Welcome to our December edition of Community Connect. It has certainly been another busy and productive year!

In 2023 we have seen plenty of progress for our shire’s road infrastructure. Stage 2 of the River Street Duplication and the Kerr Street Duplication were completed, with both projects including new traffic lights to improve motorist and pedestrian safety.

Multiple stages of the Lennox Village Vision project have been completed, with the intersections at either end of the town centre upgraded to a fresh, modern feel. Various road reconstructions were completed, including the intersection of Crane and Swift Streets, Moon Street, Cawley Close, Northumberland Drive, the intersection of Wardell and Rous Roads, and Henry Philp Avenue.

Council has adopted several important strategies for our shire, including the Ballina Shire Biodiversity Strategy and Lennox Head Strategic Plan, and consulted the community on important projects such as the Wardell Village Centre revitalisation. Of course, this is just a snapshot of what has been achieved. Let’s not forget the vital day-to-day services and facilities that Council provides from water, wastewater, and rubbish collection to parks, libraries, and community swimming pools. A council’s remit is expansive and so much effort goes in to ensuring Ballina Shire is a safe, connected community with a healthy environment.

This year has also been big for community events, with many returning for the first time in several years, like the Love Lennox Festival. New events were also added to our calendar like the Ballina Contemporary Art Market in October, which was a resounding success. It is also incredibly exciting to see the muchloved Lennox Park Carols returning this festive season. Check out the Community Events section on pages 36-38 for all the details.

LENNOX PARK UPGRADE IN FULL SWING Stage 7 of the Lennox Village Vision project, the Lennox Park Upgrade, is progressing well.

Existing pathways have been removed, the old toilet block demolished, and crews have commenced electrical and stormwater works, installation of the new boardwalk and footpath, and refurbishment of the shelter shed.

The Lennox Park toilet block is now closed for a complete rebuild and the new toilets are expected to be finished in early February 2024. Alternative public toilets are available at Ross Park and the Lennox Head Cultural Centre during this time.

Now, the winner faces the exciting task of deciding where to indulge in their golden prize, with a choice of five participating Lennox Head retailers.

The Lennox Park upgrade includes construction of a new bus stop. The existing southbound bus stop has been temporarily relocated to the front of Elders Real Estate opposite the northbound bus stop. This arrangement will be in place until February 2024.

Once complete, this stage of works will enhance Lennox Head’s green space providing better shade and recreation for our community.

Stage two of the Pop Denison Park playground is nearing completion and will be opened in time for the December school holidays!

The new senior children’s playground includes:

A double flying fox Three-tower treehouse structure Pendulum basket swing Tunnel climbing feature Inclusive all-access carousel.

There is also plenty of additional space for kids’ birthday parties or picnics, with the upgrade including five new shelters, a double BBQ, additional seating and drinking fountains.

Council received $1.4 million from the NSW Government’s NSW Regional Housing Fund to help fund this stage of the playground.

“We are absolutely thrilled to open this playground and thank the NSW Government for their support of this project,” said Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader.

“Ballina Shire is experiencing significant population growth and this facility will provide so much fun and physical activity for kids as well as a wonderful space for families to gather.”

To cater for increased use of the area, an extension of the existing car park is identified in the Pop Denison Park Master Plan. Funding has been allocated in Council’s Delivery Program and updates will be provided to the community when these works are due to commence.

Eltham Road has reopened to traffic following a monthlong closure for the Pearces Creek Bridge replacement project.

The new two-lane concrete bridge has been installed and is now open. The road approaches have also been upgraded, including drainage and sealing.

Finishing works, including fencing and driveways, will continue until December 2023. Planting adjacent to the project site will occur in February/ March due to the more favourable weather conditions at this time.

Construction of the replacement Pearces Creek Bridge commenced in June 2023. The aging wooden bridge has been replaced with a two-lane, concrete structure that meets the needs of today’s road users.

Due to the upgrade, the reduced load limit introduced earlier this year by Ballina Shire Council and Lismore City Council is no longer necessary and signposting will be removed.

This project has been funded by the NSW Government, Fixing Country Bridges Program and the Federal Government, Bridge Renewal Program.

A section of Burnet Street, Ballina (between Grant Street and Moon Street) is being upgraded.

This project, which is part of Council’s ongoing Road Reconstruction program, involves a dig out of the existing roadway and reconstruction with a new pavement and bitumen resurfacing.

Council thanks local residents for their patience and understanding while these works are carried out.

prosperous economy RIVER STREET DUPLICATION The next stage of the of the River Street Duplication project, Stage 3, will include duplication of the Fishery Creek Bridge and its approaches.

ROAD PROJECTS

Planning and approvals for this stage are continuing. Works are expected from 2024 - 2025 (subject to funding and approvals).

Once all stages are complete, this project will provide a four-lane road between West Ballina and Ballina Island, doubling the road’s capacity to comfortably cater for traffic into the future.

ALLENS PARADE ROUNDABOUT Ballina Shire Council has allocated funding to upgrade the temporary roundabout at the intersection of Ballina Street and Allens Parade, Lennox Head, to a permanent roundabout.

Upgrade of the roundabout is expected to commence in February 2024 following the January school holiday period.

The works are expected to take approximately four weeks to complete and will require the temporary closure of the northbound lane of Ballina Street (entering the town centre) between The Coast Road and Allens Parade.

During this time motorists will need to detour via The Coast Road and Byron Street to access to the town centre. The southbound lane (exiting the town centre) will remain open.

Further updates will be provided to residents via direct mail and the community closer to the time via Council’s website, local media and social media.

Holiday PARKING The Christmas holidays are almost here and that means parking is in great demand in our town centres.

To ensure parking is available to everyone, timed restrictions are in place in our town centres, Please check timed parking signs to avoid receiving a fine. Council Parking Officers and Rangers conduct regular patrols on foot and by vehicle using automatic number plate recognition, including on weekends.

Fines in excess of $129 may be issued for overstaying the sign posted time limit and $644 penalty plus 1 demerit point for parking in a disabled parking space without a current permit displayed.

Please note fines may be placed under your windscreen or issued by mail by NSW Revenue.

The Burns Point Ferry closes for scheduled maintenance each month.

Regular maintenance is important to ensure a reliable ferry service for visitors and locals.

Scheduled maintenance will occur from 9am – 1pm on:

It will operate normal hours (5.30am – 12.30am) on Sunday 24 December, close for Christmas Day on Monday and then resume normal hours at 5.30am on Boxing Day, Tuesday 26 December 2023.

Customers are requested to travel via the M1 Pacific Motorway and River Drive, Wardell, when the ferry is closed.

The Burns Point Ferry operates continuously from 5.30am to 12.30am daily.

Population and Development Activity ANNUAL REPORT FY2022/23 Ballina Shire Council has released its annual report on ‘Population and Development Activity’ for the financial year 2022/23. This report provides a summary of key statistics relating to development activity in Ballina Shire including population growth, dwelling approvals, residential subdivision and the value of building work.

KEY STATISTICS In the 2023 June quarter, the unemployment rate in Ballina Shire was 1.7%, lower than the Australian rate of 3.5%.

The three largest industries employing local workers in Ballina Shire in 2022/23 were: Health Care and Social Assistance (17.8%), Construction (13.5%), and Retail Trade (11.5%).

In combination these three industries accounted for 6,954 people in total or 42.8% of the local workers. In comparison, NSW employed 13.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.5% in Construction and 8.3% in Retail Trade.

Activation of Level 1 water restrictions brought forward Rous County Council (Rous) advises Level 1 water restrictions will now be activated when Rocky Creek Dam reaches 70% instead of 60% (as stated in the Regional Water Supply Drought Management Plan).

Rous proposed to bring the activation of water restrictions forward in response to the Bureau of Meteorology declaring an El Nino and the pressure this weather event is expected to place on the region’s water sources.

Level 1 water restrictions will apply to the council areas of Ballina, Byron (excluding Mullumbimby), Lismore (excluding Nimbin), and Richmond Valley.

By activating water restrictions sooner than planned, Rous aims to delay the onset of more severe restrictions.

Rous’s primary water source, Rocky Creek Dam, is currently at 84%* capacity. Drier than average conditions associated with El Nino negatively impacted the Northern Rivers’ water supply in September and October 2023.

However, recent rainfall during November, coupled with the forecast of further storm events, mean that the need for water restrictions before Christmas has been delayed.

While it can be tempting to relax water conservation efforts during periods of rainfall, with El Nino conditions predicted to continue, it is important to continue conserving water to preserve supply for as long as possible. *correct at time of printing For more information visit rous.nsw.gov.au

How to avoid drain pipe issues:

Only plant shrubs or small plants with non-invasive roots.

Install a root barrier available from hardware stores and nurseries. Root barriers are made from heavy cloth or plastic and are placed in the ground to contain a plant’s root system.

Get a sewer service diagram to find out exactly where your wastewater pipes are located (you can apply for a sewer diagram online via Council’s Community Portal at ballina.nsw.gov.au - please note there is a standard fee of $107.50 for this request).

Plant smaller trees at least 3m from sewer pipes and medium to large trees at least 6m from sewer pipes.

Ask your local nursery to recommend plants with non-invasive roots.

Keep your sewage system working well If your property is not connected to Council’s sewerage system, then you have an on-site sewage management system (OSSMS).

Here are four ways to keep it working well:

1

Regularly clean the outlet filter in your septic tank

The outlet filter (if the septic tank has one) is located in the ‘T’ outlet of your septic tank. Its purpose is to reduce the level of solids leaving the septic tank and entering the disposal area. The outlet filter needs to be cleaned every six months to maintain effluent flow and prevent the filter clogging.

Information on cleaning outlet filters is available from your supplier or online.

2 Maintain the disposal area Maintaining grass cover over the surface of the disposal area allows for the uptake of nutrients and water from the soil into the atmosphere via sun and wind. Long grass reduces the effectiveness of this process (called evapotranspiration). Maintaining vegetation above the disposal area will also allow maximum sunlight. Grass clippings should be removed from the disposal area.

Don’t allow heavy objects on the disposal area

Driving, parking machinery and vehicles or allowing livestock on the disposal area will compress the disposal area, crushing pipework and reducing the uptake of water and nutrients into the soil.

Limit use of detergents, bleaches, and disinfectants

OSSMS rely on bacteria breaking down effluent, so a healthy septic tank has lots of healthy bacteria. Using strong cleaning products can reduce or destroy the bacteria in the system. It is recommended that you use products that are low in phosphorus and sodium.

Simple steps to protect against mozzie bites Mozzies are a nuisance but they can also carry and spread viruses, including Ross River fever and Barmah Forest Virus.

The best way to avoid mosquito-borne diseases is to take simple steps to protect yourself and your family:

Apply mosquito repellent regularly to all areas of exposed skin Use repellent that contains DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Reapply repellent regularly, particularly after swimming Always apply sunscreen first and then apply repellent.

Natural or homemade repellents provide limited protection from mosquitoes, and you will need to reapply more frequently.

Mosquito wristbands and patches are not recommended as there is no evidence that these provide good protection against mosquito bites.

Cover up while outside Wear loose, long sleeved, light-coloured clothing and covered footwear and socks.

Avoid spending time outdoors when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk.

Avoid areas where mosquitoes are common like swamps and wetlands.

Teven Reserve

Keep an eye out for water lettuce

Teven Reserve Stage 2 starting soon The exciting Teven Reserve project, which will combine a space for ecological restoration, community recreation and wellbeing, is progressing to Stage 2.

This stage will commence in January 2024 and include the construction of a water access structure for passive watercraft and fishing, a nature play area, picnic shelters, nature trails, public facilities and a carpark.

Extensive ecological rehabilitation works commenced at the site as part of Stage 1 works in 2022. This involved the removal of exotic species such as camphor laurel and other weeds, as well as planting of native vegetation.

The first stage of the project was funded equally between Council’s Healthy Waterways Program and NSW Government’s Coastal and Estuary Grants Program. Stage 2 is funded by Council’s Healthy Waterways Program and the NSW Government’s Open Spaces Program: Places to Swim Grant program.

Council will continue to update the community on the progress of this project.

Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) is an aquatic weed that looks like an open head of lettuce floating on the water.

Previously sold as a plant for aquariums and aquatic gardens, water lettuce has become a particularly invasive weed in our waterways across the North Coast.

Water lettuce grows quickly, blocking waterways and smothering native plants.

It causes poor water quality, more habitat for mosquitoes, blocks irrigation equipment and reduces biodiversity.

Water lettuce produces daughter plants, which form dense mats. Each plant, or even pieces of plants can start to grow a new mat.

When is it safe to swim in Lake Ainsworth?

Between October and April each year, Council’s Environmental Health Officers test Lake Ainsworth every week for blue green algae.

This public health program detects potential algal outbreaks so we can advise the public of potential health risks.

Monitoring Ballina’s beaches Council conducts weekly water sampling at our beaches and waterbodies under the Beachwatch Program between November and February each year.

The Beachwatch Program is in partnership with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment. The program provides weekly information about the quality of water, allowing the public to make informed choices regarding swimming locations.

The beaches and waterbodies sampled on a weekly basis include:

Seven Mile Beach Lighthouse Beach Shelly Beach Shaws Bay Lake Ainsworth The Serpentine Missingham Beach The water samples are tested for indicators including enterococci bacteria, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and water temperature. Site observations such as flowing stormwater drains, discoloured water, odours, rubbish, leaf litter and water clarity are also recorded.

The sites are considered safe for swimming when indicators remain below threshold levels. Advisory warnings are issued when testing indicates a potential health risk. After heavy rainfall, swimming is not recommended for up to 72 hours depending on the site and catchment area.

State of the Beaches report

The annual State of the19Beaches Report was released in October 2023.

The report findings indicate eight of the 14 swimming sites in Ballina Shire were graded as Very Good or Good between November 2022 and February 2023.

These beaches had excellent water quality and were suitable for swimming almost all of the time:

Asbestos awareness Think twice about asbestos when planning renovations and repairs or disposing of building materials.

If your house was built or renovated before 1990 there’s a fair chance it contains asbestos.

Here are a few things you can do to keep safe:

We all like to cool down in summer, and with Christmas around the corner, an inflatable pool could be on your kids wishlist, but please consider the safety regulations before purchasing.

In NSW, owners of portable and inflatables pools that are capable of being filled with 30cm or more of water must:

Surround the pool with a safety barrier separating the pool from any buildings and adjoining land. Fences surrounding pools must be a permanent structure and be designed, constructed, installed and maintained to meet Australian Standards AS1926.1-2012 Complete a Pool Self Assessment Checklist and make sure your pool meets the safety standards. Download a checklist for your pool at swimmingpoolregister.com.au/checklists or collect a copy from Council.

As well as needing a safety barrier, all pools with a water volume of more than 2,000 litres require development approval prior to installation e.g. a pool 2.1m x 3.1m x 30cm deep. To obtain development consent you need to lodge a Development Application with Council or a Complying Development Certificate application with Council or a private certifier and have it approved.

Council will require owners to dismantle and immediately remove any portable or inflatable pool (with a depth of more than 30cm) if a compliant safety barrier, or development approval is not in place. Significant ‘on the spot’ fines will be issued to property owners or tenants.

For safety’s sake, do not purchase a portable or inflatable pool unless you are willing to pay the additional costs to install the required safety barrier and obtain development approval (when applicable).

Water Quality at our Pools This summer many residents will be taking a dip in the public pools across our shire – and they can do so knowing that Council is monitoring the water quality and safety of these sites.

During the warmer months of November through to April Council undertakes inspections of public swimming and spa pools. This includes pools located at motels, gyms, caravan parks, and learnto-swim pools, whether a fee is paid or otherwise.

All public swimming and spa pools must comply with the operating requirements outlined in the Public Health Regulation 2012. This means they must be fitted with an automated or continuous disinfectant dosing system and be disinfected with chlorine or bromine.

Council’s Environmental Health Officers conduct onsite water quality testing and send samples to a laboratory for further analysis. The aim is to ensure that these pools are being managed to keep the water and surrounds clean and safe for our community.

Shelters receive thousands of unwanted dogs and cats each year, often as a result of an ill-considered decision.

Before taking on the responsibility of a pet, ask yourself these questions.

The average lifespan of dogs and cats is around 12 years, with some living up to 15-20 years of age, it’s a longterm commitment. Larger dog breeds will have considerable exercise requirements and a sizeable appetite.

Exercise, socialisation, grooming, feeding, reward-based training, play time and providing company and attention all take a considerable amount of time each and every day. Osprey families thrive in new nests Earlier this year two osprey nests at Riverview Park and Kingsford Smith Reserve were upgraded.

Since the lofty renovations two osprey families have taken up residence.

At the Kingsford Smith site osprey couple Peter and Wendy (named by local bird enthusiasts), have had two chicks named Sunny and Grace.

Sadly, earlier in the year Peter was hit by a car on Missingham Bridge while trying to retrieve fish that had dropped onto the road. Thankfully he was rescued and transported to Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital where he was attended to by expert avian vets. He has since been in care with WIRES and lovingly nursed back to health.

Wendy can be seen most days sitting on the poles on Missingham Bridge hunting for fish. Her babies are now both adult size and are following her to the bridge and learning to fish.

The Riverview Park osprey pole also has a couple, Falkor and Queenie, and their two babies Bandit and Rocket.

Residents can play an important role in helping our ospreys to thrive:

Reduce your speed when driving across Missingham Bridge and be alert for ospreys fishing or flying in the vicinity.

Never feed fledging birds they are at their most vulnerable when learning to fish and need to learn those skills from their parents to survive.

Dispose of fishing line and tackle safely this season has seen an increase in fishing line entanglements and fishing line, lures and hooks have even been removed from osprey nests.

Council will be upgrading two more osprey pole nests in December at Chickiba Creek and Kingsford Smith lagoon.

Warmer weather brings active wildlife The warmer weather has arrived meaning more people are out and about using the parks, walking tracks and cycle ways.

Local wildlife are also becoming more active so it’s important to remember some handy tips.

Snakes are not naturally aggressive and always prefer to retreat. They will only attack if hurt or provoked. Most bites occur when people try to capture or kill a snake.

Remember these tips:

Walk away calmly if you come across a snake Wear long pants and boots Scan the ground ahead of you when walking Keep yards clear of long grass and items that provide cover, such as timber stacks, rock or discarded household items Aviaries attract mice which attract snakes so keep bird enclosures clean Avoid areas with dense ground cover Walk your dog on a lead to help keep them safe.

About the artists KATE STROUD A Lismore-based sign writer, graphic artist and muralist, Stroud describes herself as a one-woman creative studio. Stroud has a long history of creating local murals, with work showcased in the Back Alley Gallery, Clunes Store, Club Lane Lismore, and many Northern Rivers businesses. Stroud was engaged to produce the mural on the Bennett’s building. The captivating work depicts a vintage-style stamp collection of Ballina’s historic, environmental, and cultural icons, including landmarks like surfing, local flora and fauna, fishing, and the Big Prawn.

TOM GERRARD A Mullumbimby local, Gerrard is an active international muralist who has been commissioned in London, Berlin, Quito and Rio de Janeiro. Gerrard has exhibited in Los Angeles, Barcelona and Tokyo, and his works have been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria. Gerrard’s design on the Red Earth building is inspired by local coastal flora and features plants, leaves and trees in a pattern that transforms the area, breathing colour and life into this heavily used walkway.

BEKI DAVIES Beki is a Northern Rivers landscape painter, muralist, printmaker and ceramicist whose works focus on the symbiosis that occurs when Human and Landscape meet. Her original works are made using a photographic medium called cyanotype that was exposed and fixed using the sunlight and seawater of the site; to capture the essence of the place in the work. Three of Beki’s works have been reproduced as vinyl decals for the grounds of the Ignite Studios.

Street Art beautifies Ballina CBD In communities around the world, street art has long transformed parts of cities and towns into vivid representations of local identity.

Now, it is Ballina’s turn to benefit from eye-catching and uplifting street art.

Two large-scale murals have been completed as part of a recent street art project – one on Cherry Street and another between Winton Lane and River Street. A series of smaller artworks and paste-ups (prints of original artworks) have also been added to buildings around the Northern Rivers Community Gallery and Ignite studios.

WHY STREET ART? In August 2023 Ballina Shire Council put the call out for Expressions of Interest from artists. Artists were selected and throughout October and November artworks completed.

There is no doubt that street art adds vibrancy to a community. It can lift your mood and make you stop, think, and appreciate the transformation of the space around you.

As well as bringing parts of the CBD to life with more colour and culture, this project aims to address the tagging and graffiti that these areas attract. A lot of time and money goes into removing graffiti and street art has been shown to really reduce the amount of tagging and graffiti that goes on in many places.

It’s also a way to support our talented artists as they’ll get recognition for their work too.

Lismore-based artist Gala Jane’s murals are text based and focus on flood recovery themes. Each mural features a different colour scheme. Blue represents Ballina’s river and the sky, orange represents the famous big prawn and orange and blue together represents where place, culture arts and people meet. With organic shapes, bold colours and three-dimensional text, the three murals at the rear of Ignite Studios read: Northern Rivers, Bundjalung Nation, a place to Create, a place to Share, a place that Matters.

Leisk is a Tintenbar-based visual artist who provided two artworks that are reproduced as vinyl decals around Ignite studios and the NRCG. At the core of Leisk’s algorithmic art is creative coding, which is about writing programs to create art. His work is all hand coded without any involvement of AI. Crafting organic forms through the medium of code involves solving problems like: How can you make something organic in a purely digital form? Can something look both organic and obviously digital at the same time? Can computer code be used to convey an emotion or spark a response?

Wind House BSA 2022 Graduate Award Todd Clare Presented in partnership with Byron School of Art (BSA), Wind House showcases the work of recent BSA graduate, Todd Clare, and is the outcome of his investigations into the unresolved home. Todd begins his paintings flat on the ground, exposed to fragments of sawdust and debris that fall from the renovations of his home. He mixes these materials into paint, building up thick, textural surfaces that echo the feeling of his deconstructed space.

2023 BAM Art Prize Finalist Exhibition Presented by Byron Arts Magazine (BAM) in partnership with the Northern Rivers Community Gallery. The BAM Art Prize promotes awareness of the arts in the Northern Rivers by presenting a national art prize within the region. The exhibition showcases finalist artworks shortlisted for the 2023 prize. This non-acquisitive prize is open to all Australian artists and brings together an outstanding collection of contemporary artworks.

Jenny Gill Schirmer uses the process of making, and the discovery of the relationships between found objects, to reconcile and resolve her life experiences. In Case of Emergency is a reflection on her work as a front-line emergency nurse in Northern NSW where the challenges of caring for the vulnerable during a pandemic and floods fell to the community as the structures that usually protect us failed.

Considering your options and understanding the planning and building processes which relate to your property are the first key steps in rebuilding . Seeking advice from Council or a planning professional will also help get you on the right path.

You can also get copies of your house or building plans and previous approval records by enquiring with your local Council.

This document was a collaborative project involving the Department of Planning and Environment (Planning Delivery Unit), Cred Consulting, Ballina Shire Council, Byron Shire Council, Clarence Valley Council, Kyogle Council, Lismore City Council, Richmond Valley Council and Tweed Shire Council.

The document has been designed to help people who have been flood affected navigate through the planning system and make decisions.

This is a great example of regional collaboration between Council staff and the Department of Planning.

Keep Food Safe this Christmas It’s a great time of year for gathering with loved ones over meals, and with Christmas approaching, it’s crucial to plan food preparation carefully to avoid unpleasant illnesses.

Temperature abuse, such as overloading refrigerators and inadequately cooling cooked foods, is a significant contributor to foodborne illnesses at home events.

This occurs when high-risk foods linger in the temperature danger zone (between 5°C and 60°C), allowing bacteria to multiply.

KEEP YOUR FOOD OUT OF THE TEMPERATURE DANGER ZONE

Follow these tips for a safe and memorable summer event:

Free bushfire resilience rating app to help protect homes In a world-first, Australians now have access to a free app to better prepare their home from bushfire risk and help put downward pressure on insurance premiums.

The app enables Australians to assess their site-specific risk and take action to improve their bushfire resilience. Households can now measure the bushfire resilience of their own home through a star-rating system and receive a customised action plan to make practical, evidence-based bushfire safety improvements to their homes.

The Resilient Building Council received $3 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Disaster Risk Reduction Package, to develop the app.

BOXING DAY RACES 26 December 2023 Ballina Boxing Day Races are an annual tradition where locals, family and friends catch up and have fun after Christmas. Gates open midday and there’s free entry for kids under 18. Enjoy thrilling thoroughbred horse racing, entertainment, food and drinks. It’s a great family day out. Splash into summer around the Ballina Coast and Hinterland

Ballina and Lennox Head offer remarkable snorkeling opportunities to explore our underwater treasures. The seagrasses in Shaws Bay are regarded as some of the best in Northern NSW and provide an ideal environment for safe snorkeling at high tide. The Boat Channel just off Rutherford Street in Lennox Head is also a safe haven for snorkeling on a high tide.

Stand-up paddleboarding in Ballina is more than just a water sport; it’s a gateway to exploring the natural beauty and serene waterways of the bays & lakes. Shaws Bay and Gawandii Beach in the Richmond River both provide calm and relatively flat waters, making them excellent places for SUPing. The fresh water, tea tree stained waters of Lake Ainsworth at Lennox Head is also an ideal location to take out the board or kayak if you prefer.
