Together We Are Making a Positive Impact

We are delighted to share our 2024 Annual Impact of Giving Report with you, our valued donors. This past year has been transformative for the Ballarat Grammar Foundation, marked by remarkable generosity and significant milestones that have helped shape the future of our School community.

In 2024, we raised $1,260,745 in donations supporting several School priorities. This outstanding achievement reflects the deep commitment of our community, where every contribution –no matter the size – plays a vital role in ensuring our students and staff have the best opportunities to thrive.

One of the year’s highlights is the successful realisation of the Rintel Development. First available to our School community in November 2024, this magnificent facility now provides boundless sporting and learning opportunities for our students and community members alike. The project, a long-term goal of the School, is a shining example of what can be achieved together through our communities generosity.

Equally exciting is the progress and planning for the Grampians property. The anticipation surrounding this

initiative is palpable, as it promises to offer our students immersive, extended residential programs in a stunning outdoor setting. As this project moves forward, it will rely on the continued support of our community—not only through financial gifts and donations of materials but also through hands-on efforts, like participating in working bees.

Furthermore, Ballarat Grammar's essence is beautifully reflected in our scholarship program. Many students receive bursaries and support, allowing them to join our school and enrich our community with their diverse talents and perspectives. Thanks to the generosity of our benefactors, we are proud to introduce two additional Named Scholarships in 2024, further expanding opportunities for deserving students. Together, these initiatives represent a transformative time for our school. We are re-imagining the educational

opportunities available to our students and continuing Ballarat Grammar’s proud legacy of innovation. Our shared vision is clear: to nurture happy, healthy, and well-rounded students who are prepared not only for academic success but for life beyond the classroom.

Our sincere thanks to the members of the Ballarat Grammar Foundation Board, Capital Campaign Committee members and the Development Office for their commitment to growing the culture of philanthropy at Ballarat Grammar. And finally, thank you for your incredible support as we embark on this exciting next chapter. Your commitment helps us change the game and create a lasting impact on the next generation of Grammarians.

Celebrating a Culture of Giving at Ballarat Grammar

Great schools thrive on the generosity and voluntary support of their communities. At Ballarat Grammar, our strength comes from the goodwill of those who give their time and energy. This collective support is the foundation of our School, enabling us to offer the rich array of opportunities that benefit our students and the wider community.

As we reflect on 2024, we express our deep gratitude for the extraordinary generosity that has shaped our successes this year. Recent visitors to the School have witnessed the completion of the highly anticipated Rintel Centre, a transformational facility made possible by the strong support of our community. Special thanks are due to those who chose to support this project by dedicating a seat as part of the development. For those who would still like to participate, opportunities are still available. Please visit changethegame.bgs.vic.edu.au

Over the course of the year, we were privileged to share numerous reunions and events with our Old Grammarians, past staff, and supporters. These occasions not only reconnected us but also inspired all who attended, as we celebrated the enduring bonds and pride in our school community.

This year, our fundraising efforts focused on the Rintel Centre and expanding scholarship opportunities. We were thrilled to see the School community come together with such enthusiasm and generosity, receiving generous

contributions from 1,337 donors in support of these vital initiatives.

This report highlights the critical role of community engagement and legacy giving, such as the addition of three new members to the Manifold Circle in 2024, through planned gifts. These bequests have long empowered generations of Ballarat Grammar families and students—providing scholarships, enhancing teaching and learning facilities, and supporting staff development and various School programs. We are forever grateful to these people for their generosity.

As our world grows increasingly demanding and complex, the spirit of goodwill and the commitment to give back remain the cornerstones of our community. We thank everyone for their ongoing support and dedication to the values that make Ballarat Grammar truly exceptional.

The Rintel is more than just a new building—it’s a gamechanger for our students’ athletic development. This state-of-the-art facility provides the space and resources needed to excel in a wide range of sports, including basketball, netball, volleyball, and more.

With dedicated areas for strength and conditioning training, as well as spaces to explore the science behind peak performance and recovery, the Rintel is shaping the future of sport at Ballarat Grammar.

Since its opening in late 2024, students have progressively gained access to these cutting-edge facilities and are already experiencing the benefits. Director of Sport, Dean Rossato, has observed a noticeable shift in student engagement, stating: “Students are excited and motivated to use the Rintel Centre’s exceptional sporting facilities while showing great respect and gratitude for the space. The centre attracts boys and girls of all ages, interests, and skill levels, fostering a culture of exercise and engagement.

Alongside the state-of-the-art facility, we have invested in top-tier equipment and staff to support our students. With access before, during, and after school, the Rintel is rapidly transforming student fitness habits. Its location also creates a vital link between the main oval and northern courts. Few schools have such a resource, and we are immensely grateful for it.”

Dean Rossato

“The new Rintel provides students with the opportunity to train like elite athletes. The mental benefits of training in such a state-of-the-art, professional facility not only increases our motivation to push ourselves and accomplish challenging goals but also improves our physical capabilities which allows us to reach our highest potential”

- Olivia Beechey Year 11

“The new Rintel weights gym has been a complete success for the rowers, we are gaining new experiences and knowledge about physical education while improving our physical fitness which strongly reflects on our performance on the water”

Outdoor Education

At Mafeking, Grampians

Ballarat Grammar has an aspirational vision of providing students with an immersive outdoor education experience at Mafeking, located at the foot of the majestic Grampians National Park.

This extraordinary setting offers a gateway to adventure and experiential learning, where students of all ages can challenge themselves, discover hidden strengths, and create lasting memories. The program will provide an opportunity to step away from the everyday and fully embrace the wonders of the outdoors.

Over the 2024 Christmas period, the Mafeking property was impacted by the devastating Grampians bushfires, along with many School families’ properties. The fires caused significant damage, including lost infrastructure, fencing, and vegetation.

In response, the Farm Committee is working with neighbours to guide recovery efforts with expert advice. While the impact has been severe, thoughtful planning has minimised longterm disruptions, and our commitment to providing an exceptional outdoor education experience remains strong.

Town planning has been submitted to Ararat Rural City Council, and we look forward to bringing this vision to life with the support of our community.

Once established, this program will provide a supportive and transformative environment where students can push their boundaries and develop resilience. Bringing this vision to life will require the collective talents and support of our community, and we look forward to working together to make it a reality.

Why

we are leaving a gift in our will

Our connection with Ballarat Grammar

Peter joined Ballarat Grammar as Business Manager in July 1995, retiring in August 2018. With the unwavering support of Meredyth, he worked closely with former Headmaster Stephen Higgs and, more recently, Adam Heath to strengthen the School’s financial position and support its remarkable growth. During Peter’s tenure, the School expanded from 564 Senior School students and 173 Junior School students to more than 2,000 students today.

Some of the most significant projects and developments during Peter’s time at Grammar include the purchase and construction of Mt Rowan, the approval and construction of the CEEd, the creation of the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts, and the establishment of the Year 9 Heinz Centre and City Cite. These transformative initiatives were made possible through the generosity of the Ballarat Grammar community.

Peter continues his connection with the School as a Board Member of the Ballarat Grammar Foundation and founding Director of BGS Educational Services.

Why we are leaving a gift in our will

Having been deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of the School for more than 23 years, and through my ongoing Board involvement, we have witnessed firsthand the impact a Ballarat Grammar education has on young people. This experience has inspired us to give back in a meaningful way, ensuring that future students have access to the same opportunities.

We take great pride in seeing how past projects and scholarships provided through the Ballarat Grammar Foundation positively impact students. Watching students seize new opportunities and go on to succeed in life brings us great joy.

Our hopes for the future

We have chosen to leave a gift in our will to help enhance the facilities and experiences offered by the School and to provide scholarships for deserving students. Having grown up and worked in regional communities, we hope our contribution will allow more rural and remote students to benefit from the opportunities that a well-rounded education provides.

Through our own experience, we have seen the power of giving at Ballarat Grammar. We hope others will also consider joining us in supporting the School, ensuring it continues to thrive for generations to come.

Encouraging others to give

Having experienced the generosity of our community and the meaningful impact that giving has had on both our School and students, we encourage others to consider giving. It is a meaningful way to directly contribute to the extended School community, benefitting students today and into the future.

Manifold Circle

Ballarat Grammar has been deeply enriched by the foresight and generosity of past bequestors. If the School has made a meaningful difference to you or your family, we invite you to consider leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire and support students for years to come.

If you have already included Ballarat Grammar in your will, or are thinking about doing so, please let us know. We would love to acknowledge your generosity during your lifetime. Why we give

Our connection with Ballarat Grammar

Ours has very much been a grassroots association with Grammar over 34 years. As parents of three Old Grammarians, David and I have come to value the experiences our children gained at school which have nurtured skills, character and resilience – attributes standing them in good stead to this day.

Through volunteering from assisting with milk and fruit, reading, the canteen, library, fundraising with the Auxiliary, through to editing a Grammar cookbook, we both came to deeply know and support the ethos behind our school. These experiences, with David’s support, were invaluable when I joined the School Board in 2007. I was privileged to serve as Chair for 6 years until 2024, and now on the Foundation Board. However, our most cherished memories of Grammar centre around our three children, each with their own unique study interests and career aspirations. The staff supported and nurtured each of our children’s unique abilities and talents, recognising them for who they were while encouraging them to reach their full potential, both as individuals and members of their communities.

Why we give to Ballarat Grammar

The words written on the door at the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts, from St Luke’s Gospel, summarises why we give, “From those to whom much is given, will much be required.” Our children have been the beneficiaries of the foresight and generosity of our school’s community, and we wish to continue that legacy of generosity so others can continue to benefit from a well-rounded education based on Anglican values that our community needs now.

Our hopes for the future

Through annual giving and in setting up a scholarship named after our parents, whose lives were defined by generous service, we hope to see rural and regional young people thrive in the context of a robust and broad values-based Grammar education, enabling them not only to become the best versions of themselves, but to give of their best to whatever community they belong to.

Encouraging others to give

Most parents at our school work very hard to ensure their children get the very best education to help set them up for the future. By giving to Grammar, we help families in a practical way to give their children a leg up in life. In seeing young people thrive at our school, learning in excellent facilities, making the most of the many opportunities available to them, growing into adulthood with meaning and purpose and becoming people who work towards the common good, we believe that we can make a difference.

Named Scholarships

Scholarships are a very important part of the history and culture of Ballarat Grammar School. At Ballarat Grammar, we understand that the best way to nurture talent is through opportunity.

Through the provision of scholarships, Ballarat Grammar values and encourages diversity. We value and learn from others, from the experiences they bring and the potential they show.

Our scholarship program provides lifechanging opportunities for students across a wide range of academic and co-curricular activities. Our focus is on learning that matters. Learning to be creative, to think critically and to communicate clearly. Learning to build relationships. Learning to be compassionate and have a lived set of values. Learning to be resilient.

Through your support we aim to increase the number of scholarships available to deserving students who may otherwise be unable to enjoy the benefits of a Ballarat Grammar education.

A Special Message to the Generous Supporters of our Scholarship Program from a selection of the Scholarship Recipients in the Graduating Class of 2024.

As a graduate of Ballarat Grammar, I’m extremely grateful for the generosity and care I experienced, during my 4 years as a Woodbridge boarder. When I was introduced to the Grammar community, I was immediately welcomed with open arms.

The Grammar community create environments for students like me, who live in isolated rural communities, to explore their potential in all areas of education. The experiences I enjoyed with the generous support of a Scholarship, are not available where I live. I had the most amazing journey at Ballarat Grammar where I felt nothing was impossible to achieve and this confidence helped my creativity came alive! I believe this would not have been possible without the support of the music staff and my classmates.

Through my Scholarship, I’ve had the privilege of not only sharing my songs and stories with others but also discovering the profound impact that music can have on people. One moment that will stay with me forever was when I performed “I Was Only 19” for a group of Vietnam Veterans. After the performance, one of the men came up to speak with me. He shared very personal memories of his time in the war — stories that, as his mates later told me, he had never spoken about before.

There have been other unforgettable opportunities too — from writing, recording and performing original songs, to opening for Ian Moss just over a year ago. Each experience has helped shape me not only as a musician, but also as a person.

I also created friendships and bonds I will hold for life. “Now, moving forward, I’m able to take on every lesson I’ve learnt, and every memory made - into my future endeavours”.

Thank you, Grammar

Millie

As a recent graduate at Ballarat Grammar, a day hardly goes by where I don’t find myself looking back at what I gained from my experience at Ballarat Grammar. When my journey began in 2019, I had no idea of the breadth of opportunities that would lie ahead of me. These experiences ranged from sports days, where I forged lasting bonds with my peers, to school camps that nurtured perseverance and creativity, to leadership camps that highlighted diverse leadership styles and inspired me to become one of Grammar’s School Captains.

These opportunities, along with the wide range of sports, music, academics, and other cocurricular activities, defined my experience at Grammar. It is through the generosity of those who support the School via scholarships that these experiences have shaped my character and continue to influence the person I strive to become.

Having graduated last year, I have decided to spend this year working interstate, experiencing so many new and exciting things, an attitude that was instilled in me during my time at Grammar. I am aiming to return to my studies next year, pursuing a career in the fields of aviation and engineering. If it weren’t for my time at Grammar, and the scholarship that supported me to attend, it would have never been feasible for me to pursue these goals. So, for this reason, thank you.

Oscar

To all who have so kindly supported the Ballarat Grammar Scholarship Program, thank you.

BQAGS Career Mentoring Program

Launched in 2023 by the Ballarat and Queen’s Old Grammarians’ Association, the Old Grammarians’ Career Mentoring Program connects experienced alumni with young Old Grammarians to support their professional growth. This initiative helps mentees navigate their career paths with confidence and purpose.

Following a successful first year, the program returned in 2024, offering Old Grammarians the chance to mentor or be mentored. Carefully matched pairs engaged in one-on-one guidance, sharing industry knowledge, networking opportunities, and career insights.

The strong response reflects the generosity of our Old Grammarian community in fostering lifelong learning. While mentor interest has been high, we continue to encourage younger alumni to take advantage of this opportunity.

In 2024, two successful mentor-mentee pairings in architecture and health provided invaluable guidance, with relationships continuing beyond the program:

“My motivation to get involved comes from an appreciation for Ballarat Queens and Anglican Grammar School (BQAGS), which provided me with the opportunity to develop my music skills on a full scholarship while also strengthening my academic abilities. The discipline and skill-building required to master a complex piece of music are the same principles I apply in my professional life today—no one starts with mastery; it takes time, effort, and guidance. This mentoring program supports BQAGS alumni as they develop skills along their career pathways. While it provides an opportunity to give back, my mentee also offered fresh insights into designing with Country—an area many senior peers and I are striving to integrate meaningfully into our practice. That exchange of knowledge was incredibly rewarding.”

“As I grow my own architecture practice, studio Milou & Porter, I recognise the importance of networks that uplift and support professional progression, just as I have benefited from and contributed to them in the past”.

Annelise Tiller (Porter, 1995)

I think the program in general has been incredibly rewarding for me, not only as an old grammarian, but also as an education student. Seeing the students grow in their confidence and as people is really rewarding and inspiring to watch.

It’s been really great to be an old grammarian, but also to be put in a position where I can help students just like I was a student. It’s been great to connect with my teachers as peers rather than those in a position of responsibility.
