‘Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.’ Philippians 1:6

A note from the Principal

One of the highlights of Term 3 was the hosting by the College of three alumni reunions. The most recent of these events took place on the last weekend before the end of the term, where we welcomed back former students who graduated in 2011 and 2012. For these alumni, the transformation that has taken place around the College since their graduation was most pronounced. New buildings, other buildings relocated and re-purposed, new playing areas and the greatly improved amenity and appearance of the College were all remarked upon favourably.

It would be fair to say that the transformation in the lives of all of our returning alumni has also been remarkable. Regardless of whether the years that had passed were few or many, it was encouraging to hear stories about further studies, work careers and in some cases, the beginning of new families. It was also encouraging to realise and acknowledge the part that the College played in the development and shaping of young lives, and how these former students were each setting their own mark upon the world, building upon the work of their parents and the College into their life journey. We pray that our alumni will continue along the path that God has for each one and that in keeping with our College motto, each will realise their full, Godgiven potential.

The recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II has caused many of us to pause and reflect upon her life and upon the era encompassed by her long reign. During the Queen’s remarkable 70 years upon the throne – a period being termed a second Elizabethan era – our world has changed in unimagined ways. Some changes are for the better, some others less so. Listening and reading to many of the comments from world leaders about the Queen, it was frequently remarked that hers was a life of service, devoted to the public good. Former Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating, noted that in an era where most have become preoccupied with self to the neglect of the wider good, 'Queen Elizabeth understood this and instinctively attached herself to the public good’. Her exemplary life challenged us to evaluate our own attitudes and to reflect upon the mark that we are making in the world. Our late Queen acknowledged Jesus as her Lord and testified to God’s faithfulness and steadfast love in her life. Her faith was undoubtedly the bedrock upon which her lifelong commitment of service rested. I pray that as we pass into a new era, we will not quickly forget her legacy and example to us all.

10 | BalCC
CAMP

Our Upper Primary students spent a week in Canberra during Term 3. On the way to Canberra the students stopped off at the ‘Dog on the Tuckerbox’, an Australian historical monument and tourist attraction, located at Gundagai in New South Wales.

While in Canberra the students visited the National Capital Exhibition to learn about the history and naming of Canberra. They also visited Old Parliament House and the National Museum, where the students broke up into groups to investigate the meaning and significance behind a number of key historical artefacts at the National Museum.

Students took a night walk to Mulligan’s Flats and managed to spot the superb little Bettongs. A visit to the National Electoral Office, where they experienced the polling booths, voting, counting of votes and more!! After that it was off to a playground for some relaxing and downtime.

At the NASA Space Centre they heard exciting stories about Australian participation in space exploration. The also visited Parliament House and the War Memorial, where two of our students laid a wreath in memory of a fallen solider.

ELECTION TIME

12 | BalCC

During Term 3 the students in Year 8 Humanities and Social Sciences Geography, History, Economics and Civic and Citizenship (HASS) were studying our democracy, our political system, and how laws are made and passed. The students looked at our voting system and how Australians vote for our Prime Minister. To end the term the students from both classes participated in a mock election, with the two classes forming their own political parties and presenting speeches to the Year 7s, who then got to vote for the party that they thought was the best. The classroom was set up like a polling booth and the Year 7s had to get their name marked of the roll before voting and then place their voting paper into the ballot box. It was a great way to bring all the learning together.

BalCC | 13
14 | BalCC MAXITRANS \ BGT SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Our Year 10 students have taken part in a handson welding program run by Ballarat Group Training (BGT) and road transport manufacturer, MaxiTrans. The two organisations have been working together to get young people thinking about the pathway of a welding apprenticeship and have been visiting Ballarat schools giving students the opportunity to use welding simulators. The program allows students to try their hand at welding in a safe and engaging environment. The simulators allowed the students to feel as though they were really welding, with their work being put on a screen for them and their classmates to see, before their work is given a score and percentage.

BGT are also running a separate school-based program, where students experience work placement for one day a week at employers like MaxiTrans with the aim of getting real-world experience. Both programs educate and show students what welding is about and what career pathways can be offered.

Roman 12:10 NIV RESPECT COLLEGE VALUE

“It was special to come back to Ballarat Christian College with Ella, and look back on our time at the College, to share our knowledge and experience with the students, and to also reflect on when Ella and I first met, during ‘Esther’, the musical.

ALUMNI SPEAKERS: Class of 2015 & 2017

We were recently visited by alumni, Ella Bedggood (Class of 2015) and Hayden Rees (Class of 2017) to give a talk on their studies and work in the performing arts to our Year 7 students. Ella and Hayden took the Year 7s through their paces, teaching them a dance routine and running drama games, before sitting with the students for a question and answer session.

During their visit Ella and Hayden caught up with some of their former teachers and took a tour of the campus to see the many changes that had occurred since their time at BalCC. Ella also caught up with some of her current dance students, who attend BalCC.

Ella has a Certificate II in Dance and completed her Cecchetti Classical Ballet exams up to Category A Intermediate and the Elementary exam in the Australian Teachers of Dancing Jazz Moves Syllabus. Recently, Ella received Honours for her Grade 6 Musical Theatre singing exam and has coached over 30 solo singing students in the last two years.

With over 20 years of dance experience, including 11 years of teaching experience and 8 years dance administration, Ella is passionate about teaching Dance, Voice, Performing Arts, Music & Music Theory in both dance schools and primary/secondary education across Victoria.

Ella’s first major choreographic venture was with her Ballarat Christian College’s production of ‘Esther’

and since then she has worked on various projects including performing in BLOC Music Theatre’s award winning 2021 Victorian production of the year, ‘Mamma Mia’.

Hayden has been performing on the stage since he was eight years old, and he began training in acting and musical theatre at Curtain Call Performing Arts Studios. He has performed in a number of musicals, including ‘Hairspray’, ‘The Wiz’, ‘Grease’, and ‘Mary Poppins’. In 2019 Hayden decided to audition for the Federation University Arts Academy, and after a two week audition process, was grateful to receive the acceptance letter.

During his 3 years at the Arts Academy, Hayden has learnt different techniques in fields including vocal techniques, acting through song, accents, tap, jazz, ballet, mock auditions, and film and television acting. In September he will be taking the stage in Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Into the Woods’. After the last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic Hayden says “It is great that live theatre and the arts industry is back. I have been very grateful to have this experience, and I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the future.”

A big thank you to Ella and Hayden for coming in and talking with and inspiring our students. We welcome alumni speakers at BalCC and if you are interested in coming in to speak or to do a College tour, please email - alumni@balcc.vic.edu.au

Poverty

And our government shouldn’t take the blame, because we should all feel the shame!

Because if we all donated to charity, then poverty just wouldn’t be the same. There wouldn’t be the man down the street begging.

There wouldn’t be children without food, water or bedding. So, with no further claim we should all be ashamed!

Poverty is not only a smelly ripped clothed man, and that’s what you need to clearly understand.

Poverty could be someone like you or methey could be at a library or general primary.

I don’t think about the food at thanksgiving, I don’t think about where I’m living, I don’t think about the expensive medicine, I don’t think about the extensive learning, Poverty is remembering all those things.

We have a chance to fix our society, and encourage sobriety. We can stop poverty, and do it properly, So, let’s change society, And end poverty!

MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING WEEK

Towards the end of Term 3 our students participated in a variety of awareness activities to assist to increase knowledge of Mental Health and Wellbeing for Adolescents. The Secondary students had daily structured activities and primary students had focused devotions each morning.

The Secondary students heard from various speakers during the week. Mrs Ashleigh Dalton spoke on Mindfulness, Pastor Tim Clark on the topic of Seek & Support, and Pastor Toby McIntosh spoke on Self-care.

The Secondary students also heard from guest speaker, Bernard T Mangakahia. With over 20 years of performing, teaching, dancing, speaking and creating personal development programs, Bernard has developed a unique set of skills that has proven to be very valuable and effective.

At a young age Bernard travelled the world to discover his own heritage. He had a passion to understand the strengths, wisdom and knowledge of his ancestors. He believes once knowledge is gained, it must be passed on, in a creative, fun and respectful way.

Bernard took students on a journey through Polynesian cultures including Native American Indian, New Zealand Maori, Hawaiian and Samoan. With each culture bringing the idea of family, challenges and pride and embodied through dance, music, multicultural themes, history, geography, the importance of learning about heritage and the power of self- belief and respect. Students were encouraged to dream big and to ask themselves what is God’s purpose for their lives.

PREPARING FOR YEAR 10

Our Year 9 students were recently visited by Ben Taylor, Executive Officer, from the Highlands Local Learning and Employment Network (HLLEN). Mr Taylor spoke with the students about the VET programs on offer through HLLEN and about what VET really means. VET is a short way to say Vocational Education & Training. Vocation is about work/jobs and Education & Training is about learning. So, VET is about learning how to do a job (whilst at school).

Mr Taylor shared the 2023 VET Program Guide with the Year 9s and with 22 programs on offer through The HLLEN VET Cluster there was no shortage of choice. VET programs give students the opportunity to learn from industry experts, and allows students to study and make friendships with like-minded peers from the cluster of schools with the HLLEN region.

Mr Taylor said “It was terrific to be invited to the meet Year 9 Ballarat Christian College students and spend time with them during their class. What a great group of students who are excited to move into Year 10 next year, which means they can apply to study a HLLEN VET Cluster program.”

& Elev8 Extend

We are pleased to announce the beginning of a new initiative to cater for the needs of Gifted and Talented students at Ballarat Christian College, to be known as the Elev8 and Extend Learning program. Mrs Emily Westblade and Miss Beth Simonis commenced planning for the program at the beginning of the year and spent time in Term 1 and 2 working alongside teaching staff. The program is designed for students who are working 12 months or more ahead of their expected level of achievement in the key learning areas of English and/or Mathematics. The Elev8 and Extend Learning program will assist classroom teachers to provide learning opportunities to extend students, and work directly with identified students in small withdrawal groups on a weekly basis.

Miss Beth Simonis coordinates our Elev8 and Extend Learning Program and will communicate directly with parents and carers whose children have been identified to partake in the program. Participation in the program is based upon school assessment and observation and does not require students or parents to apply to be part of the program.

BUS SERVICE NEW

The BalCC bus service commenced in Term 3 and takes a route from Mitchell Park, down through Alfredton, Lucas, Delacombe, Bonshaw, and Sebastopol to the College each morning and reverse in the afternoon.

We currently have capacity for up to 21 students on the bus (wearing masks under current health directives).

Preference will go to permanent bookings and then casual bookings will be introduced as capacity allows.

The service is NOT a door-to-door arrangement; we will be utilising the Public Transport Victoria bus stops along the route, so students may still need to walk to home (or be picked up) from the closest bus stop.

Students will be signed on and off the bus each trip to ensure appropriate care and travel records. The same driver will be on-board each morning and a separate driver will be engaged for every afternoon (other than

necessary replacements for sick leave, etc). All drivers will carry the necessary WWCC checks and licences in line with requirements for all school bus services.

Pickup and travel times will be dependent on the number of students who elect to use the service – but approximately 8.00am - 8.40am to school, and 3.45pm - 4.30pm from school.

Cost: $250/term per child (or $2.50 per trip), family arrangements can be negotiated with the Business Manager. Parents are invoiced per term.

Based on demand, additional routes could be offered in the future.

For further information contact our College Registrar, Mrs Heather McInerney on hmcinerney@balcc.vic.edu.au or 5337 5900.
