really know what white is all about. Here are the eight most popular types of white wine in South Africa. CHENIN BLANC (She-na-blah). South African Chenin Blanc wines are amongst some of the world’s finest. In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is sometimes blended with Sémillon, Viognier and Marsanne to make a richer styled wine similar to an oaked
Chardonnay, but with a sweeter taste. Food pairings: ideal for pork dishes and seafood. CHARDONNAY (Shar-do-nay). Chardonnay is now the most widely planted white grape variety across the world and the wine is named after the green-skinned grapes that are used to make it. Food pairings: a good choice for fish and chicken dishes. SAUVIGNON BLANC (So-veen-yawn Blah). Sauvignon Blanc is South Africa’s most RIESLING (Rees-ling). Originally from the Rhine region in Germany, the Riesling grape is aromatic and sweet and its wine is often honey coloured. Food pairings: the crispness of a Riesling works very well with tuna and salmon.
SÉMILLON (Say-mee-yaw). Sémillon is a grape variety that was once grown on over 90 percent of the wine farms in South Africa. The grape is golden in colour and often partnered with Sauvignon Blanc, adding texture, acidity and body to the blend. Food pairings: ideal for seafood and hard or soft cheese.

Pinot Gris, this grape produces richly textured wine that can vary in colour from copper to light shades of pink. Food pairings: ideal for spicy dishes and cuisine. VIOGNIER (Vee-o-nyei). The Viognier plant is extremely vulnerable, making it a little tougher to find than the other white wine variants. It’s high in alcohol, but without the bite, making it a sweeter white wine than most. Food pairings: ideal for vegetable and salad courses.

NEW ORLEANS FIZZ 45ml gin 15ml lime juice 15ml lemon juice 15ml simple syrup 60ml cream 1 small egg white 2 dashes fleurs d’orange 30ml club soda (more or less)
Method Pour the gin, lemon and lime juices, simple syrup, cream, egg white and fleurs d’orange into a cocktail shaker. Dry shake without ice. Fill the shaker with ice. Shake vigorously again. Strain into a chilled highball glass. Top with club soda.

Method In a mixing glass filled with ice cubes, combine the gin and vermouth, pouring more or less vermouth to your taste. Stir. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with olives.

The restaurant is particularly famous for its takeaway patisserie counter, called Dotty Choux, where Glenda Lederle’s choux pastries delight the senses in various shapes, colours and flavours. The cakes are also a dream – have one made to order, if you like. The most popular is the salted caramel popcorn cake – it’s a movie on a plate.

The store not only offers stunning pastries and cakes; it’s known for its fabulous baguettes and also offers a selection of French cheeses. A best-kept secret, this Dutch bakery with windmill is famous if you live near Edenvale, not so well-known if you don’t. It’s a family business that started in 1963 and is still going strong, offering a taste of Dutch baking as well as a selection of imported items.
Northcliff’s take on great pastry and baked goods, Olivia’s has been charming its patrons since it opened in 2000. Everything here is moreish and tasty. Generous portions of breakfast, cakes and pastries keep customers satisfied and coming back for more, and the variety on the menu is another bonus. Olivia’s pastries are seasonal, artfully inventive and well worth sampling. She’s also known for her wheatless rye bread, quiches and hot buttered Chelsea buns.

An institution in Glenhazel, not only for its fabulous pastries, but also for its friendly atmosphere and varied menu, Frangelicas is the real kosher deal. Jewish pastries and cakes are always generous and mouthwatering, and Frangelicas is the best of the best. The store says it measures its happiness by its cupcakes, to give you an idea. Don’t expect a dainty pastry portion here – you’ll enjoy fabulous flavour and a huge piece. That’s one of the reasons Frangelicas is always busy. There’s so much to enjoy.

This little Italian restaurant and pastry store in Craighall Park has gained a reputation for its delicious pasticceria as much as for its superb Italian dishes. Pastry chef Jackie Right-Boyd started creating her specialty delights in 2013 after honing her skills in a pastry shop in Italy. The results are well worth sampling – each as light as a feather, fragile as a butterfly’s wing and so, so scrumptious.

‘Leeto: A Sam Nhlengethwa Print Retrospective’ explores the print oeuvre of renowned artist Sam Nhlengethwa from 1978 to 2018. The underpinning theme of the exhibition is ‘jazz’ and the curation draws links between the fluid nature of jazz improvisation and the artist’s study of an ever-changing community. One of Joburg’s most renowned artists, Nhlengethwa’s first retrospective exhibition features a rich body of the artist’s print and lithographic works, and explores his ongoing artistic journey over 40 years, capturing the energy and lasting impact of cultural movements that have marked South Africa’s musical community. The artist’s brother was a jazz musician and Nhlengethwa started collecting jazz records at the age of 17. He has successfully exhibited all over the world, including Senegal, New York and Cologne.

She became well-known in the ‘80s for a series of portraits of women involved in the country’s political struggle. Last year, she was the Goodman Gallery’s featured artist at the FNB Joburg Art Fair, where she displayed Messages from the Atlantic Passage, a largescale installation of shackled, suspended glass bottles engraved with profiles of 19th-century slavery victims. Williamson’s works feature in public collections around the world, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Modern and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and many more. She lives and works in Cape Town.

www.apartheidmuseum.org Here’s just another reason to head for the Apartheid Museum this winter – the museum’s George Bizos Gallery is hosting a stunning photographic exhibition featuring a retrospective from two of the country’s most acclaimed photographers, David Goldblatt and Peter Magubane. Magubane worked as a photojournalist and activist during the apartheid era and was imprisoned and in solitary confinement for 586 days. His moving photographs document the time when South Africans were divided and afterwards, when South Africa became a democratic country. Goldblatt also documented the horrors of the apartheid era, but chose to focus more on dayto-day life, creating poignant and iconic black and white photographs that encapsulate South Africa during apartheid as well as in the time of change afterwards. Curator and photographer Paul Weinberg has used the gallery space to present the two photographers’ astute and distinct approaches to the times of brutality and then of change post 1994. Both photographers used different format cameras – Goldblatt used mostly medium and large formats, while Magubane created his images mainly from 35mm format cameras.

Bevan De Wet’s exhibition ‘The Other Landscape’ tells its story in part through the process of its production. The artist starts by revisiting old works, collecting test prints and other detritus from his studio. He then hand cuts, tears, sometimes paints with inks and dyes, folds and embeds these materials into hand-cast paper panels made from sisal fibres. The paper is cast as thin as possible, leaving it almost transparent. Within these newly formed panels, fragments from De Wet’s previous works are revealed. The panels are suspended, allowing visitors to move freely through the space. De Wet says the space speaks to the process of “finding a balance between lightness and weight, suffocation and letting go, vulnerability and illumination, while engaging with notions of displacement and belonging.”

It takes a lot of hard work, planning, writing, generous and creative people, and persistence. I started making Chin Up five years ago and there have been many times where it felt impossible, but it has always been too important to me to tell my

10 minutes WITH LARA LIPSCHITZ Who are you and what do you do? My name is Lara Lipschitz and I’m an actress and writer. I also produce and direct my own show called Chin Up. Acting isn’t the easiest career choice. What has your journey been like in the South African arts scene? Well, I got an agent when I was nine years old, started going for auditions and soon booked a job as one of the YoTV presenters back in 1998 to 2008, which gave me a really great introduction to the entertainment industry. I then went on to study drama at Wits University, which I loved. Since graduating, I have been lucky enough to land some really great roles in musicals like Cabaret and Emotional Creature, plays like Bad Jews and TV shows like Tali’s Wedding Diary. However, I haven’t had as many opportunities as I would have liked, which is the main reason I started writing and creating my own work.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to go into acting? Make your own work, collaborate with creative friends and be persistent. Also, have a hobby or interest outside of acting that makes you happy when you’re not working. What’s your favourite part about being an actress? I love working with interesting people, being on set or on stage and actually doing the work. The worst part is the waiting and the rejection. We hear you’ve just sold your show Chin Up to Showmax? Congratulations! Tell us a little more about the show? Chin Up is a comedy about being an actress in spite of the drama. It’s based on my real life experiences of being an actress in South Africa today, going to castings, dealing with difficult people on set and persevering
