There’s plenty of aquatic sports and activities at the pools; making them great locations to host a family BBQ or kid's birthday party.

Elite swimming camp held at our ‘world class’ pools

cover story

Our pools were in the spotlight recently when a high performance swimming training camp came to town. The training camp – held at Alstonville Aquatic Centre and Ballina War Memorial Pool – featured more than 20 of Australia’s best swimmers as they prepare for Tokyo 2021. Olympic swimmers Bronte and Cate Campbell were among the group, along with Commonwealth silver medallist Bradley Woodward. It was the first opportunity the athletes have had to train together since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Coach Simon Cusack said the two-week camp was a chance to get the swimmers competition ready and create some momentum heading into the Olympic year. “We’ve come up here to God’s country to spend a couple of weeks and it’s been fantastic compared to what’s been a pretty ordinary year,” said Mr Cusack. When asked about the local facilities, Mr Cusack was very complimentary of what he called our ‘world class’ pools in Ballina shire. “That’s a big thing when we consider training, these pools are fantastic and Ballina Shire Council’s done a great job,” he said. The camp was also an opportunity for many up-and-coming stars to learn about what it takes to make it as a professional swimmer. Younger swimmers learned about transitioning to professional swimming post-school, nutrition, and even cooking skills. The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the event is currently slated to run in 2021.
