irthdays are strange things. Some numbers seem so much more important than others. Like one and five and 16 and 21. What’s wrong with 14 and 8? Why don’t we ever get a special invitation to a 23rd birthday or a fourth wedding anniversary? But I’m not here to quibble, five is an important number and its Joburg Style’s fifth birthday! And I have to tell you that we’re as excited as a Gupta at an airforce base. Give us a high five! Give us a low five! It’s party time because five really is a great number. Think about it; we have five fingers, a star has five points, we have five senses, there are five Chinese elements, five vowels in the English alphabet and I had five cups of coffee thinking about interesting facts about five. Then I spent five minutes on the Internet to bring you this invaluable snippet of wisdom – punch is a drink that has five ingredients and its name comes from the Hindi word for five. But wait, there’s more! Five was the lucky number for the superstitious French fashion designer Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. In 1921 she chose the fifth day of the fifth month to introduce her new brand of perfume, which she called Chanel No.5. That’s right, five is bigger than seven in many ways, it’s even got its own perfume. Joburg Style has spent five years bringing you the best of Joburg. This special birthday issue is the result of five years of passion for our magazine and the city we call home. Lira is back of the cover, the Big Read has never been bigger, the fashion has never been hotter, the listings are packed and we’ve had a redesign – the magazine equivalent of an eye lift and highlights. That’s right! Time for another high five! And here’s to another fabulous five years of Joburg Style. Oh, and our fabulous new designer Justine Kerr has been with us for five months. She begged me five times to add that...

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted. This is the same amount of food produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa, yet one in every seven people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of five die daily from hunger. Hence the theme for this year’s World Environment Day, 5 June, is Think.Eat.Save, an anti-food waste and food loss campaign to encourage us all to reduce our foodprint. So, select foods that have less of an environmental impact, such as organic foods that do not use chemicals in their production process, and choose to buy locally so that foods are not transported long distances. t is completely possible to be in awe of a star with whom you have little or nothing in common, which explains how celebrities who wear meat, for example, manage to have a huge following. In some cases, however, a true connection only occurs when fans recognise themselves, their sisters, friends or the girl next door in a star and are invested in their success. Lira is such a case; this Afro-soul singer is gracious enough to allow us to believe that we had a hand in her phenomenal success. “I am a product of South Africa,” the singer says more than once. This is no exaggeration; there are very few local artists who have the kind of fan, media and corporate support that Lira enjoys. Her success is not something Lira really thinks about, but she has her ideas about her popularity, one of which is surprisingly pragmatic: “People trust me,” she says. “They trust me to represent them well and to deliver.” That trust was hard won. Since the release of her first album All my Love in 2003, she has worked hard at her craft. She has released many multi-platinum-selling albums - Feel Good, Soul in Mind and Return to Love. She has been nominated for and won numerous accolades, including South African Music Awards (SAMAs), MTV African Awards and the American BET Award last year for Best International Act. Her live performances are hailed as genuine get-down groovathons and have been captured in her Live In Concert – A Celebration, which was South Africa’s Lira has been the first Blu-ray DVD, released in 2009. reigning queen It also doesn’t hurt that she is always elegantly turned out and known by of Afro-soul for fans to be friendly and approachable. close to a decade But it is through her music that Lira has endeared herself most to the world. to be any other way,” she insists before breaking into song with a couple of bars of a Candi Staton song, Victim, singing: “I am a victim of the very songs I sing.” The message of positivity extends to her Facebook fan page, where she has the largest following for a South African musician. The page is packed with gig dates, positive affirmations and snaps of Lira and her team in foreign locations. She is active on the page and engages regularly with her fans. “It helps to bridge the gap while still being non-invasive,” she says. She is often surprised when coming back from her travels, she says, by how interested people are in what she has been up to. “People want to know what I am doing.” Their curiosity is heightened by the fact that Lira is notoriously private about her personal life. I don’t want that pressure.” Lira has been the reigning queen of Afro-soul for close on a decade, but even

Cover Profile

Lira on the cover of the 2008 Spring edition of Joburg Style. Since then, her career has been transformed – and so has the magazine.

if you were not paying close attention, you would have noticed that the ‘Lira’ brand has, in recent years, been working like a well-oiled machine. She is fresh from what must be a career high, having performed at one of United States President Barack Obama’s inaugural balls earlier this year with another South African outfit, Mi Casa. Lira is on countless local and international magazine covers and snagged herself an endorsement deal as the new African ambassador for the electronic giant Samsung. She is a woman at the height of her power; globally she has become the face of Africans making it big and has been warmly received by Americans. This is after intensifying efforts to move into the American music market with the release of the album Rise Again. “They always have such poignant things to say, like ‘we need a voice like yours’.” There are plans for a music tour; a move she says was always on the cards. “They love the music, connect to it.” All of Lira’s achievements are made even more amazing when you consider her journey to where she is now. By the time she first “Creativity sometimes appeared on the cover of this gets compromised by very magazine emulating her being in business” idol, the late Miriam Makeba in 2008, she was well on her way to reinventing her career. The change, which she says started in 2006, was whole and impossible to ignore; she changed her music genre (from pop to Afro-soul and jazz), her style and went natural with her hair. For her the most important change was taking charge of her career. “I took control of my management and financing,” she says. She also surrounded herself with the 22 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

right team – “all who understood my vision and are very loyal.” “I was willing to do the work,” says Lira of her desire to follow her own path. “I understood that whether it was a failure or success, it was mine.” To ensure success, Lira runs her brand as a business. This strategy was also borne out of wanting to protect herself. She heads up her brand and support staff and is fiercely protective and proud of her team, even maternal. She shares a story of the pride she feels when one of her team buys a new car and brings it to her to see before taking it be seen by their parents. She is also proud that she provides medical aid and pension funds for her staff. “I take care of everything so that they can get back to the music.” She admits that it is sometimes difficult to balance the artist and the businesswoman. “Creativity sometimes gets compromised by being in business.” At the cover shoot, however, there are very few signs of compromise. She is in full work mode, a consummate professional, but there is little doubt that she is a creative and a diva. Every so often she bursts into song, including a delightful impromptu performance of happy birthday to Joburg Style magazine a la Marilyn Monroe to President Kennedy, and while she sings, she has the whole room under a spell, not unlike the effect she has on the rest world.

aunted by hunger and driven by sheer survival instinct, they stand day after day on the street corners and the traffic intersections in the hope that, in the brief time that it takes for red to become green, they will elicit, if not an act of kindness or compassion, then perhaps a mere acknowledgement of their own existence. Homeless and destitute, many live alone, on the street, with only their memories and an ever diminishing will to go on. They call themselves the ‘maladaptive’, ‘malunda’, ‘lekatsu’, the ‘out’ies, a term which refers to the fact that they live on the street, or ‘biters’, a metaphor that likens the act of begging for money to a fisherman casting out his line in the hope of catching a fish. But to many of us they are merely degenerates, loiterers, trespassers, tramps, vagrants, deviants; they are the ‘abomalala esikhotheni’, the ‘dingi ndawo’, the ‘malala endle’, ‘die haweloses’, ‘die skadukinders’, or the ‘strollers’. Mostly, however, they are just... invisible. They come from all walks of life and all backgrounds, from the humblest of beginnings to the most opulent. From illiteracy and abject poverty to the hallowed halls of academia. From happy and stable homes to broken and scattered families. It is easy to forget that even the destitute had – and have – families, friends, dreams, hopes, fears and, mostly importantly, a past that merits recounting and reflection. For, even in the downfall of a human being, there is a great deal that can be learnt and understood. Theirs is a life lived at the mercy of others… a life where the good fortune of one day is met by the absolute deprivation of the next and where the frivolous and random generosity and brutality of their fellow man has, itself, become predictable. Yet, despite untold human suffering and degradation, theirs is also a story of the triumph of the human spirit over abject poverty and adversity, albeit sometimes only for a brief moment. They are the men and women that we never see… or want to see. Their presence makes us uncomfortable and their appearance challenges us and threatens to awaken in us that distant nagging sense…. our slumbering conscience. Hmmm… conscience – now there’s an interesting concept. A concept that’s become ever more foreign in an increasingly isolated and unyielding world, where success seems

32 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

to be measured less by one’s humanity than by one’s ability to conceal or deny it. Like many, I too had sat in my car, avoiding eye contact or merely ignoring those standing by my window, cup in hand and palm outstretched. Yet, in the end, it was precisely because of their translucent quality and their apparent anonymity that I found myself unable to turn away. I just couldn’t look away anymore. When I embarked on this journey, my proposition was a simple one: to record and recount the life story of each homeless person that I encountered and, in so doing, to give back to each person that which so many seemed to have lost… their names, their histories, their identities. When the project began I was deeply afraid and uncertain. I had never undertaken anything like this before and I had no idea whether each person that I approached would be open or hostile to what I was proposing to do. During that period I was often overcome by a deep sense of uncertainty whether I possessed the ability to do justice to each person’s life story and to accomplish the objective that I had set out for myself. I have to admit that I am still not certain of this and I don’t think I ever will be. Each day, as I sat on numerous Johannesburg and Pretoria pavements, street corners and shelters interviewing and photographing each person, I could never have known the profound impact that each of them would have on my own life. I could also never have foreseen the kinship and friendship that would develop nor the deep sense of loss that I would later come to experience. In the sufferings and failures of others I came to understand my own weaknesses and limitations. Faced with so much poverty and sadness, I could not but develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the fragility of human life… a life so fragile that the dividing line between wealth and poverty is but a hair’s breadth and where a single event can turn fortune into utter destitution. The purpose of my writing and photography is not to pass moral judgment on society, nor to romanticise or exalt the lives of the homeless and the poor. Instead, its sole purpose is to retell each story as it was conveyed to me in the hope that it will reveal the true humanity of the storyteller in all its strengths and failings. If the only thing that this work achieves is to engender, if only for a brief moment, a sense of compassion for the plight faced by so many fellow South Africans each day, it will have accomplished its goal. By capturing their images and recording their stories I hope to provide a modest platform where each life story, as told to me, can find both a voice and an ear. “The truth is that no one can touch misery and forget that it has happened.” Truman Capote knew it and I know it.

Everyone who sleeps there is expected to do the same – not that there is a choice. The HBC residents, eight or 10 men at any given time, sleep together in the basement below the gym. The ‘rooms’ are demarcated by hanging bed sheets. There isn’t much opportunity for lying in. The day starts and ends with prayer. After morning prayers come chores – straightening rooms and cleaning the gym – and maybe some religious television. (The gym basement is equipped with DStv.) Then it’s time to train.

James has been living and working at the HBC since 2011. He moved to South Africa a few years ago from Nigeria, where he was an amateur national boxing champion. His professional boxing career never took off, and he eventually found himself in South Africa trying to make it in the clothing business. They wander in between 3.30pm and 5pm. George sits on the front step, on the same level with the smallest boy, and holds up the boxing pads. “One-two,” says George. The boy whacks away. George stops to tighten the boy’s gloves. He gently grips the boy’s arm, showing him how to extend at the elbow and keep his wrist straight. “These kids are so fun,” George says. “But you have to be patient with them.” George leads a callisthenics session, jogging around the cement yard with arms extended. A gaggle of children trail behind, along with Michelle, a blond lecturer at Wits who trains in the afternoon. It’s rush hour again; the pavements are full and a rainbow array of taxis inch down Claim Street. The workout ends when the sun goes down. An hour or two later the gym is asleep. Troyeville Jo Buitendach explores this sometimes forgotten, but never disappointing, creative hub in the Joburg inner city

52 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

A bit of background

Troyeville is located high up on the eastern outskirts of Johannesburg, gazing over the rest of the Joburg CBD and its beloved city skyline. The suburb is one historic gem among many, being surrounded by Fairview, Jeppestown and Bertrams. In common with other areas on this edge of the city, Troyeville has, since its inception, been a popular choice for migrant communities, from its earliest Jewish and Portuguese

Troyeville has been, and still is, a magnet for artists, musicians, academics and free thinkers inhabitants to its present community of African immigrants hailing from Mozambique and much of the African continent. During its history Troyeville has been, and still is, a magnet for artists, musicians, academics and free thinkers. Probably the most famous of these personalities was a young, wide-eyed Mahatma Gandhi, who called this area ‘home’ in the early 1900s. So why not head over to Troyeville, explore some of its well-known spots and meet some of its eccentric and welcoming residents – you definitely won’t be disappointed.

Must-dos in Troyeville

S

trolling along under old oak trees, with dappled sunlight hitting my face, the delicious aromas of peri-peri and chilli waft through the air. Children are laughing loudly as they play in the park or on the street. Mothers watch them from the small ramshackle verandas of their historic ironroofed houses, which, in recent years, are often adorned with bright graffiti. Church music and choirs can be heard on nearly every block, which isn’t surprising as Troyeville boasts more churches than any other area in Jozi. The local community greets you warmly, asking, “Shoot me, Shoot me!” – which is no reason to panic as this is just a photo request. Troyeville isn’t the trendiest inner city precinct but that’s ok, because what makes Troyeville special is its people, history, art and diverse culture. For some locals a visit to the inner city means exploring some of the hip, newly regenerated areas, but why not venture a little farther and discover one of Johannesburg’s quirkiest historic areas like Troyeville, which is full of surprises and unique experiences?

SpAzA GAllery A visit to this small community art gallery and non-profit organisation is a must-do when in the area. The Spaza Gallery was started in 2002 by one of Joburg’s inner city artistic stalwarts, Andrew Lindsay. Based in an old house and surrounding garden, Spaza is a colourful explosion of artworks, sculptures and mosaics, while its ramshackle nature only makes it more appealing. Intricate mosaics are the gallery’s speciality and, if you have noticed the large number of mosaics sprinkled all over the Joburg CBD, chances are this gallery is responsible for them. Spaza also mentors and trains young artists who really appreciate the public’s support – surely that’s enough reason for some retail therapy at the gallery? So pop in, meet the locals and enjoy some light refreshments. Local’s tip: When visiting the Spaza Gallery, buy the Underground Jozi Map created by Gallery founder Lindsay. This colourful, handdrawn map of Joburg (Soweto can be found on the reverse side) is a fun way to experience the city like a local and features some of Jozi’s most amusing intricacies – from religious gatherings in Yeoville to security tips from a local. The map comes in a large, fold-out option, postcard size and even on a gift bag. Contact 082 494 3275, or visit Spaza Gallery, 19 Wilhelmina Street www.joburgstyle.co.za | 53

The Troyeville hoTel As one of Johannesburg’s institutions, the Troyeville Hotel is definitely a must-visit, but be warned: once you arrive, you won’t want to leave. Known for its great hospitality, this is the perfect place to have a beer before a rugby or soccer match at Ellis Park. The Hotel has both a bar and restaurant (named the Flamingo Room), which serves an array of seafood and Portuguese cuisine; top picks on the menu are the prawns and peri-peri chicken. The Troyeville Hotel is also known for hosting book launches and events that offer talks by some of South Africa’s top authors – so whether sport is your thing or if you are a culture vulture, give it a whirl. DaviD WebsTer Park Situated in the heart of Troyeville, David Webster Park offers the local community a green lung and a space filled with art and amenities. Originally called Bloemenhof Park, it was renamed after anti-apartheid activist David Webster, a former resident of the area who was assassinated in 1989 by a covert unit of the South African Defence Force. The park is now home to beautiful public art, mosaics and playground equipment. David Webster Park is definitely worth a visit for the art alone and provides a great picnic venue for the whole family. Junction of Princess and Clarence Streets a PlaygrounD for local graffiTi arTisTs As crazy as it may seem, a walk around Troyeville could bring you face to face with a bright green dragon, a large UFO or even a ‘fokken prawn’ from the movie District 9. Ok, so they are only graffiti versions, but in the last few years, Troyeville has become a canvas for Johannesburg’s fast growing graffiti industry. Some of Johannesburg’s top graffiti artists (Rasty, Love, Bias and Mars, to name a few) work regularly in the area and their creations are definitely worth viewing. Local’s tip: Start in the area around David Webster Park and head south towards Fairview. Some of the best art on offer can be found in this precinct, including work by international artists Kid Creole and Boogie, from the island Reunion. The Troyeville beDTime sTory Johannesburg is littered with amazing public art, but one of the quirkiest pieces on offer is the Troyeville Bedtime Story by local Troyeville artist and community activist Lesley Perkes. What started as a strange platform on the side of the road with no apparent purpose, has become (with Perkes’ creative genius) a work of art comprising a cement bed and headboard that the community is encouraged to interact with (sometimes in their pyjamas and under a duvet!). This simple project has reactivated a once forgotten and ignored space. Troyeville Bedtime Story, cnr Bezuidenhout and Viljoen Streets

A PLACE CALLED

HOME The eco-house at New Jerusalem Children’s Home in Joburg is more than a safe haven for orphaned and vulnerable children, it is also an example of how ecofriendly living can be beautiful and cost-effective

ew Jerusalem Children’s Home was founded in 2000 by Advocate Anna Mojapelo, a prominent businesswomen and reputable community developer, together with her sister Phina Mojapelo, a social worker who has years of experience working with children. The home currently takes care of 80 children, from newborns to children aged 16 – many of whom are fighting HIV/Aids. The central aim of the New Jerusalem Home is to ensure the well-being of the children, as well as to optimise their future opportunities. All development at the home revolves around their education and the protection of the environment in which they live. The environmentally friendly house will accommodate 30 of the 80 children who are currently housed by the home. The house was constructed using 28 recycled shipping containers and most of the materials used in the construction and design process were made from recycled materials. Not only is the house eco-friendly, but it is aesthetically exciting and comfortable to live in. Dr Adrienne Feldner-Busztin, a consulting industrial psychologist, had much to say about the variety of paint Plascon donated. “The children are both inspired by the bright orange and purple accent colours and calmed by the natural, earthy shades in the house. Indeed, their reaction to the colours is a good reflection of the incredible transformation that has occurred in these children since moving into the house. Almost immediately, their self-esteem increased, they became calm, co-operative and interactive and seem to now exude an optimism they never seemed to have before.” Says Patrick Seager, CSI manager for Plascon: “We are always looking for opportunities to spread colour into the lives of disadvantaged children. The central aim This project was an easy is to ensure the choice for its obvious support of both children and the environment – we are proud to have been able to contribute towards it.” Primary colours are used on the furniture to animate the living rooms of the home while the walls are painted in a neutral and practical off-white that ensures the spaces are bright and welcoming.

genuine home-grown treasure, Benny Masekwameng’s culinary genius lies in his belief that food should not be clichéd, but should be appreciated for its simplicity and natural perfection. Lured into the culinary world by his mother, who supplied meals to construction workers in Alexandra for additional income, Benny believes that helping out in his mom’s kitchen set him off on his impressive culinary journey. A perfect gentleman with an easy smile, Benny is passionate about sharing his culinary knowledge. Having studied catering management at Natal Technikon and with extensive experience locally and abroad, Benny believes that South Africa is on par with international standards of culinary flair and quality. His signature style is to craft South Africa’s favourite dishes in an unexpected modern presentation, revolutionising the textures, while including the natural flavours of organic ingredients – bringing personality, culinary know-how and a dash of intrigue to the table. A proudly South African chef, he focuses on using fresh, natural ingredients procured locally. This tastemaker is in demand by all who seek an expert view on what constitutes culinary excellence. Braised oxtail Serves 4

Ingredients 1,5kg oxtail Cake flour, for dusting Salt and pepper 45ml (3 tbsp) oil 15ml (1 tbsp) tomato paste 1 onion, finely chopped 1 leek, finely chopped 1 celery stick, finely chopped 1 carrot, peeled and chopped 2-3 cloves garlic, crushed 250ml (1 cup) red wine 750ml (3 cups) beef stock 1 bay leaf Method • Coat the oxtail in flour seasoned with salt and pepper. • Heat the oil in a large pot and brown the meat over medium heat, taking care not to burn it. • Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring continuously, for about 5 minutes. • Add the onion, leek, celery, carrot and garlic and cook for 10 minutes. • Stir in the wine and stock. Add the bay leaf and simmer gently for 3-4 hours until tender. Don’t forget to add extra stock if it gets too dry.

Benny suggests serving this hearty braised oxtail stew in true Mzansi style; either with cabbage and pap or samp, or steamed dumplings and chakalaka.

The story of

rum

When is a drink not just a drink? When it plays a pivotal role in history. And perhaps no beverage has shaped the course of history more significantly than rum

S

haping the course of history is quite a responsibility for a beverage, but such was the power and impact of rum on the 17th and early 18th centuries. Of course, it was sugar, not rum, that Europeans were after when they first began to cultivate sugar cane in the West Indies. Christopher Columbus carried sugar cane (a giant grass native to India) to the New World. The environment of the Caribbean proved perfectly suited for growing cane, and Caribbean sugar quickly came to satisfy Europe's prodigious sweet tooth. This, then, is where our story really begins. Converting cane into sugar is an industrial process that produces byproducts: cane juice and molasses. Caribbean islanders soon began converting these by-products into cheap liquor, known first as kill-devil, then later as rumbullion, and then simply as rum. This was powerful stuff. An early critic referred to it as "hot, hellish, and terrible". Not much of a tagline, perhaps. But no matter, there was an eager market for rum just north of the Caribbean. In the fledgling American colonies, precious few alcoholic options existed. Wine and beer often spoiled en route from Europe. And neither beer-making grains nor winemaking grapes grew well in the soils and climate of the original colonies. Rum from the islands was cheap and plentiful. For American colonists, it was 'never mind the www.joburgstyle.co.za | 77

The British Royal Navy diluted rum for the sailors with sugar and lime juice to control bad behaviour. This move went well beyond salvaging a measure of shipboard sobriety, it solved the problem of scurvy. The vitamin C in the citrus juice added to the rum helped stave off this wasting disease, making English sailors, the limeys, a far healthier fighting force. Their choice of refreshment probably contributed to their dominance of the seas.

terrible, just bring the heat!' However, cheaper than importing barrels of rum into the colonies was simply importing molasses and then converting it into rum themselves. It wasn't long before rum distillation became a substantial part of the New England economy.

Rum's dark side

The story of rum is not all tiny umbrellas, cheap thrills and challenging hangovers. It is also the story of incomparable cruelty and tremendous suffering. The Caribbean sugar industry condemned thousands of Africans to slavery in the Americas. For a labour-intensive industry, slaves ensured maximum production and maximum profits for the plantation owners. And the currency used to buy these additional slaves was rum. Like three points of a triangle, islands of the Caribbean sent molasses to New England; in turn, New England shipped barrels of rum to Africa, where it was used to buy slaves; and finally, slaves were taken to the New World to produce more sugar and molasses, further fuelling the Triangle Trade.

There's gonna be a rumble

In the American colonies, meanwhile, trouble was brewing with Mother England. Rum production was enriching the colonies, and the crown wanted its cut. Not only that, but much of New England’s molasses was being purchased from French sugar plantations, not English, at a time when France was England's dearest enemy. In 1733, the crown levied a tax on all molasses imported from French islands. 78 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Though the colonists mostly ignored the decree, it nevertheless began a conflict over taxation between the colonies and England that would become increasingly heated and eventually result in rebellion. "Molasses was an essential ingredient in American independence," John Adams would later remark.

scored a decisive naval victory against a combined French and Spanish armada at the historic Battle of Trafalgar. With the benefit of hindsight, it is not too far-fetched to imagine that a simple choice of refreshment might well have contributed to England’s continued dominance of the seas.

The story of rum is not all tiny umbrellas, cheap thrills and challenging hangovers. It's also the story of incomparable cruelty Rum and the British

It was not all bad news for England. For decades, the Royal Navy had kept sailors' spirits seaworthy by plying them with rations of brandy or beer. But as rum production picked up on English islands of the Caribbean, the Royal Navy switched to the home team's tipple: rum. Rum, of course, is more alcoholic than beer. The name rumbullion means ‘rowdy brawl’. As melees and bad behaviour undermined naval discipline, commanders soon hit upon the idea of cutting the booze with a bit of sugar and some lemon or lime juice. The unintended genius of this move went well beyond salvaging a measure of shipboard sobriety or hitting upon a tasty new cocktail. Without knowing it, the Royal Navy had solved a problem that had been endemic to long distance sea travel: the ravages of scurvy. The vitamin C in the citrus juice added to the rum helped stave off this wasting disease, making English sailors, the limeys, a far healthier (and probably more robust) fighting force. In 1805, the English

Decline and rise

The Royal Navy continued to give rum rations until 1970. But overall, rum began to lose traction back in the 1800s. In America, westward expansion away from the Eastern seaboard into the heart of the continent lent itself more to whisky production and consumption. The French Revolution led to the abandonment of slavery on humanitarian grounds. Gradually, all the nations of Europe abandoned this cruel practice. Sugar, molasses, and rum production went into decline. Today, however, the popularity of rum is once again on the upswing. Modern rum production employs thousands of islanders and contributes wealth to local economies. Sales of rum have been sparked by a renewed American interest in cocktails. Of all the liquors, rum is perhaps the most cocktail friendly. As the Royal Navy figured out two centuries ago, a bit of rum, a splash of lime and a taste of something sweet makes a great drink, with or without colourful tiny umbrellas.

Ja, if you’re going to go bundu bashing with lions, Ignatius is your man and Tau is the place

very game lodge in Africa will tell you this, but I can confirm that Tau Game Lodge in the North West promises one of the most intense game viewing experiences ever. Having travelled all over southern Africa as a writer and travel journalist, I can honestly say I have never had so many close encounters with Africa’s incredible animals. I know some of it is luck and timing and weather and whatever, but we got up close to a lion kill, a very wet, angry rhino, an elephant bull that sent us on a very long return journey to camp because he wouldn’t let us cross a bridge, a herd of more than 30 elephant grazing and a pack of wild dogs hunting and killing a wildebeest and her calf. We also followed two male lions marking their territory. They were so focused on seeing off rival males that we were able to get insanely close to them. Turn the page and you’ll see a picture of my children with their beloved binoculars. But, as you will notice, the binoculars were not really necessary at a distance of two metres. Ignatius Bogatsu was our ranger and what an extraordinary guide he turned out to be. You get good rangers, friendly rangers, goodlooking rangers, dumb rangers, drunk rangers, weird rangers and some who wanted to be a cook but failed the pastry course. So when you get a great ranger, a whole new world opens up – and Ignatius at Tau is a revelation. He knows his stuff; from animals and birds to the history of the area and conservation in general, Ignatius is informed and intelligent. He is also strict: No wimps. Any attempts to wriggle out of early morning drives were swiftly dealt with. So was an attempt on my part to escape a night drive in a storm. “Isn’t it too cold?” I asked. So he threw a blanket at me. “Won’t the children get wet?” I continued. So he threw four raincoats at me. “It’s quite a storm Ignatius!” I continued. “Yes, we need the rain.” “It looks like it’s set in for the night,” I insisted. “An hour max.” Ja, Africa is not for sissies and Ignatius makes sure of it. He has rules too, serious rules that are enforced swiftly and strictly. No big boozers. Hitting the bottle before the sun hit the yardarm (or horizon in bush terms) was a no-no. Unusual for a khaki man because most rangers ply their guests with liquor as early as possible – presumably to shut us up. No animal whisperers: No ‘here kitty kitty’ sounds at the lions to get their attention for photographs. There were Canadians on board who whispered “Ksksksksksks...” when they saw their first lion. Ignatius disciplined them immediately by pointing out the vast difference between an African lion and a Canadian pussy cat. 90 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

8:30 BREAKFAST

It is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that is certainly enough reason to treat yourself to an indulgent meal from Salvation Café (011 482 7795) at the trendy 44 Stanley Road Precinct in Milpark. Ask any Joburg foodie where you can get the best breakfast, and they’ll certainly say that the eggs benedict at this pretty little café is a must. If the weather is good, sit outside under the olive trees and catch a bit of the morning sun.

Whether you love the French provincial look or prefer retro, the second hand and antique shops in Albertsville are a must. Situated near Northcliff, Albertsville’s 5th Street is a veritable Pandora’s box, with vintage goodies, signs, tools and furniture. Start on one side and work your way down the street and you will struggle to go away emptyhanded. Allow about two hours for a slow amble through the area.

13:15 LUNCH TIME

Nothing builds up an appetite like shopping, and since you are in the area, it seems only fitting that you have lunch at Northcliff’s Petits Fours (011 782 1778). This French-themed bakery and restaurant is a favourite with the local ‘ladies who lunch’ and for good reason – the burgers, quiches and salads are yummy. Remember to leave space for Petits Fours’ huge selection of sweet treats, from pies to gluten-free cakes and bright macaroons. And don’t even get me started on the vast array of cheesecakes, baked to fridge, salted caramel or Turkish delight, all lined up under shiny bell jars, ready for you to take your pick.

15:20 AFTERNOON ADVENTURES

After a relaxed morning and great food, a light stroll is definitely needed. Why not head to Joburg’s inner city and spend some time exploring the financial district’s Main Street Heritage Trail (between Rissik and Ntemi Piliso Streets), which is home to many of Johannesburg’s powerful mining houses and banks. This street has been regenerated and a fascinating trail has been added. With the focus on mining, Joburg’s beginnings and architecture, this is a great introduction to the city.

18:45 SUNDOWNERS

Joburg might not have a beach or mountain, but we do have a beautiful city skyline. There is no better spot to watch the sun set over the city than the 50th floor viewing deck of Johannesburg’s tallest building, Carlton Centre. Known as the Top of Africa (011 308 1331), it is pretty basic, but there is a reason that locals and tourists alike have been making their way to this spot for decades – its 360 degree view. So why not try a local beer (yes, there is a bar on the 50th floor) and watch the sun go down over the City of Gold? Underground parking is available off Main, Marshall and Kruis Streets.

20:30 DINNER AND DANCING

Night time in Jozi sees the cool kids come out to play, and one of the best places to join in the fun is at Great Dane (011 403 1136), a cosy bar in Braamfontein. Get there early to ensure a table and get a bite to eat. But this isn’t your normal, run-of-the-mill pub food; gourmet hotdogs and home-made fries are their speciality. The food is absolutely delicious with loads of different toppings to choose from – vegetarians need not worry as there is a yummy falafel-style hotdog for you too! Although Great Dane is pretty chilled during the day and early evenings, at night it is a great place to party, listen to some awesome DJs and dance the night away until the early morning!

BRIDGE SWINGING ELS KARATE

Okay, we all have a Bruce Lee in us somewhere, so let’s do some karate. The word means ‘empty hand’ in Japanese and it is a martial art of self defence using the human body in the most scientific and effective way. Karate incorporates blocking, punching, striking and kicking. The South African JKA organisation uses the above, together with related movements such as grappling and throwing techniques, to overcome one or more assailants who may be unarmed or carrying weapons. Sensai Andrew Els offers classes three times a week; Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Contact 072 140 1839 102 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

MY PLACE

Angelo Haitas explains how his love of food, travel and Greek culture has made Plaka and Mezepoli successful restaurants

Mezepoli Meze & Wine Bar and Plaka

Tell us about Mezepoli Meze and Wine Bar and Plaka. Plaka was first established in 1993 as a small taverna and has since evolved into a leader in the SA restaurant industry. Site locations and décor are contemporary and sophisticated and the cornerstones of the business remain unchanged; the atmosphere is welcoming, service is attentive and sincere, and only best quality ingredients are used to prepare traditional Greek dishes. Mezepoli is a spin-off from Plaka. Although the menu has a strong Greek influence, Mezepoli is a tapas and wine bar featuring dishes from all over the world. The DNA of the Mezepoli concept is urban chic dining that is sophisticated yet casually trendy. The style of food served is in the meze tradition, which offers small portions to allow diners to taste lots of different dishes. What are the signature dishes? There are so many dishes at both Plaka and Mezepoli that can be labelled as signature dishes, such as the whole line fish or Youvetsi at Plaka or the sliced beef fillet or peri peri baby chicken at Mezepoli. But there is such a spread of dishes ordered by patrons that it is quite difficult to single out any one dish. What is your favourite dish? It is really difficult to select just one dish. I enjoy sampling lots of tastes and always vary my combinations... Please explain? …they are simple and work well and I’m often flattered when dishes we create pop up on menus in other establishments. The Mezepoli menu is

also complemented by many dishes from various parts of the world including Italian, Spanish and Sushi, and is influenced by our experiences on our travels. What role do you play in the business? I don’t think of myself as carrying a title; instead of being labelled the CEO I prefer to think of myself as the ‘Conductor’. I manage our head office but because we maintain interest in our stores, I act as both franchisor and franchisee. I’m therefore responsible for the development, management and overseeing of the restaurants and brand. What are your biggest business challenges? Business challenges are an ever-moving target. Issues such as the worldwide economic downturn and changes in social trends are what I call the ‘surprise’ challenges. Our consistent challenges are maintaining our levels of service and product as well as staff retention. What are your future plans for the business? Despite a challenging economy we have significantly grown our business over the last five years. It is, however, important to focus on existing operations and consolidate our position of strength; up to now I think we have been going in the right direction and the right pace. We are always looking for more opportunities and are well positioned to expand our footprint. What do you love about your business? There is obviously a serious passion for food (and fine wine) that www.joburgstyle.co.za | 119

Shop

runs in my blood, so the product is a plus for me. Then there is the Greek hospitality that has been ingrained in me, which explains why I love the feeling of satisfying our patrons beyond their expectations. In hindsight, what would you do differently? Tricky question! We always look back and assess what we’ve done and how we could’ve done it better. That is important, but everything we do is part of the process and a factor in defining who we are. I’m happy about where we are for now. So what would I change? Not much! What would you do if you weren’t in the restaurant business? I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. The restaurant business is extremely challenging and requires focus on many different facets; a finger on the pulse at all times. So if one can do this then they are arguably extremely well prepared to be involved in any other business. How do you relax? Quiet time with close family and friends (although it’s usually not that quiet!), and generally by taking short breaks and getting away as often as possible to reset from the routine of everyday life. I must admit that I also do enjoy the occasional dose of adrenaline, so I’m always on the lookout for the next thrill-seeking activity.

The shopping experience at Stylemology is simple. The website offers multiple views of each item for consumer convenience.

We believe that people are not defined by one thing, but by many interesting, dynamic aspects of life

How did you get into the retail industry? I moved to London after studying in South Africa and worked for high street giant River Island. This gave me inside knowledge about the fast-paced world of high street fashion. I returned home earlier this year to head up the buying division at Stylemology. What can customers expect to find? Stylemology is pushing the boundaries on many levels. We merge creative energy with the ever-changing fashion industry to offer you an exciting, new and unconventional way of shopping. Tell us about your customers. We believe that people are not defined by one thing, but by many interesting, dynamic aspects of life. Our customers are looking for that fashion item that will differentiate them from the pack, yet offer them their basic need… which is to look and feel good. Was an online store a logical extension? Everything is moving in the online/ecommerce direction. We believe that South Africa is ready to embrace the online shopping experience… it’s the perfect time to launch this now. What’s the most popular item online? Our women’s dresses and men’s tees do really well… they are different yet wearable. We are also getting a lot of coverage on our women’s handbags and shoes… again they are wearable, yet totally outstanding. What is the biggest challenge with an online store? The obvious challenge is that

customers can’t physically try on anything before they commit to purchasing it, but also the whole ‘mall’ mentality of rather going to Sandton City than sitting on your iPad and ordering what you want. Online shopping is the biggest growing business in the United States, United Kingdom, China and Australia. South Africans now have to have the confidence to ‘click and buy’. Where do you source your merchandise? From all over the world. Our designers travel extensively to know what is current and what is missing in the local market. How do you tap into styles, moods, trends and mindsets? We are on a route of discovery at the moment; the way Stylemology will set itself apart from its competition is by being able to create and offer fashion pieces as well as become a platform for individuals to use in order to stand out. How does the South African market differ from the Australian one? Online shopping is much bigger and more explored in Australia. Although we share the same season, the Aussie market draws a lot of its inspiration from street styles and is open to new and greener ways of manufacturing garments. Future plans? To offer South Africa and Australia cutting edge fashion pieces and ultimately become a global name on everyone’s lips. www.joburgstyle.co.za | 139

The hype

F

around

hybrids All around the world, industries are going green and the motor industry is no exception, writes Lance Levitas

rom celebrities to politicians, individuals are choosing cars that show they care about the environment. Motorists are becoming more interested in improving their fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions while vehicle manufacturers are committed to providing safer, high-tech, environmentally friendly and highly fuel efficient new products. South Africa is keen on bringing electric cars into the market and is putting in place a set of incentives for the production of these vehicles locally, thereby reducing the country’s carbon footprint and creating jobs. As development takes place, transportation demand will grow. Vehicle manufacturing must adopt new technology for lower emissions. Incentives for consumers who buy the electric vehicles have also been considered. The public has not yet warmed up to the idea of electric vehicles and government would consider purchasing these vehicles if they are manufactured locally. Hybrids have been available to the car buying public for more than 10 years. It all started when Toyota released the first generation Prius to the Japanese market in 1997, and hybrids have morphed into different forms ever since. A hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources

to move the vehicle. The term most commonly refers to Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), which combine an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors. However, other mechanisms to capture and utilise energy are included. The hybrid vehicle typically achieves greater fuel economy and lower emissions than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. But some argue that hybrid technology – and the accompanying price premium – are just pulling the wool over our eyes and they are just another way that money Some argue that hybrid hungry automobile technology – and the manufacturers have accompanying price found to deposit premium – are just pulling more of our monthly pay cheque into their the wool over our eyes bulging pockets. There are indeed instances where regular fuel-injected engines actually offer clean emissions and excellent fuel mileage without the complicated battery and motor apparatuses that comprise hybrids. When a small economy car fits your needs and budget, you may choose an efficient four-cylinder model and utilise smart fuel saving technologies. That’s not only easier on the earth and the fuel budget, it nixes that hybrid premium. However, hybrid packages really strut their stuff in applications where the electric motor supplies substantial power – enough www.joburgstyle.co.za | 141

Many leading car manufacturers are now offering a range of plug-in hybrids or models that combine an internal combustion engine with secondary electric motors to propel the vehicle.

142 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

to propel the vehicle under very light load and speed or provide a healthy boost to an efficient, but downsized, internal combustion engine. These are the cases where a particular vehicle may ordinarily have an X-sized engine, but the addition of a hybrid package allows for a smaller Y-sized

When one factors in the initial investment, the average consumer has to have considerably higher mileage to make it pay off. However, if they keep it long enough and they drive it many miles they will in fact save considerably.

It’s going to take continued commitment, dedication to efficiency and passion to keep us on the path to a cleaner and sustainable energy future

Another financial consideration for those purchasing a vehicle is the carbon tax, which serves as a clear call to action for all vehicle manufacturers in South Africa. Passenger cars are taxed based on their carbon emissions. This adds approximately R750 to R25,000 to the cost of a new car, depending on the type of car and its emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions need to be measured and effectively managed to avoid heightened exposure to this future tax. While cynics may view the tax as a way to generate new sources of government revenue from already overburdened consumers, the tax actually has the intention of supporting a resource efficient economy in aid of South Africa’s longer term competitiveness while stimulating investment in new industrial sectors. This tax will provide the economic motivation to achieve this objective. Any liability of tax can be substantially reduced by companies mitigating their emissions. Many of the large emitters will be able to reduce their exposure to the liability substantially through ensuring energy is used efficiently, partially displacing their electricity usage through on-site renewable energy generation, and reducing waste streams, among other areas. The technologies and knowledge currently exist to achieve many of these reductions. There are also positive benefits that could flow from activities such as encouraging investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy, developing new markets, encouraging the research and development of green technologies, decoupling emissions from economic growth and, in future, allowing South Africa to remain competitive in a resource constrained global economy. But whether you buy into the battery motor engine concept or not, every hybrid on the road today is already saving fuel and slashing emissions. And that’s another step in the right direction – a direction that involves many different parts, people and technologies. There isn’t one right way or one huge answer that’s going to get us out of the hole we got ourselves in. It’s going to take continued commitment, dedication to efficiency and passion to keep us on the path to a cleaner and sustainable energy future.

engine with the idea that the electric motor and battery would carry a significant portion of the load. Under these conditions, the total emissions and fuel consumed per kilometre does drop considerably compared to an engine-only version of the same vehicle. While some manufacturers have put hybrid packages in otherwise light and efficient cars with no real engine redesign (resulting in minimal return on investment), there are models that do give serious bang for the buck. Despite hybrids’ promise of improved fuel consumption and lower emissions, hybrids are likely to constitute only a modest portion of all vehicle sales for the foreseeable future. One explanation for the hybrid’s lag behind non-hybrid vehicles is automakers’ inability to keep up with the demand. Another reason that hybrids likely have trouble gaining traction in the vehicle market is their cost. For hybrids to compete, car manufacturers are going to have to get the costs down. Whether hybrid owners can recoup their higher initial investment through savings at the fuel pump depends on the model of hybrid they drive and how long they own the vehicle.

Do we really need the carbon emissions tax?

Humour

Joburg Celeb City

T

From the mouth of Chester Missing

he policeman who arrested Oscar Pistorius is an alleged attempted murderer. You know you live in Gauteng when even the guy who arrests you for murder has attempted murder charges against him. It’s crazy days man! Joburg is a city of workers, sugar daddies and celebs. The only guy in Joburg who is all of these things is the President. With respect to Msholozi, sugar daddies are just paedophiles with Edgars Club cards. But to be honest, our celebs also need a slap. Take the TV show Top Billing. The problem with Top Billing is that it pretends that all that schmaltzy cheesiness is normal – in their world we all have smiles whiter than Lindiwe Mazibuko’s politics. Khanyi Mbau fakes orgasms and Top Billing fakes everything else. Being a celebrity in Joburg is like that. First you have to understand that there are only five ways to get loaded in South Africa: 1) marry a Gupta, 2) sell botox to Helen Zille, 3) work hard, 4) get a tender, 5) become a celebrity. Becoming a celebrity is piss easy. You don’t even need to have talent, especially if you get to act on Generations. The problem is getting to the top of the B-list. Only the fakest make it there. That’s why I like Khanyi Mbau. She’s honest about being shallow. If Khanyi Mbau were any shallower, Baby Jake could use her as a swimming pool. In fact, I think she deserves an award for being so honestly fake. Julius Malema should have nationalised her. She’s the best gold digger we have. So many of these celebs don’t get that the things they say and do are shaping South African popular culture. Directly. Politicians have political power. Capitalists have economic power. Celebs have social power. They will whine and moan that they didn’t ask for it… but that’s a big fat lie. The moment that camera is out they fight like lemmings to get in front. The problem is that they make being shallow aspirational. Why do people called ‘Milkshake’ and ‘Euphonic’ get hero status ahead of our doctors, teachers and police officers? What do we aspire to be? That’s the problem with celebs. They think they’re Die Antwoord, but they’re not. We need to laugh at them. We need to get Jeannie D to have a kid with DJ Ready D. They could call the kid ‘Sunshine’…D. Chester Missing is a political analyst puppet on Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola. Catch him and his ventriloquist, Conrad Koch, live at the Market Theatre from 30 April to 2 June. Book at Computicket.
