t’s the most wonderful time of the year in Joburg and throughout the country. Festive decorations and gifts have been in stores for a while now and people are starting to wrap up the working year and head to the coast. The City of Gold is quiet, but if you’re going to ‘Romania’ over the summer holidays, there’ll still be plenty for you to get up to – we tell you all about it in this issue of Joburg Style. It’s our ‘Best Of’ issue and we’ve given you the best of everything in the city, the country and internationally. In our Photo Essay, Anthony Bila captures the many faces that make our city amazing. In our Fashion Spread, we showcase the best T-shirt, workwear, shoe, denim and bag brands. Subculture takes a colourful turn with a look at what ‘The Fashion Rebels of Tshwane’ have to offer and we tell you about all the cool spots to visit and eat at in Illovo and Parktown North. It’s a Passage to India in the Kulcha feature about Joburg’s community, and all about the best looking shopfronts in the Décor article. Leila Saffarian and Graeme Wyllie take on classic food dishes with a cheeky twist – you’re in for some delicious recipes. It’s a mix of cultures in International Travel, from the modern desert city of Abu Dhabi to the bright city of Tokyo in Japan. Then, locally, we give you some of the best festivals to attend around the country and where to stay while you’re there. As always, JList offers a comprehensive guide of what to do and where to go in the city. Try one (or all) of the best ice cream and froyo spots, Mexican restaurants, where to get the

best craft beer and burgers, and what to do with the kids during the long holidays. Don’t forget the three-day itinerary of some out-of-the-box things to do in greater Gauteng. So, until next year, have an amazing holiday. Come back rested and ready for an even busier 2016. I know we have some surprises up our sleeves. Stay safe.

Cover Profile

t’s lunchtime at a vibey restaurant in Parkhurst and I notice the heads turn as she walks in. She’s just flown in from somewhere exotic, but is already heading to Zurich later that evening to shoot a chocolate commercial. She orders chai and, as I admire the Audemars Piguet she wears with such ease that it could be a Timex, we get down to business.

FLIRTING with FAME She’s been in the limelight since age 15. She poses with adoring fans in the middle of the street because it makes them happy. Only a handful, if that, of the millions of girls who try to conquer the film and entertainment industry make it all the way to the top. Eric Bornman sat down with Tarina Patel to chat about what it’s like to be famous, playing the game to get ahead and how far she would go to become the biggest star on the planet

JOBURG STYLE What does it mean to be famous? TARINA PATEL The whole phenomenon of fame; it’s so transitional. Before, in order to be famous you’d have to have done something profound. Not anymore. Fame has taken on a more liberal manifestation, a more shallow meaning. There are so many platforms for people to be famous and it may be 15 seconds, an hour or a year, even that’s transitional. Kim Kardashian. What is she famous for? Famous for being famous. When I’d just arrived in India, before I got into films, I was doing commercials. I was so easy-going and people loved that I was South African; the country fascinated them. I networked well, made solid friendships, my confidence grew and I learnt my strengths. I was getting paid, travelling the world, and at one point you couldn’t turn on the TV without seeing me in a commercial. That was huge. When I went back to India after some time, the industry players remembered me, but the masses didn’t, and it’s the masses that matter. At what point do you become a Robert de Niro or Meryl Streep? Who gets to that point? Would you consider yourself famous? It’s not even a consideration. It’s a fact. Just below 80 percent of our country watches me play Karishma every day on Generations. Everywhere I go people scream my name and run up to me asking for photos. On my flight the other day the air hostess announced I was on the plane and they all wanted to take photos with me. I play a character everybody’s in love with. All the girls want to look like her, all the men want to date her. They may not know my name, but they certainly know Karishma’s name. Don’t you get tired of having to be ‘on’ every single minute of every single day? I literally have no choice, but to be ‘on’ all the time. I get recognised wherever I go, all day every day. And it’s rewarding. I mean what does it take out of me? Nothing but a smile. People say that all it takes is two minutes, but what is the impact on that person’s life? I’ve made her happy, I’ve made all her family happy, so why not? I’m cognisant of that every single time. I handle it well because I basically grew up in this. I’ve been in the industry since I was 15. I finished matric when I was 15 and went straight to medical school. I finished masters in clinical psychology. When I was in India studying, I fell in love with the industry. I was at med school during the week and on weekends I’d shoot commercials all over the world. You have a degree in clinical psychology so you’re obviously not just a pretty face. How is that working out for you? I think it’s worked against me my whole life – not because I wear my brain on my sleeve – but because there’s no discounting the fact that I’m an educated girl,

www.joburgstyle.co.za | 21

Cover Profile you can’t put that aside. So when I go into meetings with directors to cast me for a film and they want a certain type of girl, I may look like that girl and pretend to be that girl, but I’m actually not. They are the power on that side and I’m the damsel in distress begging them for this opportunity, dying to work for them. It’s a patriarchal industry and these men want what they want from you. Whereas any other girl would accept what they say and perhaps give a nervous giggle, I can’t hold myself back. It’s much easier just to be a bimbette, a pretty face and nothing else. The minute you’re intelligent it intimidates the other side. They don’t want you for your brain, they want you for a month, or two, or three, on location and it will never ever be a once off thing. You’ve got to entertain them until you get the film and then carry on this little affair during the filming so you get everything on your terms, the best scenes. It doesn’t end there, there’s postproduction, and you want to make sure you’re not cut out of the best scenes. Then there’s publicity and you want to be a pivotal part and attend global premieres. It doesn’t end just with the director either. I realised that I couldn’t change the fact that I was a little smarter or that I’d grown up with a certain set of morals and principles that were already – by the time I got to India – firmly entrenched in who I was and I couldn’t change that. So how am I going to go

To have to sit across a table from a man who you actually want to GET UP AND UPPERCUT, is the most FRUSTRATING THING ever all the way with these people if I haven’t entered that realm of relationship? You try and you go as far as you can and then there comes a point where you know these guys have been doing this since before you were born – how can you compete? How can you play with them? They’re playing with you. They eat you up. You’re competing with girls who are street smart, who’ve been in the industry since they were two. There are people who would sell their souls to be famous, but never will. Some are born into it and know nothing else. What would you do to become the biggest star on the planet? How far would you go? By becoming a producer I’ve already put the necessary transition into place. As an actor you’re at the mercy of everyone else. Being a producer is powerful because you can write roles for yourself. That’s the smartest way to do it, to empower yourself. There I was in India at the mercy of everyone else. They could say whatever they wanted, try whatever they wanted, and there was nothing I could do. It was very debilitating for me. It’s very unnerving. I fancy myself as a very strong individual but, to have to sit across a table from a man who you actually want to get up and uppercut is the most frustrating thing ever. The only way I can continue to do what I love doing is to empower myself and make my own films. The prominence of someone already mentioned here was boosted when a sex tape featuring her ‘made its way’ into the public domain. Isn’t that the easier way to go about becoming famous? It is, but I think keeping with my ethos from a very young age, I’ve always been in it for the long haul. I loved everything that came with it – one big happy 22 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

family. I told myself I needed to do this right in a way that was respectable. I don’t want to be talked about like that. Over time I can conquer all – gain and earn respect. At the end, respect and friendship prevail. Did you ever consider sleeping your way to the top? Of course, but I wasn’t good at it so I chose not to. I chose to be me. I didn’t want to be the kind of person you talk about behind their back; I wanted my reputation intact. There did come a time when I said to myself, ‘I’m going to have to play ball.’ I tried – but when it came down to it, it just wasn’t that easy. You have to see what these guys look like [laughs]. But what if you were guaranteed an Oscar-winning role? Then, oh my gosh yeah! Of course I’d go for it. Are you kidding me? And if I was attracted to the person, he was a great guy, we have a good time, then yes, why not? When will you be able to say, “now I’ve made it?” I don’t think it’s something that would happen to me now. It’s about doing amazing films that may or may not get recognised now, or in five years’ time. It’s about me as an individual and my body of work. It’s about personal goals. I’m going to Los Angeles in January. They’re making great stuff there. If I’m offered a really great show with great actors and writers, but a big network hasn’t bought it yet, or I’m offered a show where the acting is bad and the writing poor and yet is an overnight explosion – which one would I go for? The one with good content. It’s how I’ve understood to graft my career. What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken? Going to India. I couldn’t speak a word of Hindi, but I chose to stay there and learn a new language just so I could work there. It’s paid off I think. I don’t want to sit and regret, it’s not in my nature. But do you have any regrets? I think I could’ve done more with my time in India. It was a big sacrifice being away from my family and living alone in a foreign land. I’ve done well and everyone is proud of me. But I don’t look at all the successes; I look at all the opportunities that were proposed to me. I look at my friends and peers who went a lot further than me because they were willing to play the game. That’s what I would have tweaked. I wish I could have been more ruthless, and that’s a regret within myself. What are you most proud of? Here’s a girl who grew up in Durban, raised in a very strong academic home, just a little girl with big dreams. I had the guts to pack my bags to India at a young age and made it on my own terms. When do you feel most satisfied? When I’m with my family. We spend a lot of time together and they’re always my most precious moments. I love that they’re proud of me, they celebrate my success. I think the Indian community is so proud of me because I’ve never really had a stink around me ever. My life is so clean. There’s never been a rumour about me. My reputation is immaculate. How do you maintain fame? And stay relevant? Continue to work and you’ll stay famous. Inevitably it will get out there. You want to stay relevant, then stay working. It’s either destined for you or it’s not. You’re doing everything you have to. If it’s meant for you, it will happen. Just submit. If I were a doctor I’d be on a guaranteed path. You’re never guaranteed anything in entertainment. I never imagined how hard it would be.

It was only fitting, for our Best Of issue, that we showcase the many colourful faces of Joburg. It’s the people who make this city so special and Anthony Bila captured them perfectly

Photo Essay

This series was inspired by the streets of

Johannesburg; Newtown to be specific. I walked the streets of the area and anyone I came into contact with, who was willing to be photographed, I did. I wanted to, as accurately as possible, reflect that part of the city, and showcase the South Africa I see on a daily basis, and its people. The series was exhibited in Jeppestown, otherwise known as Maboneng. My ultimate goal as a photographer, and with any other work I create, is simple: to bring Africa to the world and the world to Africa by showing it outside of the stale and trite lenses of Western media. Yes, hardships, poverty and crime exist, as they do in any country in the world, but we’re changing that narrative and who better to tell our stories, than us Africans. www.anthonybila.com www.joburgstyle.co.za | 27

With #feesmustfall throwing a spotlight on South Africa’s education system, the question of where to send your kids to school is more pertinent than ever Words Lisa Witepski E’VE ROUNDED UP SOME OF THE TOP INSTITUTIONS IN THE CITY TO HELP ENSURE YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOLING IS MORE ‘SPUD’ THAN DUD.

PREP SCHOOLS The Ridge

When it opened in 1919, The Ridge had just 13 learners. The student body now stands at 490, but the school’s ethos remains the same: To provide a space for boy-centred education, with a firm emphasis on balance. With only 20 learners in each class, and just three classes in each grade, personal attention is assured at this school. It further differentiates itself through its emphasis on encouraging the development of ‘thinkers’: Former headmaster Grant Nupen incorporated the thinking philosophy of Edward de Bono, the author of The Six Thinking Hats, into the curriculum, and this remains a strong influence on The Ridge’s teaching methodologies.

SIGNATURE OFFERING Although a range of sports, including less common codes like climbing and kayaking, are on offer, The Ridge prides itself on an equally strong cultural programme – 70 percent of learners participate in its music and performing arts programme.

Big Read

Crawford Lonehill

CrawfordSchools™ has built an extremely strong brand in just 20 years. While academics are considered a top priority, the school also offers a comprehensive sports programme. Choices include less traditional options like horse riding, golf and a climbing wall. At the heart of the curriculum is the Crawford goal: Teaching children to think for themselves whilst contributing to their communities. As a further plus, the school also has pre-primary and senior campuses.

SIGNATURE OFFERING Sports facilities include a training pool and climbing wall.

SENIOR SCHOOLS St Stithians College

St Stithians’ magnificent Bryanston grounds house seven schools in total: In addition to the girls’ and boys’ senior schools, there’s a coeducational junior primary and girls’ and boys’ primary campuses, too. The St Stithians brand further encompasses the Kamoka Bush School (located in Modimolle), as well as the Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy. The diversity of these schools is fitting for a school that strives to be a contributor to transformation in South Africa; an ethos 30 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

underscored by its motto: One and All.

SIGNATURE OFFERING The school’s impressive sports facilities range from two hockey AstroTurfs to a diving pool.

Kingsmead College

At Kingsmead, the goal is to provide girls with the tool to lead truly happy lives. Linked to this is the school’s practice of embracing responsibility and service. The Academic Programme is tailored to the needs of each girl. The school consistently produces results among the best in the country in the IEB (Independent Examinations Board) NSC (National Senior Certificate) examinations. Sport participation is encouraged to promote a positive attitude to a healthy lifestyle.

SIGNATURE OFFERING Kingsmead College has an active and

progressive Arts Department, which provides a variety of activities in which the girls can participate. .

King Edward School

Gary Player, Joe van Niekerk, Graeme Smith and Bryan Habana all share something in common besides excellent abilities on the sports

SIGNATURE OFFERINGS Sports facilities include indoor cricket nets and a fully equipped gym.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS

Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg

Having recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, the German School is the oldest co-ed school in Johannesburg. More than 30 nationalities are represented at the school. This diversity was boosted by the establishment of the New Secondary School (NSek) in 1989, allowing children from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to benefit from a private school education thanks to bursaries. The German School’s accent is on academics, with its curriculum informed by ‘Cultural Encounter’, a philosophy which enables Germans and non-German speakers alike to experience the country’s culture and language.

TEACHING CHILDREN TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES WHILST CONTRIBUTING TO THEIR COMMUNITIES SIGNATURE OFFERING In addition to studying

towards a South African matric, learners can also obtain a German Abitur qualification.

British International College

British International College (BIC’s) Bryanston school is one of three campuses. There are no more than 250 learners at each school, and the personalised attention brings out students’ best. Since the Cambridge International Examinations Outstanding Learner Awards were introduced in 2007, South African BIC learners have shone.

Passage to India SOUTH AFRICAN INDIANS ARE VARIED, BRINGING THEIR OWN BRANDS OF FOOD, FAMILY AND FASHION TO JOBURG’S CBD, SOUTHERN AND NORTHERN SUBURBS WORDS ANESHREE NAIDOO

ongezi’s favourite is Ghazal, Penny Murray’s kids love samoosas from Chamdor and Samantha’s pick is The Curry Leaf in Bucchleuch. Zaheer loves Sandton’s air-conditioned halaal eateries and Preshanie digs Taste of Punjab in Parkview. There’s not really anywhere you can’t find Indian food in Joburg – the city’s homely restaurants, mom-and-pop takeaways and upmarket eateries serve up everything from haute cuisine to homemade fare. Think South Indian, Indo-Asian and Kerala cuisine at Thava Midrand, craft beer paired with Red Chilli Spice’s North Indian offerings and the ubiquitous bunny chow at your local. The food mirrors the people – Christian, Hindu, Muslim, South and North Indian, almost all of whose ancestors arrived from India in two waves. Indians came to the Cape as slaves in the 1600s. By the time the second wave of indentured labourers and free Indians had arrived in the 1800s, those first arrivals had integrated with the

Coloured residents of the colony, leaving the official history of people from the sub-continent to begin in 1860. One hundred and fifty years later, some 1.1 million South African Indians practise diaspora versions of their differing religions and cultures. While Joburg’s Lenasia and Fordsburg are most recognisable as the city’s ‘Indian areas,’ a change of times brought many Indians from KwaZuluNatal, banking on the City of Gold’s job opportunities.

Think runway designers such as Satya Paul and Manish Malhotra, who keep the diaspora in bangles, bindis, and bridal wear. Shopping online isn’t unusual, especially as sarees are one size fits all. But a normal day for the average South African Indian doesn’t include struggling into a saree, donning a Swarovski-starred lengha or wearing a kurta to the office. These come out on special occasions, while simpler versions are worn for a trip to the mosque or temple. Zaheer, a writer in his 30s, wears his kurta to mosque every Friday, and for Eid celebrations. Preshani, a Montessori principal, brings out her everyday Punjabi on a Friday, while Samantha, a 37-yearold PR executive, last dressed up in August 2015. Usually though,

FAMILY IS THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND WHEN THINKING INDIAN CULTURE. WITH FAMILY COMES FOOD, PRAYER, WEDDINGS, FASHION AND RELIGION

FAMILY, FOOD AND FASHION Family is the first thing that comes to mind when Penny and Mongezi think Indian culture. With family comes food, prayer, weddings, fashion and religion. For many, Indian means Hindu. The population is made up of mostly Hindus, then Christians, Muslims and the rare Sikh. Christian practice ranges from Catholicism to charismatic Christianity, Muslims can be Sunni or Shi’ite and Hinduism encompasses North and South Indian versions, themselves further split by smaller regional differences. Each group – Tamil, Gujarati, Hindi (among others) – brings its own flavour to festivals, prayers and weddings, none of which can be pulled off without those famed families, some of which now include interacial spouses. With a wedding, like a festival, comes the opportunity to turn out in traditional finery. Historically, KwaZulu-Natal offers a range of outlets, so many émigrés make the journey back to KZN to do their wedding shopping. Native Joburgers visit Fordsburg’s Oriental Plaza or Lenasia’s Trade Route Mall, where family-

Kulcha it’s a shirt and tie, or a name brand suit, as younger Indians in Joburg are no longer an unfamiliar sight at major corporates. Another change for Indians now working in Joburg is with family. ‘Home’ is KwaZuluNatal, and Indians from Joburg swell the ranks of those taking the annual South African end of year pilgrimage to the coast. It’s a time to reconnect with parents and grandparents, to introduce new babies to their aunts and uncles, and enjoy the kind of food neither the upmarket restaurants nor average café serve: tripe and gram dhal, trotters and sheep’s head, ahkni, tin fish samoosas. As members of the population grow older and start families of their own, KZN businesses have found a new market. The Nagiah’s franchise stocks mutton, chicken and offal, but beef and pork are off the menu. Now new Indians in the Highveld are consulting their copies of their beloved book Indian Delights (available at the Oriental Plaza) to get up to speed. A sense of alienation still haunts many newcomers and singletons though. Samantha, far from her family, rarely celebrates Diwali, while Preshanie’s work often keeps her too busy to cook. She also misses familiar faces. Zaheer, despite being a Joburg native, feels

the city’s Western corporate culture is at odds with those of Black and Indian South Africans. He isn’t familiar with KZN Indian culture either. He’s found love in Oman. Preshanie’s children are growing up in the ‘big smoke’, and that next generation will most definitely adapt, just like the ones before, and those before them. But there will always be an aunty waiting in the wings, just in case. 42 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Leaders In just a few years, the Fashion Rebels have changed the face of the Gauteng fashion scene and have created a subculture popular name brands could only dream of. How are they doing this? By breaking the rules, of course

Subculture

of fashion

"W

E'RE LOUD AND PROUD”, says Maitele Wawe, founder of the Fashion Rebels and The Social Market in Pretoria. The Fashion Rebels started in 2012 with two members – Maitele and partner Thifhe Mudau. Sizo Dlezi joined them later, completing the formidable trio they are today. “Our name was inspired by our style, which, being very difficult to explain or understand by society, felt like a rebellion against what’s considered ‘normal’ in the fashion industry,” explains Sizo. They’re breaking boundaries in the fashion scene, so the name couldn’t be a more perfect fit. “We were simply a team of creatives who loved and strived for very alternative fashion looks. It wasn’t necessarily our intention to come out as a public fashion trio, but people noticed something unique, and although many didn’t understand it, those who did were drawn to us because we were bold enough to express our creativity with the way we looked,” Sizo adds. Then came The Social Market. Launched in 2014, it has grown and developed at a fast pace. “The Social Market is a creative hub where we provide a platform for young and upcoming talent in and around Pretoria. The focus is on four elements: fashion, food, art and music. As fashion rebels and people who appreciate the arts, we decided to start a market where like-minded people are given a chance to exhibit their work and make money while doing it, and also to create a space where people can come together, network and collaborate with one another. Since its launch, The Social Market has moved around in the city, from Mushroom Lounge in Central to

Hatfield Plaza. We’re currently at 012 Central. The Social Market is held on the first Sunday of every month from 11am to 5pm,” says Thifhe. “Many youngsters were inspired by the way we looked and our confidence. We create a lot of hype by posting pictures of ourselves and the market on social media, and create different looks and trends to follow,” says Maitele with a grin. And people followed. “It came down to trusting the vision and goal we had and the subculture waiting for us to nourish,” he adds. The Fashion Rebels never expected to create the huge hype they have. “Initially, we anticipated a bit of a following, but definitely not so much and not at the rate it’s happening. What we predicted might take five years to accomplish took much less than that. It still blows our minds how well we are being received by the public,” says Sizo. The key things that make up the Fashion Rebels include, but are not limited to, their individuality, pride, belief in what they do, and their originality and setting new trends in a creative way. When they’re not turning heads (actually, no wait they’re always turning heads), the trio are students and employees, so their weekdays are filled with a different kind of work. We have to ask: Where does this inspirational trio’s inspiration come from? “First and foremost at home, and right in the centre of it all, from each other,” says Maitele. What makes them so influential? They’re fashionable and still appreciate the history and art of fashion without conforming to the rules. As Maitele says, “The sky’s the limit and the only way from here is up.” For more pictures, visit

Those staples are great and are here to stay, but every now and then they deserve a little makeover, where tweaking just one or two ingredients turns an ordinary dish into an extraordinary one

SPAGHETTI AND LAMB MEATBALLS Serves 4

Spaghetti and meatballs is a classic dish, loved by young and old. Instead of the usual beef mince, we opted for lamb mince, along with a few extra ingredients for maximum flavour impact. Flavour impact – we love that. Ingredients For the meatballs: 500g lamb mince 1 small red onion, grated A few sprigs fresh rosemary, finely chopped 4 tbsp (60ml) grated Parmesan cheese Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp (15ml) olive oil For the spaghetti sauce: 2 tbsp (30ml) olive oil 1 red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ tsp (2.5ml) dried chilli flakes 2 tins chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp (15ml) tomato paste ½ cup (125ml) vegetable stock 1 tsp (5ml) sugar Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 500g cooked spaghetti, to serve Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, to serve Method 1. For the meatballs, combine the mince, onion, rosemary and Parmesan cheese in a large bowl. Season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. Mix well and shape into golf ball-sized balls. Place on a lined baking tray and brush with olive oil. Bake in a preheated 200˚C oven for 15 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Set aside. 3. For the sauce, heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion and fry for 2 minutes until softened, followed by the garlic and chilli flakes. Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, vegetable stock, sugar and season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Bring to the boil, then lower to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes until reduced and thickened. 5. Add the meatballs to the sauce and coat well. 6. Serve the sauce and meatballs with cooked spaghetti and plenty of Parmesan cheese.

ZESTY ROAST CHICKEN

Ground sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Nothing beats the simple perfection of a good roast chicken. Instead of the usual seasoning of just fresh lemon juice, we added a good glug of Verjuice – the result was something of a 10/10.

Method 1. Start by placing the chicken in a large roasting dish. Truss the legs with butcher’s string. 2. Drizzle with olive oil, add the garlic, lime juice, fresh thyme, Verjuice and white wine. 3. Season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Place in a preheated 200˚C oven and roast for 15 minutes, then lower the temperature and roast for a further 45 minutes, or until the chicken is golden and cooked through.

Serves 4-6

Ingredients 1 whole free-range chicken 2 tbsp (30ml) olive oil 3 large garlic cloves, roughly chopped Juice of 1 lime 8-10 sprigs of fresh thyme 4 tbsp (60ml) Verjuice 100ml white wine

SMOKED SNOEK PÂTÉ Serves 4-6

Time

A good chicken liver pâté is always a hit, but it has been done, over and over again. Smoked snoek is the perfect summer alternative, a little lighter, a little fresher with a hint of smokiness.

15 mins

Ingredients 450g smoked snoek 2 tubs plain cream cheese 4 tbsp (60ml) cream Juice of half a small lemon 2 tbsp (30ml) chives, chopped Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Crackers, to serve Chives, to serve Method 1. Remove any bones from the smoked snoek and place in a food processor. 2. Then add the cream cheese, cream, lemon juice and chives. 3. Season lightly with salt and a good grinding of black pepper. Blitz until the ingredients are well incorporated and the pâté smooth. 4. Adjust seasoning. If the pâté is too thick, add a few extra splashes of cream. Spoon into ramekins, cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. 5. Serve with extra fresh chives and plenty of crackers. * 2 hours chill time

ROSE WATER & STRAWBERRY CRUMBLE Serves 4

Everyone loves a good crumble. The apple and plum variety can get a little boring though. That’s why we went for the deconstructed variety. Ingredients For the strawberry filling: 400g strawberries, washed, hulled and halved 4 tbsp (60ml) sugar 1 tbsp (15ml) rose water For the crumble: 120g cake flour 120g cold butter, cubed 100g sugar Custard, to serve Method 1. For the filling, place the 64 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

strawberries, sugar and rose water in a medium saucepan over a medium-high heat. 2. Cook until the sugar has dissolved, the strawberries have softened and a sticky, reduced sauce appears (about 10 minutes). Remove from the heat and set aside. 3. For the crumble, place the flour and cold butter cubes in a bowl. Rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and mix well. 4. Place the crumble mixture on a lined baking tray and bake in a preheated 180˚C oven for 20-25 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown (you will need to give the mixture a good stir every 6 minutes). To serve, spoon the strawberries into a serving dish and top with the crumble mixture just before serving. Serve with lashings of custard.

Time

Quick tip

This can be turned into a pie filling. Double the quantity and use a store bought short crust pastry.

I'M A CELEBRITY… GET ME A

Ever wondered what George Clooney likes to drink when he’s not being served champagne on a silver platter (besides Nespresso)? It happens, rarely, but it does happen. Or how about local actress Jay Anstey? Lifestyles of the rich and the famous… drink up!

JOHNNY DEPP & HIS SIGNATURE BOURBON SOUR

W hile there are some obvious choices when you think of drinks of the rich and famous, for example, everyone knows a single malt Scotch is the go-to choice for those with distinguished tastes, however, you may be surprised by the reality of how, what (and sometimes where) celebrities drink. James Bond might be famous for having his martini shaken, not stirred, but shaking gin (the only liquor for any real martini lover, not vodka) actually bruises it. Many say martinis should always be stirred. Here are some of our favourite celebs’ favourite beverages. How much do George Clooney and Rande Gerber enjoy tequila? Enough that they spent more than five years working with a master distiller in Mexico before launching Casamigos, their own premium tequila, in 2012. Today, there are three varieties within the Casamigos portfolio – a blanco, an añejo and a reposado – all of which George and Rande like best on the rocks. The ever mysterious and swoon worthy Johnny Depp loves a bourbon sour to help him wind down. And, although it’s been a while since Sting’s young, carefree rocker days, one thing lingers: Jack on the rocks. Rapper Jay Z clearly has

flawless taste, so it’s no surprise that he’s listed Armand de Brignac Champagne as his favourite drink to imbibe. As for Beyonce, she’s also gone on record saying she adores the drink, but has a penchant for margaritas too. The famous-for-being-famous reality star Kim Kardashian says she rarely drinks, but when she’s craving a cocktail she’s known to enjoy a White Russian. However, most of Kim’s public outings these days don’t involve much alcohol. Poor Simon Cowell has food allergies, so Sapporo beer is one of the few he can enjoy as it’s yeast free. Contrary to popular belief, Butterbeer isn’t Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s signature drink. She prefers her cocktails traditional, sticking with a G&T when the pub calls. The pop artist who made Campbell’s Soup famous, Andy Warhol, was a frequent patron of Studio 54, where he could be found drinking Dom Pérignon. He once ran into members of the elusive ‘2000 club’ – a group of men who had purchased 2,000 bottles of the expensive bubbly and sealed them away in preparation for a massive New Year’s Eve party on the night before the new millennium. What is the ex-queen of talk’s tipple? Oprah is a fan of martinis that are a little sweeter,

JAY ANSTEY LIKES NOTHING MORE THAN A JAMESON WHISKY ON THE ROCKS WITH A DASH OF LIME

JAMES BOND & HIS FAMOUS SHAKEN NOT STIRRED MARTINI

citing lemon drops or pomegranate martinis as her most palatable options. Jennifer Aniston has happily declared a margarita as her favourite cocktail – a little sweet, a little sour and with plenty of kick. Daughter of rock legend Steve Tyler, Liv, likes her drinks pink. You guessed it: the perfectly pink strawberry daiquiri. Even the Queen likes a toot every now and then. Her go-to? A gin and Dubonnet – served with a slice of lemon, two ice cubes and every last pip taken out. She revealed her favourite cocktail in a documentary, touting the delectable taste of a sweet aperitif – sending orders of the drink in the UK soaring. Never has there been a more unlikely Bud Light drinker than the president of the United States, Barack Obama himself. Rules are meant to be broken, right? Local actresses Jay Anstey and Stevie French like Jameson on the rocks with a dash of lime and frozen margaritas respectively. Top Billing presenter Roxy Burger loves a Pimm’s and lemonade on a hot summer’s day. “Nothing beats sharing a Pimm’s jug with mates on the deck at Topo Gigio in Greenside.” Celeb stylist and beauty and fashion consultant Francois Louw likes nothing more than a chilled glass of Moët & Chandon. “Not only is it refreshing, but anything with bubbles is so inspiring to watch. It’s been around for over 150 years, so it must be good.” 70 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

Located just 30 minutes’ drive from Abu Dhabi, this island is home to the worldfamous Yas Marina Circuit, which hosts the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the season that takes place at the end of November each year. Yas Island also boasts stunning Yas Marina, with its excellent yacht club, as well as the Yas Links Abu Dhabi Golf Course, Ferrari World, Yas Waterfront and seven hotels, including my choice of accommodation for your stay, the Yas Viceroy Hotel, the only hotel in the world that is located right on a Formula 1 racetrack! WHERE TO STAY YAS VICEROY HOTEL An integral part of the Yas Marina Circuit, this innovative five-star hotel is a city

landmark, the only hotel in the world to be located on a Formula 1 racetrack. Built half on and half off the water, the hotel, which is one of the most iconic hotels in the UAE and the first of the Viceroy group’s hotels in the Middle East, features 499 rooms and suites. The hotel boasts a plush hotel lounge with a magnificent viewing suite so that you can watch the Grand Prix race. WHAT TO VISIT FERRARI WORLD The huge Ferrari-themed amusement park boasts the fastest rollercoaster in the world, Formula Rossa, which accelerates up to an incredible 240km per hour. The island is also an academic destination, home to three international universities; there’s a New York University (NYU) campus, a campus for the Paris-Sorbonne University as well as Zayed University.

YAS MALL This gigantic shopping haven is home to a massive range of shops, from Calvin Klein to a Lego store, along with multiple restaurants and a cinema. YAS WATERWORLD This brand new waterpark is fast becoming a favourite, with its mix of gentle and highadrenaline attractions. The park spreads over 15 hectares and offers 43 rides, slides and attractions, from log flumes, tornado slides, water tunnels with special laser effects and terrifying drops into pools of water, to all sorts of other hi-tech splashy fun. As this stunning park is themed around the Emirati people’s traditional pearl fishing culture, guests get to learn all about the UAE’s heritage and culture. WHERE TO EAT CIPRIANI AT THE YAS YACHT CLUB A branch of the famous hotel where George Clooney got married last year, this stunning gourmet restaurant is a welcome addition to Abu Dhabi’s luxe offerings. Spoil yourself with dinner here; the level of service is as mindboggling as the food. YAS VICEROY HOTEL Don’t miss out on the hotel’s stunning, five-star, international-style buffet. Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi

WHERE TO STAY PARK HYATT ABU DHABI HOTEL AND VILLAS We stayed at the sumptuous Park Hyatt, which is located on the ocean with a choice of beautiful swimming pools. The hotel offers 306 rooms, suites and villas, each with a private terrace or balcony offering scenic views of Saadiyat Beach, the golf club or the hotel’s lush gardens. Enjoy excellent food at the various restaurants and pamper yourself at the luxury Atarmia Spa, which offers a variety of health and beauty treatments. Take a look at the Guggenheim, which is still under construction; it was designed by internationally famous architect Frank Gehry. Then head over to see the Zayed National Museum, which is due to open next year; its displays will tell the story of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who unified the UAE, as well as the region’s history and cultural connections with the rest of the world. An attraction in its own right, the island’s Visitor Centre brings the island’s vision to life with an interactive display of its history and the cultural vision behind it. Four-day itinerary Break up your trip and spend the first two days on Yas Island and the following two on Saadiyat.

CENTRAL MARKET This snazzy market replaced Abu Dhabi's old central souk after it was destroyed by fire. The modern complex offers a fabulous variety of gifts, trinkets and cafés. I picked up some stunning pashminas at Valley Crafts. Big up Japan Cultures collide and time speeds up, whilst at the same time, life goes on as it has done for centuries. Welcome to Japan, one of the most astonishing, extraordinary countries in the world

N

owhere in the world does modernity and antiquity shock quite as much as Japan. Here, geishas clad in striking kimonos enjoy 21st century nightlife, while Buddhist monks whizz around Tokyo on their motorbikes. Japan has pioneered technology, design, fashion and cuisine, and it’s evident everywhere, in the world’s fastest trains, ultramodern buildings, quirky fashion design and toilets that talk back to their users. And then there’s the ancient side of this magnificent country, home to castles crumbling with age, magnificent Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and extraordinary festivals. And the food – fresh sushi and sashimi, grilled meats with sizzling sauces, Bento boxes and stir-fries have become popular the world over, but they will never taste as good as they do in their home country. Etihad Airlines and Trafalgar Tours will fly you to this Eastern treasure after four glorious days exploring Abu Dhabi. The exciting nine-day Splendours of Japan Tour gives you a taste of what this extraordinary country is all about. Take a look at the Splendours of Japan itinerary below.

ituated between Cradock Avenue and Oxford Road, this mixed-use mall development comprises two levels of shops and restaurants, plus a hotel and parking garage. The Zone is a very popular entertainment hub, offering excellent shopping, restaurants and nightlife opportunities. The main centre of activity is the food court, which has recently been extensively refurbished to include a brand new 2,000 square metre indoor food emporium on the first floor called Food @ The Zone, due to open

The refurbishment also includes the opening of 16 new stores, making The Zone an even more exciting destination with more fashion, hair, beauty and shoe outlets. After renovations are complete, The Zone will also include a mixed-use retail/office area, called The Zone Boulevard, which will serve as a green space with outdoor seating and a piazza-style atmosphere.

Chateau Gateaux Patisserie

There’s something American about this patisserie, despite the offerings being authentically French. It’s the size of the portions and the grandeur of the offerings, which are so mouthwatering, they’re irresistible. Whether you’re after a croissant, bourekas, a slice of some of the best cake you’ll taste south of the equator or a dessert concoction that will keep you smiling, Chateau Gateaux has it, in spades. 011 268 2211

Turn ‘n Tender

Step back in time when you enter this popular steakhouse, which made a return a few years ago after a long sabbatical. Originally opened in the ‘80s by four brothers, Turn ‘n Tender is still run by the family, and offers a reminder of what a great steakhouse was like in the old days. Portions are huge, the steaks are superb (and yes, they are tender), and the salads and sides are to die for. Nostalgia reigns, but the quality is as good as it ever was, the variety on the menu is excellent and the restaurant is proof that you can’t reinvent the wheel. 011 268 2107

Thrupps Grocers

Since the late 19th Century, Thrupps has been offering Joburg residents quality groceries, bakery and deli products. Very little has changed. The store is still known as the only place in town to purchase a wide range of imported products of every description, from groceries to kitchenware. With a specialist butchery, fish department, chicken section, fresh produce area, bakery and a café, this grocery store literally offers everything you could possibly need. Thrupps was also the first grocery store to offer a delivery service. 011 268 0298

Art

Galleries HOME, JONATHAN HINDSON GALLERY MOMO

Until 15 January Jonathan Hindson, a South African-born, French-based artist currently in residence at Gallery MOMO, will be showcasing a body of new works in his exhibition titled ‘Home’. For the exhibition Hindson explains that the artworks he’s created “refer to some aspect of a place I could, or would like to, or wish to, call ‘home’ – be it a country, a family or a social context.” Jonathan uses his perception of various situations influenced by memories that define him as a person. “What I call reality is the result of this influence. There can be no such thing as one single truth.” The philosophical influences of Jacques Derrida, specifically his philosophy on ‘deconstruction’, Friedrich Nietzsche, Albert Camus, Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger play a pivotal role in his decision-making when creating. www.gallerymomo.com

He calls on metaphorical visual tropes, such as a baby’s milk bottle and a pacifier, to draw connections between natural and constructed systems of social dependence. PERRON

Two South Africans created one of Joburg’s most popular Mexican eateries, Perron, by sampling the best of London’s Mexican fare, and with the help of two Mexican businessmen. The result is a flavoursome Mexican eatery in Illovo with traditional dishes, flavour, and a menu that’s as good to read as it is to eat. The owners love Mexican food. They love tequila. And they love their patrons. So join the crowd next time you’re in the neighbourhood. You won’t be disappointed. www.perron.co.za

Casual Mexican fare at its best, either to take out or eat on the premises. Food is fresh, great tasting and more-ish, with a fabulous choice of everything Mex, from burritos and fajitas to tacos and quesadillas. Available in vegetarian or with beef, chicken or prawns. Not so spicy, so it’s popular with the less adventurous – of course, chilli can be added to give it an authentic bite. Two great venues: Riverview Centre in Blairgowrie or Epsom Downs Shopping Centre, Bryanston. www.mexicanfresh.co.za

The Last Word

MINUTES WITH TRUMPS

Julia Rice chatted to Trumps Grillhouse & Butchery brothers Dennis, Allen and Michael Martin about their restaurant vision, what they’ve achieved so far and the recent all-round Trumps makeover

HAVING BEEN AROUND SINCE 1994, WE’VE BECOME A FAVOURITE IN AND AROUND THE SANDTON AREA. We’ve hosted many local and international

guests and you may even spot both local and international celebrities, too. Trumps is the number one seller of Karan Beef in Joburg and all our beef is aged on the premises in a cold room for 21 days.

AFFORDABILITY, CONSISTENCY, EXCELLENT SERVICE AND OUTSTANDING MEALS. We pride

ourselves on being able to create the highest quality meals, at affordable prices. The menu is extensive and has taken years to develop.

THE FOOD WE SERVE IS TOP-NOTCH. At Trumps,

it’s all about the meat. A variety of steaks, including fillet, rump, sirloin and prime ribs, are a must for meat lovers. Our famous BBQ Ribs are a long-standing favourite. We also offer a variety of seafood and chicken dishes to suit every customer’s liking.

WE HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE WINE MENU TO CATER FOR ALL TASTES. Our passion to bring new and

exciting dishes and wine to the world has driven us to source many different fine wines from around the globe. Our newly built cellar offers a host of local and international wines.

OUR SIGNATURE DISH IS THE 600G SIRLOIN ON THE BONE. This delicious cut of meat is served with a wild

mushroom and truffle butter sauce with a side of Trumps famous chips. 164 | www.joburgstyle.co.za

THE MAKEOVER WAS DONE TO UPDATE AND UPGRADE OUR STATUS AS THE ORIGINAL AND BEST. As our target market has evolved, so have we. Change is for the

better. We’ve taken our original menu and elevated it to a new status. We now offer new and improved meals based on our original recipes. As the demand for new and exciting dishes has increased, so has our awareness of this, motivating us to bring in new food. Meat on the bone is one of these. We offer cuts newly introduced to South Africa, like sirloin on the bone, prime rib and one that isn’t served on the bone, but is very popular overseas, ribeye steak. Both the physical and menu makeover were done to attract a more exclusive and upmarket customer base.

OUR BUTCHERY IS NEWLY LAUNCHED. It gives people the opportunity to view the highest quality meat (before it’s cooked), making them aware they’re still being served the same A-grade beef, lamb and pork we’ve been serving for years. Our butcher has over 30 years’ experience in the industry and makes the best biltong – Trumps signature biltong. OUR CUSTOMERS ARE RAVING ABOUT OUR LOOK AND FOOD. The old-fashioned, comfy vibe can still be

felt, but we’ve tried to integrate that same feeling with fresh, up-todate and trendy furnishes and finishes. As our customers' likes and needs change, so we should, too. We’ll continue to grow and evolve, and will always offer our best in terms of service and food quality. There’s no stopping us. This is a cut-throat industry, you do whatever it takes to be the best.
