PENSACOLA VINTAGE FEST RETURNS TO PENSACOLA FAIRGROUNDS

Grab a tote bag, throw on your best vintage ‘fit and get ready to thrift—it’s time for Pensacola Vintage Fest (PVF).

Hosted by Pensacola Vintage Collective, PVF is the Gulf Coast’s largest vintage clothing event. Now in its second year, the festival features a variety of local and regional vendors selling all types of vintage clothing and accessories from the 1950s through the early 2000s.

Pensacola Vintage Collective is run by local vintage seller Ryan Smith, who has been engaged with the local vintage community for years. Smith sells curated vintage pieces through his local business, Obsolete Heat. You may have seen his booth inside Bo’s Local Finds or Blue Moon Antique Mall.

Since its establishment in 2019, Pensacola Vintage Collective has hosted a multitude of vintage shopping events throughout the community. From the popular Vintage Block Party at The Handlebar to various pop-up events at Odd

Colony and Garden Street Vintage, Smith has remained dedicated to promoting local vintage dealers and cultivating a community around a shared love of all things vintage.

Held in July 2024, the inaugural PVF was a huge success, with an outcome of over 1,500 attendees.

Despite hosting popular vintage events in the past, the inaugural PVF serves as Pensacola Vintage Collective’s largest event in history.

“I didn’t know how many people would come out until about five days before the event. Then, I realized what was going to happen.

The attendance was hard to kind of gauge. It wasn’t until the last few days that we were selling so many tickets per day that we knew we were going to have a huge crowd. We were very pleased with how it turned out last year,” Smith said.

Smith anticipates a similar turnout for this year’s event, stating that tickets are already moving.

To accommodate a crowd of this size, PVF is held inside the 22,000-square-foot expo hall at the Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds, and the A/C will be pumping.

“We’ve made provisions to keep the building cool. We want to mitigate some of the heat because it got very hot in there last year. We definitely heard those concerns, so this year, we are making provisions to try to keep the building as cold as possible,” Smith explained.

PVF vendors will be strictly selling vintage clothing event, unlike an antique market with homewares and other goods. Vintage vendors from across the South will line the expo halll with racks upon racks of trendy vintage finds.

More than 75 vendors will be selling highly curated selections of vintage men’s, women’s and kid’s clothing in all styles and genres. Whether you like to rock the retro styles of the 70s or embrace the currently trending Y2K vibes, PVF offers a little something for everyone.

With such a successful turnout at last year’s PVF, event organizers are expecting even more attendees to travel to Pensacola. Both dealers and shoppers alike will be coming in from across the Gulf Coast, including neighboring states like Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana.

“One of the main differences this year is that we’re drawing a lot more vendors from out of state. Last year we had a couple, but this year we’ll have close to 20 people who are traveling more than 100 miles to vend with us. I had all sorts of people hitting me up for spots as soon as we made those available a couple of weeks ago,” Smith said.

In addition to out-of-state vendors, a slew of vendors from the Pensacola vintage community, including Spinach Vintage, Second Hand Haven, and Recycled Trendz and more, will also be in attendance. Some of the other confirmed vendors that will be traveling from areas across the Gulf Coast region include Rare Worn from Mobile, Alabama and Retro Ruby from Panama City.

Flipping through racks and digging through bins is sure to work up an appetite. There will be plenty of food trucks on-site to feed all the hungry thrifters. Sauce Boss will be serving up their delicious juicy burgers. Waffle Boutique will bring their unique and delicious bubble waffle treats. The Rican

Vegan will dish up delectable vegan food for everyone to enjoy. Finally, Momma’s Lemonade will be there to quench the thrifter thirst! Whether you’re wearing headto-toe vintage on the daily or just dipping your toe into the vintage clothing world, PVF is a unique event that is sure to be fun for everyone. Tickets to Pensacola Vintage Fest are on sale now for $10 at pensacolavintage.com. Early Bird tickets are also available online for $15, which grants early entry to the event for those wanting to beat the crowd and be the first to look through available merchandise. Kids 12 and under may attend for free. Parking at the event is free. Pensacola Vintage Fest will run from 11 am to 5 pm on July 13, with early entry granted to Early Bird ticket holders at 10 am. The Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds is located at 6655 Mobile Highway in Pensacola.

Perino, a 23-year veteran of the agency, has been instrumental in shaping EW Bullock’s creative output and operational excellence as Chief Operating Officer. In her new role as CEO, she will lead the agency into its next chapter, continuing its legacy of awardwinning marketing, advertising and public relations across the Gulf Coast.

“Leslie has been a driving force behind some of our most successful campaigns and client relationships,” said Bullock. “Her steady leadership, creativity and deep understanding of our clients’ needs make her the ideal person to guide EW Bullock into the future.”

A graduate of the University of West Florida with a degree in communication arts/advertising, Perino joined EW Bullock in 2002 and quickly rose through the ranks, managing major accounts such as Visit Pensacola, Pensacola Energy and the Santa Rosa Island Authority. For more than 40 years, he’s led this agency with a deep commitment to our clients and our community,” said Perino. “EW Bullock is where I found not just a career, but a calling. It has always been a place where creativity and collaboration thrive, and I’m excited to lead our team into a bold and innovative future.”

PENSACOLA RESIDENTS CAN NOW OPT FOR CURBSIDE RECYCLING

The City of Pensacola announces the reinstatement of its curbside recycling program, made possible through a strategic partnership with The Recycling Partnership. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.

After a period of program suspension, the City of Pensacola has worked diligently to identify and implement sustainable solutions for its residents. The city applied for and received a grant from The Recycling Partnership, a purpose-driven organization committed to building a better recycling system that delivers economic and environmental benefits for communities and the industry. Pensacola was selected to receive grant support because of its dedication to reinstating recycling in the community. The grant from The Partnership, with support from the American Beverage Association’s “Every Bottle Back” initiative and the Florida Beverage Association, will bring expertise, resources, and best practices to ensure a successful and efficient recycling program.

“We have always recognized the importance of recycling to our community and the environment,” said Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves. “This collaboration with The Recycling Partnership will bring back a robust and effective recycling program that will empower our residents to make a positive impact.”

The revitalized recycling program will focus on:

• Enhanced Education and Outreach: Providing clear and consistent information to residents about what can and cannot be recycled.

• Improved Infrastructure: Upgrading collection and processing systems to maximize efficiency and minimize contamination.

• Increased Participation: Encouraging residents to actively participate in the

program and contribute to a cleaner, greener Pensacola.

Understanding Your New Garbage Bill: What You Need to Know:

We understand the service fee structure can be a bit confusing, but here’s how it will break down:

Based on city ordinance, beginning in October, the monthly rate for garbage collection only is scheduled to be $30.

For those who do not want to recycle, your monthly base garbage bill will decrease to $24.99 for once-a-week garbage service.

For those who do opt in for recycling, your monthly bill for both garbage and recycling services will be $32.99 for once-a-week garbage and recycling pick-up. This minimal $8 fee helps the city cover the additional costs associated with providing a recycling service.

If a resident feels they need a second trash can, that would also be an $8 fee added on top of the base rate.

Finally, weekly yard waste service has never been charged to residents. We will continue to keep it this way under the new fee structure.

What’s next?

Residents should be on the lookout for a Business Reply Mailer that will provide guidance on how to conveniently opt into recycling in the coming weeks. Residents choosing to recycle can expect to receive detailed information about the new recycling guidelines, collection schedules, and other program details. The City of Pensacola and The Recycling Partnership are committed to providing ongoing support and resources to ensure a smooth and successful program launch.

Early enrollers should expect to get their recycling carts the week of July 7.

Additional information, including how to opt into recycling, can be found at cityofpensacolarecycles.com.

NATIONAL NAVAL AVIATION MUSEUM HOSTS STORYTIME AND 'BUILD A BIRD' EVENT

CELEBRATING NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK

Families, aviation enthusiasts, and young readers are invited to a special summer event at the National Naval Aviation Museum on Tuesday, July 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., celebrating the release of the museum’s newest children’s book, Thach and the Blues. The event will take place in the Blue Angels Atrium immediately following the morning’s Blue Angels practice demonstration.

Written by the museum’s Education Director, Dianna Hayden, Thach and the Blues introduces children to the wonder of naval aviation through the eyes of Thach, a curious duckling experiencing his first air show with his grandparents, Lolli and Pop Pop. From the rumble of Fat Albert to the breathtaking precision of the Blue Angels’ Super Hornets, the book captures the excitement, discovery, and joy of flight with rhythmic storytelling and vibrant illustrations.

During the event, Hayden will read her new book aloud to children and families in attendance. Guests can also enjoy themed crafts, including creating their own fowlinspired artwork. Children will have the opportunity to build and take home their own Thach duck, with a small additional cost. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, with all proceeds directly supporting the museum’s Education Department through the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation.

This unique event offers a memorable way to inspire young minds through literature and aviation. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for the Blue Angels practice flight, then stay for storytime and handson fun.

The event is free and open to the public, with registration available online at: https:// naval-aviation-museum-foundation.idloom. events/build-a-bird-at-the-national-navalaviation-museum.

A $225,000 GIFT ESTABLISHES THE CHARLES ANDERSON PENTON STEM SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

A $225,000 gift from the Penton Family has established the Charles Anderson Penton STEM Scholarship Endowment for Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering students. Through his estate, the late Carl Penton left the gift in memory of his father, Charles Penton, a devoted advocate for higher education who found great joy in the sciences. Charles Penton retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 44 years of service.

“Our parents were the greatest,” said Gwenith Graham, sister of the late Carl Penton. “They sacrificed all they had, were very loving, and taught us the greatest gifts of life: values, your word is your bond, never take something for nothing, and an honest day for an honest dollar.”

Gwenith Graham added that the gift is a reflection of enduring values, and a legacy that will continue to inspire and empower others through the power of education.

The gift reflects Carl Penton’s desire to honor his father’s passion for learning and

to support future generations of students in pursuing their academic dreams. Carl Penton was an accomplished educator and administrator in Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, Japan and China. He had a life of service beginning with the American Peace Corps and continued with writings and publications of various books about antiquities. His last 10 years before his retirement were spent working with Chinese and American physicians to recognize the accomplishments of early American medical missionaries who established various hospitals in China. In 1998, the Penton family also established the Arvie Malon Penton Endowment, in memory of Carl and Gwenith’s mother. That endowment supports the UWF Libraries and its special collections, ensuring that knowledge and history remain accessible to the University community in perpetuity. For more information about the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering, visit uwf.edu/hmcse.

the necessary tools to address challenges across multiple fields and governing bodies.

“Earning the ACC II designation is a significant accomplishment that reflects the completion of hours of rigorous coursework aimed at strengthening the leadership skills of county commissioners,” said Eric Poole, Executive Director of ICG. “What makes this achievement even more noteworthy is that all ICG courses are entirely voluntary and these commissioners are choosing to participate solely out of their commitment to becoming better public servants.”

ACC II encourages commissioners to broaden and refine the skills they learned in previous education programs while promoting collaboration across all levels of government.

Alongside Commissioner Eddington, 11 commissioners earned the ACC II designation at the award ceremony and are the sixth class of graduates to complete the program.

ACC II is made possible through a continuing partnership with the University of Florida/IFAS Extension.

Pensacola Sings strives to provide a musical space where children can develop confidence, teamwork and communication skills, regardless of their financial background. Choir sessions will be held at the Fricker, Woodland Heights and Gull Point Resource Centers. By holding rehearsals where children already meet and eliminating barriers related to affordability and location, the program guarantees the maximum number of young singers can experience the joy of music at no cost to them and their families.

Children need a place to call their own.

Impact surveys conducted after last season’s sessions show 92% of participants, parents and city staff believe that Pensacola Sings provides a sense of belonging and community for singers. Another 90% reported better problem solving skills, demonstrating that music plays a role in developing critical thinking skills. The act of singing together actively reduces stress, so much so that 80% of participants attest that choir helps them manage their stress and anxiety.

“Music is a powerful tool for connection, self-expression and personal growth,” Miguel Aldahondo, Director of Community Programs at PCC, said. “We believe that the children in our community have much to offer through the arts, especially when given the right opportunities. This partnership provides a more accurate representation of not only our youth’s potential but also the commitment of our city.”

Building upon the experience gained from past sessions, the partnership will be focusing on key strategies to enhance consistency, communication and participation across resource centers. These strategies include:

Streamlining communication by managing registration through PCC’s systems

• Expanding transportation solutions for students needing access to performances and events

• Strengthening family commitment by providing orientations, program incentives and performance opportunities

• Enhancing data collection to measure social and emotional growth and academic impact

Singers who have participated in this session of Pensacola Sings will be performing on August 2 alongside other campers from the PCC’s Summer Festival camp. The performance will be held at First Baptist Church of Pensacola and will begin at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. ALAQUA ANIMAL REFUGE OFFERS SANCTUARY TO TWO AFRICAN TORTOISES FROM GULF WORLD AMID WELFARE CONCERNS

Alaqua Animal Refuge has welcomed two African Spurred Tortoises from Gulf World Marine Park in Panama City Beach, providing a permanent and enriching home for the pair following increased public concern over animal care standards at the facility.

The two tortoises, both approximately 40 years old, were transferred to Alaqua earlier this month. The tortoises were surrendered to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), who then contacted Alaqua to request permanent placement. “Chewbacca,” a 77-pound male, and “Mr. Leia,” a 120-pound male, are settling in well and are now under the dedicated care of Alaqua’s team. Both animals are members of one of the largest tortoise species in the world and require significant space, heat, and a specialized diet to thrive. The transfer comes as heightened public attention is being paid to the welfare of animals in captive environments, particularly in light of recent scrutiny surrounding conditions at Gulf World. While Alaqua does not house marine wildlife, the organization stepped in to provide a safe solution for these land-dwelling reptiles.

“This was about giving Chewbacca and Mr. Leia the kind of care every animal deserves-room to roam, a species-appropriate habitat, and the peace of a true sanctuary,” said Laurie Hood, Founder and President of Alaqua. “They’ve spent decades on display. Now they get to just be tortoises.”

African Spurred Tortoises—also known as Sulcata tortoises—can live more than 70 years and are native to the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. They’re often kept as exotic pets, which can lead to welfare issues

when their needs are misunderstood or unmet. Alaqua plans to incorporate Chewbacca and Mr. Leia into its educational programming to help raise awareness about responsible exotic pet ownership and longterm animal care.

This addition to Alaqua’s sanctuary underscores the refuge’s ongoing commitment to stepping in when animals have no voice and nowhere else to go.

About Alaqua Animal Refuge

Alaqua Animal Refuge is a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary, located in the panhandle of Florida. As the Southeast’s premier 501(c)3 refuge, Alaqua believes that every abused, neglected and homeless animal deserves a second chance. Committed to providing protection, shelter, and care to animals in need, this private, nonprofit Refuge also offers an adoption center, veterinary clinic, educational outreach, and community programs that extend far beyond their geographic location. Since its inception in 2007, Alaqua, led by Founder Laurie Hood, has become a recognized leader in animal rescue, welfare, cruelty prevention, and advocacy. Alaqua is currently in the midst of a capital campaign to complete the building of their one-of-a-kind facility— the first in the United States—on 100 acres. The new facility and sanctuary will allow Alaqua to continue to do the important work of animal rescue and rehabilitation, as well as be an educational and training center for animal welfare advocates as a place that will inspire, empower, and educate others to make change in our society and recreate the model worldwide.

SRC ANIMAL SERVICES USING INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY FROM PETCO LOVE LOST TO HELP

REUNITE LOST PETS WITH THEIR FAMILIES

Santa Rosa County Animal Services (SRCAS) is proudly joining forces with Petco Love, a national nonprofit organization working to lead and inspire change for pets – and animal welfare organizations across the country, on a shared mission to help reunite lost pets with their families should they ever go missing, through Petco Love Lost. Sadly, according to industry statistics, one in every three pets will go missing in their lifetime.

Petco Love Lost is a free, easy-to-use lost-and-found tool that unifies lost and found pet listings from across the country— including posts from thousands of animal welfare organizations, Nextdoor, and Neighbors by Ring—into one searchable database. The platform uses photo-matching AI to help reunite pets by comparing images of lost pets with those of found pets. Accessible to both animal welfare organizations and the general public, Petco Love Lost allows anyone who has lost or found a pet to upload a photo and instantly search for possible matches in nearby shelters or in the community. Features include a scrollable list of pets currently in SRCAS's care and an interactive map that displays lost and found reports, shelter pets, and community posts from Neighbors and Nextdoor—all conveniently viewable on SRCAS’s website.

The Showcase highlighted the program’s success and impact to legislators and federal partners. “CyberSkills2Work started in 2020 as a vision to address the national cybersecurity workforce challenge holistically,” said Dr. Eman El-Sheikh, associate vice president, UWF Center for Cybersecurity. “Today, we are proud to highlight that the program has prepared more than 3,500 transitioning military, veterans and first responders for cybersecurity and AI work roles at no cost to them. In addition, we have built the framework for a scalable national program that strengthens our cyber workforce and national security for the future. We are truly grateful for the support of our legislators, federal, employer, and academic partners to make CyberSkills2Work successful.”

Legislators and their staff from across the nation attended the showcase and met with the CyberSkills2Work team, including Congressman Jared Moskowitz (FL), Congressman Jimmy Patronis (FL), Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN), Congressman Brad Finstad (MN) , and Senator Mike Rounds (SD).

“We work tirelessly for pets in our care, and that includes helping lost pets get home and back to their families where they belong,” said Santa Rosa County Animal Services Chief Randy Lambert. “There’s nothing more rewarding than reuniting families with their beloved pets and with Petco Love Lost, we’re confident it can lead to many more happy reunions, right here in Santa Rosa County.”

“We know that one in three pets goes missing in their lifetime, an estimated 10 million pets each year, and we’re not ok with that,” said Petco Love President Susanne Kogut. “That gives us 10 million reasons why we created Petco Love Lost, because we believe nothing is more important than keeping people and pets together for a lifetime of love. Petco Love is a life-changing nonprofit organization that makes communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. We’ve helped find loving homes for more than 7 million pets in partnership with Petco and organizations nationwide. Our love for pets drives us to lead with innovation, creating tools animal lovers need to reunite lost pets, and lead with passion, inspiring and mobilizing communities and our more than 4,000 animal welfare partners to drive lifesaving change alongside us. Is love calling you? Join us. Visit PetcoLove.org or follow us on Facebook, Instagram, X, Threads, and LinkedIn to be part of the lifesaving work we lead every day.

The funding opportunity includes seven eligible project categories that align with the Estuary Program’s CCMP: Water Quality, Sedimentation, Habitat Restoration, Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Watershed Awareness and Education, Resilience, and Participatory Science. Over the past five years, PPBEP has awarded over $1 Million to 41 projects in the community.

The deadline to apply is 11:59pm CT on July 31, 2025. We are pleased to announce that the grant implementation period will be extended to a 15-month timeframe beginning October 1, 2025 and ending December 31, 2026. Due to this longer implementation period, funding cycles will occur every two years; after the 2025-2026 cycle, the next call for applications will not occur until 2027-2028.

Priority consideration will be given to “shovel ready” action projects and projects that inform, engage, and educate the community. Projects that leverage match, including volunteer efforts, will also receive priority consideration.
