JULIANNA RUBIO SLAGER

Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer Julianna Rubio Slager is originally from Spring Arbor, Michigan. Rubio Slager began her dance training with Mrs. Lori Ladwig and went on to study under notable teachers from the New York City Ballet, the Vaganova Academy and Puerto Rican National Ballet. Rubio Slager enjoyed dancing under Barbara Smith at Greater Lansing Ballet during her training, and also under Kathy Thibodeaux and Sol Maisonet at Ballet Magnificat. Upon moving to Chicago, Rubio Slager had the opportunity to work as a freelance artist, teacher and choreographer in the Greater Chicago area.

Rubio Slager was instrumental in the co-founding of Ballet 5:8 in 2012. Rubio Slager is known for her unique ability to engage audiences in discussions of life and faith through her choreography. She has created over 40 works in her past ten years at Ballet 5:8.

Ballet 5:8 tours nationally, bringing Rubio Slager‘s critically acclaimed ballets such as Reckless, Butterfly, The Space in Between, Scarlet and Compass to audiences across the nation. Rubio Slager has won several grants from the Illinois Arts Council and was selected for the DCASE Individual Artist Grant in 2015.

Rubio Slager is a groundbreaking figure within the field, as one of the few Mexican American Artistic Directors and Resident Choreographers of professional ballet companies in the world. She hopes that her leadership and creative work at Ballet 5:8 will pave the way for other women and minorities in professional ballet.

Over the past decade Rubio Slager has enjoyed training and mentoring the next generation of aspiring artists in the School of Ballet 5:8‘s Pre-Professional and Conservatory programs, and in the Ballet 5:8 Trainee Program. Her students have been awarded contracts, scholarships and placement with dance companies, colleges and training schools across the country.

Ballet 5:8 was founded by Julianna Rubio Slager and Amy Kozol Sanderson in 2012.

The company engages communities in Chicago, the Midwest and across the nation in conversation of life and faith through innovative storytelling and breathtaking dance.

Ballet 5:8 has a repertoire of 45 original, innovative ballets created by Slager and distinguished guest choreographers. The company shares the beauty, power, and inspiration of professional dance with thousands of audience members each season. Each performance is centered on themes of life and faith, with stories that enrich, restore and connect with modern audiences.

SYNOPSIS

THE DREAMER

ACT I - THE ​​ WILDERNESS OF CANAAN

Our story begins long ago in the Land of Canaan. A young man named Jacob fell in love with a beautiful young woman named Rachel. Sadly, Jacob was tricked into marrying Rachel’s sister Leah. Though Jacob was married to both women, he loved Rachel more. Leah had many children, but Rachel only had one, her son, Joseph. Tension and hatred formed amongst the other children because Jacob loved Joseph the most.

Reuben, Simeon and Judah were the three oldest sons and were in charge of tending the lambs in the field. They weren’t very responsible and often lost lambs to the hungry wolves. Joseph did his best to protect the lambs and honor his father’s instructions. Jacob grew to respect and love Joseph more and more because of his honesty and humility. To reward him, Jacob gave Joseph a coat of many colors. That made Reuben, Simeon and Judah even more jealous. That night, Joseph falls asleep and dreams that he sees wheat and stars bowing down to him. He ponders the meaning of his dream after realizing that the wheat and stars represent his family. Reuben, Simeon and Judah are beyond fed up with their little brother being exalted above them - after all, he’s one of the youngest! They hatched a plan to sell Joseph to an exotic Gypsy Queen. The brothers tricked Joseph into being sold into slavery and gleefully threw his beautiful coat to the wolves. Jacob found Joseph’s coat in shambles and immediately thought his son was dead.

ACT II - POTIPHAR’S ​​ CITADEL

The marble walls and ancient hieroglyphics glistened in the moonlight as the Gypsy Queen brought Joseph to the house of Potiphar. Potiphar was one of Pharaoh’s most trusted advisors and was married to one of the most beautiful women in Egypt. Mrs. Potiphar was a vain woman, full of jealousy and infatuation with her desires. She had a household full of friends and servants.

The Citadel Socialites and the Fashionistas attended to and entertained Mrs. Potiphar as her husband worked long hours in Pharaoh’s courts. Mrs. Potiphar believed that frogs brought good luck to their owners and kept many of them in her palace pools. Joseph served Potiphar faithfully and worked hard to be kind and humble in his new home. Mrs. Potiphar began to take notice of Joseph. On the eve of Potiphar’s birthday, Mrs. Potiphar had her Patisserie Chef make him an incredible cake. As Joseph continues to clean the palace for his master, Mrs. Potiphar tries to convince Joseph to taste the cake she made.

Joseph refuses, knowing to take something of Pharaoh’s would be wrong. Mrs. Potiphar plays a trick on Joseph and smashes cake into his face right when Potiphar returns home.

Joseph is sent away to prison, along with the Patisserie chef. They struggle with frustration and depression in the darkness of their cells. Soon a Vintner is also thrown into jail. Joseph and the Patisserie Chef explain how they came to be in prison, and they learn that the Vintner used to serve Pharaoh. That night the Vintner and Patisserie chef have dreams about their future. They awake and ask Joseph to interpret the dreams. Joseph reveals that the Vintner will restore to her position, but the Patisserie chef will have a path of pain after her return to the palace.

ACT III - PHARAOH’S COURT

Three years after Joseph was thrown in prison, a strange event happened in the palace. Seven nights in a row, Pharaoh has had the same nightmare.

As she winds down with her ritual prayer to the Sun god Rah, she enjoys watching the water lilies bob in the palace river while her cats frolic on the marble floors. But when she falls asleep, she has a strange dream where she sees shapes that morph from beautiful to terrifying. When she awakes, she has no idea what the dream means. She is perplexed by the intensity and frequency of her dream. Two of her servants heard a rumor of a man in the palace prison who can interpret the meaning of any dream. Pharaoh calls for Joseph at once and tells Joseph his dream. He explains that the dream means Egypt will have seven years of a bountiful harvest, followed by seven years of famine. Pharaoh is delighted to hear of the bounty but dreads the years of famine that will quickly follow. Joseph thinks of a plan to store up many tons of grain to secure Egypt’s future. Pharaoh is so impressed by Joseph’s wisdom and honesty that he promotes Joseph to second-in-command.

At the end of the fourteen years of bounty and famine, Joseph’s family had been struggling in Canaan with lost harvests from the drought. They come to Egypt in search of food. Joseph begins to recognize his brothers and sees one young man who looks incredibly similar to himself. He realizes that this must be the second son of Jacob and Rachel. The boy’s name is Benjamin, and Joseph is overjoyed to see him. However, Joseph worries that Reuben, Simeon, and Judah will sell or kill Benjamin because of their jealousy. He does not trust that they have matured and changed during his time in Egypt. He plants a golden cup in Benjamin’s bag to test them. Much to his surprise, Reuben, Simeon and Judah fight hard to keep Benjamin from going to prison.

Judah even offers to send himself to jail in exchange for Benjamin’s freedom.

Overjoyed and overwhelmed at the changes in his brother’s character, Joseph reveals that he is their brother. The family is shocked and thrilled that Joseph is still alive. Pharaoh invites the entire palace to celebrate the reunion. At the end of the celebration, Joseph’s parents arrive in Egypt and the family is reunited once again. Joseph reminds his family that “what you meant for evil, God meant for good.” The family is grateful for the faithfulness of God, and all of Pharaoh’s court turn from worshipping Rah to worshiping the one true God.
