Leaving Europe behind, on page 52 we visit Chongqing, one of the world’s biggest cities and one of China’s most important manufacturing centres. There’s lots on offer from remnants of its ancient past to a brash theme park, but the biggest attraction is its food.

The capital situated on the Danube successfully marries tradition with modernity. Dreamy nostalgics as well as urban trendsetters are bound to get their money’s worth here.

T

he waltz, the Spanish riding school and Sachertorte: All of these are associated with Vienna and its well-known splendour.

But old clichés no longer suffice to describe today’s flair of the capital. For decades, the metropolis missed out on just about every trend, adorning itself with the long-lost fame of its Habsburg past and grandiose fin-de-siècle architecture. But now, the imperial city has woken from its Empress Sissi slumber and is catching up – fast. Next to its old-fashioned coffee houses, there are stylish sushi bars, and alongside the more traditional shops many cool concept stores can be found. The Danube Canal is home to futuristic glass and steel towers and closed-down factory floors have been turned into highly-coveted lofts. And even the local art scene is abuzz. The roughly tenyear old MuseumsQuartier, whose baroque-

style edifices originally served as stables for the Emperor’s horses, with its roughly 70 cultural installations and 90,000 square metres of space has become one of the world’s foremost art spaces. At the Museum of Modern Art (mumok), West Europe’s largest museum dedicated to contemporary art, Franz West’s object art is on display until the end of May. The white cube opposite the Leopold Museum showcases “Clouds” until early July, featuring paintings and photos from artists like Caspar David Friedrich, Gustav Klimt, Renße Magritte, Anselm Kiefer or Gerhard Richter.

Just behind the MuseumsQuartier the Spittelberg offers an array of cosy pubs and cool shops, such as the Lena Hoschek store with its outrageously wistful 50s-style frocks, or the hip bag shop by Ina Kent. Just south of this, beyond the Mariahilferstraße high

street, further Viennese highlights await the shopper on Gumpendorferstraße. The beautiful Art Nouveau interior at Café Sperl is listed for obvious reasons: The huge room with its high stucco ceiling and 100-year old patina has lost nothing of its splendid old-day charm. Pensioners and students, writers and artists and many guests frequent the café every day and are happy to engage in a little chat with the owner, Manfred Staub, who is almost always seated behind the cashier. Just a few blocks further is the historic Saint Charles pharmacy. Alexander Ehrmann turned the pharmacy, founded in 1886, with much love and enthusiasm into a place where natural care and beauty reign. Beautiful, aged wooden racks display natural cosmetics by REN, The Organic Pharmacy and Weleda, as well as the pharmacy’s own line, “Schönheit von Innen” (Beauty from Within). Ayurveda and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) are

also available, as are homeopathic remedies and elixirs made by Saint Charles. But there are other ways to nurture one’s personal well-being. At the casually-elegant restaurant Appiano patrons are seated on creaking timber floor boards set against walls varnished in conifer-green and white tables. The menu offers local specialities with a Mediterranean twist. The choice of dishes is made easier with the help of the friendly hostess, who knows which of the wines from Wachau or Styria to recommend.

The new Café Ansari presents itself with a more zeitgeist-like appeal: The generouslyappointed room serves its guests from a bar adorned with tiles that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Patrons are seated at long wooden tables, partly on cobalt blue sofas, and enjoy tasty soups and sandwiches or a fillet steak with sauté sweet potatoes and sugar

snaps. The fact that Praterstrasse has finally made it into the 21st century is also demonstrated by the Song concept store: Only what is genuinely hip is tolerated here. Consequently, creations by Christopher Kane, A. F. Vandevorst or Céline can be found here, rounded off by bags, footwear, belts or fashion jewellery. The fabulous premises and inhouse fashion gallery alone are worth a visit.

Vienna’s fashion epicentre, however, is currently being built in the 1st district, between Tuchlauben, Bognergasse and Am Hof: The new deluxe shopping mile goes by the name of Golden Quarter – or Goldenes Quartier and Vivienne Westwood opened her store here at the end of September already, followed shortly after by Emporio Armani, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu. By early summer, the Brioni and Etro shops are to open. Prada, Yves Saint Laurent and the Brunello Cucinelli cashmere boutique will be added in 2014,

Slowly but surely Vienna is becoming a viable destination for fashionistas as, next to international brands, many local labels are available and interesting events are held, such as the MQ Vienna Fashion Week in September, or the Modepalast from May 3 – 5, a show that is always staged at the Museum für angewandte Kunst (MAK) which usually showcases designs from the medieval days to present. “I consider it a must to cultivate a vivacious and continuous dialogue between the various creative segments”, says the director of the MAK museum, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, “and it is possible to do so in Vienna”. A young creative scene has helped the city become an insider tip and the fact that this is not yet known to the entire world is greatly welcomed by its residents.

er Donau-Kapitale ist ein perfekter Spagat zwischen Tradition und Moderne gelungen. Verträumte Nostalgiker kommen hier ebenso auf ihre Kosten wie urbane Trendsetter. Walzer, Hofreitschule und Sachertorte? Richtig, das gibt es alles, und zwar in gewohnter Pracht. Doch die alten Klischees reichen nicht mehr, um Wien zu beschreiben. Jahrzehntelang hat die k.u.k.Metropole fast jeden Trend vertrödelt und sich mit dem verblassten Ruhm seiner Habsburg-Vergangenheit und der grandiosen Finde-Siècle-Architektur begnügt.

Nun ist die imperiale Stadt aus dem SissiSchlaf erwacht und holt Versäumtes mit Hochgeschwindigkeit nach. Neben altmodischen Kaffeehäusern sind schicke Sushi-Bars entstanden, neben gediegenen Traditionsläden coole Concept Stores, am Donaukanal wachsen futuristische Glas- und Stahltürme in die Höhe, stillgelegte Fabriketagen werden zu heiß umkämpften Lofts. Auch die Kunstszene brummt. Das gut zehn Jahre alte Museumsquartier, dessen barocke Gebäude ursprünglich den kaiserlichen Pferden als Stallungen dienten, ist mit rund 70

kulturellen Einrichtungen und 90.000 Quadratmetern eines der weltweit führenden Kunstareale. Im basaltgrauen Museum Moderner Kunst (mumok), dem größten Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Westeuropa, ist noch bis Ende Mai die Objektkunst von Franz West zu sehen, im weißen Kubus gegenüber zeigt das Leopold Museum die Welt der Wolken („Clouds“, noch bis Anfang Juli) mit Gemälden und Fotografien von Künstlern wie Caspar David Friedrich, Gustav Klimt, René Magritte, Anselm Kiefer oder Gerhard Richter. Hinter dem Museumsquartier lockt der Spittelberg mit gemütlichen Lokalen und coolen Läden, etwa dem Lena Hoschek Shop mit nostalgisch-flippigen Kleidern im 50erJahre-Look, oder dem hippen Taschenladen Ina Kent. Südlich davon, jenseits der Shopping-Meile Mariahilfer Straße, bietet die Gumpendorfer Straße weitere Wiener Highlights. Das wunderschöne Jugendstil-Interieur des Café Sperl steht nicht umsonst unter Denkmalschutz: Der riesige Raum mit hoher Stuckdecke und 100-jähriger Patina ist unverändert großartig, die Bedienungen sind teilweise schon seit über 20 Jahren hier beschäftigt, neben Billiardtischen und blass-roten Samtsofas gibt es jede Menge Zeitungen und eine

An den eher sparsam verteilten Marmortischen sitzen Rentner und Studenten, Schriftsteller und Künstler, viele Gäste kommen täglich und lassen sich auf ein Schwätzchen mit Inhaber Manfred Staub ein, der fast immer hinter der Kasse sitzt. Nur ein paar Häuser weiter steht die ebenfalls historische Saint Charles Apotheke. Alexander Ehrmann hat aus der 1886 gegründeten Pharmazie mit viel Liebe und Enthusiasmus einen Ort für natürliche Pflege und Schönheit gemacht.

In schönen alten Holzregalen stehen Naturkosmetik-Produkte von REN, The Organic Pharmacy und Weleda sowie die hauseigene Linie „Schönheit von Innen“. Zudem wird mit Ayurveda und traditioneller chinesischer Medizin gearbeitet, homöopathische Tropfen und Wässerchen aus dem Hause Saint Charles begeistern jeden Liebhaber alternativer Heilmethoden.

Es gibt aber auch andere Möglichkeiten, um etwas für das eigene Wohlbefinden zu tun. Im lässig-schicken Restaurant Appiano sitzt man über knarrenden Holzdielen und vor tannengrün lackierten Wänden an weiß gedeckten Tischen und kann zwischen lokalen Spezialitäten mit mediterranen Akzenten wählen. Die Qual der Wahl zwischen Erdäpfel-Grammelknödel oder gebratenem Oktopus auf Schnittlauch-Sauce wird von der netten Wirtin erleichtert, die auch einen der vielen feinen Weine aus der Wachau oder aus der Steiermark dazu empfehlen kann. Eher jung und zeitgeistorientiert präsentiert sich das neue Café Ansari: Im großzügigen Raum steht ein nostalgisch gefliester Ausschank-Tresen und ein Regal mit Zeitschriften. Gäste sitzen an langen Holztischen, teilweise auf kobaltblauen Sofas, und lassen sich die leckeren Suppen und Sandwiches oder ein Filetsteak mit gebratenen Süßkartoffeln und Zuckerschoten schmecken. Dass die einst leicht verwahrloste Praterstraße im 21. Jahrhundert angekommen ist, beweist auch der ConceptStore Song: Nur was wirklich hip ist, wird 11

hier geduldet. Also hängen an Stahlstangen Kreationen von Christopher Kane, A.F. Vandevorst oder Céline, dazu gibt es Taschen, Schuhe, Gürtel oder Modeschmuck.

Die tollen Räumlichkeiten und die hauseigene Modegalerie sind schon allein einen Besuch wert. Wiens Mode-Epizentrum entsteht allerdings gerade im 1. Bezirk zwischen Tuchlauben, Bognergasse und Am Hof: Die neue Luxus-Shoppingmeile heißt „Goldenes Quartier“, bereits Ende September eröffnete hier Vivienne Westwood, kurz darauf folgten Emporio Armani, Louis Vuitton und Miu Miu. Bis zum Frühsommer sollen Geschäfte von Brioni und Etro fertig werden. Auf Prada, Yves Saint Laurent und die Kaschmirboutique Brunello Cucinelli muss man noch bis 2014 warten, bis dann soll auch die unmittelbare Umgebung zur Fußgängerzone geworden sein.

Langsam, aber sicher wird Wien auch für Fashion Victims attraktiv, denn neben den internationalen Marken gibt es lokale Labels und interessante Veranstaltungen wie die MQ Vienna Fashion Week (im September) oder den vor rund zehn Jahren gegründeten Modepalast (3. bis 5. Mai), der wie immer im Museum für angewandte Kunst (MAK) stattfindet. Dort wird ansonsten Design vom Mittelalter bis heute gezeigt, darunter Objekte, die in Wien entstanden sind und weltberühmt wurden, etwa der Nachlass der Wiener Werkstätte, die Bugholzmöbel von Thonet und die Jugendstil-Arbeiten von Gustav Klimt. „Ich halte es für unabdingbar, einen lebhaften und kontinuierlichen Dialog zwischen den verschiedenen kreativen Bereichen aufrecht zu halten“, sagt MAKDirektor Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, „in Wien lässt sich das verwirklichen.“ Eine junge kreative Szene macht die Stadt zum neuen Geheimtipp, und dass noch nicht jeder darüber Bescheid weiß, ist ihren Bewohnern gerade recht.

his year, the jewellery manufactory Wellendorff celebrates its 120-year anniversary. As part of a presentation full of feeling, the extraordinary Anniversary Collection was presented during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, an event held in the lobby of Hotel Adlon.

In today’s technologically fast-paced world, where everyone carries around a mobile phone, people don’t need watches to tell the time anymore. Why do you think people continue investing in watches of the Omega quality and caliber?

That’s an excellent point. In the past people needed watches for practical reasons – time wasn’t visible everywhere like it is today and it wasn’t always correct. Today, people mainly invest in mechanical watches for two reasons: to fulfill an emotional need and for the lasting value of something that will never become obsolete. A mechanical watch is something meaningful, sentimental, and something that has a lasting value.

What exactly is it about mechanical watches that make them so popular?

Well, the history of the watch is very interesting. You see, after the 1970s, with the emergence of quartz technology, many people actually thought that mechanical watches were on their way out. But unlike the way a PC has completely replaced a typewriter, the quartz watches could not replace the need that people have to wear something on their wrists

that is full of tradition and tells a story. A mechanical watch has a heart and soul. It is an absolute work of art. The amount of dedication, craftsmanship, and technical know-how needed to create one is astounding. That’s what gives it a soul.

We concentrate on projects that are very hands on. The work we do with Daniel Craig supporting ORBIS International and its Flying Eye Hospital is something that we take great pride in. The ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital is a DC-10 aircraft that brings ophthalmic training to communities around the world and restores sight to patients who cannot otherwise afford to have restorative sight surgery. I personally love this project because the results are immediately evident – in many cases, with the right operation, blindness can be cured.

he Cirque du Soleil has been entertaining its audience since 1984 with a dramatic mix of acrobatics, dance theatre and stage play. To this very day, the show has remained true to its concept of combining a theme with astounding artistic performances, wondrous costumes, music and lighting to utmost perfection. It is not that easy to pigeon-hole the show: Is it a circus act? Or a play? A musical? Even if it is difficult to put a label on it, the kaleidoscope of acts is staged with a great love of detail and dedication to achieve a total harmony of performance. The costumes could hardly be more sumptuous: nimble characters that epitomise beauty and grace, wearing outrageous head pieces that accentuate artfully painted faces; clowns, masks, feathers and layers over layers of textiles, tulle and trimmings.

The Cirque du Soleil performs all around the world these days with a total of 19 different either touring or resident shows. “Alegría” and “Quidam” are two of these shows which continue to enthuse and enrapture their audiences with an enduring freshness of the amazing performances.

The French word cabriolet translates to ‘caper’ and more likely applies figuratively speaking since the majority of convertibles are, in fact, of a very solid build. Long before motorisation was introduced on a large scale, convertibles or roadsters, with their typical low-lying seats that offered a much closer contact with the ground, were a common sight on roads – and even before that, hundreds of years ago, but back then more likely only fuelled by a maximum one or two horsepower …

There are many facets to luxury. What is your personal definition?

Just what exactly makes a luxurious car these days?

Luxury means different things to different people. Luxury is perceived in a highly subjective manner and need not necessarily coincide with a prized possession. For me personally, luxury is something precious, valuable, more quality-related; something that is out of the ordinary. Something that I like to treat myself to because it increases the quality of my life, that I don’t need per se, but simply enjoy having. Quite often, luxury has very little, if at all, to do with consumerism, but more with time on my hands. It is about treasured moments with friends, family or simply about having time to myself. As the opposite to my job, it fits in perfectly. Luxury is also a huge market that employs many people. More than one trillion dollars are spent annually. And the market is growing rapidly. To this extent, luxury is something positive. And naturally, a beautiful car like the BMW 6 Series Grand Coupé can indeed epitomise luxury. These vehicles create wonderful moments – every day anew.

Every client decides for themselves whether a car is luxurious or not. Naturally, a luxury vehicle must be of perfect quality and feature stateof-the-art technology. However, this alone is not enough. One has to build upon one’s tradition and offer to the client a uniquely special experience of lasting value through craftsmanship and a love of detail. The product is to awaken emotions and create desirability. Also, one has to realise that people’s understanding of luxury varies, depending on the cultural context, and one has to adapt accordingly.

The important thing is: a luxury vehicle does not sell via the price and does not end with the product as such, but more than ever is defined by the service that comes with it. And here, there are many things to be learned from the hotel industry.

Convertibles tend to exude a very special lifestyle. What makes driving with an open top so fascinating?

Convertibles are always very special cars. They appeal to all senses and this feeling of freedom which a trip in an open-top car triggers, is pure joy. The wind that brushes through your hair, to enjoy the sunshine … there is something relaxing about driving home with an open top. Bearing in mind the definition of luxury, that it is something one does not need per se but rather enjoys having, driving a convertible is definitely a form of luxury.

Do you have an unforgettable memory that you associate with driving a convertible?

I myself am an enthusiastic fan of convertibles. My profession allows me to drive highly exclusive convertibles. Currently I am driving a BMW 650i Convertible – even for me, a total dream car. I associate many unforgettable moments with driving a convertible. I love to recall the Mille Miglia, which I covered years ago in a fabulous 1938 BMW 328 roadster. When you drive a roadster like that, you experience every single kilometre with much greater intensity compared to most other vehicles. It makes just about every single open-roof trip a unique experience.

What is behind the fascination of the bmw brand in your opinion?

BMW is synonymous with the ultimate driving machine. Every BMW vehicle gives this feeling to its drivers and for this very reason we have remained true to ourselves for decades now. BMW also managed to remain cuttingedge in technical terms, to constantly reinvent itself and to define the zeitgeist. No matter how enjoyable a drive, we build, in fact, the most efficient vehicles in every category.

Can your day-to-day work define the zeitgeist of a generation in regard to mobility?

It should and it does. Currently more than ever.

Take, for example, the BMW i. In the course of this year we will launch a revolutionary vehicle with the BMW i3 which has been designed from scratch as an electric car. And it is much more than that – the BMW i does not end with

Unter dem Begriff Luxus versteht jeder etwas anderes. Luxus ist höchst subjektiv und muss nicht zwangsläufig mit hohen materiellen Werten einhergehen. Für mich ganz persönlich ist Luxus etwas Kostbares, Wertvolles, Qualitatives; etwas was für mich nicht alltäglich ist.

Etwas, was ich mir gerne gönne, weil es den Lebenswert steigert, was ich nicht zwangsläufig benötige, aber genieße, es für mich zu haben. Meistens hat Luxus dabei nichts mit Konsum zu tun, sondern mit frei verfügbarer Zeit. Es geht um wertvolle Momente mit Freunden, der Familie oder einfach einmal Zeit für sich selbst zu haben. Das ist als Gegenpol zu meinem Job genau das Richtige. Luxus ist aber vor allem auch ein gigantischer Markt, der vielen Menschen eine Beschäftigung gibt. So werden mehr als eine Billion Dollar jährlich in der weltweiten Luxusbranche umgesetzt. Und der Markt wächst rapide. Insofern ist Luxus etwas sehr Positives. Und natürlich kann auch ein schöner BMW wie ein 6er Gran Coupé Luxus sein. Auch diese Fahrzeuge sorgen für wunderschöne Momente – jeden Tag aufs Neue.

WAS MACHT EIN LUXURIÖSES AUTO HEUTE AUS?

Jeder Kunde entscheidet für sich, ob ein Auto luxuriös ist oder nicht. Natürlich muss ein luxuriöses Auto qualitativ perfekt sein und technisch auf dem höchsten Stand. Das allein reicht

Ein Cabrio ist immer ein ganz besonderes Automobil. Es spricht alle Sinne an und dieses Freiheitsgefühl erzeugt bei jeder Fahrt unheimliche Freude. Die Haare im Wind, die Sonne genießen. Es ist Entspannung, mit einem offenen Auto nach Hause fahren zu können.

Gemessen an der Definition, dass Luxus etwas ist, was man nicht unbedingt braucht, aber genießt, es zu haben, ist ein Cabrio auch eine Form von Luxus.

GIBT ES EINE UNVERGESSLICHE ERINNERUNG, DIE SIE MIT EINEM CABRIO VERBINDEN?

Ich bin selbst begeisterte Cabrio-Fahrerin.

The first glimpse of Chongqing is not easily forgotten. Squeezed onto a wedge of mountains hovering ominously above the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze rivers, this heaving municipality of almost 30 million residents spreads like a grey shag pile blanket over the land. At night this image is transformed by light shows: swoops of neon crossing, falling and zigzagging their way up and down breathtakingly high skyscrapers while single beams plunge across the city and gigantic techno-coloured billboards push luxury cars and the latest fashions.

ittle more than a dinky riverside port in Sichuan Province half a century ago, Chongqing has grown to become one of the world’s biggest cities and one of the most important manufacturing centres and megalopolises in China. It served as China’s provisional capital during the Second World War, when the ruling Kuomintang government fled from Nanjing and the Japanese bombers. In 1997 Chongqing broke away from Sichuan to become its own entity and directly controlled municipality. It was the Three Gorges Project—the world’s biggest hydroelectric dam, which finished construction 600 kilometres downstream last year – that put Chongqing on the map and first brought me to this city, ten years ago.

Providing easy access for ocean-liner ships, a powerhouse of investments and exponential job opportunities, Chongqing

under the Three Gorges Dam has been reborn: from a drab, poor interior city to a glitzy and glamorous economic powerhouse, with soaring overpasses, multi-lane highways crisscrossing the two rivers, cranes competing for air space with futuristic skyscrapers and an energised ambition fuelled by migrant labourers.

Chongqing’s modern face is on display for everyone to see, but heavily bombed by Japanese air forces during WW2, there are a few pockets of the old city left. One is Ciqikou, meaning “porcelain port” on the banks of the Jialing River. This rickety neighbourhood of Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644 AD) stone and wood buildings clinging to the sides of narrow cobbled lanes has largely been restored for tourists who flock here to snap up cheap carnival garb and snack on local delicacies like steamed dumplings with salty ham and bamboo shoots and deep fried crab. It’s easy to escape the crowds, climbing up the steep hillsides to where children play hopscotch on the narrow pathways and women hover over endless games of mahjong and cups of jasmine tea drunk from dainty porcelain pots. While there, don’t miss seeing Baolun Si, a rust-red thousand-year-old Taoist temple with intricately carved wooden awnings of dragons and a continuous stream of devotees who light plum-red

incense sticks and pray to the statue deities inside. Chongqing’s most important ancient temple is Baidicheng, a few kilometres downstream from the city on the Yangtze River. Meaning City of the White Emperor, the temple was named after Gongsun Shu, a warlord who controlled much of modern day Sichuan during the Xin Dynasty (9 -23 AD).

The temple is now on an island, created by the rising waters of the Three Gorges Dam, which submerged several of the thousandyear-old lower-lying buildings when the river was flooded. If the sheer enormity and bustle of Chongqing is not entertainment enough, head to Foreign Street, an amusement park themed on foreignness on the outskirts of the city. There is a giant sphinx, a gaudy windmill, a lopsided house and a 1000-toilet bathroom which is billed as the world’s largest.

Chongqing’s most profound attraction is its food. Characterised by a gallant and firecracker hot fruit, the Sichuan pepper, which grows on the misty slopes of the Tibetan Plateau, Chongqing people are renowned for their feverous tolerance for spice, thought to have evolved to counteract the city’s frigid winters. The favourite dish, which is said to have originated from Chongqing, is hotpot, here called huǒguō and literally meaning fire-pot. These days China boasts dozens of hotpot variations, but few can compete with the zest and enthusiasm that Chongqing people have for theirs.

Chongqing hotpot comes in three versions: a lip-tingling, eye-watering, inferno-hot red soup called hong tang; a tasty stock broth called yuan wei; or yuan yang, a pot split down the middle boasting both- the best choice for unwitting and hesitant palates. Diners choose plates of leafy vegetables, forest mushrooms or more obscure ingredients like intestine, arteries, tongue and liver from picture menus and armed with jugs of ice cold beer, jubilant, loud conversation and spindly wooden chopsticks, spend hours putting ingredients into the lip-tingling soup. Sharing a boiling cauldron of hotpot is to Chongqing like a beer garden is to Germans: a ubiquitous and unmissable part of the city’s cultural fabric.

Auf einen Gebirgsvor sprung gedrängt, scheint die 30-Millionen-Metropole über der Flussmündung von Jialing und Jangtsekiang zu schweben. Sie wirkt wie eine graue, flauschig-weiche Decke, die sorgfältig über das Land gebreitet wurde. Nachts wandelt sich dieses Bild in ein atemberaubendes Lichtermeer: Neonstrahlen kreuzen sich, klettern in wildem Zickzack an gigantischen Hochhäusern rauf und runter.

Einzelne Lichtstreifen brechen sich über der Stadt und riesige Banner bewerben in schrillen Farben Luxusautos und die neueste Mode. Chongqing, einst kaum mehr als eine schäbige Hafenstadt in der Provinz Szechuan, hat sich innerhalb eines halben Jahrhunderts zu einer der weltgrößten Städte und zu einem der wichtigsten Wirtschaftszentren Chinas entwickelt.

Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Stadt zur provisorischen Hauptstadt Chinas, nachdem die Kuomintang-Regierung vor den japanischen Bombern aus Nanjing geflohen war. 1997 wurde Chongqing selbstständig und zur „Regierungsunmittelbaren Stadt“ ernannt. Was die Metropole bekannt machte, war die Drei-Schluchten-Talsprerre („Three Gorges Project“), die im letzten Jahr fertiggestellt wurde. Der Stausee erstreckt sich von Chongqing aus über 600 km flussabwärts, das Wasserkraftwerk ist das größte der Welt. Die Drei-Schluchten-Talsperre ist die perfekte Verbindung für Frachtschiffe, treibt Investitionen voran, schafft unzählige Arbeitsplätze. Für Chongqing war das Projekt wie eine Auferstehung: Von der armen und düsteren Kleinstadt zum funkelnden, glamourösen Wirtschaftszentrum – mit in den Himmel ragenden Straßenüberführungen und mehrspurigen Highways über den zusammenlaufenden Flüssen.

Mit Kranichen, die mit futuristischen Hochhäusern um den Luftraum über der Stadt wetteifern – und nicht zuletzt mit einem die Stadt durchflutenden Ehrgeiz, befeuert von zahllosen Arbeitsmigranten.

Einer dieser Orte ist Ciqikou, der „PorzellanHafen“, am Ufer des Jialing. Dieser zerbrechliche Ort aus der Ming-Dynastie (1368 – 1644 A. D.) besticht mit seinen Stein- und Holzhäusern, die sich an enge Gassen mit Kopfsteinpflaster drängen. Er wurde für Touristen größtenteils restauriert. Besucher kommen in Scharen, um günstige Faschingskostüme zu erstehen und zwischendurch lokale Spezialitäten wie Klöße mit salzigem Schinken, Bambussprossen und frittierte 55

In Ciqikou gehört auch ein Besuch des Bao Lun Si, ein rostroter, tausend Jahre alter Tao-Tempel, unbedingt dazu. Er verzaubert mit seinen aufwendig geschnitzten, die Vordächer zierenden Drachenfiguren und wird von einem steten Strom von Anhängern besucht, die im Inneren pflaumenrote Räucherstäbchen entzünden und zur Gottesstatue beten.

Wem das gigantische Ausmaß und geschäftige Treiben Chongqings allein nicht unterhaltsam genug ist, der sollte „Foreign Street“ aufsuchen – einen Vergnügungspark im Außenbereich der Stadt, der unter dem Motto „Fremdartiges“ steht. Zu den Attraktionen gehören eine riesige Sphinx, eine farbenprächtige Windmühle, ein schiefstehendes Haus und ein Badezimmer, das mit eintausend Toiletten als das weltgrößte beworben wird.

Heute rühmt sich China dutzender Variationen der feurigen Suppe.
