The Art for Oceans Program 2013:

Engaging Art for Healthy Oceans The art, which was originally only of preserva on of the oceans beneficial to human life,is now used to and sustainable management of restore life in oceans the reefs. The focus is to set up a THE Body Shop®,in collabora on with The Marine Founda on and The Reef Check Indonesia, has junk a sculpture of a mermaid in Amed, North of Bali. This ac vity was an effort to u lize art for saving coral reefs as fish nurseries and protec ng beaches from erosion. The mermaid sculpture was sunk on Tuesday (28/5). Present in that event were Suzy Hutomo, CEO The Body Shop® Indonesia, Rika Anggraini, Head of Corporate Communica ons The Body Shop® Indonesia, Celia Gregory, founder of the Marine Founda on, representa ves of Reef Check Indonesia and Wayan Winten. This ac vity was a part of the Art for Oceans Program 2013.In this program, The Body Shop® funded the making of the mermaid sculpture which was conceptualized by Celia Gregory (The Marine Founda on). The sculpture itself was made by a Balinese ar st, Wayan Winten. The mermaid sculpture, funded by The Body Shop® Indonesia is made from Ph neutral cement, provides substrate for coral reef and fish habitat to speed the recovery of the coral reef as well as an interes ng tourist a rac on. The sculpture is a public art, so it unites stakeholders to protect and promote the sustainable tourism in the area. The sculpture was also made with the purpose to develop sustainable tourism in that area. Suzy Hutomo, CEO The Body Shop® Indonesia, said that so far companies had benefited a lot from the society and the nature, including the sea. “Therefore, it is proper for the companies to ac vely par cipate in suppor ng the preserva on of coral reefs in the sea,” said Suzy Hutomo. She said that The Body Shop® fully supports the Art for Oceans Program 2013 is commi ed to become an example for company circles in protec ng coral reefs. “The Body Shop®, The Marine Founda on and The Reef Check Indonesia have strong commitment to save the coral reefs of Indonesia. Hopefully, the collabora on of those three par es can inspire other par es to par cipate in saving coral reefs,” said Celia Gregory. Nowadays, over-fishing, cyanide fishing, massive unfriendly development, and climate change further deteriorate the reefs. Eighty-five percent of coral in the coral triangle area (the sea area covering Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste rich in coral reefs) is being threatened by human ac vi es and a half of this coral is nearly destroyed. And now, the destruc on is further aggravated by the global warming. In turn, this will threaten the livelihood of the people who live in coastal areas by reducing the number of fish (more than 60% of Indonesia’s popula on live in coastal areas). The highly threatened condi on of coral reefs needs a protec on campaign. This me, the coral reef protec on campaign is conducted by means of an art approach. The purpose of installing the underwater mermaid sculpture is to raise awareness of the pressing need to protect the health of our oceans. This ac vity is a part of a series of events to celebrate the World Oceans Day of this year that falls on June 8th, 2013. Celia Gregory said that The Art for Oceans Indonesia is a campaign consis ng of a series of public events, which is star ng in Bali, Indonesia on World Ocean Day on June 8th, where a panel of experts is going to meet and an exhibi on of underwater photography is going to be held in Beachwalk mall in Kuta. The program is ini ated by the Marine Founda on and developed in collabora on with the Reef Check Indonesia. The program invites ar sts and the broader art world in Indonesia guided by Rizki Zaelani, Na onal Museum Curator, to engage their artwork and spread the message of the importance

series of exhibi ons and na onal sculpture art camp in partnership with na onal and interna onal media as well as local NGOs involved in conserva on work and efforts. For The Body Shop®, this campaign is a further effort to conserve oceans, especially coral reefs. On last 25th March, it received a special award from The 3rd Coral Triangle Business Forum in the field of coral reefs for its commitment to marine issues such as conserva on of coral reefs. In that opportunity, as a further
