MESSING AROUND WITH SCIENCE

IGNITING CURIOSITY

AT PENSACOLA MESS HALL

The Pensacola MESS Hall is celebrating 13 years of bringing science, curiosity and exploration to the streets of downtown Pensacola. The area’s only hands-on science museum opened in 2012 with the mission of inspiring curiosity, experimentation and creative problem-solving through the exploration of math, engineering, science and stuff (MESS). The museum itself was a bit of an experiment, starting as a trial run during summer break and eventually raising enough capital for a permanent downtown location.

“We started in 2012 and have been growing ever since,” Founder and Executive Director Megan Pratt said.

“We did it like a science experiment—

started small and scaled up. We try new things. We add something new every year.”

Inside the museum, guests are invited to engage with open-ended exhibits like the marble run, where pegboards and ramps are used to make pathways for marbles so kids and families can experiment with speed, gravity and problem-solving.

Beyond the main exhibits, visitors can order up a Mess Kit, served in takeout food containers on cafeteria trays. These kits are smaller experiments that contain step-by-step instructions as well as open-ended options for further exploration.

While the physical museum serves as the main attraction for many science seekers, the museum actually does more work outside

of the museum with its outreach programs. In fact, Pratt said the museum now reaches three times as many people through outreach programs as it does onsite.

“We're not just a science museum. We're a community science resource,” Pratt said. “We do outreach to schools, summer camps and community events. We want people who might not think of themselves as museum or science people to realize that science is for them, too.”

Thanks to a grant from the local philanthropic group, IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area, the MESS Hall now has a dedicated van for staff to bring their science experiences to local schools, community centers and various outreach events throughout the year.

In addition to school and camp visits, they host a weekly program funded by the Escambia Children’s Trust. Staff members visit the same community centers and schools each week, bringing experiments and lessons designed to engage students and enhance their existing science education.

The MESS Hall also hosts Family Science Nights at schools, where stations are set up in gyms and cafeterias for families to try experiments together. These events often rely on volunteers—sometimes school staff, sometimes partners like Navy Federal or the Society of American Military Engineers.

In an effort to reach as much of the community as possible, MESS Hall staff set up booths and experiments at dozens of large community events such as Earth Day, Gallery Night and WSRE’s Be My Neighbor Day.

To keep kids engaged during the summer, the MESS Hall offers thematic weeklong hands-on science summer camps for kids in grades first through sixth. Designed to ignite scientific curiosity and exploration, camp themes include Science Sampler, Games Unplugged, LEGO Builders, Blast Off, Wild World and Creative Coding.

“The summer camps are a lot of fun because you dive a little deeper into a topic and we can spend the time to facilitate that exploration, so it's a little bit more in-depth,” Pratt said.

In addition to their kid and family programs, the MESS Hall is also working on growing their adult engage-

ment with a variety of programs designed to engage adults in science discovery. Adult programs include social evenings with hands-on science activities, interactive forums and special lectures.

“Most people do not have children in the home. Either you haven't yet had them, you're never gonna have them, or they've grown up. Our target audience of kids and families is small, so one of our goals is to build science literacy and grow as a part of the community across all ages,” Pratt said. “We're trying to be present in the community because adults have a lot they can learn too. Having that time to be creative, to think and to build your curiosity is good for you as a person, and it can also be good for our community because it helps build connections with different people."

Recent adult programming events included a precipitation workshop, a singles science night and a culinary-focused Pi Day celebration. Upcoming events include a nature-focused game night on June 19.

The MESS Hall offers a variety of ways for visitors to support their mission. While visitors and admission fees are an important component of keeping the museum and its programs running, the MESS Hall also offers annual memberships, opportunities for much-appreciated donations, fundraising events and volunteer opportunities.

GET READY FOR STORM SEASON WITH FPL’S HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS CHECKLIST

At Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), safety is the cornerstone of our commitment to customers and employees. It is not a matter of if, but when the next hurricane will hit our state, which is why it’s important to be proactive in planning for the six-monthlong hurricane season. FPL urges Floridians to be prepared for this storm season and to be aware of potential safety hazards at all times. Below is a checklist of important details to consider before, during and after a storm. For more tips, visit FPL.com/storm. Create an emergency plan with your family

• Determine if your home or business is in a flood and/or evacuation zone and review evacuation routes.

• Determine your backup power source or make arrangements to relocate if a storm warning is issued.

• Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, including pool equipment.

• If your roof or windows leak, water in your walls and ceiling may come into contact with electrical wiring. Immediately turn off your circuit breakers, disconnect all electrical appliances that are still plugged in and turn off all wall switches. Never stand in water while operating switches or unplugging any electrical device.

• Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings ahead of time to keep food fresh longer in the event of a power outage.

WEEKS

From 10 am to 6 pm, festival goers can explore a vibrant outdoor market of local vendors, food trucks and live entertainment across multiple genres, including Emerald Coast Okinawa Dancers, McGuire's Pipe Band, DJ Hale, Pensacola Poetry and more. The celebration will conclude with a special screening of bold and diverse short films at the #FilmsForTheCulture Film Fest at 8 pm. “We’re thrilled to celebrate five years of Gulf Coast Culture Fest," said Calvin Griffin, Festival Director. “We’re proud to continue uplifting diversity and community through this event, especially in a time when culture isn’t always seen as something to celebrate. We encourage everyone to come out with their lawn chairs to celebrate and be entertained at this year's festival.”

The Division of Emergency Management recommends keeping gas tanks at least half full during hurricane season. For electric vehicles, make sure to maintain a 50%-80% charge at all times.

#FilmsForTheCulture Film Fest, the evening portion of the festival, is an openair screening of bold, thought-provoking short films hosted in partnership with the Gulf Coast Short Film Fest, will take place at 8 pm. This segment celebrates eight short films that showcase storytelling through cinema and offers an additional opportunity for cultural reflection and connection. • Contact your local emergency management office if you or anyone you know has special needs, in case of evacuations. Apply for our Medically Essential Service if someone in your home is dependent on electric-powered, lifesustaining medical equipment.

Build an emergency kit

• Check radio, flashlights and batteries that can support you in case you experience a power outage during a storm.

• Have a phone charger, power banks and a car charger available.

• Gather supplies such as non-perishable food, disposable dinnerware and utensils, medications and prescriptions, personal hygiene supplies, baby supplies, pet food, trash bags, toilet paper and soaps and detergents.

• Collect important documents and put them in a waterproof container – including insurance policies, health cards, birth certificates, Social Security cards, a list of important phone numbers and medications and a copy of your FPL bill.

Prepare your home

• DO NOT attempt to trim any vegetation growing on or near any overhead power lines. Only hire specially trained lineclearing professionals to trim trees and other vegetation near power lines. Visit FPL.com/trees for more information on our tree trimming policies.

• Look up and note the location of power lines before you begin working on a ladder. Be sure that ladders or scaffolds are far enough away so that you – and the ends of the tools you're using – don't come within 10 feet of main or neighborhood power lines.

Stay safe and informed

• If you use a portable generator, read and follow all the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to set it up outside – not in your home or garage – and connect appliances directly to it. Do not wire your generator directly to your breaker or fuse box, because the power you generate may flow back into power lines and cause injuries. Bookmark FPL.com, download the FPL Mobile App and save 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243) to your cell phone to report and check the status of your restoration.

PENSACOLA BAY LIVING SHORELINE PROJECT UPDATE

Construction is underway on the Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project, with crews soon to begin dredging at Robinson Island as part of the large-scale living shoreline project in southwestern Pensacola Bay.

Work is expected to continue for the next several months in the southwestern portion of Robinson Island, also known as Robertson Island/Admiral’s Island/Sand Island. The work will include removing sand from Robinson Island and using it to renourish the southern shore of NAS Pensacola in the Sherman Inlet/Lake Frederic area. About the Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project

The Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project is a joint effort between Escambia County and NAS Pensacola to recover important coastal habitats in the southwestern portion of Pensacola Bay and strengthen coastal resilience in the surrounding community.

The project consists of a large-scale living shoreline to be constructed at approximately three miles of shoreline in southwestern Pensacola Bay. Project sites include White Island at the entrance to Bayou Grande, NAS Pensacola’s eastern shore near Magazine Point, and the Sherman Inlet/

Lake Frederic area at the southern shore of NAS Pensacola.

Living shorelines enhance coastal resilience and address erosion by providing longterm protection, reducing wave energy, and restoring vegetated shoreline habitats through strategic placement of plants, rock, and reefs. Living shorelines also stabilize sediment, improve water quality, and enhance habitats for oysters, fish, shrimp, crabs, birds, sea turtles, and other estuarine species.

The Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project is a multi-year, multi-stakeholder planning effort. It is funded through federal and state grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s National Coastal Resilience Fund and Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund, the U.S. Department of Defense – Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Resilient Florida Program, the RESTORE Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council, and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity's Defense Infrastructure Grant Program.

RESTORE MYIP AMENDMENT 4 PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD OPEN NOW

Escambia County has released its RESTORE Act Draft Multi-Year Implementation Plan Amendment 4 for a 45-day public comment period beginning Tuesday, May 13 until Friday, June 27. Visit MyEscambia. com/MYIP to view MYIP Amendment 4. Public comments will be accepted the following ways: Emailing restore@myescambia.com

• By mail: Attention: Ryan Kirby, Natural Resources Management Department, 221 Palafox Place, Pensacola, FL 32502 MYIP Amendment 4 proposes alterations of three projects and the addition of five new projects. The three alteration projects include:

• Perdido Key Gulf of Mexico Public Access

• Perdido Key Beach Public AccessProperty Acquisition and Construction

• South Navy Boulevard Improvements

• The five new projects include:

• Bob White Lane and Ziglar Road Water Quality and Drainage Improvements

• Ellyson Industrial Park Stormwater Design and Construction

• Galvez Landing Design Update and Construction

• Marine Dive Garden Palmetto Phase 2 and Palomar Water Quality and Drainage Improvements

Background In April 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded, killing 11 workers and leading to the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. As a result, the RESTORE Act was signed into law in 2012, directing 80% of administrative and civil penalties back to the impacted areas of the Gulf Coast through the Gulf Coast Restoration Trust Fund.

The U.S. Department of Treasury serves as the administrator of the RESTORE Act Direct Component, one of five funding

streams through the RESTORE Act. In Florida, RESTORE Direct Component projects are selected and implemented by the 23 Gulf Coast counties, contingent on compliance with the RESTORE Act and acceptance by the U.S. Department of Treasury.

To ensure projects are consistent with the RESTORE Act and obtain broad-based participation in the project selection process, Treasury requires submittal and acceptance of a Multi-Year Implementation Plan. The U.S. Department of Treasury approved Escambia County’s Initial MYIP on Oct. 20, 2017, which included 10 projects selected by the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners.

The first amendment to the MYIP was approved by the U.S. Department of Treasury on June 16, 2020, which included modification to three projects included in the Initial MYIP and the addition of eight new projects. The second amendment to the MYIP was approved by the U.S. Department of Treasury on Aug. 16, 2021, which proposed the addition of funds to one existing project and the addition of a new project. The third amendment to the MYIP was approved by the U.S. Department of Treasury on Feb. 16, 2024, which proposed the project alterations to two existing projects and the addition of eight new projects.

The RESTORE Act and the U.S. Department of Treasury require the county to complete a 45-day public comment period to obtain broad-based participation from the public prior to the submittal and approval of MYIP Amendment 4. Escambia County will take all public comments under advisement and reflect those comments in the public comment section of this document following the public comment period closure.
