If you are looking for a fun, family-friendly event that gives back to the community, Council on Aging of West Florida’s annual Kites on the Coast is for you!
Featuring cocktails, a sit-down gourmet dinner, and entertainment, the night will be one to remember. But it’s more than just a glitzy ball. This event stands out from the others in the best possible way: attendance will directly support local animals in need.
The Fur Ball is an annual event hosted by the Pensacola Humane Society as an opportunity for the public to have an exciting night out while contributing to a very worthy cause–the shelter pets under the Humane Society’s care.
The Pensacola Humane Society is a nonprofit organization that has been operating for over 80 years now. It doesn’t receive any funding on a city, state or federal level, only directly making money off of adoption fees, which is not nearly enough to cover the animals they care for and the wide work they do for the community.
“Last year, the Fur Ball netted approximately $175,000, so it’s our major fundraiser of the year,” Pensacola Humane Society Vice President of Development Mary Donovan McClellan said.
From 2024 to 2025, the Humane Society had 943 intakes, performed 1,535 spay/neuter operations and
provided 13,023 pounds of food for pets in need. They showed results too, with 921 adoptions and a whopping 98.7 percent save rate for animals in their care.
“The money that we raise goes towards giving each animal a chance from the time they come in the door till the time they leave,” McClellan said.
The animals of Pensacola need the Humane Society, but the Humane Society needs community support to continue helping animals in our area. The Fur Ball is one opportunity for Pensacola to fill that need.
Tickets to this event are $175, and all proceeds will go directly to funding Humane Society operations. Additionally, on the Humane Society website are sponsorship levels for the event, ranging from $500 to $20,000 for those who choose to donate beforehand. At the Ball, attendees will have the option of participating in both live and silent auctions. This includes a highlight of the night, the Bow Wow Meow Table Auction.
The Bow Wow Meow Auction table is a 10-seat table piled high with wrapped mystery gifts provided by donors, with each tower of gifts totaling up to hundreds of dollars. The highest bidder, upon successfully winning the table, gets to sit at the table in the front of the room for the rest of the night, and of course gets to take home all the gifts.
“The items range from jewelry to books to gift certificates and novelty items,” McClellan explained. “One thing we’re doing this year is offering incentives for the people who donate to the Bow Wow Meow Table. We decided it would be nice to recognize them in a special way.”
“The money that we raise goes towards giving each animal a chance from the time they come in the door till the time they leave.”
One of the incentives for contributors to the table is earning a place on the back of the Humane Society adoption van for their logo, getting advertisement for six to 12 months.
Not only will this event raise money to support the animals under the Society’s care, there will actually be animals present at the event itself. The gala features a puppy parade during cocktail hour (which the event dubs “Yappy Hour”) when attendees are able to interact with puppies currently up for adoption.
“We have our staff walking around as people are mingling with our puppies,” McClellan said. “They’re between the ages of eight weeks and three months and are so cute.”
Though adoptions are not available immediately on-site to avoid
any impulse adoptions, if attendees are interested in any of the puppies, they are encouraged to reach out to the shelter when the work week begins again to make arrangements.
Whether you plan on finding a new furry soulmate or just making
some adorable memories, there’s something for everyone. If you enjoy a good party and want to support the Humane Society and its mission to aid animals in need, Fur Ball is the place to be. For tickets and event details, visit pensacolahumane.org. ■

GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS AWARDS
MORE THAN $13 MILLION FOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT
THROUGH THE FLORIDA JOB GROWTH GRANT FUND
Governor Ron DeSantis awarded more than $13 million to the Panama City – Bay County Airport and Industrial District, the City of Port St. Joe and the Gulf County Board of County Commissioners through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund—supporting workforce and infrastructure needs for aerospace and aviation, and maritime industries.
“Today, I announced the latest round of Job Growth Grant Fund awards to support critical infrastructure and workforce housing in the Panhandle. These projects will create hundreds of good jobs and attract investments to help Panama City, Port St. Joe, and Gulf County prosper,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Since 2019, the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund has facilitated the creation of more than 42,000 new jobs and 32,000 workforce education opportunities throughout our state. Thanks to strategic investments like these, Florida is now the number one state in the nation for workforce education–five years ahead of the goal we had set in 2019.”
“These investments are a direct reflection of Governor DeSantis’ commitment to strengthening Florida’s communities through critical infrastructure improvements that fuel economic opportunity,” said Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly. “These investments will put Bay County, Gulf County and the City of Port St. Joe in a better position to attract new job creators to the area while also supporting job seekers in Florida’s great northwest.”
The Panama City – Bay County Airport and Industrial District will receive:
• $5 million — to construct an aircraft engine repair station and an engine testing facility at Northwest Florida
Beaches International Airport. The new 160,000 square foot facility will include a 120,000 square foot engine repair space and the remaining facility space will house the testing operations and is projected to create up to 400 new technician jobs in Bay County.
The City of Port St. Joe will receive:
• $2,250,709 — to fund a two-phase road project that will allow the construction of 177 workforce homes. The project includes resurfacing an already existing road along with constructing a new 1,380 linear foot connector road and hardening the utilities underground to protect against potential hurricane winds. This project is projected to bring in 190 jobs to the community.
The Gulf County Board of County Commissioners will receive:
• $6 million — to support the construction of a self-docking float dry dock at shipyard through a set of Mooring Dolphins. Currently, the shipyard has 125 jobs at Eastern Shipbuilding that will be retained and the project will create an additional 337 jobs.
Since 2019, the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund has awarded more than $318 million and created more than 42,000 new jobs and more than 32,000 new workforce education opportunities. The Florida Job Growth Grant Fund is an economic development program designed to promote public infrastructure and workforce training across the state. Proposals are reviewed by FloridaCommerce and are chosen by Governor DeSantis to meet the demands for workforce training or infrastructure needs in Florida communities.

GL52 SOUTHERN SERIES RETURNS TO PENSACOLA BAY MARCH 19 AND APRIL 9
The City of Pensacola welcomes the return of the GL52 sailboats to Pensacola Bay on March 19 for the second annual GL52 Southern Series regatta, where teams will compete for the Pensacola Cup.
The ClubSwan 28 Fleet, an American Magic and Nautor Swan collaboration, will also join the first Southern Series event and make its United States debut in Pensacola Bay during the regatta — competing alongside the GL52s.
“We’re looking forward to returning for a second year with two great events that continue to build momentum for the sport,” GL52 Fleet Manager Linda Lindquist said. “We had a great turnout last year, and we are excited to continue to spread awareness of what Pensacola has to offer, driving our mission of developing American Sailing talent.”
With the opening of the American Magic High Performance Center at the Port of Pensacola this past January, the city is part
of the growing world of professional sailing and the return of America’s marine industry — attracting global sailing championships such as SailGP, featuring F50 foiling catamaran racing, and advanced ship manufacturing with Birdon America.
“Pensacola is truly becoming a destination in world-class sailing and marine innovation,” Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “To have the GL52 Southern Series, the ClubSwan 28 Fleet and American Magic all collaborating right here in our city, showcasing cutting-edge engineering, manufacturing, world-class boatbuilding and design, is tremendous for Pensacola’s growth and innovation.”
The GL52 Series is a competition of high-performance sailboats comprising amateur and professional sailors, including those who have competed in the America’s Cup and Olympics. The two-part racing event will run March 19-22 and April 9-12.
REUBIN O’D. ASKEW LECTURE SERIES RETURNS WITH DISCUSSION ON "EAST ASIA, THE UNITED STATES, AND THE FUTURE
OF DEMOCRACY"
The University of West Florida Askew Lecture Series returns to the Museum of Commerce in downtown Pensacola on Thursday, April 9, with a timely discussion on “East Asia, the United States, and the Future of Democracy.” This year’s event features Dr. Erik Mobrand, professor at the Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University and a leading scholar on South Korean politics. A public reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 6 p.m., a Q&A session at 7 p.m. and a book signing at 7:15 p.m.
Mobrand’s research focuses on South Korean politics, democratization, urban politics and resistance, authoritarian legality and international science collaboration. He is the author of “Top-Down Democracy in South Korea” and earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University.
While popular movements in South Korea rightly grab the headlines for forcing political change and holding leaders to account, those movements are only part of the story of the construction and practice of democracy. In “Top-Down Democracy in South Korea,” Erik Mobrand documents another part: the elite-led design and management of electoral and party institutions. Even as the country left authoritarian rule behind, elites have responded to freer and fairer elections by entrenching rather
FREE DISASTER SERVICES EXPO BRINGS FAMILY FRIENDLY PREPAREDNESS TO AREA
Families across Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties are invited to spend a Sunday afternoon learning, exploring, and connecting at the free Disaster Services Expo on April 26, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bayview Community Center, located at 2001 E. Lloyd Street in Pensacola. Hosted by Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies (BRACE), the family friendly event is designed to help residents learn how to prepare for disasters and become familiar with local resources before a disaster strikes.
The Disaster Services Expo brings together local Long Term Recovery partners, trusted nonprofits, government agencies, local vendors, and service providers who assist residents before and after disasters. Participating organizations include those offering housing and rebuilding assistance, legal and financial guidance, preparedness and mitigation services, recovery and support services, contractors and home hardening experts, and more.
Families will have opportunities to learn about basic first aid training, view fire extinguisher demonstrations, receive practical information on generator safety, and more. Additional activity areas will focus on household preparedness, including pet care planning, looking up flood risk by address, and signing up to receive local disaster alerts.
The Escambia County and Santa Rosa County Emergency Management offices will
participate, along with a variety of emergency related vehicles available for children to explore, including Escambia County’s mobile command post trailer, THOR, as well as other City and County emergency vehicles.
To encourage exploration throughout the Expo, children and families can participate in a passport activity by visiting each area and receiving a stamp. Those who complete their passports will have the opportunity to enter raffles for household disaster preparedness items. Food trucks will be available on site, making the Expo an easy and engaging Sunday afternoon outing for families.
The Expo also highlights coordination among recovery partners through the Disaster Services RoundTable, a collaborative network led by BRACE that brings organizations together to share resources, address challenges and strengthen disaster readiness response, and recovery across both counties.
“Preparedness works best when families know what resources are available and feel comfortable reaching out before a disaster happens,” said Dr. Nick Jackson, Chief Executive Officer of BRACE. “The Disaster Services Expo creates a welcoming space for residents to learn, ask questions, and connect with the organizations that serve our community.”
The Disaster Services Expo is open to the public and free to attend.

$555K
NIH AWARD TO LAUNCH NEURONAUTS SCHOLARS PROGRAM
than abandoning exclusionary practices and forms of party organization.
Exploring South Korea’s political development from 1945 through the end of dictatorship in the 1980s and into the twenty-first century, Mobrand challenges the view that the origins of the post-authoritarian political system lie in a series of popular movements that eventually undid repression. He argues that we should think about democratization not as the establishment of an entirely new system, but as the subtle blending of new formal rules with earlier authority structures, political institutions and legitimizing norms.
"Amid a global third wave of autocratization, questions about the future of democracy have taken on new urgency,” said Dr. Elvis Kim, assistant professor of comparative politics in the Reubin O'D. Askew Department of Government. “This year’s Askew lecture will examine how developments in East Asia shape our understanding of both the resilience and the vulnerabilities of democracy in a rapidly changing world."
The Askew Lecture Series is a downtown community talk on current political issues and public policy topics named in honor of the late Florida Governor, Reubin O'D. Askew, the department’s namesake. Governor Askew was a champion of civic engagement known for tackling vital public policy issues of the day.
This event is free and open to the public.
The University of West Florida has been awarded a five-year, $555,000 National Institutes of Health R25 Research Education Grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to establish the NeuroNauts Scholars Program. The program will provide cohorts of eight local high school juniors and seniors with an intensive eight-week summer research experience spanning multiple areas of neuroscience, from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease to cognitive psychology, computational neuroscience, stroke health disparities and sensory processing in neurodevelopmental disorders.
"Programs like NeuroNauts represent exactly the kind of innovative initiative that advances both our research mission and our commitment to the people of Northwest Florida," said UWF Provost Dr. Jaromy Kuhl. "Introducing high school students to real scientific research, mentored by faculty who are leaders in their fields, is how we build the next generation of scientists and strengthen the pipeline into STEM careers for our region."
The project is led by Dr. Rodney Guttmann, professor and interim chair of the Department of Biology, and Dr. Allison Schwartz, director of UWF's Office of Undergraduate Research. The program pairs each student with a faculty mentor for the full eight weeks, embedding them in active research laboratories across biology, psychology, mathematics and public health.
"What makes this program different is that these students are not watching demonstrations or completing cookbook exercises," Guttmann said. "They are embedded in active research programs working side by side with faculty on real questions. One student might be developing blood-based biomarkers for early Alzheimer's detection while another is running EEG experiments on sensory processing or building compu -
tational models of neural network dynamics down the hall. That breadth of exposure is something most students do not encounter until graduate school, and we are offering it to high schoolers right here in Pensacola."
The program’s faculty mentors represent a wide range of neuroscience expertise, including research on blood-based biomarkers for early Alzheimer’s detection, exerciserelated neuroprotection in Parkinson’s disease, immune system roles in neurological disorders, EEG studies of sensory processing in autism and ADHD, visual working memory and cognition, computational brain modeling, and stroke risk and health disparities. The team also includes a physician providing clinical perspective linking laboratory research to patient care, along with a nationally recognized undergraduate research leader who oversees program evaluation and research training.
"This award reflects the depth of research talent we have at UWF," said Dr. Mohamed Khabou, dean of UWF's Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering. "Faculty from multiple departments came together to build a genuinely interdisciplinary neuroscience training program. The potential impact on these students and on our region's future scientific workforce is enormous."
The program will recruit from Escambia and Santa Rosa County high schools. Students will be paid for their participation, removing financial barriers that might otherwise prevent talented young people from gaining research experience. Beyond daily laboratory work, the program includes seminars on research ethics, scientific communication and career development, culminating in a student research symposium. The inaugural program is set to run from June 1 through July 24, 2026. The deadline to apply is April 1.

Live music from Az Izz set the tone before award-winning auctioneer Charlie Adcock took the stage to lead the live auction. Guests eagerly raised their paddles to bid on exclusive packages, including a night at Sphere in Las Vegas, a ski adventure in Lake Tahoe, and a European getaway of their choice.
Throughout the evening, attendees also entered for a chance to win a $5,000 shopping spree donated by Maharaja’s Fine Jewelry, along with 50/50 opportunity tickets. Through generous sponsorships, live and silent auction bids, and opportunity ticket sales, the gala raised $101,531 to advance trauma care in our community.
“We are deeply grateful to the individuals and organizations whose generosity and belief in our mission made this evening possible,” said Adrienne Maygarden, President of Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation. “All funds raised will directly strengthen trauma services at Sacred Heart Bay, ensuring continued access to high-quality, compassionate care for the families of Bay County ensuring lifesaving services remain close to home for our community when they are needed most.”
