President’s Message

Austin Tenpenny President

Why Advocacy Matters More Than Ever

Dear Members,

Every day, the homebuilding industry faces new challenges—from rising construction costs and labor shortages to ever-changing regulations that impact how, where, and what we can build. In times like these, it’s easy to focus solely on running our businesses and serving our customers. But if we’re not paying attention to what’s happening in city halls, county commissioner meetings, and state agencies, we’re missing the biggest factor shaping our industry’s future: public policy.

That’s where advocacy comes in.

The Home Builders Association of West Florida doesn’t just host events and networking opportunities—we’re the unified voice for housing. When proposed impact fees threaten affordability, when permitting processes slow to a crawl, or when new ordinances make development more expensive and less predictable, our advocacy is what stands between reasonable regulation and runaway costs.

Recently, we’ve seen local governments across Florida consider new fees, restrictions, and requirements in the name of growth management. While we all agree that growth must be planned responsibly, it must also remain attainable. Homeownership shouldn’t become an unattainable dream for working families because of unnecessary red tape or excessive fees.

Our Association’s strength lies in members who stay engaged—attending county meetings, building relationships with local officials, and helping educate decision-makers about the real impacts of their policies. These efforts make a difference. They ensure that policymakers hear from those who actually build the homes, not just those who oppose them. So, as we move into the final months of the year, I encourage every member to stay involved:

• Attend advocacy events and FHBA legislative updates.

• Volunteer to serve on committees or speak at local meetings.

• Share your experience and insight with elected officials whenever you can.

The future of housing affordability and development depends on it. Together, we can ensure that the next generation can live, work, and raise families right here in Northwest Florida—in communities built by members of the HBA.

Sincerely,
