TAKE SHAPE IN DOWNTOWN PENSACOLA CUBED MURALS

If you’ve taken a stroll by Museum Plaza within the past few weeks, you may have spotted artists painting on a row of large, three-dimensional cubes in front of the J. Earle Bowden Building. These installations are part of the annual CUBED art exhibition, hosted by the Pensacola Museum of Art (PMA).

CUBED is a public art installation featuring murals designed and painted by local artists. Connotated by the exhibition’s name, each mural is painted on the side of a large 8-foot-by-8-foot wooden cube. Each of the selected artists is invited to paint one of four panels on each of the four cubes located in Museum Plaza. With each of the panels showcasing a different mural, the exhibition offers a vibrant and creative display of art that harnesses the creative spirit of our local art community.

Established in 2017, CUBED was originally sponsored by Foo Foo Festival in collaboration with the PMA. Local artists Evan Levin and Ashton Howard came up with the idea for the exhibition after spending 70 days live painting a mural on Jefferson Street. The pair wanted to share more live painting experiences with the community, and thus CUBED was born.

The inaugural event took place November 2 through 12, 2017 at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza in downtown Pensacola. During this time, the public was invited to watch the live painting process and engage with the artists as they painted their murals. After the live

event, when the paintings were completed, the cubes were moved to their permanent location in Museum Plaza.

“The original CUBED murals continued to be on display for the next three years, give or take a few that were repainted in 2019,” explained CUBED artist, PMA Preparator and Curatorial Coordinator, Jaime Diffee.

“In 2020, Hurricane Sally came through and all but one of the panels were destroyed. In 2021, after the COVID shutdowns and recovering from all the damage from the hurricane, the UWF Historic Trust wanted to reinvite guests back to the site with an open house that included the newest installation of CUBED. That version of CUBED is how we still run it today.”

CUBED has been hosted annually since 2017, except for in 2020 due to COVID-19. Since its inception, the exhibition has grown to become a permanent fixture of downtown Pensacola. .

CUBED 2025 marks the eighth installment of the rotating exhibit. This year’s exhibition officially kicked off with a day of live painting on March 1, when artists first began painting their murals. With the hustle and bustle of a busy Saturday in downtown Pensacola and Mardi Gras in full swing, the downtown area remained busy throughout the day, providing an excellent opportunity for audiences to observe the artists at work during the live painting event.

“Participating in CUBED 2025 was a phenomenal experience. Creating art can sometimes feel like

a solitary endeavor, but it was such a joy to interact with people as I was painting,” CUBED 2025 artist Kaitlin Rawley said. “Because Mardi Gras was happening at the same time as the live painting event this year, I think there were more people who wouldn’t traditionally attend an art event who were able to stop by, walk through the cubes and hopefully enjoy the experience.”

If you missed the live painting day, there’s still plenty of time to check out the murals. Due to the scope of the project, many artists will continue to work on their panels in the coming weeks. Each artist spends hours over multiple days planning and painting their masterpieces.

“Every year we host the CUBED live painting event over a weekend, but I’ve never yet seen someone who could paint an 8-foot-by-8foot mural within two days, so we offer an additional week or two for artists to work around their schedule and the erratic spring Florida weather,” Diffee explained.

The 2025 CUBED murals will stay up in Museum Plaza for about 50 weeks for the public to enjoy. Around the start of next year’s CUBED exhibition, the slate will be wiped clean and the cubes will be repainted white in preparation for the next set of murals.

This year, a total of 24 artists applied to participate in the annual exhibition. Of the 24 applications received, only 11 artists were selected to participate. This year’s participating artists include Carlotta Succi, Angelica Tilton, Sasha Suey-Stoler, Katie Romano, Lindsey Hampton, Sean Bush, Michelle Luther, Kaitlin Rawley,

Yvonne Christine, Aidan Garcia and Jaime Diffee.

Each year, CUBED applicants are selected based on their proposals, and overall experience. “The judges for CUBED go through all the proposals, looking for artists that at least have some experience painting larger surfaces. Painting an 8-foot-by-8-foot mural in a couple days is a lot of work to do, especially if the artist isn’t used to it,” Diffee said. “We want CUBED to be a friendly introduction to mural painting, and we welcome all beginning artists to submit. There’s a lot less pressure in painting a mural when you know it’s only up for so long.”

CUBED provides artists with the temporary canvas to create large-scale works that they might not typically explore. Rather than following a specific theme, the exhibition allows artists the freedom to unleash their creativity and create any type of design. With each cube being different, the unique murals add to the city’s vibrant arts scene.

“Art is an integral ingredient that helps craft the culture of a city.

I’m elated that Cubed allows local artists like myself to get our art outdoors where it can contribute to downtown Pensacola’s culture. Every year, more murals and public art displays are added around town, bringing more flavor and personality to the city,” Rawley said.

The cubes are situated just a few feet apart from each other, allowing artists to spend time together, especially on the first day of painting. This environment provides artists with the opportunity to

collaborate and learn from each other, expanding their techniques.

“I love the interactions between the artists every year. Since everyone gets one side of a giant cube, they’re working closely with their mural neighbors for several days. Artists end up sharing different techniques and learning new things from the other artists, all while encouraging each other,” Diffee said.

Being founded on the concept of live painting, CUBED places a large emphasis on community. From the first day of the live painting event to the many weeks that the murals are on display in the downtown area, the exhibition fosters a shared experience between artists and the public.

“I love the supportive public reactions while the artists are out there painting. The general feedback we receive is thankfulness for the art that artists are providing. The local community seems excited to see what new things are going to be painted. The location of the cubes is near the Pensacola Children’s Museum, so there are always younger kids who get excited for the murals every year,” Diffee said.

CUBED 2025 is currently on display in Museum Plaza at 300 S. Tarragona St. in downtown Pensacola. For more information on the exhibition and to learn more about upcoming events and exhibits at the PMA, visit pensacolamuseum.org/ arts/public-art.

2025 CELEBRATION OF SCOUTING BANQUET HONORS SCOUTS FROM PENSACOLA TO PANAMA CITY

Scouts ages 7 to 70 and their friends and family attended a noble gathering at the Spanish Trail Scout Reservation to celebrate the accomplishments of many outstanding individuals at the Gulf Coast Council Scouting America Celebration of Scouting. The medieval-themed banquet centered around service and leadership, highlighting 88 Scouts as part of the 2024 Eagle Scout Class, various Scout-level project and leadership awards, and volunteers who consistently go above and beyond.

The evening’s keynote speaker, Vince Mayfield, Eagle Scout, Board President, and CEO of Bit-Wizards and TalkingParents, started by recognizing the volunteers, mentors, parents, and leaders who make the Scouting movement real for thousands of youths across the region. Noting it’s not just a recognition of what they do, but who they are. Mayfield also highlighted the 115-year milestone Scouting America reached this year, “That’s more than a century of building character, shaping leaders, and preparing young people to face the world with courage, kindness, and grit.”

Mayfield then shared an emotional walk down memory lane, taking attendees back to when he became a Cub Scout in 1973 as part of the Gulf Coast Council. He vividly recalled many impactful moments during his childhood and teenage years as a Scout and attributed his successes throughout life to the morals and values Scouting instilled in him. “The next 115 years depend on us. Our example. Our unity... It lives in every story. Every act of service. Every young person who discovers who they are – because you showed up,” Mayfield said in conclusion.

To culminate the evening’s festivities, seven categories of awards were presented ranging from Scouting achievements to volunteer recognition and those who have given back through time and monetary donations:

The QGAME conference, held annually each spring, gathers financial experts together to share their knowledge, expertise and outlook for the future with graduate and undergraduate students and faculty from universities around the globe. Weber, a senior finance major, said the event was incredibly insightful.

“Hearing from top financial professionals from leading firms is something I will not forget,” Weber said. “What interested me the most was listening to some of the most influential figures in finance share their views on the near future of the U.S. economy, especially considering the current global and domestic challenges. PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CITY OF PENSACOLA, PENSACOLA HABITAT/ COMMUNITY LAND TRUST AND HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION PRODUCING RESULTS

The City of Pensacola is pleased to announce significant progress in its collaborative effort with the Pensacola Habitat/ Community Land Trust and the Home Builders Association of West Florida to revitalize three previously owned city lots. These properties will soon have new or rehabilitated homes at affordable price points. This initiative aligns with the city’s commitment to increasing access to quality housing for residents.

Last week, the partner agencies gathered at 2300 W. Jackson St. to view the progress being made there. “We are thrilled to see these properties being put to good use in a way that directly benefits our residents,” said Mayor D.C. Reeves. “Affordable housing is a priority for our city, and partnerships like this help ensure that families have access to safe, high-quality housing.”

Additional lots at 1491 N. E St. and 113 N. Spring St. are being transformed into highquality, affordable housing opportunities, providing more families with the ability to become homeowners in Pensacola. By working with trusted local organizations, the city seeks to develop sustainable housing solutions that improve neighborhoods and foster community growth.

Jennifer Mancini, Executive Officer with the Home Builders Association of West Florida, says, “On behalf of our volunteer builders and the many HBA members donating materials and services for this meaningful project, I would like to thank the mayor, the City of Pensacola and the Community Land Trust/Habitat for partnering with us. “We’re grateful to the City of Pensacola for recognizing and supporting the vision of the Community Land Trust. ESTUARY PROGRAM LAUNCHES LIVING SHORELINE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program is pleased to announce the launch of the Living Shoreline Assistance Program to help waterfront property owners and community groups address shoreline erosion in the Pensacola and Perdido Bay watersheds.

Across the Pensacola and Perdido Bay Watersheds, coastlines are threatened by erosion and shoreline hardening, impacting both coastal residents and our local waters.

A "living shoreline" is a nature-based approach to protecting coastal shorelines.

Living shorelines use elements like native plants or oyster shell to keep shorelines stable while replicating natural shoreline ecosystems. "Hybrid shorelines" are also used, blending natural elements with nonliving materials like rocks or artificial oyster reefs when needed. Both living and hybrid shorelines help prevent erosion, create habitat for wildlife, and improve water quality.

While bulkheads and other “hard” structures have been traditional solutions for erosion, living shorelines are more effective, sustainable, and typically more cost-efficient over time. They better withstand storms and provide added benefits like flood mitigation, shoreline stabilization, and habitat creation.

Increased shoreline hardening has dramatically altered the Pensacola and Perdido Bay Watersheds, with roughly 55% of Pensacola Bay and 27% of Perdido Bay shorelines now hardened. Through this Program, PPBEP aims to reduce additional shoreline hardening across the bays and promote the use of living shorelines.

The PPBEP Living Shoreline Assistance Program empowers coastal property owners to implement a living or hybrid shoreline to benefit both their property and our local waters. Program assistance includes technical resources, expert design guidance, help navigating the permitting process, and financial assistance to make projects more affordable. Through the Living Shoreline Assistance Program, PPBEP aims to restore residents’ connection to their coastline.

The Program will provide assistance in two phases. The first phase will support projects in the Perdido Bay Watershed and will run from Jan. 1, 2025, to Dec. 31, 2025. The second phase will support projects in the Pensacola Bay Watershed and will take place from Aug. 1, 2025, to Dec. 31, 2026.

Interested commercial or residential property owners, neighborhood associations, and community groups are invited to attend an open house to learn more about the program, meet with staff and discuss their project, and schedule a site assessment. Scheduled open houses are below:

• May 1, 2025 2-8 p.m.

Perdido Key Community Center

15500 Perdido Key Drive., Pensacola, FL 32507

Interested property owners can find more information on eligibility and application details at ppbep.org/livingshorelines.

The Living Shoreline Assistance Program is made possible with funding through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. About the Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program

PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SELECTED TO HOST 2027 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SOUTHEAST CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF AIRPORT EXECUTIVES

Pensacola International Airport has been selected to host the 2027 Annual Meeting of the Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (SECAAAE), which will bring over 500 aviation leaders from across the region to Florida’s Gulf Coast.

A team from Pensacola International Airport and Visit Pensacola traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, to present the city's winning bid. The team included Ken Ibold, Deputy Director of Pensacola International Airport; Todd Payne, Assistant Director of Strategy and Development; and Darien Schaefer, President and CEO of Visit Pensacola. Together, they highlighted Pensacola’s strengths, including its renowned beaches, thriving aviation industry, and warm hospitality, making a compelling case for the city.

“We are honored and excited to bring the SEC-AAAE Annual Meeting to Pensacola in 2027,” said Matt Coughlin, Executive Director of Pensacola International Airport. “This is an incredible opportunity to highlight our region’s rich aviation history, growing airport, and the unparalleled experience Pensacola offers to visitors.”

“Securing the 2027 SEC-AAAE Annual Meeting is a monumental achievement for Pensacola, and a testament to the hard work and dedication of all organizations involved,” said Darien Schaefer, President and CEO of Visit Pensacola. “This event provides a unique opportunity to showcase not only our excep-

tional airport facilities but also the rich tourism experience that makes Pensacola a standout destination. We look forward to welcoming aviation leaders to experience our world-class beaches, vibrant culture, and renowned hospitality. This is another step in our mission to position Pensacola as a premier destination for both business and leisure travel.”

A key component of the successful bid was the strong support of Pensacola’s hospitality industry. Innisfree Hotels played a crucial role, offering a highly competitive package for accommodations and meeting space on Pensacola Beach, ensuring attendees will enjoy a premier conference experience in a breathtaking coastal setting.

The SEC-AAAE Annual Meeting serves as a vital gathering for airport executives, industry leaders, and stakeholders, providing a platform to discuss the latest trends, challenges, and innovations in aviation. Hosting this prestigious event solidifies Pensacola’s position as a leader in the airport industry and as a premier destination for business and leisure travel.

More details about the 2027 SEC-AAAE Annual Meeting, including conference programming, speakers, and special events, will be announced as the event approaches.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY CELEBRATES RIBBON CUTTING AT JENNINGSGONZALEZ PARK

Escambia County celebrated the new Jennings-Gonzalez Park with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, April 2, highlighting the newest park addition in the District 5 community.

Escambia County District 5 Commissioner Steven Barry welcomed attendees and kicked off the ribbon cutting ceremony, joined by County Administrator Wes Moreno, Parks and Recreation Director Michael Rhodes, and members of the Jennings family.

"I'm very excited to celebrate the newest park in District 5, which provides children and families in the area even more recreational opportunities without having to leave their neighborhood," Commissioner Barry said. "I'd like to express my sincere thanks to the Jennings family for their support and continued contributions in District 5, along with our Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments for bringing projects like this to fruition for our community. I look forward to seeing our residents and visitors enjoy Jennings-Gonzalez Park for many years to come."

Jennings-Gonzalez Park is located at 1552 Goldenrod Road and features a playground with a slide, numerous climbing structures, and additional play features for all ages. The park opened to the public on Feb. 10 and is open each day from sunrise to sunset.

The park is named for the Jennings family, who have been part of the Gonzalez community for nearly 130 years. The family first arrived in Gonzalez in 1896 after James Sylvester Jennings retired from the Muscogee sawmill, where his son Christopher Jennings continued working after moving to Gonzalez in 1910. NAS PENSACOLA-AREA LEADERSHIP SIGN SAAPM PROCLAMATION

Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacolaarea commanding officers signed a joint proclamation April 4 to reaffirm the base and tenant command’s commitment to preventing sexual assault and providing resources for survivors of sexual assault during Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM).

“We need to ensure our Sailors, Marines and civilian employees are aware of the process and resources available,” said NAS Pensacola Commanding Officer Capt. Chandra Newman. “I’m committed to ensuring that each and every service member and employee here, regardless of rank or position, joins me in eliminating sexual assault from our organization.”

The 2025 SAAPM theme, ‘Step Forward. Prevent. Report. Advocate,’ campaign is a call to action for all individuals to use their personal and collective strength to advance meaningful change in preventing and responding to sexual violence.

Newman, along with other NAS Pensacola-area leadership, signed the proclamation to convey their intent to reinforce the Department of Defense’s (DoD) focus on creating an appropriate culture to eliminate sexual assault and requiring a personal commitment from all service members and civilian employees.

The Step Forward campaign, launched in 2023, was designed to increase awareness of sexual assault and resources to enhance response. The campaign also focuses on changing harmful behaviors, providing support to victims of sexual assault and

encouraging sexual assault prevention initiatives throughout the year.

Newman said that NAS Pensacola’s FFSC’s Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARCs) are engaged in training command representatives as Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Victim Advocates. SARCs serve as the primary point of contact for coordinating victim care services while Victim Advocates are volunteers with specific training in properly assisting victims of sexual assault.

“I want to make sure that survivors know they are not alone and that resources are available,” said Newman . “Our Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Victim Advocates at NAS Pensacola constantly provide training within the command and work with survivors to promote positive change regarding sexual assault.”

Active-duty Victim Advocates, individuals who have undergone the certification process through the National Organization of Victim Advocates (NOVA), are ready to immediately respond and Newman said that victims of sexual assault can report to either a SARC or Victim Advocate whether a restricted or unrestricted report is ultimately filed.

To report a sexual assault, call the tollfree DoD Safe Helpline at (877) 995-5247 or Naval Air Station Pensacola 24/7 SAPR Duty Victim Advocate at 850-449-9231 or Naval Air Station Pensacola Civilian Victim Advocate at 850-293-4562 or the NAS Pensacola Sexual Assault Response Coordinator at 850-554-5606. Individuals in immediate danger should call 911.

family became well-known in the Gonzalez community and regularly attended Gonzalez Baptist Church, which was built on property once owned by their family. The Jennings family kept a vegetable garden and a farm, and they hosted numerous family and friends every Sunday for dinner and fellowship together.

Fred Lee Jennings and Sara Elizabeth Hatton were married in 1938 and went on to have six children, all of whom remained in the Gonzalez community and had families of their own. One of their daughters, Sara Jennings Blackburn, later called "Nana," dreamed of having a park closer to home where her grandchildren could play. Although she passed away in September 2023, her daughter-in-law Candice Blackburn said her Nana would have loved seeing the park come to life for the Gonzalez community. "We are so thankful for this little park to bring joy to our family and many others now," Blackburn said. "Now, Nana has five grandbabies, one bonus grandbaby, and one on the way who will continue playing and spending their time in Gonzalez. We know that Nana would have cherished each and every laugh and squeal she heard from all of these babies she loved immensely. I'd like to thank Commissioner Barry and everyone who worked together to make this park a reality for so many families in our community to enjoy."

Jennings-Gonzalez Park is Escambia County's second park addition in District 5 this year, along with Paper Park in Cantonment.

This hybrid workshop offers an opportunity to ask questions, delve deeper into the projects, and engage directly with TPO staff.

To support participation across the region, a Project Priorities Toolkit is available with ready-to-share materials, including flyers, sample posts, and graphics. Community groups and organizations interested in accessing additional resources can contact marketing@ecrc.org to request access to the Toolkit, which is designed to support outreach during the public comment period.

The Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) collaborates with local jurisdictions and transportation partners to update and prioritize transportation projects that best meet the region's needs. Public input ensures the process reflects the experiences and concerns of the people who use these transportation systems every day.

Whether your focus is on traffic flow, safety, or connectivity, your input helps shape how transportation projects are prioritized across the region.

The final list of 2025 Transportation Project Priorities will be approved by the TPO Board on Wednesday, May 14.
